Dr. Carloye is overall a very good professor. She is knowledgeable about her subject matter and is always very enthusiastic. Her office hours are managable and she is a very friendly person. All in all, I would recommend her, but tests are a **** in her class, as they are usually some bit of a rather large essay.
Tests were hard and some of the work was pointless, and labs were frusterating. Nice friendly teacher!
Dr Carloye is very passionate about science to say the least. However, she is very meticulous and her exams and graded very hard. It is supposed to be "science for non-science majors" but I think that she wants us all to be science majors. As long as you are willing to go in a talk to her, you will be fine, I just never did, and my grade reflects it
You have to attend class and labs. Dr. Carloye makes the subject interesting. Not a bad class as long as you do the reading and don't miss lecture or labs.
Attendance is a must!! She is very dedicated to her lectures and labs and very passionate about science. She can be opinionated and bring in her opinions but they do not hurt the class of lessons given. MUST do all labs, in class and out of class activities and STUDY. Don't forget to read and you'll do aweseomly!
Must go to class oryou fail, tests are fairly tough but if you study should do well. Labs are awfuland pointless. Lots of memorixzation and some work was just busy work. Very good professor, but tough class. All content was interesting.
Dr. Carloye makes it really clear what's important to know both for the test and for life.
Dr.Carloye is a really great professor, she is passionate about what she teaches and she wants her students to be also. The labs were interesting but sometimes really long. I felt that the reading quizzes were really pointless but just make sure you study, go to office hours, go to class and take notes!!
Carloye is a very good professor. She will give you help anytime you need it and lectures are easy to take notes because of powerpoints. Must attend class to get notes. Only bad thing about her is her tests are very hard. The class consistently scored below average on all of her tests.
Great Professor who is actually interested in what she is teaching. Definitely need to go to class though. If you go to class, you get all the info you need to pass the tests. Requires a lot of studying but most of the material is interesting.
For a non-science major, as this as a requirement, it was a very difficult course and there wasn't much guidance.
Either you love her or hate her, there is no in-between. On one hand she makes science fun, keeps it interesting, and holds her own against honors students. But she also is very hard on tests, grades on something only taught one or two classes before, and gives no mercy on make-ups or excuses. If it wasn't a requirement, I wouldn't take it.
she loves science. you have to attend class for clicker questions. she assigns novels with reading guides which is annoying and a waste of time.and grades extremly hard on her test. way too hard for 100 level
Great professor! Very energetic and does a great job making the content interesting. Class is not mandatory but she does have clicker questions every day. She really cares about her students and goes out of her way to help you out if you need clarification on anything. Probably my favorite professor so far at WSU. Sweetest woman ever.
She is very enthusiastic in lectures which keeps you awake. Labs are relevant and helpful for exam. Exams are not easy, but not extremely hard. As long as go to class and do the work (reading guides and clicker questions/quizes) you should be fine. Material is very interesting.
Nice lady but found this class extremely difficult, especially for a non-science major related class. The amount of material covered for one exam is huge- labs aren't as difficult. The topics covered are very random as well.
Dr. Carloye is a very sweet, passionate professor. She wishes for all her students to do well, but its hard to well in this class. Its easy to miss points on tests and labs as what she is looking for is VERY specific. Everything we learn is applicable to life in the Palouse, which is nice. It isn't an awful class, but be ready for a lot of work.
A lot of people find her lectures boring, but I was pretty interested. Labs aren't too bad, and you don't have write-ups (everything for lab is done during lab time). Her exams are pretty difficult, and her study guides don't cover all the material that will be on the exam. She's also really picky about the "explanatory definitions."
At first she seemed like an energetic teacher that would make SCI 101 a good experience. Not the case. The class was very boring and relied heavily on clickers which were useless because most people cheated to get full points. The exams are very difficult and she tends to focus on subjects she talks about least. She doesnt remind about assignments
This professor is super enthusiastic about the subject, which is quite boring in itself and she explains concepts well. However, the material is pretty difficult and she expects students to know it well. I think it is almost impossible to get an A in her classes, and she is not very accommodating or understanding.
Dr. Carloye is a very kind and intelligent woman who is passionate about what she teaches. However, her exams were completely difficult and go completely beyond what is learned in class. Her labs are fairly easy, though. The information learned is somewhat unclear, and it is difficult to know what she expects on exams, especially essay questions.
She's an enthusiastic professor but her class is terrible. Attendance is not mandatory but you have clicker questions every day for points. The labs are easy and there's no lab write ups but the exams are incredibly difficult rarely reflect the information she stresses most. I'd avoid her classes if possible especially if you're a NON science major
Her tests are impossible. On one of our exams the class average was in the 60's (for a 100 level class) and went on to blame the class for not studying correctly, that it could not be her fault. She grades written work VERY difficulty as well. I would recommend NOT taking this class unless you have too
Although she is a very nice lady and is very enthusiastic about science she is not a good teacher. If you have a choice do not take a class from her. Tests are nearly impossible and expects students to know very detailed facts she does not talk about much instead of the big picture. Not clear on class assignments. Way over a 100 level class.
She is a really nice lady, but should NOT be a teacher. She does expects students to know every detail of material and yet gives you no guidelines.
I love this teacher, i just dislike the subject so this class was a little hard for me. This professor will help you with anything as long as you make an effort! she pretty much does your homework for you all you have to do is fill in the blanks. the only reason i wrote attendance mandatory is because there are clicker questions. She's great!
This is Honors Biology for Non-Science Majors. Dr. Carloye is a really wonderful lady and a great teacher, but if you take this class be prepared to talk about evolution exclusively for 10/16 weeks. Her labs are long and tedious but there's no lab write-ups. Three exams, one evolution paper. If you do the reading and study it's an easy A.
Dr. Carloye is a nice enough person but to be blunt- is a terrible instructor. Her tests are extremely difficult and no matter how prepared you feel, you never do well. She is happy with a class average of 70% which is not good considering its a 100 level class. Labs almost always go the full time. I do NOT suggest this class
Heard her tests didn't reflect lectures, but they seem to have? Maybe she improved. But her tests are quite easy if you study. Provides detailed study guides. Her labs are extremely lengthy and detailed... hated it. Class is easy, good professor overall.
she gets defensive when you ask a question. You can't use a computer in class. She uses clickers for questions on the readings and if you aren't there to answer your grade goes down. She is not very nice but she has good content in her lectures. The tests are extremely hard and some of the stuff on them was stuff we didn't learn.
Science is hard in general but carloye explains everything with PPs and clicker Qs. Lots of readings but not very long. STUDY FOR THE TESTS using her study guides she makes. Didn't use one the first test, got a D; used one for the second test and got a B.
So most of the people in my SCI 101 class had either C's or D's. I had a difficult time maintaining a B. Dr. Carloye isn't a person who just gives away high grades like it's nothing. You actually have to work. Hard! I found her tests and labs to be fair and the content was pretty straight forward in lecture. Top Message: You actually have to try!
I found Dr. Carloye to be perfectly reasonable. She is a tough grader, but she is always willing to help out if there are any problems. Labs are quite lengthy but nothing that isn't manageable. The tests are pretty straight forward. Studying pays off! I do feel like I've learned a lot from this class, especially for a level 100.
She was a good teacher. She taught the half a semester and Dr. Hellman taught the first half. The only thing is her test a lot more difficult than his. Make sure you read your book and you will do fine. The lab for this class were a piece of cake though.
The class is hard. She tries to make it simpler and easier by doing worksheets and stuff, but still expects a lot. She's energetic and passionate about the subject, which helps a lot. She's very nice and understanding
As long as you do your part in trying to understand the material, you should do fine.
this half was MUCH better than the first half with Hellmann. Carloye is easy to understand, passionate, and excited about the subject. Her clicker questions are MUCH easier (tests you on basic understanding-you read and do the LBLs and you'll do fine) but the tests are a little tricky. She is DETAIL oriented for sure! Know the nitty gritty!
This class was okay, I wouldn't take it again though.
I noticed that she tries to impose her personal opinions on students in a very backhanded way. She does not answer students questions directly, and often tries to talk around a question or not give a sufficient answer. It is all about quantity and NOT QUALITY. She makes it seem as though questions are an inconvenience for her.
Although Lisa is not the the most helpful teacher, she gets the basic knowledge across. Try your best to keep up and understand. Study from exams by looking over answers to study guides, and actually learn during lab! The work you put into this class equals the grade you get. Don't be afraid to stay after lab and ask your TA questions.
Carloye is enthusiastic about science. Lectures are easy to understand, be prepared to take notes. Labs are annoying, but if you get a TA, or do the stuff on your own, you can make them quick. #1 piece of advice -- Ask around for tests. Her tests are almost identical to the past years. Attendance technically not mandatory, but there are clickers
She might be smiling but that's not because she's nice.
This is your very typical college science class. Carloye is very knowledgeable and passionate about science and is always willing to help. GO TO CLASS and you will pass this course with at least a B. If you skip, it will be difficult. Talk to her, she is very, very helpful if you seek her out. Would definitely recommend her to anyone.
for a 100 level course, I put in more work for this class than I do for any of my 300 level ones. I do NOT have an interest in Biology and like most, I am taking this course for my UCORE credit. Do not take this class unless you genuinely care for the ins & outs of bio + more. LBLs are unnecessary.
Her grading is very clear. Learn the LBL's before class and then complete and study her study guides for exams. Clicker questions every class period. There is always a short quiz in lab. Ask the TA to look over your worksheet every time to insure perfect lab grades. If u learn during class and lab and fill out and study exam study guide, your good
This class was very tough, but her class got me interested in science. If you follow through with her work, always maintain the attitude to learn and understand during labs, and concentrate during lectures, this class will be amazing. My advice for you is to visit her office hours, QnA reviews and etc because that helped me so much for my exams.
You probably don't have an option if you have her or not. For a 100 level class, the effort expected is insane. You not only have a lecture final, but a lab final, and a long paper to complete along with 4 exams. Also the labs are like more than 10 pages long on average... ridiculous. However she is very easy to understand during lectures and smart
Okay this class sucked. You won't like it unless you actually like science. The class is very difficult and heavily relies on doing well on tests. If you don't do well on tests it can really affect your grade the entire semester. Homework and Clicker points are only 2 points, but it will matter in the end!! They add up and it can help your grade.
This class was way too difficult for a UCORE course. Lisa gives online quizzes called LBL' s that need to be completed everyday before lecture. The amount of time that you need to spend outside of this class for a 100 level class is way too much. The content was confusing and too in depth for a science course for non- science majors.
Coming from someone who does not usually enjoy science, I loved Carloye. She makes difficult science concepts easy to understand for people who are not scientific thinkers. However, you do have to show up to her class ready to learn each day because she does require you to answer clicker questions based on the reading.
Dr. Carloye is AMAZING! She really cares that you understand the content. She is very excited about what she is teaching. She is very organized and you can expect in class questions lecture (Kind of her way of attendance) and a chapter reading assignment every week. If you attend class and do all assignments and readings you'll do fine.
Standard Bio class. She switches around the questions on her tests each semester, so if you have an old test to study from, beware of that. She is easy to listen to and a nice lady. I have a hard time getting interested in her lecture, but I think that is more material than her.
Way too much work for a 100 class to be honest. Easy to understand, but she treats the class like an upper lever course, rather have Hellman again.
Dr. Carloye is a nice person who is passionate about what she teaches, however her tests are impossibly hard and she expects way too much out of a 100 level class, it is quite frustrating.
Lisa is an awful instructor. Her 101 class is beyond hard, and is way too in depth for non- science majors. She gives tons of homework, and her exams are beyond difficult. Her lectures are way to in depth and she goes through the material much too fast. Labs are difficult and take almost the entire 2 hours, along with each week you have lab quizzes
This class requires time and effort. Her labs are at least 12-14 pages long lasting almost 2 to 2 1/2 hours. She has worksheets that you do before lecture just to take a quiz with only 5 questions, that you don't even have to turn in. (only worth 2 points) Exams are pretty tough. Doesn't review before exams but has Review Q&A outside of class.
Biology 102 has been the most difficult and pointless classes I have taken at Washington State University. Being a non-major Biology class, I came in expecting to learn biology in a helping environment. Instead, I was met with three quizzes a week, a paper that would challenge a 300 level class, and clicker questions that she gives no answers to.
Everyday you met for class there is a quiz online with a worksheet that is super long. The lab has a quiz every week and there is a lab final. She never tells you the right answer for a clicker question and gets upset when most people get the wrong answer. Exams are super hard. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS.
101 classes should never be this hard, it was awful.
She is a pretty good professor who cares about what she is teaching and actually cares about challenging us. People who complain about her apparently cant handle lifting a finger. Is it really that surprising that science requires actual effort? Plus, shes pretty nice. Btw, her tests arent that hard if you just, ya know, study.
please for the love of god do not get this professor. do not let 101 fool you. The way she does things makes no sense you will only be told thar your answer id wrong and never why. please just save yourself the tears
Never responded to my email regarding my final paper grade. That alone determines how much this person (wouldn't call her a professor) cares about her students. All you need is to read the book and study heavily. Her powerpoints are very basic, you will learn and do better with the book itself. "Dr" is something I wouldn't call her...
Dr. Carloye is very sweet and cares a lot about her students. Aside from that, there is a lot of work in the class itself since you have to keep up with pre-lecture quizzes and actually know the information for clicker questions. It's a highly structured class but if you keep up with the work it'll help you remember everything for the exam.
Lisa is a great professor that will go into detail about the subjects that she is teaching. Before class, she wants to make sure you understand the material before lecture thus she has worksheets that have a quiz to see your understanding. These quizzes are not huge but they can impact your grade. Lisa is very caring and understanding.
attendance isn't mandatory, but there are clicker questions in class, so your grade will drop significantly if you never go to class. personally i think she makes things way too complicated than is necessary.
Her class is test heavy while with lecture. If you skip you miss out on many clicker question points and participation which will hurt your grade. She is not helpful and the homework and reading you do is hardly connected towards the class I rather say lab is the best to learn what is actually going on. I highly recommend not taking this professor
You have homework every night, you also have 5 exams, 5th being the final. She is somewhat nice, but doesn't explain well. The labs were easy and that was mainly the only thing i learned from. She also wont admit when shes wrong, even when u have evidence to prove so. She'll end up finding a way around it.
Dr. Carloye is the best professor I've ever had. She explains tough concepts in ways that makes them seem simple. You have to study in this class but she gives you all the materials needed and a very helpful study guide that is long but if you do it you will pass. She's tough, but if you pay attention the class is a breeze.
I had such a hard time with this class. Theres no way it should be a 100 level. Went into Lisas office on multiple occasions and getting help still didnt help me understand anything in the class. Avoid if at all possible
I don't understand why a lot of people dislike her, she is a great professor. She explains the material very thoroughly and gives all of the information necessary for her exams. If you expect to not have homework or be required to know the material, then you probably won't do well in this class. She is very friendly and passionate about biology.
This is a 101 class and after the first test our class average was in the 60's... that says it all! Don't take her class, it will drop your GPA. I like science and I hate this class.
Dr. Carloye doesn't provide clear study tips for her exams, all she says is flashcards and memorization won't work and provides no alternative ways to study in order to succeed on the exam. Also, don't expect a clear answer when you ask questions if you don't understand her explanation she gets frustrated and treats you like you're dumb.
Lisa is a nice lady, and tries to get the information across well, but sometimes treats the students like children. The clickers are not too bad, but the tests are definitely hard. You must study in order to pass the tests and test averages are high 60's to mid 70's.
Lisa works very very hard for her students and truly cares about them. It is clear that she loves science and teaching and wants students to succeed. But succeeding in her mind isn't necessarily getting an easy A, its making sure you learn something. The class is not easy but if you go into it with the right mindset you will like the class and Lisa
Lisa is awesome. She is very sweet, I just want to hug her. But the rest of her class that isn't in her control? Not awesome. Most of her TAs are very cold and do not provide feedback, and given we're online the labs suck!! Very counter-intuitive. However, every reaction you have with Lisa will be pleasant, and the class isnt hard besides the tests
Lisa is so cool, I love her;she explains well in office hour. i think students dont like her because they never study for exams. I have Harrison for lab, hes so nice gives many feedbacks. be ready to do LBL, weekly lab, research single-spaced 11-font paper, and lecture questions. Overall i love this class. learn so many things. exams are heavy
My absolute favorite professor. Her class is very organized and you will actually learn in this class. Granted, it is a difficult class because there is so much to learn, but she makes it easy. She responds to emails very fast and does Q & A sessions outside of class before exams. You will have to do your work if you want to get an A.
Overall, Dr. Carloye is not a good professor. She is very kind and accessible outside of class. Other than that, she is a tough grader with little flexibility. I found it difficult to learn the material in her class and she was not helpful when questions were asked which made learning overall difficult. Do not recommend this professor.
If you want tedious high school level labs and repetitive lectures with an unkind teacher, she's a winner. Carloye says she is accommodating but responded to questions in lecture with impatience at best. Gave actual misinformation in lecture multiple times. Writes exam questions at such a low level that there are multiple correct answers.
Dr. Carloye is one of the nicest professors and teachers Ive ever had. She gives amazing lectures and her class is really manageable and fair. There have been 2 separate occasions where I messed up and I went to her and she was willing to do extra and go above and beyond for me to fix my mistake. She understands life happens and wants you to pass
Do the readings and you'll do fine. Gives good lectures, I felt prepared for every test.
The workload isn't too bad, readings/worksheets before class then a paper and some smaller assignments, but be prepared to put in the effort if you want an A. You'll have to commit a good amount of time to studying the material outside of class. Carloye knows what she's talking about and is nice but time management during lecture could be better.
Shes really good at teaching the material. Slides and lectures are posted on canvas. Tests arent too bad if you study. She makes a study guide for every test. Answers emails pretty fast. The lab isnt very fun though
Dr. Carloye is the best biology teacher I have ever had. She always tries her best to explain hard concepts in order during the class. If you listen carefully in the lecture and follow her step by step, you will be fine on the exams. Exams aren't hard, most of the questions are pretty straight forward, but you have to study out of the class.
Dr Carloye is a great professor! I had a really fun time in her class. Its not easy and you definitely have to work for your grade but everything is structured really well. She has a lot of information to teach, but presents it in lectures very clearly and spends time on challenging concepts. I really enjoyed this class!
She is a very good professor when lecturing, but can be a tough grader. Pay attention and do your hw because if you fall behind its extremely hard to catch up :/
Awful, awful, awful class. Bio 102 is a biology class for NON BIO majors. And she teaches it as if we are all extremely savvy bio heads. She uses I clicker questions in class and half the class gets them wrong every time. She jumps all over the place and her lectures are a messed it’s like she doesn’t come prepared. Avoid this class
This class covers massive amounts of broad material. Lisa will go over something somewhat complex one time and then ask very specific questions about it on the tests weeks later (th equestions try to trick you too). Good luck getting an A. You have to study you a** off and go to EVERY lecture if you want a chance. class avg for tests was 67% WOW.
Tests are hard and the questions are worded in a confusing way. She often brushes over really complex material too quickly. Make sure you stay on top of the reading assignments, it's hard to catch up and lecture will be impossible without reading ahead of time. She's very friendly and I learned a lot. It's a difficult class, but it's worth it.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU GO HOME ON FRIDAYS AND SRE AN OUT OF STATE STUDENT.
This was my hardest and most frustrating class. The professor will make you use your absent freebies even if you attended. The wifi was bad in the classroom and if you couldn't upload in time you lost the points. She forgot to upload an assignment until 10:30PM and it was due the next morning. Lots of information crammed on exams. Good luck.
Be ready to die via her PowerPoint slideshows. She has a lot of information on them and loves to go through them quickly leaving you to have to spend time outside of class rereading the slides. She does have a personality, but I didn't like her energy at 10 am three days a week. The labs also take less time then one would think.
She does iclickers but if you attend enough, you don't have to go to class. Her tests were easy if you studied at all and you have the opportunity to make up a bad test score on the final. Her lectures are decently interesting and she is very passionate about what she teaches. She does keep you until the last minute but never over that,
I absolutely loved her. It's a tough class don't get me wrong, and you'll have to do a lot of studying to get an A (either a bit of studying every day or ~3 hours per day the week leading up to an exam). She isn't just here to do research, she is actually passionate about teaching and I thought her lectures were very engaging. Very accessible.
I had bio106 for half a semester and she did a pretty good job explaining things to us the first half was with Hellman but I enjoyed Carloye's animal section more. For exams, I studied the LBLs, talked about bodily processes, and review sheets; my lowest score was 92. The LBLs and readings took me an hour each because I took notes and vocab.
SO MUCH INFO given in lectures. About 5 exams including the final. If you follow the lecture diagrams you will be okay.
Lisa teaches the second half of Bio 106 and you'll have 3 exams with her. Exam 3 is easy but study a week before for exam 4, the final is also not too hard. Her study guides are different from Ritchies and don't include a practice test. She also tests on stuff that isn't on her study guide and needed to be learned in lab. Study and you'll be ok.
