nice lady, different, tougher than she had to be, gave long in-class assign. (but i did have for summ. though) test a little unclear, if you have comp. background you should find her much easier than i did.
Carter was a good teacher, tried to make the class fun. She was VERY strict about bathroom breaks- NONE for the entire time of the class (my class was 1 hour, 45 mins). I love computers, so I really enjoyed this class- was challenging for most.
she was helpful, but difficult
I'm taking this class to fulfill a requirement, not to be a computer scientist! She would be a great teacher for students persuing a career in computers, but if in the class just for a fulfillment credit...RUN!!!
Excellent instructor. Very clear at explaining material, uses a variety of teaching methods to demonstrate concepts. Class is always entertaining. Highly recommended.
I am currently taking her class and I think she is a wonderful teacher, all you have to do is the projects and study for the tests, oh and don't play on the computer while she is talking she hates it!
She started out with 23 students ended up with 6. She may know her stuff, but she did not know how to explain it. Even the people who had taken C didn't understand what she was talking about. She doesn't even try to explain even after all of us still didn't grasp an idea--she just skipped on to the next subject. I'll won't take another 1 of her
Has an inflated sense of her own importance. Gives huge hw assignments that take 3 hrs to complete. Tests were ridiculously hard. She does not work well with people and does not explain things satisfactorily.
Extraordinarily gifted teacher, maybe the best I've ever had. Detailed, comprehensive lectures. Makes personal sacrifices to be available and aid student learning. Challenging curriculum, but she imparts knowledge better than any other. Makes personal sacrifice for serious students, well beyond any requirement or expectation. A great experience!
Great teacher. No coddling-you have to take responsibility for reading and studying. No slouching on her part; expects the same from students. Recommended.
she is the best teacher ever! explains everything no way you won't get it. gives you all the help in the world you can call her at home! lets you turn in assignments late, would rather you learn the material then worried about a grade! AWESOME!!!!
Just completed her online internet course. If you are taking other classes, would not recommend her.Assigments are extremely long and online test are timed. Was not immediately available to answer questions.
Knew her stuff but gave a lot of work.
Evidentally your supposed to know the material before taking the class. This is an online class and the teacher provides nothing that does not come from the textbook. Have taken other online classes and they utilize movies, outside sources, etc. to help the student understand the material. This teacher is very slow in grading assignments.
This is one of those classes that you have to really be into to be good at. I stayed very organized and motivated. She keeps you busy. Some people say that she is tough and does not explain things. However, from my experience it more likely that they are lazy, and just want to play on a computer. She is a good lady and really knows her stuff.
Great teacher, is always a vailable to help when needed. Not much homework, daily quizes.
Too harsh on grading. She knows the material, no doubt about that. But she expects too much from a 100-level class. Some homework took 4-5 hours to do and she will take 6-8 points off per small problem with your code. As a previously 4.0 student, it was hard to barely get a B in this class.
I took her C++ class online. There were 3 tests total. The rest of the course was reading and homework, usually modified problems from the book (Be sure to read the modifications before starting on the homework!). I found the class easy, and she was helpful, answering questions within a day or two. Her replies were right on point. Great class!
Great teacher who knows what she's talking about. Needed to ask questions for some of the assignments, and sometimes the test questions were strangely worded, but overall easy enough to get an A in the online class. My only real complaint is that I didn't like the book much but it has its good points too.
Took this class in person and she's a great teacher who will concentrate on your questions until you understand. Assignments are easy enough since you should have familiarity with Java from ITP 100. Read the book, do the assignments, and study for the three tests (lots of logical questions, as well as memorization, in these) to get your A. :)
Her responses to emails weren't always timely or helpful. I took the class online and I'm not sure I learned much. I would recommend taking this class in person.
The class started off great, she is a great person, but when it comes to the tests, her reviews are very vague. Maybe 3 people in my class got above a C. Don't take her if you have a full school schedule.
Do not take this class unless you're into computer programming. I am an "A" student and this class is extremely hard. Her tests do not make any sense. She is an awesome lady, just has a hard time explaining the material for people that don't have programming experience.
You either love programming or you hate it. Carter is very nice. Thoroughly explains the material. Spends the time to make sure everyone understands. Good with office hours. Book is used for homework. In comparison to the other texts books you'll be handling in college, its an easy read, chapters are short, and printed in big font.
She's a nice lady, but the material did not match what's on the test. Her test's is so hard, its crazy. The videos that she's post to study is not clear at all. The space assignments, no HELP at all. terrible!!!!!
I should have trusted what others have said about her. The tests she gives does not match what she teaches, she gives very vague questions and can have multiple answers. She has a false sense of importance about herself. I'm a straight A student but this class will definitely lower my overall GPA.
Her tests are way too hard and are more like exams The book is useless for studying and most of the very important info is hard to find. You need ur class notes and her hand out notes (which dont help much) She gives out an ok amount of assignments but all of the Q's are either unclear, confusing or full of typos & u miss the Q cuz she grads unfair
Programming using Greenfoot. There is a lot of homework associated with this class but as long as you stay on top of it, it's pretty easy. I would say expect to spend about 5 hours a week studyingdoing homework, depending on how well you understand coding. She is always willing to help. Programming can be tough!
Professor Carter is awesome! She is so helpful with all of the information she gives you and she gives you good feedback on what you did wrong. The class can be really hard and confusing at times, but she is always willing to help. I would definitely take her class again!
I thought this class would be fun. I found it to be confusing & the professor to be unsimpathie to her students even when they are doing best, She excepts no late work, does not allow you to do extra credit to to improve your work. I would never recomend professor cater to anyone who is taking this class for credit.
Took this class in the spring 2016, had no issues and when i had problems I asked for help and she helped, even recoded a bit for me when i couldn't get something right. Even submitted the wrong version of a program and still got full credit. Key here is communication. Tests are where I disagree with her and how she accepted some of the answers.
Very knowledgeable about programming. Responds to emails with questions regarding assignments. VERY excited about programming.
She puts you down on the low she doesn't like when you have to use the restroom she calls you out when your late or don't show up even if you have a legit excuse.
Do the homework, print class notes, take notes. Do not miss class! Covers test material. Mostly lecture. Offered a 1 question quiz each class for extra credit. DO NOT BE LATE; starts on time. Having any issues? Communicate with her. Expect to spend about 3 hrs/wk doing homework. Not a difficult class if you show up, participate, & turn in homework.
Prof Carter is typically quick to respond to emails, and happy to work with you. The material is easy enough, but the homework and tests are very hard. Homework usually takes minimum 3 hours to complete. You're given 1 hour to take the tests, and the questions are phrased unlike the book/notes. Her study guides are useless. I just hope I pass.
Some think Prof. Carter is difficult, the truth is that programming is difficult. Prof. Carter makes it seem easy, she goes the extra mile for students who honestly apply themselves and work hard. If you're looking for a free ride you should look elsewhere, you should probably reconsider your other life choices while you are at it.
Professor Carter is by far the toughest professor at TCC. I had a 3.8 GPA prior to taking ITP 100. My GPA fell tremendously because of her teaching methods. I took the course because I thought it would be fun. However, Professor Carter class is a nightmare. The homework assignments are extremely long and her test have nothing to do with her notes.
If you value your GPA, do not take her class. I should have taken the advice of the many other students who said not to take her class. Her homework usually takes a minimum of 4 hours. Her notes are not identical to the test. She does not respond back to emails in a timely matter. I even considered quitting college because of this professor.
I enjoyed the ITP100 online class last semester. All I needed to do is study hard and follow her instructions, and the textbook then you will not get a low grade. She responded quickly by email and I could feel that she really wanted to help me. People might feel the class is difficult because "programming" is difficult.
This class is a 100 level class. It should not be hard. The assignments are easy, but the tests which are 45% of grade are really difficult. The questions are worded poorly. If you are good at inferring answers, you can get them from the notes. I got an A in the class, but it was very hard work. Not something I would expect from a 100 level class.
This class did a very bad job at introducing basic concepts to students, I took this class 3 semesters ago and it was one of the hardest class I took at TCC. I don't think this class helped me learn basic CS concept. Lisa did a poor job at choosing the core fundamental of the course.
SDV101 is an easy class in general. Though I dont think its her fault, there was a lot of homework. it was a pretty fast 8week class. had to do a discussion almost every week & reply to a peer, 1 or 2 assignments a week, also had to set up a meeting with a faculty member which actually gave good advice to my academic plan
I don't understand all of these negative reviews as ALL of the instructions/solutions to complete the code are in the textbook. Anytime I have experienced an issue, Ms Carter responded within the hour (even at midnight). Programming is never easy, but Greenfoot makes it very intuitive. Average weeks worth takes about 2-3 hours to complete.
She tells you ONE TIME: you get an assignment each week, I won't accept them a week late, they are your entire grade. Then she never mentions it again. This'd be fine if it weren't all posted on the world's least user friendly school website. Not only that, but 100% of the class time is fluff and she's not easy to get along w/. Avoid at all costs.
I don't know if she came up with the syllabus herself, but it was definitely challenging! I'm a seasoned student, and I still found things I didn't know. She is very approachable. Through assignments, I let her know my experience and goals, and she helped me develop an academic plan to transfer to ODU. You get out of it what you put into it.
She makes ridiculous homework that the questions can be answered in 2 words yet she expects you to write complete sentences and a full paragraph. Her voice is quiet and she leaves these super awkward pauses in between jokes, or so she thinks are jokes while nobody laughs. Super boring. Exhausting to be in her class. You will die of boredom
I took her ITP100 and ITP120 classes. She is the best professor I have had in my life. She is really caring and passionate about teaching and helping students. Some of assignments are difficult but she offered all examples that can be referred to and helped understand what I learned in class.
Very understanding professor. Looks to make sure your understanding the material, not a "okay you understand the material, not lets test you and see if your a expert on it".
The ABSOLUTE least-understanding professor I have ever had. She expects the students to bend to her will and her entire class revolves around her. She is more concerned with appearing to be teaching than actually answering her students questions. Frustrating when you are actually trying to learn and professor doesn't care at all.
Professor carter is very caring and takes the time to help out when needed! She is easy to work with and will make sure you are well prepared for all your future classes. Would definitely take agai n
Professor Carter is a great teacher! She really cares about her students and wants them to learn. Take her class!
Ms. Carter is an excellent teacher! She wants you to learn, grades fair and has a great teaching style You will learn from her and get a good grade! Classes are interesting
It is refreshing to take a class with a professor who enjoys her profession and actually teaches rather than just shows up, wastes my time, and gives an easy A. I pay good money to get an education and kudos to her for ensuring her students learn. Not a hard teacher if you show up, pay attention and do the work.
Do not take her if possible, very tough and stress. She doesnt care about your efforts at all. Her tests are extremely hard and long. I should've listened to other's reviews before taking her class. She will never grade you 80% and above. It took me 5 days to complete one assignment. Just regret...
She's a great teacher. She really knows her stuff and that is reflected in her lectures. If you ask questions and analyze what the code is doing instead of copying and pasting code, then you'll be fine. A lot of what she has taught in Java has benefited other programming classes. She's challenging, but it really is not that bad.
Most difficult class ever! and it was a 100 level, but no, she wants you to know Everything about computers and then goes into python which should be a beginners level, but is NOT. She is a selfish, ego minded professor and actually threatens students! Worst class ever and she's a programmer - Mean witch really with hatred brewing.
Whats amazing is how I struggled to get a passing grade in this class yet I work in this line of work. She gives you unrealistic tasks that would never be used in the real-world.
Worst teacher ever. Tests are the majority of your grade, but she doesn't know how to write a test well. Questions are confusing and dumb. You get less than a minute to answer ever question, and no way to study ahead of time. Not enough study material to answer the questions. Just avoid this teacher at all costs.
This is hands down the worst class I've ever taken. I don't mean college I mean in my entire time in the US education system this was the worst. Her assignments are vaguely worded and then when she grades them she's super specific. Instead of fixing the assignments she'll make excuses or brush you off. Horrible Do Not Take.
So as others have said this is A LOT for a entry level class. The test are awful! You have less than a minute to answer very precise questions and the test are worth 60% of your grade...so good luck. I am an IT by trade and I find this class overly hard for 100 level. Avoid if you can.
Although this is listed as entry level This IS NOT A 100 LEVEL class! I am in the industry so I know. The Python codes she has you doing are far more advanced and complex than a 100 level student This wouldn't be a problem BUT she grades you like you harshly. She is the hardest grader ever. Forgets we are just learning.
AVOID taking her for your ITP 100 class if possible. She is very hard on the grading. Very nit picky on the way she wants program written for assignments but will not state it exactly in instructions. Assignments are written very vaguely. Very test heavy and time limits are insufficient. Also does not reply to emails in a timely manner.
Honestly just a horrible teacher. Imagine getting a B in an intro class! The only class where you can't see your grade the whole semester until it's final so you have to guess the whole time. Got a 70 on a test well there goes my A because test are worth 60% of the grade! Save yourself the frustration and get a better professor please :)
Final Test which will make or break your score is just unrealistic. Please listen to these other posts and do not take her class. You won't know your grade until the very end of the class unless you have her calculate it for you. You will stress yourself out!
Great instructor! Learned alot and felt prepared for other courses I need to take. Instructor really wants you to learn. Not too much work if follow along
Awesome teacher! Gave great hands on examples in class. Cared about everyone learning and patient. Applied what I learned to get internship which really helped.
Really enjoyed course. Great layout. Simple assignments and tests
AWESOME course. Really good layout. Watch videos and can do assignments. Tests ok
If you follow along and ask questions for something you don't understand you will get a good grade. Ms. Carter will take time for this even on individual basis, she makes time so you could get the information needed to go forward onto the next class.
She good prof took time to help . not hard work
She will always be one of my favorite professors at TCC. Hands down she is one of the most influential instructors I have had the privilege to experience in my educational career. She won't spoon feed you, so you better break out that book and start asking questions. Thank you!!!
Learn alot with information given. Not hard if put in effort to learn. Using knowledge in my job.
do no take her if you want peace or pass a class with more than a C
PLEASE listen to us about her, she is the worst Prof I ever had. The class is not intro at all it's very complex. she gives long complex test and doesn't give enough time to complete tests. Forget having any type of unforeseen circumstances occur she will not care. I have never experienced a prof so uncaring & indifferent.
IGNORE ALL THE GOOD REVIEWS. the way they are typed & the verbiage tells me it's her. I have emailed her plenty of times and I know how she words her responses. she is trying to change her rate on here after seeing all our low reviews. Believe us SHE IS REALLY THAT BAD OF A PROF listen to the bad reviews. she should not be a prof!!
- Tests are 45 mins 50 questions, not enough time for any entry level student. - Rubrics do not have enough info for an entry level class. - I can tell some of these reviews are probably written by her. - Professor has unrealistic goals for entry level students, do not take this class unless you already understand and have used the programs.
Do not take her if you're new to coding. Choose someone else students please. Listen to us who have taken her.
Hands down the WORST professor I've ever! Homework assignments are extremely hard for a 100 level class. Test count the majority of your grade- only 2 test for the semester. 45 minute timed test for 55 and 43 questioned test. Mind you test are fill and blank, multiple choice and essay. Not enough time to complete test.Don't count on acing class.
Prof Carter was awesome and helpful with her content and truly cares about her students! I've never met someone as kind as her and I would take her classes every semester if I could. If you want to learn proper programming content TAKE HER CLASS! 10/10
This is a good class overall, definitely recommend getting a tutor to get ahead of the game. She is a strict grader and there are only a few (Like 1 or 2) opportunities for extra credit that go towards your next test. So be aware to study and make sure you are passing the quizzes and tests.
Not a bad teacher. For being a 100 level course it was a bit overkill. The last 2 tests were totally overkill. 45 minute time limit for essay style, fill in the blank, and multiple choice questions where you wrote code. The tests were right around 50 questions each so you've got less than 60 seconds to read, think, type, and move on. Stay away.
easy class. theres usially 1 or 2 weekly assignments and 1 discussion board thing you have to do throughout the class. its all very straight forward, a lot of copy and paste for assignments.
It's all about the tests of which you have 3 and they are 60% of your grade. The tests are multiple choice, fill in the blank, code writing and essay writing. The tests are anywhere from 44 to 52 questions, and you get 45 minutes to complete the test. This is 60 seconds or less to figure out what the question is all about and answer. Beware!
Hands down the worst professor I've ever had. Takes off points for things she forgot to include in the instructions, short time limit on tests, requires literal PERFECTION on assignments and never gives A's. I have passed several level 200 and 300 computer science courses with high A's, yet have a C in this class despite putting in 10x the effort.
She is the worst teacher I have ever had and I would not recommend her to anyone. She gives less than 1 minute per question on tests and they are impossible. She arbitrarily grades with no guidelines and practically makes up the rubric just so she can take off points. Some of her answers to tests/hw are completely wrong. She shouldn't be a teacher
Lisa Carter has strengthened my humanity towards others as her class makes me understand the experiences some go through that turn them into miserable people. She avoids responsibility, won't correct grading errors, and doesn't teach or link useful resources. Not enough characters to express my utter disdain, TCC needs to fire her.
All I have to say is scroll through the positive reviews. They are all written on similar dates with the same formatting, like punctuation and cadence and all. It's embarrassing that she knows she is this bad of a professor and rather than reflecting and adjusting her methods, she leaves fake reviews of herself. Shameful honestly.
She uses severely outdated materials (one of the pages of notes claims that HDDs are new technology?!). There is nowhere near enough time on tests to be sure you've answered every question well (45-50 questions on a 45 minute test consisting of short answer, multiple choice and essay). Doesn't provide feedback or answers after tests are completed.
For a one credit course the work was fairly easy, however it seems she refuses to give A's.
