We think she is an EXCELLENT professor!
Great prof. Funny, smart and keeps it moving and relevant. Has no problem letting the dummies look stupid. Takes no grief from bozos. Bozos beware!

She is a great lecturer and is so interesting
Keeps it moving, knows her stuff. Deals with the slackers.
She was awesome! Very funny, the complete opposite of the professor stereotype, made things interesting that normally wouldn't have been. I loved it.
I love her! She's great, and very engaging. RECOMMENDED!!!
EXCELLENT Professor!!! Highly recommended.
Keeps 2 hour lectures interesting at all times! Mid-term turned out to be a little harder than I expected, but I think one jsut needs to learn how her exams work and she and the TAs are very helpful. Warning: don't talk, leave your cell phone on, show up late-she will call you on it!
Definitely take her for this class. One of the best. I can't say I was looking forward to a 2 hour lectures, but she definitely makes class interesting. Great sense of humor. Only warning: if your a talker or have a tendency to come late, she's probably not the best prof. for you.
Coutu is so passionate about what she teaches, you can't help getting excited about it with her. Her lecture style is very organized and she makes the material much more interesting that she has to.
She really enjoys what she does and therefore she is very good at what she does.
Coutu's classes are tough, but very rewarding. She expects a lot, but gives twice as much. Her enthousiasm and love of the material make the difficulty well worth it. One of the best teachers at the school.
Took it online with her... Homework, quizzes were easy, final was hard.
This teacher is by far the reason why I got through****ty times at the U. She is dedicated, talented and actually cares about her students. People say negative things about her because she does not pity lazy people who focus more on making excuses.
She's really pleasant one on one, and her class is fun. I think she either has ESP or paranoia though, because in a class of 700, she can recognize a stranger/visitor who isn't normally there.... soooo weird
She is a really great teacher. She cares about her students and will work hard to help you if you show effort.
Dr. Coutu is as annoying as they come. Wait until she loses your grade in the stack of 450! Try to reason with her, you can't! No 100 level class should be that demanding and hard, I would give her an "F" if I could.
definitely don't take this class with her. too demanding for an intro class. i recommend crispin instead. he's funny, has a british accent, and is much clearer. i wish i would've known.

I really like this class! The material isn't easy, but it's not hard either. Basically, if you show up to class, read the book, and participate in the quiz sections, you will understand the class. Dr. Coutu has a great teaching style. She makes all her class lectures interesting and understandable.
Good!
I really enjoy her lectures and the format of grading in her class.
This class is very excellent. Coutu has won many awards for teaching on campus and is deserving of every one of them. She made each subject interesting, and every lecture fun and engaging. She is very helpful in answering questions before/after class and at her office hours. I highly recomend her as a teacher.
coutu has a gread sense of humor and makes lecture fun. her personal stories are not only amusing, but are great examples of the topic we are studying at that particular time. even if you dont like com, id suggest having her just for the fun she provides.
She is the worst teacher ever. She thinks she's funny but she's not.
The class is very structured and assignments are very clear (as are their due dates). The subject itself is interesting and applicable to daily life. She's funny; some people think she's a ****, but that's only because they got caught talking in class, sympathize with those caught, or something or the other. Recommended!
What a great prof!!! I really enjoyed this class! I love how she keeps everyone on topic and gives relevant, real-life examples. The tests are hard but don't let that deture you. Plus she's really funny!

Once you get used to her annoying voice and blunt sense of humor she's a good lecturer. Just dont talk in class and its super interesting and relatable to life
She makes a 2 hour lecture enjoyable.
Class is boring, your better off just listening to the podcasts because there is no difference in whether or not you attend the lecture; she doesn't use anything. She is as anal as is possible for one lecturing hundreds; keep photo id on you at all times, im not joking. Also the discussions are completely worthless and about two weeks behind.
Coutu rocks. She is sarcastic and doesn't take any BS, which is what people have commented on not liking. However, if you mention it to her she'll tone her sarcasm down, and as for the not taking crap, I don't think a prof SHOULD have to take crap from students. Loved the class, learned a lot, and actually had to APPLY knowledge for a good grade.
Coutu was a great teacher. After 202 I definitely plan on being a comm major. Once you get used to her humor, it's pretty funny. Just don't disrespect her and she'll be nice to you.
Dr. Coutu is awesome and I am definitely going to try to take another of her classes again. She makes 2 hour lectures easy to sit through (plus a ten minute break). She genuinely cares about studets doing well, and makes sure averages are relatively similar across quiz sections. Show her respect and she will do the same. Great professor, for sure.
Good personality, very down-to-earth. Quirky sense of humor that grows on you, makes lectures a lot of fun (sometimes). Lecture closely follows the book. Section classes are worthless. Anyway, I really enjoyed the experience overall and I've decided to change my major to Communications.

She was interesting to listen to and has a unique corky personality. However, her grading scale is extremely off. Her personality is a little hard to sit through because she is extremly paranoid about everything and it causes distractions in student learning.
Hard, just learn to apply your knowledge, keep up with reading and lecture. ALWAYS willing to help. Don't disrupt, sometimes her pointing out the fact that students even whisper seem even more distracting than the fact that students were talking. One time she cleared a whole row of students, bc they were so scared, other than that Coutu is awesome.
Interesting lectures, and she has a wicked sense of humor, that me feel awkward when other teachers try to be funny in lecture. Hers came naturally. Also, she knows what she's talking about, and it was easy to take notes, as well as to apply it to my life!

Fairly arrogant, but an easy class.
You know, I did poorly in this class- RARE for me. I think this is because I did not respect the woman at all, finding her incredibly pretentious. Perhaps if I had cared what her opinion was of my work, I would have actually put effort into the damn class. Many students transferred out. I should have taken the hint! Consider this a warning.
She's a very charismatic teacher. Her personality is one that some people have to get use to in order to like her. However, I really enjoyed her class and learned a lot. She says her classes aren't mandatory (except for like 4-5 days) but really you need to go to lecture in order to get a good grade. Texts are highly incorporated into the course.
She is amazing! While the class does challenge you, she is open for questions and will clarify if needed. I loved this class and she is the reason I am a communication major. Be ready to have fun and laugh, but also to work!
Great teacher who wants to see you succeed. She clearly lays down the rules, and if you don't like it..fine listen to the audio cast. I love it, so I don't have to hear people chattering around me. Slackers need not apply. As long as you follow the rules, you will succeed
Class isn't too bad. make sure you go to class though. Only two exams so make sure you study hard for them.
She is an incredible professor. I simply love her!
People who don't love her a crazy. Or they talk, facebook, or sleep in class. She's an amazing speaker, the tests were straight foward, just do the readings. Quiz section a waste of time, but whatever, most are. Gives super obvious hints as to what is important for the test- she wants everyone to suceed and love communication as much as she does.
I would NOT recommend taking com with Coutu. Though the class topics were interesting and I learned a great amount of material, this teacher is frankly a cold hard B**ch. her tests are designed to trick and dont allow students to demonstrate the content they have been taught in lecture. It is WELL worth it to wait a quarter for another prof.
Class isn't too hard but Coutu is definitely pretty anal. It was kind of funny to see other students get called out the first couple of lectures but it started to just become distracting (way more so than whatever the students were doing that she decides to stop the class to address).
She is a pretty strict teacher with how you act in class. She will call you out if you are talking and giggling and she doesnt allow computers in class. She goes over almost all the material in the reading in class. There is no writing assignments. She is very clear about whats on the test and the tests are fairly easy. Overall easy and clear class
Knowledgeable about the topic she teaches. There was a lot of reading involved and papers to do. You need to attend her class to be able to do well in the class because there's a lot of info to cover. She's a fun, eccentric character but willing to help if you're not doing well in the class. But overall, it was fun class full of discussion.
One of my favorite UW professors for sure. The two hour class goes by quickly with her lectures, she keeps them entertaining and explains the material really well. Her tests are super fair if you go to class and do the readings, which aren't very long. I highly recommend taking a class with her. One of my favorite classes because of her.
She is a great professor!!! I love her lecture and character! Definitely do study and go to lecture. She is very nice!
Loved this class! Coutu obviously knows her stuff and is very clear when explaining content. Not a lot of reading - skimmed it and did well in class. Respect her and she'll respect you, simple concept. Highly recommend this course if she ever teaches it again.
Very clear professor with a great personality. She is super fiesty and will keep you captivated in class. I learned a ton in her class and also grew a strong appreciation for the field of communications. All together a wonderful experience.
She was a good teacher, but I felt like everything she said could be said in half the time. She was peppy and interesting, but I often found myself bored because I had read the book prior to class, and she pretty much just rehashed the book. She was a really nice and funny teacher though.
Fun, interesting, very enjoyable to listen to. Lectures are a repeat of what's in the textbook but it definitely helps to attend lecture to actually grasp the content. She WILL call you out if you're talking when she's lecturing. Also, no laptops are allowed.
Easy in the beginning but gets difficult towards the end. Should always attend class because Coutu gives a lot of info. There's a lot of group collaboration in class but the workload is pretty easy. However, readings are mandatory for your survival in this class. That and attendance. Definitely attendance.
She is the most annoying lecturer I have ever had. She doesn't allow computers and gets mad at the littlest things. We did really well as a class on the first 2 mid-terms so she made the final WAY harder than the first two and it killed my grade. Take it from another teacher if at all possible.
I was very impressed with her as a professor. Sure, she's kind of strict and doesn't take anybody's crap, but I liked that about her. She really makes her class interesting and uses examples that everyone can relate to. You can tell she really knows what she's talking about, and she's passionate about it. To me, that's a sign of a good professor.
The readings are extremely important for this class because the tests and lecures are all besed around the text.
she picks on students and get annoyed easily but tiny things like a random question about the class or a student falling asleep
MUST attend class! Read the books, memorize the vocab, find out how she likes her tests answered and you will get a good grade.
She is so wonderful and helpful. I loved her class.
Lisa is fabulous. She won't give you the answers, but she will give you the tools to get there. She is compassionate and willing to listen
Well,She is a good speaker, but for the international students, she is not a good choice. She speaks toooooo fast, even in the video you cannot understand her. No notes or any devices on her class. And she makes us read a lot, her test I think it is hard for me, even I studied, but the score is not good.
She is only of the most inspirational professors ever! The lectures were interesting and fun! There were a lot of long readings, but most of them are also very interesting! Overall, I really enjoyed taking this class with Dr. Coutu! It must be my most favorite class in UW so far.
This class was one of the most amazing classes I think I will ever take. Coutu cared a lot about the material and was funny, making it really easy to stay interested during lecture. The reading material came from the New Yorker, which was cool, however if you didn't read before class you were pretty screwed. Tests were easy paid attention in class
She is enthusiastic about her materials and she definitely knows them really well. Although she speaks fast, it is understandable if you go back to panopto and slower the video. Read all the readings and study your note from class, it's an easy A. Although she has lots to say in lectures, exams are relatively easy! I LOVE her class!
Dr. Coutu is amazing. She was inspiring, funny and very clearly passionate about communication. Lectures were genuinely interesting and while some people might find her strict, I think that other professors should follow her lead in not allowing technology during lecture because I learned much more without it.
Dr. Coutu is a great professor and makes time for students and isn't in the business of tricking you. You will need to attend lecture and the lectures are worth going to honestly. She also uses panopto though. And there's no reason you shouldn't pass this class.
She's so awesome! Her lectures are so relevant and inspirational. There were only 3 exams, 3 hw assignments, and 3 required quiz section attendance. Plus, she has everything recorded on panopto.
I loved Dr. Coutu! You want to pay attention in lecture because all of the material on tests come straight from there. The tests were pretty easy, but you did have to do some studying for them. After the first test though the other two make more sense. The readings are from The New Yorker. Most were interesting, but some of them were quite long.
Great great great professor. Best class Ive ever taken at UW tbh. Class is structured in 3 parts with 3 exams. Exams are not too difficult but definitely requires studying and going to lecture since PowerPoint slides are just pictures. She is very funny and engaging in class, even in a huge lecture of 400. 10/10 would definitely recommend
Three multiple-choice tests Six 500-word essays Clear grading No electronics allowed in lecture
very good intro com class. there are 3 non cumulative multiple choice midterms. You only have to attend 4 of the quiz sections to get full credit. Must turn in 4/6 reflections that can be graded kind of hard. Easy to do well if you study a bit before the test. All lectures are pinoptoed and participation in class is not required.
The best lecture in my life. Dr. Coutu is a true educator. You will learn a lot from her in this class. This course provides an opportunity how to "THINK", and she will teach you how to view the world. I think everyone should take this course as a college student. There are 3 exams, first one is relatively easy, second and third are not super easy.
Lisa is a good lecturer but not good at understanding a student's perspective on many things. She is an easy grader and does not like it when you use your electronics in class. There is panopto!
Dr. Coutu's lectures were always interesting and had a good deal of humor in them. She was very deliberate in the readings she assigned, the subjects she covered, and the examples she used, which made it obvious that her goal in teaching the course was the learning of her students. If you pay attention in lecture the exams are very straightforward.
Professor Coutu is really clear on her policies. She hands out a study guide of what literally what the test will cover--no trick questions either. 4.0'd the class. PS: You don't have to get a New Yorker subscription, just read the articles in an incognito/private window if you're out of "free reads" or clear your cache & cookies.
She says reading is optional but goes over them in lecture anyways so you don't really have to read them, but they really are interesting. Tests are also straight forward and questions relevant to the readings would have been covered in lecture by her. Just show up to lecture, sit there, and you'll get a 3.5+ if not 4.0.
I don't how someone can criticize Dr. Coutu. She is really clear about everything.
If you really want to learn the communication concepts, go for it, If you want an easy 3.8 and use it fullfill the vlpa course, find something else. ( just don't)
Great lectures and straightforward exams! Show up, listen, and lightly read articles and it is easy to do well.
Lisa is a good professor and COM 200 has a lot of interesting concepts to cover. This means going to her lectures or watching on panopto. She does a decent job conveying material but is not clear about what will appear on each test and offers no practice material. She brings a lot of her personal interest into class, which can be good and bad.
She doesn't put lots of information on her PPTs and doesn't allow any kind of electronics in her class (she would literally call you out). You don't have to go to the lectures as you would need to replay them on panopto later anyways. On the bright side, the topics are interesting and tests are straightforward.
I love Lisa!! She's low-key wack about electronics but she's really funny and engaging and the lack of technology really does help you pay attention. She knows her stuff and I love how "fun" her class feels in terms of what we study. I would recommend.
She expects us to memorize exact definitions after repeating the same definition in different ways when she lectures. On top of that, she doesn't allow any technology and will chase you out of the classroom if she sees you using any. Don't take her unless you want to have a terrible quarter.
Coutu is very interesting. She is very strict w/ her policies but I respected them. She is strict about cell phones and will CALL YOU OUT in front of 200 ppl, she doesnt care but I respected it. She is a nice person and simply cares about her students but if you break her rules that what will get you on her bad side. Overall she is a great person.
Ever take her intro com class? Then you already know how well you will do. Honestly thought I would not regret taking another class with her but here we are.. She tries to be good to students but I do not feel an authentic sense of empathy at all. Be prepared to learn theories that most likely will never apply irl.
I want to say that this is my first time to rate professors. At first, i just think Coutu is a very strict professor because we can't use electrical devices at all in class. However, i found that this is really helpful for us to pay attention at class. Coutu's lecture is very specific and she's really nice.
By far the worst class I've taken at UW. Dr. Coutu is friendly and funny, but the material is completely useless in my opinion. None of this information is useful IRL, not to mention it's an extremely difficult class. TONS of reading and memorizing useless concepts. The very beginning of the course seemed promising, but that quickly changed.
Dr. Coutu is one of the nicest professors I have had at UW. Although she has strict in-class policies, she does so for the best interests of her students. She is very clear about what she expects from her students and lays everything out on the table so that students can succeed. You have to put in some work in her classes but is very manageable
Seemed heartless when it came to students' grades. It felt like she was out to get us rather than see us really succeed and learn. The class wasn't a good use of my time and I hated practically every second, so I'm glad it's over. I think she tries to be caring but kind of came across as conceited/unempathetic. At least participation was optional
Condescending and unpleasant. My previous reviews have been removed. Once stopped class for 15 minutes to complain about a tourist who silently popped their head into the lecture hall (instead of just ignoring it like all other professors). Then blamed them for derailing the class...
