Her test are hard. She doenst give good reviews or even a clue as to what is important and what is not. She also gives so much in class work that i felt like i was in high school again
She has been, by far, the worst teacher I have ever had at Western. She was harder to understand then the foreign TA's that teach classes. Whatever you do, DO NOT GET THIS TEACHER!
what an ignorant woman
Un-organized at times, but is helpful if asked outside of the classroom setting.
Okay thinking of signing up with her? SAVE YOURSELF! She is the worst teacher I have ever had in my whole life. She is SO hard to understand and she is mean and yells a lot. She fails about half of her students and no one will ever get an A or B.
The subject isn't too hard, but her lectures are unclear and she does yell a lot. Surprisingly, I pulled a B out of the class, but it was close. She really likes it if you participate during class and go to her office hours. She definately plays favorites
Thought this class would be a breeze. NO WAY!! You will have so much busy work it's insane. She runs class like your in High School again, I don't think she understands the meaning of Lecture, and her tests are awful.
If you are not a serious student then she is not the teacher for you. Helpful outside class as well.
Hard to find, but she has a softer side if you really try and see her for help.
If you are looking for a class that you will learn a lot and be confident that you will do well, DO NOT take this class. She is hands down the worst teacher that I have had at Western. She runs her class as if you are in 8th grade science vs. college!
if you want a teacher who makes you feel like a total idiot for asking a question, take de chano's class. i dont think she understands that we have never learned this material before and that she has a PhD. the questions on her test are so vague and hard!
Sweet, sexy, little thing that sometimes got hung up on the detail, but if you ask for her help or visit during office hours you will survive her course.
The ONLY thing remotly good about this class, is that she drops one quiz grade and 2 homework grades.. but she WILL NOT let you make up homework or quizes or anything, even if it is an extreme circumstance, such as a death in the family!
i got a BA in the class by doing all of the extra credit, never skipping a class, and seeing her at least 2 times a week as well as taking advantate of the open lab hours. she is very helpful if she knows you are a serious student. she even agreed to a set time every week where she would tutor me!
She's one of the worst teachers I have ever had. I happen to love geography and was very excited about the class. It was such a let down. She barely teaches, hardly prepares us for lab or homework, and puts herself way above everyone so unfortunate to be enrolled in this ridiculous waste of a class
This class is very confusing, not because it is hard, but because it is really lame. She really does not know the stuff, it is vague and very unclear, take it at a community college.
She is a very nice lady when you do what she wants. but if you don't join GTU when she ask she won't even give you the time of day.
Very difficult to get along with, but if you do your work and seek out her help, you will pass the class. I would take one of the part-timers if I had a choice for this course next time.
She's extremely rude and talks down to people, unless they are tree huggers and work at recycling plants. She considers teaching reading off a powerpoint slide and then telling you that nothing she teaches actually works at all in real life. I dread going class, and I dread dealing with her.
Had her Fall '04, very easy class. Sat in the front, took the notes, read what was supposed to be read. The only time she yelled in our class was when she sensed a majority of the class had not done the reading, and an incident with the dirt lab where apparently a bunch of people in one lab were swearing about how stupid it was to play with dirt.
Just as long as you answer some questions during any class she will like you. Just make sure you study and do the work or you obviously wont get a good grade...do not be like me and slack off in the second half of the class
It's an easy class but she is a terrible professor. Very hard to get along with as she talks down to students (a lot). She will make students with a 40 or higher on her exams standup in class, as if to make the other students feel like they are dumb. Also she will not let you make up labs and/or exams no matter the circumstance, which is a no-no.
She's a great teacher, you just need to know that you have to keep up with the work, read the material, and stay up on the work load! It's a good class and she teaches it well!
It's not often that I've found professors as enthusiastic about survey-level courses as Dr. DeChano. Informative, clear lectures; thorough and fair syllabus, grading, etc.
Dr. D is a great prof. She is very clear about what she expects from you as a student. If you sit up front, take notes, and study you will pull an A. That's what I did and it worked for me. Although some parts of the course are a bit dull, overall it's not that bad of a class. Our class was allowed to make up exams.
She is very sarcastic with a quick fuse. However, she seems to be pretty fair if you put forth the effort. I am currently taking her for Geography and I find her very tempting and hot!!!! I have the hots for this lady!
Worst teacher ever. I think she's unaware that she's not teaching a middle school class. Very condescending, very abraisive. She once made us each stand up and spin in a circle to make sure we understood the concept of rotation. It's an easy class (I'm getting a 90% and I've missed a lot of class) but it's not worth dealing with such a bad teacher.
I have never in my life met someone so condescending! It is absolutely ridiculous, how she talks to people. This is by far the worst teacher I have ever had! Take her at your own risk!
Very hard to approach; very intimidating; DO NOT BE LATE FOR CLASS, or else she'll embarrass you in front of everyone! Lots of busy work. She thinks she's teaching a 4th Grade class...treats you like it.
You can tell this woman is not only a horrible teacher but a horrible prof. after one class. She is very unreasonable and unflexable. She is very harsh with grading the assingments. She embarisses struggling students. I made an account for the sole purpose of ripping her up. HORRIBLE!! dont take!!
Where do I begin. First of all, avoid her at all costs. Worst experience in all 4 years here at WMU. I feel like she takes pride in marking off petty mistakes. You will never win an argument unless you are one of her teacher pets (she has many). As a geography major, I will delay graduation if it means avoiding her class. THIS IS YOUR FAIR WARNING
makes you do physical excercise if you class is drowsy
Ignorant, condescending, confused about where she teachers. In 4 years of college this is the most pointless class I have ever taken. Tons of busy work, unflexable policy on everything. She seems to enjoy making sure you know she is "smarter" then you. I hate this class, every day is a struggle to make it there.
This class totally drove me away from geography. Dr. Dechano treats her students like elementary kids, grades everything like its for a 400 level class, and yes has her "Pets." If you're not a pet, good luck....and have fun taking a quiz EVERYDAY
Terrible class and terrible teacher. the learning enviornment is horrible... she doesn't do a very good job explaining rules, but when you break one, she lets you know. She likes to "stick it to the man" I DO NOT recommend taking this class.
Rude, disrespectful, power trip. Hope you enjoy being treated like a misbehaving fifth grader. She thrives by making sure students fail, and treating them like imbeciles! Tests are tricky and include random useless opinion based facts. I am typically an A student… I'll be lucky to get a C for this course! Ridiculous!
I'm not sure what everyone else's problem is. She's not really all that bad. You have to go to class and pay attention but she's not demeaning and is very helpful if you need to reschedule an exam like I did. People who fail in this class or feel demeaned are people who don't take the material seriously. If you do, she'll take you seriously.
She gave quizes everyday and they were not multiple choice! One of the hardest courses I have taken at college.
If you are interested in taking a geography class, definitly dont take it with DeChano! It was a huge mistake to take this class, becasue i nearly failed. It seems she loves to see her students fail. Im warming you, dont take this class with Miss Geography of America
This is the worst prof I've ever had. This lady is something, seems like she takes pride in her students failing. i busted in this class for a B. once she stopped class because some kid got up to go to the bathroom. she yelled at him then locked the kid out. this lady has a serious problem! fair warning,DO NOT TAKE!
Dr. D is a great teacher. I had her in the fall of 07. I would say she has her times, but if you pay attention and go to class you can at least pass the class. Learned a lot in the class and her attitude is just like a normal college professor. Turn in everything on time, go to class, and you can have an easy time in the class.
This class seemed to be hard because of the way it was taught, not because of the material. It felt like she didn't care for the students at all, and made the assignemts tricky. Things like using definitions that were different than in the book, or giving problems that were inconsistent with each other. Take a different professor if you can.
She knew her material. It wasn't the class, it was her attitude and teaching style. Your only hope is her TAs (who don't like her either). She once spent 20 minutes of class arguing with us about whether she was busier than the students. That is not what I paid for.
I had her for U.S. and Canada, which should have been an interesting class. It wasn't. She was awful. She seems to hate teaching. I never wanted to ask a question, because if you did, she acted like you were an idiot. She wasted 20 minutes one time finding out who didn't hand in a paper. I got an A, but I hated the class.
Dr. Dechano is a very good instructor! I don't know why people complain about her - yes, she does follow a strict regimen, but she's also fair. If you go to her with a problem, she is more than happy to help you with it; and she's actually THERE during her office hours! The class has a lot of material, but she does thorough and helpful reviews.
Don't know what everyones problem is, she was my chair of my thesis committee and really very helpful and let me do my own thing. I am very lucky to have had her an advisor. She is a huge sports fan which is a plus.
I had her for a Geography class and she is God awful. Every class period she randomly yells and forces you to laugh at lame comics. In class material never relates to labs, exams or the book. She's not easy to talk to either..... I believe she's really crazy and I would rather be taught by a rock!
She is so rude and unhelpful. She gets joy out of failing people. She calls people out in class for unnecessary things that waste valuable time to learn. She would be better off as a wrestler, she has extreme anger issues. I hate geography now because of her. I dreaded going to her class. DO NOT TAKE YOU WILL FAIL!
I am not trying to sound like everyone else that bashes her but she has to change. She would call people out in class for not having their books or if people were sharing and I just wanted to yell out if she knows how much they cost. Labs have very little to do with class and attendance is mandatory b/c of clickers. DONT TAKE WITH HER
I have an 8 a.m. class where she is of the opion that we needed to be treated like middle schoolers. She always stops class to yell at all of us when a few people are asleep. Over 99% of the class is paying attention, you don't need to yell at us. She expects way too much participation from a lecture of this size. DO NOT TAKE CLASSES WITH HER!
Poor teaching etiquette. Not recommended. She has a bad habit of yelling loudly when she becomes personally frustrated with the class. Instead of looking to the class for what she might be able to do differently, she just yells. Good subject matter and labs with good TA's, but terrible lecture. You must show up for iClicker quizzes. Must have book.
Her dry humor jokes are not funny. When people got to leave the classroom, she makes a big deal out of it. Rather than continue to teach the material that matters. Shes a spelling nazi... so watch out people.
she threatened to keep us for the entire class period when people were packing up 3 min early and is cutting the time we have for the final exam by 45 min. 1) we are in college, we can leave whenever we want. 2)the university gives us 2 hours for the exam so we should get 2 hours to take it. she will treat you like you are in 5th grade, do not take
I used to like geography, now I can't stand it thanks to her treating all of us like little kids. I am personally iffended by how she treats us and cannot see how Western continues to keep her as an instructor.
Class was a waste of life...Teacher SUCKS, is rude and tries to be humorous but her attempts are quite dry and fail epicly!!! I would not recommend this class with her to anyone!!!
I thought the class was pretty easy if you paid attention and read the book. She gave us plenty of time to ask her questions, even whole days of reviews. The labs were also pretty easy and the TA's were nice. Sometimes she did get a little angry when other students wouldn't stop talking. If everyone is there to learn and pays attention its easy.
Was very good at using real life demonstrations. Easy to ask questions to and responses were friendly. She knew her material. Dr. D was fair to all with the same rules.
Wonderful teacher, do not listen to the comments rating her poorly, that is coming from bums who think college should cater to them instead of putting in the time like the working world requires. Great at conveying material and available almost any time of day to help you out. TA's = Great (more often than not). Highly Recommend.
I don't know why everybody hates her. Yes, she has a lot of stupid rules, but in the end, you end up learning the material. Tests can be tricky but are doable. Labs are kind of annoying and not always clear, just busy work. Read the book and attend class (mandatory) and you'll do just fine.
She is a very nice lady and loves what she teaches. I really enjoyed going to her class and she was always willing to help me
Very rude teacher. Yells at the class and treats everyone like a baby. Went to her office hours to discuss my class accommodations and really offended me in regards to my learning disability. I feel like she has no respect for her students whatsoever.
She has a lot of rules but they are worth it! She knows her stuff and tests are exactly from the notes in class.
Wow I wish I did not take take this class. She is just a terrible person, like all the way down to her core. Class is not that hard but having her as a teacher makes me dread going to class every single day.
I have no idea what the person below is talking about. Great professor, helpful in office hours. Lay off bro lol
Dr. D is a great professor who teaches very structured and interesting classes. Took EIA with her and it was a great experience. She's extremely helpful and always makes time for students.
She treats the class like we are children then grades as though we are grad students. She constantly yells at people for using their phones or reading another book and in reality her yelling is more distracting than anything else. Don't take this class unless you have to. She smart and all but having to deal with that attitude is not worth it.
She's a good professor. She doesn't like electronics in class. Attend class, she writes all class material out by hand. iclicker questions sometimes and short in-class worksheets once in a while. Not a hard class if you actually study. Uses book in class as reference sometimes but you do need it.
Interesting class, but to get a good grade you need to put some effort in. With that said, this is what a 4000 level college course should be like. Assignments will boost your grade if you take the time to do well and tests are all essay, so you need to really know your stuff. Taking her again next semester and would recommend her to anyone.
Attend the labs. Ask Questions and have a clicker!
Dr. D. was my favorite professor last semester. The class wasn't easy, but she was great. She was always willing to help and give guidance if you simply asked for it. I would take her class again and I have recommended her class to my friends.
Writes all her notes out by hand with the class, so you'll get every word. She's a great person, very educated, and wants to see students succeed. Seeing her in the halls semesters after being in her class brightens my day, She'll always say hello.
I paid a lot of money to learn how to calculate what time it is in a different time zone and where the wind blows. More work than many upper-level classes. Don't take if you don't have to.
Dr. D has good control over the class. Most of the students are underclassmen and it's easy to see from some of the comments they have not mastered the basic life skill of respect. She will learn and remember your name within a few weeks. She expects you to know the material, but gives it at a pace you can keep up with. She is a quality Prof.
This class is an easy A if you're willing to attend class, pay attention, and go to lab. The labs are easy and are 40% of your grade. Just study everything from lecture and lab for the exams. She has high energy and passion about what she's teaching which makes lectures entertaining. I would definitely recommend taking this class with her.
Professor Dechano was brilliant. She was incredibly kind and entertaining, but absolutely knew to crack down when necessary.
Really enjoyable class. Took as gen-ed for science but gained an appreciation for geography. The week of an exam you might have some extra work but other than that, very little homework outside of class. For exams MEMORIZE THE NOTES. Just put them in quizlet, it won't take long and if you've gone to every lecture and took good notes, you'll be fine
Dr. Dechano is an amazing professor. She likes to crack jokes to make the lectures fun, and she's very willing to help any student. I took one class with her and we kept in touch afterwards and she helped me with advising for graduation. She is more than willing to go out of her way to help. I very much respect her!
This professor is not helpful she is very stingy of her grade, specially for international student you better do not take her class, she is understandable, a little bit cocky/ arrogant. you better not to enroll to here geo class.
Only 4 tests over all, a handful of homeworks, most of the grade comes from the lab. Her exams aren't too hard, but her grading is really really harsh. Her and the TA's are harsh graders but also funny people. They make the class not completely awful. Drops a lab and test. Textbook mostly used in class, rarely outside of class.
The whole class is meh, take with someone else
Dr. D was awesome. Probably my favorite prof this semester. Don't know what everyone on this site's issue is with her, but she is excellent and incredibly knowledgeable. Lectures are clear, well-explained, and organized. My TA was pretty awful, but the labs were still fairly easy and are 40% of your grade. She drops one exam and one lab.
Dr. D is absolutely brilliant. As a 5000 level, this class was extremely hard, but her teaching pushed me to new heights. She is very tough and means business, but is also very compassionate and personable. I would have taken the class again in a heartbeat and would recommend for anyone who wants to seriously learn. A complete gem.
Dr. D, as she prefers to be addressed, is the best professor at WMU. She is not like any other teacher here who just likes to read off the slides, she writes the slides on paper with the class. However, she does not post slides online and there is no textbook for this class so if you skip, it will cost you.
Dr. D is one of the most passionate professors you will ever have!! She clearly cares a lot about what she teaches and it makes it a lot easier to learn. Her teaching style is very easy to follow and understand. Shes a queen!
Nice, makes class easy just put in the work on your end. Very chill
Don't take the online version of this class. It was a new set of notes to directly copy and then take a quiz on every week. She didn't even start posting videos of her going over the material until week nine. Might be good if you learn well that way.
This class was a waste of my money. Really not sure why I need to learn about dirt and glaciers for aviation. But also this class is heavy in stupid memorization of really specific things. The labs are very harshly graded and she didnt make lectures for the online class until after midterms. Talk about unhelpful.
She's really friendly and I like her as a person. But the online version of this class was ridiculous. Labs were time consuming and exams were pretty hard. She does drop your lowest exam score and I think she curved the final. But be prepared to memorize the 12 types of soils, the glacier types, and a ton of other useless info
If you want a teacher that teaches at 300mph then this is the one for you.
If you are interested in making universe, this will teach you everything what happen in the earth.
Great teacher for Physical geography, she takes notes with you in class so if you miss class you'll miss a class worth of notes. She tells you what you'll see on the tests and the final. The unit about soils and biomes make you want to sleep but making a quizlet really helps with remembering it, but in some work outside of class and you'll do great
Although attendance isn't mandatory, all notes and exam material come from lectures. Class is very memorization heavy such as knowing all the different soil types and climate types. She does allow one exam out of the three normal exams (not final) to be dropped. The exam on soil types is the best one to not take and take the dropped grade
Teaches very fast, and says attendance isn't mandatory but if you miss a class, it feels like you missed a whole semester of information and she doesn't even post the notes or how to solve the math portions if you're struggling. Really annoying.
Overall a great prof. Class can be a little boring. Not a ton of work outside of class. Put in the work and pay attention... you'll pass with at least a B. No extra credit offered at all.
This professor gives her lectures way too fast you barely have time to take notes. Then for the test the notes you do take have nothing to do with whats on the test. She gives a study guide each test which seems awesome but that also has nothing to do with her exams. Be prepared to study everything just to take a test with nothing on it.
I would not take unless you're an expert as geography. Her tests are difficult and what she claims is on it, is not. The study guides have little to do with the test and it is hard to tell what is actually important. I would recommend doing well on your first and second test because she drops one test score and the third one is very difficult.
Dr Dee was a pretty decent professor. Be ready to take a lot of notes and be ready for pretty hard in person exams.
Dr D is really nice. Once you talk to her a few times and if you participate, it makes the class way more fun. She really cares about your success and wants the best for you. Try and not skip class though. The more you are there, the better you succeed.
Dr. D is a great teacher that is very passionate about and experienced within her field. Physical Geography is a 4 credit class, so it has a very high weight on your GPA. She handwrites notes in class which is very beneficial. Labs are oftentimes tedious/busy work not related to exam material, but worthwhile due to them being 40% of your grade.
Dr. D is a good professor, just kind of harsh sometimes. Definitely don't miss class, you get points for attendance & you will miss a lot of notes. The labs are never graded consistently and can be difficult. You definitely need to study all of your notes, not just the study guides she gives you for the exams.
she is very honest and is whiling to help you so I recommend you ask for help. but the class felt more like a high school class and sometimes she can come off too strong when teaching subjects
This class is supposed to be a 1050, but if you are not a geo major be ready to struggle. This class is ridiculously difficult for a 1050. It seems like Dr. Dechano requires verbatim answers from her lectures on homework. This class requires outside study sources as some questions and answers are not fully covered in class.
I genuinely have no idea how I passed this class, unless you are a geography master, you will struggle. There is so much info on the lectures and if you miss even one you are screwed. The labs are very confusing, and I was only able to pass because I asked the TA's questions like every 5 minutes. Very boring class and would not take again.
overall a good professor. she can be a bit harsh sometimes but i think she's easy to understand and was helpful whenever i went to her for help. she talks about so much new stuff every day so maybe don't take this class if you skip frequently because you will struggle
I was a little weary of taking GEO1050 because of her reviews, but honestly, she's a good professor who is knowledgeable and flexible if you need to talk. While attendance is not necessary, it isn't smart to miss a class, as your notes are your best study guides for the exams. This class is not an "easy A," but it's not hard if you pay attention.
Dr. D is a great instructor who cares about her students. Skipping class isn't ideal since her handwritten lectures are important for weekly labs and as study guides. The material gets boring as the semester progresses and heavy on memorizing. As a non-major, it's a challenging course, and I'm glad I don't have to take another geography class.
Dr. D is a very good teacher and very caring for her students, but if you're not good at science you will for sure struggle. This class I thought I was going to fail but as long as you do good on the labs like I did you will pass.
I was scared coming into this class. I didn't know what to expect. Dr.D was actually very welcoming and approachable. She will break anything down for you in office hours. Don't be afraid to ask questions. Make sure you attend classes or you won't know what you're doing in labs. I missed 2 the entire semester and almost bombed. Keep that in mind.
Dr. D's class was the biggest class I had this semester, but she was the professor that I felt like I was familiar with the most. She gives multiple opportunities for extra credit and tells you what will be on the labs and exams. She is also helpful during lab and I got the impression that she cares a lot about her students' success.
