GREAT lecturer... VICIOUS marker. Likable enough you don't wanna throw things.

sexy in that tragic ophelia kinda way
Yikes, she killed me on the midterm, but class is relatively unboring
I love this woman. Not in a ****-stalker kind of way, but she kicks ass.
great lecturer, insightful, and easy on the eyes
Can't complain except that the courses she teaches are usually ones you loathe
Ally Mcbeal that marks hard
Lisa is so brilliant. I have no idea where she comes up with this stuff
Brilliant. Really. Pushes you to think and makes you see. Take her.
The best prof you could hope for. Nice and very brilliant!
She tended to be a bit liberal with the class discussions in English 100 as she never told students when she was wrong but she manages to do her best to keep the class entertaining. Totally plays into the hands of teacher's pets as well. Not bad though.
One of the best, if not the best, professors in the English department.
Horrible pedantic teacher. She wastes class time on useless garbage that has no bearing to the course. False and very flippant attitude is anoying especially when you ask for help. If you hate men and want to be ignorant she is for you.
Love her style. She engages the class in discussion and always wants to hear what we're thinking. She can be a bit brash at times, but it's forgiveable. Overall one of my favourite profs :o)!
Always tries to engage in class discussion, slightly unorganized in terms of lectures at times, but usually enthusiastic and always covers what you need to know. Can tell she cares.
Used to be the best, engaging and insightful. Unfortunetly, has lost her way in the mediocrity that is UNBC. No longer tough on those who say assinine things in class. Allows pointless, vague and idiotic statements to count as input. I miss the old Lisa.
she's a good public speaker! the classes were unorganized in terms of taking correct and usable notes, but she does love what she teaches, and it really shows.
She is not approachable - be cautious. She is not clear about what she expects, and if I ever hear the word "perspecuity" one more time I'm going to scream!
Excellent professor. Very clear, and it's obvious when she's covering the topic that she loves what she's teaching. She's a lit eccentric but that's part of what makes her a great prof. After all, according to her, "nothing makes her happier than a severed head" :) SHAKESPEARE RULES!
i don't know what to say about Dr. Dickson...she's ok i guess...
very nice and entertaining
Perhaps Freud was right, and sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. I suppose the navel gazing english profs like this one would be out of work if they had to acknowledge that. The scientiffic method at least dictates that you prove your outlanding theories.
Entertaining style, but it gets annoying quickly. Takes herself and her courses way too seriously. Loves to hear herself talk. Chooses dull, obscure readings more appropriate for a history, philosophy, or PoliSci course. Doesn't teach how to analyze or interpret literature, which is needed on exams.
Since the course IS a survey of British Lit, the readings were appropriate, although some of them were dry. Likes to cram a lot of reading into single blocks if running behind, which is not good.
So rigid and inflexible, that if it wasn't for her charisma and superficial friendliness, she would be one of the university's least popular professors.
First and second year students will hate, loath and detest her. Once you catch on to her way of teaching whe is awesome!! Very passionate about her work, too. You learn more from the hard profs who don't let you get away with being inadequate.
Well intentioned, but awful. 80% student comments, and the topics of conversation are often too obvious and shallow for a 300 level course. Her priorities are messed up too; we spent over a class on the most stupid scene in Shakespeare's least respected play (Titus 2.4) and 30 secs on its final act.
Excellent teacher. The direction her lectures took were always interesting.Very funny and has a large morbid streak that is always entertaining to see who is going to die next.Great readings and fun class.Great professor all round. Doesn't tolerate dunderheads well.
talk about dual personality! entertaining but i've learned nothing, and i only take her because it fits graduation requirements. What is with her and south park? i'm not paying her to be a ditz and talk about them, nor am i doing it to do a play - in short, it could be better!
I've had english classes at this university with almost every prof in the faculty, and I've learned the most from her. She even let's the idiots participate and feel valued (generous in my opinion).
allows way too many student comments. she just asks a question or makes a short statement and then gets 6-10 students to comment on it. i payed $400+ to be taught by an expert, not my peers. also, i don't like how she teaches plays from act 1 to 5, and never discusses the play and themes as a whole.
She knows what she's about, which is rare for this university's abominable Engl. dept., but her major flaw is an extreme reliance on group work and class opinions. I didn't pay tuition to hear the opinion of the brainless twits who puke up their puerile drivel at every opportunity.
Anyone who can make you fall in love with Edmund Spenser and his Faerie Queene is a gem in my books! She values her students and lets them down lightly if they are off the mark! I think her ability to engage the class is unique and helps keep everyone on the right track course wise! But don't be fooled - she may be petite but she can be ruthless =)
want to go to class and listen to student opinions? You have found your teacher. if you want to be taught and prove your knowledge with meaningfull assignments then go enroll in a beeler or guest class. If you have her, learn to regurgitate pro female gender studies, thats all she is interested in. should be fired and have her degrees taken away

AAAAARGH. Very frustrating. After a few weeks it just isn't funny anymore.
can get a little annoying, and her attention to meaningless details is a little OCD. she is one of the better english profs tho, just be prepared for alot of 'why?' and excessive class discussion.
Great class, and the instruction was excellent as always. This class could have been very tedious, but was made very interesting by top quality instruction. Highly recommended.
I love the class. Lisa is a great instructor and she is a fair marker. I would take a class with her anytime. She makes Shakespeare fun!
She is very friendly and outgoing, but her essay requirements are a little ridiculous. She genuinly loves what she is teaching, but then leaves most of the lecture for student discussion which is extremely aggravating after paying 400+ for the class
Excellent instructor. If you're willing to put the effort into it, you'll get lots out of any of her classes.
She is annoying. Hard marker, knows what shes talking about, and VERY peppy
very academic
She makes me want to stab myself in the head with a fork and swish it around inside the part of my brain that is responsible for interpretation of poetry.
Waaaay too much emphasis on student comments and I didn't learn anything that I couldn't read in the text book. She's enthusiastic but sometimes it's a little too much to take.
Avoid taking a 1st year English course with this teacher. She is an extremely hard marker. Would never take a course with her again.
She is fun and interesting and definately has the best touchdown dance in the English department at UNBC!!!!!
Shakespeare Rocks...So does Donne...and Spenser...and Marlowe
Lisa is hilarious. She's full of life and I love the way she teaches. Instead of standing in the front of the classrom lecturing, she talks to us, and asks for opinions. She's excellent. She can be a tough marker, but thats just because she wants you to suceed! Definatly someone to take a class from!! SHAKESPEARE IS LOVE
wow the class was over my head, but i was also a first year and im not an english major. lisa is brilliant and amazing, kinda wish i could be her -or be in her head atleast. good class but you need to know your stuff
Dr. ****son was one of the most eloquent professors I had the pleasure of meeting during my time at UNBC. I encourage all English majors to enroll in on of her classes as soon as possible. She is a phenomenal resource, and amazing analyst. Don't miss out on a great opportunity!

i've actually taken a bunch of classes with her and she's amazing. She really knows what she's talking about and brings enthusiasm to whatever she's talking about. I have her for theory, and the class could be the most boring thing on earth, but it's not cause she makes it interesting. My all time favourite prof...take her classes!
An awesome prof. I highly recommend taking classes with her even if you're not in the English department and need to fill an elective her classes are amazing!!!
Awesome Prof! Smart, Witty, good teacher, enthusiastic and well spoken. I love her classes and recommend them to everyone. she delves into the real themes and ideas behind what she teaches. Way Better than Kirsten Guest. SHE ROCKS!
She's awesome. She knows her stuff, knows how keep a class from getting dull, and demands participation to the point where it's almost gunpoint...it's awesome. A tough marker but it's deserved.
WORST prof ive ever had, doesn't give back assignments in good time (essay outline back a week before essay due), no respect for the fact that we pay to be in that class and for HER TO ACTUALLY TEACH IT. no more group work, just do your job.concept maps are not helpful! hate her, she's annoying, pretentious, elitist and not actually that smart. BAD
Dr. Dickson expects a lot from her students. So, don't expect a hand-holder. She also expects a lot from herself as an educator. She is a good teacher that challenges her class, and herself, to perform at the level expected by her, and of her. She gives her students the tools needed to succeed and points out how to use them. I got my money's worth.
Absolutely awesome. the best professor I have ever had!
Excellent professor. Amazing knowledge of course materials. Her preparation for class and engagement with the students goes above and beyond what should be expected of any professor!
Amazing Prof. Challenging, but helpful and encourages students to learn more and stretch themselves. It's too bad she's going on sabbatical for 2010/11
I didn't really like her when I took ENGL 211 with her because I didn't find her lectures very helpful but when I took ENGL 280 with her she was amazing. Shakespeare is what she is best at. The Hamlet course I took with her was one of my favorite courses in my entire undergrad. She loves to teach.
Best English prof at UNBC! Her passion for the subject material comes across loudly and her lectures are witty, engaging and fun. Eccentric, eclectic and downright awesome. Although she does crush on David Bowie, eew
I had Lisa my entire English Degree, and she was the only teacher who actually cared that I succeeded. She told me flat out that she knows I have the potential for being amazing. She inspired me to teach like she would, and have the same passion for my subject. Lisa is amazing, and she always was/is there to help!
The class is only interesting if you like english. We did a few fun assignments that weren't just writing essays so that was good. She is also pretty funny. She has a lot of random stories that just make you laugh. I think she really cares that you do good if you put in the time.
Not being an English guy, I found this course hard. But she went to the extremes to give us the best university teaching I have seen. Tons of support and direction if you took the time to really listen to what she was saying. A five star prof. Plus she's quirky and fun. She turned me on to university and English.
Theory ain't easy, but Dr. Dickson made it clear and fun, for the most part.
her teaching style is amazing and it learned so much through this course. she is helpful and makes class fun. I would take so many more of her courses
Amazing teacher!! She is hilarious, really knows what she's talking about, and engaging. Gets the class discussing ideas and I've learned and gained so much being in her course. I'm already judging all my English profs against her!
Phenomenal prof. Genuinely cares about students and not only does she know a ridiculous amount about her subject, she also knows how to teach it. Very real, warm, down to earth, approachable and has a great sense of humour. UNBC is lucky to have her.
Hard Marker. Treats students like young children. When asked questions about clarifying assignment expectations she just says "refer to the assignment handout." Her class sucks.
The best prof I've ever had. Fun, engaging and great at explaining difficult concepts - if you're actually listening! Is excellent at explaining essay structure. Hard marker, expects a lot from her students. Group work is great for circulating ideas and getting in-depth discussions going. Also: concept maps saved my life.
This class has got to be my favourite upper-level! I can't think of another class where I have grown so much, as a student, as I did in this one. She challenges you, but she brings her all to class, and makes all your work worth it. She is a phenomenal prof. Definitely recommend- take this class!
I learned more in this course than in any other course I've taken. She lectures infrequently and uses a lot of collaborative group exercises and discussions, but these exercises help to build the skills necessary for assignments and exams. She is very accessible and gives plenty of advice and help when asked.
Really passionate and engaging professor, but a really tough marker. The entire course is completely participation based, and often I have no idea what is expected for the actual assigments. Can be hard for anyone who struggles with little to no direction. But she is a really great professor over all, just difficult to get good grades in her class
Worst English class I have taken. She is disorganized and puts most of the work on students, rarely lecturing and relying on group discussion, which doesn't work since most people don't even read the plays. Workload is very heavy, about twice that of other upper-year classes, and her standards are unreasonable. More work for lower grades. Avoid.
I have enjoyed other courses with her, but the quality of her teaching has plummeted in the last couple of years. Her new experimental methods rarely work well in classes, which are often disorganized, unproductive, and uninformative. Workload and expectations were unreasonable and unrealistic (7 assignments plus homework, with harsh grading).
A bit of a tough grader but she really seems to love to teach and I've learned lots from her class :) she's very eccentric in the best way possible, think fun aunt
Lisa is a difficult marker with high expectations. Her instructions are SO long that they make no sense. I enjoy her lectures & her passion is evident. My biggest complaint is that she did a poll about going in-person during COVID. Majority voted to stay online and despite the results, she moved to in-person. That felt unsafe & disrespectful.
Great professor with some really engaging lessons. Lots of her assignments and tasks really set you up for success in your future courses while the schedule works well with readings on one day and group work on another.
I love Dr Dickson so much she's actually my angel
