Awsome teacher, just be sure to do all of your assin. ON time and come to class. Will help you with your paper drafts if you e-mail them ahead of time. Being teachers pet my help your grade if you are stuggling.
She is an extremely tough grader. I poured my heart out on many of our assignments and she would always give me no higher than a 70%. I finally had to drop her course.
This is the hardest class I've ever taken; she is a total control freak. You have to play her games and never be late to do well. She also is an extremely tough grader. A "B" is a privaledge in her class. Students were so discouraged that they seemed to hate reading and learning after.
CRAZY FREAK!
Get out now!!!! she gave me 3 zero's i didnt deserve which screwed up my grade and now i dont know if i can transfer in 2 years. All because of her.
Her class was easy and fun to be in. I got an A on all my essays with ease. Recomend that you learn to write in PIE paragraphs because she grades heavily on that. I looked forward to every class and she gives you plenty of chances to do well on her papers.
This is not a typical college class. It is not lecture style. Lots of class participation. Rubrics for essays lets you receive the grade you worked for. Plenty of chances to get an A. I don't know what the other raters problems were. This class is cake, just do the work. Most of the work is in class. She takes suggestions, too. Good teacher.
Hands down the worst teacher I've ever had--and I got the highest grade in the class. Not only does she hand out F's liberally, she enjoys it, announces it aloud and makes jokes about it. Her class is militaristic, disciplinarian and has little to do with work. Her classes drop from 30 to 7 in four classes flat... and she doesn't seem to know why.
i liked ms duran a lot! she was a great teacher and her essays weren't hard... she was always willing to help if you had questions... by far one of my favorite teachers!
Lisa Durans class is a lot of fun. If you are shy, you probably wont like it, because there are quite a few games, and its always interactive. None of the work is too overwhelming, and the essays are pretty straightforward. And I think shes pretty cute, for a teacher, shes definitely hot, and her comments on my essays are fun!
I love Lisa...she is an amazing teacher/person. She is very precise about directions/due dates but if you keep up on them you will be just fine. Her class is definately not for slackers. There are plenty of chances to re-do essays and get help, all you have to do is ask! The class had lots of class participation and i had fun :)
Ms. Duran is great teacher. Her policies on assignments are unbending but she is very helpful when you ask for assistance with papers, she always explains assignments exactly how she wants them so if you follow her guide lines you’ll never get lower than a B, and she's pretty hot too.
Awesome teacher!
I dont know what some of these students problems are but if you do your work the grade is easy. This teacher is spunky and very passionate about her work. If you want to understand how to write essays this teacher is great. I never once felt like she was having a bad day.
If you follow the homework assignments listed on her charts, you will succeed. Its easy to pass if you just follow the requirements given within each essay. She is an extremely cool teacher, and i really enjoyed being in her class. She does get a little scatter-brained but she is very orgainized with her handouts.
She really likes P.I.E. so P.I.E your paragraphs or you'll pretty much fail. She's very strict about deadlines so don't procrastinate. Those unit schedules will become your bible.
Ms. Duran is a really nice teacher. I thought she was too strict in the begining, but as i got used to her teaching style the class become easier. She is a really fair grader and gives lots of bonus points. keep up with assignment deadlines, and you will do well in her class.
Mrs duran was a great teacher she has her own style of writing and teacher but its a fun class to attend to everyday. i took summer class with her and she made it fun and still worth a great grade
I've never resented having to write within somebodys' "box" so much. Too structured and formulaic, too many rules to remember. Got A's in my next two english courses but a 'B' in this one. A lot of class participation/groupwork crap.
Summer class was beyond stressful. Just essay after essay...actually made me cry. But do everything and you'll pass. Ignores peoples lives, gives only a couple days to read over 100 pages of a book that you will be tested on.
picks the most boring books in the world, i dont know how i got through them.
I definitely recommend her! You gotta keep up with the work and try not to procrastinate. She lays everything out for you so you know what's expected. She grades very fair. There are a lot of extra credit opportunities, so you don't have to stress out too much if you struggle with the reading/essays. Pretty easy A!
This is the worst teacher I ever had. Her class was a political stage and if you disagree with her view you cannot do anything right the rest of the semester. She would consistently give me scores of zero on my essays because they 'were not revised enough'(which is up to her discretion) I dropped her class and the next semester I got an A.
Worst teacher I have ever had. Super tough about turning things in on time. My printer was broken so I brought my laptop to class to show her my essay was done. I asked if I showed it to her if I could print it out after class. She asked the class if that seemed fair, they all said yes. Then she said whats the rule. 5 hours of work gone with an f
Duran is friendly, very clear on assignments, and willing to help you. She expects work to be done in a particular manner, and she expects common courtesy.
worst teacher in LPC...she has favourite students and if you are not one of them, she'll give you a hard time. She loves talking...i would recommend you to take another english teacher and u'll enjoy the class.
She is overall a really nice person. Really strict on her rules but she is madly obsessed with the P.I.E format on everything you turn in. On any form of writing, if it isn't in P.I.E format she will basically give you a 0.
A teacher who is obviously very passionate about her job. She was always very helpful and fair throughout the semester. She doesn't feed you answers, just as a good professor should. She grades pretty tough, as she should. Anyone who complains about her teaching obviously can't stand working hard. She is a fantastic teacher and I learned a lot.
More concerned if the work was done to her standards than the quality of the work. Not a flexible teacher. If you have unique or personal reading/writing styles, this is not the class for you. If you are good at molding to what the teacher wants, then you will do fine.
This is my first time rating a teacher, Ms. Duran is great at teaching creativity, and developing critical thinking. Took class as pre-requisite so I had little interest in the class, and she made it very enjoyable and fun. Class wasn't easy, but it wasn't hard either. She went extra steps to help people outside of class time as well.
She plays favorites and does not hide the FACT. She displays grades on the board and has her grade book open with all student grades visible. She will tell you your grade in front of other classmates to intimidate/demean you. She must have taught elementary school at one time. To sum it up, her class is not for the faint of heart. CRUEL
The Professor teaches with clarity and helpfulness as to how she wants you to write papers (main focus of the class in 7). She employs a rigrious method that will help you in later classes. She also makes the class enjoyable in a discussion style setting. It was not easy, but she helped me get through it with a good grade.
Ms. Duran is a cool person and lively. But, most of class is done in group work, which I hate. She's very strict on P.I.E. format and expects you to know writer's terms. Very interesting books picked for reading, but I didn't like her teaching style. Dropped and took another instructor (McCann) , learned a lot, and got an A.
As much as she'd love for me to have given her a 1 (Hard) for easiness, I can't. If you find this class hard, you should consider dropping out. She is very clear with expectations, very fair, excited about seeing students succeed (couldn't ask for more). Very strict on PIE formatting (don't worry, you'll pick it up quickly) And she facilitates fun!
The poor grade I received in this class was primarily due to lack of effort on my part, but to be honest, not once did I get the impression that Ms. Duran knew she was teaching critical thinking and not mediating a book club.
I'm so glad I decided to take Lisa for Eng 1A. I looked forward to coming to Lisa's class every week! Lisa is super quirky and thinks everyone is hilarious. Her teaching style IN CLASS is easy to follow & fun. Her HW load is hefty and the essays do not stop. Also, she expects a LOT out of you, so give her your best. I really recommend taking her.
I figure i'd fill this out before taking the final in-class essay. The class is tough, definitely one of the harder graders. You will have to put a lot of effort into the class. Her expectations are high but her instructions are pretty clear. If you need help, ASK FOR IT. Go to her office hour regularly, definitely saved my life.
She is probably the best English teacher I've had. Very intelligent, I learned a lot from this class. It is a very structured and organized class. You never are confused about what is going on. It's a tough class, but if you are consistent, the grade will come!
Lisa is a very hard teacher to take, don't take her over the summer is you want an easy A. However, she is very structured and if you do your homework and follow directions you will get an A. I learned a lot in her class and she was very helpful and a good teacher.
This class is not an easy A, but she is a good teacher who will challenge you to become a better writer. Her class is probably taught at a University level which helps prepare you for later classes. Very nice lady who wants to help you learn and is willing to spend one on one time with you to help you do so. Overall positive experience.
She is a VERY VERY good teacher. I learned so much. My writing skills definately improved and she teaches you techniques that can be useful in other classes when it comes to writing essays. Although she is strict on what she expects from you, and is a rough grader, as long as you do the work and honestly really try you will be good.
Ms. Duran is an amazing teacher. She's so easy to talk to, she makes the class fun and enjoyable and she offers extra credit. I myself am not great with essays but as long as you attend, do your homework and reading you are basically guaranteed an A.
I really enjoyed her class. She's a tough grader but she helps you to make your work exactly what she wants in class. GO TO HER OFFICE HOURS. That's where I've gotten the most help from her, and she is more than willing to help. If you put in the effort you can get an A. I would absolutely recommend taking her class!
She is a great teacher! Super funny and nice. There a ton of essays, but what English class doesn't have a lot of essays? You read a couple novels throughout the class. She is a super tough grader. She makes you sit in a circle which is awkward at first but it actually helps you speak up. You have to share your essays aloud and discuss books alot.
DONT TAKE THIS TEACHER IF YOU WANT AN EASY A OR B. I have never received anything below a B on my previous essays and when I took her class for Eng 1A, I received F's and D's on my papers. She teaches very well but her grading criteria is out of context. Save yourself the trouble and pick someone else.
This class is definitely the hardest english i have ever taken. I have not received over a D in her essays. If you do not write or think like her, you will receive an F or if lucky a D. She is one of the nicest ladies i've met and shes a great teacher, but if you want an A or B,this is not the class.
This teacher is one of the worst teachers I've ever had. Actually is the worst. I did every assignment in her class and I still finished off with a D. The final couldn't even bump up my grade. If you are looking to pass a class with a high grade or easy class this isn't it. Shes a nice lady but she grades harsh. Doesn't care if you pass or fail.
She is a self-proclaimed hard grader, and peers seem to agree. If you know PIE paragraphs, you're close to golden in this class. I cannot stress enough to go talk to her for advice. She will tell you explicitly what to do to make your paper better, and it improves it by a whole letter grade. Last but not least, don't procrastinate on the research..
Took during the summer, so many essays, so little time! Take during the fall if you can! Gave lots of extra credit though.
Discusses books in class, so you may skim the book- just fill it with sticky notes w/ideas & you are good! Understanding the concept of "Pearls" in your essay was kinda difficult to grasp, but once you understand how to incorporate those in your papers, writing essays is a piece of cake. Easy final, gives extra credit, ended the class with an A+!
I adored Lisa's class! She is so relatable and a wonderful prof. Clear grading criteria, understands the stress of school, and is absolutely there for you! She works hard for her students and assigns great reading! Great books, great articles, and overall good English experience. Just be ready to participate and write in PIE.
She is an awesome teacher, but defiantly makes you work for your grade. As long as you show up to class, read and do work on time you will do great!
Lots of essays. She is a hard grader, but very nice.
Shes a great teacher. But her grading really sucks. You either write and do everything her way or you Fail. I had to drop her class because my grade would stay a D. Ive never gotten bad grades on papers ive written but with her i got D's in most of them. I honestly dont recommend her at all. Most people hate her by the end of the course.
She is very opinionated and assigns a lot of essays. if she doesn't like something about your paper, but you and other people like it she won't care and will still make you change it. There's homework every night and she doesn't give a lot of time to do some assignments.
Lisa was one of my favorite teachers. She is very specific on what she wants she wants in essays but is always ready to sit down with you and give you good feedback, you just have to put in the effort and work for your grade. She does not give any homework aside from essays. She is a friendly person and easily approachable.
Practically read and wrote essays all semester; not much different from a high school course in my opinion. Interesting title choices. Be prepared to adapt to a new writing format (very easy). Cares about you ability to learn new criteria. Helpful when needed! I recommend this professor if this is your first English course at Las Positas.
Easily one of the most amazing people I've ever come across. I stayed after class one day hanging out with her for around 2 hours. She's an incredible person, but also the best teacher I've ever had. There's a lot of work in the middle of the semester with plenty of papers. If you follow her instructions then you will do fine. The final is free pts
Lisa is by far one of my favorite professors I have came across so far! She is very kind and is always willing to work with you when you need help. The one thing that will make this class easier for yourself is to follow instructions! She uses a specific format for her essays, learn it and you will be fine. --ASK FOR HELP!
Lisa will make you learn how to write an essay using PIE paragraphs. It's hard at first but once you pick it up,you'll be thankful for life. I use her format for most of the essays I've written since and get an A. her class is tough but you will learn. She wants her student to pass even grading harshly at the end she will give lots of extra credit
This was my very first college class I'd ever taken. I was thrilled by Professor Duran's energy, knowledge, and level of compassion she showed her students. This was my favorite class and my favorite professor. The level of learning that goes in her classroom is superior to others. I learned the art of writing and love it! I miss the dynamics. :)
Absolutely the worst english teacher i have ever encountered in my life. She has no way of explaining her own thoughts yet expects you to fully understand everything she is thinking. She hates anything not done her way and does not care about your grade. She will take points off for asking for feedback.
Professor Duran was great! Took her for Eng 1A. The way she likes the essays is unique, takes some adjusting but is super easy once you got it down. A lot of the class took a while to understand, but she is very helping. In class, all you do is go over the essay criteria or review the book (makes you read 2 novels but both are super easy reads)
I've taken Professor Duran for English 1A and English 4. While it takes some time to get used to the style she wants her papers written in, she takes the time to help students adjust and thrive in her class. Assigned readings are easy points and the content is used in writing the papers assigned. No homework, quizzes, or tests.
She is a good person but HORRIBLE teacher and her grading is amazingly Unfair. She wants everyone to write what she thinks, otherwise you have failed the class. Nothing satisfies her. She is not clear in her explanations and I haven't learned anything from her class. Do yourself a favor and Do Not waist you time by taking her class.
She's a very kind woman, but I don't see her as a good teacher. She's an extremely tough grader and can't explain things very well. The whole class asks her questions about an assigment for a good hour and a half because she doesn't know how to explain what we are expected to do. If your writing isn't EXACTLY how she wants it, you will fail.
She is one of the worst professors i have taken. 4 essays in a semester. then on first essay, 1 get an A, 2 get b, and 7 get C, and 8 get D, 2 get F. What is this. She sometimes gives extra credit, like when she is late. But over all, she should retire. Her lectures are not even lectures. At the end of the semester, the whole class was cussing her
This class is not a slack off class. Professor Duran cares a lot and will help you adjust. do not stay quiet!!! ASK FOR HELP!!! I know its scary but you will thrive if you communicate with her. No homework/tests.
She gave good feedback on essays and on ways that could be improved. There is a lot of workload and essays every week.
Seriously one of the worst teachers I've had. More than half the class dropped by the end of the semester. She graded so harshly. If she doesn't like the topic you choose, you will get a bad grade, even if it is well written. She grades every single paper differently if you compare it with classmates. Take ANY other professor. Too much reading too
A great person but terrible teacher. She gave me an F on an essay that met all the requirements and told me that it didn’t follow the prompt correctly even though she reviewed my essay outline before hand and said it was all good. Also gave me NEGATIVE 10 points on a two part assignment because I forgot to do the second half on time
Harsh grader, rude, tons of reading assignments.
Uses Stephen King's "On Writing" as textbook; Eng 1A is not writing publishable fiction. Grades based mostly on rigid adherence to format (single-spaced or double?) & not content & style. Her own example of "Deep dive" is superficial (Royalty from "Carrie" gives King "financial security", not "$400,000".) Instructions are detailed yet unclear.
Worst English professor I've ever had. Extremely unclear on directions, rude, assigns a lot of work, and overall does not put any effort in making the class enjoyable.
Hardest A I have ever worked for. She gave time consuming assignments that were graded harshly and not by the rubric. Would only give 24 hr extensions in cases of emergency, and gave embarrassing public feedback (not me personally but others in my class). She helped me strengthen a thesis statement and then graded it poorly after I had submitted.
There are a lot of papers. She is also a tough grader. I will say she definitely improved my writing because of her tough requirements and her feedback was really good and clear. You will definitely become a better writer after this class, but I do think she needs to lighten up on the requirements a little.
This professor was very hard. She unmotivated me every chance she could get. She graded very hard, while giving the same feedback every time even when I fixed the mistakes of the last feedbacks. I took hours on my essays and I would never get above a C, and I even had an adult with a masters english degree to help me out a bit. Do not take her.
This class was taken for credit, and it was the worst class I have ever taken. She was very hard with her grading, rude when giving feedback, and expected too much from her students. The essays were very hard and she had unrealistic expectations of how the paper was supposed to be written. She was unmotivating. I advise you not to take this class.
Does not give clear feedback and will not answer a specific question about an essay as if it was a test that you cannot get feedback as if it was cheating.
Gives nothing but unhelpful feedback. There are no examples of what exactly she expects from the essay prompts, so you're pretty much clueless while doing all the assignments then she grades it harshly. Even if you're good at writing I bet she'd still pick it apart somehow. Take a better course with a better professor.
At first she was alright, but throughout the semester she's been quite difficult and provided feedback that was irrelevant to any question I asked. She's a nice lady but is quite strict on grading. I would not take this class again.
I took the online two-month summer class. Extremely picky grading criteria. There is little to no creative freedom in this class and you are expected follow EXACTLY what she wants. Her prompts are not hard by any means, but she does have very confusing instructions that are somehow lengthy but unclear. You HAVE TO reach out to her to succeed.
When speaking to her over zoom she was a very sweet lady. But when going into assignments it was not so sweet. She seemed to have blamed me a lot for the usage of Ai when it's just the fact that I know I sound simple when I talk. She will also not work with you to find a solution to a problem she just wants you to figure it out for her to decide.
Taking this class was stressful, every assignment she posted she had barley any instructions, she would give us a heads for buying books with our own money, and would have to find that out via email the same day. Her emails consist of 3 worded sentences, I do not recommend this teacher and I think she needs to not teach.
SHE IS THE WORST, SHE IS ALLWAYS FINDING SMALL LITTLE UNREASONABLE ISSUES THAT SOME WOULDNT EVEN CONSIDER ISSUES AND TAKING POINTS OF FOR IT. SHE DOESNT GIVE CLEAR INSTRUCTIONS.
Terrible class harsh grading. 0/100
