There is a lot of material in this course, the mutations can sometimes get mixed up in your head. The textbook was confusing, just show up to lectures, record them if possible, & study from slides & you'll be fine. She gives you a review sheet before each exam, & her exams are incredibly fair. Show up to lecture & you wont be surprise by the tests
She is excellent in clearly explaining the material
Absolutely Loved the class! Interesting and topics delivered by skilled Professor! I marked the easy A but that's if you come to class and study at home!!!
Do not take her if you actually have to learn the material. She's a PowerPoint teacher, all she does is ready from slides and use the word advantageous for everything.... I would not take her again, I would wait a whole semester until another professor taught this class, that's how bad she is. Homework doesn't reflect lectures at all. Stay away.
She says the test come from her PowerPoint, but that's what I studied and still failed the first test. She reads from herPowerPoints and gives clicker questions but they don't really help. PowerPoints don't prepare you for the exam, reading the book helped a little. I wouldn't take her again. She doesn't teach the material she just reads to you.
She is actually a good lecturer with very useful information. Her homework is relevant to the course and she gives a decent amount of extra credit. She is one of the most engaging professors I have had so far. I am planning on taking her for biol 1362.
Dr. Farmer is very nice and cares for her students. But she doesn't know how to teach the material. She's spends too much time on plant biology and not enough on other biological Science aspects. If you are a kinesiology, pharmacy, pre med, or biology technology major your not going to get much from this professor. She's not well rounded at all.
I took her over the summer and regret it. She's very nice and is willing to help. However she does a very poor job explaining details that are going to be on the test. Her tests are not what's on her PowerPoint or in the book. I don't think she knows how to explain her lectures into something relatable. She's not great at teaching this class.
I don't think she knows how to teach, she doesn't give clear examples and assigns a lot of homework. If you need to take this class and can't wait, then take her but if you can wait then wait. The bulk of grades are exams, and homework that's it you have clicker questions which don't really help. She confuses you every time she starts her lecture.
She's not a good professor. She lectures for over an hour and almost everyone is completely lost, everyone is looking around like 'so what are we suppose to do on the assignment' or asking around b/c we don't understand what she said. She doesn't know how to teach the material She thinks reading her PowerPoint is enough and it's not.
I took Professor Farmer during the Spring- clickers made attendance mandatory, 4 tests (none cumulative), 1 essay, & optional homework that not only helped a ton for the test but provided extra credit to your final grade average for the class. A couple of other extra credit opportunities were also available. I would take her again!
She will be there when you need help! I earned D on one of the exams and still managed to get an A-. All you have to do is read, study as soon as the exam reviews are up, and find someone to study with. If you can, attend recitation! If you are not willing to study or reach out for help, do not take this course. That's all Folks!
Summer course. Class is as easy or as hard as you make it. Farmer has a passion for her content and cares about you passing. Gives easy extra cred that can raise your final average a whole letter grade! As a graduate student I'd say this was a fair class and the professor stands out from others. Bad reviews must have wanted to be spoon fed.
This prof reads from the slides, yet your grade is dependent on participation and attendance. Hated attending her lectures because she has no original examples or analogies that are not in the book. When asked for more examples or someone asked a question that couldnt be answered in the book or slides she would act like you were stupid for asking.
Do you like having 4 chapter hw's due a week, each one with about 16 segments and each segment with 8-10 questions? Do you also like having 30 question "adaptive follow-ups" for every chapter? Do you like reading a textbook that doesn't give you all of the information for the homework? Do you want to jeopardize your GPA? If yes, take BIOL1361.
Take if you want a funny teacher. She's very passionate about biology and makes students laugh all the time. Just beware of lots of mastering biology but those really highlight the things you want to know for tests. Know that outside reading is a MUST, literally for any biology course. Take Farmer to get into bio
Ez class if you put the time and effort to read slides and teamwork exercises. Gives you a little something something at the end of semester to help boost your grade by a significant amount
She has been one of the best professor's I have ever had. I have always struggled with biology so I was nervous going into this class but if you attend class and actively listen, you will make an easy B, at least. She is very passionate about the subject and engages a lot with the students. You don't really need to read the book if you go to class.
Made biology fun. Lectures are funny, and she really tries to make everything more understandable by making it relatable. Super helpful, and tests are SUPER straight-forward. If you come to class and listen (taking notes is even better) you'll at least get a B. Only downside is the test reviews go up pretty late.
Dr. Farmer is awesome! I've always struggled with Biology, but Farmer's lectures are both engaging and full of clarity. She is very passionate about her subject matter, entertaining, and is very willing to help students if you put in the effort. Exam reviews are provided and tests are not too difficult. Will definitely be taking her for 1302.
Great professor, really cares about your success in this class. Gives reviews to study specific material & as long as you study that you will do well in the class. She lets you know specifics that will be on tests through clicker questions. Even better, she gives you a chance to earn 10 points back on your previous tests at the end of the semester.
I've never really liked Biology, however, Dr. Farmer made the class interesting enough for me. As long as you come to class and pay attention, and review the PowerPoints you should do great! Only 4 relatively easy tests, a couple of in-class minute papers(easy) and labs + Extra Credit.
Professor Farmer is cool, made Biology interesting to learn about and had a lot of pop reference jokes from today and yesterday that I found to be funny. The tests require the usual studying amount, but you can usually get by with the provided reviews.
Biology is a difficult class but it wont get easier than Prof. Farmer. She gives homework on Monday's and is always due the following Sunday night. She lectures heavy and makes jokes all the time. Her tests reflect all the material from her lectures and the book so reading is essential for success. She gives alot of EC at the end of the semester A+
Dr. Farmer was such an awesome professor. Her lectures were based on her very informative power points. There are a total of 4 tests which she provides a review for and as long as you study those reviews and her power points you'll do great on those tests.
She is an amazing teacher, and actually cares for her students
Dr. Farmer has been my favorite professor at University so far. Great lectures. She's funny and makes you WANT to go to class. Homework from the textbook can be done for extra credit. Clicker questions in class on random days. Listen to her lecture closely, she tests more on that than her power points.
Dr. Farmer is a great professor. She has excellent notes and thorough test reviews. There is online homework due once a week, but it is easy to complete. If you make less than a 90 on the homework, a short follow-up is due 2 days later, but it takes about 10 minutes to do. Overall, Dr. Farmer is one of my favorite professors.
Dr. Farmer is the best professor I've had here. She obviously cares a lot about biology, which makes her lectures so much fun. The grades come from 3 tests, extra credit homework online, extra credit clicker attendance questions, and a couple of "minute papers," where you have a few minutes to write a short paragraph on a topic.
Farmer is a good professor her reviews are helpful for exams, just make sure to review notes and study and you should be set. Her notes are pretty much the exam, the book was only helpful for the homework because she covers everything for the test with her notes. Kep
Farmer is my favorite professor, she is amazing and makes her lectures relatable and humorous. 4 Tests. Easy grade Teamwork Assignments Clicker Q's. Read over her Lecture notes and do the HW, all helpful for her tests. Sends out a review a few days before the exam. You'll pass easily w/ the notes and practice memorizing vocab. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Dr. Farmer is a very passionate professor. She genuinely cares for her students. She sets up exams in a way that is supposed to be easy for the students. Compared to other bio profs, Farmer is the easiest. After getting a C and 2 B's on the exams and a B on the final. I was able to end the class with an A- Dr. Farmer gave tons of extra credit!
Farmer is great. Her tests tend to be easier than other bio professors because they're to the point and truly reflect her lectures and reviews. She make everything easier for the student and even sets up times for people to go over their exams with her. Intro bio courses tend to give a lot of extra credit in general but she is by far the easiest.
LOVE DR FARMER she always motivated me to go to class with really funny lectures, she doesn't simply read off the powerpoints. Lot of extra credit. Tests are long (50 questions) but easy
She's your dream professor , I can promise you that
Pay attention in class!! The lectures are informative, the textbook helps a lot if you feel lost during and/or after lectures. Don't miss a class because it ends up being extra credit if you don't miss any class. Take clicker questions seriously, they're part of your grade. Do the extra credit whenever it's offered! About 5+ chapters on each test.
Had I put in a little more effort I would've gotten an A . Dr Farmer is really enthusiastic and loves plants. She grades attendance so show up. Tests based off of her slides, you can bomb the essay and still get a good grade.
The class was durable. The tests aren't hard if you study and understand the concepts. Mandatory mastering biology homework which are sometime long and tedious. There teamwork which are pretty easy most of the time.
Horrible jokes. Horrible. Every. Single. Class
Professor Farmer is not funny but Lord knows she tries her hardest to be and it's annoying. I cannot stand her class but you have to go because she takes attendance. Also she calls people out in the most obnoxious ways. She does give extra credit so I'll give her that, but she showed us a video of a goat dying once and it was super unnecessary.
Professor Farmer has been one of my favorite professors. She's funny, and since the class I took was for nonscience majors specifically, she was patient with us and made sure to go over most concepts a few times if need be. The tests were super easy, although you should probably study the powerpoints beforehand to be prepared.
Dr. Farmer is a very good professor but listening to her lecture is pointless. Reading the book and the slides will guarantee you an A+ in the class well thats what I did. She is well versed in the course and knows almost everything about biology. Makes it very known that she loves plants overall EASY A+
She's a real dime, her looks make the lectures worth it.
Professor is knowledgable on the subject but tests are extreeeeeeeemely hard and don't have a lot to do with what you're told to study. Tests have a lot more to do with critical thinking and heavy analysis than what we actually go over in class.
Farmer is a good lecturer and you can clearly tell that she cares for her students in class. To get an A in the class basically look over the powerpoint and understand the concepts by listening to her in class. Each test is always exactly over the content. The only annoying thing was the weekly homework's that are due at 9 PM Sunday.
Dr. Farmer is an AWESOME professor! A great sense of humor and she really knows how to bring life to her lectures! She's caring, and she's not like other professors, she's straight up and direct! (RESPECT!) She's very nice, just don't get on her bad side. She will prepare you well for the exams, just know HOW to STUDY. Also, she's very pretty!
Have to buy an access code. Do not buy the textbook. Lots of extra (clicker questions, "I Know It Know" questions.) Online homework is tedious but easy To succeed in this class, you have to read the power-points and be able to apply the material on the tests. Tests are not that difficult, however, the extra credit ensures that an "A" is possible
She is a wonderful professor who has the ability to put the information into layman's terms in order for us as students to understand. Her genuine personality adds spark and interest. The class itself is pretty tough, but with a good study regimen you can overcome. Her extra credit can increase your average by an entire letter grade.
Dr. Farmer is amazing. Classes are lecture heavy& are worth attending; she makes every lecture interesting& does helpful teamwork exercises& offers lots of extra credit through clicker points in class and "I-Know-It-Now" q's on the final that give you points back on your other exams. 3 tests & a final, textbook is also helpful though not essential.
Dr. Farmer gives tons of extra credit so make sure you show up to class and do the weekly homework. 4 tests are given including the final. Quizlet works WONDERS in this class, use it to study for tests especially. You do not need the textbook for this class, I did not open it once. You do need a clicker for attendance though.
Excellent.
Professor Farmer can be wacky, but that doesn't mean she's a bad professor. While you might see a meme here or there in her class, she tries to get you to learn the material in a concise manner.
Easy class for non science majors with tons of extra credit opportunities. The professor might get a little weird in her lectures but she is very nice and well respected. In-class tests with clicker points used as attendance.
Amazing professor. Knows how to explain the concepts in a way you would understand and is also funny. Tests are not too hard. Took Farmer for 1361 and 1362. Look over slides and the textbook also helps too. Lots of extra credit. Truly wants you to do well
Dr. Farmer is a great teacher. She gives great lectures and shes hilarious! I had her for both 1361 and 1362. She talks about plants a lot, so everyone in premed get mad but the plants are cool and theyre our basis of life. Mastering Biology is required and she assigns a lot of it. Mainly just have to study her lectures to do good on tests.
She makes Biology so fun by adding her jokes. I love her. Make sure to bring your clickers or else she won't count you in class. Her homework (Mastering Biology) is extra credit, do it and your grade will boost up. Her tests are easy as long as you study hard. She puts reviews which is awesome. Take her!
She does not try to trick you with her test questions. All of her tests reflect the lecture she has given. As long as you pay attention, go over the powerpoints and look at the reviews it will be fine. The only thing you ahve to watch out for is the homeoworks which are due 9 PM on Sunday not midnight.
Good professor, very knowledgable but can get off topic easily. Tests are the easiest of the three professors and helps your grade with I know it now questions. Read book if you want an A.
Very straightforward class, tests are based off PowerPoints alone. Be sure to actively complete the test reviews if you want to succeed. Be sure to come to class to get the extra credit from the clickers which really boost your grade at the end. Bonus questions + clicker questions no reason not to get an A
You really want to understand biology? TAKE HER!!! she gives amazing lectures, there is tutorials, and she is even willing to let you see and explain what you missed in your exam. she wants respect when she is given lecture. her lectures are in a form of a story so its easy to keep along. PRINT out the slides before coming to class, it helps alot!!
Farmer is extremely passionate about the material, and you'll see that in class. The material was hard, and her tests see if you understand the concepts. Overall, I feel like her class made me a better biologist, but you definitely have to work to get an A
Did fine but she was my least favorite professor. Said that she would put up exam reviews for test 3 and the final and ended up not putting up a review at all. so lazy and unfunny. gets mad when ppl walk in a minute late and then held us over by 5 mins or more every day. awful prof, easy class. come to class for random Extra credit. heavy curving.
She lectures well but it does not mean you will be tested on things mentioned during class. Basically her exam is from any where. I don't like her silly jokes during lectures. People say she's the best Biology professor in Biology department so I took her class. After all, I assume maybe there are no good Biology prof @ UH. Not very respectful
She is okay. Her lectures seem to be a fun but not so much helpful for exams. Just study your stuff no matter what. And make sure to study plants. She is a plant biologist.
I thought I was going to fail this class but I ended up with a B. Going to her office hours was the best thing I could have done. Dont just try to rely on her power-points, youre going to put in a lot of work outside of class. I will be taking her again! I prefer her over any of the other professors.
Her class wasnt that bad, she has a lot of extra credit, the test was the review, but she is really annoying. She makes me roll my eyes AT LEAST three times per class, and she has an attitude that her class is so much more important than it is. You might like her I guess, if you like that professor who constantly tries to be cool.
Lisa Farmer is a pretty OK professor. The only thing I didn't like about her was that she was unnecessarily strict about phones. She also talks to her students in a sarcastic way, but most people know not to take it personally. Homework and clicker questions are extra credit.
Participation required, she won't hesitate to dock points if you miss 3+ classes. You have to take a preliminary test in CASA before the first week of school is over so if you pass that, recitation (tutoring) isn't mandatory, fail it and it is mandatory. Biology is a tough subject anyway, but she's good at what she does. Textbook + online quizzes.
Farmer was a great professor who is very passionate about her job. She made biology more interesting.
Fantastic professor who provides reviews for every test and enough extra credit to raise your B- to a solid A. Her tests are multiple choice and consist of 95% of what was on the review. She was very passionate and funny, and helped me receive an A in a class I was otherwise disinterested in.
Easy class with a lot of extra credit offered. Showing up to class accounts for 30% percent of grade (attendance and teamwork exercises). Rest of grade is tests and they're easy, just go over slides and review sheet she gives out. Homework is optional but can earn up to 4% extra credit. She'll call you out for being on phone in front of class
I took her expecting that I was gonna die because Im a non-science major. Truth is that if you put your best effort, youll make it. She gives lots of extra credits opportunities and her tests are based off her slides. Always go to lecture!
Bless her and her extra credit. Honestly the class was pretty straightforward. I managed to make an A just studying the PPTs and skimming the book. She's also funny and entertaining for lectures. She does call people out with phones, but honestly it's not hard to go an hour and a half without texting... Only thing I didn't like was the amount of HW
Amazing extra credit! changed my grade from a B- to an A! Go to class for the clicker questions! She gives you points for those at the end of the semester. Also the i know it now questions on the final let you gain points back on previous tests!! The homeworks are on quizlet as well. It is possible to end with an A, but you have to try.
Pretty much a self-teach class, going to class is pretty much for the clicker points (THAT WILL HELP YOU SOOO MUCH due to UH's +/- system!) All her extra credit raised my grade from a B+ to an A! Definetly would take her again, only because the layout is easier in comparision to other teachers. Her teaching style was OK at times. Bless her EC tho!
She is awesome! Everyone should take her. Dr. Farmer knows what she is teaching and will break it down as much to make her students understand
Prof Farmer is hands down the best professor to take for biology at UH!
HW is extra credit (optional), 3 points extra added onto final grade. Do it bc that's a whole letter grade. 4 exams, in-class, and roughly 50 Qs. Farmer is funny, caring, and super accessible out of class. Attendance is mandatory (EC) & she does require clickers (can miss at least 3 days). Textbook/powerpoints will be your BFF. Overall, great prof.
Dr. Farmer is an inspiration to the class. She's super accessible out of office hours. Sure, she's a bit blunt but the class is definitely worth taking with her. It's tons of readings (4-6 chapters per exam). Attendance (mandatory but can miss 3x) HW is extra credit (optional). 4 exams, 50-55 Q. Few (1-3) teamwork assignments (in class). BEST PROF
Awesome teacher she really loves the subject she teaches. Offers so many extra credit opportunities. FYI do the extra credit homework she adds whole points to your overall grade.
Professor Farmer was a great professor and I am definitely trying to take her again for General Biology 1 next semester! There is a weekly homework due but other than that you have to do most of the studying on your own. Keep up with what she teaches in class and it won't be so tough when it comes down to test time! Definitely recommend taking her!
Her lectures are really good! Tests are 50 questions each. I would advise you to study a decent amount for the tests and you'll be fine. The tests were pretty straightforward, but will prepare you for genetics class really well! Team test is a 100 if you show up.
Dr. Farmer is an amazing professor ! Her lectures are engaging and very informative. Her tests are 50 questions but she gives you a good test review. Do the work and put in the time and you'll pass. I highly recommend taking her over the other biology professors !
Literally, all you have to do is come to class prepared with your clicker and notes, study the review that she posts on Blackboard that gives you key info on what to study. Come to class every day for the most possible clicker and teamwork points. Do homework in advanced and that's pretty much it.
She gives extra credit for homework and accuracy on clickers. Her lectures can get boring and she can be bratty, but she does make class fun.
DO NOT TAKE HER FOR CELL BIO. Honestly, you are better off taking Rea or just anyone else frankly. She will give you false hope by saying things like "Oh, dont worry! I won't grade things off the scale listed in the syllabus" and "An A last year was an 84 guys, don't worry!".. only to give grades based exactly off the syllabus scale. 91.5 was an A
She has definitely made the cell bio class grading scale wayyy higher.. My friends who took her in the past got a higher letter grade than me even though my grade was higher than theirs.
Thanks for tanking my GPA Farmer. If she at least gave a clear grading criteria, I would have dropped the class and went about my way to take a more reasonable professor. Nothing wrong in having hard exams, why not just be a bit more straightforward about the grading criteria instead of beating around the bush? Why give false hope like 86 A?
Exams test on THE MOST obscure details from her lectures and have passage based questions that have zero relevance to what was taught in class. Gave everyone false hope by saying an 84 is A and then bumps it up out of no where to a 91 when grades are due. For the sake of your GPA take Rea. With Rea atleast you know what to expect.
She's not helpful during office hours and complains when the tests are impossible and everyone does bad. She's not honest about her grading criteria, is disorganized cause of her million other commitments and calls people out for no reason. Her lectures are a mess too.
GO TO CLASS! I regret not going and its the reason I ended up with a grade I wished I didnt earn.
I never write RMP reviews, but this one just had to be done. The class itself is difficult, as expected. Her tests were not overly difficult if you put a little bit of effort. BUT SHE DOESNT HAVE A CLEAR CRITERIA FOR HER GRADING. Told the class to "not worry, an A will be roughly around an 85". An A was a 91.5. DONT GIVE FALSE HOPE, WOULDVE DROPPED
She's hilarious but pay attention in class; she'll call you out if she catches you. The Biology department itself offers some extra credit, so it's not just her. She doesn't allow you to bring home old tests, just review them in front of her. She also doesn't want you to take pictures of her clickers questions. I found those two things to dumb..
Cell Biology is a tough class. Exams tested critical thinking instead of rote memorization, but there were some freebies on exams. Luckily, exams didn't make up the entire grade for the course, so there's some margin for error. Lectures were all thorough yet to the point. Don't let yourself cram for this class. Also, Farmer is a nice professor.
Most biological cells require aquaporin proteins for diffusion therefore water can only cross the membrane via facilitated diffusion not passive.
As a person who has no interest in biology at all (transfer bauer student), this class was one of the more useless classes I have taken. Professor Farmer was alright, she was a good teacher but she threw a tantrum when things didn't go her way. She also has a very "Type A" personality and is not that easy going, especially during finals time.
No grade is curved. What you get for each test is straight up. Extra credit is given, don't be lazy thats what kills. Study on your own, class is pointless but mandatory so focus on LO. First test covered 7 chs, Second test 9 chs, third was 8 chs. Fried my brain. Good luck fellow coogs who end up taking her. Material is easy to forget, study daily.
Dr. Farmer is fantastic+brilliant. She hold great lectures and is witty+sarcastic. If you are someone who will slack off and be on your phone the whole lecture, she will definitely call you out on it.I found this course easy, however not many did. What is great about her tests is that she makes sure everything included in them were covered in class
Dr. Farmer is amazing! She is really funny and her lectures are very informative. Get ready to read the textbook as she assigns quizzes before each lecture and homework assignments at the end of each week. She adjusts the grading scale of each test and provides multiple extra credit opportunities at the end of the semester. 10/10!
This class was fantastic. She breaks things down so you can really understand them. Uses animated videos to help us remember. The only down-side is she will not bump your grade if you're on the cusp. I ended with an 89.4 but I also respect the fact that she does not give you a grade you did not deserve.
Very conflicted about my opinions regarding this class. I didn't do that well but I think if you put in some work you should do fine. At the end of the semester she gives a lot of extra credit, but make sure you attend class because you get whole points added to your grade for showing up.
If you actually want to learn, take her. She doesnt read off the slides and actually tries to explain everything. We even did team exercises to understand harder material better
Her lectures are fun and she is quite funny. 3 Tests and a Final (optional due to COVID-19) and mastering biology homework every week. She does 2-3 group activities which aren't difficult and might count towards extra credit. Clicker questions for attendance!!
Dr Farmer is one of the best professors I have taken. She gives plenty of opportunity for bonus points and makes her lectures fun. Definitely study the lectures, she posts them on bb, and the masteringbio hw questions, her exams are based off of them. I would recommend attending recitation even if it's not required, it really helps! 10/10
TAKE HER FOR BIO! Best professor at UH for Intro Bio! Her lectures are really entertaining and will not make you go to sleep, super funny and genuinely wants you to learn the material. Make sure you go to class because attendance will help at the end for EC. Exams are simple if you study her powerpoints.
Dr. Farmer was one of the best professors I had this semester! Her lectures are semi-entertaining and easy to follow and understand. Her tests consisted of 50 multiple choice questions straight from lecture, homework, and teamwork exercises. During the pandemic, she was extremely organized and made sure we were still learning. Highly recommend!
She is the best professor I have ever had. I enjoyed going to her class since she's very funny and makes class quite enjoyable. She cares about her students and that is shown in the way she teaches. She holds teamwork assignments, which are extremely helpful and come in handy for exams. Her slides are a great tool to study for her exams.
Dr. Farmer is quiet honestly one of the best professors I've had at UH. She's very knowledgeable about material and all her test come from the lecture. Although memorization is not enough you actually have to know and understand the material. During PowerPoint lags she'll take time to discuss admissions for after undergrad! Overall A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!!!
Study for the class with resources and show up to lecture! She can be pretty funny during lecture and at office hours. She'll be blunt sometimes about life and also about prehealth professional schools (dental, med, etc). Overall, pretty down to earth for the most part. I plan to take her for biol1361 (yes I went out of order) and genetics!
Dr. Farmer is a great professor! I made a B and, considering the fact that the class was online during COVID, I wasn't too upset about it! Stay caught up on the lectures and do the homework! I learned more from this class than any previous Biology course I have taken. As long as you really put in the work, it should be fairly difficult to fail.
I was in the ER and asked to make up an assignment. Instead, she completely excused it for me and allowed me to work on it for practice on my own time. She's great at communicating and very compassionate. IMO HW is a little ridiculous but it's good practice. Lectures are pretty decent. Also great personality. Read the book or you won't pass.
Hypocrite. Complains when we make mistakes but she makes just as many. Protects her material like no other even though her LCQs are straight off quizlet. When she releases assignments for review, she doesnt show the answers, just whether you got it right or wrong. She would rather us fail than to have her material leaked. Annoying, condescending
Isn't considerate of your time(even when we have a test she'll still assign a lot of work, which is also on the test). Never gives answers to past assignments to help study for tests(will only say if you're right or wrong). Very immature and will throw shade in class. Very rude and will snap at you w/o reason, unhelpful, no extra credit/curves.
She is very passionate about plant physiology, very perky and cracks lots of jokes. Super clear grading criteria. Don't try to turn anything in late, just DO THEM ON TIME. She's very strict on deadlines and rules. Just do as she says and you'll be fine. Exams are pretty difficult, you definitely need to put in the work. This isn't a blow off class!
She's a great professor, the class is so straightforward. They are the same assignments and quizzes every week so you build a sturdy routine. She isn't intimidating. Lastly, her tests are completely lecture-based so all you need to do is study what she says and print her powerpoints.
Does not respect her students. She calls her students out just for asking simple questions. Many lectures unnecessarily have too much information regarding plants. She does not really teach, she just reads from the slides. Terrible at responding to emails. Does not open assignments up even to study for tests and does not tell the incorrect answers.
I took this class online due to Covid-19. Dr. Farmer is not the best professor in the dept. Every friday you've a quiz over the lec/s, exams are on LockDown Browser, min. papers, HW on Pearson, Teamwork activity, recitations don't help, TAs are rude. Doesn't reply to any emails, her attitude is sky high, avoid taking her if you've other options.
I took Professor Farmer for 1361 Biology in fall 2020 online. Professor Farmer prerecorded her lectures and met with us every other week for teamwork assignments. Overall the class was doable not too much of a load and professor Farmer is very likable, probably the best biology professor at UH. I definitely recommend her for 1361 biology.
Too much work for this class, 5 hour long homework, quizzes every Friday which do impact your grade, required hour long useless recitation, group work that no one does anything (just wastes your time), and gives you a midterm during finals week, you study the hardest for this class neglecting other classes. Relax we are not all trying be doctors.
Genetics is a medium difficult class. A lot of busy work, smartbooks, and hw on top of long lecture vids and 40-50 Q tests (all mc). She gave a lot of extra credit at the end that really brought up grades. Focus on her lectures for the tests, all her questions come straight from her slides. Take notes and don't skip watching her lectures!
she's fairly easy in terms of uh science. kinda hypocritical and can get annoyed w her students. her tests are the easiest out of the biology 1 profs.
If you wanna know the info and be a good biologist take her. May not get the grade you want, but I was better off in my other classes because of this course. She is passionate about her lecture and as long as you study what she is passionate about you will do fine on exams. Homeworks were incredibly long, felt that learnsmarts were enough.
do not ever email her, you will be snapped at
Dr. Farmer is a great choice for Cell Bio. However, her tone does come off as a bit dismissive at times. I took her class during the pandemic and her lectures were pretty straightforward. For tests, however, look in the textbook for a deeper understanding of the material. This class is beneficial for the MCAT!
She is rude and disrespectful. She doesn't respond to emails. she is uncaring to students' extenuating circumstances. I'll admit that she does have clear grading criteria and does offer extra credit. Only take her if you REALLY have your life put together. I don't know if she'll be the same in person. HW's due Sunday, Quizzes due Fridays.
She's a very passionate professor and is willing to give her students the help she needs. She does not like receiving email spam, so only email her for emergencies. Besides that, tests are note heavy and not too bad. Just stay on top of your work and you'll be fine.
Straightforward class and her quizzes & exams basically reflect everything taught. Seems passionate about teaching too. Doesn't like to be emailed though and can be unforgiving when it comes to emergencies. Gives TONS of extra credit at least I struggled a lot in BIOL1361 with a different prof so I recommend her if you want to do well in bio
This is the second time Ive taken Dr. Farmer and I love her! She makes cell bio really approachable and genuinely wants you to learn the material. There are a lot of assignments but it helps to give you some cushion for your overall grade. Tests a curved and she usually offer extra credit.
This class requires you to: attend lectures, attend group activities, complete homework and quizzes on time, and read the textbook. Professor Farmer's lectures are very interesting and fun. Homework and quizzes are moderately hard but when coupled with her lectures teaches you everything for the exams. Memorize the materials and you'll ace it.
Professor Farmer was always very enthusiastic and ready for us to learn. The group work and extra credit assignments were always very interesting. Also, the learning objectives she provides in preparation for exams are very helpful. Homework and learnsmarts were a lot at times, making this class a little bit time consuming.
she's a nice person but an awful professor. The homeworks are too long, She also takes days to answer emails and She might not even email back to answer your question. she's too strict about attendance and if you're a few seconds late, you'll get a zero for attendance and assignment. She won't excuse you even if you have an emergency and proof.
Took online class, she is actually really good at what she does gives real life examples. She explains the lectures really well. We had online book readings that were graded, but super easy. The tests you do have to study for, but she gave 3 chances to get a good grade on tests (the questions change for each test but are similar).
I really wanted to like her. I enjoyed her lecture / teaching style. However she has the WORST attitude I have ever come across. It's childish/petty. She doesn't want to be bothered via email and if she'll jump at any opportunity to "catch" you slipping if SHE feels you're not putting in effort. Not understanding, her attitude is sky-high.
I took Dr. Farmer over summer 2021 for BIOL 1362 because she was the only option. The class is very lecture-heavy. She says to read the textbook but you don't really need it, apart from the MasteringBio HWs. I would do MB HW first, then take LCQs. Study LCQs for the test. You have to put in the work, but it pays off.
Great professor
Dr. Farmer is probably one of the most intelligent people I've met. She is so knowledgeable about every course she teaches and gives specific real-life examples and personal experiences to exaggerate her lectures. She is also so fun to talk to and get to know, and HUMBLE! I took her for genetics, currently plant phys, and cell bio next semester.
Dr. Farmer's lectures are quite long and dense, she assigns a lot of hw and the class has at least one team assignment every week. Everything we do for this class is packed with information that can be studied for the exam. Her exams are difficult but doable if one studies well. Her grading scale is reasonable. You can tell she loves teaching bio.
Honestly Dr. Farmer is average. She isn't the worst but she isn't the best either. She gets off topic a lot and tries hard to be funny, which is nice but sometimes it's excessive. Also, she either speeds through some slides or drags other slides far too long during lectures, there's rarely an in between. Her exams are easy and straight forward tho
Her plant class is very informative but she does talk off topic and be funny to make the class entertaining. Her lectures are good and slides can be time consuming. HW are very easy just 5 however her exams can be tricky. A lot of the class was kinda struggling with this class. She is a good professor but just really pay attention
Dont listen to the bad comments. Dr. Farmer IS THE BEST PROFESSOR one can have. She is super passionate and you do have to work in this class (welcome to college). Yes, I admit that even studying hard for the tests I only make about B average. BUT SHE PROVIDES EC and chance to redo missed ?s and get points back on final. I WENT FROM B- to A+!!
worst prof ever
Compared to chem, this class is a BREEZE. Her tests actually relate to her lectures, she gives plenty of bonus credit ONLY IF YOU STUDY FOR IT! My grade went from a B- to an A+. She has a huge number of students, so don't expect an answer to emails. However, if you do your work, you will never have to email her.
Her exams are written to confuse and deceive you. There is always an answer choice that say "ALL OF THE ABOVE" in every question. She takes pride in tricking students to choose that option. There is team exam where you are paired with other students, but BEWARE; there are more stupid students that will bring your grade down than there are smart one
I love Lisa Farmer. That's all.
It is obvious she cares about what she teaches and is very good at making difficult material easier to understand, but she comes across more like a high school teacher than a college professor with the way she handles her students.
best biology professor at UH. take her cause you will enjoy her class.
Dr. Farmer has completely ruined biology for me. As someone who studied for hours on end for her exams, I did poorly on most of them. People say that her exams relate to her lecture content, but to be honest you have to really study every single thing she talks about to do well. She's rude to her students and enjoys seeing them do poorly.
I was in a car accident and she didn't care about the assignment that I couldn't make up. Said that the class was designed so that you would "survive." Lecture slides are okay but often wordy. Tests are based mainly on the lectures. Her attitude is abysmal considering emergencies and such. Does not answer emails.
Dr. Farmer is a great lecturer. Her class was easy to understand. All the power points are posted on Blackboard. Going to lectures helps a lot, even though I fell asleep 60% of the time lol. She is funny and likes to keep the class engaged. Cool beans
Exams are easy and lecture based. She's the type of professor that tells jokes and random stories in the middle of lecture, and I know some people don't love that so I thought I'd mention it. She assigns a LOT of homework and she's pretty strict on attendance. Also, isn't really willing to work with students during emergencies.
As someone who has taken both Cheek and Farmer, Farmer is 1000 times better than Cheek. No need to read the textbook for this class. Her tests are all from lectures, so just show up, take notes, and you'll be set for this class. Her lectures can be a bit boring though, but overall, great professor.
I can tell that Dr. Farmer is very passionate about teaching. Her style just did not resonate with me. I felt the stories where excessive. Exams are relatively easy, study the lectures and try your best to focus in class. Lots of extra credit at the end. There is a lot of homework and assignments, but I think thats how all the other classes go.
I was excited about Dr. Farmer going into her class, but I lost all respect for her by the end of the semester. She is rude, unforgiving, and NOT understanding whatsoever, even if you have a valid excuse. Don't listen to the good reviews like I did. Some students love her, others hate her - she really is hit or miss.
Tests are managable and directly tied to the powerpoints.she is great a lecturing and provides ec if you show up. class is set up so tests are not weighted so heavy. definitely good to take her. she can be sweet and sour- just dont take it personally and make sure you are not late or disruptive.
Dr. Farmer is a really good professor! Her exams are lecture based so make sure to go to class and pay extra attention because it will be all on the exam. Studying her lecture slides will be great for the exam. Biology is not an easy subject so you will HAVE TO put your own part as well.
If you attend the lectures and complete all the homework assignments, it is very easy to get a high grade. Exams are based on lectures, which are engaging. Attendance is accounted for through "quiz" questions. Homework is given every week (can be time consuming). Provides review sheets for exams. Extremely generous extra credit opportunities.
Firstly, I am not a Biology major. I took this class for my CORE credit (worst mistake I've made in college). I agree with the mixed reviews here. She's really a hit or miss. You may end up loving her or hating her. She has a bit of an attitude, but the course is structured decently. Lots of EC throughout the year. Without it, I would have failed.
I think Dr. Farmer is a great professor, and her lectures really cover all you need to know for the test. However, she does have an attitude, but if you do all your work ut should not be a problem. Strict on due dates, but has clear grading criteria. Lots of extra credit, so even if you don't put any effort you can still easily pass.
She is a very funny professor. As of right now, her curriculum includes: worksheets in class (used as attendance), you have to watch her lectures outside of class, 2 exams, 1 noncumulative final, and a fun and easy art project. She makes the class very fun and an A is definitely achievable! She is for sure more lenient and laidback for this class.
Overall, Dr. Farmer is an amazing genetics teacher. Recorded lectures and does reverse lectures so you learn before coming to class and questions in class. It is difficult at first but it was definitely worth watching the lectures. One thing is she has group exams, terrible experiences, which would be the only major complaint about Dr. Farmer.
Prof. Farmer is an AMAZING biology teacher! She really cares about her students, and genuinely want's them to succeed. The class itself can be hard or boring, but she has SO many extra credit opportunities and she's pretty funny. Also, she really cares about attendance, and I'm pretty sure next semester she's making them mandatory.
i think she's really funny and i'm going to be honest i almost fell asleep through most of her lectures but they're overall pretty good on conveying the information you need. i also think the ALAs that she gives are very helpful.
Farmer is hilarious, a bit scary, but sweet. Interesting lectures and the tests are straightforward. She gives excessive hw though. Got an A on all of my midterms and final, yet I got a C in the class because of hw. With smartbooks and hw combined, you'll be doing about 100 practice problems, sometimes 200, with multiple parts, each week.
She expects you to come to class knowing what is going on by having homework due before class. She doesn't read her slides and talks very fast in class making note-taking very difficult. It is really easy to get behind and hard to catch up because there's so much information she packs into her slides and lectures.
Very lovely professor and found her to be very approachable. Homework load is very heavy, but tests were easy as long as you do the test extra credit and go over her lecture slides. Attendance isn't mandatory, but sometimes she will give extra credit when attendance is low. I really enjoyed Dr. Farmer and she made biology a lot more tolerable.
FARMER IS THE GOAT! I took Bio 2 over the summer and it was really tough. 16 weeks worth of work put into 4 weeks. She gave extra credit like crazy and was the coolest professor ever. Attendance matters! Course load was insane bc it was the summer session but she made it worth it and gives so much extra credit. I am so thankful for her!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If you like a class with a traditional teaching style-meaning that you prefer coming into class prepared to take notes-then Genetics with Dr. Farmer is not for you. All lectures were posted weekly onto canvas because this class is a flipped classroom To do well you must read the textbook, watch lectures and keep up with copious amounts of homework.
She was a good freshman prof, but she's not a junior prof. will stop mid lecture to call out someone wearing headphones every single time (we legit have more important things to discuss). always complains about not being on track, but also will cancel class at her own convenience. will not give extensions, but will take forever to change a grade.
Do NOT take her, save your money and time.
Do NOT take her save your money and time.
I want to like Professor Farmer, but she is just too unorganized for her own good. She waits until the LAST day to to put grades in and emails you if there is a problem. If you don't respond to the email in time (for me that was a 5 hour margin), you are out of luck. A whole letter grade, gone. I don't recommend her.
Dr. Farmer is a good lecturer for 80% of that time until she gets distracted by someone wearing AirPods or someone leaving. The tests are okay if you take notes in class. Her organization sucks; grades were not clear and even her slides feel kind of jumbled. Her class was a lot of (home)work for what it was worth but a good grade is very possible.
insensitive and talks a lot. very rude through email.
honestly, I wouldn't recommend taking her. She might be ok for lower-level classes but not for difficult classes like genetics. it's weird how she cancels class at her convenience but we lose our grades when we don't attend because attendance matters. found the tests to be difficult. she sad there would be lots of extra credit but I don't think so.
great
She has a nice personality and likes to be connected to her students which is good, especially for an entry-level class. She talks pretty fast through the lecture but she conveys the information in an entertaining way rather than just reading slides. Exams are based 100% on the material from the slides, study those and an A is very easy to attain.
Just watch go through the lecture slides before tests and you'll be fine. After taking Cheek for 1306 i couldn't be more happy switching to Farmer for 1307.
I love Dr. Farmer she is truly passionate about what she does and cares for her students, she is hilarious and will help you excel all throughout college. This is a flipped class (lectures at home, learning activities in class). 8 points of extra credit on each exam (3 midterms, one final). Homework is due on Sunday at 9 pm (at most 4 hws).
This is a flipped classroom so you have to watch videos on your own time and take notes before class. A good chunk of this class is graded on attendance so if you skip a lot it will hurt your grade. However, if you just show up and do the ALAs (completion grade) then it is a good buffer if you keep bombing exams. Dr. Farmer is cool and funny tho.
I love Dr. Farmer for her personality. She was a great professor. This is my first bio class for a while and to be honest the flip class method does not fit me. I guess that is just my problem. If you love her personality and her way of teaching you will be just fine.
Professor Farmer was great! I recommend her! She had it to where she would post lectures online for us to watch before class and do an assignment in class with our groups. I personally loved watching the lectures before class due to me having time to watch them and also going at my own pace with notes. I wish I had taken her for BIO 1 instead!
The class was in a "flipped" style so you watch the lectures at home and come to class and did an activity based off of the lecture. That method doesn't really work for me but I was still able to pass the class easily with some extra studying. I would recommend that you take her, I'd definitely take her again.
Rude and selective of students. Has favorites and talks bad abt rate my prof bc she gets honest reviews she can't handle. Emails are very witty and don't represent proper student to teacher relationships (very rude even when asking simple questions ). Attendance is mandatory for everyone except her.
Attendance is big for this professor!! Miss one lecture and it'll drop a letter grade. Her lectures are flipped therefore you watch the lecture online and do group activities in class. Didn't help much of us learn at all and was sometimes rude.
Talk too much and gives too much homework and her exams are hard.
Terrible!!!
A waste of money and time. She thinks she is cool but she is not. Talks too much during lectures and her class is super boring. Very rude in her emails. Avoid her.
Most negative reviews are written by students who have never taken a STEM course before. She is a very thorough professor and her tests are based 100% on lecture. You do not need to read the textbook; it is there to supplement your knowledge. She does not "talk a lot" that is just in fact.. her job? class is very engaging if you know the material.
One of the worst professors I have ever had.
Not a bad professor, tests are based off of lecture slides entirely so if you use the learning objectives as a study guide you will do great. No need to read textbook since it goes into too much depth with topics that will not be covered in an intro bio course. She has a genuine interest in genetics and knows what she is talking about.
I learned so much in her class! Shes an amazing professor. I would have taken her for genetics but she only does MWF sadly.
Ton of homework for only 10% of the overall grade lol
tons of homework that really don't help much unless you read the textbook, however she is very knowledgable about the topics. her tests in my opinion were not straight forward as you would expect in a intro to bio course. a lot of them are from the slides she has however they are not simple, but more so applicable. she's pretty funny
Courses are "flipped" so you watch lecture videos at home and do group assignments in class. The videos are clear, with thorough explanations and helpful metaphors (kind of dumbs it down for you, which is nice). Exams are based on the videos and groups change after each exam. Attendance is graded(clicker points). Overall it was a pretty good class.
You watch her recorded lectures prior to class and then do group activities in class. Generally these activities are easy enough and helpful if you put in an honest attempt. Her tests are very conceptual and a little hard but plenty of extra credit opportunities are available. Attendance is mandatory and graded with clicker questions.
This professor is very bad. Don't waste money choose cheek instead.
Dr. Farmer is very intelligent and understanding. She truly wants you to do good in her class and provides extra credit on exams. Her lectures are very engaging and she's very funny and friendly. The exams are based on the lectures, learning objectives, and ALAs (in class assignments) which provides more than enough material to feel prepared.
Good professor, cares about her students, comes in with a smile and makes people laugh, brings great energy every day, at the end of the day that is all I can really ask of a human. Gives a bunch of extra credit for tests, and has pre-recorded lectures that are very easy to understand and follow, already enrolled her for next sem,
This class was ridiculous. We had to watch pre recorded lectures and then spend our entire class periods doing assignments on them. This may help some lazy people get off their butts and stay on track, but I just saw it as a massive waste of time. Why not just teach during the class period like a normal professor would? Cheek is way better
The lectures were online where you needed to watch the video before coming to class; group activities during class time; the professor and assistants weren't all too helpful but you can look up the answers; sometimes homework heavy, technically smartbooks; she's nice but doesn't reply to emails that much, do the learning objectives for exams
Dr. Farmer was amazing! Her classes require a lot of effort, but you actually end up learning the material rather than just memorizing. She has a flipped classroom, which really helped me take the time to take good notes. In class, you work with groups and it helps give extra practice to really learn the material. I will be taking her again!!
Shes cool, but not understanding at all. This class was online over the summer and her class has attendance as a big part of the grade and she is not accepting any reasons for not showing up. She has marked people absent when roads were flooded, power outages, car crashes, etc.and is unwillingly to excuse anyone even with proof.
She KNOWS her material, she does get side tracked so use her lectures as a guide in what to read (I know more work, it's like you signed up for it or something). Stay ahead of the material---her test aren't hard per se but they do make you think, it's an upper class and she is challenging you because your next classes are harder(Biochem/Cell-bio).
If you like to study by yourself and read the textbook, then take her. I prefer Professor teaching, not like just watched the lecture video at home before class, then doing team work at class. It didn't help at all. TA doesn't help either, asking questions during class, then she asked us back, never got to know the answers.
Flipped Classroom: you watch 2 hours of long rambling lecture videos BEFORE class then work with your moronic teammates on a pointless "active-learning assignment" AKA class work. Hard to figure out what to study for exams but I just grind that txtbook and turned out okay.
If you can't guarantee that you will attend every class, don't take this professor. Scored high on all my exams, submitted all the hw and extra credit on time, but because I missed 4 classes, I got a B. Other than that, her class is okay. Online lecture before class, then in-class group assignment, followed by weekly hw and proctored exams.
The class is flipped, you would watch the lectures at home and do review activities in class. Attendance is mandatory and there is a seating chart for us to work in groups of 3 that changes after every exam. There was 1-2 homework assignments due every week and she offered us a lot of extra credit opportunities, so it was easy to keep my grade up.
Her class was relatively easy, but attendance matters way too much. I had an average of 90 on each exam and did all the homework, but attendance mattered way too much. As a commuter, I would show up to class late and not get counted for attendance, so it tanked my grade to a B. If you cannot guarantee you'll show up to class, pick someone else.
Actual horrendous professor, has a disgusting condensing attitude. Obnoxious to talk to. Exams don't make sense. Every time I slept I was dreaming I jumped off a cliff because of this class.
I mean she's an alright professor, very strict with showing on time and NOT missing her class. Poor girl sitting next to me was getting yelled at by Prof. for asking to leave early to go take a test. I think the only thing good about Dr. Farmer is that she knows what she's teaching. And gives easy extra credit for test.
berated me in front of 200+ people for needing to leave 10 mins early for a test. first accusing me of not working with my group, then of rushing them since im nonchallant final boss, figured had a speech ready that could rival erwin's last speech, but she just chatted with someone for 20 mins while I sat in silence, then sped to SL campus crying
Her teaching style is that you teach yourself EVERYTHING before class, then come to class and take a quiz with 2 other students and if you have questions you can ask. She doesn't actually teach anything to you so unless you enjoy teaching yourself an entire class material.... As a person she is very funny and great at explaining things!!
Dr. Farmer is good if you're not dumb... If you are actually willing to work for your grade, she is perfect for 1306, especially since it can be a lot of information, and she simplifies it well. Took her again for 1307, and still a lot of work but you will learn easily with her because she makes it very interesting, GRADE FULLY DEPENDS ON YOU
INCREDIBELY rude. Only stayed w her for 2 semesters because her tests are easy. Attendance worth wayyyy too much, if youre a commuter dont take her. An extremist to say the least. Rude in emails, had a problem and was not understanding at all. please listen to me, STAY AWAY. takes INTRO bio wayyy too seriously
Her flipped class set up is terrible; she doesn't answer emails, and it's a lot of self-teaching. The ALA does not help, mostly because she stops grading them past the first week. Her character is polarizing; she doesn't respect her students, and reminds me of a mean girl who got bullied before and continues to do it to her students.
HYPOCRITE! She RARELY pardon people for missing class (even if there's a legitimately good reason; a doctor's note is not good enough: you need their signature and identification number and their mother's maiden name), but she expects her students to be okay with her cancelling class. She wants to bully her students so bad. Just terrible 0/10.
When I first enrolled in the class, this was my last option for the professor. So I closed my eyes and took the class. WHAT A RELIEF! To me, she is one of the best professors in all of UH I've taken so far, up there with Dr. Wayne. I found her teaching style highly effective, as it kept students on their toes and made them focus.
Attendance counts for 35% of your grade, which imo is way too much. If she cancels classes, your few absences can hurt you alot. My exam totals are at 99%, yet TWO absences tanked my grade to an A minus. Her recorded lectures are pretty good, tho. The prof can also get ticked off pretty easily, but she's usually chill.
Smartbooks & McGraw Hill are easy. My exams were 95+ because of the extra credit (videos + a few questions). I took notes on her slides and studied the learning objective. It's a flipped course, so lectures are videos to be watched outside of class time and class time is for the ALAs (Active Learning Activities) which are done in assigned groups.
If you have no problem attending every class you'll be fine, but every class you skip is roughly 1.8 percent off your entire grade I ended with a 99 she gives 8 points extra credit every test if you just study the slides and Ala's you'll do really well, she can be a little rude
Dr. Farmer is a great professor if you're looking for someone that actually cares about you as a student. Her lectures are recorded and very in depth, which really gets the point across. She goes above and beyond to not only relay the information but also make it relevant to day to day life processes. Her active learnings are also very helpful.
She's engaging and covers the content in an intuitive manner. I will never understand for the life of me how someone could get below a B in her class unless ur clueless. ALAs are tough, but its pretty much a participation grade, and tests are multitudes easier. My only gripe is that I think it's a little ridiculous not to drop a single attendance.
