Good Proff, easy tests
Best prof to teach Introduction to Research methods
started off easy... but then turned around and made the 2nd test much harder -- still the best teacher to teach research methods
Definitely the best teacher to have for research methods. Her lectures are very well organized & everything's on overhead long enough for you to copy it down. Tests are easy if you study. She's also extremely helpful & will answer any questions.
she is extremely patient and helpful. her lectures are clear and well organized. would highly recomend.
I agree with everybody else here. She's extremely helpful, and treats the students with great respect. You'd think we were the profs and she were the student! Good course.
EASY A. Nice Prof. Boring Lectures.
Doesn't really know anything beyond her notes, but that is the only thing she tests on so it doesn't really matter. Her tests are really easy but lectures are soooo boring! But definitely a good choice for research methods.
Prof is very knowledgeable of research methods, and willing to go over material. Lectures are really informative, but topic is dry and boring. Uses Powerpoint so there's not guessing what's important – slides are a bit too detailed. Exams are really easy,
she was a great prof but u must study and she has a fair assignment that could boost up your mark :) over all good prof
Lectures were boring (the material is pretty boring itself) and u really don't need to go to them as long as u get the notes somehow. the notes and the book ARE the exam. pretty easy MC q's. good prof to take for research!
Lisa is great. Her lectures are very clear and straight forward. Take research methods with her!

Course wasn't bad provided that you studied. Written assignment was opportunity to incr. mark. Prof. was very approachable and helpful.
a very good prof. to take research methods with.
She's a really great prof! More like a close friend though than a prof. Understands our troubles, tries to help us out. Super lady!
A "so-so" prof. Her lectures can't be called boring ONLY b/c you must take notes nonstop. All she does is reading her PowerPoint.Tests are easy, yet the questions are incredibly confusing. If she tells you that something won't be on the test, make sure you know it just in case.Don't bother with style of your paper -straightforward answer will will do
PROS= Friendly, to-the-point, helpful. tests/exams challenging but fair. CONS= all you do in class is copy down pages and pages of notes, (all which is in the book anyway!), very repetitive, boring, tedious.

she was extremely helpful and patient.
the exams are way too hard.
the test was very hard. it wasnt testing our knowledge at all, rather it was about knowing some frivilous little detailed jargon. her way of teaching is so boring! it should be interactive & practical to lern such an abstract course
Very prompt in returning emails. Exam was OK - no tricks, but know material well!
Not interesting and material from the text is not taught, but u have to know lectures and the text for the exam. Exams test u on insignificant details. Too much to rd and study for the exam. Still doing pretty good in the course however, its not my cup of tea.
If you are looking to listen to a broken record, take exams that are far out there (and irrelevant), and become stressed and listen to a graduate student without a Ph.D., then you should take the course.
Very helpful, and approachable. Course is very detailed. Notes are a bit excessive but it should prepare me when I’m doing my own research. I learned a lot from the course.
not such an easy course. boring lectures. too much to memorize - what she says, what's on the powerpoint slides and what's in the text. tests are hard and somewhat ambigious. you have to know your stuff! study hard!
This prof is ridiculous. I took a 3rd year research methods class and ended up doing a thesis. I thought that was what 4th year was for?. her expectations are ridiculous. she doesnt help her students and just stands there and watches everyone work. She says she wont respond to emails unless she can reply in under 2 sentences. shes ridiculous.
I don't know what the person below is complainig about. The course did require a lot of group work but if you worked on it instead of using the time to do other things it wasn't too bad. I'll be prepared for next yr.
Save your time and money and don't take courses with her! The class average didn't exceed 62-63% and that was after she had added marks to everyone!!! on the first test, 10 people out of 50 failed the exam! and that didn't change for the second and third exam! very unhelpful, not nice, and god knows where she pulls out the questions from!
if u read the text and attend lectures, u'll do fine on the exam..otherwise, u r in trouble. nice prof. class was too early.
Lectures are very straight forward - she reads off her powerpoint slides. Tests were based mainly on the text and focus more on examples and irrelevant experiments as opposed to core concepts. If you take stats prior to the course you'll understand things better. Very boring prof but clear and concise overall.
Im surprised that this woman actually got the job somehow. In the lectures she reades straight from the powerpoint presentations, and then adds tiny little bits of her own ideas which always show up on the tests but always dont show up in my notes as i am racing to copy everything down. Simply the worst prof ever.
She is unbelievably boring. That class had the potential to be very interesting, but ended up being something of a train wreck. The tests were very challenging, mainly b/c the short answer q's were based on things not discussed in the text or in lectures. Take it with Struthers instead.
Interesting class; good notes; exams OK -- SA a bit harder than MC; Very helpful and approachable
I took this course twice. Lol. The material was interesting and could be applied to everyday life. The tests may be considered fair if you have exceptionally good lecture notes and read the text at least twice. Overall, however, the course was pretty good. The TA was also good.
I wouldn't recommend her. BORING. Reads straight off her powerpoints. You kill a class and your hand trying to copy everything down, but I guess, she wouldn't have to be there at all if she posted her notes online. Her MCs are often ambiguous and poorly written.
I actually had her for 2 courses in the winter term. She seems nice and very helpful. Lectures covered a lot of material but they were organized and interesting. Tests were fair.

if you are an ESL student ,don't take it with her. she isn't a helpful person (she is nice to certain people only) the readings just too much for only 75 questions. The text is like a review paper, couldn't really learn anything from it. overall, I am disappointed at this course.
I'm actually in 2 of her courses. I find the material very interesting and the lectures are organized well and thorough. You really need to study for the exam. You can't pull an all nighter and expect to do well. Would recommend.
This prof doesn;t know how to teach very well ... always rely on powerpoint slide ,, her test is very hard .
class is boring. its manditory so no1 really wants to take it in the 1st place. if your good at stats you'll be fine understanding the concepts. lectures were pointless kinda confusing yet they are important for the exams which are hard and the text is barely used yet the odd stuff was on the exams. she added a lot of her own stuff. the TA was the
Course content is boring. to bad it is a required course. Lectures were interesting and very easy to follow. A lot of information waws provided. Tests werent hard but challenging. Class average was low
Terrible teacher, needs to go to teacher college b/c she doesnt know how to teach, reads off slides and is very condescending unless you really understand the material. It's like pulling teeth trying to get her to explain concepts that you don't understand. wouldnt recommend as a teacher if you really want to learn
I think the course could have used a bit more stucture. But this is a 4th year course so I think we should know how to manage our time and get the work done. The TA and prof were helpful if you asked questions
Many students did not care for her as a professor. If she did not like you, your grades will reflect it. I agree with a previous comment about her being condescending if you don't understand certain concepts...I've seen her do it to students. On the other hand if she likes you expect a good grade but you have to work
A very difficult professor. Her exams are very tricky and her lectures quite boring, although she does try. She puts great emphasis on memorization of small details. I took this course in the summer and there were three exams and two assignments. The class average was very low. Take Research Methods with another prof if possible.
I'm taking the course now. The first exam was fair I got a A+. Study the textbook and attend classes if you want to do well.If you are looking for an easy course shop around.
THE FIRST EXAM WAS FAIR I GOT AN A+. STUDY THE TEXTBOOK AND ATTEND CLASSES IF YOU WANT TO DO WELL. IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR AN EASY COURSE SHOP AROUND.
Her lectures are so boring. She's doesn't know how to teach that well. Her exams are also really tricky.
very knowledgeable & know her stuff very well. material is very dry but it is a required course. If you memorize concepts, you won?t do well on her exams. exams are more applied so you need to understand the terms. if you dont study alot for this course you will get a bad mark.
The first exam was fair in that questions were right out of the text, but tricky: some were about details that no one doing research in the real world would ever need to know. I got an A+, too, but no thanks to her teaching! She does try, but should encourage involved learning, not copying PPT slides which were themselves copied from the text.
Not the best prof for Research Methods. Try to take this course with someone else. 2 tests, 2 assignments and a final exam in the month+ summer course I took. Basically reiterates the text and is extremely boring. Class average was 60%.
there is a fair amount of work to complete in 6 weeks. i don't know if i would recommend taking this course if you are taking other summer courses unless you are prepared to work. lectures are very detailed and the prof knows her stuff! exams include hypothetical examples to see if you understand the concepts. the class avg is around a C+
This prof is by far the worse one I have had through my university career! She is terrible! clearly plays favorites, BEWARE! when she assigns assignments if she does not like you, you will be stuck with some of the hardest assignments while others will be doing cookie cutter assignments. also, she is quite rude and unhelpful. STAY AWAY!
A great teacher, with a dry sense of humor. Very accommodating, is a little monotonous when lecturing. Tests are fair - more focus on understanding concepts. VERY fair marking scheme instituted after the strike. An A/A+ is possible with hard work. Ignore previous comment as assignments are clearly selected at random in this class of 100+ students.
I agree with the last comment. She was MORE than fair after the strike (there were three different marking possibilities and our mark was based on the option with the highest mark). There is always a few unhappy students who expect to get do well without putting in any work.
this prof is unbelievably difficult. she is rude if you need help, stares you down, makes ridiculously hard tests (i still managed a good mark thank goodness but had to study for her class 10x harder than for any other class).
Rude, if you ask a question you will get eye rolls and a monotone ****y reply that makes you feel like an idiot. Reads off slides, which are available on the website, but not complete just because she is sadistic.
Provides online lecture notes for Stats 1 & 2. Hates writing on the chalkboard (thank god). Full notes are not available online so go to class! Younger and easy-going. Flexible and lenient with assignments if your on her good side.
She loves the course and tries to engage students in it, but sort of boring, monotone voice. Helpful and likes to clarify, flexible with assignments, straightforward powerfpoint lectures that are posted. Simple m/c tests. Read the text and you'll do great.
GO TO THE TA. GO TO THE TA. GO TO THE TA. This prof has student-appointment-phobia and never takes appointment for students needing extra help. 3 yrs of York and I have yet to meet a student that actually likes this prof overall. This prof is PRO FEMALE feminist meaning she gives extra attention and special privileges to sum females in her class.
DO NOT TAKE STATS WITH HER!!!! This is the WORST prof I've had in my 3 years at York. Extremely uptight and snobby. She does not take the time to go through questions with students, but uses monotone to read off of her power point slides. She only goes through about 5% of the content of what she actually tests. (Ed Haltretch is a much better prof)
Avoid taking her classes.
I'm taking a couple of courses with her and find that she is prepared, clear and helpful. Exams are a bit challenging but fair. You need to know your stuff.
Seems to hate her job. TA and Prof argue amongst each other. Extremeley unprofessional. Is condescending if you ask a question. Actually rolls her eyes and makes sarcastic comments towards students. Assignments lack clarity and direction. Should not be teaching.
Not an easy course. TA not really useful - she actually confueses you or leads you down the wrong path...she's also not flexible.
Boring monotone voice. Boring class overall, but the material itself isn't that challenging. She is rude to students. One time I asked her if I had the right txtbook and she was so sarcastic and rude. Tests are confusing, I find. Avoid if u can, you'll be better off loll
if possible, try to get another prof. the course itself isn't hard but lisa is great at making you feel like an idiot. no help. doesn't post full slides online so u MUST attend class, but her lectures are too boring to handle
3 Reasons why u should never take this prof?s class. 1) Doesn?t care about students and doesn?t take appointments, questions or gives extra help. 2) Unfriendly and monotone. 3) Only cares about coming to class and reading off the slides and gives difficult exams.
Prof and her TA make sure that you fail this course. VERY STRICT MARKING...they just dont want 4th year students to do better or get a good gpa. Vague instructions, no help. AVOID this prof or u will regret like myself
worst prof ever. avoid avoid avoid her. she is MEAN and boring. ugh.
Why is this 3rd rate professor still teaching? Her lectures are of the worst quality, her own T.A's don't like her, even the class average stays between 52%-56%.
Lisa is extremely helpful. I've emailed her a number of times and she is very responsive. She even called me to discuss my concerns.THe course itself is challenging and I don't feel my undergraduate training prepared me for this course.
please avoid. hated it. she is rude rude rude rude.
This prof is by far THE WORST PROF EVER! She is boring, uncaring, monotone, rude, seems like she hates her job. Her tests are very hard, her lectures are very boring and i regret taking her class. Wish i knew of this website sooner cuz then i would have AVOIDED her...so my onlu advice is AVOID any of her classes! The worst prof i have ever had in m
She knows her stuff, but fails at making the class interesting, and isn't helpful at all. she comes to teach and leave. Marking is poor, and doesn't provide constuctive criticism.
AVOID HER AT ALL COST. She looks like she hates her job and is really rude. She makes the class boring. she's monotone. not helpful at all, she makes her TA do all the work. her tests are just plain ridiculous. the only reason why i passed this class is because her TA was cool and helped me out- AVOID HER!!!!
I've had her twice. At first I found her rude but after a while I realized she works very hard and has a dry sense of humor, which is not a crime. I wouldn't be particularly thrilled about teaching at York either.
She is the worst prof you can ever have,I'm an straigh A student and my only B was at her course, the test are strangly worded,I had psychology research method with her,she is so demotivating, rude!AVOID HER CLASS!!
Delivery was monotone, clung to the podium like her life depended on it. Clearly did not like answering questions or assisting students. Marks were late coming back, I'm into the winter semester, still don't have my fall mark. Questions on exams were poorly worded and confusing and she offered no clarity. No enthusiasm or passion in this class.
If you want to do well, you must know the course content (esp. the text) inside and out including the details of experiments etc. Her test are very difficult so read questions carefully. Unfortunately, I agree with others that she may not enjoy giving lectures. However, if you study enough, you can obtain a decent grade.
Terrible teacher. No concern for pace or clarity or answering questions. Never responds to questions in class or emailed! Tests are way above the class material and textbook questions, and with no assigned questions to practice on. Takes no pride in the word or role of teacher.
I have to agree she doesn't reply to emails and may be no help, but we are all in school to learn and maybe earn good grades. That said, she excels at that area. Her lectures vary in length and are useful. Her tests are fair..read the textbook and lecture notes and you could end up with an A....do well on the research paper, an A+
to the person that said she never responds to questions in class: i was in the same summer class as you, and she responded to every single question posed to her by students during lecture. anyway, average prof, went slowly for those of us who suck at stats, responded to all my emails promptly, posts lecture outlines before class.
She explained everything clearly and answered every single person's question which got ridiculous because it took up class time. Exams were fair, overall good professor. If you work hard and actually pay attention the 'A' will be easy to get.
I really, really regret taking her course. She was really inconsiderate towards the students and their needs. When emailed her about marks, the TA and herself kept sending me back and forth, stating that the other person had the assignment, so wasted a lot of my time. She did not go at the pace of the students and showed no interest in the material
wow, can't believe i made it thru. STAY AWAY at all cost! DO NOT take her class! worst prof at york. she's NEVER clear with what she wants from you, NEVER prepared for class (she "teaches" 30 minutes rather than 3 hrs), will give EXTREMELY LOW marks with no reason at all, TERRIBLE with email, wont answer ANY questions. this is everyone speaking
after reading all of the negative reviews, i was a little apprehensive about taking any classes from dr. fiksenbaum. however, my worries were unfounded - her lectures were very clear, the assignments and exams fair, and she was personable and helpful. i like her, and would take other classes from her in the future.
Possibly one of the most dull lecturers I have ever encountered. Prof actually waits for students to copy down every word on a slide even though they are posted online. Couldn't make it through a single lecture without having to leave to save my sanity. Assignments are hilariously easy. Tests are a bit more demanding but still straightforward.
MIDTERM VERY HARD. Better make sure u know material inside out/back to front.
This woman's teaching skills prepare her students for her exams the way showing a picture of a swimming pool to a five year old prepares him or her to swim the English Channel. She expects expertise understanding but puts forth no effort to help her students get there. Very weak professor.
Lectures are extremely clear and structured. Her pace is good; she really wants us to know the material. The mid-term exam was challenging -- you really need to understand the material. Be prepared to do some work in this course
The person below me who made the swimming pool analogy is dead on. This prof expects a thorough understanding of her material for 2nd year courses and has ridiculous exams. I understand the material taught but her exams are outrageous. She just cost me $650 as I will have to retake this course thanks to an impossible midterm. avoid at all costs
Never take a course with this prof. Ever. You need to beware: at first she seems boring and like the class will be easy. The material IS exceedingly easy, and yet the tests/assignments are impossible and marked in such a ridiculous, narrow fashion. If you ignore the warning and take the course anyway, you'll likely kick yourself, and get a bad mark
Awful. I have to teach myself the entire course using my textbook because she basically just reads from her own skeleton slides. If you ask a question she snaps at you. In class the problems are easy but then the assignments are crazy hard! I mean come on, TEACH ME SOMETHING! She is really smart but that doesn't make her a good teacher. AVOID HER!
She shows up 15-30 minutes late, and her lectures are much shorter than the 3 hours we're paying for. The swimming pool analogy below pretty much sums her teaching style. If something is due, make sure you're there on time and hand it in right at the beginning of class, even if she isn't there yet. She seems like a person who hates her job. AVOID!!
Agreed. The problem with the theory of "just throw your kid into the deep end and he'll figure it out" was that a bunch of kids drowned before they realized a better way is to actually TEACH your child to swim. She doesn't challenge you in the classroom where you can actively learn, she skims the basics and then ambushes you at exam time.
I loathe going to her classes. She's so monotone, you'll find yourself falling asleep after the first five minutes. Her exams are extremely hard, too many marks dependent on the short answer questions. I finished stats 1 with a b+ and I'm almost failing her stats 2 class.
very unprofessional, makes fun of her T.A seriously, she will embarss you in front of whole class. I doubt that this professor actually have Ph.D. Warning: Stay Away from her
She does not know how to teach. If you want to learn or want to pass the course, DO NOT ENROLL IN HER CLASS!!! I received a high grade in stats 1 which I only took last semester, and I'm failing stats 2. She has ridiculous expectations. I wished I had seen these comments before enrolling in her class.
worst prof at york from all the profs i had, seems very argumentative when you try to ask her a question about the course if someone else is teaching the same course as her take the other person...you wont get the highest mark you can in her course
Not sure why people are complaining. I'm doing well in the course. I study in advance and found the elctures very clear and well planned. You really need to understand the material to do well in the course. Those who complain should go back to high school.
she makes it hard to study and learn the material because shes very monotone and reads off her slides. for material that's already so boring, she makes it even more boring. assignments are easy to do I found many of them straight from textbook and tests are okay. I don't recommend her for a full year. you wont want to go to class
Useless prof. Not sure how she has a job. She hates teaching.
Very clear lectures. Walks you through the various stats tests in SPSS. The knowledge Igained in the course will help me with my thesis. practical course
Lisa is probably the worst professor that York has. She is rude and doesn't have any manners. She is disgusted with questions she thinks are dumb. Hey Lisa, we don't have a Phd in Stats like you do. Cut the class some slack. Stay away. Her TAs are useless too.
I found the lectures for research methods and statistics very clear and well planned. She explained concepts well and answered questions very cleraly. Her exams were fair but a bit hard. you really needed to know your stuff
Take the class if you are planning to study by yourself from the text. She does not know how to teach. She basically copies concepts from text onto a slideshow and waits for you to copy each slide. She is also rude when you email her. She has no interest in helping you and if Pearl is your TA she is very useless and frustrating to deal with too.
She is Rude, monotone and completely unapproachable. Her lectures are boring. It is clear by her unhappy nature that she does not want to be teaching. I am an A/+ student, and this was my worst class/grade at York. Although I got a fair grade, I still dreaded going to class.
Words to describe her- rude, inconsiderate, and can tell her PhD didn't make her a better person. I would try to avoid her classes if possible. I didn't have much of a choice.
York made a huge mistake by having her teach 1010. I now don't even want to be a psych major because I fear the rest will be like her. Waste of money.
not sure why i decided to take a full year course in 6 weeks. there is so much reading, i can't really keep up. lectures are very sturucted and posted in advance. interesting course. there is just too much to learn
Horrible. can not teach. copy and pastes material from book onto the slides and reads off the slides instead of elaborating on them. There are many other psych 1010 profs that are very good. Avoid her at all cost. (and she never ever replies to emais and is very distant if you want to clarify any ideas in person)
not sure why some people are complaining. she is clear and her slides are veryuseful. those who are complaining should open a book and read or try college
If you are happy with getting a C/C+ by all means take her class. Last midterm, only two people in our class received 80% and above. Class average for the last two midterm is in the 50s. So beware. Take another prof who enjoys teaching psych
Exams are extremely hard if you don't study for DAYS beforehand. Class average is probably 50 right now. 60+ is considered a high mark. She doesn't know what she's talking about when you ask questions. I don't know how she has a PHD. Her slides are OK, straight from the textbook though.
As a mature student in final year, this prof lack professionalism, delivered lectures in a monotone voice, posted and read from powerpoint lectures and was disengaged with topic and students alike. Most students did not show up or left at first break. The class marks were generally in the 40's and 50's. She bribed students to attend with starbucks
She was okay, not thats it. She reads off slide and just give basic concept, and her exams are really hard. You need to put extra effort to just PASS this course. Everyone in my class found her lecture boring and hard. And if you have Pearl as your TA, you better switch or drop your section. She doesnt know how to teach or help.
One of the worst profs I have had at York. She has zero passion for what she teaches, is condescending and gets annoyed when asked for help. Tests are incredibly hard to study for and we are tested on irrelevant details. I am an A student and only got a B in this class despite me putting far more work into this class than my other ones. AVOID.
I found her lectures very clear and interesting. If you aren't going to put in the work u should shop around. You need to attend class and read the book. Her exams are fair provided you studied. If you don't read the book but just the glossary you will fail the exams. Don't fool yourself you need to put in effort just not time
Though she does seem somewhat rude when asked questions in class and her classes are not overly interesting, there is nothing much to complain about. Everything is from the book. Read and study the book and you will do well on the exams. It was so straight forward that I found it easy to get an A. Just know the book.
she is a terrible teacher. she is not only a poor communicator, but in general very rude. stats was my favourite course first semester, but after i had her in second semester it quickly became my least favourite. i did well in the course but that is only bc I'm strong in math. i taught myself the ENTIRE course. the class avg was very low.
You can't slack off in this course. If you expect to sail through this course with little work, think again. She went incredibly slow and made sure the class understood the concepts. I think some students didn't pass high school math based on the difficulty they had solving 2+2. If you do the work, you should be fine
She is a dreadful professor. Do whatever you can to not take any classes with her! (Take the course another semester - even in the summer if you have to!) Going through the experience of taking a course with her is one that should be avoided at all costs.
You need to work in this course. Don't try to fool yourself by slacking off. You need to know your stuff. You need to know how to use the formulas and why you are using them. High school math was grader than this course. Some people struggled but not sure why.
she is a horrible teacher with a horrible personality. she is mean, and verbally cruel to her students should they ask a question in class. DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE WITH HER! stats is amazing and something you should know, fiksenbaum will ruin it for you.
I'm currently taking the course and find it easy. She does a great job expalining the stuff to the class and constantly asks if we have any questions. those that find it hard are probably not doing any work and hoping for a miracle.
Prof was crystal clear and fair. I got an a in the course. It is possible. You need to work and not stare Iinto space.
Stats was not a hard course for me personally, but that was not due to help received from Dr. Fiksenbaum. Her expectations for her assignments and tests are not clear or outlined. She did not respond to emails from students. I did not find her lectures engaging in the slightest. I found her class to be the worst I've experienced at York.
I'm taking the course now. She seems ok. She asks us repeatedly if we have any questions. We got the first assignment and it seems reasonable. I think those that complain don't take their courses seriously. This is university, not HS. Read the text and attend class and you should do ok.
I like stats but did not this prof, however I took the course W13. It seems it was a bad semester with her last winter, which it looks like is where all the negativity is coming from. Maybe she has learned from the past and improved her course, hence the newer positive comments? Just to add I had a perfect GPA besides this course. Take at own risk.
I wonder if students took math in highs school cuz they would ask the most ridiculous questions. They didn't know how to add simple numbers and whether they should multiple or add first. The course was not hard. Those that found it hard probably didn't read the book or attend lectures.
Lisa is a horrible Prof. The professor is unapproachable, and condescending when asked to clarify discrepancies with textbook and class content. AVOID!!!!!!!!!!
I dont usually write review on prof even I got a bad mark (but I usually get A) But Lisa Fiksenbaum is an exception! I am trying to be objective at this point I was taking her 3031 on SPSS Her test was the worst especially short answer questions There is no clear instructions on what you are supported to write And 5 marks doesnt equal to 5 point
I am taking the course now. I was afraid that this would be a very difficult course after what I've heard about it from others who are supposedly good students. However, this class is very fair; the material is manageable and like with any class, read the textbook, review the lectures, and you will get a good grade. I find Lisa to be very helpful.
Almost finished the course. I didn't think I would enjoy it as it is a required course but surprisingly I did. Very knowledgeable and fair instructor.
I thought Lisa was a great professor. Her lectures were clear and the tests and assignments were more than fair. Its not an easy class by any means and you have to put work into it but its definitely possible to do well. She tests for learning and application, not memorization. I would take another class with her in the future.
Excellent prof. Class environment however was ridiculous, students were self-entitled and clearly didnt study or read the text and took it out on the prof. Prof provided tutorial for learning and opportunities for tutoring, and class was well organized.
Not helpful at all!Rude comments made in class and not willing to teach using blackboard to explain solutions
Very practical course. This course was not only a refresher of statistical methods, but it also taught me how to use spss to get the stats quickly. Great review of key cocnepts provided and there was a hands on segment for each class so we knew how to understand the output
Seems like everyone is very divided on her. Sadly I fell into the dislike group. I found her very unapproachable and rude to students - even publicly berating some! I think if people are this split, do not go with her! You could end up in the unlucky half. I thought because I am very very strong at math I'd be unaffected, however I got only an A.
Lecture slides were clear and the went through the tests in a step by step fashion. We were constantly asked if we understood the matrial. If you didn't do well in the course, you prob didn't put in the effort or waited to the last minute to study. This is university, not high school.
teacher was extremely rude and unhelpful. a lot of students in the class had to drop it because marks were too low and they were actually given their money back because so many of us either dropped or failed because of her teaching methods. assignments and exam were marked differently for the same questions and she would not give explanation of why
Lisa Fiksenbaum is at best a boring lecturer. She seems to lecture as little as possible (for example our two 40% non-cumalitive midterms were two lectures apart; and we used half that time to watch a tangentially related film) and yet she draws most of her exam questions from esoteric points in her lectures. She does not like teaching and it shows
It's pretty telling that on the two tests we've had so far, only ONE person has gotten an A. She is an incredibly tough marker and test maker and gives the most boring lectures ever. What's infuriating is that she tests on the most obscure and arbitrary details and is totally inflexible even though no one is getting an A in the course. AVOID.
Tests were unreasonable. I'm an A student and I got an A in this class but it felt like the short answer was created to trick students. Prof asks ?s about concepts referred to in passing. Most students failed the short answer part of our exams so it's puzzling to me why the prof didn't make changes accordingly. Multiple choice was fair-easy.
Lectures are boring and tests are tough! I have a high GPA and study hard, but it was really unclear what she was looking for on the tests. Her slides added new info that wasn't in the textbook, and there's a LOT to cover in the textbook. Also she posts partially blank slides to force ppl into class! This could be a good subject with a better prof.
This professor is very hard to approach. She is almost condescending and is very inflexible. Her short answer questions are very hard and the multiple choice on her test were also tough but not nearly as hard as her short answer. I dropped out of her course because she was a plain terrible prof and I was getting an A in her class.
I found the material and lectures very interesting. If you aren't willing to work, you better shop around. This is university. If you aren't willing to do the work, you should get a job at McDonald's
Good course. Need to KNOW material, can't get by reading chapter summaries. Too bad many students aren't willing to do the work, just hoping to get by and do well miraculously
Worst prof I've had Good luck w the sa questions very unclear both the TA and prof are unwilling to help If it's not written word for word on what they expect you'll get major marks deducted. I'm an A student and believe in working hard for good marks but it was not worth the frustration. Would be a very interesting class w a diff prof
you definitely need to work to do well in the course. if you think you can breeze through without opening the text or attending lecture, good luck. it seems like an easy course because a lot of it is common sense, but that wasn't the case. you need to take notes,; you can't rely on the slides that are posted. do your work and you will do well.
This professor is awful. She does not give clear instructions for any assignments or tests. Does not prepare the students for what she is testing on. She assigned the whole textbook to be read and understood. Completely unreasonable professor. Defiantly complaining to the school about this prof.
Worst professor I have come across through out my university education. Does not give clear instructions in class about assignments and tests. Takes forever to release grades. Does not update any crucial information. Would never take any course with her unless I had no choice and it was absolutely necessary to pass my year.
Not sure why some students are hard on this prof. She is very thorough and if you listen, you do know what to expect on assignments and exams. Those who might have problems are probably weak students, need everything written out for them. This is university, you are expected to think independently and if you have questions ask them.
more than fair. well structured lectures. very thorough and interesting. she had us do a number of activiites which highlighted the importance of the lecture content. tests were a bit tricky but if you study you should be alright. i would take another course with her in the future.
Very organized and really know material. She may at first come across as unapproachable but if you have a question, she's more than happy to help and wants to make sure you get it. Tests are challenging, no give always here. Study well and hard, and you'll be fine
I found the course material easy to follow and very straightforward. You do need to read. If you are one that doesn't buy the text and hopes to get by by copying slides, good luck. You need to know the material and be capable of critically analyzing it. The exams are applied, scenario based. If you do a quick read the night before you won't do well
Lazy lecturer, doesn't lecture for full 3 hours. Assigns group presentations so that it occupies half of the 3 hour lecture time. Monotone voice and reads off slides during lecture. You learn a lot more from reading the text. Not worth the money.
Interesting course so far. The book is an easy read and th lectures are well structured and complement the chapters. We have to do a group presentation which is very applied, and it allows us to be creative. I'm Notmine for presentations but I guess one should expect it by 3rd year
Great course. Material can be applied to a variety of contexts. Lectures were super clear. She made sure we understood the concepts by presenting scenarios. Exams were fair. Actually the average for the first 2exams was too high. In the end she had to reduce the grades because the exams were too easy & everyone did well - were told it might happen
After one class with this prof, I dropped the course. If you are looking for an engaging experience at lecture then I suggest you do the same. Her thoughts were disorganized, her slides were garbage: She showed us paintings that look 3D for half the class. Why? IDK. I didn't expect much, but a little effort from the director would be nice.
Not your usual psyc class! The rater below clearly missed the point or didn't understand environmental psychology. Examples highlighted the points discussed on the slides and the slides were clear and easy to follow.
Terrible experience with this prof - I would drop the course if it wasn't mandatory. Her instructions are unclear, and she'll change assignment requirements/cancel classes at the last minute. Unless you're constantly checking Moodle, you'll never be prepared. Highly disorganized prof, and very condescending if you try bring any of this up to her.
So far, this course is a repeat of other research methods courses. The stuff seems to be very basic. The class average on the first test was low. I guess people think they don't need to read the book or maybe they didn't buy it since nothing is new. We had one short assignment, pretty straightforward. Lectures are super clear and organized
I took 3450 with Professor Fiksenbaum. It was terrible. She can not lecture. she brings you hours long videos to watch in class instead of going trough material and then she is testing you on 300 pages. The class average was below D... She had to curve it up in order not to fail the majority of the class. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS EVER!!!!
Interesting and easy course. Got an A. She had to bump up the grades cuz there are so many students who can't read. Not sure how they got to third year. If you aren't willing to do some work, shop around.
Not sure why some people find this course and prof. hard. The material is straightforward if you read it. Don't expect her to repeat teh text readings because she doesn't. It's a third year course so we should be capable of reading. Do your work and you will be fine.
the course content is so straightforward however this prof makes it so hard by not teaching, she literally skips slides and tells you to go over it on your own time while she kills time in class by showing videos/ted talks. waste
You definitely need to attend class and pay attention. Her slides are very straightforward, easy to follow, and clear. Made stats tolerable. Gave us extra examples to work on, and gave us two options for weighing the course requirements after the strike. Not an easy course, but if you come to class and pay attention, and keep up, you should do well
The only positive was the paper in this course was decent and graded fair. On the negative, she was boring to listen to and we spent 50% of the time listening to her ask us questions and discuss with the class. Beware she does articles in class and she does test you on them. Her tests were hard mostly because of the wording.
easy to follow lectures and she was available if we needed extra help. she's not a mind reader so you do have to ask. i love taking courses with students who shouldnt be in university. it inflates my marks and gets me closer to my goal. too bad York doesn't tighten admission requirements. if they did, it might be a university.
she is makes her course hard and its very hard to pass her course
The course outline is fair but the way this prof makes her own way of grading & testing is unacceptable. She'll not post all PP slides, which is fine but not when students have to type paragraphs of slides while she's talking. This class became more of a photography class than jotting down important information during lectures. unprofessional!
Maybe it's the content that's time consuming but she refuses to show examples once the subject is brushed over, this makes it difficult to understand how to apply the notes. Also doesn't post slides so instead of learning in class, you're rushing to type the slides and take pics while she's speaking. Super disappointed compared to other stats profs
Had no choice but to choose this prof and I still regret it. Lectures are a photography class since she does not post even simplified pp. This may also be bc of the TA but its literally 3 days before our second midterm and we haven't received our first midterm marks (4 weeks) AND Lisa refused to move the 2nd test claiming the school won't let her.
Great course. I am learning a lot about statistcs and really enjoying it. Lisa knows a lot. We just got back our first test. hard to believe that someone only answered the multiple choice and didn't bother with the computations. Did the person buy or read the book. Great for me to have those students in the class. Boosts my grade!
No enthusiasm. Reads off slides. No point in going to class.
The entire course was taught by students group projects. She didnt teach a single thing. Horrible grading criteria and no actual outline for a paper worth 30% of your grade. Only a paragraph in the syllabus explaining and yet she still marked it very hard and specific. Also participation was 15% but she never took attendance once. Unapproachable
I wasnt looking forward to taking stats after hearing horror stories from others. Lisa made the course very manageable and interesting. She knows a lot and presents the material in an easy to follow format. Too bad there were a few students who held the class back. They should have styaed in Stats 1
im currently taking research seminar with her at glendon and i'm enjoying the course. her lectures are organized and easy to follow. we were able to choose our presentation topics and i'm feeling prepared
I enjoyed the course & looked forward to it every Wednesday at 8:30. Lisa was very laid back & generated good discussion. She taught during the first term and then we had debates. Pretty much what you would expect of a seminar course. Not sure what the previous review is about who had a grade of D student probably didnt show up or do any work.
Interesting course. Very philosophical at the beginning and then students did presentations. They were supposed to be debates but some students didn't get it. There were no exams in the coruse but great discussions. Lisa was extremely fair and accessible. I got a decent grade with very little effort. Would HIGHLY recommend
got my grade in this course and was pleasantly surprised. Got an A. what an easy course. no exams. weekly thought papers for the first few weeks and then handing in peer evals. the course content was interesting but sometimes the discussion was off topic. had a lot of fun in the course and Lisa was very nice and understanding during a difficult yea
great course. no exams no textobok. we had weekly papers for the first term and a presentation with one other student. workload was manageable. if you aren't a strong writer and prefer MCQ this course isn't for you
Great class and experience. Loved the discussions. It was such a fun class even on zoom. This was one class that I looked forward to - compared to most of all my classes. Would highly recommend - what a great experience!!
Idk where these good reviews are coming from, they don't reflect students' experience. In our class most students expressed dissatisfaction with her. She's rude. Won't reply to emails. Show up, hand in your work but if you're looking forward to learning something she is not ideal. She doesn't teach AT ALL. The students taught the whole course
She does not explain at all and her feedback are very vague. She gives presentations and paper with no guidelines and marks very tough. Avoid her at all costs. The whole was was based on only presentations and she didn't do anything
Have a comment/questions keep it to yourself because she is rude af. No instructions for paper and presentations that are worth 20-30% and yet she marks very tough. Do not take her class if you don't need
Approachable and friendly for the most part. incredibly chill throughout most of the semester however there were times where she was impatient and rude with some students. This is the second time I took 4230 and Its easier with her, fair grading. beware final paper has no guidelines. recommend taking it with her if you are at Glendon.
This is a seminar course so unlike other classes there is little lecturing. Most students don't realize that and expect something else. The course is basically an article critique. Very little work for a half credit compared to other courses. I enjoyed the course. We picked the topics and most students discussed it from their perspectives.
Extremely confusing, and rude when you ask for clarification. She treats you like an idiot when you ask any sort of question, everyone is confused because there are no clear instructions and then gets condemned for asking a question. Her responses to questions are not only extremely rude, they also do not help and only add to the confusion.
Not a caring or understanding professor. Also has a very rude demeanor. Would not recommend taking a class with her if you have the option.
Great class! Explained the material well and was extremely patient. Assignments required some thought, but if you put in the time and grasped the material, you should be fine. Need to come to class prepared.
Very interesting course. Great discussion. Reflection papers for the first half of the course and then peer reviews, presentation, and paper. It's too bad that some of the students were bland, and not the quality one would expect of upper year students. Lisa tried to salvage their presentations by generating discussions.
Interesting discussion during most classes. Some students were off topic and seemed to have been trying to sail by. Would have been a better class if students came prepared to class, and possibly if in 4ht year, students were stronger students. Very philosophical course. Opened my perspective - would recommend.
Lisa wasn't a good prof, she lacked energy in lectures and seemed bored with her own course, acted snobby to students' questions and didn't show our final paper grades. she stated to "contact the turnitin help desk" because she didn't make them visible. if you can avoid this class. Also, throughout the year class would be randomly moved online.
Terrible and lazy. She gave zero feedback on any work or presentations. Would briefly leave during presentations that she should be GRADING. She would close portals to submit work if you leave class with 10 minutes left, marking you absent. She was also so rude to students, unhelpful during the York U strike and was very rude replying to emails.
Interesting course. I didn't know much about it when I signed up. Lisa was a great professors, one of the better ones that I have had. I learned something unlike other professors that give out grades. Lisa is knowledgeable & encourages critical thinking. We were comfortable sharing out thoughts and asking questions. Wasn't a course for all
Great class. I loved the debates, especially listening to the 3 guys in the class debate with each other. Some students didn't get it. I think it is a gen z thing
Such an easy and interesting course. For the first part we had weekly reflections and the second part there were evaluations of presentations. An easy give away. Some presentations were not debates but that is not surprising since this generation cant follow instructions. Makes other shine. Great class.
Great course&very understanding prof--listens to your concerns, cares about helping you achieve good grades, and classes are engaging. It was my first time writing reflection papers. I thought it would be hard but it wasn't bad. Just had to show how you connected to readings. Some of the topics were so interesting. Wished we had more time for them.
Great course and super laid back prof. Lisa created a sense of community and I wasn't nervous to present. I learned so much from this course. Lisa shared with us so much information, much more than I got in any other course. Would definitely take another course with her, but I am done my degree.
Interesting course. At first, I was worried about the course since we had to do 2 presentatoins but it wasn't bad at all. Lisa created a very supportive and relaxed environment. I also learned so much from her. she really knows a lot about research and it helped me critique my article. I learned more from her than my other research and stats class.
Course was intellectually stimulating. Lisa demonstrated a strong understanding of the subject matter & presented the content in a clear and engaging way. The seminar format promoted active participation and created a collaborative learning environment. Overall, it helped me to rethink some of my own beliefs & develop critical thinking skills.
She doesn't teach she makes you do presentations for the ENTIRE YEAR from November till APRIL. Multiple students complained at the end of the year about her, that's why she has positive reviews, she wrote them herself to boost her ratings. She is rude, snarky and sarcastic when you ask a question. She will not help you if you need assistance either
Oh my god this class was a mess.
When students emailed her abt a broken lecture link she ignored us and posted "The link is correct, I copied and pasted it." When I emailed politely asking her to fix it she replied "Check the announcement." Never says hi in email or addresses us by name, her tone is dismissive, and constantly cuts off students. terrible person, nevermind prof.
Exams left students in tears, read the textbook or don't doesn't matter questions won't be from there anyway. Also if you have a technical difficulty leaving the class and forgoing the grade will do as much help as she will. Avoid like the plague
Engaging class with a caring professor who listens to students. Weekly reflections and presentations made it easy. unstuck study was helpful for prepping. Wish we had more time on the intriguing topics.
Rude and mean for no reason. If she doesn't like you prepare to be bullied and belittled. She speaks down to everyone and is not a good teacher. She's unhappy and it shows.
This is such an interesting course. It's hybrid and only a handful come in person. I'm not sure if those online are really there. Lectures are super clear and Lisa goes through the material very slowly. Too bad students do not participate
teaches five lectures in total for the whole year Where she sits and reads off a screen. After it's entirely student presentations for the rest of year. Beware of the TWO hour presentation you gotta do because she got tired of teaching and wanted the students to do the rest. She also picks favourite so be careful.
Lisa is one of the professors who has taught so much to so many people. I feel privileged to be in her class. It can get tough, and yes, a tad boring sometimes, but it is rewarding and this is an upper year course so I expect it to be strenuous and at times difficult.
Is it just me or is the prof writing her own reviews?
Interesting content. Small seminar course. No exams and easy marks so far.
LISTEN TO THE REVIEWS!!! they're the way they are for a reason! the overly positive "interesting course" or "great course" ones make no sense. do not take a class with Lisa guys
Seminar course. We've had a few student presentations so far. supposed to be debates but not exactly. very philosophical course. if that's your thing, you may want to give it a try
Avoid at all costs. She doesn't care on if you have technical issues during an exam, she won't let you retake it. Never provides an actual exam review and responds very rudely. She also publicly humiliated me when I had issues with my computer. Most of her lectures are just reading off slides and most of what's on exams is never discussed in class.
Never again. I, along with everyone else, taught myself this course. She was not available, not helpful, and crushed my excitement for this class. At some point, she stopped having lectures and just recorded videos and posted them. We also got accused of cheating multiple times, and she made the test nearly impossible because of it. Never again.
Lisa was horrendous, avoid her at all costs. She lectures for 5 classes and has the class do her job for the rest of the year with debates. Her expectations are unclear and when you ask for clarification she's incredibly unhelpful.
Interesting content but she doesn't teach or even discuss the topics. Very unhelpful, doesn't want to give people clear guidelines because “ she wants people to be creative”. And then complains that students aren't doing it properly. Doesn't even seem to be paying attention to presentations because she doesn't ever share her thoughts.
Avoid this prof at all costs. No rubrics, no clear grading, and no feedback until it's too late. I lost $1,356 and got a W on my transcript because she withheld marks past the refund deadline. She doesn't know students' names, mishandles eClass, and won't own her mistakes. Completely unprofessional. DON'T TAKE HER COURSE, YOU WILL REGERT IT I SWEAR
AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!! IGNORE THE POSITIVE REVIEWS SHE WRITES THEM HERSELF AND DOESN'T EVEN BOTHER TRYING TO HIDE IT!!!!
Lisa set up the course so badly. Her TAs (Jessica Newman and Laura Harris-Lane) also grade so crazily. Social psych is a fairly simple course. I haven't even received a 60% on either of the tests yet. I'm usually a straight-A student, and SOCIAL PSYCH is my FAV! It's really depressing to be stuck in her class. I'm pretty sure I failed the course.
I should've listened to all the comments here but being an A+ student I thought the class couldn't be that bad + I was excited to take social psych. Turns out it was a terrible decision and has messed up my GPA. She doesn't care that she doesn't teach how she writes exams and expects students to know. Her tests are diabolical and weighted 40/40/20.
Straight-A student who dropped after the midterm. Her content barely covers actual content from the course/textbook. First midterm, we started about 20 mins late. Did not help a student having IT issues and lectures are boring and monotone. She did show me my mark so i could drop before deadline so theres that.
