I love Filippi! She is so much fun and she is so helpful, everything you need to know she tells you and is clear about. Everything that is on the tests are on powerpoint. She answer any questions you have and u actually learn something from her classes. I took her for Animal Behavior and Ecology too! We went on awesomefirld trips too!
she very unhelpful but if you understand her concept you will do fine. If are the same person as her-you will do fine but most people are confused by her understanding of evolution again beware she is really difficult
I hated it and her.She was so unclear. I didn't get anything she said. It is not just because I didn't want to get the subject. If you ask her a question,she looks at you as if your in college and cannot ask any question not on her level. Many have had gotten into arguments with her even during class, sometimes funny but not if your trying to learn
I have taken all of Prof. Filippi's classes and i have enjoyed every one. She is fun and encourages a lot of participation, so you learn a lot. If you go to class and participate (READ) you are guaranteed to do well on the tests.
I think Professor Filippis is wonderful. I took Human Biology and Evolution and Biodiversity with her. I started out as someone who hated science and was just taking the course to fill a req, to really understanding and enjoying the subject and even considering a minor in bio! She makes difficult concepts easy to understand for anyone!
I really liked Filippi, I had her for Evolution and Biodiversity, and for a science course for non-majors, i really learned a lot. She is really nice, and really goes out of her way to help you if you don't understand something. She really made biology interesting, I highly recomend her.
Very clear. She will always explain herself if you do not understand. Very easy. She will let you correct your test to obtain extra points. She just wants you to learn and participate. She assigns one paper which you should review with her before handing in if you want to get an A. If you don't it doesn't matter b/c she lets you resubmit.
i had Filippi for Bio 105 anddo not recommend at all. She's boring, annoying,and overall a bad teacher. She gives a review sheet for the tests but it is full of info that isnt even on the test. worst tests ever, full of all/ none of the above, A & C, A & B, B&C,answers.More than half the class failed the first test..whos fault do you think that is?

I don't really know where to start. This was one of the worst classes I have taken @ HU. Prof Fillipi's A&P class was unprofessional, inarticulate, unorganized, and generally a disater. She has no clue how to operate a cpu, power point presentations were a train wreck, she seemed uninterested in the subject matter being taught was not knowledgeabl
Wow she is something else, she butchered my GPA, with no mercy. worked my ass off for this class and am prob walking away with a B-.
This lab is horrible. She hardly teaches, when you ask her a question she has to go look up the answer, and all you do is look up parts of the body and memorize them the ENTIRE class. It's basically a study hall. The exams are ridiculous, you need to know EVERYTHING in order to pass. If you don't have a life, you can join her class.
She's so intelligent yet she can't teach a class. I don't know if you've had a professor like her before, but it's really hard to comprehend what she's talking about, ESPECIALLY when you top it off with all the information you need to learn. If you have her, make sure you go to every class, and do the extra credit, you'll most likely need it.
She's bad, I basically taught myself the material from the textbook. She seems to really know the material, but cannot effectively teach it. Avoid if possible.

im a senior, i need to be out of here on sunday. my degree is resting on getting a c-. its the second time with her that i have taken this class. ive done extra credit attended almost all the time class. bombed lab with ruilson cause it was free for all in his class. this has made me feel like im going to have a heartattack.
she's actually horrible. do NOT do NOT take her. the class test averages are in the 40-50s and she says she doesnt curve. STAY AWAY FROM HER. she is miserable and makes everyone miserable. she doesn't know how to teach at all. seriously do NOT take her. worst teacher ive ever had at hofstra.

Filippi is a tough teacher no doubt. But she is actually a pretty decent lady. Her tests are crazy hard but if you dedicate some time you'll still get a good grade. She IS fair in her grading despite what other people say. Its going to be a tough course no matter who you have for it, I really think she is underrated though.
Regardless about what everyone else says about Dr. Filippi, she's a good teacher and really understanding. I was sick for a good chunk of the semester and out of all my prof's, she gave the best benefit of the doubt and still helped me pull off a decent grade. If you like the subject, class will be interesting. Oh, and...she loves her bug & Japan.
She is a nice lady but she says she has no time to give reviews for test so your pretty much on your own. I suggest study groups and reading the text book. Her test are very hard and confusing so study for every test like its the final!

Her class was relatively easy if you just read the powerpoints and textbooks and did the studying that you needed to do, but in class she rambles on about her research and irrelevant topics so much that we were 6 chapters behind by mid-semester. She is also very unwilling to make adjustments to her schedule to help you if you need it.
Wow I don't know what everybody is talking about. Dr.Filippi was AMAZING. She made me remember why I loved Bio. She's always clear, not that disorganized and goes out of her way to make sure everybody understands, insisting on office hours and everything. Her tests are not that hard and her review questions each class really help. Take her!
When she feels rushed, she will rush. She will go through the slides so quick that you won't have time to copy down the things she says or the things in the powerpoint. Sometimes she speaks too low and fast. Somewhat too harsh when it comes to grading. If you can get a different professor, do it.
Amazing professor with a genuine love for biology and teaching. I learned a lot from this class; the tests were fair and to the point; nothing but praise for Professor Filippi. I will hopefully take her again for another course and highly recommend.
Well.. she's hard. Her tests are hard and she doesn't curve them so her class isn't easy. If you read the textbook prior to every class, you should be able to understand since her notes come directly from the textbook. Overall, I'd recommend her if you study ahead
She is very disorganized and will rush a lot.Her test questions are very random an focused on one chapter out of many that she should be testing. No daily hw but you need to keep up with the reading
Her office hours are gold. She will go over anything and will often unintentionally really highlight what is on the exams. Pay attention to what she talks about a lot in lecture more so than what's in the book. If she brings it up more than once, it's on the exam. She has a lot going on in her life though and can be disorganized.
I don't know why people are giving her bad reviews! Yes, in A&P if you don't study, you won't do well!! Course is tough but go to her for help and you should get an A. She also gives away a lot of what will be on the test, so office hours are crucial!! I'd recommend taking a class with Dr. Filippi. She also cares about her students so much!
I love Filippi. After taking Clendening, Filippi was a dream. I'm not going to lie, the class is hard but she is good at what she does. She asks questions at the beginning for credit and it helps for review, but just be prepared. She is really funny and kind of crazy. I loved her class and i felt accomplished when I passed. TAKE HER!!
She reads off her powerpoints and then includes a random fact like about potatoes. She at least drops one test and that is very necessary. Her tests are NOT easy. You must read your textbook to do well in this class. I recommend reading the textbook before or after class, each time. She always takes attendance so good luck
Stay away from her!! By far the worst professor I've ever had at Hofstra. She is rude and obnoxious. She has way too much going on in her life to be an effective teacher.The class averages were always so low, probably because she can't teach if her life depended on it. Don't take her you'll regret it
She is the worst bio professor ever. Her tests are straight from the textbook and very detailed, so if you can keep up with all the reading and remember every single word you read then you will pass. Good luck with that.
Dr. Filippi is a legendary bio professor in comparison to Clendening. I used to complain a lot about Filippi, but she is 1000x better than Clendening and her class is not nearly as difficult or strenuous. Filippi is awesome.
I signed up for RMP just for this teacher. This is the hardest class I have ever taken. She can be summed up in one statement: The class average for tests are 50-60 percent and she does not curve. There are 3 midterms and a final. If you want a major challenge and want to see if you are cut out for this major, take her. She is not a good teacher.
First day she said if we wanted to get into med school we probably won't, and she conveniently has some environmental program opening up soon. Didn't get much from lectures, powerpoints were bare-bones definitions, read the book cover to cover, did all the bioportal stuff,,,found her tests to be pretty unfair. Study guide was misleading. No curve.
She is fine, you just need to study. Kids will complain about how bad she is in class, but honestly if you study from the power points and the textbook, this class is easy. She is always there for office hours. With some work, an A is easily attainable.
She is a horrible professor. Her tests are very hard and very specific. Some answers are close to each other, but only one is correct. Her emails are not professional, they are confusing and she usually has to send multiple to correct things she messed up on in the previous email. DO NOT TAKE
I loved this professor. Bio12 is a hard class no matter what. It isn't her fault the material is difficult. She is so helpful during office hours and as long as you show up to class and study it is not that hard to do well. She'll give you study guides for tests and will drop the lowest exam grade.

Filippi is an amazing professor. She clearly LOVES biology, which is important, and seeming harder to find these days. Her class requires effort, but if you're not willing to put in the work, you do not deserve a good grade. She's constantly asking if what she taught is clear and always stops to reclarify if needed. EXTREMELY RECOMMENDED!!
Filippi is the type of professor that just reads off the slide. Does nothing more for you. God forbid you miss an online quiz or test, good luck trying to make it up. She's really mean about that and she is always talking about her family that has no relevance to this class. I wish she would read this and improve her teaching.
Professor Filippi is MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE! A lot of people think she's a bad professor because they don't put in more effort than reading powerpoints. The textbook is definitely needed to go more in depth, but she knows what she's doing. The personal stories she tell usually pertain to the lesson!!
Dr. Filippi is very nice! I took her class and she was always willing to help if you actually go to the office ours she tells you about. GO TO THEM. She will clarify things that you don't understand personally and sometimes will give you hints on what is on the tests!! The tests get increasingly difficult, you need to read the book to do well.
She is nice and always encouraged students to visit office hours. I tried going but she either isnt in her office or you have to wait to be helped(i waited for an hour and a half and once i got in to talk with her i only had 10 min before i had to go to class) Her tests are impossible because they are so specific. Gives extra points for attendance
Very Rude Professor. Refuses to hold office hours for students, sometimes shuts off lights in office to hide from students. NOT A EFFECTIVE PROFESSOR MAINLY SPEAKS ABOUT HER FAMILY AND PLANS SHE HAS FOR OVER THE WEEKEND. WORSE PROFESSOR AT HOFSTRA. SHE FEELS, AS IF SHES AN ACTUAL DOCTOR AND IS ENTITLED. VERY STUCK UP PROFESSOR. NOT VERY NICE.
Shes very knowledgeable and as soon as you get used to her teaching methods, you'll find her tests manageable. If you put in the effort and take her class seriously she will give you a great grade.
HORRIBLE PROFESSOR DO NOT TAKE. she makes it so hard to pass her class. for five semesters in a row students had averages in 50's and she still blames the class. she is not helpful and just reads off the PP slides. Her tests are basically impossible. SO RUDE. never answers your questions. BIO 12 is a hard class and she makes it even worse.
Filippi is meh, her classes are slightly helpful if you pay attention but the textbook is gonna be your best friend, I spent more time with it than my own family. Her tests are really specific & the class is intense, but if you study & keep up with the reading then its manageable. Do the homework on time! She uses questions from there on the tests!
She is a good teacher. Sometimes in lecture she goes off about her kids and their accomplishments and then you end up behind and she tends to rush the lessons to fit them all into the test. She goes over the test in office hours and has no problem helping and explaining and changing what's wrong and why. If you follow the power points you'll pass.
she's a pretty tough grader. She reads off of the powerpoint and put around 5 units on one test and excepts you to know all of the material. Test dates are not flexible even if we don't finish the unit.
The material is hard in general for an introductory biology class & she takes the opportunity to make it unbearable. She makes tests harder each time if too many people do well. Learningpad and office hours to go over tests are helpful but she does not curve, & only gives +5 points for attendance which can be a make or break. Study always.
Came from straight A's from High School to barley passing. Honestly idk if i will, i will have the final tomorrow. So hard, so mean. Literally wants you to fail because to show how hard med school will be on ur first semester at hofstra. half the class dropped out and changed majors. Take anyone but her. But the class in general is very hard.
If youre willing to put in the effort, you will do fine.
Read the assigned pages carefully because the quizzes she gives at the beginning of class can be on literally anything from the chapter. If you do this the class should be a bit easier. Also be sure to start your lab reports as soon as possible.
I don't know about lecture but for lab she is good! She isn't a tough grader and will help you if you ask for it! She is clear with what she expects on lab reports, etc. The only down side is the pre lab quizzes! It can literally be on anything so make sure you read the assigned chapter thoroughly before taking the quizzes! Would take again for lab
If you read the textbook and pay attention in class, you will do very well. She is so nice and approachable and will help you with whatever you need! Much better than a lot of the other professors in the Bio department.

This is an average biology class, there's nothing bad about her as a professor. She just gives the lectures and there's a decent amount of reading but anything you do will help you on the tests. if you study you'll do fine
She is really negative to the students and she doesn't really explain the information your learning very well extremely heavy on the information on her test also according to her you need to study 5 hours a day for her class and with just. A 15min break so if you have a job while In school do not take her class you will not pass

I had Dr. Filippi for bio 15, she's really sweet!! Attendance was only a small part of your grade, so you didn't have to go to class if you didn't want to. If you did show up, she told you exactly how she wanted everything for the lab reports, which were the main part of your grade. She made it really easy and was always willing to help! Love her!!
She is a nice person but not a great teacher. She goes off on tangents a lot and gets behind schedule. She assigns a lot of pointless homework that just waste time. You need to read the textbook because she won't teach everything that is on the test. I mainly self studied, but the course itself isn't that hard so it is not that hard to do well.
She is knowledgable but she was uncooperative and derogatory when I noted that I have special accommodations for testing. Her syllabus is outdated, and she spent a good 15 minutes of class almost every time trying to figure out how to use a simple computer. If I didn't read the textbook, I would have more knowledge of her family than biology.

She doesn't care about her students. She lectures really fast so you either try to focus or take notes, no in between. The only way to pass is to self-study, a lot. Exams are very hard and detail-oriented, they don't cover all the topics assigned. Come to her office hours for exam review.
The most influential professor I have ever taken! Highly recommend her classes. Shes is very hands on and inspiring. Shes a tough professor but you wont forget the material you have learned. I am so happy I took her! Took her for bio 12, entomology and organic evolution.
Shes the nicest professor Ive ever had. Her lectures were funny and informative and she encourages students to attend her office hours with questions. I used to hang out in her office to help other students and chat with her. Even after I finished her class she continued to advise me on other dos and donts for college and for my specific field.
She's a great person and really connects with her students but teaching wise she's okay. She's not the best but she does try and does explain a lot about every topic. Her pacing in the class is good.
Dr. Filippi is very nice and understanding, but her lectures feel more like tangents. They disorganized and confusing. It was hard to follow lectures in class and test and quiz questions are oddly specific with very slightly different answer choices. The class is doable, but it requires a lot of self teaching and studying.
Dr. Filippi is very knowledgable. Sometimes her lectures may be a bit boring and she even assigns bonus lectures to watch outside of class because we never finished anything on time. But, if you like self teaching and have good test taking abilities then the class wasn't too bad.

If youre absent and dont do the readings, you will fail. Her tests cover HW+CW. Her tests are wordy and you have to know her definitions of things. Her lecture is dependent on student participation, so if nobody say anything the class is a drag. Her slides are confusing and seem out of order sometimes, and usually are not detailed.
Dr. Filippi can be very rude and expects all her students to act like scientists. Also says that if you want to pass the class you need to study at least 2 -3 hours a day. Tests are very wordy and doesn't do any review of what you should know. Dont take her class again unless you want her to make you feel like you aren't allowed to make mistakes.

Dr. Filipi, for BIO 112, is a tough professor. You are going to have to do a lot of reading, memorize many concepts, and participate in class. However, it is not impossible to get an A in her class. She can be a little stubborn at times and sometimes puts weird questions on exams; however, if you put the work in, you can get a good grade.
Dr. Filippi is amazing and super sweet, I've had her for 012 and 154. A lot of reviews seem to be from freshmen or new bio majors so don't let that deter you from taking a class with her. A lot of the assignments are easy As and the tests are pretty basic stuff. Plus she does extra credit and is open to give extensions if you're having a hard time.
Dr.Filippi is an amazing professor for a intro BIOL course. The material on the exams comes directly from the class presentation. She does have a daily assignments due before most class but honestly they are easy and help your grade. Overall if you pay attention in class you will do amazing in the class, she also posts the lectures on zoom.
Had her through a professor change. Lacked compassion for her new transfer students and graded our final inaccurately (taught different topics compared to our first professor). I genuinely never knew what was going on in the lecture. She's all over the place and gets distracted easily. Her exams always had mistakes in them and then she would complain about having to go back and fix it. I would try to avoid having her if possible. She's nice but not a good teacher.
She is one of the worst professors I've ever had. Taught incorrect information, cut students off before they could answer her questions and tell them they are wrong, terribly worded tests and quizzes. Very very subjective teacher and I would not recommend her for anyone.

Gives homework that are based on readings due before each class. DO THEM!!! Overall, they are annoying but help your grade tremendously and can all be found in textbook. She is compassionate and willing to work with you. Exams are not bad just wordy. Overall a great person, even though she is not the best with technology. Recommend!!!

She's a very nice person, but I am unsure if she knew what to give us for BIOL 127. It did not teach us any lab skills, only writing a single research paper.
I took her for Bio112 and she is okay. She is very knowledgeable in biology but I struggled with her teaching methods. She is very very lecture-heavy, you must attend class to pass. I thought her tests were okay, the class averages were always in the 70s. You must study your lecture notes to do well on the exam.
Dr. Filippi is a funny lady. She seems quite knowledgeable and passionate about her work, but is prone to disorganization and distraction. If you're someone who can excel without a ton of structure in your learning, you've found the right place. She's a pretty forgiving grader (especially in upper level courses), and assignments are pretty easy.

Dr. Filippi is awesome in her lectures. She ensures that we understand the lessons fully and offers any extra help she can give. Her exams are questions based off of what we learned in her slides so I think that makes it great study material and straight foward. Read questions carefully and take notes on her codon assignments, it'll help.
Dr. Fillipi is kind and approachable, but the class was disorganized and unclear. Lectures lacked structure, communication was vague, and exams didn't match what was taught. Many students felt confused and unsupported. Kindness isn't enough without clear, effective teaching.
Took her for lab and shes so far the best bio professor I have had at Hofstra. Gives good feedback and is very encouraging to her students. She focuses more on having you improve your writing skills rather than trying to beat down your grade like other professors. Just do the work and put effort and youll be good. Not a draining course take her!!!
Dr. Filippi was absolutely amazing. I had her for lab skills in ecology and evolution, every assignment and project she gave amazing and clear criteria and feedback. She's so very sweet and caring and wants you to do great I couldn't recommend her more
While Dr. Filippi is very kind and accessible outside of class, her exams are quite specific to her lectures & the examples she talks about. Her slideshows can also be a little bit confusing, so it's especially important to pay attention in lecture to understand it later when reviewing for midterms and finals.
