I loved the way this class was set up because the assignments and deadlines were very manageable. Dr. Klotz is a great professor. I was dreading this class before the quarter started but by the end it was my favorite class.
What an enthusiastic professor! I didn't think I'd like the course but Klotz made it very interesting. There were a fair number of assignments but they are explained very clearly and graded fairly.
Two pronged course: research based and writing based. Expect: to spend time in the law library, to learn how to research law beginning to end, to learn how to write like a lawyer, to learn how to analyze case law and statutes like a lawyer. Dr. Klotz's course is the closest law school intro you'll find at UCD. She's pleasant and educated. J.D./PhD
For a class that is the least specified for upper division writing requirements, there was a heavy legal emphasis on what our papers were. As a science major, I'm not entirely interested in court laws/ jurisdictions, legal processes, or the SCOTUS, but papers were about analyzing legal texts, or 10 prepared debate as an attorney for a case. Ehh
JUST GO TO OFFICE HOURS TO GET AN A!She doesnt give any instructions in class but during office hours she'll tell you exactly what she's looking for in the assignment. You are guaranteed to get a higher grade if she knows you came to office hours. Class is avg amount of work & final is a reflective essay. Be on TIME to class or she marks you absent
If you plan on going to law school, Dr. Klotz is a must! She gives you all the tools you need to be successful as a law student. As a current law student, everyday I use everything Dr. Klotz taught me! It may be difficult, but it is to get you to put in the work and interact with your professors and classmates, like a lawyer.
Office hours are a must for Klotz. She assigns a lot of writing, but doesn't always give clear criteria for what she is looking for on them. The class is extremely peer-review heavy, and she takes role so you have to show up, which can get kind of annoying when you aren't working on anything major. Class revolves around a 3500 word policy paper.
Peer review heavy, which can be difficult when your assigned peer group law firm is composed of people with whom you do not want work. Klotz is pedantic but fair overall. Put in the time and youll get by with an A, nothing intellectually taxing or inspiring about her class.
The course was pretty straightforward. It worked up to the main policy paper. She split the process of the paper into short homework assignments to help you in the writing process. The two big assignments were the policy paper and presentation. I thought it was a fun experience, I would definitely do it again.
Obviously this is UWP and youre going to write a lot but everything that Klotz had us write was actually useful because everything could be used for the policy paper which was due at the end of the course. She lets you choose your own topic and is very good at giving the exact feedback for you to get an A. UWP can be boring but she made it engaging
Professor Klotz was an amazing professor for such a difficult subject. She made legal writing clear and easy and made sure that all expectations were very obvious. She has shown me how interesting law can be and every class was entertaining. All the cases were very interesting and she explained each one.
I really enjoyed this class & Klotz! This class requires staying on top of your work by giving urself time to read&digest information, asking for help when needed it, and most importantly, following instructions¬ going outside what u are asked to do. Klotz wont just give u the answer,but she will definitely help u get there if u show her u care
Online was not the best experience. Some recorded lectures, discussion posts, mini case briefs, a few big papers. Online peer reviews were not very helpful. Easy B but harder to get an A.
While I enjoyed the class overall, the professor's criteria for grading were very vague and resulted in lots of confusion for myself and several peers. She looks for specific words rather than demonstrating knowledge of the subject, so be sure to ask clarifying questions as often as possible. She's very inflexible and won't accept any late work.
5th quarter at UCD and Klotz is one of the best as far as course content, accessibility, clear instruction and course load. Quarter expectations are crystal clear as well as individual assignments. Weekly - discussion/responses, case exercises and peer reviews. (150-250 words) Chose Klotz over two others after viewing their syllabi/canvas layouts.
Klotz grades harshly and is not really open to questions from students. She gives the vibe of not wanting to be there and sometimes will point at the board while lecturing when nothing is written on it.
Informative lectures for first 2-3 weeks only. After that you are given assignments and expected to ask her questions about how to write the assignments. Try to ask as many questions as possible to get an idea of how she wants a paper to be done. Peer reviews are counter-intuitive since no one is being taught how to actually write the assignments.
She grades way too hard! Whenever I ask for help she tiptoes around the answer but is never clear. There are a few assignments worth 1-3 points but all the larger assignments are 20-25 points and she grades harshly and expects perfection. Requires attendance but it's not worth anything. Also when we finish early she doesn't let students leave
Despite a clear rubric for the writing assignments in this class, sometimes feedback did not feel actionable even after going to OH for clarification. The professor is not that accessible via email. The readings are interesting - definitely do your best to prepare for discussing them ahead of time! Overall a really valuable class!
This professor knows lots about the world of law. However, she doesn't make it clear what is expected of us and there is no consistency in how we are graded. Also, unless she announces ahead of time that class will end early, she does not let us leave early even if we're finished with everything. However, I learned a lot about fences and vehicles.
Probably one of the worst professors in the department. Goes off on tangents every lecture but requires attendence so you basically get to listen to her talk about nothing the whole class. She also seems to really dislike helping students outside of class, like its an inconvience even though SHE didnt teach us. I recommend any other prof for UWP.
She's great and prepares you for law. Get started on work early and ask questions strategically, she's not going to give you the answers. Many slack off in this course which I noticed during peer review when some students would take some of your ideas and work. In essence, take some of these reviews with a grain of salt and take this class!
Professor Klotz is amazing. If you put in the effort and follow her guidelines, you will be so rewarded from her classes. Very kind and helpful in office hours and is very engaging during classes. 100% would take again.
Took this class over summer which may be why it was difficult but overall the professor was very unhelpful. Canvas was disorganized when it came to lecture slides, and she did not teach well in class either. Graded way too harshly for what is a beginner course in legal writing. It also seemed like she didn't want to help students.
Writing this early because her reviews need redemption! She's a good professor and I've enjoyed the class, those who are pre-law will too. We do case briefs, office memos, and do peer reviews that help a ton when refining our writing. The cases are a little difficult to understand at first but she does a good job helping us understand them
She isn't mean or extremely unreasonable but does not explain feedback or answer clarification questions. Her only answer to any question regarding instructions on an assignment is "We discussed this in class." She preaches how important feedback is but doesn't provide any when asked.
This professor is the complete opposite of helpful. If you are struggling with mental health, she is completely unempathetic and cold. It almost seems that she enjoys to punish those who are struggling.
She may not be the warmest professor sometimes, but her expectations are quite clear, and she leaves helpful reviews after each major assignment. There are case briefs and office memorandums to write, and each of those is followed up with peer reviews. The cases can be difficult to understand at first, but rereading them can help you understand.
She is okay its not an easy class but I feel like for this type of class its to be expected. She wasn't the BEST but she wasn't the WORST. I had mixed feelings in this class.
Professor Klotz is a caring prof that focuses on improving her student's writings. There is a lot of writing for this class, but if you focus on the rubric, and revise after peer reviews, you should be fine!
the class is out of 100 points. but its impossible to get perfect scores on our "papers" that're worth 10 points. she nitpicks everything...im miserable. her lectures are useless. her assignments are unclear. if u can avoid, do avoid
Dr. Klotz is a great professor very highly educated experienced and articulate. I received a very good grade in her legal writing class 104B. The class is a great complement to my studies in Philosophy and Economics. The Legal Writing Class has proved very beneficial for me during the years not only in academics but also in my professional life.

she is incredibly unclear in what she actually wants. awful nitpicking grader who is never consistent on what she wants. absences are counted against you harshly, had to miss class to work but it drops your grade drastically. avoid at all cost if you want to keep your sanity.
This class was extremely difficult; the professor was very unclear with grading and didn't really provide feedback. The only helpful thing in the class was the peer group workshops, but if you are all lost, it doesn't help. Take another UWP if you don't want to be stressed out! Good luck if this class is a requirment.
