Ms.Lubow starts philosophical and imposes her theory of what students should believe or not,which contradicts w/ many books. Grades are given not earned in her class,since she'll blame you for any failure in her life.Dont let your facts disagree with hers

Very detail oriented, but her lectures are very interesting. She likes details on her test which make it hard so take good notes.
I enjoyed the course material- I also enjoyed how she challenged students to think, rather than just come up with a "correct" answer. She is very political and lets her views be known in class. Her biggest problem was getting to class on time.
I took her for winter session US history, worked my butt off, and the last few papers we did she decided not to grade seeing how she "didn't have time". She complained all the time about her financial and job situation. Has favorites.

Class started out interesting - got so involved in the pres. race that she spent all her time talking politics -expected everyone to follow her pol agenda - protests etc. - Only finished half the book - she tried to catch up at the end - so she made you stay late - very hard grader!

Never, ever on time. Talks a lot, but never about anything that you can actually learn from or take notes on. She would do well to respect her students more and listen to their opinions than to always be telling what her opinion is. Definitely not recommended.
In my opinion, her class is not easy, but I liked her class. She actually gives us the questions BEFORE the exam, so we can prepare completely. I think that is an advantage. Also, her good point is that she always tries to listen to us, so that we don't get bored. If you really want to study, go take it. If you want to be lazy, avoid it.
I took her for the Spring semester and I really liked it. She is not that bad and I don't know why some students had a bad comments about her. Her class is easy, just write four essays and you are done. No multiple choice and when you don't turn in your homework on time, she even cooperates with you. So, I don't know what a big deal about it?

I had a hard time following her class. She voices her opinion regarding politics too often and pushes her democratic opinion on students. She once made a comment that the "American Dream" of making it big was not acheivable and I felt this to be offensive and untrue. It seems like she has a problem with successful people.
We spent half of the semester just talking about pre historical stuff. She focused on SOME subjects but the test covers everything. It was a hard class to learn. Maybe she doesn't know how to teach?
Bad, bad, awful class, she would disguise as someone very nice the first few lectures, but don’t let that fool you. She is a very unfair grader, and does not care about her students at all. My advice to you is to FIND ANOTHER PROFESSOR.

The only class I've ever taken that hurt more than this was biochemistry. Beware. She makes it very difficult in ways that I can't even explain, and there is no redemption whatsoever.
I have to say that while is in demanding in terms of class work, she is a good teacher and I say this as a student who averaged as a C student. It is through her and class that today I am able to critically asses situations and daily conversations and apply what I've learned in her class in addition to other classes, and form an complete opinion.
She is good for helping one develop the knack to twist things around but not for a teacher. She is so garbled and recondite that I do not think even her own God(S) understand what the **** she is saying and or expects. She has favorites and grades based on favortism. Those students who favor her are indeed really C average and do deserve it.
I walked in the class loving history, i came out not liking history anymore. Her speaches were all over the place. She was very disorganized and came into class late everyday. I advise NO ONE to take her class. She picks her favorites, and does not have a good grading system. She also wants you to take her side on everything...do not take her!

The only that I could say is that I've been in her class only the first day, and oh mine, I just wanted to run out!! The three previous rating seems to be from a same person. May be Lisa graded herself to look alittle bit better :)
There are only 3 essays tests for the whole class. She grades fairly, and if she tells you that your work is unclear, it probably is. I know other students who thought she was being unfair to them, but it's just because she cares about the work. It's not an easy A, but it is possible.
Lubow is a through professor; however, she tends to make her students feel unconfortable with her directness. She doesn't take the time to make her students feel welcomed and apart of the learning process. I felt very afraid to answer questions in her class because she makes you feel stupid if you answer it wrong.
Lisa Lubow is fairly gifted in arguing but she's one of the worst ppl to have as a teacher. Rants off-topic, has favorites and expects you to read her mind.When lobbed into a discussion she like a grenade, blasts civil discourse into smoking rubble.Her explosive content can be adjusted if she just lets go of her ego and learns from her quirks.
FROM THE FIRST DAY OF CLASS SHE MAKES YOU FEEL UNWELCOME, BASICALLY TELLING THE STUDENTS TO DROP THE CLASS...SHE GOES ON AND ON AND ON (NOT ABOUT HISTORY) SHE NEVERRRR LETS THE CLASS GO ON TIME, NOT ONLY DID I HAVE TO BE IN THAT CLASS FOR 3 N HALF HOURS, BUT SHE WOULD KEEP US LONGER. If you disagree with her political viewpoint, she is extraordinarily unpleasant. And she talks way too much about her personal life. She's so anti-war that she SKIPPED ALL THE WARS in our class (hello, it's history, wars happened), and we didn't even come close to getting through the material we were supposed to. She's more than a little bitter.

Being not only a history major, but an avid fan of the subject, I was thoroughly disappointed in this class. Not only did we barely touch the surface of actual history (we mainly discussed broad cultural ideas), but the vast majority of our classes involved discussions about Lubow's political views. I certainly wouldn't recommend this course.
I hate to say it, cuz I like to give teachers credit for having a tough job, but I wouldn't recommend her. DO NOT TAKE HER! I have had the displeasure of having both women's history teachers on campus and I recommend Renner way way more than Lubow. Renner has multiple choice and short essay. Lubow one big essay that is completely left to her discretion how to grade. At least with Renner you stand a chance for fair grading. Adults R treated like children
I hated her class. SHe picks her favorites and gives them A's. I got a D in the class and I did work hard. You have to read the book and her lectures are incredibly boring. I regret taking her class and I dont know how she got hired. I advise you not to take her, she is one of the worst teachers at GCC.
She is not as bad us all you think. It is true that she is always late and behind on the syllabus. Yet her classes are fun and full of discutions. I never feld dissapointed or bad and always participated. She doesnt give quizes only 2 tests and a final. She gives the exact qusetions on the tests and finals for you to study.
What a draft, she is probably one of the worst teacher yet. Not only was she irresponsible, but she was also ****, she had her favorites and her non-favorites, I hate kissing ass to teachers just to get a good grade. She needs to go back to school to be taught a lesson.
After reading this site, I was terrified of taking Dr. Lubow, but am so glad I did! She is one of the most understanding people at GCC. Her class may not be the easiest, but keep up with the reading & you should be fine. A huge bonus is her focus on current issues: We are part of the future; might as well not be completely blind to it....
Seriously, she is not that bad. She comes late true but some of her arguments are interesting and the only thing u gotta do is read, give ur personal opinion , relate it to the class and support it. Stay away from her if you can! She is lways late and barely talks about the real subject. Goes really fast towards the final cuz she falls far behind the syllabus! But she expect you know what she has not covered on the test. Not very hard to get a B, but you have to be one of her favorates to get an A!
Has interesting ideas and presents them in a very clear manner. Her lectures are very engaging! Exams are consistent with lectures, so take lots of notes.
She's not as bad as everyone says she is. Her class is not hard if you go to class take a lot of notes and read the book. She gives the essay questions in advanced so you'll know whats on the test. it is possible to get an A in her class. you have to be good at writing though. just bear with her through the lectures, take notes and you'll do fine.
This is a very passionate teacher. She is a tough teacher/grader, but she will make you think about history instead of learn it as trivial facts. If you attend class, it's impossible to leave without learning anything. This is a great class if your interested in learning. If you look to just pass, forget this one.
If ur not wonderful at essay's forget about it. She's looking for fabulous essays to get an A. Intereresting lady. would rather have not taken her class. Gave her the benefit of the doubt on previous ratings prior to taking class. My optimism was shot down! The comments and the number of comments speak for themselves - does go on tangents, goes 20 min past class period, crams info in towards the end, expects you to know everything. Exams felt more like taking Masters in History rather than generals.

I dropped the class after the first night -- this professor did nothing but talk about herself for 2 and 1/2 hours. She spent the entire first lecture telling the class what a great teacher she was and asking how she was rated on this web site (and then defended herself against every criticism). Major red flag!
Basically, in order to pass this class, you need to participate a lot. So if you are the quiet type, good luck!!! I tried to bear with her for weeks, & ended up dropping with a W. You need to be perfect at writing essays, because she looks at the details. There is a lot of reading involved, & it’s really hard to connect her lectures with the book.
This is what a Professor is really like. For the most part, you will not drift off into space because she has a powerful teaching method. It is off track but it is up to your discression to step your game upo with the reading. As for the people that can't hang, are clearly not ready for anything to come their way ! TAKE IT ! I have never encountered such a useless teacher. All she did was talk off topic and assign tremendously difficult essays. If you wrote about her lectures on the essays she would grade you down. If you plan on becoming a "CRITICAL THINKER" take her class. She is not an easy A instructor. Hence, if you are simply looking for an easy class, do not take her. However, once yoy take a course with her, you will see how you would transform from a person who may not be successful in thinking independently, to one who can analyze & actually THINK.

She is not organized; often late for class; very careless about grading. Be aware that she may grade you unfairly. Class discussions usually evolve around everything but history related topics. Her lectures can be very confusing. She hardly ever returns e-mails or calls. If you like history, I don’t recommend her class. as a teacher she FAILED.

Indeed very Loud in her lecture, no breaks, class over time but only by 15 or less. Usu. ontime. Tough midterm grading, but at UC grading level, you really get what you deserve. Talented arguer, passionate teacher, wants you to think for yourself. Not extrem. biased at all. Very behind on book, and dumped altogether toward the last week. Got a "B".

She has no clue about teaching. I did not learn anything form her. I'm very disappointed in her and the class I took! Tests are hard, and her grading depends on her personal sympathy. She is not a fare teacher overall. I got a B in her class? I showed by work to other teachers and they told me that I should have gotten an A. If you want to challege yourself as a student take her, if your looking for an easy A take another prof. She chooses what she teaches you from the book and is very political. Must have great note taking skills if you don't you will certainly be forced to learn to take good notes in her class if you want to do well in her class. She's not that bad

Great class for anyone looking to learn something and enhance your critical thinking skills. This is not a class for someone looking for an easy A. Lubow will challenge you and you'll grow from it. This is what college really is. Too many teachers at GCC give easy A's. Lubow is a real college level prof.

Alright let me be honest. When we gives you notes she jumpes around ALL over the material. She starts from point A and jumps to poid D then expects you to fill in the rest from B through C then connect all A B C and D together. WARNING... you must be prepared EVERDAY with the TEXTBOOK MATERIAL and your NOT TAKING strategies must be EXCELLENT.
I'd first just like to say that I am a very hard working student, with a good GPA and a healthy sense of ambition and integrity but none of that helped me in this class. I actually enjoyed this class, though I can easily see how some would not. She is almost always running behind and can be a little abrasive. However, she is very intelligent and encourages her students to think in new ways. I wouldn't recommend her class to just anyone. You have to attend every class and take very good notes in order to do well.

She jump back and forth with the material a lot. ALWAYS late. has a tendency to talk abut her personal matters, or discuss about current political issues. I can understand all the negative comments, but she's a really great professor. It is a challenge... don't expect to just cruise by. But this is how a college professor should be. She's not handing out A's because she wants you to be prepare for any university you might attend. She's extremely knowledgable and will teach you a lot of useful tools.
Hey everyon. I will be clear. This woman does her job the way it needs to be properly done. The class is hard, but guess what, you are in college. She is one of the only teachers that actually treat the students LIKE STUDENTS, not like people who are there to spend free time.
Reading the comments here, i thought she was the devil, but after i took the class, honestly she is a really good teacher, very helpfull and not controlling at all. just take notes in her class and do some reading and you'll be fine. i took her class as a challenge and it was worth it.
This is exactly how a college class should be. Very informative, challenging, with a lot of discussions. It's by no means a walk in the park, be prepared to do a fair amount of reading and preparation for your exams. I highly recommend this instructor if you really want to learn the truth about American History.

i agree with others, i don't think she delivers her knowledge to students well. she may be well educated, but what's the point if she doesn't know how to educate and approach students. i don't recommend her class. The only reason why and how I got B in this class, is because I knew a little more about the history then my classmates.
I like this professor because she does a really good job finding significant linkages from the past to current events. To pass this class with a good grade you must participate in class discussions. If you do not understand or are confused, stay after class to talk to her. She is quite helpful and loves to talk to her students.

Tests are very hard, and she is a very hard person to please. Not fair when it comes grading. Unprofessional overall, dishonest, and pretentious. Sessions are usually loud and useless. I don't recommend her class.
The school that gave her a PHD should get their head examined. Her lectures are long, tedious, and she usually tries to vaguely tie in nonsense to the course material. Spent an hour of class time grading exams. Isn't that YOUR Homework?! Very bias teach us both sides of the argument instead of liberal ideology! Stay away from this class at all cost
This woman is not a pleasant person to begin with. She does not and will not motivate you to learn. Her emphasis is on herself, She also contradicts herself during classroom discussions. She is insulting students and after appologizing for her crass comments then insults them again. Hard work is not appreciated and seldom praised. DO NOT TAKE!

This teacher is completely nuts! She has self issues that she needs to deal with first. Her class is not only boring but makes no sense what so ever. She rarely ever agrees with anything anyone says in the class, because she thinks she is always right. Your better off taking a diff teacher, honestly.
This teacher is absolutely ridiculous. Prepare to have every single sentence on your test examined and marked off!
this teacher is clearly unaware of the world around her.. we dont want to know that you walk around naked in ur apartment. shes completely unprepared and has no clue about what she is teaching. shed rather spend 45 minutes on grilling a student about their lack of participation than TEACH!.. what a waste of time..
HORRIBLE to say the least. She spent the 1st day explaing that the reason she has low rating was because "People dont get her" She talked until i fell asleep and even said that the syllabus would not be completed (Hmmm is cause you spend the entire class time defending yourself?) Nothing was taught i dropped the class as soon as i could! (
I've never dropped a class before. especially with me wanting to transfer to UCLA next spring, the last thing i want is a "W" on my Transcript. Lubow, however, just pushed me over the edge. she is just the worst teacher ever, and always complains that after 10 years, GCC still wont offer her a full time position. Take a guess why!?
I took this class two years ago, and she told me that I should reconsider my major in history based on my performance in her class. I have since moved on to get a BA and am now in a PhD program for history. She is not encouraging, lectures on irrelevant topics, and ultimately does not teach well. Stay away if you want to learn good history.
Good Teacher, she does not cover the whole book, but does make you think critically about history. Will not make you read a million pages, she simply wants you to understand important history topics. Class is hard, and you must attend every class to do good. Dont take this class if you are lazy and are not good at critical thinking.

I must say I wanted to drop this class but she is one of those teachers that really push you to THINK, i mean I got a C in her class but I did learn alot...she is a very tough grader and she will push your buttons..but its for your benefit. She makes you look at history on a totally different point, she can be quit theatrical at times
Take this class if: You like consistently staying 15-30 minutes after class is over, impossibly hard grading in which everyone gets C's, extremely far left political tangents that have 0% to do with the class, spending 3 weeks on how to do proper note taking, and one week to study for the final.
She is always ready to judge her students in front of others, always putting in her political views when talking about politics. She is definitely the most sxist professor ive ever had, No one should take take class and if you're a guy then forget about it, you will be put down on any comment concerning women's rights.
Everyone in this class is either getting a C or a B. She keeps students 15 minutes over even if its a night class. She spent 3 weeks on defining what history was. Actually we had to define it. She moves so slow in lecture. Lecture is so
boring that you will want to fall asleep. she's always complaining about how much sleep she's had and about how she needs to build lectures for other classes. She is so political that her views will get mixed in with the lecture.
At times she can be fun but most of the times she can get on your nerves. I regret taking her. Im getting maybe a low C and I tried so hard on my first essay.
Professor Llubow is an Excellent teacher. The class is very interactive and she cares about the students she teaches. The class may not be for everyone considering that many people don't like to be challenged and want an easy way toward a grade. Having said this, she doesn't teach to the test. You actually learn something and earn your grade.
I really do not recommend her. She's not helpful, she procrastinates, she doesn't give useful notes until last 15 minutes of class and she expects university essays and does not grade fairly. If your intention is to pass with a B or higher, don't take her. I got a C even though I pulled a total of 7 all-nighters just for her 3 essays.
A very poor instructor in all ways. Does not help or clarify anything inside or outside of class, including emails, other than basic answers to simply get you out of her face. Likes to grade very hard and unfairly in almost all her stuff. Don't even approach her about your progress as she likes to pick fights. After overkill, I didn't pass w/ a D.
I felt like it was a high school class only cuz she talked so much. mixed taught would be a better professor maybe at a university. she expects a lot from the students when it comes to test time and creative writing. very unorganized. she spent 10 weeks talking about the native americans. that's not what history is all about. expect a "C" or lower.
It does not matter how hard I try to do my best. She is going to fail me and that is it. She makes me read chapters in the book but then we don't even discuss it on class because she expects you to learn it on your on time out of class. Once she spent 30 minutes off topic, gotta say it was a long break. I WISH I HAD NEVER TOOK THIS CLASS.
Unclear expectations and a mess teaching the class. She often jumped off topic for 30+ minutes but expects us to know what she forgot to teach. She loves to be right/ tell you why you aren't. The class was supposed to cover present day- we didn't make it past the 1930's (we skipped WWI). Her essays were brutal. Want an A? DO NOT take this class.
she is very hard teacher, expecting us to know everything, class started with 50 students, after the spring break , we are now just 15 students in the class . more than half dropped the class... no matter what you write in your paper, she will not except it and you will get an f ... good luck
She is all over the place. stuck in her own mind. Nothing you answer is correct. I wish somebody had told me about her before taking the class. never again. People like that should not be teaching.
The first week of class we talked about capitalism. The first chapter of the book is about the lives of African Americans in the United States. That tells you a lot about how accurate she is. I learned more about global warming than I learned history. I dropped her class with a W. DO NOT TAKE HER.
Save yourself the headache. This teacher is inconsiderate of your time and effort you put in your assignments. You can try your hardest in a paper and it will never be to her standards. Notes and the book will not save you . Her lectures are all over the place and they are never enough to get a good grade on her assignments. I wish I had dropped.
The lectures were extremely long and unorganized. She spoke to fast and hardly took the time to tie any of her own notes with our reading material. It was always a matter of guessing and putting it together on your own. The essays that she assigned were difficult. Most of the students dropped the class and it's no surprise when she wanted students to participate in her lectures but was so quick to shut your answers out. I think I only participated twice the entire semester because I was afraid of embarrasment. She's a nice lady but as a professor she needs to be more considerate and definitelty more organized and clear with her syllabus and time management.
I wish I would have read the Ratings before I took this teacher. If u call her a teacher. She is horrible. Has her own personal & political views &?nothing else matters. Talks about nonsense & not much about American history. I have learned nothing from her. She spends time talking about her history & being an activist. She grades hard. The worst!
History is taught through her morals and views. Nothing else matters only she tells and knows the truth. Although she's the one late, she will keep the class 15 mins after the finishing time. If you leave early she will put you on her watch list. Don't remind her about breaks, either. Hard core activist don't make good Teachers or Professors.
If you are a nerd and study for like 10 hours a day, then you would be fine. This class is the most infuriating class i have ever been in. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you take another professor otherwise you might just do the biggest mistake in your life if you decide to take her class!
It's been 4 years since i took this class but it was such a traumatic experience that to this day i remember this evil lady. GCC is such a great community college it blows my mind how Lubow still has a job. I would rather get a mike tyson punch to my groin every night before i sleep than to sit through another lecture with this lady.
I took her class 2 years ago and I'll tell you this lady makes you work for it. Tests are only in form of essays, I believe it was 4 essays total. History is everything that happened now from primary and secondary sources. She drilled that into our souls. Very interesting lectures, she is very passionate but class is tough as nails.
Professor Lubow teaches one of the toughest History classes I have ever taken, that much is accurate. But the people ranking her low are just too immature to handle a legitimate college-level History class. You must understand and apply concepts and context, not just regurgitate lecture, so grow up and take good notes and you'll do fine! No Easy A.
Spent the first three weeks defining history, actually had us define it. Shows up late, and keeps us 15 minutes after class, mind you this was a night class. Over half the class dropped, wish i had done the same. Wish i had read her reviews prior to taking the class. Save yourself the headache, no way to get an A with her.
