is a ok teacher, but is confusing at times.
Monotonous classes, information on tests are gone over during class, if you attend and pay attention your pretty much guaranteed a good grade.
great professor. a little scatter brained at times but she always helps you out. if you study you can get a good grade, just go to class and pay attention and read through your text.
From the moment I walked in her class, I knew she was a little kinda *wacky*. It seemed she knew what she* was talking about, but did not know how to teach it. Used powerpoints. Don't remember if she put them on blackboard. Just take notes and study them. Use your book for TERMS. Her tests are varily moderate to hard difficulty.

This lady is so unprepared. She rambles in class and has no idea how to teach. She relies on powerpoints and youtube. She WILL keep you til the very last second of class. You have to teach yourself.
This professor is simply ok. If I could do it over again I wouldn't take her. She is not prepared for class and all she does is reads off her powerpoints. She is really bad with technology so she blasts your ears off when trying to fix the volume. She uses YouTube a lot and someimes gives extra credit if you come on Fridays. Attendance not mandator
Really nice, but her voice is like nails on a chalkboard.
The worst teacher ever. She does not teach. She talks.
The WORST teacher i have taken at ECU period. She is unreasonable to students.tests have multiple correct answers but some of them are wrong, even if you point out the error to her, she says we should have "analyzed" better.study guides are basically memorize the book. final has no study guide and covers everything.so basically memorize 16 chapters
The worst teacher I have ever had! Shes a meanie... Jerk. Period. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME TAKING HER BECAUSE SHE DOESN'T TAKE THE TIME TO HELP YOU!!!!@#$%^&*&^%$#@#$%^
This is by far the worst professor I have had at ECU. Please do not take her class. She is useless as a teacher, she never knows how long class is & she never knows what she is supposed to actually teach. The book you buy is horrible, hard to read, and makes no sense! take anything else!!! you can't do worse than this teacher!
Attendance was not mandatory, but if you do not know psychology you would be lost if you didnt come. To me she seemed kinda loopy?! Can't think of a better word to describe it because she knows psychology but maybe nothing else?! But i did not mind her class, it was not horrible!
Without a doubt in my mind, the worst professor at East Carolina. Gives study guides that go pages on in and reduces them down to 40 problems. The class is pretty much pointless except to get in class participation grades. Very technologically illiterate. Her voice doesn't help her either, as she has no bass vocals and drones on the whole class
This woman is a nightmare. She is never clear with her expectations and her tests are on things that she thinks are important, but they're just random useless facts from the articles. So much reading in this class. She can't teach to save her life.
This class wasn't bad at all. The 1st test was easy, 2nd was really tricky so watch out for that, 3rd and 4th I didn't even have to study for to make 100's. The final is also very easy, if you did good on the past tests you don't need to study. She also gives loads of extra credit, I ended up with a 100 in the class.
She is really funny, well her different faces she makes in class. She wants to make this class fun and easy. A lot of class participation which makes the time go by fast. One of the best teachers I have had here at ECU. I honestly just look to see if she was teaching anything else next semester other than Developmental Psyc. NOPE :( sad day.
Dr. Maag is an INTERESTING professor, to say the least. Although attendance isn't mandatory, you miss out on a lot of information by skipping. She knows what she's talking about, but you need to refer back to the book to study for exams and quizzes. Take advantage of her EC assignments and STUDY the psychologists & their theories of development.
She is helpful if you ask for help. She gives a TON of extra credit. Although class is not the most exciting thing ever, she tries to do fun activities and videos. She is a good professor and if you try, you WILL get a good grade.
Dr. Maag's class is much harder than anticipated! Class is pretty boring and she tries using the clickers but isn't consistent with them. You HAVE to study for the exams using book and notes but assignments and reports can help boost grade. I wouldn't take her class again.
Requires 12 hours service learning. If you don't do it, you'll get a C if you get perfect scores everywhere else. Lectures are boring and obvious. We switched to a new kind of clicker, spent 50 bucks, and used it for only half the semester. Overall it was a very frustrating course.
I found her knowledgable, organized, helpful, and quite interested in her field. I recommend her without reservation.
She is a nice lady but she can appear dingy at times. She requires 12 hours of service-learning and her class can be boring because she just reads off of the slides. The assignments are completed under mydevelopment lab and are due before each test. Her test can be difficult so it's very important to study. Passing is easy if you study and do work
She is a nice woman, but is quiet. Her test are not that hard if you study. Her powerpoints are very sparatic and sometimes hard to follow.
Very good professor. She is very helpful if you make the effort to get help. If you are looking for a babysitter, take someone else. If you are willing to work, it's a very easy A. She takes great effort to make the class interactive. Participate, it really helps.
This was not an enjoyable class for me. I usually like psychology, but she all she does is stand up there and read directly from the slides. I also found some of the things she said in class a bit contradictory to what she said previously. The tests were not too difficult but if it hadn't been for the book I wouldn't have passed the class!
If you are looking for an academic experience, look elsewhere. Lots of group activity suited for 8th graders. Mandatory blog participation - again at an 8th grade level. Some profs at ECU have just given up, and are trying to aid the school's retention efforts.
I would not recommend this professor to anybody. Her class is extremely dry (zzzzzz-fest), her exams are worded weird, she does not require attendance but gives stupid in-class activities that a 3 yr. old could do, requires blogs...I could go on forever. Also, her grading on blackboard is so confusing and contradicts everything she claims.
This class is relatively easy. Attendance is not mandatory. If you do the study guides and read the textbook, you can just show up for tests and get A's and B's. She offers extra credit on blackboard too.
Dr. Maag is a good teacher if you listen. I found it easy to print out her slides and write down examples she gives in class to study from. Once you get the hang of her tests you can do extremely well. She is very smart but awkward to talk to. If you study for tests and read book you'll do well.
This class was super easy just very very boring. It was the struggle to get up and actually go. Attendance is not mandatory and you can still do pretty well without going if you look at her power points online!
Terrible. Went to her office hours - no help. Everything is directly from the book, so it's the only way you'll pass. Her lectures/powerpoints aren't consistent with the book so you can't go off of them. 30 page study guides for one chapter. Miserable class. My lowest grade since being at ECU.
Very boring class, but it was easy if you took the time to do the study guides and read the book. The book and powerpoints didn't go together. I never went to class, read the text, did the study guides, and earned a B. She gives extra credit for each test that is very easy to do if you actually take the time to do it. She's super monotone.
Listening to her in class was hard especially early in the morning. Her study guides were way to long to do. You pretty much need to read the book and do the study guide and those extra point discussion board assignments which I think needed to be worth more that 1 pt. But she is a nice lady though.
She is the sweetest lady ever. I did not have the book for the first test and it was my lowest score. You have to read it to do good in her course. Going to class is pointless because her lectures are like 1 or 2 questions on the test. Attendance is not mandatory and she offers a lot of extra credit. I averaged 84s on all her tests and got an A-.
She is very monotone, but the tests are pretty easy. Class isn't mandatory and she lectures with slides. Uses good examples.
She really knows her stuff and can simplify anything you do not understand. Although attendance isn't mandatory, she shows a lot of videos in class to help you understand the material. She also gives a lot of extra credit opportunities so take advantage of them! Reading her slides are pointless, make sure to read the book for the test!
DO THE STUDY GUIDES! Yes they are long but they really help...
As many have stated she can be quite monotone and boring, but the material is interesting and she offers a ton of extra credit. Do the long study guides for every test and the extra credit, you'll have an A
Very helpful. Wonderful teacher. Talk to her she gives a bonus point at the end if she knows your name. Very sweet and gives extra credit if you go see related films on campus. Attendance isn't mandatory but extra credit activities are given in class so GO :) plus so are fun even with a big class.
Grading criteria is not clear. Belittles students. Not helpful or understanding. Is not there for you, or respected by students. Assigned a group paper ( by group I mean the entire class had a group project together to write a "new chapter" of our text book. ) So rude and condescending. Class it only out of 100 points.
Her lectures can be boring at times, but she shows interesting videos to help you better understand the material. YOU MUST READ THE BOOK because her Power-Points don't help. Attendance is not mandatory, but she gives in class extra credit assignments. In addition, she gives tons of out of class extra credit assignments.
The WORST class Ive taken yet at ECU. Shes very monotone and belittles students all the time. Her study guides arent helpful whatsoever. Most boring lectures, attendance isnt mandatory but she gives little extra credit assignments that barely help. Her tests are pretty tough but book IS MANDATORY. DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS CLASS TO ANYONE!
DONT TAKE HER CLASS! lectures are long and boring where she basically just reads off her power points. offers plenty of extra credit but exams are challenging. MUST READ TEXTBOOK TO LEARN ANYTHING!
This professor is helpful and can explain the material well. Her tests are very hard even after you study for hours and understand the material. She does offer extra credit but not much. Each discussion board is only worth .5 points and you can do up to 5 points.
She's monotone and boring. I worked for 3 hours reading and studying EACH chapter that was going to be tested and I still only made high 80s/ low 90s on the tests. The tests are hard and I'm a dedicated student. I don't recommend this professor if you don't want to put a lot of time into this class.
Ok so after reading these reviews I decided I had to write one. First off, I'm not too sure why Dr. Maag has gotten such bad reviews. I found that I really enjoyed her class. Obviously, if you skip her class (like most students do) you can't expect to pass with an A. She makes you work for it, but under fair circumstances. Offers much extra credit.
DONT TAKE HER. She told me I had to go see a learning therapist because I didn't study the way she thought I should. Her voice is annoying and she does not make the course fun. She is rude and not helpful at all.
Do the adapted PE program and discussion boards for extra credit (will add 11 points to every test grade). I did best when I read each chapter, then looked at the practice questions. Practice questions cover the material that will be on the test. Sweet lady, kinda boring, but not a terrible class at all! Randomly gave a point or two for EC in class
I think most of the people that rated Mrs. Maag bad probably didn't go to class. If you go to class and listen and read the book you will be fine. She's a good teacher and gives out so much extra credit. My class only had 4 tests (including the final)
Great teacher, but you need to actually go to class and read the book. She gives out SO much extra credit which is helpful for the few tests given. She was always nice and helpful in and out of class. She also puts up chapter outlines and practice questions for each test, which is very nice.
If you show up to class and actually listen, you'll get an A. She determines your grade by averaging the 4 tests you take. All the information on the tests are from lecture notes. Her lectures are pretty boring but you learn everything for the tests. Definitely take advantage of her extra credit, she gives a lot.
She is very nice, and willing to work with you. The tests are a little but if you study youre good.
sweet lady, always smiling. There are a lot of extra credit opportunities if you put in the work. Going to class isn't mandatory, but she adds a lot of videos that help you understand the material better. I never used the textbook, just go over the notes and do the practice quizzes and you should be fine.
This professor is kind and gives multiple extra credit chances, 4 exams the final is not cumulative. Study guides usually very long but helpful. She only hands back exams if you see her in her office.
Dr. Maag is a nice lady and really knows her stuff, if you do what youre supposed to you will learn a lot. She gives a lot of extra credit and test prep which is helpful because her tests are extremely difficult. I studied for hours on end and my test average ended up as a 91. Good professor but not for an intro level class. Maag is not an easy A.
Dr. Maag definitely knows her stuff. Sweet lady, just boring. You need to read the powerpoints and textbook to pass. If you do both, the tests will be fairly easy. The only grades you get are the tests and extra credit if you do it. Tons of extra credit opportunities. Overall I liked her class! I would take it with her again.
If you treat this class like any other, show up, get good grades on all assignments, tests, and quizzes and hw, the highest grade you can get is an 88 (which is a low B because of her grading scale). her "extra credit" is work outside of class that you MUST do if you want a 90 or above. I did not have time for that. It sucks because I need PSYCH
If you go to class Dr. Maag will give you an idea of what you need to know, but as long as you study heavily for exams you'll be okay. The exams focus on applying concepts, not just memorization. Dr. Maag will help you if you need it, and she's available, but in order to succeed you must work hard. She never gets through the lectures.
LOVE Maag! It goes without explaining how beneficial it is that she posts the notes (PowerPoint presentations) before class. Considering your only grades are the 4 tests in the class, it doesn't hurt to copy the notes down before hand and then tack-on whatever she adds to the notes (because she will, so go to class) while she lectures.
Wonderful and caring professor, never even bought the textbook and found that all her test material is covered in lectures/powerpoints she posts online. No homework, only extra credit opportunities which are plentiful and fairly easy. All you really have to do is show up to class.
i dont know how she has a 2.9? shes amazing! i learned so much from her. she gives SO many chances for extra credit. she actually teaches us. the book is very helpful to have but if you have financial probs then you dont need to get it. her powerpoints are straight from the textbook.
Lectures can sometimes be a little dull but the class is very easy. Read the textbook chapters and do some highlighting and youll get an A on all tests. There is up like 15 points extra credit on every exam so dont pass that up!
she gives oppurtunities for extra credit on every test wether through volunteer work or discussion boards and they are optional. there are just 4 tests including the final and its not cummulative. If you go to class and take notes and do the practice tests youll be fine
Dr. Maag was one of the worst professors I've had at ECU. The class itself is not that bad, but Dr. Maag is. Her shrilly voice makes sitting through the lectures painful. You are better off just teaching yourself about the class than paying the money to have Dr. Maag "teach" it to you. If I could giver her a 0 I would.
Maag is awful. Don't take her class unless you like falling asleep in her boring lectures. She will constantly say the same thing and use the same video clips over and over throughout the semester. She seems like she tries to be a kind lady but she really falls short. Class is only graded off 4 tests and extra credit - DO IT YOU NEED IT.
This professor made my favorite subject the class I struggled in the most. The lectures and powerpoint do not prepare you for the exams, especially the final. The slides are not descriptive and do not correspond to the study guides or the exams. Do yourself a favor and take another professor
4 grades. including a non cumulative final. the study guides she gives does not match up with her tests. her tests are extremely hard. didnt get above a 70 on them and i study for hours. the tests are based of her lectures not the powerpoints. the only thing saving my grade is the 11 points extra credit she gives per test.
Honestly this class isn't too difficult. Just go to class and read the textbook/her notes. The only problem with her is that she's rude and doesn't care about her students. She provides no outside help at all and takes FOREVER to grade exams.
She wonderful! I loved her. Her tests are based off of applying scenarios, not definitions. SO MANY EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITIES! Rarely studied and I had nothing below an 80. Study guides for each test, non-accumulative final, 50 question MC. DON'T BUY THE BOOK. Voice record her lectures. She should have a MUCH higher rating!
She is slower at grading but I literally love Dr. Maag. People that gave her a bad rating probably didn't ever show up to class. It's not what you study it's HOW you study. She has a study guide for each test, x-credit, outlines, powerpoints, videos, etc. She is literally the best in my eyes. Interactive w/ her students. Don't get the book.
Maag is not as bad as people make her out to be. As long as you go to her lectures you will be fine for the tests. You can earn up to 12 points extra credit on each test too.
Try to avoid Dr. Maag. She's judgmental and forgets things/spaces out. E.g. I had to write a paper for her class and we had to go in person (it was mandatory) to get feedback in her office. She asked "why didn't you mention/elaborate on X?" I was like, "Dr. Maag, it's right there." it's like her head isn't there. Wasn't the only student who noticed
Dr. Maag is a great professor and her rating deserves to be much higher. Caring, interactive, and certainly knowledgeable in the subject. Study, read, and utilize some of the good extra credit opportunities.
Very sweet lady and knows how to distribute information effectively, her tests just make the class awful. She gives you practice tests before but they do not compare to the difficulty of the real tests at all. Interesting class just extremely difficult when our only grades are tests, go to class and do the extra credit when you can!
Dr. Maag is a very nice lady. She gives a lot of extra credit. Random extra credit in class, extra credit for doing discussion board, and extra credit for doing volunteer work and going to events. Her tests are kind of hard so I recommend doing the extra credit! I didn't do well in her class because I didn't do the extra credit. TAKE MY ADVICE!
Dr. Maag really is a sweet lady. She's understanding with her students and definitely wants to help if you reach out to her. But her tests are SO hard. I took this class one time and finished with a D because I never went. I took the class a second time with her- went to class, studied, actually read the textbook and still made a C. Tests are hard.
Dr. Maag is easily one of my favorite professors. Sweet and caring, will literally help you if you just ask. Obviously you have to work for your grade bc we are in college, but there is no reason you should come out with anything lower than an A if you study. Offers extra credit points throughout the semester for attendance. Txtbook not mandatory
PAY ATTENTION IN CLASS AND DO THE EXTRA CREDIT!!!! Also go to class, she gives extra credit on days most people don't show up. I wish I would have put in a little extra work, I would have gotten an A.
Dr. Maag does not explain any of the assignments that are given in this course. There is something due every class and it is your responsibility to check the assignment section of blackboard because the syllabus is horrible. If you need a capstone class look somewhere else because this class is like having a full time job.
Gives a bunch of assignments that have absolutely no instruction. If you ask her for help she is EXTREMELY vague. She does not care about the grades of her students the only thing she cares about is if your stuff is on time & you are in class. She will tell you that you are doing well then pull her grades for your work out of thin air. DO NOT TAKE
Dr. Maag is great! She's such a sweet lady, and she's very soft-spoken. you have to understand the concepts of the info and not just definitions. the final grade is an avg of 4 exams, but she gives EC opportunities and practice questions, so definitely take advantage of them... I did most (not all) of the EC and ended up with a 104% (no cap).
Maag is a sweet person, however I really struggled with the class at first. My first test I made a 52, and with all the extra credit and going to tutoring for the upcoming tests, I was able to pull an A out. If you're good with psych, you'll probably be fine, but if it's not your thing then you could end up needing tutoring to help, like I did.
Easy A and tons of extra credit, but you will hate every single second of it. Tests are mostly common sense with a sprinkling of useless facts she mentioned once. She could care less about whether her students learned anything and seems to get annoyed when people ask questions.
I strongly recommend avoiding this class during a summer semester or a "mini-semester." Too much information crammed into a 4-week class spells disaster. The quizzes were easy enough if you knew the material. The real struggle comes from the overly-complicated group style discussion questions. There is a LOT of writing for the discussion questions.
Dr. Maag is a very nice lady. Her tests are pretty easy as long as you study her notes/videos. She gives lots of extra credit assignments. Super easy A!
I LOVE DR. MAAG! As long as you ready the textbook, take notes, and stay on top of the work, you'll get an A no problem. Dr. Maag, even will give you a recommended study schedule for the week to help you stay on course. This class was definitely a needed break; I recommend Dr. Maag to everyone.
She is really great but the class is really hard. Go to the lectures and TAKE NOTES!! I would study for hours before the exams. She gives some extra credit (not much) but its better than nothing!!!
Super easy, I took her online during COVID and she is one of the easiest professors I've ever had. All you do each week is watch a few 5-10 minute lecture videos and take quizzes that relate to those videos. All tests and exams are open notes and as long as you have the textbook and basic understanding of the material, you will not fail. TAKE HER!
Dr. Maag is very knowledge about psychology and very nice. You MUST study for her exams, all the questions come straight from the textbook, so GET THE TEXTBOOK AND READ! She offers some extra credit, but its not worth much; still do it no matter how high your grade is because I got a bad grade on 1 exam and it brought my grade down a lot.
I loved this class! DO THE EXTRA CREDIT!! My grade went from a B+ to an A- by doing the extra credit when I was bored or if I wasn't doing anything.
She is a very sweet lady but nothing from her lectures are on the exams. your grade is only 4 exams open note with 50 questions in 50 minutes. Even with studying, taking notes, and going to class this class is my lowest grade. Honestly if you can take this class with someone else I would.
she's a pretty good professor. Her lectures can get a little boring at times but she gives chances for discussions about what's on the slides. Attendance doesn't count but it'll still be good to listen in on some classes from time to time cause she gives extra credit to the people who show up in class.
I am a very good student because this is the first C I've had IN MY LIFE. Prof. Maag is very kind and cares about how you do but I made the mistake of thinking the class would be a breeze. You really have to work for your grade (although she gives extra credit, its not worth a lot). The only grades in the grade book is extra credit and tests :(
She is a very sweet your grade is based on only 4 exams open note with 50 questions in 50 minutes she doesnt give assignments attendance isnt mandatory she does give extra credit but it doesnt help I dropped this class before it hurt my grade in the class if you can take this class with someone else I would 100%
I enjoyed PSYC 3206 with Dr. Maag. She is incredibly kind and enjoys what she teaches about. I wish I had started reading the book earlier in the semester, my test grades jumped 10 points. This is where a majority of the questions come from. Exams are open book. GO TO CLASS. She does extra credit and your final grade could easily jump 10 points.
I honestly loved this class, she's a great professor! The only grades are 4 exams which are 50 questions & 50 min. She does give extra credit throughout the semester, DO IT! Brought me from a 93 to a 101. She posts practice quizzes for each chapter if you study them & your notes you will do great. The class was interesting too!
Dr. Maag is a sweetheart and I definitely enjoyed her class; however, DO NOT MISS CLASS. She had extra credit assignments almost once a week if not more, and missing out on those kept me from getting an A - (but she doesn't take points away if you do not do them.) Her tests were mostly based off the textbook so definitely take well written notes.
Ms. Maag is very nice. I suggest reading the textbooks and taking notes because most of the questions come from the book, with only a few from lectures. Class is not mandatory but I suggest going
This is a good class to take. Aside from only having exams as grades, she allows plenty of extra credit if you show up to class!
Dr. Maag is a very sweet professor and her classes are really interesting to attend if you put in the effort to learn about the topics. Exams are open-notes so if you read the textbook and take notes on her lectures, you should be fine. Going to lectures in-person is crucial because otherwise, you have to find the notes from a classmate.
Although the only grades are exams, there are a lot of extra credit opportunities to boost your grade. The course material is pretty interesting and Dr. Maag puts in effort to keep her lectures interesting with videos. If you put in the work to pay attention in class, you'll be fine.
Literally avoid this class with this professor as fast as you can. None of the exam material comes from the book or the lectures and its all circumstantial questions. I busted myself as hard as possible and barely made a B. I've never gotten less than in A in a psych course. So much reading! Do not recommend.
Dr. Maag is a caring professor and the class is easy if you participate. Lots of discussion posts and debates that aren't worth a lot but add up. Powerpoints are super long and about 3-5 weekly quizzes worth 1-2 points a piece but they're easy. She offers loads of extra credit through volunteering so take it! I would take this class again. study!!!
Is super nice, caring, and understanding. Does a lot to try to help you get the best grade. Requires volunteering and lots of reading, but the class is extremely interesting and will teach you a lot about dogs. REQUIRES participation and active discission to get a decent grade. Offered extra credit and adjustments to the schedule if needed.
She is very kind and her lectures are very interesting. Tests can be a little bit difficult but she offers extra credit
Avoid this class if possible. This teacher requires more buy work than any other class I have had this far. 800 words twice a week, reading 4 study a week and reviewing. Answers questions extremely vague and very tough grader. Takes off points in areas that you would not expect and is not willing to give any points back even after talking with her.
Shes a very sweet lady and extremely helpful
She is amazing. If you want the best psych prof SHES THE ONE
