Makes sociology way to hard.
VERY BORING, A LOT of assignments!
She did a pretty good job of explaining things. If we didn't understand we could always ask. The one downside was there was this guy who would not shut up and he took away from the class. She probably could've asked him to wait until after class if he wanted to talk with her.
Lisa is a very good teacher. The material she teaches is sort of difficult but she is willing to help. The test arent too bad. Pop Quizzes but 2 are dropped. there are extra credit opportunities...Oh, and she looks good!
She always seemed like she was rushing through the lecture and often times didn't complete what she wanted to say. Some of the tested material wasn't discuessed in class.
A lot of material for a 100 level class. However overall I enjoyed the class. She is very helpful when going to office hours! Her case studies were also very interesting. Would def take her again!
Grades really tough. Always takes a couple point off, even if the paper says 'Excellent'. Only 300 points offered, so if you miss 30 you're already down to a B. LOTS of extra reading, some are interesting though. Test and Quizzes are short but almost all essays.
Professor Wright is pretty great! This class was super interesting despite the heavy reading load. She is a fair grader. Definitely go to class though, especially if you aren't understanding the readings very well. She always makes sure that the material is clear and understandable for her students!
Got to be ready to read to get your grade.
Professor Wright is obviously knowledgeable in her field, however her lecturing style is very dry and uninteresting. There is quite a bit of required reading, which is necessary since almost 50 percent of the tests regard the readings. Attendance isn't necessary since she posts all lecture slides on blackboard.
I am currently in this class and I really enjoy the material. There is a lot of reading involved, but it is interesting. If you do the reading, take notes as you go, pay attention in class and take good notes over the powerpoints, you will definitely do fine. It's not necessarily an easy A, but it is attainable if you put the work in. GO TO CLASS
Horrible teacher. Has her own political agenda that she tries to shove on you. Only gives one side of multifaceted sociological issues. Take with another teacher if possible. Super annoying voice.
In general Wright is a good professor. Her lectures are clear and anything needing clarification is available to you during your discussion session or before/after lecture. However, she has very left-wing views and will not hesitate to announce her views on women equality. Most of my time in class was spend on my phone. Read, and you'll be fine.
Lisa-Marie is a great professor. She's pretty vague sometimes and tends to reiterate a lot. I often stayed home and answered top hat questions from my apartment but class was interesting most of the time so I liked to go when I didn't have much else to do. Make sure you read the books and go to discussion though, those 2 things are vital.
In class powerpoints are clear and helpful but often times are spent reviewing what was covered in the previous lecture which usually meant I spent lectures on my phone. Expect A LOT of reading. As long as you do the readings you'll be fine!
Lectures are boring and be expected to read if you want to nail in the exam. Exams cover 60% readings and 40% lecture.
Pushes her own personal agenda in the class instead of presenting an unbiased sociological perspective. Spends 5 minutes describing a view she clearly doesn't agree with then spends 20 minutes talking about why it's wrong. Lectures approach propaganda levels of insistence on one 'correct' view. Tests are primarily reading based.
Lisa-Marie is a great teacher and the content was interesting. Lots of reading though and there are in lecture questions for credit. Most of the tests are over the reading and the exams are most of the grade in the class. Weekly quizzes, but you get to take them 3 times so it's easy to get 100% on every one. Not my major but I liked this class.
I've read several of her reviews and I'm not sure why people are complaining so much about her. Yes, she does expect you to do the readings (this is college by the way). Yes, she does talk about some controversial topics (again, this is college). Despite what others have said, she is a very good professor and a good grade is very attainable.
While attending lecture isn't required, there are short TopHat quizzes during most lectures. You will have to read a lot to understand the material. Most tests are based mostly on the reading with some lecture questions. She is the type of professor that teaches to the last second of class and gets upset when people pack up with 2 minutes left.
Dr. Wright's lectures were incredibly boring and she constantly repeated the same concepts multiple classes in a row. It was very hard to stay focused in the class. While attendance wasn't mandatory, it was important because she would ask questions and we'd log on to an app and answer them for points. The books were good.
I thought she was a fantastic professor and very well versed in her teaching and studies. The books we had to read were very good and thought provoking, but READ them. The tests cover 60% reading and 40% lecture so beware. It's very possible to get an A in the class, just read the material and be able to apply it.
Dr. Wright makes sure to include useful info in her lectures. Slightly more than half of the test material is from the 4 books she assigns you to read throughout the semester, so be sure to know those inside and out. Participation in the discussion section is easy, just make sure to pay attention and talk occasionally and you'll do well.
Monotone voice makes lectures so hard to listen to. I feel like she fails at engaging students in her lecture heavy class. My Soc. 104 grade was made up of 65% test! The test are given in Discussion classes which are 50 minutes long. Test were 50 questions and I never felt like this was enough time for them. Hated this class.
One of the best profs I had at KU! Lisa is very knowledgeable and engaging!! Would take more classes with her if I could!
There is no doubt she knows what she's talking about, her lectures can be a bit repetitive, but once she is finished recapping the previous lecture she moves on and covers a decent amount of information clearly and at a fair pace. She is always willing to clarify any questions students may have after lecture or during her office hours.
The tests are 50% lecture material and 50% reading material. These two will not coincide whatsoever. She doesn't really go over the reading material at all during lecture and vice versa. Over half of each lecture is just a review of the previous lecture. She repeats herself A LOT, loves to hear herself talk and is pushy on her political agenda.
Lectures are only her going through her powerpoints, which she always posts online so it's easy to get all the info. There are some online questions that have to be answered throughout lecture that are taken for participation. She does assign a lot of reading but always tells us what the books are about in lecture anyway. Easy weekly quizzes
You don't have to go to this class. She does attendance with TopHat so you can just log in with your phone during class and answer the questions when they come up. She posts all the powerpoints (which are really redundant by the way) so you don't miss anything at all if you're reading the books also. Tests are 1/2 and 1/2 books and powerpoint stuff
If you attend lectures, she explains the slides and talks additional information not included. It's not mandatory per say to attend, but you have tophat questions that she might stop lecturing and have you do. Otherwise, discussion for my TA was pretty easy? There's 1 quiz/week mostly, but you can re-take it 3 times (simple to get all points).
Do the reading for sure. Shes helpful but her lectures are really repetitive. The GTAs who lead discussion sections were not great. They push their agenda on you and grade harder to impress the prof
Dr. Wright is such a chill woman
Soc 104 is definitely a staple class at KU. Its interesting and teaches a lot of cool modern information about the world around us. Its a pretty easy class where most of the work is just reading and attending lecture. If you do this it is not too hard to do well in the class. Would recommend if you need to take it.
Dr. Wright is a really solid professor. Her classes were very informative. The lectures mostly involved her reading from slides and they could be repetitive sometimes but she makes sure that every student understands the concepts. There is a lot of reading but if you do the readings and follow the slides then this class should be a breeze
She was a pretty good lecturer. Pretty good books and interesting lecturers. She is very enthusiastic when she talks and so she makes the class seem interesting.
I absolutely love her. One of the best people you could ever know. Truly.
The professor was very in-depth and made sure you understood everything. It was a very interesting class but the lectures were a little boring sometimes. Overall she was a very nice lady and she cared about her students passing.
She is uninspired and bored by her own lectures. Very boring and very much from the slides. If you dont show up to the mostly irrelevant lectures, you will lose many tophat points. TAs were very passive aggressive and rude. They also grade the papers based on subjectivity. Differing opinions will lose you points.
She was good about giving us the information that would be on the exam but with the class having almost 700 people in it, if you dont get a good discussion TA you are screwed on the material. Top hat points are weird and points dont always go in.
Overall, the content of the class I found interesting, but the class itself I did not like. Lectures were boring and you have to do a lot of reading. If you don't read, you won't do as well. The quizzes were also not worded great and usually always had a mistake. Not a hard class if you do all the work you have to.
If you do not read the assigned readings you will not do good on the tests. She's a fine lecturer, if you pay attention and take notes you'll be fine. I had to study a lot for the tests and got a B and an A on them. She uses tophat for attendance so it is mandatory.
Class was interesting but Wright is so repetitive and makes the tests way harder than they need to be. I loved my GTA, Mr. Meyers. Make sure you read. Coming to class gives you a few points but missing a class is no big deal. If you can get Mr. Meyers you should because he grades extremely fairly and made the class and my grade
I loved her class. The lectures are long and have a lot of information in them, but her class is pretty easy to understand. Most of her class learning is done in the discussion sections. There is not much homework, only reading books. Overall, I really enjoyed her class.
Pretty decent class, her lectures were mostly interesting, you can learn a lot in this class. If you read and pay attention (and show up, which I did not) its pretty easy to get an A.
I was an idiot and I confused my finals times. I showed up two hours later to the final and she let me take it the next day in my TA's office, so I'd say she's pretty nice.
Dr. Wright is really nice and a good lecturer, but I read, take notes in class, and study quite a bit for the tests, and I still don't get A's on them. She asks confusing, unnecessarily detailed questions on the tests that make it difficult to do really well on them. Probably wouldn't take a class from her if given the option due to her tests.
Super liberal, boring lectures. Easy material, boring books. Forces you to go to class by using tophat. Nice lady just boring class.
She's a great professor! Her grading is fair and clear. There's a ton of reading, but it's all interesting. Go to class, though! She makes sure the material and related theories are understood by all of her students. The lecture is discussion-based and she finds a way of facilitating effective and interesting discussions.
Man this is by far the worst class, her notes for class are just trash, we would read articles and just right key terms, she would always put the word masculinity, EVERY reading has that. Worst class ever and her grading are tough and man you read like never before. They are 36 articles to read each averaging 20 pages for a test. Good luck lol
just terrible.
A lot of reading in this course. To do well on exams, be sure to do all the readings and understand them otherwise the exams will be difficult. There are many easy outside points such as TopHat and Discussion and be sure to get all those points because they add up. I highly recommend going to SI sessions to understand this course. Very lecture hevy
This class was very interesting however there is quite a bit of reading. Most of the tests are based on attending lecture and reading. There are weekly quizzes that help you gain extra points. Dr. Wright is VERY caring and she is very approachable and flexible about any grading questions or overall questions about the class.
This teacher was very understanding. Her classes were all lectures, but she kept the class engaged with examples and stories. She was not a very hard grader. If you don't read the required readings the tests will be extremely difficult. It is also crucial to study for the tests. Online quizzes are a piece of cake and help your grade immensely.
Lisa is a good professor who does a good job introducing sociology topics. My downfall in this class was not reading all of the assigned books. YOU WILL NOT GET AN A WITHOUT READING THE BOOKS ALL THE WAY THROUGH. The final is where not reading really catches up to you, so pay attention in class, ask questions in discussion, and you'll do well.
I am now a Junior doing pre-med and took this class 2 years ago and it was very enjoyable. Very good life lessons and helpful throughout all aspects of life. You definitely have to show up to class and listen and that makes the class 10X easier. Also do all the readings 100% (they are not boring) and make sure to have your TA proof read the essays!
This class will take a lot of work to get an A. However, nearly half of your grade relies on homework that is not hard (time-consuming though) or participation so this class relies on your work ethic. Tests are not too hard if you study and make sure you read the books. I succeeded because of it. Most students will not and they will get B's or C's.
I did not spend that much time in this course and read only 60% of the books assigned and did fine. It is very possible to do well in the class, but it all depends on your work ethic. You should participate in your discussion section, answer top hat questions, and study the major concepts on her study guide.
Very wonderful woman, glad I had her as a freshman. A lot of books and articles to read, amazing guest speakers, very eye-opening class. Tophat participation requires you to be in class. A lot of information in lecture, can be dense, and a lot of information in books will be tested over. Does respond to students and genuinely cares. READ!!
Dr. Wright is an excellent professor. She makes sure to cover everything that will be on the exam, but expects you to do the readings on your own to make sure you are fully prepared. She is a very caring professor and makes lecture interesting.
Class readings are a few novels instead of being a textbook. The lectures are at a great pace and she keeps the tests very similar to what is gone over in class and in the reading.
Easily the worst common core class i have ever (i'm a junior) taken for a few reasons. -The professor treated a 104 level class like we were preparing for our soc. masters -expected an absurd amount of studying for a 100 level class -heavily biased (politically), teaching only aspect of information to fit her agenda -not understanding of her studen
Dr. Wright gives reading assignments for homework and then discusses important terms during the lectures. She doesn't really discuss the logistics of the reading but accentuates on some points. Attendance is mandatory. She did attendance through top hat to see who attended and the answers for the questions were discussed in lecture. Great class!
Her expectations are clear from the beginning - read the books and attend lecture/discussion. Your TopHat points is a HUGE part of your grade, and all the quizzes/tests you get a study guide with terms and topics to know. You definitely have to read the books to answer the book questions, but honestly what you put in is what you take away
I love this professor!!! A little heavy on the work, but the class is very enjoyable and her lectures are very easy to learn from.
Amazing prof. Because of COVID we had to go online but her lectures were still very touching and accommodating. Provided transcripts of lectures and cc. There is lots of readings but reach out to her and shes willing to help.
Majority of questions on quizzes come from the readings and it is all online this year. Professor is way to biased to make this course even somewhat enjoyable, if i didn't know any better i would think i was in a gender studies course.
Her lectures were interesting and she is good at explaining concepts. The quizzes are relatively easy. There is a lot of necessary reading, but the books to read are interesting.
She is such a caring professor. During Covid, she offered a lot of resources and places for students to get help. To be honest, I never read any of the books she assigned but I would recommend. I understood the main parts of the book by what she said in lectures. The quizzes and tests are easy. The only semi-hard part is the unit essay questions
All lectures are pre-recorded so everything is pre-made for the class, but Dr. Wright is still accessible and very caring. Many times shed email us giving resources or checking on our mental health. I didnt do the readings but would recommend, quizzes arent too hard and I found the unit essays to be easy, just make sure to watch the lectures
Dr. Wright is an amazing professor. I have taken both of the courses she teaches, including SOC 104 and SOC 450. She is extremely nice and accommodating. She has given us multiple options to have amazing events like presentations and such. There are a lot of readings, but I 10/10 recommend.
Dr. Wright's class was probably one of my favorites. She cares a lot about their students and their physical and mental well-being, which is greatly appreciated. Her lectures (to me) are super engaging and she usually picks interesting textbook reads to go with them. Overall an amazing class with a super accommodating teacher.
She provides great online lectures that help a lot in the quizzes. She asks for student feedback through extra credit surveys to make sure that everyone is doing okay.
The most caring, understanding, and informative professor I've had so far. She is the best & will answer all your questions and concerns. I had this class online but the discussion section was also amazing. Her lecture videos were very helpful with explaining complicated sociological concepts.
She cares a lot about her students and provides so much help even during holiday breaks. Most of the material can be learned without purchasing textbooks.
Dr. Wright is a very good professor! You can tell that she is very caring. Her lecture videos are always super helpful. Definitely need to read the books to have a good understanding during test, but I got lucky and my TA provided us with PDFs. Easy A and an interesting class for any major!
Dr. Write is a very good lecturer but you might have to put her on x2 speed. Her class is very interesting so that makes the amount of work bearable. However, there is a lot to do every week. She does offer a lot of extra credit opportunities though. There also is a lot of textbook use but the books are fairly interesting.
Really easy class to coast through. Watch the lecture videos, read the assigned reading and make sure to take advantage of ALL the extra credit offered. Also make sure to participate as much as possible in the discussion section. Tests and quizzes are open note.
Professor is educated in her field and lectures were easy to follow. My grade was the result of 20 credit hour semester however, the class is an easy B and A if you put a little more work in.
She was a good teacher, it just required a lot of work and a lot of the stuff I did not care about at all.
I wouldn't recommend this professor. Lectures are her giving her opinion on a topic. Not much credit is given to the author, so things come off opinionated. Exams are 50/50 lectures/readings. However, the readings that are covered are the most obscure useless details that I am sure you would just skip over. Take a different KU core goal class.
There is quite a lot of reading for this class, and I recommend trying your best to get the readings for free through a website or an interlibrary loan instead of purchasing the books. TBH, there were times I didn't finish the reading, but as long as you get the key concepts from the reading, you'll be alright.
Easy to follow lectures, and she makes it interesting. You don't need to show up to every class. As long as you watch the videos and make sure to understand the concepts, you will be A-OK. She's extremely understanding, sweet, and you can tell she wants you to succeed. Also very understanding of mental health. Simply a wonderful human!
Be ready to listen to constant lectures. She is good at public speaking and explaining concepts, however she does not always make material interesting. Class is a ton of students so if you want help from her and not a TA you need to work hard to be remembered. She cares about her students and gives plenty of opportunities for better understanding.
I found Dr. Wright's lectures to be very repetitive for simple concepts, so I stopped going to class around September. I turned in all the assignments and with the 35 points of easy extra credit I skated by with a 99% in the class. A good class to take if you don't want a time commitment.
The lectures were straight to the point and provided PowerPoints to follow along in canvas. With this class, there is a mandatory discussion section you must attend every week, but the lectures are not required. Reading is the majority of this class, and you will pass as long as you stay on top of your work.
Great professor, a great representation of the soc field. With 800 ppl in a class, material is bound to get repetitive for everyone to understand, but it's still very interesting. Put no textbooks but there are 3 books, totaling about $15. Read them but if you miss a chapter it's not the biggest deal. Super kind and intelligent person!
Dr. Wright is very kind as a person! And in course policies. There are opportunities for extra credit. She will often review course material a few times, so if you grasp the concept it may get annoying. There is a decent amount of reading but it's from real books or articles, and she summarizes the readings in class.
My favorite professor! Her lectures are very good, interesting, and easy to understand. Notes could be useful to take for paper. There are books you are required to read, however attending lecture and lab really helps if you end up not reading the book or missing a chapter. Overall, this was my fav class and professor!
Dr. Wright makes this class interesting and stress-free. She's extremely attentive and caring. You can tell she is really passionate about her job and loves to teach others. Attendance is not mandatory for lectures and there is a discussion group once a week that you have to go to. 3 exams total, they are a bit difficult but doable.
There is a lot of work to do, but if you create and stick to a schedule you will do great. Be prepared for weekly quizzes (three attempts each), weekly short answer questions, weekly readings, a research/analysis paper, three exams worth 105 points, and two short essay questions worth 80 points each. Very interesting stuff. You will do great!!
Awful teacher and would never take again. Forces opinions on you and you must believe that way. If you do not believe that way then good luck on getting a good grade. Never have I ever had to lie about my personal beliefs, but with Dr. Wright you do. She is very opinionated and not factual. You will not learn in here
Very opinionated and only teaches her opinions. Class is really just the luck of the draw because writing assignments are a huge portion of your grade, if your TA is easy, guarantees you an A. But the grading differences between TAs are insane.
She is a very clear upfront and forgiving professor.
this professor is very kind and understanding. in lecture, there is a lot of material covered so although attendance isn't mandatory, but it's definitely beneficial. there are required texts but honestly i did not buy/read a single one and passed the class with flying colors. iclicker was occasionally used. do the extra credit!
Professor Wright is wonderful at giving engaging lectures. The content is interesting and the class is easy with all the extra credit opportunities provided. She is very objective when talking about topics that may be sensitive to some leaving personal bias out.
certified yapper.
Cool class to take, make sure to read the readings. Lectures can be boring at times.
I hate Lisa Marie Wright. Refused to round up my grade 0.03% from an A- to an A. Entry level easy class, and takes it seriously for no reason. 0/10 Strongly despise
Make sure to take good notes in class. Lots of reading too. Super liberal as well. She's nice but would not take again
While attendance is not mandatory, unless you have a friend in the class who will share their notes with you you need to attend class, because she does most of her lecturing without detailed powerpoints, so there is not an easy way to get the notes if you are absent. There is a lot of outside reading, but overall the topics are quite interesting.
She is very opinionated and very liberal. She posts the lecture notes on Canvas but taking notes in lecture is still very helpful. Very centered around the books she assigns to read, I personally didn't read them. Study guides for all her exams are on Quizlet, which was very helpful. She does IClicker randomly, but attendance isn't mandatory.
Attendance isn't technically mandatory but she does use iClicker. Don't bother buying the books- I didn't read any of them. 3 easy assignments a week. Easy prep for exams with quizlets. You get a notecard for multiple choice exams and one 3-4 page paper. Discussion sessions are pointless but mandatory. Overall an easy course and easy prof.
The class overall is pretty easy. The exam material revolves around the lecture slides and the assigned reading, and she summarizes everything the last few lectures before the exam. All the lectures and slides are posted online, so you can check ahead of time if there will be a iClicker question, as these count towards your grade.
She was a very nice professor and she did a good job explaining the concepts in lecture. She doesn't always put all the definitions or explanations in the slides, so paying attention in lecture can be essential. There is a good amount of reading, but keeping up with it in some way as you go makes the midterm studying easier.
I took away a lot on the social workings of society. It was also a good starting point to understand the intersection between medicine and social life. I recommend to any premed student.
She is a great professor. Attendance isn't mandatory but if you go it makes it a lot easier to have the info for the exams. She chooses random days to do iClicker for points so that's another reason to go. The tests rely on lecture and the books. There are quizzes over the readings each week but you have 3 tries to take them. Do the extra credit!
Dr. Wright was amazing! If you take notes in lectures and do the readings, you'll do well on tests. She is also very caring and understanding. There are a few essays, but they are not too bad. There is also a weekly discussion held by a TA. Overall, one of the easiest classes with one of the best professors. There's also easy iClickers in class.
she was super passionate about the class and brought in guest speakers often. tests were kind of confusing, but there is lots of extra credit.
Dr. Wright is amazing. I took her intro sociology class a while back, and she is truly an amazing professor. Nothing bad to say at all. I was at an iffy point in my life, so I didn't score as well as I could've, but her class is well-laid out and an A is feasible. She seems to truly care about her students, and is an all-around lovely person.
For having so many students, Dr. Wright is always really easy to reach out to and really cares about her students. I could not recommend this class and instructor enough.
Three books read during the semester. If you don't want to buy/read them, you can probably get by with reading online summaries and looking at her review lectures. GO TO CLASS. Her PowerPoints aren't detailed, so if you want to pass the exams go to lectures. Writing assignment was quick and easy. Easy to reach and clearly cares about students.
Engaging lectures, though attendance is important as notes aren't fully online. The reading load is manageable, and tools like Unstuck study can really help with exam prep. Overall, a rewarding class with a fair grading system.
I loved Prof Wright! Even though it was a 600 person lecture, she still made it feel like she cared so much about each and every student. You do need to attend the lectures because there's not a ton of info on the slides. Exams were pretty easy too and you get a notecard for each one. I actually really enjoyed the lectures and they're interesting!
She's a good teacher and offers a lot of extra credit. Keep in mind tho that because of this she won't round your grade up even if you reach out and ask which is valid though considering all the extra credit opportunities. Definitely go to the lectures, but if you don't it's not the end of the world because she posts them online.
If I would've known that I was going to be in for a very strong opinionated course this semester about gender, I would've went elsewhere. A lot of her own personal opinion is giving throughout her lecture, she gives “study material” but it does not match or correlate at all with the tests she gives throughout the course. Beware.
Prof Wright was amazing. The lectures were so interesting and it was definitely a great class to take as a first-semester freshman. Read the books to do well on the tests! I'm not a reader by any means but it was interesting. Beware that the topics covered are very left-leaning, but it was overall. great class.
She was amazing! I would love to take her class again, as it was my favorite class and teacher at KU ever.
Dr. Wright is pretty nice and often drills the terms you need to know for exam by recaping every class. She uses Iclicker, so it is important to show up to class. The exams are not bad if you study and read the books. Although the class is pretty political and left leaning. She also provides 30 points of extra credit!
Very nice person but specific teaching style. Split into random groups for the final project within the fist few weeks. She lectures once a week, the other day a group will lecture about the weekly readings. Never grades on time, class always runs over.
Lots of group work in the class, most of time spent in class is group presentations instead of her lecturing. She won't grade a lot of assignments until the last day of the semester so you won't really know how you're doing, only things she grades on time are things to do with the final project/group presentation. However, it was still a good class
