Professor Materson's lectures are clear and straightforward. She's friendly and helpful during office hours. The readings she assigns are challenging but reasonable. I'd recommend Materson to anyone interested in American social and cultural history.
I loved Professor Materson's lectures! The class was challenging, but one of my favorite courses ever. She is very approachable and available to students.
very cool professor! material she teaches is very interesting; keep up with reading and ID's, because they can pile up.
A fantastic professor who has great knowlege of course material and a knack for clear, straightforward and interesting lectures. Always accesible and very personable. Highly recommended. Sounds like poster below needs to study more, slander less.
One of the better history dept professors, Materson was a factor in my switching to history as a major. Lectures are dynamic and interesting and she does good job of framing course content in todays context. Good speaking style, very articulate.
She is a good at lecturing and tries her hardest to make it interesting. I recommend her to anyone interested taking a class be her. There is a lot of reading and the essays are not easy, but overall I had a good experience.
Overall good class, clear lectures. Professor is a little overrated, she can be snappy. Fairly easy and interesting material!
Dr. Materson is an excellent teacher. She is quite knowledgable and her lectures are clear and concise. There's a lot of reading required for the course, but the books are interesting. The TAs are great; I looked forward to discussion weekly.
she knows her stuff.. class was interesting.. essays were gradly very harshly.. tas were ok.. class was a good experience.. too much readingthough.. sometimes the reading really wasn't that relavent.. but the reading was interesting..
Great class.
she's a great professor who can convey ideas in a very clear and concise manner. all of the books and readings were very interesting. this was the first class ever in which i actually enjoyed going to lecture and reading all the required material.
I took this class winter '04 and she was wonderful. the only reason that it wasn't easy is because the t.a.s grade and my t.a. didn't like me. but she knows so much about her subject and i really learned a lot!
Clear, well-organized, demanding with papers and classwork, and a somewhat tough grader, but she makes it worth it and is very knowledgeable about her subject. Dynamic lectures.
awesome professor! really knows here stuff! inspired me to become a history major =). she's very concise and is suuuuuuuuper nice!
Excellent prof! She really knows the material and clearly outlines all lectures. There's a lot of reading but it is a history class, you can skip a book or two and still be okay. She really tries to incorporate women of color in it too (it's a women's history class) but there were times I felt she could have talked about them a little more.
Great teacher. Great class. The class was very interesting. Professor Materson outlined the class lectures. She understood and explained the material extremely well. Papers were graded fairly, in my opinion. The TA was nice and helpful. I recommend this class.
Great professor. She's a great discussion moderator and knows how to keep the class on track. The reading was really interesting and totally managable and the class was set up well. She wants sophisticated papers, but is very helpful about them. She made a class I was really dreading (3 hour seminar) much less painful than if could have been.
I liked her at first, but her papers are unfairly graded, there was a TON of reading, and the stuff on the final was not what she said it was going to be. Her lectures were interesting, and she seemed very knowledgeable, but the other stuff just irritated me.
The papers were graded somewhat harshly, but the final was exactly what she said (she gave out a study guide with all of the possible terms and essay questions). There is sometimes too much reading but you can get the ideas from the group presentations. The lectures were very interesting but sometimes too slow.
As many of the history classes at UCD, this one was excellent. Professor Materson is very intelligent and really cares that the students understand the concepts and ideas. This class was so interesting. The only downside was the large amount of reading but it was well chosen and the films shown were great. Take any class you can with her.
great professor! she knows her stuff and outlines the lectures clearly and concisely, and verbal lectures are so much better than stupid powerpoint! the papers were graded unfairly, i thought, but it was her reader who graded them mostly so not her fault.
She is a good lecturer. Tests are not that difficult the only hard part is writting the essay and IDs in a 50 minute class. Papers a straightforward and easy. It is an interesting class. Definately Recommend. However, she talks a lot about one group of minorities and glosses over the others. Class is skewed towards her specialty.
i only took this class cuz its required for my major. she's nice, but she's anal. she will embarrass you infront of the whole class if you walk out, and her lectures are kinda boring. theres lots of reading, tho some of them arent too hard.
Her lectures are short, interesting, and clear. Go to class and you don't have to study for the exams. Do the reading, it's not hard. Papers are a little bit difficult so talk to your TA. Good, worthwhile class and fun, smart professor.
Pretty good class for "triple dip" or 3 g.e. requirements. other than that, if you are a guy like me, prepare for a feminist beat down if you take 72B
She's a pretty interesting teacher. Good lecturer but boy is she a feminist. The last day was a pow wow with the girls. Essay was okay, but hey, it's a good class.
She definitely has passion for her subject. She covers the bases pretty well and it's clear that this is a history class, not a women's studies class so she doesn't cram the feminism down your throat. Seek help with the essays and you should do pretty well; this class was enjoyable overall.
Materson is the most inspirational prof I've had in my years at Davis. Inspired me to be passionate about women's issues, and the class was defining in my academic experience. Amazing lectures, interesting reading, she is an outstanding speaker and really wants her students to enjoy the class and get the most out of it. She even sits in on sections
Dr.Materson is an excellent professor and her lectures are interesting. She's friendly and knowledgeable about the subj. However, her class was difficult for me because I wasn't good at writing nd her grade is 90% based on writing with too much reading and hard grading system on the 2 papers. Take this class if you don't care about your grade.
Materson's Sexuality class is great- the readings are clear (tho numerous) & her teaching style is top-notch (she thoroughly explains the major concepts and lectures reasonably). Beware of TA Brenda's harsh grading though- I'm enrolled P/NP but am afraid I won't earn a P b/c of TA's priority to style over content when grading the essays :(
Interesting lectures. Doesn't post lectures online so attendance is necessary. Exams are FAIR: essays and IDs connect to main course themes she repeats 100s of times. Readings were a pain though - 4 novels plus extra readers. But if you skim for main topic and pay attention to her knowledgeable lecture, you'll do fine.
Excellent professor. This class changed my life, it's so inspiring! If you come to class, pay attention and take good notes, you'll do fine on the tests. Papers are graded harshly, but the rubric they hand back gives very helpful comments to help you improve on the next, which will help you in other classes at UCD in the long run(helped me tons).
She definitley is inspiring. She wants students to actually learn. After taking her class, I came out knowing so much that my B grade came secondary to the desire to learn. She inspires a lot during Office Hours too! I highly recommend her. But 2 TAs grade hard. The last 2 weeks involves radical feminism. But still a great class to learn a lot! =)
Very interesting professor! She really taught so much about women's history and the class was well-organized and thought out. The work is a heavy load though, with 4 books and a reader. 2 papers, 2 tests, which were okay as long as you put in the work! overall-read the material and keep up in the class and spend time on the essays to do well
Very clear and concise lectures. Excellent teaching style, I learned a lot in this class. 2 essays, grading is completely based on your TA for the essays and all the exams. Hope that you have a good TA that doesn't grade too hard. Lots of reading in this class. Make sure you keep up and understand themes and IDs.
Materson is awesome! She is super passionate and she knows her stuff sooo well. Sometimes she talks really fast, so I would recommend typing your notes. My TA didn't grade the papers super harshly and the books & topics were actually really interesting to read and write about. GREAT CLASS!!
Best professor I've had. Lectures so well and you learn so much. The books are very interesting and easy to read. No textbook which was nice. Very passionate professor.
Amazing professor
Very good teacher and interesting class. We had two essays, two reading responses, and a written final exam, all of which were very reasonable. Highly recommended.
HORRIBLE. This teachdr is all about indoctrination.. I've heard she is good from a few people so I took her, but she was rude, pushy and her class was a hostile learning environment for students who didn't agree with her philosophy. I wasn't even one of them but I felt bad for students who did say they disagreed..Pointless textbooks, bad class
Prof. Materson lectures are robotic. She is unsure of her facts, when confronted with correct facts. She caters to young white minds, that do not now any better but to believe her text book lectures about African Americans. She talks of African Americans as objects. She never smiles. I do not reccommend this class, take it with someone else!
I had three classes with her -- she's great.
Challenging class but I learned a lot.
Challenging class, but amazing prof. Interesting topic (history of sexuality). She is very knowledgeable and gives clear, understandable lectures. There's a lot of reading (4 texts, lots of articles), and you must read everything if you want to get an A. No mid-term, study guide for final given about a week before.
She is very challenging. Her essay grading is very subjective and nitpicky. Only about 20% of the people got something above plain B on the essays. Lectures are not focused, all over the place, expects u to understand everything through hints. The readings are excessive, dense, and most are chosen because she can use them in several classes.
Be a fast notestaker in her class because she talks A LOT and fast! But the class wasnt that bad. to get a good grade though you have to get a good TA because they grade everything. If you go to class (for the IDs mostly) and read the books (for the 2 essays), you'll do fine.
OK, Dr. Materson is amazing. I had her for History of US Sexuality and she literally opened my eyes to so many things. I have never taken so much away from a class. She professes with such passion and she loves what she teaches. It is an engaging and difficult class--TAKE IT.
Don't get me wrong, Professor Materson is an awesome teacher. She's super enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and you will absolutely learn a lot of interesting info in her class. However, expect a ton of reading, two papers, and a final that is predominantly reading identifications, all which can be pretty tough.
Loved History 72b with Materson, the topic is so fascinating and the class really changes the way you see American history. I loved every lecture, Professor Materson does a spectacular job packing loads of important information in each lecture. Needless to say you learn a tremendous amount. So glad I took this class!
Dr. Materson is an excellent professor that makes the material very interesting. The class requires a lot of reading and paper writing, but there is a lot of help available to students and she loves to answer questions. Assigned books are very fascinating albeit tedious to read. Would recommend her class if you are willing to do the work:)
Lectures are very heavy but fun. The hour goes by quick if you get yourself into it and ask questions. Discussions are very helpful. 3 books, 2 essays but a clear grading rubric. I feel like this class is also heavily dependent on the TA you get and how interactive your discussion is.
I love love love her. She is so passionate and cute, and really shows you another perspective of American History. Her lectures are quite good and informative. There are few books to read, and I'd say one of them is really interesting while the others aren't as much. Nonetheless, it was great and I'm glad it was my first history class.
Dr. Materson is a great professor! She is really enthusiastic, passionate, and knowledgable about history. She is clear and concise during lecture, but be prepared to write fast notes. This class had 3 books, 2 papers, a midterm and a final so it can be a lot of work, but not too tough a grader. She is amazing and if you get the chance take her!
Professor Materson gave really interesting and engaging lectures. The class has 2 short papers, 1 midterm, and 1 final. The TAs are pretty accessible to help with writing papers and they are graded fairly. The midterm and final had a lot to do with lecture material and concepts, and included some writing. Overall, an awesome professor!!!
Professor Materson is super passionate about what she teaches. In this class she often had to stop herself from going too in-depth since this was only an introductory class. Taking her class can make anyone a feminist.
She's a nice person & enjoys what she teaches, no doubt. But she's not a good speaker. Slides, no information, just outlines. Papers (x2) and reading responses (x2) not graded too hard & solely based on books assigned, not class lectures. She'll discuss the paper topics in detail; you can get a lot of info to use. Final is MC, identifying readings.
She lectures A LOT, with no slides, just talking. She is super passionate and cares about her students, but HIS 184 should not be a 4 unit class with the amount of readings and papers she assigns. I could never take a breather in that class. A RIDICULOUS amount of readings with 2 papers and 2 mini-papers. Too much work for 4 units, honestly.
This professor is very passionate about what she teaches and aims to be inclusive of the voices and perspectives of her students. Very accommodating and kind if you have specific needs; obviously cares if her students grasp the material in a critical way. Is lecture heavy + plenty of reading, but it is a history course which requires these.
Prof Materson is really nice, easy to understand as she talks clearly and slowly (and will repeat important points) and she doesn't grade incredibly hard. I like that she is eager to take questions at any time and encourages discussions. Only drawback is, you need to be an auditory notetaker as she only posts outlines for lectures. Reading heavy!
Prof. Materson knows her stuff but the whole class is based on readings (which are extensive) and lectures which are hard to follow. Dont miss class unless you make a friend to get the notes from because its hard to make up notes. She talks fast and doesnt always repeat things so be careful. Overall, I wouldnt take another class with her.
She is super passionate about the subject, but if you are not also equally enthusiastic/disagree with the spin she puts on history, then youre going to have a really rough time. The reading is miserable, the papers arent too bad, and lectures are a bore and hard to follow. Its hard to know whats important, too. Love history, but this sucked.
She knows her material. Youll have to go to every lecture to get the material because she doesnt make anything accessible outside of lecture except the assigned readings. Its part of her feminist appeal I guess. I voice record her and thats probably the only reason I havent gone insane in her class.
Lisa is a wonderful lecturer and this class will reframe your understanding of US history and gender in today's society. The class demands lots of reading and lectures are dense, but this is true of almost all history classes. Do not be warded off by complaints: if you are interested in history/the subject and put in work, you'll do fine.
P. Materson is very passionate about history. Her lectures consist of her lecturing for 50 mins. There is one powerpoint slide for each lecture. So, if you are not a good notetaker you should maybe share a google doc with a friend to make sure you got everything she touched on. The midterms were based on lectures and reading.
I hated history before I took her class. You do have to attend lecture to do well & reading the books is worthwhile, they relate a lot to the concepts covered in class. She's very ope to questions and takes the time to explain all the important points. 1 midterm, 2 papers & a final. Going to your TA's office hours, they grade your papers.
Let me tell ya buckle your seatbelts if you take this class and have lots of Advil ready. This was the worst class I have taken in my college career and I am a stem major. This women will tell you shes going to give you concise information but all you do is GO IN CIRCLES. She never makes a full thought and her information is usually not correct.
She's a really great professor, my favorite class this quarter. Her lectures are really engaging and short (only about 30 min). Papers are easy if you follow along with lectures and main reading. Lots of reading, but you don't have to do all of it if it doesn't come up in discussions/paper. 2 papers, 1 midterm, and a final.
Proff. Materson is WONDERFUL. She is very passionate about her studies; make sure to talk about women in Puerto Rico if related to any topic, because her studies derive from that. Lectures are full of information, optional live zoom meetings which are pre-recorded so that's good. Composed of 2 Papers , a Midterm, and Final which are all essays.
Lectures could have been organized a bit better but overall lots of interesting material. Would highly recommend taking this course to learn more about women of color in the US. Stay on top of your readings and you should be good!
Professor Materson will definitely make you put in the effort for the class, but she's very understanding and makes an effort to help students in her class. She will happily make considerations for you, given that you've put effort either into your assignments or class participation.
I'm a history major and I found the course material super interesting, but the prof was so verbose. She would answer simple questions with needlessly elaborate and confusing responses, and spent way too much time prefacing her lectures rather than lecturing. Would recommend for the readings alone, but if you're not into history, skip this one.
Professor Materson is a really nice and well-read person, but she's a tad dull during her lectures and sometimes she can veer into niche tangents but overall she means the best and I loved this class (mainly because of the TA) but you will have to read in order to get an A but I don't think attending lecture is super important.
The readings in this class were extensive and hard to follow, especially if youre taking this class as a ge and not a history major. Incredibly difficult to keep up with readings only for papers to be graded so critically. Would not recommend.
An easy but sometimes boring class. She assigns a great deal of reading, but the lectures are recorded and put on Canvas which makes it nice because attendance is never really mandatory. She takes a while to come to a complete thought and so her lectures can sometimes be confusing, but all in all it was a fairly easy A.
Took this class as a GE. Didn't show up to a lot of the lectures because she uploads them online and it is better for me to watch them that way. Whole class is graded on discussion participation, 2 papers, and 2 take home exams. Workload is very easy but the content won't come naturally to everyone.
Took for GE credit. Typical class graded on midterm and final essays, two other essays, and a discussion thread. The content takes a lot of thought and analysis. I think this wouldn't be the best GE for a STEM major.
took for GE, grades based on 2 papers, take home midterm + final, discussion section participation + thread. posts lectures online which is nice. prof is pretty okay at lecturing but some concepts may be harder to grasp than others but discussion sections definitely help u understand them more
TA does all the grading, so you need to pray for a good TA. I got all 90+ on the assignment and test but I got a 75 on the first essay, which messed my grade up. Graded by two essays and two exams, and A LOT of readings. I didn't read most of the readings tho, and managed to pass. The professor gives solid lectures.
She was a decent prof. Definitely rambled if you ask a question during class and finds ways around the question or answers it differently. The material is interesting. TAs grade the papers in the class and aren't harsh graders but just make sure to write something at least decent.
Boring lectures, encourages class participation in lectures, very accommodating. Has an automatic 24 hour "grace period" after the deadline on big assignments allowing you to submit late with no penalities/no questions asked so she does not give extra extensions on papers.
I was in the honors section. Materson was a very kind person, I enjoyed her lectures/discussions, and you can tell she cared a lot about what she was talking about. She was also a very lenient grader and provided lots of feedback
This course is very hard and boring. You should go to your TA's OH because they grade your paper. Midterm and Final is hard.
Dr. Materson is a great prof! Loved going to her lectures and she's extremely knowledgeable and informative. Always there to help and answer questions. She does give lots of outside reading, but this can be quite common with history classes of a large breadth. Highly recommend!
professor materson is very knowledgeable and a great lecturer. 1 midterm, 2 papers, & a final as well as discussion participation. my TA graded very leniently so an easy A if u study and stay up to date. felt this course offered a lot of valuable information/perspectives. interesting (sometimes long) readings. a solid history course overall!
Easy class, easy papers, easy tests. I loved attending every single lecture, Materson is an amazing professor.
The grade is based on 2 papers, 1 midterm, 1 final, and participation points. Not so hard, but do some study if you want an A.
Professors not that bad but this rating is for the 72B class. Unnecessary amounts of weekly readings. Discussion attendance is mandatory. My TA graded very harsh to the point that it was unfair, and I wish I had picked a different discussion section. This class requires a lot of memorization so unless you enjoy history, I do not recommend.
Lecture was slow, somewhat unorganized and boring. My TA was a harsh grader which was difficult. Her final which would've been a bluebook was made multiple choice due to TA strikes -- it was very easy. Bluebooks are usually graded harshly.
There is a LOT of reading for this class but most of the readings are pretty interesting and the discussions can be fun if you have a good TA. The midterm exam was pretty easy but the papers are definitely the most important part of the class and there's only 2.
Graded based on 2 papers, 1 midterm, and the final. There was an over-exaggerated amount of readings but you don't have to read rather skim. Both papers were straightforward and given 1 week to write. Midterm was easy if you study, the final sucked as it was more pick and choosing of the readings. Attended 3 total lectures but every discussion.
Lectures are super dreary. I used to fall asleep midway through all of the lectures. Midterms and Finals seem hard, but are easy, just use examples from the reading to make your argument. I didn't pay much attention in lectures, but read my readings and did well. TA carried the class. Boring class, didn't learn much, just the same thing over again.
Participation is key, just make sure to read and contribute to discussions. She expects high quality final papers but you get a lot of time and help. Fun and interesting class.
The professor was very nice and I liked her energy in lectures, but she does tend to repeat herself a lot which isn't that bad. The TA's grade everything so I would advise asking them all your questions. The papers are what really brought my grade down since there is no clear rubric which makes it frustrating to see where and how you lost points.
I took Prof. Materson's HIS 072 class last quarter, and I really enjoyed it. She is super passionate and engaging during lectures, and I can tell that she really wants her students to succeed. I found the coursework/structure to be interesting and not too difficult, although your final grade will be very heavy on the 2 tests and 2 papers :')
Professor Materson is passionate about what she teaches, however I did not find her to be engaging at all. My TA is really who taught me in this class, otherwise I'd be a bit lost. Be prepared to write multiple essays, which the majority of your grade depends on. This isn't an easy GE.
I really enjoyed this class last quarter. It made me feel connected to history in a way that I haven't before. As for the format, there was a lot of reading but I found it engaging, so it wasn't a chore. There were a couple papers, but they weren't bad. Lectures were really interesting. It was clear she wanted everyone to succeed. Awesome class!
Dr. Materson covers a wide variety of material, but the basis of this class is the readings, which are a lot. The lectures are sometimes difficult to understand since the slides don't have a ton of info, so it can be difficult to follow along. You will only be graded on a few major assignments, which can affect your grade.
I liked Prof Materson! She is very knowledgeable about the queer movements and its history. A few essays and reading responses throughout the quarter but nothing too crazy. My only complaint is that it was mostly lectures although we did watch a documentary about Harvey Milk which I loved! Besides the long lectures, it was a fairly easy class.
