I would suggest taking this course with a different teacher.
dropped class cuz she's so mean!
Hard as hell, but if you put up with her you will be at the top of your game in English
Very HARD! teacher, bad attitude, horrible teaching skills...Take my advice, don't take any of her classes.
I can't believe this person is a teacher. She misses a lot of classes. Loves to give F's to students. Lectures are confusing and very hard to understand. She also humiliates students in front of everybody.
Very bad teacher. Takes everything WAY too personally. She threw a girl out of our class because she was late! What is this? High school? She puts students down for not having homework. If you don't have the same point of view as her. You're wrong. She doesn't encourage critical thinking at all. Steer clear if you can!!

Shes not rude she just expects common courtesy-this class will prepare you for future classes well. As long as your willing to read and do your homework you'll do good in this class. I took it my first semester and got an A.
She is a cool teacher. Her class is very entertaining and she will help you a lot on your english papers
At some point in Orta's career, all of her human emotions and compassions shriveled up and died. She has very high standards, and when people don't meet those standards, she has absolutely no understanding and let's them know that they're not good enough in a very rude, condescending way. If English is one of your weaker subjects, I suggest finding a different teacher. Orta tends to discourage those that have problems rather than encourage them to learn and do better.

she is very hard.she sucks and does not help you. she gives you four 5 page essays to do and 5 in class essay which she only counts one of. too much reading and homework and does not even count towards grade.
she was probably the rudest teacher i've ever had. first and only class i've ever dropped. she was incredibly rude to two blind girls that were in the class and made it a point to let them know they were NOT welcome because she didn't have time to give them extra help. they left crying! rude, condescending and a completely unfair grader. Drop! Now!
As you have already read before this comment.I agree with everyone else. She is RUDE and very un-helpful!!!She doesn't care about her students at all!She expects you to understand everything she is asking you to do before you even get into the class. You don't go into a class to know what you are doing. You go in to learn something new.Stay far away!
Tough, but makes subject very interesting and compelling. Typical university-grade instructor; getting an "A" feels that much better ;)
She is a hard teacher but she does help you out if your doing poorly. Just be nice and pay attention and show up to class since showing up is really important. Didn't like the 4 essays in one semester. Thats a pain to do.
please dont choose her youll have a bad year
She is a hard teacher and gives a lot of work. Many of my classmates say that the way she stares directly at someones eyes when they talk makes them feel uncomfortable in their own skin. I think that she makes you earn your grade, and that surviving her course will make you stronger and more ready for classes to come. The Whybrow book is boring
One of the second best english teachers I have ever had. Although this class requires a lot of writing, I recommend her because she will prepare you for other english courses. If you need help, she is there.
An amazing teacher. took two of her classes and definitely prepares you for the rest of your education when it comes to writing. Requires a lot of writing but is worth taking.
She's a strict teacher and inflexible about her rules to a fault. If this works for you, good. If not, well... If you miss more than two weeks of class or 1 essay (out of 5), she will flunk you, and she doesn't accept late work (including said essays). Also, her assignments can be uncomfortably personal. So, you /might/ not want to take this class.
Orta presented a lot of work, and held strong expectations for student effort. She is a tough grader (don't expect to skate through the course), but she is fair. Orta is a good professor for those individuals who actually want a college course experience, rather than those who want an easy grade.
She is the best teacher I have ever had! I learned so much from her. It is a hard class but she is willing to help you. What an amazing lady!
I took Literature of the Drama with her and absolutely loved it. She was very clear, very responsive, and led the class as a discussion, rather than a dull lecture.
This woman's expectations of effort are absolutely absurd. She assigns work as though her class is a full-time job and completely disregards the fact that the majority of the students have multiple other classes as well as jobs.
She is horrible. She assigns way too much work, doesn't communicate, and is generally not a pleasant teacher. AVOID HER!
You might as well take her class online. She has the exact same curriculum of assignments for all of her classes, but the ones that are supposed to meet get to endure hours of pointless lectures. She makes attendance mandatory but then spend all of class doing absolutely nothing. She collected one assignment we did in class all semester. Shes a b
50 assignments/1 semester, so 3 a week. 4 essays, 1 a month. Absolutely nothing done in the classroom, just random lectures/group work. Difficult class, but to be fair, I am a much better writer because of it and I can say I really benefited from it. It's literally like bootcamp, but I did every assignment and did well on the essays and I got an A.
I do not recommend taking her class at all, she is unhelpful and strict and her class time is the most pointless and wasted time I have ever had the displeasure of experiencing. If you absolutaly must take her class do the online version. It is the exact same curriculum just without wasting your time.
She really is a good teacher but she's not easy. Take advantage of her office hours, she is always willing to help her students. She does give a few assignments of homework each week consisting of both reading comprehension and writing, but I have become a better writer because of this class. To succeed in her class you must always stay on task.
Most rude teacher I've ever had. Does absolutely nothing in class but threatens to drop you after 4 missed classes. Everything done online. Throws a fit if you leave without asking. Humiliates students in front of the whole class. Should be a high school teacher because she acts like one.
Worst teacher I have ever had!!! I do NOT recommend her to anyone, unless you're looking to have a horrible semester!! She's rude, unhelpful and stubborn! She expects students to know exactly what to do before she even explains anything. This is a class, we're obviously there to learn, something she doesn't understand!! DO NOT ENROLL WITH HER!!
You have to do 2 postings every week, quizzes are online and easy. Attendance is important since you can't pass this class if your absence are more than twice. Easy class if you are a diligent student. Just do the work and you will not receive a bad grade nor hard times in this class.
Orta is a good prof. But if you are lazy, STEER CLEAR. I got 100% on the final & A's on my papers. I did not try super hard in her class at all, and English is not my thing. Honestly, her class is English Bootcamp but she made me a better writer so I tolerated it. Attendance is mandatory & you literally do NOTHING during class, everything is online
I love Ms. Orta and her class. It was very, very useful for me. It wasn't easy; yes, I worked hard. Ms. Lisa is very nice, interesting, intelligent, and supportive. Grading is very fair. All you need to do is work on assignments in time and put some efforts, time, and thoughts in it. Goofing around won't work, that's true. Highly recommended!
She is not a good teacher at all. Ms. Orta constantly contradicts herself and makes it annoying to listen. Her lessons are more like elementary school not what you would expect for college. She acts like her students are uneducated. Her lessons are unnecessary and useless. I would not take her even if she was the only teacher.
The worst teacher I have ever had. She treats her students like freshman in high school! One of the most un-professional teachers I have ever had. She has no filter, she'll call you out for the dumbest things. She makes you buy extra online programs along with the book. And there are assignments on the program due every friday! Everything is online
She helped me improve my writing significantly. She gave a decent amount of homework, but almost all of it was relevant, helpful and easy to stay up with. She's very passionate about english and gave use a lot of useful advice and tools to prepare us for the rest of our college careers. If you follow directions and be respectful, you will do great!
Well I'll start off saying, yes she can be very "high school". Don't dare come to her class late. Teaches studytime management. The work isn't very hard you have about 3 posts on d2l a week 4 essays& graded very fairly. I don't understand why people complain about the assignments. If you do them you get credit. Don't be lazy you will need to work
Unclear in explaining things. Not consistent at times. She have her own believe in things the way it should be when it should be you personal opinion.
Worst teacher I've ever had. She's really unprofessional, and has no idea how to work w college students. I guaranteed you'll be frustrated when sitting in her class. Her lectures are long and pointless, and she offers no real help. She rambles on about things that have nothing to do w the actual material. Overall terrible teacher.
Very clear with the grading rubric on essays. If you fulfill all the criteria you'll get a good grade. Office hours were a great help - I'd recommend seeing her if you need any help at all, since in-class the lectures are very compact and time-sensitive.
This was honestly the worst class I ever took. It could have been simple, but found the assignments to be stupid and did not like the teacher and the way she ran the class. She was very confusing and often seemed snooty and passive aggressive.
Such a great professor. She's not easy but if you show up, do the work and think... you will get an A. Most work is on line+ she gives 4 essay assignments and a final. Gives great tools and lots of info on what to expect in college (and life). Personality is not for everyone. But definitely someone I will be thankful for many years to come.
Don't be late to class unless you want to be called out and get embarrassed. Even if you think you have the best paper you've ever written, her viewpoint might be different, so visit office hours prior to submitting a final version for every essay. Textbook needed very often for the first half of semester, and then not as often.
She's a good teacher. But super tough grader. Don't take her class.
Great professor! I enjoyed her class.
Blunt. Rude. Very tough grader. Going to her office hours will help you out 100%.
She is a tough grader and sometimes, I had to meet her and talk to her so she could understand my main point. But I don't regret taking her. She actually makes us work and gives information that we will need in the future. If you are Freshman, I highly recommend you to take this class! Might be hard for now, but helpful.
Professor Orta was by far the best teacher I've had at DVC. She is such a genuine person and truly cares about her students. Take advantage of her office hours and get to know her!! She is willing to help you with anything and everything to make sure you get the best grade possible. I wouldn't be the writer I am today without her.
I'm not sure where there's so much negativity for Ms. Orta. I loved her! She's great during office hours, where she gives great feedback. I do know that Ms. Orta gives assignments that no other English teacher does, but they're incredibly insightful. She gives great resources on how to succeed in college overall.
Professor Orta was is a good teacher and is clear with what she expects out of her students. I advise you to stay on her good side because she will not hesitate to call you out. To get a good grade in this class you MUST do all of the assignments, bring ALL materials to class (SHE CAN/WILL KICK YOU OUT), and go to her for feedback on your essays!
Lisa will either click or clash with you as a student. There is very little middle ground. She is genuinely invested in the subject & is willing to give assistance if it is sought-out in the email or office-hour form. Favorably impressed.
She's extremely unclear with her directions, and has a lot of technical difficulties (too many to be teaching an online class). . She says to watch video links that lead to error pages. She also wants you to copy other author's formats, instead of developing your own. We had to copy the sentence of an essay, and its layout, for 2 of our assignments
By far the worst teacher I've ever had in my entire life. My preschool teacher could teach English 122 better than she can. She's extremely unclear with what she wants for her essays. She doesn't know what a thesis is. I have learned nothing from her class and feel like my english skills and knowledge have reduced significantly.
Out of all the online classes I've taken in my life, hers is by far the WORST. She is very unclear about what she wants the final product to be and grades you harshly based on that. Regardless of if you follow the assignment sheet. She wants you to basically copy other peoples writing styles which to me teaches us nothing about writing.
A very harsh grader, especially to ESL students. She doesn't set up online assignments correctly and sets them up last minute. She doesn't grade solely based on her grading rubrics and grades you based upon what arguments or points she believes you should have included in your essays.
Lisa is Amazing! She taught me how to write a perfect paper. End of story.
If she doesn't like you then you are screwed. She is not open to different perspectives and will mark you down if you have a different opinion from her. I had a hard time with her because I tried really hard to follow up with her (I took an online class with you) and she was short, not very friendly, and she was not helpful.
She has good intentions. However, the way she teaches is unlike any other English prof. She belittles students when they aren't in line with what she sees as "correct." Her expectations for essays are comparable to reviews. Orta assigns work as if her students only take 2 classes, hers being the priority. In previous ENG classes, I'm an A+ student.
I'm usually optimistic when it comes to professor reviews, however, Mrs. Orta is a whole new category of awful. She makes me feel uncomfortable because she acts as if she's better than everyone else in the room. Her assignments are hard, but if you put in effort you have a chance of receiving a solid B. I recommend taking a different ENG class...
Be warned: A facade of pleasantries hides an insidious person.
She gives out a huge workload, it's stressful but I find time to complete everything. The reason I give her such a low score is because she is the rudest professor I've ever had and she acts like she's better than everyone. She doesn't even teach very well either, she just complains in class like 60% of the time.
Lisa Orta is the best English professor I have had the pleasure to work with. To be honest I don't understand all the negative reviews. If you come to her class ready to learn (aka don't bs in your studies) you will pass the class & gain a great ally at DVC. Any questions, she is always open to help you grow YOUR ideas. Highly recommended :)
I would not recommend Ms. Orta for English. Beware if she does not like you. She likes to humiliate her students that she believes are not performing well and she has no issues with making you seem inferior to her high academic standings. It's unfortunate that she is allowed to bully and belittle her students.
If you get what she is expecting for the essays and write it properly, you might get A. But I took a long time to understand it. If you miss one of the requests, your grade would go down a lot. She is a tough grader, not generous at all. What I recommend you is go to office hour and talk to her.
If your serious about your studies, and motivated to improve your writing, Mrs. Orta is the teacher you want to take. Yes, at the beginning her grading style might seem harsh, but if you apply yourself and go to her office hours, you will see an improvement. At the end, you'll learn how to write better and manage your time like a pro!
I Loved the feedback she gave to me. She was hard on me, but that made me learn a lot that I am using in other classes. EXCELLENT teacher and very friendly. Will definitely be talking to her in the future if I ever get around to writing the book I want to write.
Professor Orta teaches more than just English; she teaches students how to be successful in college. From time-management skills to preparing for final exams, there is plenty of useful information taught by her. That said, she will challenge you to use this new information to succeed in her class. Apply what is taught and take her class seriously.
Prof. Orta is a great English teacher, who cares about her students' academic success. She is very accessible outside of class, and is ready to help out with any questions/comments on her coursework. If you complete all assignments and ask for her feedback before submission, you will learn a lot from taking her class and receive an A.
She's a good professor. She cares about teaching you what you paid to learn about. She has a lot of homework but it's manageable. She makes the class as interesting as possible within the class criteria. As long as you stay on her good side she won't be sassy towards you, but sometimes it'll be one of those days and no one is safe.
Do you enjoy a sassy teacher? Can you laugh it off if the sas is directed at you? Orta is sassy funny guys. She won't sugarcoat things for you and that's a good thing. If you can get your work done and follow her instructions you've totally got this. When your confused don't be afraid to ask questions and schedule office hours, she's very helpful.
If you want an easy A then don't take any of Lisa's classes. However, if you want a prof. that is worth every penny, then Lisa's the teacher for you. She does give a lot of homework but, it's all fairly easy with the exception of a few papers.
Ms Orta was my FAVORITE last semester, shes hella funny I WAS really intimidated at first but Lisa is so sweet the hardest thing about this class is the discussion posts but just set a weekly reminder on your phone or something youll be fine I would go on the London trip solely to spend time with this teacher she is swell #respectlisa #welovelisa
Prof. Orta is one of the best teachers that I have had in my academic career. She has weekly discussion posts and 4 essays. As long as you attend one office hour, or have her look at your essay before you turn it in, its almost a guaranteed A or B. As a side note, for those who take/took her class, she offers help writing college essays as well.
If you want to gain tools that youll use throughout your academic career, youve come to the right place. Professor Orta equipped me with the ability to manage my time, prepare for exams, and to properly assert and defend a thesis. Visiting her office hours is highly recommended. Go to class, communicate with her, do the work, and its an easy A!
Professor Orta is by far the best English Professor I have taken. She is brilliant and cares about your goals. It is important to know you will have to work hard in this class, BUT I cannot recommend her enough. You need to come prepared and ready to really improve your skills. What you invest into her class you will get back so keep that in mind.
This was a very good experience taking her class. She is patient when you come to her with questions and responsive to emails. I would take her again.
She was very picky on what she wanted out of the essays and would get really mad if your grammar wasn't up to par to her standards. If you are willing to put up with it then she will be a great professor for you.
She is very short with students. The phrase "there are no stupid questions" is not valid in her classroom. I am always afraid to ask her questions in front of the class. Her feedback is usually opinion based. I always felt like she belittled students in class so I never spoke out. she is not friendly in class.
Lisa is by far one of the worst professors I have ever had. She belittles students, is unhelpful when you approach her in class, and makes snarky comments that leaves students feel extremely uneasy. Her workload is heavy and being that I took one of her classes in London, and not back at DVC, means there will be even more work. Do not recommend.
Lisa Orta is by far the worst professor I've ever had. I was honestly surprised to see that she has a sort of decent rating she has on her. She belittles students, calls them out in front of the class, makes you feel stupid for asking any type of question. No opinion is correct besides hers. BEWARE.
Please do not take Lisa Orta if you would like to enjoy your semester. She has a habit of belittling students, is an inconsistent grader, and if I could go back in time I would have dropped her class and saved myself the stress of having her as my teacher. I encourage you to find a teacher who has respect for their students.
Orta is not a professor I recommend/would ever take again. Though her reactions when approached by students are wildly unpredictable, she is typically cold, cruel, & callous towards students, & openly belittles them in front of the class or one on one. If she does something wrong, she finds a way to blame the class. Do not try to ask her questions.
You "Orta" take a different English class with a different professor. Avoid at all costs.
Knows how to teach an English class and write an essay correctly, but otherwise doesnt know what she is talking about. Very much likes to argue with students and be very condescending; she also makes sure you know she is smarter than you and that her point is the only point.
Good thing is she is passionate about literature but unless you're a bookworm you'll struggle. Moves very fast so if you're not used to reading A LOT it's tough to keep up. Some weekly assignments often seem pointless. Insists you purchase physical copies of books instead of e-books for no real reason.
She picks on you for every little thing even if someone else is doing the exact same thing. If you do one wrong thing she will be on your back for everything. Rude and unfair. If I could I would give her 0/5 starts. DO NOT TAKE TRY TO FIND DIFFERENT PROFESSOR.
She is extremely rude and belittling but she is very passionate about what she does and gives good advice on not only your essays and class work but on getting through college in general. You can tell she just wants to be respected but she would probably receive that respect if she learned not to treat students like they are below her.
If you have a job, other classes, a hobby, or just a life in general... don't take her class. She assigns work as if she's the only class you'll ever take, only to grade you as if she doesn't know what you're talking about. Not to mention HER sample essays are horrible themselves. Does she know this is a freshman level class?
Get ready to read. Even while online we read 5 books in the semester. She nitpicks every little piece of your paper. However, if you dont do well, she may allow a rewrite if a lot of students dont do well. Discussion posts twice a wk, which can be a lot of work at times. Six 3-5 pg papers. Listen to her feedback, it will help you in the long run.
She is passionate about literature. The books she assigns are culturally diverse and relevant. Essays are easy A's if you know how to structure one and just follow her instructions. There are a LOT of assignments and the class is very easy to fall behind in if you're not used to constant reading. Final project (portfolio) felt kind of pointless.
If you are thinking about taking a course for her, RUN. Everything is waaaay harder than it has to be, the work load is out of control, inconsistent grading / expectations, and unrealistic criticism, unfair grading process, etc. etc. Longest semester ever.
Waaaaay to critical on grading. Not consistent on grading. Out of four classes, I spend more time working on this class than my others combined. I would not recommend, find a different professor for ENG 123.
One of those classes you don't really learn anything, because the grading standards are so unpredictable and the work load is intense. When she grades, its only a 10 / 10 or 5 /10 on weekly discussions. No in between! So you can do the entire assignment and she isn't satisfied, you get a 50%. Its not worth the stress, take a different professor.
Really a hard grader and tough to understand or deceiver what is needed to earn an A in the assignments. I swear I did exactly what the assignment stated to do, but still got 5 out of 10's on a lot of discussion posts that I felt had met the instructions of the post. Very difficult grader! Lots of reading! I spent a lot of time on the assignments.
Professor Orta is a wonderful teacher. Taking her class, you know that she is passionate about what she teaches. Yes, you have to participate in her class, but that should be expected in any college course. Don't be afraid of meeting with her outside of class! She genuinely cares about her students, and cares about them succeeding.
The classes required substantial involvement, but the assignments were very fun to complete!! I took English 123 and enjoyed the readings and assignment. Prof Orta was easy to talk to during office hours (ry not turn in assignments late: as long as you do the work she will try to help you as much as she can). I recommend!
I think Professor Orta is amazing. I learned a lot from her literature choices and the assignments. The class is not an easy class. It takes commitment and dedication. If you have those 2 things, there should be no problem getting an A. She is always available and willing to give you the feedback needed to succeed.
I don't know why so many students are hating on her, but she's one of the best teacher I've ever had. It's simple, if you do the work you get the grade. She will encourage you to speak up in the class and never says no when you ask her for help outside the class. She'll definitely reach you how to write great essay. Highly recommend her class.
She doesn't teach anything! It's all group work.
It's not about the coursework or how difficult the class or assignments are; it's that she is literally a bad person. ALSO prepare for group work EVERY CLASS
Too much work for an online 3 credit class. Im taking a 5 and 4 unit class and this class takes up all my time. If you follow her directions and do the work, you will get an A but you really have to work for it. Her feedback is helpful.
Maybe her class has changed since these reviews but my online experience with her in english 123 was great! This was what i expected from the critical thinking course, and the assignments helped me develop a better voice as a writer. The assignments were creative rather than the regular write an essay on XYZ topix and i never got bored.
The content was interesting, and I felt she was also very passionate about teaching. She was always there to help during office hours, which you should make use of if you can.
Too much work unrealistic expectations, write an essay in 3 days and expect the draft to be perfect. Doesn't always comment on the work so it's hard to tell if she likes it or not. only analyzing no couching the quotations as I learnt in 122. Don't follow the samples she gives as that is what she doesn't want. She doesn't want your view point.
Good experience with prof Orta, I took the class online and really enjoyed it. The structure of the content was nice, she was very responsive, and the class was interesting. Not the type of class for students who are used to plagiarizing or copying quiz answers from quizlet, but a very comprehensive learning experience. Thank you professor!
Groups everyday! She doesn't teach anything!! She's super mean.
Has the potential to be a great teacher but she's so in her head about being important. She is rude, she doesn't teach, groups EVERYDAY. She's freaked out on people several times, psycho. completely unprofessional.
I found Ms. Orta's class to be challenging, but rewarding if you do well. She gives a ton of homework, and I mean A TON. I have actually lost count of how many essays I had to write and we read 3-4 novels over the course of the semester. I would honestly only take Ms. Orta if love literature because this class will really test you.
Tons of reading and assignments to do that take up more time than my 4 other classes combined. Ive always been a straight A student but got my first C in her class. Discouraging when she gives you feedback and doesnt teach anything.
I have never rated a professor before but I feel I should aware people that Professor Orta is a very hard and difficult teacher. She assigns SO much homework (reading, discussion boards, papers) and doesnt give you enough time to even complete them. I feel she doesnt even give good feedback on the assignments. Try picking a different teacher!
This professor is kind and understanding. She builds relationships with her students that are up-lifting. That being said, this is not an easy class. You should attend office hours for more clear feedback and be willing to put in time and effort. She will work with you, but you have to be willing to work first. Lots of reading, but good reading!
Orta's online platform was amazing, super organized and thoughtful. You're expected to read 1 poem series, 1 graphic novel, and 3 novels. Lots of reading material, however, they were easy reads. The weekly discussion posts were straightforward, however, the essays were a little rough as you must follow her guidelines when analyzing the material.
Professor Orta's course is challenging, she makes you work for your grade with reading, discussions and essays. She gives direct and applicable feedback on drafts- turn them in! Putting effort into this course does pay off- and I feel like I gained valuable skills that will apply to the rest of my academic career and beyond.
Lisa was one of my all time favorite instructors. She provided excellent direction and support throughout the term. Since the beginning of our class, I have noted a distinct improvement in my reading and writing capabilities. I am confident that this class will enable me to perform at a higher lever in my professional and educational endeavors.
Lisa was one of my all time favorite instructors. She provided excellent direction and support throughout the term. She was so mean and grading DID NOT make sense. So many papers and the books were so weird and boring. She is so nit picky and just seems like she is rooting for you to fail. DO NOT TAKE!!
This class was extremely difficult and overwhelming. There are a total of 6 essays for the class and there isn't enough time to revise after the drafts. The rubric and feedback given are often unclear and it seems almost impossible to get an A in this class. If you are taking a heavy course load I do not recommend this professor. It won't end well.
I enjoyed reading the books we read during this semester. She's a nice teacher, however she's not clear on giving feedback on your paper. She's not really specific on what you need to fix, which is hard to understand at most. She does put in a lot of effort into creating reading guides for us which helps, and she's fair about grading.
I took her class back in 2007. I remember 30 students started off in the class and 6 actually finished the class. I was always a slacker and class clown in high school. Lisa Orta really opened my eyes (even though she was tough) and challenged me. If youre looking into turning your life around, I would highly recommend.
Lisa Orta was a teacher that made a difference in my academic career. . She gives great feedback, she is helpful, & can be lenient if she knows you are trying. I got a B only because I missed some assignments but I could have gotten A. You will not pass this class if you try winging it. You will read 5 different genre novels. Be prepared to read.
- An absolutely inhumane amount, most of which is incredibly un-interesting. She essentially assigns the same assignment four times a week. - rude, pretentious. - Half of the work is from the NYT which would be fine if the website didn't force me to log in six times - Giving a lot of work is one thing, doing it without teaching is another.
I enjoyed the novels she assigned for this Critical Thinking Class. You just need to set aside time to read them. I thought the peer review part of the assignments were unnecessary. Overall, you will be fine as long as you follow the rubric requirements and grading criteria.
Lots of work, this isn't a *easy* class, but I have learned a lot. The professor gives good feed back, and has gone above and beyond for me, with advice on more than just my English class. If you want to learn, I'd recommend her.
Professor Orta is one of the most difficult instructors I have ever had. I took her Reading & Comprehension course, yet majority of the work we did was read other people's work and copy their style. I felt as if I was simply taking the outline of someone else's work and making it "my own". I cannot say I learned anything from this class.
Prof. Orta was the best teacher I've ever had. She takes the time to guide, support, and help where needed. She is full of resources and connections to make the process fun. Through the content in her class, I feel I am a better student and will be able to apply what I learned in my future studies as well as in life.
if you have anything outside of school I do not suggest her, I don't take classes for granted and expect to be easy and I'm usually an A student but I am also a student athlete and worked. Her online class was very difficult, her feedback helped with nothing, loads of homework, little time to write essays. I didn't feel I improved in anyway.
The class was easy but I felt like I had little time to complete essays and homework. Feedback was always confusing and grades extremely tough. Barely pulled through with a B. I recommend taking a different professor if you can.
Unusually nitpicky about her grading system, feedback offered is often rude, so many essays with no time to read or gather what youve read let alone think about a good essay topic
Trying to keep up with this class's reading and assignments is like running an uphill race. Prompts for essays are extremely vague and are tailored to her very abstract and specific vocabulary. reading is assigned in massive chunks basically forcing you to skim and summarize. Do not take this class with a full load, it is too much of a commitment!
She is tough but despite that I really appreciate all I learned from her. If you take her do not get discouraged by her feedback. Set up time to meet with her or go to office hours. She will make a good writer out of you for sure.
Do not take Lisa Orta. I got an A in her class. She was so proud of me she asked me to be a part of a project where she would follow 5 students after graduating. When I told her I got into UC Berkeley she got upset and told me that I didn't deserve to go there. She belittled me and kicked me out of her project. No one should suffer the trauma I did
Tough class, but using unstuck AI and the textbook really helped me get through it. Attendance is mandatory, so be prepared to engage.
