She had a lot of fun with this class. She is a really cool lady. Tests were not hard basically told you everything that was going to be on the test. She did do clicker questions so attend class! A really enjoyable class
Is helpful and engaging during lecture. However, I feel she is extremely biased when it comes to gender issues, and teaches the class in such a way that is completely biased against men. She addresses the class as if it's entirely female, and disregards almost all issues related to men. She enforces very false feminists ideals as if it were science
She's really helpful and clear during lectures, willing to help students all the time. Her tests aren't all that difficult if you pay attention and do at least some of the reading. She also gives study guides which are super helpful before exams. She's pretty funny and cool too, which makes the class really enjoyable.
Interesting class. Lectures are mandatory because she requires clickers. 3 non cumulative tests that can be tricky; you definitely should study for each of them. Google docs helped me study. Lots of memorization. Extra credit is offered.
Every straight forward in lectures. brought up interesting topics every now and then exams will be fine if you go to lecture and study the power points
Extremely easy class, got an A without buying the book. Prof Rapalyea clearly is very passionate about the subject, so she teaches it well. However, she is extremely hostile towards men. I'm not even kidding when I say that I was offended sometimes by her perception of men. Class was 75% female.
Her lectures were copied straight from the book and the fact that she's deaf makes class discussion difficult. The material on the first and third exams was straight forward, however the second exam was crammed with more, difficult information. The online portion kind of helps, and the clickers make attendance kind of mandatory
Very easy class. Study what she presents in class and you will be fine! Test 95% from ppt and 5% from the book I read only for some chapters cuz those chapters were interesting! Clicker so attendance is a must! she is NOT hostile towards men! The topic itself is! She is very funny! topics include history to anatomy to LGBT to love and paraphilia!
Very engaged with her students. Is willing to be accessible to a giant 500 person class. Teaching is straightforward and tests are easy. Fairly engaging, doesn't just dryly regurgitate curriculum.
2 Midterms and a final with the final being another midterm. Make sure to show up to lecture because of clickers and listening to the information to add to lecture slides. Online homework. Make sure to read chapters bc she asks info that can come from there. If you read chapters, come to lecture, and do online homework, you can get a good grade.
I read the comments on ratemyprofessor and decided to take this class because I need a graded class! I thought this class was easy but no it's not the case. Professor Rapalyea is very good on teaching this topic. I have to say that I learn a lot. The class was fun, but if you're looking for an easy A, you better study your butt off.
Lisa is an amazing professor. I went to every single class with enthusiasm for her lectures. 3 midterms, 1 super easy paper, and clicker points; it's an easy GE class. The material is so much fun to learn about as well. This was definitely my favorite class and am now minoring in human development because of this professorclass. She is so sweet!!
Prof Rapalyea is one of the best professors UC Davis has. She is extremely helpful in class and outside if you attend her office hours. She really cares for the students and genuinely wants each of them to succeed. She makes the class very manageable. So if people don't do well, they clearly did not study or slacked a lot.
A great class that teaches you a lot. The readings and lectures have a lot of overlap but reading is still a must (esp. with the graded online textbook assignments). Easy extra credit opportunity, good and clear presenter. Questions are encouraged but since she's deaf, she may take a few tries to read your lips correctly. Some iClicker issues.
she is super cool a bad ass in a good way but super cool! and very understanding-super fair easy exams. no tricky questions just straight forwards. TAKE HER TAKE HER TAKE HER
Professor Rapalyea is a great lecturer and consistently updates the syllabus if needed. However, she is not great at responding to emails so definitely go to her office hours instead. She tries to help all students save money by talking to the Clicker company to help. Clickers are required and are helpful for practice. STRAIGHT FORWARD QUESTIONS.
I love her, she is awesome! 2 midterms and a final (very straightforward, no trick question), one paper (not too bad), participation (based off of clicker questions), quizzes (she allow 5 tries and record the best score), and an extra credit quiz. She is very fair. Now I want to take human sexuality with her because she is that great :).
2 midterms, a paper, and a final. We had clicker questions each class that counted as easy participation points. Also, we had chapter quizzes each week (given 5 tries to get the grade we want). The tests were very straightforward and no tricky questions. If you go to class, take notes, and study the study guide you'll do perfectly fine.
Really easy class. Basically study everything from her lecture slides which are often very straightforward. She tends to lead you by the hand and explains everything. There are also a few extra credit points.
Not an easy A! 3 exams(nothing dropped), 1 paper(5-8 pages), homework(15 of them), and mandatory attendance(clickers). She forces you to buy the Ebook($90). She graded the papers really harsh even though they were about the students own sexuality. Exams were not cumulative, but needed a lot of studying because there was a lot of material to cover.
Awesome Professor! Very clear and straight-forward about midterms/finals, participation and criteria. Her lectures are interesting and easy to understand/comprehend. There's two midterms, final, homework assignments, participation points and extra credit!
Get a clicker and go to every class for participation. Also mark in your calendar when homework is due because she does not tell you but it is on the website. If you listen, take notes on her power point, and review you should get an A. What she talks about is whats on the test. However, she does put out her opinion rather than fact sometimes.
Easy A as long as you do the HW and study. 4/5 because she forces you to buy the textbook. :(
Super easy class, lectures are fun and I actually *wanted* to go to them. HW and attendance are basically free points. Gives extra credit that's actually beneficial to your life. Exams aren't free A's but extra credit makes up for it. Learned more in this class than most of my major required classes.
Prof Rapalyea is hilarious. I felt a little weird taking a class on human sexuality and thought about dropping, but she made the class environment really comfortable and fun. She cracks a lot of jokes. Lectures are informative. Lots of homework (easy, but make sure you don't miss any!). Exams are very fair, she hands out great study guides.
3 midterms- all easy. Iclicker questions every time, so you cant miss class. The class itself is pretty interesting. I had a HUGE problem with the essay grading. The grade is based on the TA you get. My friends & I all got low 80s with Becky but every other TA basically handed out almost all As. They also lost someones very CONFIDENTIAL paper -.-
Grades consist of homework, clickers, a paper, and 3 non cumulative exams. Lectures and homework readings are important, as they are relevant to exam questions. Exams are not too difficult, as long as you study the given study guides. The paper is long, but not harshly graded. Do any extra credit offered, as it can be worth a lot of points.
Dr. Rapalyea is a very caring professor who wants her students to do well. She makes herself available should students need help with the material which is very interesting. As a woman of color with who has faced significant challenges getting to where she is she is truly inspirational and sets a fantastic example where dedication can take you.
Dr. Rapalyea is overall a really good professor. She made lectures interesting and definitely encouraged people to explore their own attitudes towards sex in a healthy , constructive way. Sometimes her answers to questions were less than thorough, but her expectations were very fair and it was overall a good class.
She's a solid professor that can make a joke. iClicker questions to mark attendance, and online homework that requires a textbook. She repeats herself often and tells the same stories, which can make lecture kind of a drag, but it's still worth going. The exams are okay (there's questions that involve stuff she barely mentions) so study for those
Dr. Rapalyea is the best professor I've had at Davis. Her class is not difficult as long as you do the online assignments, show up to lecture, and do the study guides for the exams. There are three non-cumulative exams and a paper, which was actually interesting and fun for me to write. I was actually excited for lectures too!
She's an amazing professor, cares about her students and what she teaches. Class is mandatory because of clickers, but it's not that boring, so not bad. There's also really easy hw assignments with the online book, 2 midterms, a final. And a paper which was relatively easy, I did it the night before lol. Overall it's chill and interesting class.
Dr Rapalyea is a caring professor and really makes an effort to get the material across to her students, especially the reality and impact of it on everyday life. Her tests require a fair amount of studying but are fair game. She has hmwk, 2 MT, 1 F, and 1 paper. Overall, a great class
She very self-righteous. She'll CONSTANTLY say things like "tHeRE's OnLY oNe oF meeeee" like every class when she hasn't graded our SCANTRON tests in two weeks! And she also nags about academic misconduct and delays the class for the few students that MAY be cheating (she can "sense" if you are). Overall an okay prof but an annoying person.
She is very passionate and serious about the material, but is also pretty funny at times and tells interesting stories. Exams are multiple choice, but can be tricky. She'll include questions from lecture, guest lectures, and the online textbook so make sure to set aside some time to study a bit. Some homework, 1 easy paper, and some extra credit
AVOID THIS CLASS.. Went throughout the semester and this professor was unable to provide the class with grades and she is completely UN-organized. Tough grader, but does not provide clear expectations on assignments. She doesn't give you time to complete one assignment before giving you another paper to do..
Wow. Where do I begin? Dr. Rapalyea is hands down one of the best professors I have ever had. Her class is interesting, straight forward and has fair exams. She genuinely cares for her students and enjoys teaching. I enjoy going to her class each and every session. She goes above and beyond to make sure students are learning and enjoying her course
This is probably the worst class I have taken at Davis. She's so frustrating. She spends at least a half hour per lecture ranting about grading and annoying students. I'm here to learn, not hear her opinions. It's week 10 and my week 6 paper is still not graded?! You must study EVERYTHING, the test questions are very specific. Not worth 3 units.
Was late to over half of the classes & begins EVERY class with some speech about how busy she was (hence the tardiness) and/or how she needs more time to grade assignments. 5 weeks to grade a paper and consistently missed OH's. Exams are MC with some curveballs but mostly straightforward. Get to class 15 min late to avoid her lengthy complaining!
she's a very nice, genuine person. However, I would never take a class with her again. She takes forever to grade assignments and always has an excuse as to why she has not updated canvas. It's unfair for students who need to know their grade but don't because shes taken on too much. She disabled grades on canvas all year and hasnt graded our final
Need to memorize a lot. Requires iclicker and textbook, expensive. Harsh grading. The prof like to send long meaningless email. The most ridiculous thing is to queue to get the paper back. The last time I saw such a long line was in Disneyland. Wait for more than 2 wks for the final exam grade. Guess who comes first, the Santa or the grade?
The class in itself is interesting and not difficult to study for. However, the use of clickers and the fact that the class is only offered 6:10-7:30 pm every quarter can be inconvenient. For Professor Rapalyea herself, she is unorganized, difficult to reach through email, and takes forever to upload grades. Id recommend a different professor.
Worst class I have ever taken at Davis and the worst professor I have ever had. Extremely unorganized, all she did was complain the entire time, was late to every class, just all around a terrible terrible professor. I took this class for an easy GE, but it was definitely not easy and she taught less than half of the material. DO NOT TAKE.
Prof Rapalyea is horrible at communicating with her class. She went MIA after the final ignoring emails and never inputting final grades. 2 weeks later she sent an email that didn't resolve any issues but said she would let us know her new OH to get papers etc. Long story short no OH were set and I still don't know how I did on the final or paper.
Never grades work on time . Always complains! She will feed you her sob stories for half the class and then rush to get her lecture in the second half. Very inconsistency and unorganized. This class should have been an easy A however she made it way more difficult that it was.
She's a nice lady but it's my 4th year at Davis and she's the single most disorganized prof I've ever had. I took that class in fall, it's February, and she still hasn't posted grades for our (scantron) final exam or paper. She takes so long covering some material that we don't to more more interesting parts of the course
There are clicker questions for this class so lecture is mandatory. You also have to write a 6 page paper on your sexuality thats 10% of your grade. I still never got a grade for my paper or the final exam, but managed a B+ for the course. Tbh I think she just had a rough quarter. The material is really interesting and informative though.
this class had a duo professor set up. taking her online was an absolute nightmare. super self-righteous-like it was somehow our fault that REEF polling is buggy. barebones slides so you need to attend lectures to know what the slides mean. (will only provide zoom links to missed lecture on the same day and you only had 48 hrs with it). NO NOT TAKE
Took this class online during COVID and I hated it. I found the class super boring. Lectures felt like they took forever, and you have to attend since they aren't recorded. She never finished on time so we were usually half a lecture behind. Preferred the other professor. However, the class was failry easy online.
nope. avoid. not only did we have clicker questions but they were graded based on correctness and i think thats a terrible way to run a class. made a ton of mistakes and was always behind.
Overall this course can cause major headaches. This can due to the professor's heavy exams, clicker questions that are not based on participation but on correctness, and the tendency to get behind and switching the schedule continuously. Expect to put in a good amount of work into this class.
One of my favorite professors, especially outside of class! The course is more enjoyable if you can relate it to yourself! Lectures didn't go as planned, but with the circumstances of COVID19, it's understandable. I found it inspiring when she opened up about her struggles as a student and it shows that she genuinely cares about her students!
I thought she was a fine professor. She had clear expectations and explained things well. Taken during COVID so maybe she was a bit frazzled by the online format but she seemed to not like getting questions during the lecture that would be helpful. Taken as a GE--mildly interesting.
I LOVE professor Rapalyea. She is so incredibly informative and supportive of students, and she does one-on-one office hours (even in zoom) so you can ask personal questions if need be. She is very open to all opinions, and sticks to the informative part of the course which helps a lot of people learn and understand other points of view
I loved Professor Rapalyea! I took this course for a GE, but ended up learning a lot more than I expected. Exams were very easy if you follow the study guide. The paper in itself seemed annoying at first, but fun as you got into it! I learned a lot about myself in this course.
Loved Rapalyea. Her Fall 2020 Quarter online was such a blast. It was my favorite class! Not only were the conversations fun, my classmates were all very nice and chill. You will be slightly behind on lectures and sometimes she'll go off topic about a something. She does use Reef to track attendance and does do clicker questions. Study well!
She is so badass! Her class was so enjoyable and informative. I always push people to take this class, and often refer to it. People who take this class without her are less happy. She is always willing to help explain things more, and fix incorrect points on things like clicker questions in office hours. Take her, you won't regret it!
I love this professor. Her class is structured well and the paper is based on a behavior you could improve on. While her instructions were not the clearest, she is more than willing to help, I went to OH and she basically helped me find exactly what I needed! Her exams really weren't difficult if you read and pay attention to lecture.
Prof Rapalyea was kind and helpful! She is very passionate about her teaching topics and is more than willing to help you during OH. She is understanding and accommodating. Graded on 2 exams, 1 paper, participation (Reef), homework. Exams were reasonably easy, make sure you read the book and pay attention during lectures.
The class (taught through Zoom) was straight forward and Professor Rapalyea helped with any concerns that came up. The paper and assignments regarding the paper were a bit confusing, but she did a great job clarifying and holding extra time to come and ask questions. Tests were super easy As. Homework was easy, but tedious.
She is amazing! Super informative and knowledgeable about the subjects and seems to really care about students. Attendance is a grade so show up, but lectures are interesting. Take good notes in class and tests will be fine. One paper that seems daunting but is actually really easy and had an A average in the class. Great class!! :)
Honestly dont take this class if you get annoyed easily, shell tell irrelevant stories that seam unbelievable and act like everything she says is an undeniable fact, or shell come in 10 minutes late proclaiming how unorganized she is and blame it on someone else. By far one of the most annoying people Ive ever encountered.
I learned a lot through Prof. Rapalyea's lectures. She is very funny, knowledgeable, and caring. It was a shame that we couldn't ask questions during class until the end of the quarter (a technical issue). Not an easy A but I was very interested in studying for this class due to the essential topics.
Professor Rapalyea always made it known that she would be willing to meet us outside of class just to chat, even when the quarter was over. The lectures were really interesting and the midterms were fairly easy if you memorize the study guide. There's only one paper mid-quarter. I recommend this class for people looking for an easy GE.
Don't take this class for GE credit. the tests are really tricky and participation counts through i-clicker so if you miss a class you're screwed. i had to miss a few classes because i was sick and she didn't care about my doctor's notes. she's always complaining about her inbox overflowing with emails but thats her fault for being so disorganized.
I rarely write on this website, but I had to tell other people that she's an amazing individual and do not miss the opportunity to learn about your and others' sexuality from her if you haven't learnt it already. I took it as my p/np ge but ended up getting a final score that's equivalent to A. If you show up&pay attention to class, do the writing,
super interesting class, i think everyone should take if you have the chance! you learn a lot about yourself + prof is chill but a bit disorganized. she does iclicker questions every class for attendance/participation. midterms are easy if u study from the study guides + 1 paper w/ a easy and broad prompt imo. lectures are pretty funny too
super amazing prof! lectures were interesting & exams were easy if you do the study guide. attendance is mandatory & she does iclicker q's each class for participation. she is a little disorganized but straightforward. 3 exams & 1 paper which had a broad topic & almost everyone got an a. v accommodating & cares about her students.
As long as you make an effort on the homework assignments and listen during lecture, passing shouldn't be an issue. A very informative and fascinating course, and Professor Rapalyea keeps you very engaged! Attending lectures is very mandatory to do well; skipping even a couple will only be painful in the long run. All in all, a great GE course.
Professor Rapalyea had multiple moments in which she seemed to lack organization or accountability particularly concerning emails. She had attendance as a sizeable portion of our grade through a pandemic and was unwielding in communication about said absences. However, her actual teaching was great and I had no complaints.
Very nice teacher, really seems to care about her students. Make sure to go to all the lecture because she takes attendance. Thankfully, lectures are interesting. Make sure to study for the tests, and you will likely get an A :)
Rapalyea was amazing! Not an easy A but if you read the textbook and pay attention during class, you can get a decent grade . At times she seems overwhelmed (with emails particularly) but her teaching is awesome, she definitely knows what shes talking about. Dont miss class bc your attendance/participation is taken with questions on clicker/the app
She's one of the most annoying and impolite people I've ever encountered. She gets impatient if you talk to her after lectures. The iClicker/REEF thing is also annoying because the internet in the classroom is poor and you need to hand in a printed form(with all the questions you missed) right after the lecture to get the (partial) points.
Imagine you get a full 6 pages of study guide for every exam, and you have to memorize every single term that she mentioned during the lecture, no recorded lecture, and this is only a 3 credits course
Her course mainly based on 3 exams. The most terrible thing is the study guide for the exam is always 6 pages with tons of questions. And her questions on both of the study guide and exams are far more difficult than her lecture PPT. Besides, mandatory attendance and no lecture recording plus a 6-8 page paper to write. Definitely not 3-unit class!
Smartbook assignments take a while, 1 term paper on your personal experience, 3 exams non-cumulative. Attendance is mandatory (iClicker questions but wifi never works), professor gets pretty overwhelmed by emails so if you screw up something go to OH instead. If you can keep up with the class you'll be fine, topics are easy. Should be 4 units tho.
Very interesting and insightful course, loved it! Attendance to lectures is mandatory due to the participation points, with couple pop quizzes. 1 broad topic easy paper. 3 midterms MCQ non cumulative. If you do the study guide and read all materials, you will be good. Lots of reading from the book, but interesting. Easy class, and recommend her!
Easy material but requires some work if you wanna do well. Definitely not a easy GE if you are looking for that but the topics are very interesting, take the class if you are interested in the topics but don't do it if you are only looking to take a chill class.
Personally, I loved Prof Rapalyea's class. I think every student should take it if they can. Attendance is mandatory and lectures can feel long, but she is very interesting to listen to and keeps you engaged. The exams aren't bad. The essay in the class is about your own life experiences. Exams are fair. Rapalyea is hilarious. Highly recommend.
Dr. Rapalyea is very knowledgable and hands-on. Expect emails almost daily. There is a LOT of reading (600 page online textbook in 10 weeks). There are 3 midterms, no final, and a 6-8 page essay. Lectures are fast-paced and content-heavy. The class is very interesting and is honestly essential info for everyone. Attendance taken via iClicker.
She is very passionate about her lectures, which are very engaging. Overall, I thought it was an educational and interesting class, I was hardly ever bored, which is rare. I definitely got more comfortable talking about sexuality and learned new things that I never learned in grade school. While there are a lot of readings, I think it's worth it.
Easy A if you're progressive & know how to use quizlet. Weight & difficulty of work is fair. 20% of grade is a suuper personal paper; only 1 prompt option. Lectures are slow but prof cares about material. Definitons can be simplistic. Needs to redo her email/grading system as it's disorganized and slow. Rude/arrogant at times but understanding.
I actually enjoyed the content in this class, which is kind of a shame bc of the prof. While I understand that she is passionate about these controversial topics, sometimes it became like sharing opionions that weren't asked for. Graded on 3 MTs with about 60-80 ?'s and a paper that should be an A (fight it if not). More than 3 units work for sure.
you have to write down everything she says in the lecture because the lecture slides only have bullet points and no specific information. 3 midterms study guides are excessive and not informative. You even need to look back textbook to search for answers. She even wants you to read more articles to understand her points and answer exam questions.
Professor Rapalyea is incredible. I don't understand why this class isn't mandatory. Super easy readings with open-book hw that's graded on completion, 1 easy essay, 3 midterms (final is the 3rd midterm). She's funny, caring, responds quickly, and is just overall incredible and really shows that this class means a lot to her. TAKE THIS CLASS!
prof rapalyea is a sweetheart and i thoroughly enjoyed her course. it's lecture-heavy but it's a college course, get over it (politely). i didn't attend every lecture but still got good grades on the exams because of the textbook, which is an interactive program you also get grades for. very informational and interesting course, would recommend. :)
Prof Rapalyea does not post lectures online, so you MUST show up to lectures to learn the material and get participation by iClicker. There is a LOT of outside reading that needs to be done and it will show up on the exams, so you actually need to do the readings. She is always overwhelmed, so it will take a while for her to respond if you email.
I enjoyed her class a lot. She is very funny. Exams were straight forward
very knowledgeable and respectable. mixes in some controversial things here and there but it depends on the listener i guess. gives detailed study guides so intense reading and note-taking is not required for exams (also posts her lecture slides, although some nuances are omitted, so it is worth jotting them down). one of the more useful classes.
a lot of reading and lengthy study guides, but the content is very interesting. she's extremely helpful during office hours
Highly recommended! Material is not only interesting but also directly applicable to your life. She puts a lot of effort into providing research to help you succeed, and is very fair on tests. USE HER LECTURE OUTLINES. Its a hefty workload for a GE. Expect an average of 6-9 hours per week. Definitely worth every second though.
Passionate and well-versed in the subject matter, open to questions and insights, humorous when it's welcome. Lots of reading, but fairly straightforward. Please attend the lectures: attendance is recorded, with iClicker questions for points. Some quiz questions asked about specific things from lecture, not just textbook material.
PARTICIPATION MATTERS. her lectures are pretty boring bc most of the stuff u learn is from her online hw Connect and its usually due BEFORE she actually covers it in class. so shes just repeating what the hw reading is. but she adds some more infos so u gotta pay attention bc it might be on those dumb exams which isnt in the reading. BORING CLASS!
Supposed to be a 3 unit course, however the amount of work assigned would make one think otherwise. So much weekly reading and she includes extra articles that "we may be interested in" like, lady, no. We have enough with you assigning two chapters coupled with homework every week. She uses so many anecdotes, to back up her "facts". steer clear.
There is alot of homework and reading, but I think it is worth it and I have learned so much. People say its too much work but it must be considered that this class is not "just a GE" for everyone. She is funny and engaging as a prof.Yes she pushes respect for human rights, but it is NOT political bias, its just advocating for all human beings.
I genuinely love this class and her approach. My only critique is her exams have an absurd amount of questions. The first midterm had 75 questions and the second had 80. Studying for the exams are tedious bc of huge amount of information. She makes it a safe space for all, especially marginalized individuals who are often targets of discrimination.
Very lovely professor!
Great professor and can be interesting at times, I definitely did enjoy the class and recommend anyone to take it. Stating that it is very lecture & test heavy , you have to study for the tests because some questions are confusing. Assignments take time to do. A paper that is 20% of your grade was actually fairly between easy and difficult to write
I have mixed feelings on her. She is extremely passionate and exhibits high proficiency in the subject. However, her opinions sometimes take over lecture and ends up making them out to be fact. Really straightforward exams and homework, just tons of questions for both. Tests are scantrons, lots of fine details pulled directly from lecture.
Dr. Rapalyea was an okay professor. The content is great, but you have to do a lot of reading in order to do well in the class. Her lectures were kind of boring; she did make it somewhat interesting by sharing stories. Attendance matters as participation makes up a good amount of the grade. Allowed a half sheet on 3 exams and were noncumulative.
Stuff is not hard, and she cares lots about her students.
The worst class I have ever taken. Too many test questions and details to study for. Lectures often gets political. No rounding/curving. Sometimes unclear pronunciation. Very strict with turning in assignments on time. Prof is nice and content is interesting. But still doesn't worth for 3 units. I regret so much that I didn't change it to P/NP.
Great lecturer but horrible organization. She never fixed my grades for partcipation (I had to submit forms because wifi wouldn't work most times) because she said she made "too many exceptions for me - I was at the ER one time". Why require participation if you won't deal with issues related to it outside of student control? Also grades very late.
This was a really great course and an easy A for me. The content discussed each lecture was extremely informative and easily digestible and I barely took notes. The homework and readings were super easy and fast in my opinion. I studied a couple of hours before each exam and still managed to get an A.
Took this class for GE credit and honestly I was pleasantly surprised. Her lectures are easy to follow and the material is not really complicated, it's a sex ed class. Professor Rapalyea appears passionate about what she teaches and gives you all the resources you need to be successful in this class. Her tangents are very informative n' interesting
I would 100% recommend this professor's class! I learned very much from this course; although attendance is mandatory it is all worth it in the end because it counts towards the grade- so just showing up boosts your grade. Her exams are non-cumulative, and rather easy to study for. She goes over "taboo" topics- better to learn than stay in the dark
One of my top classes at Davis! Easy A tbh. I always studied the day before and got an A on every exam (granted most of the info is stuff I already knew) The lectures were informative and the homework assignments didn't take too long to finish. She is always open to questions and has a great personality. I wish could take more classes with her!
I think human sexuality is a great class that everyone should take and it helps that professor Rapalyea is extremely passionate and knowledgeable on the subject. Do not miss the lectures tho, a good amount of the exam is on stuff thats only in lecture.
She is a great professor and keeps you engaged. There is just a heavy workload in the class but she offers a lot of support.
Prof Rapalyea was such a good lecturer. If youre a bio/ans major this class is easy. Some anatomy but not bad for medical students. Cheat sheets on exams, but have to go to class for iclickers, textbook reading assignments but reading isnt needed, just guess on questions and if wrong theres a button that brings you to where answer is in the text.
Very interesting class and material, great GE to take if you're interested in just learning about yourself. She does treat it a little harshly for a 3 unit class and there's some work you'll have to put in for tests, but you can bring note cards and they're entirely multiple-choice. Paper is a great opportunity too and not graded harshly.
Dr. Rapalyea is a rough lecturer and often fails to give up to date, objective information. The class itself is very easy; with a few papers and exams. When studying and writing the papers you will need to self study, as she often goes off topic and goes on tangents about her own experiences and opinions. Take what she says with a grain of salt.
Have a required assignment where she makes us detail our personal pubertal timing. Take that for what you will.
She was very funny and had many interesting hilarious examples about the topics we would cover. While using McGraw Hill was very annoying(concepts) the class overall was pretty easy.
I have mixed feelings. During lecture, sometimes I vibed with her; other times I wanted to scream. The grading is weird and most assignments used external sites. You only really need to worry about the paper. I recommend starting a month early. Exams are noncumulative with a cheat sheet. Study everything- anything could be on the exam.
Interesting class, however, she adds in a lot of her own opinions without really ever backing up her claims. Attendance is required as she uses iClicker. Extremely confusing grading so it is very hard to know where you are in the class. Class was not horrible, though.
Class is not mandatory but attendance is graded through iclicker. 3 tests, but you are allowed a half page of notes for each one. Discussion questions for each section and 3 deep dive writing assignments. If you put in the time you will be fine. Tests are fare and from the lecture/readings she assigns.
she does not ever use email, so you have to go in person for office hours, and when i went, she was so moody and was not very helpful. i only had one hour to eat lunch, but she was not ever sympathetic. she sounds very monotone and her lecture engagement isn't very effective (if your internet sucks, she will not give you points back).
I really enjoyed this class, the Iclicker participation was kind of annoying but I would just sit there and do other homework. She kept lectures pretty interesting and the content is very applicable to the real world. Would take again, easy GE as a stem major.
This class is a great GE that will actually provide you with real world information, so for that reason it is worth taking. I really liked the professor, she's kind, and very very accommodating and welcoming to students with disabilities. The way the class is graded is the most annoying part, you don't really know your grade until the end.
I LOVED THIS COURSE, honestly if you can take her TAKE HER!! Midterms are hard but thats a guarantee, follow the study guide and you'll be ok, one paper not too hard and the homework is pretty easy too. Dr. Rapalyea is very open to any questions and cares about her students. I wish I could take this class again.
Prof Rapalyea is a great prof, prob the best for this class. She has so much info to share that sometimes she doesn't finish her slides. I thought reading a whole chapter and completing comprehension mcq for each lecture was too much, made it feel like more than a 3 unit class. 2 midterms + 1 final all noncumulative, 1 paper, mandatory iclicker
Dr. Rapalyea is a really caring and passionate professor. Her lectures are super informative and her exams are very easy if you pay attention to everything she says. The homework is a bit much for a 3 unit class and it isn't too helpful--review her study guide and you're good. Geolocation is set up for iClicker, so you have to be there.
Lovely person to talk to outside of class and made a late night lecture somewhat bearable.
lol if you're a stem major this class will be nothing for you, simple A, BUT if you're a business major or just not used to memorization or just retaining lots of information every week, you'll prob not like it for a "3 unit class". Content wise very interesting, prof is rlly good/nice, 2 exams 1 paper (paper graded based on just trying)
Dr. Rapalyea was a breath of fresh air in HDE 012. The class was really interesting especially because of her interactive lectures and side stories. The class is pretty lecture and reading heavy but not too bad at all. There's one 10 page paper about your introduction to sexuality that's worth a good chunk of your grade and 2 midterms and a final.
This should be a required class for everyone at UC Davis. Took this class with friends on my dorm floor and loved it. Prof is amazing. "I don't care what you take away from this class as long as you learn some sex tips." Midterms were very straightforward and you're allowed a cheat sheet. Final paper was graded harshly. Take this class!
Very good professor
It is way more work than any other 3 unit class on campus. Sure the class is interesting and the teacher is cool but for the amount of work this class requires of you, it will never be worth it. Don't take this class. 3 exams and a 7-8 page paper and very long homeworks. Attendance and participation is also mandatory.
Professor Rapalyea is a knowledgeable and passionate lecturer. The class has a fair amount of work, but it's manageable if you stay on top of the readings and attend lectures. The exams are challenging but fair, and Unstuck ai proved to be a helpful study tool alongside the textbook.
This class was super interesting and although there is a fair amount of work that goes along with it, all of the assignments are graded very graciously. Professor Rapalyea is an amazing lecturer and always tries to make the content engaging and interesting. 10/10 would recommend HDE 012.
Disappointing class and lecturer, only recommend taking it if you have to fit the class into your schedule. She makes attendance mandatory with Iclicker questions and they are graded and you get no credit even if it's answered but you got it wrong. She is mean, boring, repetitive with her stories, and hard to contact outside of class.
I loved HDE 012 with professor Rapalyea. I wish this course was required for all students as it covers so much important info applying to everyone. Very manageable workload, fairly easy exams. She's very straightforward and doesn't sugarcoat things. Very nice and truly cares about your success in the course. Take HDE 012 if you have the chance!
Dr. Rapalyea is a fantastic professor for HDE 012. She is straightforward, and lectures in a very understandable way. The course definitely requires more work than a typical 3 unit course should in my opinion, but the content is fascinating and incredibly useful to life in general. The final exam is non-cumulative.
Really informative and clear when it comes to information and grading. The class was extremely interesting so attending was never dreaded. I do agree that it was a lot of work for a 3 unit course, but overall was pretty smooth if you paid attention and showed up. Final was non cumulative and the paper assignment was fun and graded easily
i rlly dont get how im failing this class and i missed the p/np deadline, im literally more stressed about this class than any other. shes a good teacger but i just cant bear not even knowing what my grade is until last min and missing the dead line for p/np. i feel like i have to study more for this class vs my stem classes lol
Such an incredible course!! Lectures were what I looked forward to the most every week!! Homework is okay, just make sure to stay on top of it. Exams were super straightforward and the study guides help a ton. Dr. Rapalyea is a great professor and super insightful. If you have the chance, definitely take this class!!
Even though it's a bit challenging, you can get an A if you prepare according to the study guide before the exams. You're allowed to bring a cheatsheet for the exams, and she also offers extra credit.
The subject was interesting and Dr. Rapalyea made lectures engaging and hilarious with stories. Reading is lengthy, and I wanted to read it all for personal interest, but it would take too much time so I browsed through. Exams are so easy-basic common sense (except the anatomy section) and info is worthwhile without focusing on numbers.
Professor Rapalyea is one of the best professors teaching the most amazing class. Three exams that are non-cumulative and easy. Make sure you take the class, it gives a better understanding of who you are as a human being. However, I think that with the amount of work we get, it should be a 4-unit class, not a 3-unit class. But, what can you do?
hi guys I swear to God, if you are a person with a strong learning ability, then go register for it! But if you are like me with a poor memory and not good at biology, please stay away! RUN! I did put effort but did not pass this course.A lot of content and knowledge points to remember...
This is the worst and most disgusting GE class at UCD. The professor is okay, However, it is compulsory to attend the lecture, as well as the iclicker grading in the class and the paper. My friends and I all applied for PNP, but we all got no pass!!! Dont register for is course,it will bring you unfortunately.
Professor Rapalyea is one of the most caring profs I've had here at Davis. She is very blunt, so she may come off as mean or intimidating but I promise she is super nice and will help you if you need it. She wants everyone to succeed in her class so just show up to lecture and study her study guides and you will be fine!
This professor is incredibly kind and clearly cares about her students. The workload is very manageable and she allows a half page of notes on exams. Her lectures are also engaging and fun. I would highly recommend her.
She is a great lecturer! I had her for 2 hours straight and didn't ever really find myself being bored. She gives you a small break in the middle as well. I think she deserves a better rating. We had 2 midterms and final (non cumulative) one paper, 2 reflection assignments, and some reading assignments but all fairly easy! I would take her again.
I really wanted to like her. She often talks down on her students saying things like “I bet you can't tell time on a clock, read cursive etc” she also made females raise their hand if they could change a tire. Makes students small and implies she is better than everyone. Lectures are long/heavy. Unnecessary for this course. Would avoid.
1. She poses questions to the class but tends to manipulate responses to fit her perspective, even when her claims are questionable. 2. Requires you to write a paper on a political decision/action (she makes her political stance very clear) 3. Takes forever to grade and you will have little clarity on your grade until end of the quarter
She was just okay. Very blunt. Long lectures. I wouldn't recommend and I wouldn't take again
I understand how she can receive low ratings but this professor overall is great. She's strict but shows she cares about your success as she does allow you to use a half cheat sheet (double sided) on all three exams that are noncumulative. Grade is unknown because she grades diff, but overall if you pay attention in her lectures you'll do good.
Prof. Rapalyea is okay. Not a terrible lecturer but also not great. Very blunt and accused me of not doing the correct makeup assignment though she sent me the outline/format herself, also tried to make me come in a day or so after surgery just to show her a doctor's note in person... so to each their own
Grades were turned off on Canvas and she manually does it at the end of the quarter. She was behind on grading most of the quarter to where I got no estimate until the last week. The TA's announced they would release the grades for the paper about 2 weeks before finals but that was never done. Tests included lecture-only and textbook material.
Dr. Rapalyea was extremely boring as a lecturer. She rambles and often does not have a point related to the lecture content, just personal stories. She also made inappropriate, biased remarks (e.g. had students raise their hands and answer what sports Asian people play. When someone said ping pong she said yes, but it's not a sport".
Wanted to like this prof but both classes with her were extremely disorganized. No clear grading criteria. Avoid Andrea Cordero as a TA. She didn't grade anything until the very end of the quarter, so no one could implement feedback. She completely lacks critical thinking in how she grades and doesn't explain how points are deducted.
Rapalyea is a good professor, but the class structure isn't the best. Class is mandatory and your grade will change a lot if you don't go. She locks grades till the end of the quarter, and is extremely behind on grading until grades are due after finals week. She does allow note cards for exams which is great. She's ok, but not the best.
Rapalyea is very blunt, dry, funny, and informative. She is not afraid to offend, she is anti-squeamish, and she makes you work for every single credit. That being said, if you like a prof with some character, and if you're willing to be uncomfortable and maybe have your ego challenged, you will value her class. I learned in her class.
Dr. Rapalyea was a wonderful professor! Her class was engaging and I feel like I learned a lot in it. There is one major research paper to be wary of (don't procrastinate on it you'll regret it) but overall as long as you pay attention and make a good cheat sheet for the exams her class is very easy and very doable. Highly recommend!
she's funny, clear on expectations, explains things well, this class covers such important things that most people misunderstand or just don't understand, everyone should take this class ! i took it as a ge but loved it
Lectures are extremely boring and she often rambles on and on about her politicized views. Homeworks are done for credit and not graded which is nice but the class has little assignments that determine your grade which you can't even see. Unbelievably political and a waste of your tuition dollars.
Always so angry and not at all understanding about grading. Allows a cheat sheet, gives study guide but requires you to know SO MUCH info per exam. I studied so much and wrote a in depth cheat sheet but still received bad grades on the exams. Low average and still no curve. Overall a horrible professor even though I was excited about this class.
Professor Rapalyea is one of a kind—blunt but memorable. She uses iClicker, gives take-home quizzes, and offers extra credit. One major assignment is a 5-page paper about yourself. Tests carry the most weight, but you can use a half-page cheat sheet. Lots of stories—stay focused if you want a good grade(I didn't lock in lol).
One of my favorite teachers!!! Her lectures were well organized and clear. She definitely cares about her students and the topic she teaches. She honestly deserves a much higher score. If you study for her class, you can definitely get an A. I looked forward to going to her class every day.
She's not bad but I don't understand why she teaches this class like it's an upper div. Her exams are weirdly specific despite filling my cheat sheet. She's also really behind on grading and you don't know what your grade is until the week of finals if even that. She's also very unclear as to what she expects from us, I've had worse profs though.
This class is SO MUCH work for a 3 unit class. We have 3 midterms, a 6-8 page paper, reading, mandatory lectures(none dropped) , and MH homework. She adds EVERYTHING possible to the study guides like articles, ted talks, and even guest speakers??? The professor literally does too much. Its not a difficult class but you need to put work in.
HDE012 was such a fun class. I enjoyed her lectures a lot and feel like she made it very entertaining. Attendance is mandatory through iClicker. She also has 3 exams but they are noncumulative which is nice. A lot of reading though plus a paper, but all in all it wasn't bad. Just show up and do the work.
Dr. Rapalyea was amazing! Her lectures were super funny & the class is really doable for anyone I think. There were three non-cumulative exams, a paper, and weekly reading assignments from McGraw Hill. I'm a freshman & took this as one of my first classes and it was super great, would recommend :-)
Truly an awesome class, but a bit reading-heavy (3-4 hours per week). I recommend that everyone take it, as it's not too difficult and covers essential topics (especially if you're planning to start/already are in a relationship). Dr. Rapalyea really cares about each student and has great office hours. Go in willing to work, and you'll get an A.
Way too much work for a 3 unit class. The paper assignment was so vague and they graded it so harsh even though she provided absolutely no rubric or grading criteria to follow. Besides that exams are pretty easy and are a lot of common sense questions.
This is my favorite class of Fall Quarter so far. If I can change I'd make it a 4 unit class because the amount of work you have to put in is actually more than 3 units. But they are all necessary for your understanding. I wish I had a chance to take the course earlier, it can actually help you to understand more about yourself as a sexual being.
I love Dr. Rapalyea so much. The class can be a little difficult since there's a lot of reading, but most of the concepts are pretty easy to grasp and you can have a cheat sheet for exams (all multiple choice and final is non cumulative). Lectures are very engaging. Don't take this class if you're a conservative, you won't like it.
I loved her HDE class, it was very interesting for sure and she made jokes too which made the class better. She does assign many readings but its honestly not that bad because the readings are interesting (at least in my opinion!!) 10/10 would recommend taking this class and would take it again if i could!!
