good prof, but makes you work for the grade, especially on tests - READ THE BOOK
No Comments
Horrible teacher! Acts like you should be honered to take her class. RUN!!!
very thorough and requires extra work besides tests. Great professor!
evil.
Not an easy course, but definitely informative and helpful. one of the college's best! VERY student centered. you do need to come to class and read the book!!!
Gives a lot of extra credit opportunities. NO FINAL EXAM. Great class

She is a feminist with an attitude. Tons of reading and a big paper. Also requires volunteer work. Take a different prof or sit through hell. Feel sorry for her kids
She is an excellent teacher. Interesting class. Read the book and take notes. Great maymester class. We had interesting assignments. Be prepared to hear feminist talk though. I would definitely reccomend.
She is terrible! Extremely hard and her tests are sloppy. Don't take her!
This course is fairly difficult. I got a B in the course, but I studied my butt off! She is pretty nice though. I would recommend that you take her; she knows a lot and she is my advisor!!! So read, study hard, and prepare to write a huge paper (7pages). But she is not bad.
I took this professor awhile back, but got to talking to some students and realized she hasn't changed. She was without a doubt a large component in why I did not do psyc. as a major. The volunteer work is good for you, the tests are bad for you. She is willing to help if you want it. Suck it up!
Very nice and caring professor. Gives 4 tests and 1 paper. Volunteer or go to campus talks for extra credit. Read the book! Tests come more from book then lecture but are not too bad.
Class is easy, tests are very hard. Interesting class, I liked Mrs. Ross but it was a very hard class. Does give extra credit opportunities
her feminist views overshadow her teaching. Kind of gets on my nerves. boring class, easy paper assignments, easy tests, lots of reading. take someone else if you can.
RUN!!The material for her class is so easy, but she manages to come up with the trickiest way to ask you a question. Grades papers strictly, will take off points b/c of a comma etc.(petty) Tries more to trick you than teach you. DO NOT TAKE HER SERIOUSLY>>>>>
Very feminist. Amusing at times. Didn't like her as a professor. And yes... for personal reasons. Tried to tell me my paper was turned in late, when I was one of the first people to turn it in! Study hard... or even better, just don't take her.
The 1st class i took with her i got a D because i didnt try and never went to class. The 2nd class i got a B because i put the effort in. She is fairly liberal in her views, but she is fair and very passionate about what she does. One of my favorites & one of the better profs at CofC.
Doesn't take attendance, going to class is a must, and read the book. Likes extra credit stuff and volunterring, and let's you tell her what grade you think you deserve. I had a bad semester, barely went to class, and came out with a B because I told her I thought I deserved it. I liked her.
very nice woman but questions on test are confusing and she doesn't really clarify what she wants u to study..all is fair game. Papers are easy if you can write somewhat well. I wouldn't take her again but she isn't that terrible once and it is interesting material.
Very fair teacher, if you come to class and read the material you will do great. Has office hours and is willing to help you. Wish I could've taken her for more classes! If a psych major a must take teacher!
Psych of Gender. This was one of the best classes I took and Dr. Ross was great. Take the class. It's so interesting. :)
essentially one of the best professors i have ever had. she's incredibly easy to approach, and is really willing to meet with you if you don't understand. gives excellent notes, has a whole lot of experience and passion, and the discussion in the class is really interesting. pretty liberal, but being conservative won't affect your grade.
All sorts of amazing. This class made me think more than any other. Very strict about punctuality but otherwise an easy, reasonable grader. Tests and work load are relatively easy as well. Material is interesting and thought provoking. Please do yourself a favor and take her!
really stimulating course
I enjoyed this class. Big on discussion, it's okay if you don't read the book before each class, but you definitely need to for the exams! Exams were kind of hard, but fair. A lot of assignments, but they were parts of the paper due, so it made you stay on top of the paper. Some times lecture would get behind, so the next class we'd rush a lot.
nice teacher! very willing to have class discussions instead of lectures only. i learn easier with examples and she gives a ton. tests are pretty challenging, but as long as you come to class and keep up with the reading (read ALL of it- a lot of the test comes from the reading that you don't discuss) you will do fine in this class!
Dr. Ross always keeps the class engaged by telling stories and encouraging discussion. Class is lecture-based, but she will test you on things not covered in class, so read the textbook before exams. Tests are not easy, so study hard! Lots of outside papers that aren't worth many points, so it seems like a LOT of work. Fun class though, take her!
REALLY sweet woman, but her tests are so so so hard... you MUST read the text book (yes the whole thing) but she is such a character!!! I loved her class...except for the tests
I love Dr. Ross. I declared my psych major and asked her to be my advisor after taking this course. Shes great and losts of great class discussion. but its true what everyone else says about her tests - must do the reading. i worked really hard (did poorly on the first exam) and ended up with an A-
I loved Prof Ross! She is incredibly interesting and you discuss a lot so its not straight lecture. READ the book or you wont do well. She is hands down the best Psyc prof. I've taken! If you get the chance then take her class! You'll learn a lot.
Dr.Ross is ok. I was a little pissed about cost of the "text" books, because you can not sell them back. ALOT of READING..TONS.She also makes you do community service..yea idk i didn't do it, brought my grade down but didn't understand forcing someone to volunteer. if your a big feminist take it... if not.. the ****ing might get annoying.
She tries hard to engage everyone and is interesting. BUT her tests are impossibe. I studied for hours and failed miserably. She said we needed to read but everything on the test would be covered in class. DEFINATELY a lie!she has a way of making the easiest questions tricky so you miss the stuff that you actually knew.Avoid her at all costs!!!
Okay so she's quirky and entertaining so the class is enjoyable but her tests are ridiculous. Tons of stuff from readings that are never explained. Plus the tests are really long with an essay so you have to rush and don't get to spend the time you need on the multiple choice.
Professor Ross is great! Her lively personality keeps class interesting. Her tests are challenging, but not impossible to do well on. Attendance isn't mandatory, but if you go to lecture you will do much better on the exams (6). Her exams come from her powerpoints(which she sends to you) and the book. READ THE CHAPTER.
she's nice and all, but her class is tough. her lectures only go over half of whats on the test. she gives 6 huge tests that are really hard. don't take unless you are willing to study a lot.
I'm just so dissapointed in this teacher. I think she expects too much from the students. She covered almost the whole text book we used and included some of her own reasearch. If I could fire this prof, I would.
I loved her. You will never fall asleep during a class- interesting material; if you go to class you should do well on exams- she does put in some questions from book too-you will do better to find major points in book- I really enjoyed this class
I loved her. You will never fall asleep during a class- interesting material; if you go to class you should do well on exams- she does put in some questions from book too-you will do better to find major points in book- I really enjoyed this class
Run as far as you can. This teacher is impossible. Does not teach the material needed for the test. Spent atleast 3 hours PER NIGHT for this class. RUN AWAYYYY!!!!
i love the class but the tests are very challenging and you have to do volunteer work.if youre willing to work hard and read then take the class, otherwise,do not take her class
Miserable class, tests are impossible. you have to do 8 hours of community service and it's mandatory, write 4 or 5 papers, and tests are frequent. this class was taken to get an easy A but i was extremely wrong. don't take this class with dr. ross.
i have taken 2 classes with dr. ross and i really do not like her classes. her powerpoints are useless and her lectures are extremely hard to follow. the class was always confused about what she was talking about. the only way i did well on the tests was because i read every chapter in the book. mandatory volunteer service is part of your grade.
Wonderful teacher! Very enthusiastic. Loved her
gives an unrealistic amount of work. You literally look at the syllabus and say "WHAT?!. She gives 4 essays over the course of the semester, 1 final essay that is based upon 8 hours of MANDATORY volunteer work. Textbook reading is mandatory, chapters are roughly 60 pages each. tests are impossible. she does not help her students. DO NOT TAKE HER.
It's fun while you're in class and she's really enthusiastic, but the tests are IMPOSSIBLE. I understood all of the material and still couldn't break a 75. There are 5 tests and 6 papers, 1 of which is based on 8 hours of mandatory volunteer work. Ridiculous amount of work for this class. Don't recommend.
if you love reading 120 text book pages a week take this class. If you love writing essays that will be harshly graded take this class. If you love taking tests that are impossible to pass, take this class. textbook readings are mandatory to pass the class. volunteering also mandatory. listen to the bad reviews THEY ARE ALL RIGHT
OMG. I loved her for Psych of Gender.I could never pass a test and but they weren't weighted heavily. I got a B. Social Psych, however, the grading percentages suck. Most of your grade comes from test. You will never pass her test, ever. The papers are easy. The impossible test are not. They'll mess your GPA up. Take her for Gender, but not Social.
first, this was an FYE therefore it should have been easy, lets just say.. total opposite. 10 hours of Community service & a paper on it Power points & lectures are hard to follow Tests are very hard & hard to prepare for Easy paper grader if it's proof read Be ready to read ALOT Like her as a person, don't recommend taking her for a class
I've taken WGST 200 and PSYC 350 with Dr. Ross, and I've never had a problem with her. As long as you do the readings and talk in class, your participation is set, and just follow her essay guidelines. She is hilarious and an interesting lecturer. I've loved both classes with her! She's only hard if you put forth no or little effort.
She is such a caring professor and she LOVES the material. The tests are hard but I made an A- test average for studying usually only two nights before. READ THE TEXT BOOK AND USE THE ONLINE QUIZZES. She takes some questions from that site so you're dumb if you dont use them. It isnt an easy class but she is by far the best Social Psych Professor
Dr. Ross is a great person, but the class was ridiculous. I took it as part of the Learning Community. Expect a LOT of reading, and participating in class is crucial. She gets off topic a LOT, and she'll assign pop quizzes a lot when people don't answer her questions. I had an A in every class except for hers. Quizzes are heavily based off notes.
Took her for WGS, she's super passionate about the topic and is a really awesome woman in general. She's pretty laid back and really wants the students to share stories/experiences so a lot of time in class is spent on people discussing their own experiences which is awesome. And she's really good at seeing both sides of the argument
I took this class for my major and was very excited. I like the material, the way the professor teaches and approaches such things, not so much. Heads up anyone with a disability and wants to take a test(exam) through SNAP with her. Don't do it. She never turned in my test to SNAP the day i was supposed to take it. Save yourself from her
Professor Ross is an obvious expert in her field and somehow still manages to be the most approachable, considerate human. Her social course consists of a wide range of topics. She also encourages interesting discussions that are actually applicable to our daily lives. Social was not an easy class but if you read and attend class you will do well!
Really great professor and super cool class. She can be a little unorganized but her lectures are solid. Fair grader on papers but you won't do well on quizzes if you don't study. Quizzes come from lectures, notes, and reading. Only real downside is the mandatory community service assignment. 10 hours of community service and an paper.
Really great professor. She makes social psychology really interesting and her tests are more than generous. She gives you many opportunities to have a good grade.
She assigns like 4 6 page articles to read each night, super detail oriented on her pop quizzes and her tests are basically memorizing ridiculous amounts of statistics. She's sweet and passionate about the subject but has incredibly high expectations. You have to read to pass the class and the textbook is incredibly necessary.
Dr. Ross is a great person. You can tell she really cares about what she's teaching. Her lectures are interesting and inspiring. Make sure you go to class and really study the notes. There is a lot of reading and there may be pop quizzes on it. The quizzes are difficult so make sure you have a grasp on the material. Overall, a great teacher.
TONS of reading in the course and very difficult quizzes (5 of them.) Lisa is a good professor and keeps class interesting but is a tough grader and you're always unsure what grade you'll get on her papers (3 of them.) Participation matters!! I still would recommend this class because I definitely learned a lot but its a tough one.
Run like the plague! Prof Ross has the right intentions, but there are tons of assignments and she isn't consistent grading. Also she is a huge liberal, if you are anything but far left in your beliefs you will feel alienated 90% of the time. Oh and there is a volunteering project that will sneak up on you. Wish I had taken someone else.
At times she can be one of my professors because she cares so much about the subject and wants to see you do well. She is a very tough grader but if you do all the readings and study well, you will be fine. Participation is a very big thing and she will give difficult pop quizzes if she thinks students are not doing the readings.
do not take this lady if you do not plan on majoring or minoring in psychology. she is the WORST professor at cofc. she is extremely rude, instructions are not clear, and requires you to go to bogus school events. DO NOT take her if youre tryna have an easy semester.
Dr Ross is the most liberal women Ive ever meet. Grades papers harder than English professors. She is very her way or the high way, so I felt like my opinions didnt matter as much. Get ready to read, take pop quizzes, and participate in class. Makes you have mandatory community involvement, gives extra credit opportunities though.
Dr. Ross is the BEST professor I have ever had at the College. She is dedicated to both psychology and WGST, and wants you to do well. She has high expectations for her students because this is COLLEGE, so if you want an easy semester, or plan on slacking, don't take her. For those of you who actually want to learn, she is the absolute greatest!
Super outdated lectures. I took this class expecting a psychology of what exactly gender identity is, but it ended up being endless lectures of random studies on men and women in the 1990s. Grades extremely harshly (beware of the first paper). Dont bother buying the textbook. I bought it and never even read it. Nice person outside of class.
Amazing and super caring professor. The class was super interesting and so were her lectures. She gives reverse exams, so you don't really have to study and you can get full credit on test corrections. Kind of a lot of outside stuff to do (volunteering, papers, etc) but none are super hard. Very responsive on any papers you turn in.
Nice woman who cared very strongly aboout our academic success and pushed us toward it. Kind of frustrating at times because tests were extremely difficult. Also she has a pop quiz policy if participation is bad and the pop quizzes are 2 questions each. At the end of the day she'll make you work but if you do what she asks you'll be fine.
I am a psych major and enjoyed psych until I took this class. Her tests are the most ridiculous tests I've ever taken she tries to trick you on almost every question. I did not learn from her test, I just ended up being more confused after. There is much more to say but I dont have enough characters to write everything I could. AVOID HER CLASS
Took her FYE class and it was the most stressful thing ever. She assigns a ton of readings and you're expected to read them. If not enough participate during reading discussions, she starts her pop quiz policy. Hard grader on papers and there are a lot of them. Test questions can be very confusing. A lot of outside engagement required
She is funny and a nice person but her tests dont make any sense. They are very tricky. She doesnt upload any of her PowerPoints on oaks. She is harsh grader when it comes to papers. I loved psychology until I took this class. If i could go back & drop it, I would have. AVOID THIS CLASS
Put alotta effort in this course when expecting to not have to- i literally took her FYE class? Had to volunteer for 10 hours and write a crap ton of papers. If you don't like to speak in class / if you don't show up you're failing. w/ 3 absences& talking everyday40 participation grade. Not good at keeping up with her own requirements set. hw 24/7
I'm not sure why this course requires a textbook because the exams reflect her personal opinions and powerpoints that contain outdated data derived from decade old sources (assuming they WERE accurate to begin with.) The exams and textbook contradict each other. Not an articulate professor by any means. Grades grammar incorrectly as she sees it. F-
You have to go to class and take good notes, things covered in class will show up on the quizzes! Theres are a ton of requirements for the class and its a pain but it's manageable. You have to work really hard to get a good grade in this class and I would skip it if you have alot going on outside of school.
Loved this class! Great professor who has a lot of knowledge and knows how to keep the students interacting. There are a lot of small assignments so you actually have to do the readings but its not hard. I would recommend the class! All tests and quizzes are based off the readings.
I'm usually an A/B student but this class did NOT reflect my proficiency, nor did it reflect my large interest in this topic. I did ALL the reading, lecture, notes, and STILL did terribly! SHe's a super tough grader and doesn't specify what will be on the quiz- syllabus sucks!
Dr. Ross is an amazing person but a really hard professor. I took her for my FYE class so I was expecting it to be easy to manage, it was not. Lots of readings, pop quizzes, confusing feedback, difficult papers, and HARD quizzes. She does give lots of extra credit opportunities and is super accessible outside of class.
This class is an easy A if you put in the work. Discussion posts count for a lot of your grade so as long as you remember to them. The material is conveyed very well and you know what is expected on your assignments. She gives lots of opportunities for extra credit.
Her class is very challenging and she grades off of her own political views. If you have the same views as her you will probably be ok. She grades harder grammar harder than any other english teacher I have ever had. She is willing to help you raise your grade with extra credit but is harsh and snappy.
Dr. Ross is extremely knowledgeable about the content and provided many useful and relevant examples within current life. The class was structured in a "flipped" setting, so lectures were delivered via VoiceThread, and class time was used for discussion and clarification. As long as you come to class prepared and willing to learn, you will be fine!
Dr. Lisa Ross is one of the worst profs I've ever had. She doesn't care about the student and she is an awful teacher. I don't know how she's still employed. She is unhelpful and confusing. I would rather teach myself than take notes from her. STAY FAR AWAY! You will suffer in her class and so will your GPA.
She's awesome take her if you get a chance, theres a lot of reading that you NEED to do for quizzes and class discussion but if you do the work- you'll have fun in class
Attendance is a crucial part of her classes, but she makes class more like a discussion so it's easy to get your attendance credit for the day/week. I really enjoyed taking her social psych class - I learned a lot more with her style of teaching rather than lecture style. You can tell shes very knowledgable in her area & really cares abt u learning
Professor Ross taught us a lot of good things, I loved her class. You need to be ready to put in work. There are readings you need to do and she will give weekly/biweekly quizzes on OAKs. I would definitely take her again. Sometimes she can be tough, but if you are interested in the class or need it, definitely get her.
Dr. Ross is awesome. She is an empathetic professor who clearly cares about students understanding and engaging in the subject. There is a lot of work in the class, but there are no cumulative exams. Instead, she does weekly quizzes and a fair amount of short papers. I learned a lot and found the class very low-stress and informative.
Dr. Ross was so great for Env Psyc. She cares so much about her students and the world. She does require community engagements, but that makes sense for the type of material being taught! I have learned so much about the environment and psychology in this course. Her class really isn't hard if you put in the effort and show up to class.
I'm not even finished with this course yet and it's one of my favorite classes I've taken at CofC. Dr. Ross is very passionate about the material and teaches the class "flipped," so you do the work beforehand and then discuss during class. It has been so interesting and engaging and the class set-up has really allowed me to absorb the material.
Dr. Ross is a lot. She's the TOUGHEST grader, her lectures are mandatory, if you don't participate daily you won't pass. Can be very condescending at times and overall would never take another course from her. If you're a freshman looking to take a class with her, don't. She makes you want to drop out.
I love Dr. Ross; she is such a kind professor and genuinely cares about students and their success. She is a tough grader, but if you follow directions/syllabus for the assignments, you will be fine. PARTICIPATE IN CLASS DISCUSSIONS! There are a lot of mini papers, but if you follow the syllabus, you will get an easy A. Cannot recommend her enough!
Doctor Ross treats the FYE class as if we are studying to get our PHD. We have had 4 papers, quizzes every Friday, and a group presentation. Lots of reading, so be ready to read because quizzes are created from the readings. Overall, for an FYE this class is way too much especially on top of having a full schedule of other classes.
I took her for an FYE class and it was honestly very difficult to keep up with on top of other classes. PARTICIPATE IN DISCUSSIONS. I cannot stress that enough. She grades very tough on her papers, especially for plagiarism and APA.Quizzes every Friday. Be ready to work for this class, but if you talk and follow the syllabus you will be fine.
She is a very passionate teacher and is very nice. However she does not post exact guidelines for essays, some will be only two sentences of instructions. She does not allow make up work and assignments will not be posted for you to see. If you have a job this is not a class to take as she expects you to treats it like a masters program.
Ok, so she's cool but she's a tough grader! If you do your work in time and put thought into what you're turning in, you'll be fine! Good lectures!!! Sometimes rubrics can be unclear and instructions repeated and changed so watch for that! Don't let it get to a point where you have pop quizzes just read and participate!!!!!!
Professor Ross was defiantly a tough professor. Participation matters in this class since the lectures are discussion based so if you are not comfortable speaking in front of the class then this course may be challenging for you. Overall, she was an amazing professor and I did learn a lot in her class.
She is an alright professor and her lectures were quite interesting. I took Environmental Psychology and learned a lot. But she is a very hard grader. One thing that really made me hate this course was her quizzes. They were always extremely poorly worded or included some annoyingly obscure content that one will never need again.
Very passionate about her work and loves interacting with the class. No midterm, no final. The only complaint is that she grades essays harshly on grammar, despite the class being for gender studies. I didn't show up often but received a 100% on participation.
