She makes work for the sake of work that doesn't correlate with knowledge or success. Her testing concept is good (using essay & sentence answers) but her grading is wrong. She demands answers to questions she doesn't ask--and penalizes for idiotic issues of format versus content. A bad teacher.
Very hard teacher but knows subject really well
Extremely tough professor...if you are not a science/pre-health/dent/vet/etc major, take another natural science class to fullfill your G.E. If you are willing to put in the work effort you will do fine. She is approachable in my opinion (despite the other ratings). You will either like her or hate her, but truly be willing to work hard.
Lisa is a great teacher, but you have to want to be in the class or you wont make it. Study study study ... that is the key!
Tough. Fair. Better stay on top of work or you're sunk! Attend class and be on time. Interesting lectures. Lab is fun

Avoid this one at all costs. Take micro at CSUSB, RCC, or Valley College.

This is an extremely challenging class. It was the hardest "C" I have ever earned in my life. She is a good teacher, but expects a lot out of her students. This is not a class that you can just wing. Do not take another science class while taking this one and make sure that the rest of your load isn't too heavy
I forget the actual numbers, but I took both semesters of her Cell & Molecular Biology class. Very tough class, but well taught and full of information. You'll have to work hard to earn a good grade.
Played videos on days she didn't feel like teaching. Tested on stuff not in required textbook or in lecture material. Tested out of an outdated textbook (editions old)! Too much busy work for too little points. Loved biology before taking her class. Now I am looking into a chemical engineering major. Hate that she makes me want to change majors!
this professor expects way too much. If you want to get a C in this class, do not plan on taking other classes at the same time and do not plan on working at all. She is rediculous
One of the best teachers at Crafton.
One of the nicest teachers on campus. If you want to learn from the best take her class. She is very helpful and has a great sense of humor. This class is hard but interesting. Do not listen to prior comments they have obviously have never taken a college science class before.
Lisa was the most helpful teacher that went out of her way to make sure her students understood the material. Studying is the key. If you are unsure, be sure to ASK otherwise you will never get the help you need. She has the biggest heart and understands being a student isn't easy. When you have a problem let her know and she will works with you.
nice, but class is hard. You can not miss or be late.
If you do your part: studying and homework, you will do really well. She's very funny and I learned alot. Yes she is strict about certain things but no she is not "hard" or "mean" seriously. If youre lazy you will hate ANY class youre in. If youre punctual you will really like Lisa's class. I liked the fact that she is balanced.
You must know going into her class that it will be one of the hardest classes you will ever take. But ask anyone who has taken Microbiology elsewhere and they will say the same thing. The material is just difficult. Plan on studying in 2-3 hr blocks a week before each test and attend every lecture. I did this and got an A. Fun teacher.
You only use the book for definitions. You learn lots, but not an easy class. You must study and keep studying til the end. She is very fair and compassionate but expects a lot from you. She has short fuse but gets over it fast. Don't take with another hard class.
She still uses a chalkboard.. wtf its almost 2010 use powerpoint so you know wtf you lectured on. we got to the final and she didnt cover 5 questions that was on the final. First half of the class is hell, after that its all down hill.
Do not buy the textbook. Never used it. Purchase the lab manual and she will give you a hand book with all the notes for the semester. Very hard course - not really an introduction as so much as a prerequisite for the Respiratory Program. No Power Point. Strict on attendance and cell phones. Hard for 2/3 then downhill. Fall 2008 final was wonky.
Oh come on, don't be such babies! She was as straightforward about the material as any professor could possibly get. As a matter of fact, she gave everyone all the answers and our only responsibility was to memorize it. Oh, wow, tough. And because of that, It was not a difficult class. Unless you are lazy and/or don't know how to read.
Lisa is an awesome professor! Her class is difficult, but if you put in the work and time you learn quite a bit and its interesting. Lisa is always helpful, very clear on what she expects, and very informative! Great class to take and taught by a professional, very competent and knowledgable individual.
worst class I have ever taken, never in my life have I ever has a teacher who worked so hard to fail students, she does not care about you or how hard you work. I have a BA graduated with a 3.75, raising three children alone, She is very unapproachable!!! I know more about her alpaca's then micro!! Will never even step foot in her class room again
super easy. barely read the book.
You people complian to much. I have taken micro with two teachers from RCC and they were horrible. Lisa is hard but a very good teacher. Be prepared to study ALOT but come on it is a hard class. I would take her again if I could. She wont let you slack off but she does curve.
Lisa Shimeld is an excellent professor. Slakers only will give harsh criticism of this class. You do need to study but she makes it very interesting and fun. She is completely clear on all levels with no surprises.
Although she is very rude at times and has a temper, her class was nto that bad. She tests you on exactly word for word what she lectures on. The micro teacher at RCC was horrible compared to lisa. Lisa stays on task and hey, if you cant show up on time to class your ass should get booted. Make flashcrads and memorize everything in notes!!
avoid her as much as you can. she is not a nice person.
She is tuff but actualy I learn alot from her. You cant take this class for granted. It tuff make sure to take only a few fluff classes with this one or your toast.I cant belive I learned so much and am enjoying it allot.
Lisa is a GREAT instructor! Make no mistakes though, her class is tough, but if you study, it's possible to pass! BE PUNCTUAL or your done! She answered all my questions and returned phone calls! Oh yah, for the record, I'm NOT "white", I'm an obvious looking Latino male. The negative people must be slackers looking for an easy "A". She's LEGIT!!!
A really interesting class, but there's no time to slack off! Tests are pretty hard, but she's a great prof.
Lab and Lecture do not match. Her test are very, very hard. I had to drop the class because I could not keep up with the class no matter how much effort I put in. She is a very nice person even though she is strict.
She is very tough, but if you really love microbiology, you will do just fine. Be ready to put 3 hours of studying for each hour of lecture.
This is the teacher you want to take if you want to learn and retain info.Negative comments only come from students who are not serious. Lisa has high expectations of her students and expects you to be responsible and studious, the same way you need to be in your career of choice. She means business but is very approachable.
I think she is great teacher. She is also funny. Any class that is 5 units will be tuff but if you put the work in and have a good study group you will do well. Also lab and lecture do match up!
You must record lectures- tests are word for word. No surprises, just ENORMOUS amounts of data to memorize. If you lack study habits and discipline before this class you will have them if you make it through to the end. A no-nonsense, professional instructor. No hand holding- buckle your seat belts!
Surprisingly great teacher. I learned a lot. It was the hardest I have ever had to study for an C though. She is very helpful, kind, and understanding.
Lisa is an awesome instructor. This is a tough class but if your serious about getting an A you will succeed with her. She is very helpful and fun. You will leave this class with a very large amount of knowledge. She tells you exactly everything you need to know for her tests. It's very easy to earn an A if you follow her directions. She is GREAT!
Lisa is such an Awesome teacher. She is so helpful! As long as you study you will get a good grade! I had so much fun in her class. One of the best teachers I have had!
Lisa is a GREAT teacher! She has you write down notes so you learn the material. She talks slow enough though. She gives you EVERYTHING you will need to pass the test! Take her for lab over Burns. Burns talks a lot, she is nice, but lisa is better Lisa doesn't waste time She is very clear about what you need to know! I took A&P and this and got a B
Good teacher,I would take her again and recommend her. She is way better than the teacher at Valley
I took this class at Valley first and didnt do well. I dropped and took it with Lisa and she is much much better. Take Lisa for lecture and Kapoor for lab, thats what I did (he's funny).
Micro is not an easy class. Lisa knows her stuff and students dont understand that if your going to have a career in the medical field you NEED to understand this subject well. Lisa is a great instructor and challenges her students. If your looking for an easy A this isn't the class for you, and you should seriously reconsider your career goals
Actually I have Lisa for lab this year and she is not so bad. She does give all the information needed to pass her exams. I have Kapoor for lecture and the class is hard he is also very helpful but they don?t give the impression that an A is easy to get in the class. But if you follow the study guides and work hard you will do well.
if you do not want to study then do not take her class. she expects you to put in the effort. if your an idiot who just likes to show up to get participation points than u'll fail this course. she's a great teacher and to those who say otherwise are the students that had to drop or failed-like they should have, and i'm a 40 yr old returning student
Amazing professor. yes it is a hard class. its a medical microbiology class. duh. i really enjoyed this class. probably the best professor ive had so far. just attend lecture and take good notes. what she lectures on is whats on the test no more than that. very helpful.
her lectures are very good and the tests are according to what she lectures on. she expects you to be on time. very helpful and easy to talk to. you do have to put time and effort into studying. very interesting class. the professor and assistants will go out of their way for you.
She is wonderful professor. It is a hard class so do not slack. but if you put in the time to study, there is no reason to fail. Best thing to do is study the lectures notes asap because they are not easy to memorize. Requires a lot of time to remember the terms so study early and you can get an A!
shes not the most likable teacher but you'll get by. she can be mean at times. she kicks students out of lecture for being late. so be on time. i'd prefer another microbio teacher but i know crafton is limited on selection. i dont know guys shes really a so-so to me.
Decent teacher but very time-consuming class. Fairly easy to get a C, but lots of effort needed if you want a grade of B or above!!! Midterms are INSANELY HARD!!!
Professor Shimeld is an awesome teacher, one that I'll always remember. She is very clear on her lectures. Everything we go over in class is on the exam. She gives you a list for each exam of the possibe essay questions. Micro is a hard and she wont give easy "A".She gives alot of extra credit quizzes. Shes a Great teacher!!
She lectures w/out pp. She goes extremely fast (need recorder). If you don't take notes as she speaks "verbatim" she will deduct points from test! She's very rigid & inflexible! There is no reasoning w/her. Her tests are extremely hard!!I'm an "A" student, & I have not managed to get an A in any of her tests or quizes! Not a + learning environment
Hard yet the best professor I have ever had. Yes, her exams may be hard but everything on it is in her lecture. Lectures are entertaining. She will take the time to talk to you if you have any questions. Take her. At the end of the semester she told me I could skip the final exam and still get an A. All I did was study a little bit everyday.
This was by far the most time consuming course that I've ever taken, but it was really worth it. Shimeld is a wonderful professor and so knowledgeable. The exams are difficult, but you walk out of that class knowing the material. Prior to taking her course I didn't really care about Micro, and now I love it. She's an amazing professor.
If you want to pass, record EVERYTHING and TAKE PICS OF EVERYTHING. Even if you have an A in Lab, which is the most time consuming, you will still not have an A for the course if you don't get A's in her lecture exams! She dictates her lectures, so you must learn all her lectures verbatim or you will fail her tests! If u work, don't take her!
Shimeld is one of my favorite teachers. The class is hard, but doable. Record her lectures and best way to study is to make fill in the blank questions of your own. Study a little bit everyday and study with a partner. You will learn lots. Study only her lecture notes cause that is where everything you need to know is. She is there to help as well.
I love Lisa, she truly cares about her students and if you have questions she will always make time to help you out. Lecture is mandatory, her notes are test material! study a little each day, not the subject to cram. if you have burns for lab you may want to ask renee any questions you have or the helpful lab techs :)
Lisa is one of the best instructors at Crafton. Everything is VERY straight forward. Everything she teaches is applied throughout the course. It's really not that hard of a class like everyone says. Just study your lecture notes and attend all labs you will get an A. And really, this is the only class I've ever taken that applies to everyday life.
Best teacher ive ever had. Difficult with high standards, but doable. Learned a lot and would take her again in a heart beat.
Professor Shimeld is the best microbiology teacher ever. She is very clear, and really wants her students to succeed. She will push you to be the best you can be. If you put in the work and go to her office hours and do what she tells you to do, you will be fine. She is great!
Excellent quality professor. Hard work is required.Fair grading. This is not an easy class!I highly recommend this professor, only,if you are serious about micro. Both, the lecture and the lab are conducted in a highly professional manner. I have enjoyed this class very much, although my grade was low. I have received the grade that I deserved. T.Y.!
This class is very time consuming but it pays off if you give the time and effort. She really cares about her students and she loves the subject which makes the class more interesting. I learned a lot in this class
She is a great teacher! You will not get through this class without working your ass off!! If your not willing to do the work you will not pass. she is very clear about what she wants. All the exams that are given are exactly what is on the notes. So make sure you take great notes and study them!!! Good luck !!!
An extremely tough class, but a lot of interesting information. Must be motivated. Professor Shimeld is tough on her students, but for good measure! She will help you in any way she can, go and talk to her if you are having issues, I am very glad I did! Stay on top of your work, an A or B in the class is a lot more possible than you may think.
One of the best at crafton! Don't take this class of you expect to have your hand held. She has high expectations which I think is great. She is very knowledgeable and helpful. If you have questions, ask! Her and the lab tech, Renee, are extremely helpful. If you want to really learn the material and you are a serious student, take this class.
I really enjoyed taking this class. The material is really clear and what your going to be tested on is very clear. youll never feel left in the dark. The material is alot of memorization, but if you take the time to study it will pay off in grades. If you manage your time and study skills youll still have time for a little bit of a social life.
Great professor. Study, then study some more, and when you have free time, study again.
This is the toughest class I have taken!! Shimeld is super awesome but super hard! She expects YOUR best, and you have to give it to this class to make it through. Any time you need help she is there, and ready to help. Highly recommend Professor Shimeld, she is one of my favorite Professors :) have fun and study study study, she means business!!
Great Professor! I really learned how to discipline myself and it feels really good knowing I got the grade that I really deserved. Professor Shimeld really cares about her students, and wants everyone to succeed. This class needs total dedication not for slackers!
Make sure you have a good way to study. Not a hard class to understand but a ton of material to remember. Lab test are fill in the blank so practice your spelling. Lab is fun and the unknowns are very interesting. Class is sometimes boring but it's hard to make bacteria exciting. Good class and would take it again.
In class now & workload is astronomical. She's a good teacher but her course structure is better suited for a University. Less than a month left & 2 reports, a HEAVY lab project (requires coming in on your own time) & 2 exams. Lab exams have study guides, lecture exams are 3-4 packets of notes wno study guide, SO hard. Plus mand. volunteer work.
Tons of exams worth a lot of points, few multiple choice, lots of fill-ins, grades pretty tough on essay questions & some of THE HARDEST truefalse (she really enjoys trick questions). No study guides so you have to have serious study skills & know EVERYTHING insideout backwardsforwards. She's a great teacher but NOT an easy class by any means.
Great informative lectures. I had 530 to 830 pm class and it went by in a flash. Why would you need study guide if she sectioned out about 5 lecture notes for each exam. Gives 6 essay questions to study but will pick two for test. there are your hint. University work load? it is the same class that offer at uni, should it be easier at JC? AllNotes
Professor Shimeld deserves the entitlement as a professor. Very passionate about microbiology and although her class is not the easiest (tons of lecture material to learn), she gives you all the tools you need to succeed and won't leave you in the dark. Labs are fun and as long as you study for lecture exams and do the work, you can pass the class.
Passionate about the subject. Be on time. Try to go the extra mile. Many different things so keep organized and go through your syllabuses often. She's very entertaining--my family liked her video lectures.
Her material is clearly laid out online. Watch her videos, take notes and study! Use her lecture time to ask questions and get answers. The labs are fun and easy and the professor and the lab tech are both there to help you. Donate a bit more time to this class, it requires it, the tests are moderately hard. Grading is fair, you get what you earn.
Expect to do some studying in Professor Shimeld's class. There is a lot of information to learn in this class, but she makes it so much fun. She is a really awesome teacher and she really cares about her students. I would recommend taking her class! She is great!
I'm currently taking Shimeld's class right now and I couldn't have asked for a more inspirational Micro teacher than her. She is so passionate about this subject and makes learning it fun. This is not an easy class by any means, but if you do all the work, pay attention during class, and study your butt off, you may impress yourself(:
Be prepared to get your ass kicked!! Also keep in mind that if you are in this class you are going into the medical field and that is going to be hell to. Professor Shimeld is amazing. My advise; go to class, go to every lab, study like you have never studied before, but also have fun because this class is going to be a ride!!
I will truly miss this class. She provides you with all the tools to succeed and it is up to you to use them. There are no tricks she takes all her questions from the Lecture outlines. There are 7 tests, 5 lecture, 2 Lab. It is possible to get an A! Her lectures are online and I love it I think it makes everything easier! Take her for LAB & Lecture
take shimeld for both lecture and lab, she makes labs enjoyable and fun! I was so intimidated by the class and her expectations the first few weeks, but once you get into the flow of things it's not so bad. Form a study group! She is an amazing person and professor and she will help you if you need clarification on anything.
She was a wonderful teacher and helped me to learn a lot in this class. Her lectures are via YouTube videos and accessibly anytime which requires each student to be self-motivated. The tests are very difficult, but then again, so the subject itself is very challenging. Shimeld was a fair professor and really cares about her students.
Liked the class so much that I took intro and medical. All lectures were online, which is great because you can pause and re-watch, all in your pajamas. She knows her stuff and is a really nice person. Show up! When you finish lab, you get to leave, so pay attention to directions. Learned a lot!!
