Very peppy, lively explanations. Keeps students engaged in class.

I found her lectures extremely clear and easy to follow.
Her test sucked, but her lectures were interesting. She should make the test correllate with the class lectures.
Clear lectures. Keeps it interesting by showing videos to reiterate points.
take this course! easy, lectures are clear with videos, exams are all 60 mc, one easy paper, and the experiments you participate in are fun.
excellent
Good lectures.
She is extremely intelligent and intimidating. You will work very hard but learn a lot. She answers her emails with lightning speed and is always very helpful. We had a LOT of reading and homework in this course, an intense exam, and a 18pg paper. Take this class if you love abnormal psych and can handle some biology. Hard but worth it!
I loved the class but I had a problem with Professor Shin's behavior. She has a habit of repeatedly checking her cell phone during class which I thought was really annoying. We made presentations near the end of the course and I saw her texting during a few of them. She even did it once when I was talking to her during the break in the middle.
She's very nice and always takes time to answer questions. You'll do fine if you go to classes, take notes, and study before the test. The test was all multiple choice.
Clinical Research Methods - Not the most exciting class, but Dr. Shin is intelligent and tries to make the class as interesting as possible. Work was fair, test and paper were fair. This is really only for Clinical Psych majors, so you have to do it. Try to take another class with her, because she is great in those.
Intimidating, not enthusiastic. Class was dry and boring. She answers email questions quickly, but can be rude and impatient in person. don't bother reading the textbook.
Very interesting class. Fair workload but somewhat demanding amount of reading per week. Worth it though.
Shin is an intelligent, detailed lecturer. She takes the time to go in depth into topics, so that her students are more interested in the material (and are therefore more likely to pay attention to / understand it).
Good lectures, she knows her stuff!
lisa bae intro to linguistics is great
Intimidating at first, but a great professor. She is clear and concise in lectures, though you will probably find class boring if you are not interested in psych research. Tests were challenging but fair and the final paper was a big assignment to tackle but she makes sure you stay on track all semester. If you commit to class, you will do well.
Intimidating at first, but an amazing professor who genuinely cares about what you want to do with your life and helping you get there. She's offered to get me into her lab, be my advisor, write recommendation letters, etc. without me even asking. She's brilliant and engaging and really pushes you to understand the material on a deep level.
professor shin always wants her students to do well and actually understand the material. she goes the extra mile to make sure that she is being clear with what she is teaching, and she constantly asks for feedback on how she can improve. she's the best professor i've ever had!
Lisa is literally the best professor at Tufts she's always on your side she's an amazing resource in and outside of class.
boring lecturer
Goes into great detail in her lectures and is very specific. Good at explaining concepts. She really knows what she's talking about and it shows.
She's fine, but her lectures are pretty boring and she essentially just reads the powerpoint slides.
She gave my favorite lectures in PSY 1. She is smart, her lectures are clear and because of her I am going to take more courses in psychology and about the brain. Super fast on email. cares about her students learning. I think I want to be her when I grow up. :)
Great lectures.
She is not as fun as Sommers, but her input into the class is as valuable. She may bore you at times and you can think of her as just a decent lecturer. If you go to her in person and ask questions, she is very very helpful.
Disagree with one part of last comment. Shin is great lecturer too, smart, clear and totally knows her stuff. She covers the touhghest chapters from the book but she is very clear and always answers all questions. Agree that she is very helpful. I will take more PSychology now.
Very knowledgeable and always ready to help with difficult concepts. Would take a class with her again.
Clear presentation style. Knows her stuff. After this class, I want to major in psych/neuroscience.
Shin is great. She knows the material like the back of her hand, and she's super accessible. Lectures can occasionally drag on (specifically bio heavy lectures) but overall a wonderful professor.
favorite
Shin is really cool and her lectures are pretty interesting. Sometimes she can be a bit intense but I think it is helpful. She explains topics very well!
She's so smart, it's amazing. I want to be her when I grow up. That being said, she and Sommers work well together for this class, but it is almost sad it's so easy. Don't take if you've ever taken a psych class before, you'll be bored to tears
Lots of reading and grade based on three exams, but the exams and material aren't too difficult. Lectures are always fun and engaging.
She is so passionate about this content and clearly loves teaching it. Really comes through how hardworking and intelligent she is in lectures. Easy to learn from because she is very matter-of-fact about information when explaining complex things (appreciate how she simplifies scientific processes)!
Professor Shin is an amazing person who is passionate about what she does and what she teaches. Even though there was a lot of reading to do for this class, the material is engaging, interesting, and overall fun to learn about if you are into psychology and want to take an introductory course. Our grades consisted of three exams and one paper.
I cant say enough good things about Sommers and Shin; they know the material - and how to teach the class - absolutely inside and out. The textbook (which they wrote) and the lectures perfectly complemented each other, lectures were unfailingly engaging, and I cannot recommend PSY 1 highly enough, no matter what you study or major in.
She's an icon. She's a legend. She is the moment. I loved this class and Professor Shin was always very engaging and her lectures were very interesting. There is a lot of reading for this class, but aside from that not many other assignments. This is a fairly easy class to do well in and is a lot of fun TBH.
Amazing professor who is clearly an expert in the field. She teaches such complex concepts in a simple way. PSY1 wasn't a class I was planning on taking but was one of the only classes still open. I am so glad I took it, and highly recommend it to everyone- especially freshmen. Class is an easy A as long as you take notes- open notes tests.
Professor Shin is very knowledgeable, but not nearly as engaging a lecturer as her colleague Professor Sommers.
awesome!
Professor Shin is a great lecturer. She's super knowledgeable about the material and accessible after class or through email if you have questions.
Professor Shin is a great lecturer and made content really engaging. She's also super knowledgeable and cares about teaching, and you can tell she's taught this course many times before and loves to do it.
Professor Shin is pretty cool. She doesnt really get as much credit because she teaches next to sommers in psy1 and people love him, but shes an awesome lecturer and obviously very smart.
Prof. Shin is such a good professor and clearly an expert in her field! The only thing I would say is that I didn't like the way she outlined her lectures sometimes, as she had the tendency to jump a little bit, but it was easy to follow if you did the readings before!
She was a very knowledgeable professor. The class was in person, but the exams were online. If you read the textbook and take notes are the highlighted terms, you will do well on the exams.
Her lectures are fast, boring, and filled with clips from either the Office or F.R.I.E.N.D.S. She will make a joke, but it will not be funny. I used to pray for the days for Sommers to teach so that I would have a good learning.
Lol, we're complaining about tv clips? Office videos were great and other good videos demonstrated brain concepts. Teaches trickiest parts of the course (brain, neurons, disorders treatments) but lectures are clear, organized. Shin is obviously smart but she is also patient and kind and always answers questions in class and quickly on email.
Underrated queen. She might not be as funny as Sommers in Psy 1 but she is just as wonderful! Her lectures cover the more difficult chapters IMO and she explains key concepts in a very clear manner.
If you read the textbook and take notes you're probably gonna get an A. I read most of the textbook and went to like half the lectures and got an A-. The grading is mostly based on three online and open-note exams that are mostly multiple-choice. The content is really interesting too and both professors are great.
easy class. the lectures are long and a bit useless if u do the readings. but u dont really have to go to all of them. just actually do the readings and the mini quizzes and you'll do fine
Good lecturer, she covered the hardest chapters in the textbook, but the concepts were explained clearly
smart, good lectures, cares about students
Co-lectures with Prof Sommers. She seems very nice and is a clear lecturer. Class may become slightly boring. The grading is dependent on 4 quizzes and a research paper. You will do fine as long as you go to the classes.
My favorite of the two profs for the class. Very knowledgable and able to explain complicated material. Cares about students learning and understanding. Fast email responses.
Shin is an amazing professor. She and Sommers make a great team for PSY01; if they're not teaching it, wait if you can. Shin's lectures are very clear and she's very knowledgeable about the topics she presents; her coverage of disorders made me want to take psychopathology. Just show up to class and take decent notes and you'll be fine.
very intelligent woman! teaches the concept very thoroughly and easy to understand.
Take Psych w Shin and Sommers! The class is very easy, just 4 online, open-note exams, 1 paper, and a research requirement - very easy to get an A. Shin isn't as effective as Sommers, but she does teach the harder, more bio heavy lectures of the course. Her psychopathology lectures are very interesting. She is very kind and responds to emails fast!
I think Prof. Shin should receive more credit for her awesome lectures. She teaches the hardest parts of the course, so her lectures are fast-paced and packed with A LOT of information; it was even hard for me to take notes at a fast enough speed. For the amount of content she has to cover, she does it really well. She is an outstanding professor.
Lisa Shin is passionate about her work/research and explains difficult concepts clearly and concisely. It would be cool if she incorporated more experience or projects from her lab into lectures.
such a lovely person and very knowledgeable in her field of study. attending lectures and skimming the text will easily get you an A.
Prof. Shin is amazing! Only 2 exams, one presentation, and lots of readings (around 6-7 articles, DSM criteria, and textbook chapters). You have to take notes on the readings because you are expected to participate in the class, but it's nothing to stress about. She's extremely kind and supportive. Take it if you're a Psych major for sure!
Prof. Shin, and this class in general, is absolutely fantastic. If a teacher can make a massive lecture engaging and makes me want to actually come to their class they are a great professor.
Super chill class. Professor Shin can be a little more boring than Sommers but Psych 1 is definitely a class I would recommend. Tests are easy, open notes and book, plus you drop the lowest grade. She always has a random personal anecdote but wants you to learn something new and be engaged.
engaging and realistic- cares about students and wants you to do well
Unsure about grade yet, but most likely A+. Both Prof. Shin and Sommers did a great job teaching, but some lectures can be a bit boring as they are basically the same as the textbook.
Professor Shin is an extremely smart woman. She covers some of the harder topics in Psych 1 and does a phenomenal job of explaining them. Overall, I think she and Sommers make a great team for Psych 1, so definitely take it with them.
Prof. Shin is a good lecturer that explains the more difficult psych topics very well. She gets outshined by Prof. Sommers in joint lectures because she's a bit dry and teaches a bit more slowly, but she takes the denser topics. Psy 1 is super easy, just pay attention in lectures and use the lecture notes handouts.
Class itself was very easy, graded from 3 out of 4 open textbook quizzes and a short paper. Great lecturer, clearly taught the material.
Amazing class with Prof. Shin. She is so put together and able to go through lectures effectively. However, be aware that she does go a bit fast, so I recommend following along lecture outlines on Canvas during class. Reading is also important as some quiz material is not mentioned in lectures. Overall really good class and would take again!
Shin is so perfect, and contrary to some comments on here I slightly prefer her lectures to Sommers in PSY001. If you are considering taking PSY001 I'd say go for it, the lecture is generally interesting, and if you do the reading your set for some kind of A by the end of the semester. They want you to gather interest in the subject.
Prof. Shin was a good lecturer and I particularly enjoyed the content she taught since she and Prof. Sommers co-taught. Reading the textbook helped to reinforce concepts covered in class. Open-note quizzes are rather easy, one short paper, and a few online research questionnaire studies to do. Definitely an intro class but enjoyable.
She is a very good professor and packs a lot of information well into the lecture, so I would recommend her if you're actually interested in learning. People tend to prefer Prof Sommers, but I find Prof Shin's lectures to be more engaging and better taught. Overall, she is what I look for in a professor, and I would highly recommend her.
A good teacher and lecturer. She sometimes talks quickly and her material is a little more difficult but great overall and SO kind and accessible in office hours- would def recommend.
She tended to talk a bit fast so sometimes it was a bit hard to keep up with notes (that could also be that I'm a slow note taker), but overall highly engaging and thoughtful.
Loved taking Prof. Shin's class! She made psychology concepts fun to learn and easy to understand. Her lectures were always very clear, organized and engaging. She's very good at responding to emails and is genuinely so kind and caring towards her students. Definitely recommend taking a class with her!
Definitely cared about her students and was passionate about what she was teaching! Lectures are clear, interesting, and easy to follow.
