I've taken 3 courses with Lisa, and though they're always among some of my hardest and work-filled, they're always fun. Lisa's one of the best professors here, and will do anything to help you with whatever you need. Take a Sigel history class!
By far, Lisa Sigel is the worst professor at DePaul University. At the beggining of the class, she told everyone that if you did all the work and studied hard the best grade you would get is a C. If you want a lot of work this class is for you.
Not only was this the worst class I have taken, but Lisa Sigel is the worst prof. It is a very boring class and she doesn't know how to teach!
SO HARD - SO BORING - SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO BORING - worst class ever, so boring i was dying in that class everytime - i had to just get up and leave a few times cause i couldnt take it - shes nice, but thats it - hard class TONS of work
This class was hard, because she made us read 4 novels during the quarter. Her classes are filled with long and boring discussions, but she is very leniant on the midterm paper and the exams
i loved her lectures, but maybe because the topic was interesting to me.she made the lectures fun.too much reading though for quarter but she never gave out quizes. she doesn't take atendance and she's understanding but pretty hard grader.depends on class

Great professor. Total smartass, very intelligent, altogether entertaining person to sit through a 3 hour class with. Be willing to read quite a bit, and participate in discussion and you'll made a great grade.

never take a class with this woman! I dropped it the first day cause she was talking craazzy! She wants you to do a lot of work and the highest you would get is a C. Never take her!! she is probably the worst teacher not only at DePaul but in the entire city of Chi. No one would take Lisa 3 times.
Lisa is a great teacher, she only says she'll give C's to scare everyone into leaving so she can have a small class! Her discussions are awesome, and her women's history class is a lot of fun, and very interesting. I got an A, so everyone should just chill, she's a great teacher.
This teacher makes me get up in the morning to go to school. She is an inspiration. I have never been so engaged by a class. Only take her class if you enjoy history.
Sigel is the worst prof. to ever teach at DePaul. She is absolutely unqualifed to be teaching, and she is the one that needs to be taught. Unfair grading, bias favortism, and a lack of humanity has Sigel being the worst Prof. to ever teach at DePaul.
Lisa is awesome!!!! The best professor at DePaul. She is fun, engaging and makes you think ... hard. She demands lots of work though.
Her class was really hard but I learned a lot, even things I didn't think I wanted to lean. She was great.
great teacher!!
She's a cool prof. Assigns a lot of reading, most of it interesting. I'll take more classes with her, if possible.
i hate history but she made it interesting. she gives good notes and no test in european women's hist. pretty tough grader but nicer than she seems 1st class. she is fun and doesn't care about atendance too much. the readings were interesting too but i guess depends on the class
Lisa is engaging, passionate, and interesting. The class was fun and effective without ungodly amounts of unnecessary work or reading. She is an inspiration - and I would take her again if I had mroe time at DePaul.
Shes kinda cool (even though she is an ultra lib). Didn't really learn much (i knew most of the stuff she presented), and her voice did kinda get annoying (night class=3 hours straight), but shes pretty cool. I got an A- without even doing much (then again, I am smart).

If you like to read(I mean alot of reading) then this is the class for you. It isn't really hard to pass as long as you do the required reading and papers.
She went around the world in 8 weeks.I loved readings n easy papers.1-2pp on reading. That's it!She's very cool and easy 2 get along with.I participated everyday.Very small class.She gets 2 know u good.Don't b late.After 5 min, she won't let u in.Books r great.I'm not gonna sell them back!Take Her.Class based on lecture.Don't need notes! NO FINAL!
Does not care about attendence or participation. Only gives a final exam, 3 1-2 page papers and a few quizes that are super easy. She is a really hard grader on the papers because she expects something that she doesn't clarify. Lectures are really interesting and it's an easy way to knock this class out at night. I recommend her!
Good teacher. I hate history but she made it interesting and fun for us. She has a good sense of humor and is willing to help you if you ask. She sees through BS so don't try.
Mrs. Sigel is awesome. She can keep you paying attention for a long time. She is very lively and very easy to understand. The only bad part is she assigns an ungodly amount of reading. I definitely recommed her.
Believes that she is the final word on EVERYTHING and there have been several times where students call her out on things that were incorrect.. There is an unmanagable ammount of reading. Prof is a little nutty, and I think annoying. I was very interested in the class before hand, but I hate my life everytime I'm there. Take only if youre HST major
Great professor. Very excited about what she teaches and is very clear and helpful. Only downfall is A LOT of reading. quizzes extremely easy. If you don't mind a lot of HW take her she'll teach you a lot.
Very excited about the subject although needs to switch to decaf. I enjoyed her class very much. caution, there is a lot of reading and she will quiz you on the readings BEFORE it is discussed in class.
Do not take this woman. She deserves to be teaching high school. Has all her own ideas and biases and if you dont agree she will hate you. Tried to kick me out of class for listening to an Ipod and also stole my newspaper off my desk and threw it away. Made a good topic awful and boring.
what a ****, one of the worst teahers at depaul. She is runs class like a highschool teacher who cant concentrate if you aren't paying attention to her opinionated lectures. You must think like her to get a good grade and you had better attend every class. trust me, stay away from sigel.
Assigns ridiculous amount of reading. 5 textbooks for the course, including 4 novels. You are expected to read anywhere from 30 pages of the main text up to a large portion of a novel in between one class and the next.

A little crazy. No Midterm, cumilative final (she gives you the questions, and you need to be ready for any of them) has a 4 page pape, but does not offer positive feedback. Quizzes are easy if you read the book(s). Not a great teacher overall
Lisa Sigel is a fun and energetic teacher. The class was fairly easy and not too demanding. It's a fun class to take and she's a fun professor to have.
This class was not that bad, there was a lot of work though. Many books, a really good amount of reading for each day you have class, and either one or two papers that week on the reading you did. It wasn't too complicated, but it is a lot of work. She made the material very clear, and there are no tests with her. It was a very interesting class.
Okay, so what's the deal with the comments people are making about her assigning 30 pages to a large portion of a novel? It's college. We read in college. Overall, Professor Sigel is one of the tougher (but not the toughest) instructors at DePaul. If you come to class and do the reading you are guaranteed to get an A.
Sigel was wonderful. Very interesting material and she gives a damn about her students. She pushes you hard but ultimately you will learn a lot. Not for slackers.
There was a bit of reading, but I liked the class a lot. There were no tests, just a 2-3 page essay once a week. Our final was a reflective paper on the class.
This woman is awesome. She's so passionate you can't help but getting into it. Don't expect to blow her class off though, she said when "you think so hard your brain starts to hurt, that's when we're starting to get somewhere". Great teacher!
Ridiculous woman, keeps going on and on about the same things until they are burned into your skull. A lot of reading that she never completely eludes her point to.
This class really makes me think. Professor Sigel is awesome!!
Sigel should not be training the historians of tomorrow, as she is NOT fundamentally sound. Popular historians are more methodologically sound than she is. She has obvious biases as well, neo-Marxist and feminist to name two. Don't bother to express opinions outside of those ideals, or you will be in trouble. Should be denied tenure by DePaul.
Great professor. No tests midterm or final and almost no use of the book. Also she does not care at all about attendance. She is also extremly talented professor who cares about her students
horrible teacher. not that knowledgeable, and set in HER ideas- very feminist!! if you dont agree with her point of view dont bother taking the class. coming in for help doesnt help.
I really enjoy her but do not take it as a morning class
Ignore all the bad comments. This is one of the best professors at DePaul. She uses enthralling material, and initiates very stimulating discussion. She challenges your thinking, very much so, and doesnt tolerate disrespect. So egotistical ninnies beware! GREAT PROFESSOR!
She was great! Interesting class. I would definitely take it again.
Oh, and she is knowledgeable, and although she discussed women in a class about women, that doesn't make her a feminist, but who gives a crap anyway you women hater.
Lisa is by far one of the most interesting teachers at DePaul. I would not say she's a bad teacher-- if you're not prepared to read, maybe you shouldn't be in college. She's pretty chill and down to earth, and loves to facilitate arguments, which is very helpful. I hated history until Lisa opened my eyes to a different approach. Very cool.
the whole class was about how she hates disney. But then she lets her children watch the dvds? Her essay prompts were one sentence and very vague. the questions asked in class also were hard to understand what she was looking for. If you think like her then you will do fine. ok grader on papers Gives excellent feedback on what to improve. average
Professor Sigel is among the best educators I've had at DePaul. She has clear expectations of her students and is genuinely interested in the direction her students take with their research projects. I struggled very much in this course but know I would not have passed without Prof. Sigel's continual support and excellent guidance.
Class consisted of a lot of reading and was more of a seminar then a lecture She would throw out a topic and the class would have to discuss Participation wasn't mandatory but encouraged Grade consisted of 3 papers worth 45% a final paper 40% and then 15% short writing on the reading If you can write well and enjoy reading a lot you will do fine
Lisa was an amazing professor! You definitely have to devote a fair amount of time to the readings to do well on the papers and in the class. She is so engaging though that its completely worth it. I had no interest in history or women's history prior to the class but I LOVED it and would highly recommend taking her.
AMAZING WOMAN!! This was a class I actually WANTED to go to, discussions were held everyday but were guided by her and turned to talking about whatever the class wanted to talk about. Which made it interesting. These helped write the papers (she hints what you should/could write about). Answered every email fast. Gives good feedback on papers.
Professor Sigel is the BEST professor I have had. She cares about her students so much and will help you no matter what. You have to participate in class because the classes are small, but you will want to. She makes class laid-back, enjoyable, and inspiring. I fell in love with my history minor all over again because of her.
Best prof ever! She is very smart and a very good teacher. If you work hard you can get an A. I would definitely take another class of her's.
Wonderful professor, one of the best I've ever had tbh. Her classes are challenging, but she is very helpful.
Dr. Sigel was very welcoming and friendly. I highly recommend her women' s history course.
No tests but lots of papers, and if you want a good grade you have to really reallywork for it, she grades papers super super hard. I would put a lot of work into her papers and think I wrote a good paper, and was happy with it and would end up with an 80%. Also lots of reading. Good luck if you do take her, you'll need it.
If you actually read the assigned material, this class isn't too difficult. If you don't read... well, good luck! Dr. Sigel was a very fair grader and super cool.
No tests but a lot of papers... you HAVE to read assigned material. If you don't, good luck! DO NOT TAKE AS A LEARNING DOMAIN CLASS. Most students are so into it because history is their major or minor but it's not worth all the trouble if you aren't, there are way easier classes out there for learning domains.
Really fun class! The discussions are very interesting and the prof is so cool. She requires student to do the reading for class but why wouldn't you? You should not be in college if you are not interested in learning.
I have taken her for a learning domain class. I worked my heart out and ending now with a B. Extremely harsh grader. If you dont take good notes you will not know to incorporate her ideas in your papers and thats where things go south. If you can, take someone else. She is way too much. Sorry...
A well-rounded historian that wants her students to work hard and understand the meaning of being a historian. She helped improve my knowledge not only in the sphere of sexuality, but also my writing and critical thinking skills. If you use her help and feedback and invest time in understanding the material, you can definitely have an A!
Like others have mentioned, Lisa is going to make you work for it. Be prepared to spend at least 2-3 hours for the readings before each class. 3 papers and an exam, they're all not necessarily hard (provided you did the readings), it's just really hard to get an A. The quality she expects is a little bit beyond a 200 class. Still a great prof
Professor Sigel's class lectures were always informative and entertaining. You can tell she is very passionate about what she is teaching. Participation is important in the class as 20% of your grade depends on it. Only thing I didn't like about the class was that I felt that too much HW and assignments were given, we were expected to read around 30-60 pages of text a week and write 3 papers throughout quarter. Final was fairly easy mostly being MCQs and short answers. If you like history take her class, If you're only doing it for a UTP requirement, take another class.
Amazing!
Dr. Sigel is probably the best professor in DePaul's history department. She legitimately cares about her students as people, which is pretty rare for a professor in a big school like DePaul. Her classes can be kind of challenging, but always very interesting and cool.
SIGEL IS SUCH A GOOD PROF!!!!! I! LOVED! HER! CLASS! SHE IS A RLY COOL WOMAN!!!!!!!
Dr. Sigel is the finest professor I have ever encountered. Excellent classroom manner and management, willing and able to meet during office hours to go over material, advise about general matters. A teacher, mentor, and scholar, Depaul is lucky to have Dr. Sigel.
Classes are engaging, the material always interesting, and Dr. Sigel is skilled at engaging the entire class, so ideas are explored in depth by all of us, rather than the instructor lecturing at us. I had opportunity to meet with Dr. Sigel to get some pointers about a paper, and her tips helped me to improve my work in other classes!
Not only a gifted instructor, Dr. S is also a brilliant scholar. We are lucky to have her!
Great class, great teacher!
Pay attention, do the work, and this instructor will make you a better student. also: great classes, hilarious and caring proff!
Sigel is so funny and super cool, but remember to the reading, otherwise you'll be totally lost during discussions.
Dr. Lisa Sigel is funny, helpful, informative; she's all around an amazing professor. I'd recommend her class highly.
Sigel is a highly respected professor, and rightfully so! I've taken two of Sigel's classes so far, both were amazing. I hope to take another class of hers in the future, if possible.
Dr. Sigel's Crime and Punishment class was a really wonderful experience for me. Sigel is talented at facilitating discussion and her class really made me have to think. She also replies to emails quickly, which is really helpful.
Lisa Sigel is helpful, but not hand-holdy; you have to work for that A. I think her class helped my writing and analytical skills, take Sigel's class if you want to become a better student.
Coolest prof ever
I love Sigel so much. She is without question one of the best professors ive ever had. She def makes you work for it and there's a lot of reading but everything she assigns is really interesting. Sigel is passionate and wants her students to learn as much as possible. Must take notes but lectures are always interesting!!! Would 100% take her again.
I love Lisa!! Her lectures and readings were always interesting and I left every class learning something new. She is super helpful and understanding. Definitely cares about her students and wants them to succeed. Make sure to do the readings as classes are based on participation from students. As long as you put effort into her class, you'll pass.
Super friendly and helpful, Lisa is a wonderful person and teacher
Dr. Sigel's class is a mix of lectures and discussions. The lectures are really awesome but it is the discussions that make you think hard about the class topics. I will definitely take her classes again.
I am now half way through my MBA (Wharton, U. Penn) and the research, analysis and writing skills I learned in Dr. Sigel's classes serve me every day. If you want to succeed academically and professionally, while enjoying the best courses of your life, take every Sigel class possible.
Lisa Sigel is a smart and wonderful professor
Dr. Sigel is a fun professor and I miss her class dearly
Stay away from this class!! Definitely the worst! nothing but 30 pages of reading followed by boring discussions that no one cares about and long papers. I felt stressed the entire time and somehow even after Im done I still am stressed. Please save yourself.
Lisa Sigel's classes never ceases to amaze me. Her lectures were above and beyond. She's kind, smart, hilarious, and super helpful. If you can't read 60 pages a week then you shouldn't be taking college level history! Overall a wonderful experience, she's clearly an expert on the subject.
Class discussions in Sigel's H239 taught me how to be a better listener, better thinker, and better speaker. Any Prof. Sigel class is a must-take!!
so bad don't take. especially if you are a history major looking to take your capstone don't!!!!!! she gave me a B but most of the kids weren't allowed into the capstone. she is awful
Work hard, learn lots. It's pretty straight forward.
She is really nice and knowledgeable. She explains well and I really enjoyed the class despite it being online.
Absolutely love this professor. Lisa's super nice and approachable. Classes are discussion heavy and participation does matter. If you don't do the readings, might be a little lost. Essays are easy as long as you take notes during discussion and use them on your essays. Can't give you a bad grade if you use her own words :)
The LSP class is mostly a mixed bag of students who take the course that best fits their schedule, but Lisa made the class extremely insightful while also creating an environment that best let us learn the material and learn/build off of each other. The readings were rarely boring, and the workload was not hard to keep up with.
Lisa is an insanely good professor. She knows what she is talking about and is super helpful. She never makes you feel like you are dumb(trust me, I say many dumb things), and she keeps the tone of class pretty light even when talking about dense and difficult topics. I took her for HST298 and am taking her again for HST299.
Dr. Sigel is an outstanding professor. Heavy on in-class discussions that relate directly to the papers. Reading and writing is average for an upper-division class. Pay attention to her feedback, it will help you improve. If you do the readings, expect excellent, fun, and funny discussions that you will get a lot from.
She is an amazing teacher, and her class is wonderful to be in. There is reading as it is a history class and typically class lectures are mainly discussion lead by the students about the various readings you've done. She is very open and easy to talk to if you need help. Would recommend her for anyone who is a history major.
Dr. Sigel is cool, knowledgable, and a good teacher. She gives you readings that are not unreasonable, she pushes in class lecture and gives constructive feedback. Not the most disability accessible friendly, but has wiggle room with accomodations and pushing deadlines.
Sigel is a god among mortals. Her understanding of historical writing methods is deep and wide. She is an excellent lecturer and supportive accessible teacher.
Entirely discussion based.Cold calls on students.Terrified me. my first 300 level course as a history major. Not all 300 levels courses are this tough, take another professor.Avoid her at all costs. She starts every class by asking if each person read;so ridiculous as we are all adults here and don't need to be punished in front of class if we didn't
Dr. Sigel is such a wonderful and lovely individual. She is a pusher and pushes you to do the best work possible. She genuinely wants to see you succeed and gives so much helpful feedback and resources for your research paper through the quarter. She always has amazing advice and gold nuggets every time we met for class. Focus on writing revisions!
Dr. Sigel is a kind person however a very tough grader. She is a perfectionist and will find every flaw in your work and take it out on your grade with no clear grading criteria. Sucks the fun out of the major
This was one of the most stress-inducing courses I have taken so far. Professor Sigel is clearly very knowledgeable when it comes to this topic but this course has a TON of reading which she makes you print out everything, no laptops, all Socratic seminar discussion style. She starts every class with attendance asking if you read
Sigel's Crime and Punishment class was a tour-de-force. While I took this class for my major, I'd recommend it to anyone interested in the societal disciplinary structures. The readings weren't trivial, but more worthwhile than the textbook chapters you might drudge through in another course. Also, Sigel is so, so nice and generally understanding.
Sigel is a demanding but insightful professor. Her lectures are engaging, and she provides valuable feedback. While grading can be tough, using tools like Unstuckstudy helped me stay on top of the workload.
Professor Sigel is incredible! But be prepared to put in the work. She is a tough grader but ultimately wants you to succeed in her courses. The assigned readings and attendence are a must. I would suggest going to her office hours if anything is unclear. She is extremely approachable outside of class and is always willing to help!
Only take a capstone with Lisa if you are prepared to work. If that's you, then you will enjoy every moment of the course. She pushes you to create the best version of your paper through her feedback and a lot of feedback from classmates. The capstone is structured so you don't break into tears in week 10. Worth every minute.
