very interesting class. highly recommend. Very easy. She is very resonable. Really funny, lectures can be interesting. Reading assignments are managable.
Such a good class and teacher, she is awesome and makes class fun!
Great dresser, fun person but very blunt. She knows her stuff and was willing to help me in office hours a lot, but it wasn't required. Keep up with the reading and speak up in class - she likes it.
She a really cool lady. Her lectures can be really interesting. Reasonable grader on essays - sometimes reading is a lot but the books are surprisingly good. Awesome teacher.
She made the class fun and it wasn't really hard at all
fun class, she is a little quirky but a great teacher. She assigns good material, and you almost always get a b+ on the papers. Definitly take this teacher!
She's an awesome proff. You certainly learn a great deal in the class. The reading is reasonable and so it the grading on the essays as well. She has a very vibrant personality and makes class fun. Very funny too!
Great English class. Strongly recommended. She's young, blunt, and very funny. Enjoyed the readings and decussions. Learned how to improve my critical reading skills. Papers and dicussion will surely improve your writing.
Ms. Smith is a refreshing and witty teacher.. You will learn a lot from her...STRONGLY recommended
She is a very witty, interesting prof. Great course, and discussions are pretty good. Pretty hot too!
I was an Englsih major at USD, and I think Prof. Smith had the best book choices, most interesting and intellectual discussions and taught me-by far-the most any prof. in the dept. did about reading. Plus she is funny and charming. It's sad she doesn't teach more courses for majors.
She's great. Definetly take this class with her for your GE Literature requirement. We read plays, disscussed them, and sometimes watched the movies. Workload: just reading and some short essays.
I love this Professor so much I signed up to take her next semester. She is funny, encourages discussion, and picks wonderful material. She grades papers on your thought process rather than structure/citations- gave me solid A's on every paper. The class is interesting and not strenuous. Take her!
Smith is so awesome. No hw, about 5-7 papers that only have to be 1 page long, don't have to go 2 class, u watch lots of movies, no final. Easy grader, guranteed B. I personally never read anything that we were supposed to (just cliff notes) & still got a B+. Very nice & funny teacher. Take her!
Easy professor. Will learn a lot from her. Go to office hours too, that way she'll like you even more.

Hottie! She's got that body karate too! Great class. You sit and talk about the books you read and then write an essay. She grades pretty reasonable. No quizzes or tests or homeowork. Just reading and essays on each book. Attendance isn't that big of a deal. She tells you it is, but she really doesn't care.
She is way hot and a good professor. Class isn't ahrd just sit there and talk about the reading. A couple papers for the class and she is a very easy grader. Fun teacher
Prof Smith was amazing. I've taken a bunch of Lit classes at USD and so far she has been the best. She picks interesting stuff to read, the class environment is chill, and she is both a great teacher but also very understanding.
SO NICE AND SO FUNNY! she's amazing! and the class is so interesting and fun!
Professor Smith is a wonderful teacher. She is really excited about literature, and her excitment rubs off on her students. I loved her class!
Lisa Smith is an Awesome teacher, but works best if the class is engaged in the readings. All we do are papers, but the reading is easy because the books are interesting.
SOOOOOOO HOTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT. SHe has a very dominating nature and attitude which just makes her even hotter.
Growing up Fiction. pretty easy class cuz all you do is sit there while everyone talks about the book. we read like four or five books throughout the semester and then she grades you on a paper you write for each one. participation is about a third of your grade. so i guess talk, if you want and act interested. i cant say that i actually learn
Such an awesome woman. I'm not gonna lie guys, she is hot too. Great teacher, the class was really just a giant book club. Read the book and then come into class and talk about. Don't wanna read? Come into class and listen to other people talk so you can bs your way through the paper. Great class... Take it
This class is one of the most enjoyable I have taken so far at USD. You read then sit around and discuss. LSmith has the best sense of humor and you end up making friends with everyone you sit around. It is a MUST that you talk in class though because she's all about participation. Only about five papers a semester, TAKE HER
She sits at the front of the classroom with her legs crossed and we discuss poetry. She is kind of scary and discourages participation by belittling students for attempting to participate in a class that they are only in for GE credit. Go figure.
really great teacher, we read a lot of really great books and did papers on each of them (half take home half in class). all class we just discuss what we read and all you really do is sit and listen, though she loves people who participate, so try to comment. shes a fair grader, take her you wont be disappointed!
she really isn't the nicest woman. she tells you right off the bat that you are on your own for this class, which is all well and good, but when you go to her to ask how you can improve or get some clarity she doesn't help much. she kind of assigns you a grade and sticks to it throughout the semester.
There are a lot of books for the semester and consequently too much reading to get through for each class. There are short writings while you read and essays once you finish a book, either in class or out of class. It's up to you to do the reading and talk in class.
AMAZING!!!! Professor Smith has a very pleasant personality, provides unique insight to the texts, and is incredibly helpful. Her class is really all about participation and it's so funny how she is sarcastic all the time. More importantly, she picks fantastic books!
I took Growing Up Fiction, and Lisa Smith is a great teacher. All you do is discuss the books, so make sure you have something to say and you're golden. She's super chill, a short paper about whatever you want after each books. Great books by the way.
I don't have anything that extreme to say about her, she isn't my best teacher but is by far not the worst. Had her for eng. comp. and you really only get what you put into it. Talk during discussions and show up for class on a "regular" basis and you should be fine. If you ever want to waste time just talk about LOST.
Amazing teacher. Take her
Great class. Good books and interesting discussions. Make sure you read and have good thoughts on your essays and you should be fine. Much better than many other English teachers.
She is one of the best. As long as you participate in class and read, that's all she asks for. She treats her students like adults and doesn't just assign busy work. She is very relaxed, but knows what she's talking about. Highly recommend this class.
Read, participate, do the work and it's a guaranteed B at least. I didn't really participate and I got a B. She's really attractive too so class isn't that bad. ;)
[Took her class at Southwestern College.] She is THE BEST.
Cool lady and not too hard of a class. You just have to read the stories and listen to discussion in class, and you are good to go! You only have to write a handful of papers, so I think it is worth it to take her for an English GE.
Professor Smith is honestly one of the great ones to take. Class is easy, just make sure to read and write your essays. Easy to get an A or at least a B+.
Lisa is the best professor I have had at USD by far!!!! I wish I wasn't a senior so I could take more of her classes. The nicest and most helpful professor. And HILARIOUS. She treats you like adults and is very flexible with what you need. She wants her students to succeed. I took this as my upper division W GE and it was the best. TAKE HER!!!!!!
Lisa is seriously the best. She is so chill, she doesn't really care if you go to class. You will get a better grade if you do, but she is still pretty lenient.
You really get to understand the books through her class. She is super cool and I loved going to class. The class setting is very book club like. Over all we had 2 essays on whatever you wanted and one midterm and a final
This is a really good class to get your upper division English core out of the way. Not only are the books interesting, but attendance was usually not mandatory. You could miss one class a week and as long as you keep up with the reading and participate when you're there, it won't matter. Overall, we only had 2 essays and a midterm and final.
I absolutely loved this class in Growing up Fiction. She was an awesome teacher with lit discussions every day. As long as you read, write all of 2 essays, and show up to class, you will most likely get an A
LOVED this class. Professor Smith is so funny and chooses books that you'll actually enjoy reading. Show up to most of the classes and think outside the box on your essays and you'll get a good grade. Make sure you talk during class because the discussions get very interesting, and it helps your participation grade!
Growing Up Fiction was so fun! Just show up for class, and participate and pay attention during discussions and you'll be able to write the essays easily. Smith is really funny and always has something interesting to say about the novel. Easy grader on essays; you'll almost always get an A if you try hard enough.
Ms. Smith is a very motivating professor. She is super helpful and clear when speaking about assignments. I recommend her to anyone who wishes to take an English course. I would definitely take her again!
GREAT TEACHER!!!!
Speak in class and she will love you, very easy class, reading a few short stories each night, takes less than an hour and the books are interesting
Professor Smith is awesome! She is very quirky and witty and prone to funny tangents. The books are weird but interesting. Class is discussion based. There are only 4 essays, 2 in class and 2 out of class. Write about something weird and back it up and it's an easy A
Lisa Smith is a very sarcastic but easy-to-talk to professor that is group discussion-based. Our class sits in a circle for easy eye contact. Basically, you read a short story (15-40pgs) then show up to class to share ideastheories of story. We had one test - the final, & wrote 2 papers (based off of ideas). She reminds me of Kristen Wiig :)
TAKE HER, you won't be disappointed.
Smith is a decent teacher. In class she's pretty cynical and sarcastic but it's very funny. You don't necessarily need to be at every class, but it definitely helps if you are. I didn't do a lot of the reading and I survived pretty easily. She lets you bring books into the midterm and final so only a little preparation beforehand is necessary.
Easy A as long as you show up for class and participate in class discussions. She provides copies for most of the readings which are pretty interesting crime based readings rather than the usual categories. The class itself is laid back & kept my attention the entire time. She is not too strict with grading. I highly recommend taking her class
Lisa Smith is one of the most awesome English professors here at USD. You'll read about 5 books per semester and only about 3 essays, and she is always available for help in office hours. Her classes are all in the style of sitting around in a circle and talking about the book. No tests/quizzes. Also she's Insta famous. Take her!!
5 assigned books, 2 papers, 1 short reading response, a midterm, and a final. So the workload is very easy, and if you read the books, you'll do fine. However, she is TERRIBLE at returning assignments. You literally have to beg to get your work back, and she'll keep telling you how busy she has been. By finals, midterms still weren't returned..
Very easy class but a waste of time. She did not teach anything. We spent almost all of class talking about celebrity gossip. She never gave us real essay prompts, so it was hard to tell what she was looking for. All of the novels I was able to find online and I didn't read my $150 textbook once. Her humor is very rude and sarcastic, offensive even
As a non-english major, this was the best lower-div. english class I could have taken. She is one of the funniest professors and talks to us like we're all on the same level. Every class is a simple discussion of the book read. She mostly just rambles for the duration of the class while we listen. Only a few take home and in-class essays- no exams.
Super chill. Always looking to make the students laugh, plus, she's a gem of a person. Really clear as to what she wants from a student and their papers. I would definitely recommend her again.
She is very nice and is passionate about what she teaches and a lot of class time was a fun conversation among the class. This class was to improve writing skills and I don't think mine really did, I didn't get much help in that area from her.
Prof. Smith was one of my favorite teachers I've ever had. The books she picked were not only extremely interesting, but they pushed me to think in ways school had never prompted me to before. The class was mostly discussion based and I thoroughly enjoyed listening to her and my classmates' thoughts as well as sharing my own. Highly recommend!!!
Had her for first year writing. funny lady who's straightforward and witty She only has a few papers and you read a good amount. She's def helpful in office hours. She doesn't really care about attendance but you'll only be hurting yourself because she likes participation. Shouldn't be a difficult class unless you really don't try
Easy class, I'm thankful to Smith for allowing us to read interesting books rather than just academic essays. The class discussions can be engaging, depending on your classmates. Smith gives good feedback and allows you to develop a personal style. She often seems uninterested, which bothers me. The class wasn't remarkable, but it wasn't bad.
If you do not participate, you will NOT do well in this class. The class is solely discussion based on the books you read in class. As long as you read the books and contribute once or twice a class you will be fine. Prof. Smith is someone who actually cares about you as a person. Take this class
This was by far one of my favorite Liberal Studies classes so far because Professor Smith makes it really fun! Most of the class time is spent in discussion so it is important to keep up on the reading. She is very fair about assignments and reading and wants her students to succeed. Take this class!
Lisa is one of my favorite professors EVER. Her lit class is so interesting, the books we read were really good and our class discussions were engaging. I actually wanted to go to her class because I love listening to her (and she is SO funny). The workload is really manageable if you don't mind reading.
Love this woman. She is so real and genuine and never assigns busy work and the homework has never felt like you're wasting time. She totally "gets it" and is hilarious. Sometimes she is detached or irritated which isn't always great, but if you actually read and make an effort to participate it's worth it. We didn't get papers back for a while.
She can be very intimidating at first but warms up later on. She's a great woman with quite funny actually. If you don't do the readings it's hard to keep up. I got by with skipping some readings but not all, its not possible to do well with skipping them. She does assign a lot of reading in short amounts of time, very overwhelming at times.
An amazing teacher with interesting views and great lectures. The class isn't too hard and the reading is really interesting, the best part is the discussions given in class. She really loves the book and teaching and she makes the class that much better
Professor Smith is awesome! She can be very intimidating at first, but she really cares about you and wants you to learn. She assigns super interesting books that will really make you think. The reading can get a little overwhelming as there is a lot of it. Make sure you participate in class or you won't do well. She is also hilarious!
Loved her class! The books we read were interesting, and we spent the majority of class discussing them (participation is important). Most assignments were reader responses/essays. She was a little standoffish at first, but is very kind, engaging, and funny in class (even over zoom). If you read and contribute to discussions, youll be fine!
Fun teacher with interesting takes and lectures, participation and reading really matter to get good grade, help on essays and to get on her good side. Chill with due dates and tends to go on tangents but really allows you to explore texts and techniques in your writing. Not a lot of work but interesting to think and talk about, good teacher.
It took me a little while to get used to her, but now I love Professor Smith! She assigns interesting readings, and her classes are participation heavy. If you do the reading, put effort into your essays, and contribute to discussion, youll be fine. You learn to critically read in her class and therefore enjoy the reading more.
She is such a great professor and grades very well ! she loves creativity. She is so funny seems like a boss woman.
I love Lisa!! This was my second semester taking her. Both of the classes I had with her were actually in-person, which was super nice. Lisa is so understanding and kind. Just have everything in by the last day of finals and you won't get marked down for late work. Highly suggest taking her!!
she's aight.
Joke of a class. Didnt need to go. Just read the books and complete the papers. Super easy.
Classes with her are always interesting and fun. She has a free-flowing, casual attitude to the class and its assignments. She also provides a great chance for you to explore new ways of writing and formulating your ideas and essays which is invaluable in the college experience. Participate often and she won't leave you to fail.
Professor Smith is a very good professor. She is clear about expectations and willing to help if needed. You must read the books in order to do well. Repeated cycle of reading a book and writing an essay on it. Mix of in class and out of class essays.
I'm not used to her style so that's why I wouldn't take again, but she seems passionate about the books we go over. Didn't do anything to work on our writing skills. just reading and doing an essay on what we read. Her laid back attitude can be too much sometimes and is off putting to the students and makes showing up seem pointless, but do you.
She is very laid back and all you have to do for class is read what is due and be able to talk about it. You have 2 in class essays and two take home. She is hilarious during lecture and gives good feedback on assignments.
Easy class, only a few essays and small amounts of reading each class. She roasts her students though.
She is a very much you'll either love her or hate her. I'm personally a fan of sarcastic professors, but some people don't like that. You can tell she knows what she's doing and is willing to help, you just need to participate to be on her good side.
Prof Smith if you're reading this I will miss you and your class so much, love you
Don't take this class! The teacher just talks about nonsense the entire time. DOES NOT TEACH YOU HOW TO WRITE. This is so ironic considering the class is literally called first year writing. Feedback on papers was unclear and it took her FOREVER to grade papers. Books were not very interesting and the lectures would put the whole class to sleep.
I never enjoyed waking up early to go to a class, but her's was different. I genuinely enjoyed her classes. We read 3 books and did 4 essays (2 of them in class) and discussed the books in class.
Professor Smith is a gem. She cares so much about her students and is super sarcastic and funny in class. So many people from FYW are taking her again this semester because they love her so much even though her next classes aren't required. I am taking her again and I love her teaching so much.
If you are a good writer already, you'll do really well in her class. If not, I would take another prof since she doesn't really give good feedback. She grades really slowly. As long as you read and participate you'll do okay though. It's a fine LLC class to take since she doesn't gaf about the second sem integration project
Some people love her, some people hate her. I personally did not enjoy her teaching style, but honestly, she was super funny at times. There is a lot of reading, and the writing assignments are very abstract. She scared me a lot though, so I never felt comfortable asking questions in her class.
Super chill professor. Books that we read are very interesting and stay on top of reading and participate in class and it wont be hard to get an A.
LOVE LISA. very fun and interesting class because she is such a great teacher. Reading assignments were manageable. Very few graded papers throughout the year (comb of in class and out of class). just participate because she is really easy to form a relationship with if you do. great class and teacher overall.
I LOVE her. Had her for WorldLit, too. Class is always a discussion, little lecture. She's hilarious and a bit out of pocket. She acts like a real person and is very matter-of-fact. No rubric, but makes her ideas clear. You do need to read before every class. You do need to attend. She works with you on everything though. Amazing person and teacher
Prof. Smith may come off as intimidating at first, but is an overall good person. Despite her stern attitude, she is very funny. The class is a 55 min discussion based on the reading for homework. As long as you participate almost every class, you should be fine. 4 essays for 4 books within the semester so not too bad.
