Her first time teaching and she was a great prof! Notes were very clear and explained the material well. Tests were very fair.
don't take her class! her tests were very difficult and had lots of tiny minuscule items that weren't overly important. Instead of testing concepts, she tested how well you remembered the millions of experiments and tests made in psychology history. she is very enthusiastic, however there are better profs in the department.
She was a excellent prof sometimes her vocabulary was a little beyond the class but she explained her wording very clearly. She took the time to help her students after class. She also had a sense of humour which made the class fun. I would recommend her as a prof for these class
This was the best class ever!! I absolutely loved attending this class. The professor was excellent at teaching and very helpful to students. She made the material easy to understand. I would definitely recommend this professor to anybody!
Be prepared to be tested on useless stuff, she's a good teacher but the questions she asks are VERY specific.
She's alright, a lot of times I personally found her pretty confusing. She doesn't really make lectures fun, a lot of people in my class slept. Her tests are pretty long, and really into detail. Her midterms were pretty long considering the amount of stuff you actually cover in her class isn't a lot. She gives pretty brief notes.
She's an excellent prof. She cares about her students, always willing to help. Kids who don't like her are the people who expect everything to be given to them on a silver platter for exams. She clearly outlines everything for exams, however you will have to skim over the textbook because she will ask a few questions out of it, which aren't hard.
She's a great prof! Easy midterms as long as you read the text book and review her lecture notes. She likes to test on little things she makes you do in class, so pay attention and come to class. Lisa is so pleasant and has a great sense of humour! She's definitely my favourite prof I've ever had!
Lisa is the greatest prof, she makes everything super clear. However, sometimes she lectures a little too fast so its hard to write down everything she says, so make sure you pay really good attention because things she goes over in class but arent on the powerpoint will be tested.
She's a gem, love her! Make sure you read the textbook for her exams and pay attention in class. Easy A
Pay attention in class! Textbook is mandatory, as it is fair game for exams. All exams are all multiple choice and some fill in the blank. She is such a super nice person, who is always avaliable to answer any questions you may have. I would definitely take another class with her!
Great prof.
She is very clear when speaking in lecture, and varies her tone of voice so you don't get bored. She seems genuinely nice and always gives positive feedback if you answer a question in the huge lecture hall. She seems like she actually cares if you understand the material. I would take a class from her again. Read the textbook!
I've quite enjoyed her class actually. She's always smiling and upbeat, and she creates the exams in a way that favours the students who actually show up to class. So, show up to class. She will start questions like, " In class we discussed..". I would definitely take a class by her again.
Took 105 after having taken a couple 200 level psych courses and expected it to be boring and a waste of time. Dr. Smithson made going back to basics so interesting. I loved going to lectures because she talked about a quite a few very cool studies and engaged students in discussions about grey topics. It was great and she is SO approachable.
I am a third year student and I decided to take her class as an option for myself, I didn't expect much from a 100 level course but Lisa blew me away. She is very clear in lecture and absolutely loves class discussion. She is the most approachable teacher I have ever had.
Great prof
Lisa is very passionate about her work and this absolutely shines through in her teaching. I don't recommend trying to take notes, as she goes through slides too quick, but printing notes off works great. Lisa is very approachable and eager to help in anyway she can. She also doesn't shy away from class discussions, making it easier to be attentive
Dr. Smithson is such an amazing prof. I expected psych 104 to be a boring class, but Dr. Smithson made it my favorite class of the semester! Her exams are fair, and she is always willing to help you. She puts in so much effort to make sure she is well prepared for her lectures and it really shows. Take her class, study and get an A!
I wasn't sure about this class but Smithson made it good! She's super clear and makes sure you know what you need to know - just show up for class! Make sure you do the textbook readings, they definitely give some added info needed. Tests were easy and she's very helpful if you don't understand something, highly recommend!
Dr. Smithson is a sweetheart! Such a great prof. She's always up-beat and excited to teach, which makes class so enjoyable. I've had some pretty amazing profs, but she is probably my favorite. Her exams are fair, read your textbook and her notes. She gives two midterms and a cumulative final. Make sure to pay attention to her examples!
She is a very good prof. She speaks extremely well, posts all of her notes, and is extremely clear of what she expects out of her students. I would definitely recommend her and this class, if you put in the right amount of work - which is moderate - you will do well. The tests aren't very difficult, and she isn't hard on the eyes either.
Dr. Smithson is absolutely adorable! She is such a great prof, who is crystal clear in her lectures, and is always willing to help you. Make sure to read all of the textbook, focus on the diagrams too! Take her class if you can, it's very enjoyable!
Awful. Super dry, don't go to class without a red bull before..
Dr. Smithson really made this class enjoyable. I was not interested in psych at all before this class, but she made me want to come to class every day because she is so enthusiatic. The material is dry, but she knows it inside and out, and she presents it with such clarity. I would take another class with her in a heartbeat if I could.
Dr. Smithson is a lot of fun! I am so glad I took her class because she is such a great prof. I was really impressed with her presentation of the material, and her enthusiasm. Her final was the hardest exam, but it was not too hard. Just study all of her notes and read the text book, and your guranteed at least a B. Take her class if you can!
I HATE her style of teaching. She tests stuff that she never mentions in class, and might be in page 256 paragraph 4 sentence 3. As well, her notes are VERY vague. She explains things clearly, but expects you to catch all the important stuff she voices out loud in time to write it. Sometimes I can, but other times, it's easy to miss. AVOID!!! :(
Very interesting lectures, she is obviously passionate about what she's teaching and uses helpful powerpoints. Easy class to do well in, just be ready to do some reading.
Dr. Smithson is passionate about her class ad it shows, she knows the material inside out. The two midterms were fairly easy, final was a little more difficult as it was cumulative. The course itself is a little dry. Most questiosn come directly from the lecture and lecture notes, only a few questions come from the text.
Newer to teaching, clearly. Went to see her for her office hours and was condescending and disregarded what I was confused about. Fill in the blank was often vague and left out key words. Questions are fair but often test on her specific wording rather than the student grasping the concept. I have received AA- in other psychs. SHUSHES THE CLASS.
Smithson is so kind, cheerful, and passionate! She can be pretty quite and somewhat boring but if you like psychology you'll love it. Very fair test, not easy but certainly possible to get A.
She is the most annoying professor I have ever had. She made us teach ourselves the rest of the notes before the first midterm, extremely picky with fill-in-the-blank answers, has questions that could have more than one answer and takes questions off tests afterwards without rewarding those who got it right. also super boring and a very slow talker
A lot of time were invested in this course. Exams were tough and fill in the blank questions are almost impossible to do. Must read the textbook to get a decent grade. Need over 90% for an A and final is cumulative. Wish that I took this course with another prof.
Her notes doesnt show clear relation between and within the material, you'd better work on this in order to understand the content since there will be tons of things to remember; reading is kinda necessary; oh btw her notes are just from the book; it works good if you use it as an outline for reviewing
Lisa is a fairly new teacher and you can tell. Must read the textbook as she uses a lot of questions based on textbook material. She is a very slow lecturer and talks very calmingly so you might fall asleep. Her tests are okay, but some questions are so specificvague that you would never know them. She's not too bad, but she is inexperienced.
Dr. Smithson is amazing. She speaks clearly and is so enthusiastic. People who don't like her are the ones who don't want to put a little work in. Her class isn't hard at all in comparison to science courses, but I guess it might be harder than some of the other psych classes. She is super nice and encouraging, I would highly recommend her!
I think she's a great prof, she's easy to approach after class or during her office hours. Her tests are quite picky, especially the questions that she chooses from the textbook. The textbook can be tedious to the point it seems that each chapter never ends so makes sure you pace yourself.
She's a little fast paced sometimes, but she'll repeat if you ask. Her exams are MC and fill in the blanks, also asks the littlest things you don't tend to focus on in the textbook. Textbook reading is required, but it is a little of a dread to read, they are long and never ending. Test on stuff she said that aren't on lecture notes
Dr. Smithson was an amazing prof. Such an easy course with her teaching it. She has a great delivery, and is very approachable. Loved her and the course!
Was not a huge fan of Lisa, she seems quite stuck up. Her exams include multiple choice and fill-in-the-blank, and she has a tendency to remove questions from exams and not give credit to those who got them right. Pleasant enough in office hours but not willing to discussdebate answers and marking. Would not take a class with her again.
She is the kindest person I know. Lectures are so interesting and she is SO up to date on the current research that simple conversations with her lead me to learning so much. She encourages class discussion, and will engage in respectful debate after class. She once told me I could go to her if I ever wanted to talk about the futurecareer stuff.
Took 223 with Dr. Smithson over the spring/summer term and can't say enough good things. Not only is she extremely passionate about what she teaches you, she is more than willing to help when you seek it. Some of the questions on her exams were based on smaller details, but overall if you put in effort you'll do well.
Lisa is a wonderful lecturer who uses a variety of techniques to keep the lectures engaging and interesting. She speaks clearly and slowly, and is more than willing to answer questions. I couldn't believe how helpful she was outside of class hours (and even her office hours). You won't regret taking her classes. Posts slides that are informative.
Lisa is a wonderful professor, she has such an enthusiastic approach to teaching and makes each lecture fun and easy to understand. Always there to answer questions and gives really good feedback,
Lisa is a great professor. She is very clear and knowledgeable about lecture material, tells you exactly what you need to study, and so helpful and awesomely kind outside of class. A little bit picky with short answer questions, but excellent prof!
Lisa isn't very helpful. She takes forever to respond to emails and does not clarify anything in class. Woul not reccomend.
honestly, unless you NEED to take this class dont take it. its NOT a gpa booster.. it would be if her written response wasn't so UNFAIR. avoiiidddddd.
Short questions are extremely hard that most people got 1 or 2 points out of 5. She doesnt care about students and aim to make the test tough. Not a GPA booster and wont recommend her class.
Hard to get good grade reading textbook is better than going to the lectures
Midterm mc was easy but the short answer was reallly tough and average for the short answer on the second midterm was about 45%. I think she made the final easy because of the difficulty of the midterms. dont take as a gpa booster unless its your main class and u have time to memorize word for word for the written
The multiple choice portion of her exams are rather easy if you are attentive in class and study. She is picky for the written response, but it is not impossible for you to do well on them if you prepare properly for the exam. She gives good feedback on papers and is always willing to help. Go to class, study, and you can get an A
I highly recommend this class as it is very interesting and Lisa is a great prof! This class consists of 2 (non-cumulative) midterms and a cumulative final exam. All of her exams were fair but the short answer questions are a bit tough. The final exam was easy though, this class is an easy A!
On the exam's she has short answer components and those are always marked very hard. The class average was 40-50% on both midterms. I'm convinced the short answer was used to bring the class average down. Other than that, I really enjoyed her class. She has high energy and makes class interesting. Make sure to write down everything she say's!!!
Absolutely terrible - lectures were unbearable. She always says the word "Beautiful" whenever anyone says anything. The short answer on tests is so unfair - the second midterm's was based on 4 sentences in the textbook, so nearly everyone failed that section.
She's a really enthusiastic prof! she reads from her laptop notes a lot and says testable material outloud (which is not on her slides), so be ready to type as fast as you can. She's really nice though and extremely helpful with feedback, however she is still a tough marker.
Her lecture style's idiosyncratic, but it helped me feel engaged. When students had tough questions she would find new references to answer them, which is very helpful and respectful. Exams were OK. Many questions were quite specific, so learn your material. Practice exams were a bit easier than real, so don't slack if you find the practice easy.
Dr. Smithson is one of the best profs I've come across. She's always willing to help out if something is unclear, however, she is also one of the toughest graders I've ever had. Many of the MC Q's came down to a 1 word difference between a right and wrong answer, and the written required a lot of work for the minimal marks. But, I'd still recommend
I had Lisa for an evening class which was 3and I would honestly barely show up, i would only study her lecture notes 2 nights before or even the night before and get an easy B. Has about 2 questions on videos she would show in class. Easy A if you actually put some effort into the class. Don't really need to go just make sure you know the material.
One of the best psychology professors hands down, very caring and explains things very clearly, if you attend all lectures you'll get A as she covers everything in lecture
Good lectures! She makes everything easy to understand. Would recommend getting the e-book and doing the quizzes on there for each chapter. Go to class because some of the questions on tests are from slides she shows in class but doesn't post on e-class. Really awesome overall.
Lisa is so sweet. She really wants her students to succeed and is more than willing to help you with any clarification you need. Her lectures are very straightforward, engaging, and she is wonderful at explaining concepts clearly. Tests are fair. Take good notes, she tests a lot on what she says in class. Highly recommend.
I had her for the spring term and I must say that she was a very amazing prof. She was very engaging in her talks and gives you what you need to know.
Lisa is awesome! One of the best profs I've had. She clearly loves what she teaches and is very enthusiastic. She can talk a little quieter in a big lecture theatre, but is very clear otherwise. Tests are NOT hard if you write down what she says and study her notes; tests are very fair. Would definitely take again!
Grade: Paper, Midterm x2 (MC/SA), Final (MC/SA). This course is overloaded because there's so much information they need to teach. I thought the midterms were fair, but the final was not. A lot of the material tested is not in powerpoint slides or in textbook. With a cumulative final, this was hell. Also, way too medicine-focused for arts psyc.
Her exams are fair but there's so much info that it takes a lot of time out of your schedule just to study for a course that's otherwise supposed to be simple. I think this semester was the first time she included a paper - which was not difficult, it just wasn't explained clearly. Also, unless you type everything she says, you'll need the textbook
I thought this class would be an interesting and easy class, but it ended up being my lowest grade. You are required to right a paper and the instructions were very unclear. The material isn't hard to understand but there is a lot of material, so i spent hours and hours reading and studying and never felt ready for the tests.
I really glowed up in this class.. 69 first middy to 97 on the second. The trick is... go to class. Read the textbook (don't dwell but once over each chapter is essential). Study her notes, as she tests directly from them. Exams are fair, but she will ask difficult Q's too. SWEETEST prof. Am planning on taking another class with her.
Great prof, lectures were enjoyable and interesting. Exams were fair, if you studied and came to class there weren't many surprises. Whenever she was asked a question she was unsure of she would always come back next class with an answer and relevant supporting research. Super helpful if you talk to her, would highly recommend.
302 and 203 got No text books, readings are unclear - not even links to them you have to go hunt ! - unclear on most details and you are on your own if you miss a single class - very unhelpful and the class is too long and dry , regret choosing her class over others
Understand the textbook to a T and you'll do very well. Short answer questions are specific, but take good notes in lecture and you'll do fine. Amazing lectures and she is very engaging. Best prof I have ever had
One of the better night classes I've taken. She lectures in a way that is engaging and allows you to get through 3 hours. She also gives you breaks at just the right times. You can really tell she cares about her students and doesn't make you feel bad for asking questions. Would recommend Dr. Smithson and Nonverbal Communication course to anyone!
I love Lisa! 2x 20% midterms, 12% easy in class participation, 10% project and 38% final. Exams are MC and short answers, EVERYTHING that is tested is on the notes or was said in class. Everything. So fair. Lots of material but easy. Project is hard, highest mark was 90. Know statements, results and facts word by word, no joke. Missed A+ by 1%.
Lisa is amazing prof, definitely the best prof I've had at the uni so far. She is super caring and you can talk to her very easily in person; however, she takes forever to reply to emails. If you ask her a question and she isn't able to answer it then she will definitely find an answer for the next lecture. Her exams are MC and SA, not too hard.
Such a great professor who knows what she is talking about. But she put way too much emphasis on the final exam being worth 38% and cumulative. Very hard to study for without much guidance on what to focus on.
I found Lisa's lectures to be quite engaging and I learned quite a bit of the course material in lecture. Beyond that, I only studied the lecture notes and did not find the textbook as essential to do well. There were two midterms, a two page paper with a straightforward rubric, and a final. The exams were MC and written which is quite easy.
She can appear very intimidating but she is very sweet and a fair tester. She tests on very specific details only discussed in class so don't skip!!
Lisa is excellent; easily in my top 5 of all time. She is engaging, encourages student participation & provides meaningful examples. She never makes you feel dumb for speaking up in class. This course has 2 midterms, short group work assignments in most lectures, 1 presentation project done in pairs & a cumulative final. No textbook.
Very easy going and funny, great lecturer. Her class is pretty interesting and her voice is very clear. If you take notes well in class you won't need the textbook, but if you don't then you'll need it! 100% recommend-- she's very caring, and exams are fair and mostly multiple choice.
Lisa is really engaging and makes the course content interesting, so she's very easy to listen to. Getting the textbook isn't required but I found it very helpful to cement course concepts in my memory. Try to remember the midterm questions that most of the class got wrong, as she'll re-use them on the final!
Best professor I ever had. She's an amazing lecturer, gives a break every one hour in her 3 hour class. If you don't want to read the textbook, get ready to go to class and write everything she says down. I didn't read the textbook and studied purely from the lecture slides and the notes I took. 100% recommend.
One of my favorite profs. She is really charismatic and it makes listening to her lecture easy and engaging. She seems really easy going and friendly, I appreciate that, it makes her approachable
Dr. Smithson is the best professor I've ever had. She is so caring, friendly, approachable, and gives fair assessments. I always looked forward to her classes and I wish I wasn't in my last year of my degree, otherwise I would definitely take more classes with her. Highly highly highly recommend!
It would be nice if this prof replied? No office hours, no replies to her students. Useless.
Seems like she really cares about her students. Very approachable. Talks really fast so you'll probably miss some things here and there. Not much else to say.
Great prof and super nice. Her lecture slides are really good but a lot is said in class so skipping could cause some problems. Tests were average difficulty.
Great lecturer, makes it sound as though she is performing. The class is very information-heavy but she makes it better by being enjoyable to listen to. Lots of memorization for exams (just MC and SA). One paper worth 15% at semesters end that is fairly straightforward and easy. Would recommend.
Love Lisa, just had some difficulties understanding her at times. She talks super fast. Her exams are way shorter than they need to be. They had 50MC for an 80minute period, people would be done 40minutes in! Overall, she's really nice and cares lots.
Lisa was amazing! Her powerpoints were quite descriptive and overlapped with audio which made the material relatively easy to understand. The class project was also easy and she communicated well with us before the midterm. She also marked quite fair on the midterm! Overall, would recommend!
Took Spring course (online) with her. Great lecture videos and she is very nice. She replied to my emails when I had questions.
Incredible professor teaching an incredible class. Super impressed with how clear she is in explaining non-verbal communication concepts and guiding students to study the right material. Would recommend the course and the instructor to everyone, quite possibly the best class I've taken in my four years of undergrad
This was my 3rd class with Lisa! Caring &Amazing prof! Mark was based on midterm (30%), final (30%), video assignment (30%) & learning journals (10%). 2 hour time limit for each exam but we could do it at any time within 24 hours. Taught via PowerPoint lectures asynchronous which was very helpful! Responded to emails fast. Overall, would recommend!
Class was taught asynchronous and the exams consisted of short answer questions with 150 word limit. Imo she marked fairly easy on the midterm but hard on the assignment and final. Appreciated how she gave us 2 hours to do the exam which was more than enough. Responded fast to emails as well. Great prof, would recommend again.
Great prof. Interesting material, lots of it is common sense or easy knowledge. Take this class!!!!
She might be good for junior courses but not higher level classes. I spent over 80 hours in this class and ended up with a mediocre grade. She gave me a 50% for accidental having my finger tips out of frame for 0.5 seconds for a video assignment. This grading criteria was NOT specified on the rubric. Stay away if you like clear grading criteria.
Had her for Nonverbal Communication online. Super caring prof and readily responded to emails but she was a tough marker. There was a midterm, video assignment and final, with both exams having 4-5 long answer questions and a maximum word count of 150. The questions asked a lot, so it was hard to answer everything under the word count.
The winter term of 2021 and she teaches strictly from annoying power points with audio. there is no communication with her and no office hours. does no feel like I have a prof, I learn way more from crash course videos than I do from her class. the power point format is so disengaging. This prof almost made me lose my passion for psych :(
Im not sure how she is in person, but her online lectures are so frustrating. She speaks too fast and theres no way to slow the video down so you have to rewatch each slide like 3 times to catch everything. She tests strictly on lectures so you have to make sure to absorb every little thing she says. Exams are all written, only MC quizzes.
For an online course, her delivery wasn't the best. Strictly asynchronous course - so no zoom lectures. All quizzes were MC w/ insufficient time to complete them. Exams all written response but seriously too difficult for a 100 lvl course. Seems like she has good reviews in the past, maybe she's better in person but definitely not online!!
Great prof - clear slides and delivery - absolutely fair tests. Only complaint is PowerPoint slides format, I simply converted all the PowerPoint to a single video everytime and it was no problem watching the lectures after that.
Great Class! Information was very interesting! Class was taught asynchronous. For the final and midterm we had short answer questions and two hours to complete. Quizzes were on a time limit but if your studied they were fairly easy.
Dr. Smithson is a great prof! She is organized, kind, and passionate. PowerPoints were organized and informative, with overlapping audio to further explain the material. 3 short quizzes, and two, 2 hours long exams with 4 SA questions each - all open book! No need to read to textbook, she doesn't test on material exclusively in the text.
shes not a tough grader, thats for sure. but her exams consist of 4 short answers in 2 hours which trust me... is easier than 90 mc with time crunch .
Professor Smithson was a really great prof for it being an asynchronous class. Lectures were very clear and not boring at all, and she was extremely easy to contact. Midterm and final were open book, 4 written questions, and she also had one research paper. Overall a really great experience and I would totally recommend taking her class!
The class part was pretty easy, but we only had two exams, and I found that she wanted us to go into extra detail beyond lecture material. The quizzes are easy and helpful, and the lab portion was straightforward. Overall, I would definitely retake it, but the exams are a little far-fetched.
Watch the lectures and you're golden
This course consisted of 3 multiple choice quizzes, 2 written exams, & a 'lab' component. The written exams required you to be creative & think outside of the box at times. Overall I really liked the course with Lisa & thought she was a great prof. This course was fully asynch so it was hard to connect with the prof but just reach out, she's great.
Dr. Smithson is very accessible for questions through email and gave really good insight through that. We had midterm, final and written assignment each worth 30%. Midterm and final were 4 Short answer and open book. The questions were really easy and she marked them easily as well. Overall if you watch lectures and review the notes, it's an easy A
one midterm, one final, one paper - 30% each and then 10% for research. the lectures were kind of boring but the material isn't hard at all and the exams were open book. 4 written in two hours. all in all, she's a good prof and tests on what she teaches
The content of the class is quite boring but Smithson's lectures are easily digestible and understandable. Class is 1 midterm, a research paper and a final. Both the midterm and final are 4 short answer questions with 2 hours to write them, really simple exams if you read through the slides. All in all, a fairly easy class to get through!
Lisa is the most caring and considerate prof I've had! Her lectures were extremely engaging and followed a clear stream of concepts which promoted my learning significantly. The textbook supported my answers for open book exams as evidence. My 1 complaint is highly weighted exams (2 midterms, 1 final). Overall, amazing course and an amazing prof!
I didn't have a lot of interaction with Lisa, but she came off as very caring and knowledgeable. Although her lectures are long, they're very concise and rarely contain unnecessary info, unlike other profs that tend to go on tangents and leave you confused about what you need to know. Her class was shockingly easy so definitely go for her.
Lisa is very caring and her lectures are super clear and concise, so you'll always know what you need to study for the exams. Psyco 104 seems like it's already an easy class, but if you want to boost your GPA, definitely go for Lisa because she makes learning very easy.
The format of Dr. Smithson's online lectures? Terrible. The content? Easy to absorb and presented in a digestible way. Her tests are a piece of cake and she gives lots of time to complete them. If you're good at self-motivating, this class will be a breeze.
very good prof. midterm and final not difficult at all. easy marker on the paper
Lisa was an amazing prof and she clearly outlined what she expected from you. The tests she gave were timed so you really needed to know your material. The exams were all written but she gave you practice questions which helped prepare.
My 3 friends and I did a total of 10 hours of collaborative studying for this class, and we all did great on the midterm and final. The exams are literally open book and non-cumulative, like bro what more can you ask for. Lisa is a great lecturer and responds fast to emails and questions. Oh, and she also did studies on sleep which is really cool.
Very interesting class. She provides a lot of extra insight that she tests on exams that are not directly on slides, so it is important to pay attention.
Professor Smithson was a great prof for online learning and took lots of time to explain things in detail. Lots of lecture material to go through for online learning took longer than average. Attending lectures is very important as she uses many of the examples she stated on her tests. Need to know her lectures very well for tests, but very fair.
Super easy if you put a bit of effort in. I took it online and the tests were open book so maybe that made it easier? But regardless, I studied like a max of 10 hours the entire term and got good grades. Never used the textbook because her lectures were enough. She has a nice voice.
Most interesting and inspiring psych profs at uofa. Her classes have 3 small quizzes, 3 small journal write-ups, and final exam. Super easy grader and easy quizzes. The final exam was a bit tough but it was 5 written questions and one of the questions was straight from her practice exam. Highly recommend Dr Smithson!!
One of my favorite profs at the uofa, never disappointed by her. No textbook required for this class and not too many assignments. No extra reading. Shes a lifesaver during COVID times.
I found the class really interesting, the quizzes were multiple choice and journals were pretty easy, but I didn't like the final exam. It was 5 short answer questions where you had to design experiments, so you had to be creative. If you take this class make sure to check the format the final exam and prepare for it in advance
Absolutely loved this class. Super interesting material & easy marks/grading. 3 assignments where you can relate course material to your life, 3 mc quizzes and 1 written final (5 questions total). Final was probably the hardest part but still was pretty straightforward. No textbook needed for the course which I LOVED. All lecture based
Dr. Smithson is a great prof. Quizzes are fair if you study, but be sure to memorize everything she says, and not just what's written on the slides. Even though assessments are open book, there is a strict time limit and you won't have time to look everything up if you don't prepare. Really enjoyed the lectures and the content was interesting!
Class was asynchronous & all quizzes/ tests were open book. Nothing on the notes was on her tests, it is all what she would say (and typically the little things that are briefly mentioned). How to make a massive document and type word for word to do well in this class. Final grade came from 2 quizzes (15q), 2 journal entry, 5 question S.A. final
Her class is comprised of 3 quizzes (15% each), 2 out of 3 reflection journals (15% total) and a 5 written response Final exam. The final exam is VERY intense if you are not familiar with the course materials and you NEED to make LOTS of notes for her lecture (I did 400+ pages). But for final she is testing our understanding rather than memory
3 quizzes (15% each, but she took your lowest mark one away to make it 27.5 marks each), 2 reflection journals (15% in total) and 5 questions written response for final. The written response is more testing on your understanding of the course instead of memorization, 1000 word limit (200 each question) and kinda hard to edit everything in 2 hours.
Quizzes are all based off what she says in her lectures which are extremely long. In order to succeed in this class you have to write word for word what she says in a document. Quizzes and Final were open book, for quizzes it was 15 minutes 15 questions so you literally have no time to look at notes. Final was 5 written questions, very difficult.
I have taken three classes with Lisa now and all I can say is she is amazing. If you actually put in the work and listen to the lectures, you can do amazing in her classes. There are three quizzes (each 15%), two discussion posts (15%), and a long answer final exam (35%). The material is interesting too. Overall, would recommend to anyone.
Decent prof but says so much stuff that doesn't connect to each other nicely - however, very caring and approachable!
Be prepared to watch the lecture recordings at 0.5x speed because of how fast she speaks, because she tests on very small things she will mention extremely briefly in a 1 1/2 hour lecture recording. Other than that the actual course content was interesting but I spent most of my time writing word for word what she said so I didn't miss anything
As long as you write down word for word notes from lectures, quizzes are a breeze. Material is interesting and well presented. A little sad you don't have any direct interaction with Lisa as it is treated like an asynchronous online course, but she was quick to respond to emails when needed.
Lisa is the best prof, I have taken so many classes with her now. Everyone complains about 239 but that is simply the course material being heavy. There are three 15% tests, 2 reflection journals (15%), and 40% final, all open book. Write everything down and you'll great. Highly recommend!!
this is the second class ive taken with lisa and it was formatted the same as the 327 class i took with her. it is easy to succeed in her class as long as you take DETAILED notes and can ctrl+f quickly for the quizzes. Your biggest challenge is going to be the written final, but you can definitely succeed on it as long as you keep up with material
Supportive and wants to help as best she can. Only critique is sometimes her lectures are really dense and sometimes don't connect/flow very well so it can be hard to follow/pay attention. Otherwise, simple class; easy grading for assignments. Would have liked a grade back for our finals though (Spring course). Also def have to take thorough notes
Prof very caring individual, always able to reach her and friendly. The class itself is kinda jumbled and the midterm grading was annoying; grading criteria cared more about if you understood how to structure an experiment than actual course content. TA not helpful- often tried convincing me I was wrong when I wasn't (Course notes proven).
Excellent content and excellent delivery. Reasonable pace. Exams reflective of the coursework.
Nice prof, but be aware of her online classes. The quizzes are worth a lot (15% Each) and to do good on them, be prepared to remember obscure things mentioned in the lecture, as the quizzes would test on trivial non sense rather than more concrete concepts.
Her slides are always interesting and informative. This is my 2nd class with her and she explains all the material really well. I do wish though there was more time for the quizzes. Overall a great prof and you'll learn a lot from this class.
Prof Smithson is a great person and is very caring towards her students. The midterm/quizzes were 15 minutes and sometimes tested on things she had said one time during the lecture videos. The final exam was a bit tough but nothing you can't handle! Overall a wonderful person!
Once you adopt Lisa's teaching style, you can do well in this class! Her lectures are asynchronous and while they are information heavy, there's only about 1.5 hours of audio to go through per week. This gives students lots of time to type up her audio and make sense of the context. Lisa is extremely approachable and caring!
*PSYCH 212* Be prepared for an unreal amount of work. Every week you will have to submit 2-4 assignments (quizzes, homework, peer-review, paper, etc.). The final is 3 assignments; final paper (you worked on throughout the semester), a cumulative quiz & a final exam Although these assignments are typically an easy grade (~85%) it is a lot of work.
Her class was awful as the lectures were all in powerpoint form with only the audio files. It made it really difficult to go back if you missed something and since she spoke really fast this was a recurring problem. She has no transcripts available and I needed to get a transcription app just to get through the material with less issues.
Dr. Smithson is AMAZING. She presents lectures in PPTs with attached audio files. She does speak a bit quickly but you could always go back and catch what she was saying. I've never met a prof who responds to questions as fast as she does and she is very providing in terms of help. 10/10 Prof IMO. Exams are all open book too and no midterms.
She uses powerpoint presentations with audio files for lectures, which I like. I can get through a weeks worth of slides (usually 30-45 slides) in an hour or two. Her quizzes are easy if you write down most of what she says and ctrl + f it. The ONLY thing that bothers me is she says "in terms of" every other sentence.
Lisa seems to be a great prof with engaging and comprehensive lectures. She talks very quickly during lectures, but it really isn't bad once you adjust to her teaching style. She also is accessible in and out of class and accommodating. I don't know my midterm mark, yet but I felt the questions were fair. Midterms are online + application based.
Lisa is a great prof, she always made the lectures super engaging and I feel like I've learnt concepts which I will remember long after this class is over which is rare. Sometimes it felt like she was going too fast but she doesn't test on super minor details, but rather overall understanding. If you have the chance absolutely take her class!
Dr. Smithson is a wonderful person. The class was very interesting and the setup of the class was conducive to learning. My only warning for taking this class is that there is A LOT of note-taking and the quizzes are stressful. I would spend 5+ hours a week on this class, as the lectures are very time-consuming to finish.
Smithson for 239 was amazing. Just make sure to transcribe what she says word for word and you're set for the midterms. The final's completely written but it wasn't too hard if you have everything that she says transcribed.
Amazing professor with a great heart. One of my favourite classes was her 405 and she taught me so much useful techniques for anxiety that I applied to my own life. One of the professors you think about years later because they impact your life for the better.
Lisa is an amazing professor who is passionate about the material and who genuinely cares about her students. Her lectures are very informative, and she encourages discussion and asking questions during class. She is also accessible outside of class and quick through email. I would definitely recommend taking a class with her!
Dr. Smithson is one of the best professors I've had at the UofA. Good feedback, quick in responding, very helpful, knowledgeable. 100% recommend her classes. She will test you on what she says during her lectures so take good notes and you'll do amazing. 3 quizes, 3 very short homework assignments, and a final.
Lisa taught the content in an interesting and engaging way in her asynchronous lectures. The 3 quizzes were based directly from the slides and her recordings so detailed notes are needed, but they, along with the 2 assignments and final, were very easy to prepare for.
If you are taking Psych 223 I can't stress enough she is the best. Teaching style is amazing, very caring of her students and as long as you pay attention and do the work you will do great.
Dr. Smithson was absolutely amazing. She would respond to emails extremely quickly. Her midterms were easy as they were all based on what she said in her recordings. Definitely recommend her 100% for 239. Just make sure to take down what she says word for word on her lecture recordings and you're set for the entire course.
hands down the best professor at u of a for psychology at least. her three hour lectures were engaging the whole time and her kindness and empathy for her students was an amazing example to be setting for people who want to follow that career path. there's a reason her classes are always full
She is so nice I love her
Professor Smithson's 239 class is informative, but requires dedicated note-taking. Lectures are packed, so using unstuck ai alongside the textbook helps summarize key points. Overall, an engaging course if you stay on top of the workload.
I have taken an online class with her and it was nothing compared to the in person. She made a 3 hour class feel like it ended too soon. We were given 3 quizzes and got to pick best 2/3 and Best 3/4 participation marks (which are online submissions so you don't need to feel uncomfortable). Exams are also online/open book which is great
Content of class was great. You have to watch the lectures if you wanna be able to do quizzes in time limit. Final is 5 written questions kid of hard b/c each question requires knowledge of each lecture. But it was learning about the concepts.
Great prof. the lectures were interesting and the midterms (all MC) weren't too bad just make sure that you understand your notes/the lecture. The final was manageable as it was 5 written questions but the 200 word limit was challenging. Lisa responds fast to emails which is appreciated. Would definitively take her again!
TAKE HER IF YOU SEE HER NAME, she is the most accommodating and helpful professor, the only thing is her midterms are all multiple choice 15 questions and 15 minutes which was a draw back, but allows for you to boost your grade.
I took this online class as one of my major requirements, and it was one of my favourite classes I have taken in my four years at UofA. The lectures were posted as Powerpoints with audios on each slide. Her exams were fair and covered the slides, as well everything she says in lecture. Take detailed notes on each slide, and the exams will be easy.
Dr. Smithson is incredibly caring and always willing to help. Her lectures are long but engaging, and if you make good notes on the slides (each slide has audio attached), you'll be all set. She's very clear about expectations and grading, and all exams are open book. If you have the chance to take ANY class with her, 100% do it!
SHE IS THE BEST PROF EVER!!!!!!! TAKE HER IF YOU CAN!!!!!! FIGHT FOR THAT SPOT IN HER CLASS!!!! she is so so so so so caring and i full on recommend her to anyone. she is a literal saint and very knowledgeable! cares so much about her students! she tests on 3 quizzes worth 15% each and 3 journals worth 15% overall which i think are grade boosters.
While the format of this course is easy, after so many weeks of ridiculously long lectures with way too much yapping in each slide I think I would go into fight-or-flight response if I hear her voice again.
Lisa Smithson is an amazing prof, there is lots of info in the class but not hard grasp if you show up to class as she does add in testable material that are not on the slides to benefit those attending class. In spring term: 2/3 quizzes needed 30% total (15 questions/minutes), 3/4 class participation 10% total, 1 written midterm and final!
Dr. Smithson is one of the best, if not, the best professor in the Psychology department at UofA. Her lectures, though very long, are very engaging and really set you up for success for the quizzes and her exams. She encourages a lot of class discussions which makes the class kind of attendance-mandatory as she tests a lot on those.
Her slides have very minimal information but her lectures have too much information, so much that it's hard to absorb. Her “open book” quizzes are not actually open book so you have to watch lectures on time and make sure you memorize all the info. One 50 minute lecture takes hours to complete and before you know it you have another quiz worth 12%.
Reflection journals were basically free marks. Easy quizzes, but didn't like how they were 1 Q per minute. Midterm + final were structured similarly of 5 written Qs, but the 200 word limit per Q made it hard to be concise while going in depth. Overall great prof, attendance is a MUST because she tests on class discussions and application stuff.
