Good teacher, tests are a little difficult but overall fairly easy class (computer-mediated)
Tests are easy as long as you do your homework on a regular basis. She goes over every prob you have with the hw, even if there's a million of them...which there often is, I mean it's calculus for pete's sake. Gives lots of extra credit too.

Prof. Sowinski is structured in her lectures and generally doesn't try to trick students with overly indistinct questions. There are 5 exams and 10 quizes plus no HW. She issues practice tests before every exam, is easily available for help, gives lots of EC (about 90 pts in my class), and doesn't go off on tangents.
she knows that i'm a international, she let me to use a dictionary/translater in a test, she will give extra time for your test even you're finished or you ahd check it already! she wants her student to try their best!!
She knows that im an American Student. She totally gives extra credit so i can make up for all the failed quizes.
hard class. need to study n keep up in lecture! shes organized n keeps to schedule. offers e/c..a lot of material to cover..she goes fast cuz she has to. knows her stuff..will help wen u ask for it. gives weekly quizzes. tests straightforward- allows formula sheets
Awful, awful teacher. Grades incredibly hard, although she claims that she will go easy on you. Rushes through lessons way too fast - you're too busy trying to copy her notes to understand what's going on. Gets way behind in the lessons and then expects you to learn two chapters in a week. I would NOT recommend Mrs. Sowinksi. Avoid her at all costs
Nicest and easiest math professor you'll ever find. Offered over 50 pts ec in 16A and over 80 pts in 16B. I ended up with about 105% both semesters! She's incredibly talented and teaches difficult concepts with ease. Just go through her practice packets right before the test - no need to do hw or even touch the book. Actually makes calculus easy!
I really recommend her. very nice teacher. she understand your family. i was gone for 3 weeks still passed with A. easy weekly quize and test if you study. very knowdlable, know what she is doing
She is a very nice person but she is a hard teacher. She goes very fast and gets behind because there are usually too many hw Questions. Do all the E.C. you will need it. DO the homework, get a tutor, and just study your butt off and you will get a good grade b/c she makes you work for your grade.
she goes pretty fast at times but is always willing to help. She'll even help you on exams/quizzes and even the final when you have questions or dont understand how to do a problem. She gets all of her quiz/exam questions from the book so DO THE HOMEWORK, it'll save your grade!!
Good Teacher. Goes fast and you will have to work to keep up.
I had taken Algebra 2 in highschool, but it didn't make much sense until I took this class taught by Mrs. Sowinski. She makes classes fun and interesting, considering the hard material. I'd take her again.
I highly recomend taking any class with Lisa. She is a great teacher. Homework is not graded, but you can use it on the quizes. The tests are not too difficult, and the questions are taken from the textbook. She is very easy to understand and is more than willing to slow down to make sure everyone understands the material.
she is the best math teacher ever. You will understand everything no problem.
I was utterly shocked when we got our first exam back. Class average 64/100 with no A's 23/25 below 79%. Second exam very similar. I tutor math A,B,D, and 12 and I have always finished in the top 2 of my classes and I have a D in the class. Utterly brutal exams, they will slaughter you. Puts on test unrelated material book/lecture doesn't cover.
This class is really hard. But Lisa is a great teacher and explains everything very well. I do reccomend doing the homework and the practice tests if you want to do well in the class though. I definitely recommend her for any math class.
We just got our 4th exam back last week, the average was 66%. Very nice professor, one of the nicest I've met, but don't expect to do so well
Her tests were insane and not even based on what we worked on previously. Test average scores were very low so I know it was not just me. I finally transferred out about halfway through because I only understood half of what she said. I ended up doing much better in a different class
I know that I'm no math wiz, but her class made me feel so incredibly stupid. She's terrible at teaching. I had to drop the class because it was obvious that no matter how hard I tryed I would never pass the class. The tests were absolutely murder, all of the students agreed on that. I wouldn't go anywhere near a class taught by her ever again.
She is absolutely great!
DO NOOOOOT TAKE THIS CLASSS!!!
DO NOT TAKE HER. AWFUL TEACHER.
The tests and quizesss are nothing like what she teaches in class. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS UNLESS YOU WANNA FAIL.
Great teacher! excellent lectures. If you get the chance to take a class with her do it. She get's the class excited for math. Do the practice tests and homework and you'll be good.
She's so nice, but it's hard for me to give her a good rating when she makes her tests so incredibly difficult. Her final exam for this class was BRUTAL, and she didn't give us enough time to prepare for it. Watch out for the take home test--it's 20x more difficult than a regular test (which says a lot).
Sowinski was second rate in my opinion. Not horrible but just mediocre in all categories. I withrew from the class with a good grade because I didn't feel like it was quality instruction.
Good instructor - wants to prepare students for future math classes, so she makes the learning experience challenging. The quizzes and tests were difficult, but studying helps non-lazy students excel and comprehend. If you're looking to skate through Math A, find someone else.
She is a great instructor and tries to challenge you. She drills home important points to prepare you to continue on in math. It's not an easy A, but she definitely prepares you for the tests and quizzes and to continue on. If you go to class every day, pay attention, and do the homework, it's not bad.
It's hard to say negative things about her because she is so nice, but if you do not understand math or struggle, this is not the teacher for you. Never plan on missing a class or you will be lost. Her tests are just plain brutal. She is preparing students for higher level classes, only for math students looking for a challenge.
Lisa is great. I took her after two of my friends suggested her to me. I have failed Math A before and I think now it was because of having bad teachers. She is great, clear and wants you to learn. She cares and has suggestions. She tries to give you as many fair points as she can and if you do the homework you will pass.
I have now taken Professor Sowinski twice for the same class, and both experiences have been awful. She is a decent person, but her class is very difficult. She moves through the material too quickly and uses her own methods over the ones taught in the book. She doesn't seem to care whatsoever if a student succeeds or fails.
Sowinski is an excellent teacher, she's very thorough in her explanations. If you study hard and do all the hw you will do well in her class.
Very nice person. Not very good at explaining things. She gets behind within the first few weeks due to unnecessarily lengthy explanations. Because of this she starts to cut off in the middle of lessons when the class period is over, and leaves a lot of things unexplained and confusing. I'm finding another professor.
I personally benefited from having Lisa as a Professor. She is good at explaining things and takes the time to help students understand things. The homework she assigns isn't mandatory, it is just for you to decide if you need it or not. Use it to your own benefit. I would recommend her, but taking her class is up to you :)
I usually hate math classes but this one wasn't so bad because she explained everything really well and tried to help students as much as possible. I would definitely choose her as a teacher again. She was really nice and pretty helpful overall.
I have taken professor Sowinski twice for two different classes and I've gotten a D both times. She automatically assumes you know the material and she will go through a problem and then at the end tell you that you don't even need to know it. I definitely do not recommend her at all.
She is a thoughtful person and explains concepts relatively clearly. However she wastes immense amounts of time and her tests are HARD. On class average for the first 3 tests were in the 60's. Stay away if you want an A.
Took College Algebra with Lisa this past spring. Lisa is super helpful, really tries to explain things in an understandable way. Lots of material, you need to study for the tests, but she posts study guides and the complete worked out answers. Lets you use a formula sheet for conics because there's a lot to remember. Great professor, great person
Lisa's tests are HARD. But if you pay attention, take notes, do the homework, you will do well in her class. She is very easy going, and happy to help and work with you if you need it. She also gave plenty of extra credit. She really wants her students to succeed and it shows, and you WILL learn in her class. I'd take her again, if she taught calc.
Nice lady, difficult class. You just have to realize that difficultly comes with the territory. The calculus is not supposed to be easy, so you have to be willing to roll your sleeves up and really work hard. Lisa does not collect homework, but you really should do every assignment if you want a shot at a good grade. Her tests are not a cakewalk.
Doesn't give credit for homework, tests and quizzes are obscenely difficult and the final was just the last kick in the teeth. Unless you have taken this class before or have serious free time, avoid like the plague.
As a student who typically struggles with math, I found Lisa's class to be very manageable! She is excellent at explaining concepts and has a lot of good advice to give if you ask her. If you do all the homework questions and take notes on problems she does in class you will have no surprises on her tests or quizzes :) Wish I could take her again!
If your a math major then she is your lady. If your just trying to get your math requirements done and are not a wiz at math best of luck. She is a hard grader, really knows her stuff but expects you to be going at 110% to get good grades. Plus her lectures are long winded, and dry..
Lisa is a great teacher, she has a lot passion in teaching and reaches out to students if you ever need help. She also offers many extra credits assignments. You have to pay attention, take notes and do homework. Most of the problems on quizzes and exams are out of homework problems.
I did not like this teacher at all. if you have a difficult time with math i would not recommend taking her. She doesn't give credit for homework which is unfortunate because that can boost a lot of people's grades up and her tests are ridiculously hard. i didn't think she was that great at teaching either she never really involved the class
PLEASE READ: This is the most obcene grading I've ever encountered. If you are a human calculator you will breeze through. If you are like the rest of mankind you will fail. So dont take this class unless you are a pro at math. It's not enough to understand formulas and concepts, every little thing she takes points for. IMPOSSIBLY DIFFICULT TESTS.
She is helpful and always their if you have any questions or want to know about your grade. Test material is strait out of the book, she just changes the numbers around. If you study and do you homework (not graded) you can pass this class with a B easy, A if you really put in some study time.
Took her two semesters in a row, shes a great instructor, really clear and there for you, definitely wants you to pass the class.
This class was the worst math class I've ever taken. She was confusing begin with and then would yell at the class when we didn't understand the material and failed the tests. During the last three weeks of the semester we had a test every Thursday because she got so far behind, and the tests where nothing like the material we covered in class.
Lisa is a very experienced teacher, and teaches you lots of short cuts or easier ways of doing things. You must go to class or you will struggle.
Overall, it was a difficult class. The final is cumulative, and very hard. You can ask for help, she always welcomes questions, but it can be pretty confusing. What I really liked is that although I asked a lot of questions, she never made me feel stupid, she just answered them.
"You should remember this from college algebra". I have heard her say that at least a hundred times. It is so difficult to remember algebra when you took it 1+ years ago. And of course, it applies to calculus and she expects us to remember it all. She is nice and helpful. The class is super early in the morning though, so it is really hard to focus
Professor Sowinski is amazing. I took this class over the summer and Lisa was able to cover everything you should cover in trigonometry plus parts that many teachers skip. She's a tough teacher but I did not struggle with trig concepts at all once I got to calculus and calculus 2.
I'm telling you now... If you do not want a bad grade, DO NOT take her class. She is hard and she breezed through the material. She thinks everything is simple and a review. She will drop you if you don't show up to class. She is the worst math teacher I've ever had. Awful.
Just NO... stay clear from this one.
Second time taking calc. Great teacher, explains and takes the time to go over homework. Don't get behind on homework is my best advice to anyone taking it. highly recommend.
So hard, barely anyone passed. Gave out too much homework but it doesn't count as part of your grade. I'd recommend not taking her at all!!
She was a nice person, but not so great teacher and I definitely wouldn't recommend taking her, ever. No one understood her, she can't really see very well and stumbles around the classroom. She gives a TON of homework, but she only grades tests and she was not very helpful. Very hard class to pass.
Nice and good at math. Took lots of time to go over hw which was nice but would cut into lecture on upcoming section. Took it over summer which was a big rush because all hw was "due" (assigned but not graded) for next day. Weekly quizzes, test on each chapter, she always told us exactly what would be on each test. Rare good sierra math teacher
Lisa's class is hard, I am a straight A student and I barely managed to get a B. There are 5 tests, about 8 quizzes and the cumulative final. You have textbook problems to do for homework, but she doesn't grade homework so you better study for the tests. She's probably one of the best math professors at Sierra, but the class is challenging.
She doesn't grade homework, so you better be good at quizzes and tests. With that said, she is very forgiving when it comes to grading. As long as you show your work or even just the correct formula, she will give you partial credit. She offers make up exams if the class scores poorly which can really boost your grade! Material is hard. Hire tutor.
Honest ,and balanced review. She is a great teacher when seeking one on one help. Her lectures left me with little help. Some material she really speeds through, but she can get behind and in result puts more pressure on the class. The proof was in how poorly the entire class did. She should make some changes to her curriculum.
Without being to harsh, if the course is offered by another instructor take that one. Always rushed, makes lots of mistakes in lecture. Doesn't update course handouts to account for curriculum changes, errors in study guides. If you need the conceptual ideas behind the pure mechanics you wont get them. Plus side, lots of EC, easy grader on exams.
This professor had us use a 7th edition math120 book, whereas all the math 120 classes used the 12 the edition , she never check your homework, test and quizzes every week. Never sticks, to the study guide, 13 people failed this class 7 dropped early on . No extra credit,
I took her 16A course back in 2010. I really enoyed her class. Her lectures are clear. She gives great feed back. Study guides help you prep for exams. Shes there to help you to succeed and master the materials. Calculus is not easy and not everyone will understand every concept. However Lisa is great at guiding you through it. I recommend her.
She means well... Prone to errors, both in class and on exams. Needs to update materials to reflect current curricula. If available I would take 16a/b from another instructor.
Professor Sowinski likes to give problems on the tests and quizzes that are way harder than what we went over in class and then she complains about how we did bad. She expects every student to be a master at problem solving. Because of this half the class fails every test and then she wonders why we are doing so bad. Not a very good teacher!
Lisa knows her stuff and if you want to pass this class you really need to do problems in the book, as she tends to pick out problems from there for the test. Basically your grade revolves around partial credit. Either way, you'll learn the material and you really have to work for your grade. She's a cool teacher.
She goes very fast through lectures and it is very difficult to keep up. Weekly quizzes and tests are hard. If you skip lecture, you most likely will not pass. If you are a bad test taker, take a different professor or different course if you can. Homework isn't graded.
She's nice enough and is willing to help those that ask. That being said the homework (which wasn't collected) and example problems used in class were typically much easier than those on the weekly quizes / tests which are your grade as mentioned before she does not collect homework. If you are taking this class take lots of notes and be prepared.
Most difficult class because her teaching skills are sub par. Wouldn't recommend her class to anyone. Only tests and quizzes are graded and they are much harder than the homework. A tutor is the only way to get a good grade.
I really liked Prof. Sowinski's class. She's eager to help anyone who asks. Homework is assigned but not collected and time in class where anyone can put questions on the board to help answer. Her exams were not easy but if you got tutoring or help, they were not hard either. We would have quizzes weekly and also some extra credit. Would recommend!
Claims to "believe in partial credit" but still knocks off points despite getting halfway through the solution. It's hard going to her 7 AM class and taking notes half awake while still trying to understand the content. This is Calculus, yet she doesn't seem to grasp that many of us will struggle. She's your typical high school math teacher.
She says she gives a lot of partial credit, that isnt true. Out of my class, only 7 people passed the first exam, and 21 failed. She said it was unacceptable, and that she did examples in class. She needs to stop pointing the finger at the students and realize her teaching methods are inadequate. Im teaching myself at this point. Disappointing.
Not a good professor for someone that needs things explained clearly/step by step. Not graded on anything except quizzes and exams, but the exams are way heavier weighted than the quizzes. Super tough grader, says she gives partial credit but doesnt actually. Its been a horrible term this far. I hope I make it though.
She has no teaching capabilities. On out first test which was mostly algebra review I got the third highest score on the test but it was still a C. She has often giving heavy extra credit to make up for bad teaching. I have decided that Im better off not showing up on days without quizzes and going to math center instead and teaching myself.
Do not take this professor unless you have no other choice. She cannot teach! Our class is constantly confused, and she has to give makeups after each exam to try and give people credit. Majority of people left before the withdraw date. But I really needed the class. Im currently passing, but am in fear of hat these last two weeks will bring.
stay away! Unless you want to ruin your GPA. The grade is only based on exams and quizzes and she is horrible at teaching. Just goes over examples in the book and the actual exams are 10 x harder. Such a regret for not dropping the class like so many other students!
Professor Lisa is a good human being, she's not good at explaining things to a layman. You will understand her only if you have studied some Calc before. She Gives 1 week to do homework which is basically the whole exercise. you have quizes every other week. if you score like 6/10 and 70-80/100 on each test, you will pass the class.
She claims to "believe in partial credit" but doesn't honor it. She does homework problems that students had issues with but she is too fast when doing those and her lectures. Whatever you miss in class is homework. None of the homework prepares you for her quizzes or exams. Her class is the first I've ever dropped after failing the first 2 exams.
Okay I usually dont like writing reviews and spreading slander about a professor, however, I felt that this was necessary. Lisa Sowinski is by far one of the worst Professors Ive ever had. Obviously I never met her in person (maybe shes a good person irl) but as a professor she is awful. Stay away from this class! Especially if its online!
Homework is optional and done through the textbook. You're allowed to use notes & recorded lectures provided for tests and weekly quizzes. There's no zoom attendance for this class, but she has office hours twice a week. DO THE HOMEWORK! Exams are difficult even though they're open note. Be prepared to work very hard in this class. Final worth 25%.
I took this class last semester (fall2020) and I never want to take it again. Professor Sowinski grades everything so heavily with no partial credit on anything. If you miss one question on a test your score is nearly a letter grade. If I didnt have to take her again I wouldnt but she is the only teacher for math16 A&B.
I had to take her 16A class, ended up failing. The next semester I retook the class with a different professor and got an easy A. That should say it all. Now I'm stuck taking her for 16B. HW0%, quizzes(every week)15%, exams50% (75% including final)! Of course exams are nothing like HW/quizzes. GOOD LUCK if you have to take her.
honestly it sucked that she was the only prof for math 16a and b. if you have to take those classes im sorry watch her lectures and do the practice homework. if you dont need to take the class I dont recommend it
I dont recommend this professor she is tough grader. My professor left so we got her as a sub she made the class way harder. So be aware. I ended up dropping the class!!!
Gives lots of homework, not worth your time
She gives off a lot of homework, grades harshly, and non of the homework will prepare you for the test and quizzes.
Would not recommend her to anyone. She was a rude grader and the lectures and homework did not relate to the tests at all.
This professor is terrible at teaching math. I cannot collect a single thing in her lectures because she just goes by her own notes. She is very unorganized while writing on the board so if you miss one thing you will be so lost. No examples and does 2-4 sections a day. She gives a lot of homework. The quizzes and exams are extremely difficult.
Probably one of the worst math professors I've had here at Sierra. Lectures don't help very much, an insane amount of homework worth 0% of the grade, and tests/quizzes make up the entirety of the grade. Wouldn't reccomend.
Class is graded based on 1 quiz/week, 1 discussion board/week, + about 5 exams. The open-note exams make up 50% of your grade & the final is worth 25%. She is an EXTREMELY tough grader. Flexible w/ changing your exam time. Many complaints were made by my classmates + even reported. If you put in enough time and watch her lectures, you'll get an A.
The class is difficult, insane amount of homework and weekly quizzes. But I think that's how the course is no matter what professor you get. I personally find Lisa helpful and despite being a tough grader, she offers detailed feedback and lots of help. Would take her over any other professor , I currently have an A- so will see how we do later on
Way too much material to cover with time given, we were behind schedule on the very first day despite having no intro day unlike every other class. Constantly went overtime with note taking and notes covered only the bare basics of what was on assignments. 75% of ALL her students failed 1st exam. She's very nice, but curriculum needs an overhaul.
LOTS OF NOTES. LOTS OF MATERIAL. Homework was hard to catch up with, there would be 3 homework assignments after every class, there would not only be 15 questions theres parts A-E sometimes so it takes awhile, if you miss a homework its hard to catch up. shes sweet and a good teacher but its alot of work to keep up.
