She is nice, her lectures are well prepared and well delivered. Too bad her tests are all trick questions. Don't buy the book.
Tricky tests. Material isn't hard, but tests are more confusing than tough. Clear powerpoints and very organized. Take other lab teacher if possible
Take other teachers if possible, difficult to deal with.
Tests are tricky! Do not take this class if you can avoid it, if not good luck!
no curves given.
I have never had an instructor like this. She only cares that you explain things exactly the way she understands it. She never uses the book so it is a waste of money. Don't expect to make anything above a C, even if you are an all A student.
Instructor wants you to learn the material to her level. Notes are straight forward but tests are tricky. If you can avoid it take class with another instructor because she really makes it hard. I studied no less than five hours every week for her tests and I got a D for the final grade so use your own judgement.
She is very well organized. In order to get an "A" you have to study very hard lecture material. She tests only on lecture material. Tests are tricky but if material is studied through, you'll get "A". If you have possibility, don't take other classes because of full load. She is very helpfull, but strict. Don't take summer class.
Don't expect A's. Shes twists everything around on her tests. Labs aren't easy either. DO NOT take this along with anatomy or other classes. If you're going for nursing, AVOID taking this class at CPCC. It's a known fact that this class is difficult here. Counts your answer wrong on tests for writing too big or off the lines. This class was a waste
Very nice lady but class is a real torture. Studied like crazy for the tests and still couldn't manage to pull off an A. Ruined my 4.0 with this one. I've heard the other instructor for this class isn't any better though so maybe try a different school for this credit if you are planning on transferring.
I can't believe this lady still has a job. When you ask her a question, she responds with a question back to you. Good luck, her tests are impossible and she marks you wrong if you're a word off. She only cares about what she knows, not what you don't know.
This lady wanted to be a nurse but couldn't make it so she makes it impossible for nursing students to do well, even if they try extremely hard. She brings up her divorce daily and is determined to see students fail..This is coming from an A student.
The worst teacher ever! She can be described as sweet on the outside and evil in the inside. I am a Nursing and several people advised me not to take Micro at CPCC. I have a 4.0 GPA and I assumed those students did not have the same study ethics as me. Don't bother calling the dept or completing the student surveys they don't care.
RUN FAR AWAY!!!!!!! I have two degrees and am trying to get into a masters Physican Assistant program, I have a 3.5 in all science classes. THis teacher is by far the worst teach I have ever had in my whole carrer, and thats going back to kindergarden!!! THe lab is unorganized and tests confusing and meant to trick you. RUN AWAY!!!!
This class has taught me even the smartest people can be malicious idiots. There are teachers that care about the students learning, then there are teachers like Spring who want to take a lifetime of failures out on anyone that pays for the class. I can see why other schools in the area advise students to take micro anywhere but CPCC.Listen to them
This was the hardest class I have ever taken. I had to study a lot and managed to do well. It is also a very interesting class. Lisa knows her stuff and teaches you only what is important. I liked her!
Teacher seems to have a chip on her shoulder. Uses useless grading policies on exams that have nothing to do with if you know the material or not!
Hard Hard Hard class, study so much and nothing comes of it.
How is it feel like she knew students don't like her and she accidently face them in public place? I bet she uses to it. It would be horible when you have to stay inside the house to avoid seeing students that ignore your present or don't value you like you think. I hope one day she understand people as much as she understand the microbes.
This class is an absolute JOKE. Appx 5-10 pages of notes each test. You study your ass off and nothing comes from it. This is my second time taking it and now I'm looking at a C, if worse. Do not take it at CPCC. grrrrrrrrr
Do this, do that.... I feel like Cindrella and the instructor is the stepmother.I don't get anything out of it.I hope there's a real God Mother with magic wand appear and she changes my grade to what I deserve.
Hard Hard Hard. We all try so hard and it doesn't really pay off.
I just heard a classmate said that teacher goes to hell. What can I say? Hm, I don't want to go there with her though.
Tests are VERY hard, but it can be done! Study everything, every detail, and you will do fine. Lecture book is not overly useful; must have lab book.
*Intimidation, lack teaching method norm - drop 1-2 letter grades *Test tricky & picky *states open & helpful - NOT *questions: answered w questions *Her way or Hwy *On-line notes confusing & scrambled *On-line, Not use computer for learning *Very frustrating *Local Hospital nursing director - not recommend Spring
I am in nursing program here @ CP- she defintely has a rep for being "impossible" I thought she was a great, grade A instructor who really watered down alot of indepth info vs. if taken @a 4 yr Univ- she teaches like a 4 yr professor. She will not spoonfeed you-but will try her best to simplify- I took the time to ask q's& rewrote notes& study grp=B
Purposefully makes the course DIFFICULT. Most horrible teacher I've had in a looong time!!! Totally BIASED towards international students!!!
not a good teacher at all !!
This class is unnecessarily hard. Telling evening students that to pass, you must study 4 hrs daily(min.)is crazy. What about working, living and caring for your family. Like a fool I sumter 2-3hrs daily during the week & longer on weekends.I used my ipod to record the lecture notes and listen to them at work, lunch & breaks. I told myself I could
Contine from previous-I used my ipod to record the lecture notes and listen to them at work.Test one grade was just emailed to me and I failed. I realize the classes @ CPCC are cheaper than Queens,UNCC & JCSU. I will save my cash and go to one of them before I stress myself into a heart attack with this class. My advice-stay away from this lady.
I used my ipod to record the lecture notes and listen to them at work.Test one grade was just emailed to me and I failed. Stay away from this lady. no stroke for me
This is an online lecture/lab in class. I am still attending her class ONLY to get some sort of info to use when I re-take it. She would not allow me to sit in on her day time class so that I might obtain some understanding. She answers our questions with questions. Harsh test...impossible to get many questions correct.
Not a good teacher at all. She's very rude and VERY picky with her tests. I did well in all the other biologies except this one. DON'T TAKE HER!
To Mrs. Spring: From the comments on this page it's obvious you NEED to QUIT your job!! You are terrible and unwilling to help! It like evolution...some species/professors are just not meant to survive, so do everyone a favor and become extinct! ?(grin)?
I love this class! The people who struggle don't know how to study. The tests come straight from her lectures! Make outlines and if you aren't doing as well as you'd like ask her for help! She's very fair and makes the subject very interesting! This is college. You can't cram to pass her tests. Show up and study and you'll pass. Loved it!
Hardest class I have ever taken! Earning my 2nd bachelors. 1st one from a private university. Graduated with honors. She expects u to know the subject as in depth as she does, even if it is only the first exam, and yet she has taught this for how long? I will be taking this course somewhere else.
Do. Not. Bother. It is my strong opinion the this teacher is a poor, poor example of what a Professor should be seen as. Unhelpful, narrow minded, horrible grader (I got a B because of MY ability NOT her teaching), she was willing to do NOTHING but bare minimum in our class. Look else where, heed this comment!
Worst teacher I have ever had. Makes class ridiculously hard. Tells you on 1st day of class that you will not make an A. She is right. No one in our class even got a B. She answers questions with questions. She takes points off for spelling and for writing outside of her line on the test. So if you have bring handwriting..she will mark off points.
I am wondering when so smart why she is not teaching at UNCC where she graduated from?
She is a tough teacher, but she knows her stuff and she IS willing to help you if you are willing to ask questions. She will not give you the answers, you definitely have to work for the grade. An A can be done. I learned a lot from her. Just make sure you study! You can't just read her lectures, you need to make your own notes, outlines, etc.
If you cannot memorize 4-7 pages worth of lecture notes, do not expect to pass the class. Also memorize diagrams. If you write pass the line, then you will get points off.The multiple choice is tricky also. There is so much information, and she will not tell you what you need to know. Good Luck
I've been in college for 6 years. I have 100 credit hours under my belt. This is the most difficult class I've ever taken. You learn a lot in her class but prepare to get a C or worse even if you memorize notes verbatim. The thing that hurts students the most is not focusing on notes and diagrams. Know your stuff or you will fail the 1st exam.
I enjoyed the class but not the grade I recieved.
I hate that the few people who somehow got an A or a B in her class have the nerve to come on here and say Mrs. Spring is "a grade a professor", etc. It's not true. If someone gets an A on one of her tests it's either because A.) they studied 5 hours a day (which most of us didn't have time to do while working) or B.) they had prior knowledge
I thought she was great, an A can be done, just study the lectures, do all of the assignments, make diagrams and you'll do good. You do not have to study 5hrs a day as some of these posts say. Ask her for help, and you'll get it, if you make the effort you'll do well and enjoy the class.
...seriously...Lisa Spring herself must be posting the few positive comments listed on this site. Literally 2 (at most 3) people passed the class I attended. Yes, you'll learn a lot. Yes, perhaps you may even earn a low C. If you're lucky you may even end up with a B. But it would be based on luck as she arbitrarily decides to take off points.
Lisa Spring is not as horrible as everyone here says. She knows her stuff and if you study her notes really good then you will do fine in her class. I got an A in her class and did not spend 5 hours a day studying or have any prior knowledge. YOU actually have to study. You can't be lazy and think you can pass just by showing up. Don't be scared
Don't waste your time. It's impossible. This is coming from a healthcare professional. You will get the information you need from the class, but you will not get the grade you deserve for learning it.
I did the online course with lab 2x a week. I ended up retyping the lecture notes into an outline form, eliminating the extraneous information, which really helped. Unless you are a genius, you need to study really hard in this class to make the grade. The tests require thinking and not just guessing. I liked the teacher.
I am so highly disappointed in ever having participated in this class, I feel as though Lisa Springs is trying to prove she is smarter than everyone, instead of instilling knowledge in us. Many of her annoying quirks are her teaching style, such as answering a student's question with a question. Lisa is making this class almost impossible to get an
Unfortunately, I have to say that it has been THE worst class experience I've had--over the course of almost 60 credit hours. The material itself does present a challenge, but most (if not all) of the difficulty lies in dealing with the ridiculous nuances of the instructor. I managed an A, but it was not fun. Steer clear if at all possible!
She makes the material so hard, I didn't like the way she teaches. She knows her stuff but she makes super hard on the students to pass.
very hard teacher..lecture are fine but test are differently and tricky. overall avoid this instructor.
I do not recommend anybody take this class.
Ms. Spring is not a bad instructor at all. She is a great instructor and helps you whenever you need it. Her tests come exactly from her lecture notes (so read them). If you read the lecture notes and do the study guides she makes for you, then you should have no problem passing this class. I got an A bc I did my work(like a college student should)
She is tuff. You will need to study. You can do ok in this class if your not taking anything else. If you can get the other Micro teacher first. be warned your horizon of biology will be expanded, yet to a degree that is not useful come test time. she is trying to give perspective as well as knowledge. That line become blurred sometimes.
If you are a student working toward a degree in Health Care this is a good class to take to prepare you for future classes. She uses alot of critical thinking multiple choice questions on her test and requires students to bring their A game.
She is tough, but really knows the subject. Everyone complains, but it isnt really that tough. This isn't supposed to be an easy class, and most students are trying to become a nurse and just want to get through it. You cant do that here; you have to learn it. I would recommenced doing a crash course in BIO, if you have only done A+P. I like her.
I learned a ton from this class and enjoyed the material but the way she was teaching didnt go along with the way she tested us. many of us spent hours and hours studying and we thought we understood everything but when the test came around was as if she was setting us all up for failure. You can also tell she doesn't really care if you pass
This is a very hard class. You need to work very very hard. Her tests are 3-4 units each, multiple questions 40%, short answers 60%. Her tests are tricky and you need to memorize page to page from her lecture notes. You will need to spend at least 3 hours per day outside class for studying. Lab part is easy- its by another instructor.
I never felt to irritated with a professor. 4 exams. Each about 30-40 questions. Material is scattered between 3-4 printed notes 4-11 pages each. Adds strange, almost 'trick' questions. Can be very cynical. I enjoy micro, not at all the instructor. maybe 20-30% are passing, not with an A, but passing. Lab instructor is great (Danielle Jones)
Hard class.Great teacher. You have to study and listen to lecture. She is fair and her tests make you use critical thinking skills.I learned a ton in this class and can say I have a great foundation in micro thanks to her teaching and my efforts.Bottom line if you study, really study you will do fine.If you want to learn I wouldn't take from any other
Lab tests are a piece of cake, easy a. The lecture tests are extremely difficult. You have to study hard. And even if you know the material like the back of your hand, you still wont get an A because her tests don't test your knowledge, but tries to confuse and trick you. She sets you up to fail. I wish I had taken this class somewhere else.
very hard and confusing bad teacher terrible do NOT recommend her to any one worse teacher out there
worse teacher CPCC has. Do NOT take her. Very hard to pass her test they do not go with her reading guide.
The worst instructor ever. Made up example of one of her test questions: What are the symptoms of Staph. Toxic Shock Syndrome? A.fever, vomiting, rash B.diarrhea, vomiting, rash, hypotension C.hypotension, high fever, rash, diarrhea, vomiting D.A&B E.vomiting, high fever, rash F.rash, hypotension, diarrhea G.All of the above Confused? That's how she likes it.
If you care about your time and GPA, DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS!! The absolute worse experience I have had with any instructor at CPCC!! Very disappointed!
"Which of the following is family unit?" A) Mother & Father only B) Mother, Father, siblings if they all live together C) Mother, Grandmother, daughter D) B & C E) None of the above. (not a real example) Her questions are tricky enough to question your own family history. If you have ? you better bring diagrams, and your ? are answered with ?
this teacher is VERY hard. the material is interesting and fun to learn but when it comes to the test...she TWISTS the questions and that's when it gets frustrating...just when u thought ur ready for the test...think again!
Horrible experience with this instructor! just a disappointment. No reviews for tests, lecture notes are not clear at all, tricky questions on tests, all characteristics of a non caring instructor. Don't take this class!
Mrs. Spring is a good professor. She is passionate about teaching Microbiology and does a great job ensuring you know the material. Yet, her exams are mission impossible. I consider tricky, misleading and can confuse even the most studied. Most test points are on the critical thinking question. You will learn micro but won't pass test easily.
I had interest prior to taking this class. But all my interest went down after I started this class. Tricky tests, not helpful when you ask for explanation. In general I don't recommend this teacher for anyone taking microbiology. Her questions are not to measure the level of understanding of the student; they are made to trick students,
Very tricky and hard exams. Not that helpful on lecture discussion and materials. Very hard to pass her class generally .
This class required a lot of time & dedication. The material itself was not super hard, but time consuming to learn. I really enjoyed Ms. Spring's class-she was also the instructor for the in person lab. That was helpful so I could learn her teaching and testing style in person. You must study a lot for this class though. Be prepared.
Her exam questions are designed to trick you so no matter how many endless nights I studied and "thought" I was prepared, I failed. If your GPA is important to you or you actually want to learn something, don't take this professor. Your questions will be answered w/a question - never getting clarity. TOTAL FAIL
If you care about your GPA, do not take her class. Her lectures do not help with the exams, as they are filled with trick questions. If you ask a question, she answers w/a question - never getting clarity. I noticed half of my class dropped within a couple classes. Others said they hadn't passed any of her exams either so I wasn't the only one.
Test are tough with trick questions. Not an easy A course. Recommend taking this alone or with easier courses only. Had to memorize lectures for hours at home and downtime at work. Some students dropped. Don't buy the book. No matter how much I studied I ended up with all C's and 1 B on the test. That was frustrating! I made it and so can you.

This is the hardest class I have ever taken and I already have a bachelor of arts degree. This class is a weeder class. This class is designed for you to fail or not be successful. It doesn't matter how much you study you are going to do well. Her test questions are tricky. She will give you the right answers but there is a better and a best answer
A lot of students don't like her but its because she makes you work for your grade. She wants you to be able to apply what you learn in class to real life and when you are in the work field, not just be able to answer test questions. Quiz questions can be VERY tricky though. I've learned a lot from this class. Don't buy the book, not needed.
she makes the class very difficult
Too many right answers on all tests but only one she'll accept. That is the most frustrating part. The material is not hard but she makes it hard. I am not nor is a vast majority of the people taking this class, going into any sort of microbiology field and she teaches like we all are. Taking her class was the biggest mistake.
I would NOT recommend ANYONE to take her class. Tests extremely tough, does not clarify on things, and does not work with you! Tough teacher and if you are looking for a good grade, don't take her class!
I enjoy microbiology, but this course is hybrid with many quizzes and homework assignments online... The lectures are online for you to take notes from yourself, and class time is just answering any questions you have about the typed lecture. Tests are hard with many "right answers" but only one is correct. I would not recommend this class for you.
She is a great teacher because she will prepare you for the medical field. However, her test are very tricky. The reason why her test are hard, she is preparing you for grad school and/or entrance exam into a medical field. She will give you classwork and quizzes to help you prepare for test.
She will give you the grade you earned. She will give you extra credit, only if you put in the effort. If you do not put in the effort, you will fail.
She's very good actually. I actually wanted to take the class with her the second time because I realized half way through how I needed to study for her class. Here's a tip: find a partner who will help you study.
Very frustrating!
Nice women, but talks SOOO slow. She forgets what she is saying mid sentence A LOT. BioBeyond (the online part) SUCKS. The way it is graded is horrible and it causing my grade to suffer just because the program is new and still bad. She doesn't seem to care though. Her tests are alright if you study, but I would NOT recommend her class EVER.
No direction, no guidelines, wastes half of our class time going over PowerPoints she expects us to read outside of class..... soooo why go over them AGAIN? definitely regret not dropping this class.
HIGHLY suggest you consider taking this class alone if you are interested in doing well---and even at that, plan on spending every spare moment studying. Tests are VERY hard. She sends home a written lecture and based on that, you will take quizzes. Her quizzes are exceptionally tricky--you have to pick the "best" right answer. TOUGH INSTRUCTOR
Unless you are a genius, I would not take this professor again. She does a "quasi lecture" and gets really defensive when you try to ask questions. I would not recommend taking this class with a full load, it is very time consuming.
i just started taking her class this spring and i already don't like her teaching method... from the hand outs, honestly is not hard. but she make it so damn impossible. and she's the only professor :(. im not happy.
Her exams are pure memorization- does not teach- yet manageable. I just re-wrote my notes over and over again. This course is a wake-up call for transfer students. If you cannot pass her class... then goodluck in college. I took her class and SIX other classes while also at UNC Charlotte and did very well. Just study, take notes, and ask questions.
By far the worst I've taken in college. The lectures are all typed for you, but it is never clear. She ask questions within the lecture, but do not give you the resources to answer the question. Test are VERY confusing, with multiple right answers, but you have to choose the BEST right answer. Unless you have a lot of time on your hands, don't take
What do I have to say about Lisa spring, well she is very detail oriented, she makes you think out of the box, you'll have a new way of thinking by the time you finish her class, and if you don't you probably didn't pass. She is very sweet but serious. Study hard and take plenty of note, asks every question your inclined to, take this class seriou
Very tough class. In order to be successful use only lecture material given. Study, study study. Use discussion board often for questions. Go see her for help. She is a tough grader but rewards you for effort. Don't give up. Stick with it!!
I have only been in this class for a month but I already hate it. Spring's typed lectures are probably the worst I've ever seen. They are threadbare and confusing, not to mention very poorly structured. She expects you to answer difficult questions using her threadbare lecture and then slams you in her grading. I am not enjoying this class.
Would not recommended anyone to take Professor Spring for microbiology. The test that previous students have already commented on is accurate. Her tests have multiple correct answers making the tests confusing. I've had tough professors before, but atleast their test were clearly constructed. CPCC needs a Professor that wants students to excel.
She's very good at teaching and because she is good, she gives difficult tests. One of few professors who actually makes you to think and use your brain. I don't get all this whining. How you want to succeed without studying? OMG, I had to read a book and doHW Did anybody study in Europe? She's a piece of cake compare to those professors!!!
Lectures are not very clear. Professor says she doesn't want to give you the answers,I agree. But having to decode lectures to me is not a great way to learn if your there to learn the material. Quizzes are very tricky! Homework is hard to do if you don't understand lecture.
Not accesssible-harsh grader, doesnt provide helpful feedback. Very specific with what she wants and it doesnt make sense. work doesnt match the lab lecture. Overall a giant mess. Dont take this class.
Lisa Spring was the worst teacher I have ever had. She is extremely picky with her grading, and wants things "her way, or no way." DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HER. I have never been more emotionally and mentally drained/stressed from a semester and I pray no one has to go through this.
She gives horrible lecture handouts that you have to decode to understand what she means. If it's not her way it's wrong. Don't take this class!!
I found Ms. Spring's lecture materials to be very helpful. They're short and most of the information you need is in there. However, you need to supplement these documents with info from her lectures. She will test from both. I also thought she was very funny and made the lectures interesting and engaging. I thought she was a very easy grader too.
The lecture is impossible she gets a lot of dates mixed up for quizes, her hw takes a long time to do and does not give you material to make a good grade, the lecture notes are not clear at all. She would not take my assigment even after I explained I turned in wrong doc way before due. She knows the material but not for the student. Study alot!
Worst testing ever. The questions should not be a quiz themselves. There is a reason half the class dropped this course. I shouldve done it myself, but had to stick with it due to financial aid. Wont take any of her classes.
I found the class to be very watered down, while simultaneously very picky with no learning purpose. She doesnt push students to think critically, but rather memorize meaningless information that you will forget after taking her exam. I think she had a hard time understanding difficult topics herself, which made her a poor teacher.
She thinks youre taking her class only, a lot of assignments and there was an assignment that would not help for nothing and she always ask us to do it ( fill in the blanks ) many time she gives bad grades with no comments so you dont know why. Not comprehensive and picky with correction.
She is detail-oriented but not standardized so you waste a lot of time trying to interpret her formatting and questions. Her terminology doesnt match standardized biological terms or processes. Only label what she asks in the way she asks. Confusing instructions. Lectures are basic with no learning structure. Being smart wont help.
For someone who struggles in science, don't take this class online and be in the classroom instead. This way you could ask questions as you write notes. She's a tough grader but she does give feedback on questions that are incorrect. And if you do take this online, READ READ READ READ the lecture notes given and the intructions on the assignments.
This was by far the worst class and professor I've EVER had. Ms Spring was a nice woman Im sure but as an instructor? Nope. The lecture notes are what she came up with-there is no need to purchase a book because selecting an answer from the book will be marked wrong with only "feedback" and NEVER what the actual answer is so that you know for ref.
The class isnt too difficult, but it took a LOT of effort. Make sure to READ the lecture notes if you take it online! There was a LOT of it. The homework was pretty straightforward and so were the quizzes. Shes a tough grader, but gives great feedback! And responds of emails pretty quickly!
I didnt have her as a main teacher but she was the one that would grade homework online. Sometimes I felt like she would grade me unfairly. Make sure you do your homework on time and always be prepared and study. Exams are based on what you have learned and a lot of examples are them the text book!! I got a B
Her labs/tests were fine. Her lectures were HORRIBLE and these comments are right. She gives you 6 correct answers but wants you to pick the, best one. I agree 100% with the negative comments. Her lectures are confusing and the tests are even worse. She sets you up to fail. She refuses to give you a direct answer. Awful experience.
I wish I would have checked this site before taking this class. Her labs and lab tests I had no problem with. Her lectures are awful. You study the written lecture homework and the quizzes and then you have 60 questions on the exam that are so confusing and have multiple right answers. Too many trick questions and answers questions with questions.
If you think shell be a easy-going and lenient professor; you thought wrong. No matter the circumstances, shell always go by the book. There is no extra credit, help, or leeway when it comes to passing her class. I 100% agree with all the other comments.
If you are looking for a class to really grasp the basics, this is not it. I took this course and have 2 Bachelors, and it was the most time consuming i've taken. You can study for hours, but you still have to decode the test and lectures. She is a nice lady and does know her stuff, but has a 1 student gets it, all students get it teaching style.
The professor definitely knows her stuff! Very helpful in relating with the real world and the medical field. Unfortunately, her exams are very confusing and misleading. Second time taking Micro and got a better grade at a UNIVERSITY. She should teach at a University instead of a Community college, since most students are retaking for prereq's.
this class is graded primarily on the lecture tests you take, the lecture tests that count for more than half your grade and are extremely specific. you'll get multiple correct/potentially correct answers but have to pick the best one. I genuinely thought I wasn't gonna pass this class but somehow I barely made a B.
She is the best teacher very intelligent and genius teacher. The coursework is clear. You have to work hard and spend more time. She is so kind and willful to help her students. She is so sweet I will recommend everyone to take the class with her. Thank you.
The most humbling class I have ever taken. The tests are incredibly long, with difficult answers, and make up the majority of your grade. Get a bad grade on two or more tests and you're basically done for.
