A very good teacher. She is easygoing and has a very good sense of humour. She also makes classtime amusing and fun. A little harsh marker, but she makes it up with excellent explanations and willingness to help students that desire extra help.
Livia seems like a very nice person, unfortunately I have learned close to nothing in her classes. When I sit down to write an assignment I have no idea how to do it and have to resort to Google and the textbook. I feel like if I am paying for a class I should be learning something. She's also a hard markers and will get all huffy if you're late.
She is a harsh marker and makes you write perfect essays in 50 minutes
She is really hard teacher.
Honestly, it was a very fun and engaging class. She is super enthusiastic and willing to help if you ask her. When explaining topics, she needs a little bit more clarity and detail. She is a slightly harder marker, but you really have to put in some effort if you expect to get at least a decent mark. Overall, she is a wonderful and kind person.
Whatever mark you get on your first two assignments will be the same mark you get throughout the course, whether it be a C or a B+.
Very nice teacher and has great stories. However, assignments are impractical and unclear. She expects a high level of writing for an introductory course that does little to prepare you. In-class exercises are useful, but not very effective use of time. Overall, I would NOT recommend taking CMNS with her.
I'd say her class is not organized. She spent about 90% of class time for discussion and novel analysis, and gave us little information about writing. Therefore, I had almost no chance to improve my writing during the semester. If you want to learn writing, I don't recommend her. If you just need an easy C+, she might be one of your choices.
Livia is a harsh markers. She expects a high level of writing in minimal deadline(60 min). I wouldn't recommend her if you need some guidance in writing english.
She is barely a good teacher but a good marker and a good person. If you are looking to learn, she is not the best choice but if you want to pass this course to take ENGL 1127 or similar I definitely recommend her. I rarely attend the class but I got a pass mark only with my final exam.
She is a very helpful and nice teacher. She's very easy. Talk to her often and you will get a good grade.
Livia took the fear away for me, she wanted me to pass. I recommend her as a prof
Livia is definitely a nice instructor and an easy marker, explains grammar clearly with some sort of senses of humour. However honestly I didn't learn much from this course (I guess this is not her fault, this 1107 is simply like some sort of reviewing). Recommend.
Livia is the best!
Excellent teacher, Very helpful and very kind.
Her online class has been fun. I'd give her A's in all aspects. Love her!
Livia is the most kind and helpful person. I am by no means a strong writer but she pushed me to do my best. She is engaging and goes above and beyond for her students. Would highly recommend her. (She is a fair marker)
This was a great course for me. I did better than I expected in the beginning after being out of school for many years, mostly because Livia was willing to meet or email after class hours for clarification. I'm not sure the method here for scoring the profs on this site does them any justice. For instance, #4 "Easiness", the class shouldn't be easy
Livia is great! Super fun and silly, and will go off on tangents sometimes, which makes the class interesting. Take advantage of office hours, she really helps you out if you go to her. Lots of class discussion, not a whole lot of actual lecturing and very little on grammar. She's a fair - easy marker.
whatever u get on first 2 assignments or quizzes is your mark the entire term. i would recommend u choose sum1 else.
her class is not organized. She spent about 90% of class time for discussion and novel analysis, and gave us little information about writing. I had almost no chance to improve my writing during the semester. If you want to learn writing, I don't recommend her. If you just need an easy C+, she might be one of your choices.
She's the best!
Trust me. Sacrafice your schedule to take this class with a 'good' teacher.
wt u get on first assignment is your mark the rest of the course. doesnt matter how much you improve. take with someone else. GPA DOWNER!!!!!!!!!!
She is an okay teacher. She does give feedback on your essays, I would definitely use her office hours or even after class to ask her about the errors you made. If something is unclear i recommend you point that out to her otherwise, you won't get it. Mainly just focused on essay writing and grammar. In other words she is very nice and approachable
horrible. Take this course with someone else. Her boring classes will make you fail the course
I'm sorry Livia, but I cannot write a perfect essay in 50 minutes...
Really nice teacher, assigns a short story to read most classes, need to of read the stories to pass. No tests, about 5 writing assignments the entire term. Fair marker.
If English is your second language you wont pass her course.
Livia was a fantastic teacher, especially for first thing in the morning. She is always positive and gives great feedback. Definitely would take her again as she is fair in marking and very organized.
Livia is a nice person, however the way she grades papers is ridiculous. Nobody seems to improve. What you get on the first paper you either get the rest of your papers or you do worse. She also doesn't give good feedback and if you do follow it you still don't improve.
GPA Downer.
Livia is an excellent prof with a deep understanding of her discipline. However, since she is also very nice and approachable, I believe many students think they will get a good grade just for showing up. If you're prepared to learn, you'll do well. Take advantage of her office hours as that is the best way to get feedback and improve your writing.
avoid
Livia is a good teacher and her feedback is very insightful. Generally, instructions were clear but not as straight forward as other online courses I've taken. Two online group projects. Need to work hard at this course for a good mark.
I thought Livia was great! A little quirky but always full of energy. I really liked the way the class was structured: .her classes focused on the mechanics of good writing and what makes a good essay, instead of spoon-feeding us ideas. Very valuable class, especially if you want to improve your English writing skills. Highly recommended.
The way she marks is just ridiculous, doesn't matter how much you improved over the course, the first assignment's grade pretty much defines your overall grade. Just lame. Definitely a GPA downer, avoid at all cost.
Livia is so sweet!! She cares a lot about her students. Her lectures are really boring though, that was one aspect I did not like her about. She does save 10% for attendance/participation though, so show up and you will easily get 100%. English is not my strongest subject but I still maintained a b-/b on all assignments.
I took Livia's class 2 semesters ago and I'm thankful for everything she taught. She's the sweetest, most understanding instructor, and he classes aren't heavy. Just keep up with the readings, participate in class discussions and you'll do fine. Her essay assignments aren't challenging either. Just talk to her if you need help, she's super nice.
the worst teacher i have ever taken. avoid!!!!!!!!
Livia is a nice person but I felt like her lectures were really boring. There was a lot of group discussions that didn't feel too helpful since nobody really understood much of what we were supposed to be discussing about. She also seems to grade tougher than previous english instructors I've had.
Attendance does help in this class since most of it is based on class discussion, it'll help you with ideas when it's time to write I don't know why she has such bad reviews, she really is great! so caring and understanding, I think taking notes on what was said during class discussion and studying those before tests helps immensely in this class
No matter how hard you try, your grade never improves. Going to her office hours will not help you improve your grade. Seems like she grades every paper differently. AVOID!!
She does not grade according to the assignment outlines. Avoid!!!!
Not sure why everyone has such negative things to say about Livia! I found her to be a very caring prof who always thoroughly explains the criteria and gives good feedback on how to improve. The class is mainly in class group discussions as well as a couple "in class essay". Usually a B- student in english and has been getting A's
Livia is a nice and caring professor that is willing to talk to her students. Livia's lectures are mostly group and class discussions. Be prepared to be placed in a random group to discuss with other people. Livia marks essay's quite tough so be prepared to get help from the writing center and have people proof read your essays!
Pros: easygoing/funny personality, puts up main PowerPoint slides on D2L, gives helpful input/strategies. Cons: A LOT of group discussions (1-2 per class), 10% is attendance & participation, Writing Essays textbook useless. Other: 5% paragraph, 25% inclass&revision, 20% comparative, 20% research and 20% final, 11 stories, DO NOT TAKE 1 HR CLASS
English is not my first language but she helped me whenever I faced any trouble. She's a tough grader but ready to help you out if you are ready to help yourself. I would definitely recommend her to those whose first language is not English. She's a really nice person.
Livia is really a great instructor. She has a great method for teaching. She makes her lecture more clear and easy to understand. She is smart and gives a great feedback. She also encourages students for studying and no boring with her lectures. Overall, if I were to take any English course, it definitely will be with her. Wish her all the best.
She is a very nice and generous presence to have as a teacher. However, I found her teaching style of getting the class in discussion groups every 5 minutes extremely tedious and a waste of time. She seemed to lack confidence in her lectures and just in general. Her grading is fair. There were 3 short essays and I found her comments helpful.
Livia is hands down one of my favourite profs. Took her twice, for 1127 and Advanced CMNS 2228, My marks always were around 70%. Super approachable, usually at the writing centre. Show up at her office hours and she'll find time for you. She's funny, nerdy in a cool way, overall a pleasure to learn from. Recommend her 100%
She is a really tough marker. I always went to see her at her office hours always seemed like her feedback was positive & that I would get a good mark on the essays but nope, still got mediocre grades, spent tons of hours writing essays only to get a ok mark. Gave me a above average participation even tho I showed up to class n saw her a lot
Livia is a great professor! She is caring person and super cute. Her lectures can be a little dry but she trows very corky and funny spin-offs to the topics. I used to always hate communications and english courses, but she makes the class so much better! Also, make sure to attend all the classes as she takes attendance!
She is very bubbly and brightens up a room the moment she enters! I hope i have her in the future as a prof!
Get ready to read a lot and spend hours online. She is a very tough grader with very high expectations from first year students. Exercises are not useful for the exams. I dont recommend her course. In general, shes a nice person and she always finds time to talk and answer questions.
She has a lot of homework stacked every week from essays to quizzes per week covering the lesson she teaches. she is very accessible outside of class. However, with all the homework she has given, she marks fair hard and picks on grammar but on the bright side if you mess up one assignment you have many to make up for it
ratings on here made me worried to take her, but she ended up being one of the best teachers I've had. dont expect the easiest class, although Livia completely understands that not everyone likes english. She is very empathetic during long lectures, super approachable. go to her office hours. Lots of class discussions, but i got used to it.
She's super approachable, which makes her such a good English teacher. I really enjoyed the short stories that she gave us during the course since its moral lessons are so relatable to self-growth and self-identity. She's a tough grader but ALWAYS ask for feedback!
Never take a online class.
I love Livia! I think she's one of the most approachable professors in the english department. But yes, she is kind of a hard marker but she does understand that not everyone likes english, you just gotta go to her office hours for help. The class engagement also makes/breaks how fun english class is so can't blame her for poor class discussions.
Just wanna say four words ' Don't take her ever '. I mean it.
Livia is a great professor as she is very approachable and replies quickly to emails! English has not been easy for me throughout high school but I actually feel like my writing abilities/skills have improved! There are many stories to read and essays to write, but she makes it more manageable by having group discussions 2-4x per week.
I had a very memorable time with her as the instructor! She was funny, engaging, witty, and gives great feedback when you approach her after class. Class engagement is a must though -- the lectures are usually used as a brainstorming activity for your essay-writing and your classmates can be really inspiring sometimes. Would absolutely take again!
Livia is very easy to approach, however, she is the harshest marker I have ever met. Simple grammar mistakes will take you down a letter grade. In addition, she will nitpick every little part of your papers, if a sentence could VAUGELY be misinterpreted, she will mark you down. I am a native English speaker and I struggled. Don't take her.
w/ covid and online school, she's been very understanding! She truly helps if your stuck on something so reach out to her if you need to! She gave MORE than enough time for timed assignments and the final (which was open for like 30 hours). Lecture videos are short and clear. Fair marker but you have to work for it (shes a bit tough on grammar).
Livia is bubbly, sweet, and wants to see her students succeed. She is approachable and gives good feedback on all assignments+discussions. If you are motivated to improve, she will help you along your journey! She assigns interesting topics (we did a unit on video games), has fair marking criteria, and provides clear examples to model expectations.
Livia's a friendly instructor, but a bit of a tough marker as you will most likely get the same grade throughout the course.
Livia is super nice and easy to talk to and always willing to help. I found that because the class was mainly discussion, what she expected in your writing was skimmed over very quickly, but she does give clear feedback to help you improve She is a hard marker and it is easy to lose lots of marks due to smaller mistakes.
Her lectures are confusing. She's a hard marker. Do not take her clased, I repeat! Do not take her class
Livia is so nice, if you ask for help she won't judge and is willing to help as much as possible. However, she is such a strict marker, you'll likely get the same marks for each Essay you write.
Unnecessarily tough grader, not sure why she expects perfection from a first year class. The final exam had useless trivia on it, completely irrelevant to our learning in the course. I would absolutely recommend avoiding this instructor if you have to take ENGL 1129 or 1130. I put a lot of effort into this class and it did not reflect in my grade.
Her lectures and instructions are very confusing. Every week's discussion is split into a different group with many instructions to read and still unsure what is going on. Her lectures are useless, and I don't feel I learned anything from her class. Don't take her class if you expect better grades. I had a better English teacher last semester.
She is a very friendly prof who is always willing to help. That being said, a lot of the time spent in class I find to be relatively unhelpful. Additionally material was usually only marked and returned just before the next paper or sometimes after the next paper, not giving students a chance to learn from her critiques on past papers.
-Very enthusiastic and outgoing professor -Plenty of take home readings -Make use of her sample essays to frame your own work -Make sure to participate whenever you can -Great feedback, always straight to point out the good and the bad parts of your work -Be prepared to interact with peers and collaborate (group work is frequent in her class)
I have taken an English class with Livia a few years back while I was working toward a university transfer. Now that I am in my final year at UBC I still sometimes think about the stories we wrote about and the discussions we had in class. The stories that we analyzed were great and their meaning really stayed with me. Highly recommend!
I think Livia is very enthusiastic, understanding and nice prof but I feel she was a hard marker even if I would get multiple copies to proofread from her she would only tell you a couple of them and then the mistakes she never pointed out would be pointed out while grading it. Use her essays as a framework to write your own and participate a lot!
There is lots of reading in her class. Tough grader. When she give lectures, it is not clear what she wants from you! Your English won't Improve. Exams are insane. For your own sanity avoid taking this class with her. You're welcome.
Confusing lectures. It is not clear what she wants from you. After grading an essay she writes a review to "improve", even if you follow what the review says your essay grade won get better. Take the course with another teacher. Thanks
Most of the time spent on lecture won't help with your writing, it only helps with generating ideas. Don't expect to improve a lot on your writing. Also, her notes makes things more confusing and complicated to understand.
Don't get me wrong she is a nice person, with a very good personality. But, she is a very hard marker. Very, very hard.
Livia is a very thoughtful professor with a fun/approchable personality. It's clear she wants students to understand the concepts and ideas being taught in class. I see other reviews mention "tough marker" and I agreed at first but after utilizing her office hours and listening to her feedback my writing improved and so did my grade.
Lot's of reading in her class, didn't use the textbook once, the lectures are very unclear and instructions for papers and assignments are not clear and confuse you even more. Beware of pop quizes. Would not take again
Livia is nice, she's very knowledgeable too, however she's a tough grader. The lectures are fun though because she's very passionate and caring. She's a nice person but not a great teacher.
