she's the BEST!!!!!
The best teacher I've had
She's awesome :-)
She's so nice, and before she was pregnant, she was so hot! Nicest woman around. This lab was very helpful and really introduces you to advanced cellular techniques! Well done!
Awesome class! Interesting information presented clearly and thoroughly. Dr. Allison is a really great professor... knowledgeable and so nice!
She has been my advisor and I've done research with her because I was so comfortable with her. She is very helpful and approachable. Sh ehas helped me so much!
very cool. i worked in her lab also. i hope her cat wallace is well.
She is great...one of the nicest people...and great at explaining things. Definitely take her class...you won't regret it.
I took Molecular Genetics from her during the first semester she arrived at W&M. I am now finishing up my PhD in this area of study and owe a lot of my inspiration to her. Thanks Liz!!! Keep on inspiring...
Allison is a great professor. She really loves genetics and is incredibly knowledgeable - she wrote the book for the class, which is all recommended reading that completely mirrors the lecture material. She gives study guides for the exams, and all exam questions are drawn straight from the guide. You have to write one easy 6 page review article
I don't like genetics. I find it more difficult than other topics in biology. However, Prof Allison made genetics rather tolerable, even slightly enjoyable. Shes very helpful, very personable. The paper is incredibly easy, especially if you are used to the grading policies of the likes of Prof Sher. Tests are not too bad, but def not an easy A.
I had no interest in genetics and found much of the material very detailed. I did well enough just memorizing the review questions but don't recommend the class unless you are in a lab or are really interested in it. To really understand the questions it takes a lot of work. One of the hardest classes i've ever taken.
I love Prof. Allison. She has an amazingly in depth knowledge about genetics, and plenty of enthusiasm about sharing all that she knows. The material is not easy-it's very detailed and can take a while to wrap your mind around all the info. However, she provides review questions before all exams and has extra office hours to ask questions.
Great professor!! fun, interesting, enthusiastic, clear, and very willing to help. Loved this class! Be sure to attend the lectures, she'll cover all of the test info...And study old tests for the final, they're not identical but they're a good start.
Wonderful! Hard class for those without much bio, but sooo worth it. She is willing to help you if you ask and will try diff. ways of explaining things if you still don't get it. Even if I had failed the class (which I certainly did not) it would still have been worth it to take the class with Liz.
For me, the class was basically impossible, but I hadn't taken a bio class in four years. I loved the professor though!! She's so cool. Although I studied really hard, I did terribly in the class. Learned a lot. It was worth it.
She's an OK professor. Tests come straight from her PowerPoints. She does not use the text book much. Overall it's a pretty easy going class, but you still have to study to get an A. Also, she gives a good amount of extra credit to boost your grade.
Great class taught by one of WM's best teachers. She makes very complicated material much easier to deal with.
I am studying for her final right now. It is 2 AM and the night is nowhere near over. So basically, this is a tough course. She is a great teacher, and I knew almost nothing coming in and I have a B/B+. Every night before an exam I stay up until I know her study guide, and so far its worked. The paper is easy to get an A on though.
Her tests are super easy as long as you memorize every single thing on the powerpoints. Don't bother reading the book- waste of time. Overall, good teacher that makes getting an A very doable.
Great Professor, class is not too difficult just memorize everything on the powerpoints and the test will be a breeze. The teaching tool project is a free 50 points.
Textbook was never opened once; the material is all from the powerpoints, which she reads straight from and posts each online. She provides extra info in class that's not on the powerpoint, but very little is actually on the tests. The first test will be easy, but don't neglect studying for the other ones too
Fairly easy class. All exam material is directly from lecture. Prof Allison uses video and relevant examples to make lectures much more engaging and interesting.
if you like memorizing things from power points, that is the class for you.if you like a class where a professor helps you understand the mechanisms and relationships versus just memorizing, then you will not enjoy this class.she does not attend the review sessions, which was very disappointing.in class she reads from power points.boring lectures.
She is extremely nice. If you do not understand something or would like a more detailed explanation, she is extremely gentle and will explain/reexplain and help you until you understand. I had to really work hard in this class, but I felt it was very worth it. Lab is also fun with her.
great prof. you will love her a lot. go to class just because it's fun and interesting. i never went to office hours and never needed to, which is a good thing. take this class with her!! you dont really need the book, so don't buy it if you haven't!
Material was interesting, but presented in a boring manner. She is a nice professor, but reads directly from the powerpoints (which are outlines of the readings).
Allison is a pretty great professor. She really cares about the material and is quite articulate. Her lectures aren't that well organized, but it's pretty easy to piece the material together before the exam. The material is dry, but she does her best with it.
Allison is very nice but her class is deceptively difficult. The first test is much easier than the next ones, so don't get too comfortable. She is upfront about what will be on the tests, but you'll need to know it in a lot of detail. Reading the textbook is unnecessary; since she wrote it it is exactly like the lecture.
Awesome professor, but the material can get really dense. Very helpful if you go to her during office hours and ask tons of questions, especially when studying for tests. 2 tests, a paper, and a final.
Material is difficult; make sure to understand it on your own if you don't understand her teaching style. She posts study questions, but her test questions are different from them. She can be tricky. make sure to know material well and be able to explain it. Everyone in the class (and on reviews) loves her for some reason. Class is deceptively hard
Material is bland and memorization, but you can tell she really tries to make it easier to learn. Tests aren't bad but are very detail-oriented. Not the best class for "big-picture" and critical thinkers. Overall, not bad, but not exactly fun. I would still say take it!
Allison is very sweet and organized and just lovely all around. Her exams are tricky but fair. After Cristol's class I was afraid of ever taking bio again but she was so much better. I recommend this class.
Incredibly nice woman with a passion for biology. She challenges you to think like a biologist, not memorize, but apply the information she teaches you. Only used the textbook to reinforce the info she teaches, otherwise just look at the powerpoints. Tests were challenging, but look at MasteringBio because she reuses questions. Left with an A-.
Solid lecture professor with interesting anecdotes and a good sense of humor to make her class enjoyable. Not much creativity in teaching style. Entirely ppts and scantron exams. The class took a significant amount of work, but it was worth it. I'd recommend her as a professor.
This course is a cakewalk. It's the kind of class where you are guaranteed an A if you put in say 3 days of studying per midterm.
Dr. Allison is the head of the Bio department at W&M and is doing groundbreaking cancer research, yet still takes the time to teach an introductory course (and does so extremely well)! She cares about the material, but more importantly about her students. Not an easy class, but definitely doable (A-). Her lectures are clear and the tests are fair.
Liz Allison is the incredibly hardworking and dedicated head of the biology department, and I had the good fortune to have her for the second introductory biology course - I can't even express how grateful I am for that experience. Liz is a wonderful speaker and a knowledgable woman. I enjoyed her class very much. Go Liz!
Bro, bestest professor ever, nice, clear, helpful, just work and you will do fine. Amazing, a great person and teacher.
Professor Allison makes lectures very clear and straightforward. Lectures can become somewhat boring because she teaches straight from the book. However, she is a good lecturer and makes objectives clear for each test.
Professor Allison is super nice and helpful! Do not bother reading the book for this class - just come to class and pay attention. Easier than Cristol's class, but you'll still have to work for an A.
Professor Allison is beyond accessible! And she really does want to see you learn for the joy of learning lol, I was frightened after BIO 220 but determined, worked hard and got an A-, you can get an A in this class, just do the work to do so.
Professor Allison really cares about her students, even when she teaches large lecture classes. She believes in you as a student and wants you to do well. Putting the work into the class will serve you well, and you'll come out feeling like you really learned something. Exams may be tricky at first, but there are HW sets and a project to help.
My favorite thing about Professor Allison is that she is crystal clear about what material you will be tested on and what is supplementary. Her tests are very fair- study the blue thread textbook questions/chapter quizes! Despite it being a big lecture class, Allison really cares about each student and is available for help. 100% would recommend
She's really clear and responded to my emails really fast. Awesome professor!
Liz is one of the kindest and funniest professors I've had. Despite this being a large lecture class, she was very approachable and genuinely cared that each student got the support they needed. This definitely is not an easy class, but if you work hard and do well on homework, in class activities, and a project, you'll probably do fine.
Prof Allison was amazing. I loved this class, especially after coming from 220. Definitely easier to succeed and if you ever need help she is there for you. 2 Midterms, Final, Research Paper, HW
Professor Allison understands the student perspective. I want to be a bio major, so I was already interested in the topics presented, but her course went above and beyond what I had come in expecting. Would definitely take any other course Professor Allison teaches in a heartbeat!
Dr. Allison is great! Her tests are essentially drawn directly from the study guides, and she's always available outside of class to explain questions or look over your paper drafts.
Allison is a saint. She makes an intimidating subject something that is enjoyable and very reasonable. Lectures are interesting and have lots of real life examples. Allison wrote the textbook so she knows the material so well. So sweet in office hours. Would recommend doing the study questions she posts on Blackboard!
Dr. Allison is the best! She truly loves what she teaches, and she brings energy and enthusiasm to her lectures. The tests are hard, but with a lot of work, a good grade is possible. Plus she gives homework, group activities, and a project to boost your grade.
Many of my classmates agree that BIOL225 should have been easier than it was. Her powerpoints are extremely disorganized and she does not make her expectations clear for exams. Her test questions are often very vague, and she seems nice until she grades your exam. She's really enthusiastic about the material and cares a lot, but not the best.
I thought Allison was very nice and clear in lecture, but the tests were pretty detailed and she was a hard grader. I would 100% recommend reading the textbook for this class. Read every chapter that she goes over and make sure you can draw processes and explain things well. 2 tests, Research Box, HW, and Final exam.
Love her! Clear + fun lectures, everything straight from the powerpoint + lectures or textbook. Lots of material, but it's manageable. Not all memorization though: you have to think but if you pay attention, take notes, read the text, and basically follow what's going on there then you will get an A if you put that work in. She cares about you
Prof. Allison is a good lecturer and her expectations for the course were clear. I had basically no background in the subject before but I found her class accessible and her tests and assignments more than fair. It really isn't hard as long as you read the book and she give you feedback on your final project before its submission.
Dr. Allison honestly restored my faith in the biology department at W&M. I'm pretty sure I'm going to get an A. The tests are fair overall and if you review notes/read the textbook for overview, you will be fine, especially if you took AP bio beforehand. Allison's lectures helped me understand concepts that always confused me before. She's awesome.
i never really learned much from lecture because most of what's on the test is from the textbook. if i never went to class and just read the book instead id probably end up with the same or a better grade. dr allison is a really nice and helpful woman, she just lectured like we were 3rd year bio majors so it was confusing. definitely read the book
Dr. Allison is an amazing professor. She wants you to succeed!
Liz Allison is an absolute sweetheart and I loved being in her class. She's a fair grader and gives good feedback on your work. Material is interesting and her expectations of what you need to know are always made clear. If you pay attention in lectures you'll be set for the tests, not a difficult class.
Professor Allison is great! After my bad experience in BIO 220 I was kind of leery about 225, but besides the content being quite extensive, Prof. Allison teaches it well. She jokes with us, doesn't take herself too seriously, is willing to give you feedback and answer all your questions. Would highly recommend!
Professor Allison is a wonderful teacher and really wants each student to do well. On the first day of class she told us that if we ever need help, she'll always try to help us and that in her 20 years of teaching, she's never been too busy to help a student. Truly inspirational.
Dr Allison co-teaches with Dr Habersham and Dr Hinton. The class isn't a walk in the park, but not as terrible as people make it out to be as long as you show up to class. All 3 professors go out of their way to be accessible. The textbook readings take a long time, but the lecture content is more important.
She's so nice and sweet and really wants everyone to succeed! She explains everything very well and is super open to questions and helping students outside of class.
Professor Allison is a kind-hearted lady and is always down to teach you anything about biology at any time. She is accessible outside of class. But one thing that I didn't like about her class was that her lectures were useless, and when more than 150 people failed the exam, she didn't apply any sort of curve and instead she blamed it on us.
Dr. Allison is great and I wish I had used her resources more this semester. Definitely a worthwhile class and professor. She's one of the authors of the textbook we used in class which seems shady, but honestly was reassuring. She knows the material like the back of her hand and is extremely careful to explain things in a way that makes sense.
Explained everything in a clear, understanding way. Shes very approachable and keeps lectures fun. As long as you read and study it is manageable.
I could not have asked for a better Biology professor to start off my time here. If any other professor taught the first biology class, I probably would've switched majors right then and there. She responds to emails quickly, gives us tips on how to succeed, allows makeups and gives extensions when we need it. She's just the best that's on periodt
In general, I liked Professor Allison. I had to work really hard because the tests are super difficult, and it is hard to get your grade up because of how the points are divided. She is clear in how she teaches, and you can tell she genuinely cares for her students and the material. Her tests are not always straightforward, but it is not the worst.
Test questions are worded oddly and can be tricky. Definitely read the textbook because she wrote it. Pulls test questions from the book & mastering bio hw. The extra credit offered after the 2nd midterm definitely saved my grade. Go to her office hours!! She is happy to help. Definitely had to put work into this class, but it paid off.
I took Intro Bio with Allison and this class was so hard. I spent hours upon hours studying to only produce relatively average results. I love Dr. Allison but the class was really disorganized and the exams were really hard.
Alison is a good professor. She is incredibly knowledge and can definitely explain complex concepts in relatively simple ways. Exams were difficult but not impossible.
I didn't enjoy this class. I learned a lot, but that came with a lot of stress. Allison was nice, but almost in a condescending way. After an exam when over half the class failed, she said she was disappointed & it was on us. She couldn't admit it was a bad test & refused to curve it or give a new test. She just rubbed me the wrong way.
I love Professor Allison. I took BIOL225 freshman year and I knew I had to take her again in the future. She is so kind and such a generous grader. There are 6 in-class group assignments (freebie points), three exams (based directly on the study guide she gives), and a term paper (turn in a draft she will edit, make the revisions, guaranteed A).
I wouldn't recommend this class as a first upper level bio class. It is very dense and deceivingly difficult. Dr. Allision is very cool and I love the personality she brings to lectures. The tests are all short answer - she's a fair grader but its a lot of information. Genetics is such an interesting and cool class but beware of the difficulty!
Best prof I have had all 3 years here, super knowledgable can answer any question about the material or anything related to it on the spot. If you do the study questions exams will be easy
Professor Allison is super kind, caring, and very passionate about the material in this class having written the textbook herself! The content was very interesting to learn. The class itself is made up of some group case studies, 3 exams, and a final paper. I did find her to be a little harsh when it came to grading exams, but still a great class!
Hard class, funny and kind professor. 3 exams, none cumulative, 6 case studies (easy points; saved my grade), and a term paper that was a pain to write. Posts study guides before exams, which are all free response. Do the study guides; the exams are based on them.
Prof. Allison is an amazing person and professor who is very passionate about the subject. She is very kind and great at presenting information, but it is also a tough subject so you'll need to study a lot. Being present at every lecture is helpful but not necessarily required since she does post the lecture slides.
Professor Allison was an amazing lecturer and professor. She really cares for her students and she is accessible outside of class. She is very patient and understanding as well. The exams were difficult but based off of the practice questions which she would answer in office hours. She can be a kind of harsh grader but she is empathetic.
Because she does not post lecture recordings it is important to attend class. The Quizzes which were open note and group were not bad. The exams were okay if you did the study guide she provided but also she would mark off for somewhat random things. Always over-write on the exam, she says you do not need a paragraph but that is not true!
Dr. Allison is very knowledgeable and a good lecturer if a little monotone. Don't skip lectures since they aren't recorded. Use the study guides and case studies to prepare for exams. They're not too difficult but its a lot for the time limit and she's a bit of a harsh grader. Very patient and understanding so reach out to her if you're struggling.
This class is hard at the beginning. She is a really hard grader with no rubric for why points get docked and exams are short answer. Class is not recorded and powerpoints have little words so all of the information you need is just from speaking. You need to read the book or record the lectures. But she is very nice and very very cool.
