best teacher ever!!!!!! I love Dr. Y!
Found her to be condescending and really boring. Not really sure why she is teaching because she doesn't seem to like it. I have changed my major due to hating every minute of this class though I did do well. I was very disappointed with the class.
As long as you stay on her good side, you should pass just fine. She kind of ignores the lab groups that get along really well, even when they have real questions. The Tests were a **** if I remember correctly.
Dr. Y is a good teacher, and she makes lab comfortable and fun. She has a good personality but you have to try hard to make an A or a B. If you are willing to work hard you should do well in her class.
she was fun and I thought she was a cutie in lab. she HATES cell phones tho and will kick you out of her classroom if one goes off!
This class is pretty hard, And Dr. Y is usually helpful.. But WEIRD. She like dances around and sings songs about her little HAPPY chromosomes. ...Umm.. OooooK. Overall a good experience but she has way too many pet peeves and like FREAKS out when you do something she doesn't like.
Dr Y is a good teacher. She kind of makes you feel like you are in K5 again, but some of the people in my class needed that kind of help. She is very helpful and loves what she does. Sometimes she is a little unclear, but if you ask questions, she is always enthusiastic in helping you out..
I had her for lab and she definitely has the interest and wants people to suceed. Very helpful and is willing to go the extra mile to be availabe to help you out.
She is an ok teacher but she mainly depends on you knowing everything from the powerpoints. She is easy if you have her for lab.
She doesn't help you too much with what your doing in lab so make sure you read the exp. ahead of time. But outside of that she's great. She gives you a free 100 on a lab so if you miss one it won't hurt you, but if you don't miss one this can raise your grade alot. She's eccentric but if you ask her for help she will.
Do not miss a class if you want an A. I missed one class and took two zeros, got a B. Talks down to the class, not one on one. More helpful outside of class. Most of my class did not seem to like her, I had no problem with her.
USELESS! Her tests are hard! She is really hard to follow with. Once she said she was sick and missed the day we had an exam. She had our class fill out a "cheat sheet" on an index card and collected them. When it came to the day of the test, WE NEVER GOT THEM! SHE MADE THE EXCUSE SHE WAS SICK BECAUSE SHE LOST OUR INDEX CARDS! RIDICULOUS!
USELESS! SHE SKIPS AROUND DURING THE POWER POINTS. HER CLASS IS VERY HARD. ITS LIKE YOU HAVE TO SACRIFIC AND ARM AND A LEG JUST TO GET AN A! STUDENTS BEWARE OF DR. Y!
This Prof. is terrible..You might as well take this course online. You will need to read the entire chapters before coming to class, otherwise you won't understand anything she is talking about as she does not explain anything. Simply goes over the power points. Not student friendly. Rude and sarcastic!
Really did not enjoy the class. I felt good going into the class only to be let down due to the quality of teaching. You miss one day and your trying to catch up all semester. Good luck if you plan on taking the course with Ms. Y
didnt teach, she only read over the powerpoint slides-which you have to print out online. read the book if you want to pass and dont waste time studing the slides. always study using the website she provides in class-thats where most of the test info comes from. very unclear teacher, i dont recomend, unless you want to get a b or c.
Not a teacher that tries to make difficult material easier to understand and never really had answers to any questions asked. She reads her powerpoints to the class and that's about it.
This subject is too difficult to try to learn on your own. Dr. Y gave no explanation, just read powerpoints. Her lectures wandered from topic to topic and I never knew what she considered priority for the exams. Beware of Dr. Y unless you have a strong Anatomy background going in!
Really great professor. I had her for lab and learned so, so much. I'm taking her for microbio this semester, because I like having a teacher who knows her stuff. There are two practical exams, and the rest of the time it's lab quizzes and reports. There were two major lab reports, but she pregrades them. Take her if you love biology!
DO NOT PICK THIS TEACHER IF YOU WANT A PASSING GRADE. She's horrible, she does not teach anything. SHe's reads off a powerpoint that has nothing to do with test. I would not recommend her at all.
I do not recommend her at all. She reads off the power point and only "explains" things in a way that only biology lovers could understand. She doesn't simplify anything for the rest of us and keeps us not having any idea of what's going on. You have to teach yourself everything because she definitely doesn't help at all.
I dont understand why so many people bash on ms Y. Shes a great teacher if you get to know her. Of course yes her tests are hella hard but your in COLLEGE anyway. If you study and ask questions there isnt really a reason why you shouldnt get an A. Plus shes pretty cute for an older woman :)
good teacher, you have to try in this class..tests are hard but like the last person said...its college. she makes sure u have to take this class the first day bc it is difficult.
her lab class can be pretty hard to keep up with unless you're a scientist to begin with. she doesn't give instructions very well and expects you to keep up with her. she also doesn't explain the material and how it relates to the lecture at all. smart teacher but doesn't expand unless you ask for extra help.
Dr.Y really knows her stuff, but this class is for COLLEGE students it is a req. that you read your material and study. If your looking for a class that resembles H.S this isnt the class for you. But if you're looking to learn about Biology then sign up. Willing to answer questions anytime just have to ask & is always avalible thru office or email
Dr.Y is a very nice professor and willing to help, but she is very hard to comprehend unless you are already very good at Biology. I struggled through her lecture. She teaches off of her powerpoints, but the test are from the book. If you are in her class, be prepared to work hard. I'd suggest another teacher if you are not a Biology major.
Tough teacher but if you try hard and ask questions you can pass. MasteringBio was really helpful in the class for the exams. Overall I liked this course.
You are better off studying out of the book prior to class. She is not a dynamic personality, despite the effort. Try to stay awake in class, cannot miss more than 3 classes, and only ask her questions after doing the mastering bio work. She knows her stuff. Just boring.
Very nice and willing to help. This is a college class so obviously shes not going to hold your hand but if you put in the time to do the study guides for each chapter then you will be just fine.
I took her my first college semester (fall09) and I wish someone had warned me. You have to work your butt of in her class. I failed the class and now I am retaking it with another instructer and I am making A's and B's. If you want to work your butt off for a good grade take her but if you have a full load and need more time I would not take her!
she was subbing for my class so i cant really tell you how hard her test were but by the way she taught my class, IMO, she was very tough.. she did explain things well but my geez she was useless in lab. she just ignored me while i asked her questions. also, she seemed very picky and controlling.
She is extremely knowledgeable about the material. This is a college class, not high school. She provides the material and is specific with what you need to learn. Never opened the book, browsed the power points and pulled out a B. If you're actually interested in the subject, she really is the perfect teacher for it.
I don't think this lady liked me. But I honestly thought she is a tough cookie and kudos for knowing her stuff, but for freshmans like me..it was quite a bumpy ride in her class. I wouldn't recommend this class for those who are the ones that asks plenty of questions. She expects you to know them.
STEER CLEAR OF this lady... If your looking to struggle the entire semester I def Recommend her... My GPA suffered because of her.
all she does is read the powerpoints . she speaks to the class as if you registered for the class as a scientist . when you ask a question or want an explanation she makes you feel stupid . she isn't clear on what the test material is . do not take this lady if you want a good grade .
I was a little disappointed by this teacher. She was eccentric in ways. I understand we are adults. I see people walk in to class late and she does not flinch. But if someone cracks their knuckle too loud on a cold day, she will single them out and make them the spotlight. I also witnessed Dr. Yelverton yanking a phone out of a girl's hand. I.. no.
She is tough but not unfair. If you really want to learn the material she is a great teacher. She obviously extremely smart. I had her for A&P I lecture only. I made A's on all my test's because I followed the provided study guides. I didn't feel like her tests were unfair or exorbitantly hard.
Dr. Y did a great job stepping in to teach our lab class for the second half of the semester. She was very professional, kind, and helpful to all students who needed her help. She also made the class fun. I would take her class again.
she is kind of difficult, but a very nice lady! Shes big on extra bonuses! Her tests are kind of difficult, but not unfair. She really knows her stuff. If you really want to learn take her. If you wanna just skim it and not do the work and study hard, shes not for you!
Dr. Y was a great microbiology teacher! She was extremely generous with extra credit assignments, and with bonus questions on the exams. You do need to study--this is college--but she provides study guides for each chapter.
I would definitely take Dr Yelverton for micro lab. She did a great job making sure the class was ready and able to identify the final unknown microbes, and she was extremely helpful with any problems or questions.
Dr.Y is one of the best teachers I've taken at PSC. She may teach hard classes, but she makes it interesting. You'll walk out of that class with way more knowledge than you walked in with. She even gives you study guides for the test, and so many bonus opportunities. If you arent a hard worker, she isnt the teacher for you. I loved her thou!
She teaches extremely fast and doesn't help you study at all. Her tests are extremely difficult because none of her study guides online actually cover the material on the test. She gives one day warning for tests and has no other grades. So if you bomb one test you are done. She is my least favorite teacher out of 12 classes I have taken so far.
Great instructor for people who care to learn.
Dr. Y is a very nice professor.. of course you need to study..duhh its college..she teaches science people, you cant wake up one morning and just take the test..studying is required..i took her for micro and anatomy in one semester.. and did fine..just grow up..go to class..listen to her..study and test..simple as that..
This is a very tough class. She tells you at the begining of the semester you wont need our textbook but you literally have to read the textbook if you even want to think about making a good grade. She reads right off her power points and nothing on her study guides is even on the test. She does give out bonus points which you need to pass the class
Very Difficult Teacher!I would recommend her to ANYONE! She gives you a study to follow, however the questions on the test are nothing from the study guide.WARNING!!! DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER.
Dr. Y is a great teacher and very helpful. I had her for Micro. she gives a lot of extra credit! The subject is a little challenging but you must read the book, use the free online practice tests, and take the tests in the book. I made all C's on my tests but with e.c I got a B in the class! SHE IS AWESOME!!
Dr. Y is great. Some of these comments i think are unfair. The class is NOT easy. But with the easy extra credit it's possible to bump up a letter grade at the end of the semester. She answers all questions, no matter how dumb, and is SUPER intelligent and makes the class fun! AND her labs are awesome! She's just a fun, quirky lady! So just study.
Very tough teacher, all her test were hard and no matter how much i memorized her powerpoints or read the book it didnt make a difference. She is a very hard grader and has little compassion towards her students. This class is crazy hard. DONT take her!!! You've been warned
I took her online class and while it was difficult it's up to you to stay on top of the assignments. I had a very positive experience with this professor. Anytime I had a question and emailed her she responded the same day with answers. Do the homework and study for the test and you'll do great!
I had Dr. Y for Applied Micro last Spring. She's a fun kinda quirky science geek and so very smart. Warning: this class is only for the Serious student. So study hard and Micro will be the most difficult class you'll ever love!
She is a very fair teacher. She provides fast feedback and responds to messages fast. She does not put up with excuses or bad behavior. She is just fair. You do your part, and she will do hers. I would take her again!
If you are going to take this class and want an "A", I suggest that you take this with another teacher. She gives you about 5 resources that you need to study from for each test and doesn't tell you which one to focus on. There are a bunch of opportunities for bouns points. However, if you take this class with her, YOU WILL NEED IT!
Yeah she is a hard teacher, but an awesome one! I really enjoyed this class. Yes, it was very challenging and I passed with the help of all of the extra credit she gave. You have to go to class and study, people who are mad that they had to work for their grade are just petty. Dr. Y is not a bad teacher, just nerdy, funny & to the point
A poor teacher and unfair. If you want to get an A, I will recommend you take class with another nice teacher.
Hardest class I've ever taken!!!
She is an EXTREMELY tough grader. Not lenient. She expects you to work VERY HARD & have complete dedication for your work. She doesn't accept any excuses or laziness. Dr. Y is vague and her materials are confusing. The tests are extremely hard and you would have to study your brains out to pass with a C.
This class is very hard so if you are looking to do the bare minimal and make an A then this is not the class for you. You really have study the material EVERYDAY and don't miss lecture. I enjoyed this class and would recommend taking Dr. Y if you really want to walk away having learned microbiology then this is the instructor for you.
Dr. Y's class is great! The MATERIAL is difficult, but if you're taking this class that means you're going into a medical program, so if this frustrates you then maybe you should pick a different major. She has lots of resources online and study guides to use. She's offers 30 points extra credit, and responds to questions quickly!
Dr. Y is a good instructor. She does lecture very long but her classes do require a lot of lecturing because they are pretty difficult. She is extremely nice and will help you in any way that she can. As long as you do your part as a student, she will do a good job at her part as a professor.
Dr. Y is a very interesting character. She cares about the subject but can be a little socially awkward. I had her for Microbiology Lab and it was a very fun class! I would recommend the lab with her and the lecture class with another teacher. Grading was specific so you know what you're getting into.
Dr. Y is very quirky & that helps make this difficult subject relate able to daily life. She offers 30 bonus points, AWESOME! Do the study guides & the online practice questions, they help ALOT. Lectures are long, its a difficult subject, but she wants you to succeed. I would def take her again, I passed lecture with a B+ and lab with an A!
I took Dr. Yelverton's 6 week summer class, and she made Microbiology so enjoyable and doable even with such a tight schedule. She is very smart, funny, and helpful. Her class is not hard if you pay attention and go over her power points and study questions. I took her for the lab too, and it was my favorite lab I have ever had. Take her class!!!
Good teacher. Her tests are tough, but do your homework and pay attention in lecture and you will do fine
Dr. Yelverton, horrible. Ive never gotten below a B in any class and I was failing her tests. Class powerpoints are talking points for her, not useful to u in anyway. Try to avoid her at all costs to save ur gpa. Teach yourself things out of textbook if anything. She's trying to prove her knowledge to us, not teach us. Don't do it people!! :(
Her lectures were always interesting but I feel like there was almost nothing that she lectured on that was on the test. You really had to work for it, read the textbook and do the suggested problems in the book. I didn't like that she skipped the chem part of the book altogether in lecture, and I missed almost every chem question on the test.
Dr. Y is an exceptional teacher with very detailed lectures. I took her online course. She made difficult subject matter very easy to the point where I never had to open my text book. I don't understand why others on here are saying she is very difficult. If you don't put in the effort, of course you're not going to get a good grade. Plenty of EC
I did not enjoy this class at all. I would not recommend her as a teacher due to the fact that many of her assignments aren't posted where they usually are, they are emailed. She also does not have many assignments, mostly exams and little filler grades to help your overall score. 0 of of 5.
Love Dr. Y! There is a quiz every class along with two practicals, so not many grades to depend on, so must study! She is a great teacher, gives plenty of bonus questions on quizzes and EC. She is hilarious! Spend the extra time in class to go over the dissected cats, they are crucial on the practicals. Her slides with thelab book are also crucial!
Took her online class. You have to work very very hard to get a good grade. Offers some extra credit, but the tests are very hard. Gives too much material to study for the final, doesnt tell you to focus on anything specific.
Lots of extra credit opportunity, seems to genuinely care about the success of her students. Answers e-mails and texts quickly. Is serious about assignments being on time, but this IS college! Lectures were long, but she encouraged student participation as well as some hands-on activities. Calls herself Sarge but she's really just a sweet lady!
I had Dr. Y for Microbiology. Given that we all have taken Anatomy and Physiology, she assumed that on the first day of class we already knew everything. Her test were very hard and material was pulled from 4-6 chapters at a time. She never gave you anything specific to study. The final review study sheet said "KNOW EVERY TERM AND DEFINITION"!!
Mostly a nice and caring lady, very lecture heavy and not very engaging. Hard class in itself to take, lectures didnt do very much to make it any easier, felt like I learned more by studying by myself at home. Offers up to 30 points extra credit, gives long list of learning objectives to study for tests that isnt useful and too much to absorb
I had Dr. Y during the Spring when Covid-19 forced us to move online in the middle of the semester. She was very accommodating to the changes and made sure we were able to finish our unknowns in an easy and accessible way.
Dr. Yelverton was a great professor for Applied Micro and its lab. Lecture was online but she clear with instructions on case studies and discussions. The tests were on the harder side but so do the readings and homework. She dropped the lowest test grade and counted the final exam twice if you did better on it, also gave extra credit.
Not really sure how to describe her teaching methods other than the class was an utterly huge disappointment for me. Would not recommend her if you are excited like me and were excited to take Microbio.
Dr. Y is a good teacher, and a smart lady. I took her for applied micro lab. All you have to do is show up to every lab (can miss a maximum of 2labs), pay attention and participate. I would recommend reading the power points online before coming to class. You're graded on virtual labs (homework), quizzes, and 2 final lab reports.
If you are not a serious student, you will probably not enjoy her classes. If you are serious, and enjoy learning, she is 10/10
Not sure of the bad reviews, but this prof. was amazing. The material is hard so if you're a slacker you're going to struggle. Offers immense amounts of extra credit and study resources. You have to study outside of the lecture or you will not pass. Do the smartbooks, they're exactly like the test and they're extra credit. No reason to fail.
I loved taking my lab with Dr. Y. Shes incredibly helpful and I wish I had taken her for my lecture class as well. I highly recommend her and I dont understand why she doesnt have a higher rating. The material is hard, but Dr. Y makes it interesting and fun. Highly recommend and I would take any class taught by her if I could.
Lectures were fast and covered at least two lessons a day plus extra reading outside of class to finish the. She scared me I barely failed with 69 then found out she passed me though!
Dr. Y is most definitely misunderstood. She enjoys making sarcastic jokes but never with malicious intent. Her lab is challenging but she is always willing to answer questions. Her lecture can get boring sometimes but was mostly interesting.
