I had this prof. for 'racial and cultural minorities' and loved it. she really knows what she's talking about and is so intelligent. i would recommend her to anyone interested in anthropology. if you show up for class and study you'll do fine.
She is smart, considerate and sincere professor who creates course materials for students' sake! She is the best professor I've learned from before and she has made me major anthropology and changed my life philosophy! Thank you!
Very thorough lectures. She covers the material well and provides any assistance needed. She also offers more than one option for a final assignment. Tests cover lectures; she doesn't emphasize reading material very much, rather as a supplement.
Very boring woman. She cares about the material and the students, but going to her class to listen to her talk gets to be very difficult to do. Tests are tough.
Was a little hard to understand but tried to make class interesting
I was an anthro major and she sucked. I had a partner for a project, I did most of the work, and I recieved a lower grade, because she had a personal problem with me.
I call her the Anthro-nazi.
she spent the first two weeks on her course outline i mean if you can't understand it then there is something wrong with you. Her class is boring, but she trys. Her tests are a little confusing, but if you study then you should do fine.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. heavy italian accent hard 2 understand, during "reviews" if you ask her a question she'll laugh, and say she can't go over the whole lecture... and then move on to the next question. stupid diagrams, her tests based on if you can interpret what she said... not the actual info she gave. she should be fired
Took this professor first as an undergraduate and then again as a graduate. She was wonderful in terms of knowledge and feedback and is widely published and respected on an international level. I never would have completed my master's without her advising and assistance.

This was a very hard, but great class. I thought Dr. Cerroni-Long was a fantastic teacher. I had no problem understanding her accent, and her enthusiasm is refreshing for teaching these days. I would take her course again.
For the date our paper was due she gave us the option to hand in our paper and leave or keep your paper till the end of class and stay. so of course most of the class gets up and leaves, come to find out she then hands out the class evaluation to the very few people remaining.
She does not make any sense at all.....with her italian accent its like shes speaking another language and she is a very boring teacher. Do not take her trust me on this or you will regret it.
I would highly recommend Liza to any student. I had her for multiple classes at EMU and actually rearranged my schedule so I could take her class. She has interesting and informative lectures and discussions. She is very approachable after class and is very willing to help students reach their goals. She is 1 of the best anthropologists out there.
Lectures are interesting. She makes makes me actually want to come to class. I don't know anyone else is talking about her accent - I can understand her just fine. Just come to class, do the work and you'll do fine.
Great teacher. I learned a lot from her classes.
I loved the class, it was very interesting! She only asked that you show up and participate and write a term paper. She is very understanding and I would take her again for another class. I didn't find her accent a problem at all and she was actually funny at times and you can tell that she has a passion for teaching and antrhopology.
I love this woman!! She is interesting, helpful, kind and VERY knowledgable! Her intro class was fascinating! Her accent was not at all a problem; like she says, it makes a person pay closer attention. She's fair, if not generous, with grading and just an all around pleasure to have as a prof. WONDERFUL!!! And highly reccomended.
puts questions from the first exams on the last one without going over them. Making the final very difficult. Dont recommend her
Very dedicated to her students. Willing to help those that want to help themselves....It seems that the previous person did not look at their blue and pink sheets passed out the first day of class and referenced thru the course. Maybe they did not show up to either of the review sections or asked question. Anyhow, she lets you know what is expected
Dr. Cerroni-Long is an amazing professor. She has an accent, but it's not distracting, especially given that she is so amazingly knowledgeable about her subject, and she goes out of her way to help students who demonstrate a strong interest in the class. I would highly recommend her to anyone who actually wants to learn something from this class.
Recommended for ANY major or field of study. This class was supremely interesting and Dr. L made this a class that students wanted to attended.
such a boring class thank god attendance is not mandtory
I LOVE Professor Cerroni-Long! I've had her for two classes (so far) and although her accent is a little difficult to understand sometimes, she is a fantastic teacher! She obviously loves what she does; the passion she has for teaching what she knows is rarely seen in teachers. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! You will learn so much from her!
Nice, funny, and helpful instructor. Barely any powerpoints or overheads and only 2 tests on top of that. No homework or quizzes to help you get your grade up, just 2 tests. She's hard to understand but I sat in the front and that solved most of this problem. If you ask for help she'll be glad to answer your questions.
Professor Cerroni-Long is a nice person, but an awful professor. Her lectures will bore you to tears, and her multiple choice exams are full of double negatives that will confuse you. I had a slight interest in anthropology before taking the course but now it is non-existant. Avoid this prof.
You'll never know how you're doing in this class. The textbook is useless so the only things you have to depend on are her lectures and the notes you take. Your only grades in the class are two tests (and a small participation grade that's impossible to do well on). Some people can learn purely from lectures and notes, I am not one of those people.
I don't know about everyone else, but once you get used to her accent, it's not hard to understand her at all. I think her lectures are interesting and not boring at all. I love the movie clips she shows and I love that we learn from notes. As long as you pay attention and take good notes, you'll do fine.Love that there are no pointless assingments
I had Liza for most of my Anthropology courses at EMU. Her accent was a little bit of a problem at first but I quickly learned to LOVE it. She is VERY helpful if you give a good effort first. If you do the assigned reading before attending lectures, then learning becomes more meaningful. Her use of English grammar is better than native speakers
I really felt that she wondered from what the topic was constantly. I did well because I took insane notes that covered exactly what she said. I think in a smaller class there could be more interaction. Take great notes on everything, she says not worry but if you want t pass, especially if you aren't going to read the text.
Very Nice but horrible class. Off subject all the time. There is only 1 test and that is your whole grade. Take a different class if at all possible.
Cross-listed as SOCL 214. If attend class, don't need books at all. She also makes one book available free.Took 1 1/2 days to go over syllabus i.e. she's thorough. Her accent is fine; she speaks better than many natives. Unlike some profs, I feel her class is equally comfy for those who do or don't like her material. She doesn't 'take sides'.
The course description of the class is not accurate. Also, don't take it if you wanted the cross listed SOCL. I would NOT recommend this class. The professor goes off topic and goes around in circles. I didn't feel like I learned as much as I could have. You will not know your grade until final grades are posted. Hard to get an A. Avoid this class.
If you need assignments and projects, I would look elsewhere. For most though, her classes are enjoyable. Two exams and the first one is more of a test run. (Her English is better than 60% of the students at EMU but some have problems with accents.) Specifically, she uses more of a guided discussion. Questions are encouraged. This is true academia.
Class is only offered every few years. She is an expert in her field and really knows her stuff. While her material may not be "Japan in 2010", it does give you a greater understanding for the foundation of Japanese culture. Two tests, first one is kind of a dry run. Also, the smaller class size makes for a really engaging course.
I took 3 classes with Dr. Cerroni-Long, one was an independent study. I found her teaching style much more informative and easy to follow than several of the other anthropology teachers. I really appreciate that she allowed me to follow my own interests for writing project. I think she is a wonderful and supportive teacher.
Liza is an excellent professor who will do whatever she can to help you succeed...as long as you do the work. If you like a professor who is structured, organized, knowledgeable and keen on theory then she's your gal. Oh, and she shows really hip movies to prove her point...
Difficult to understand at times, but you get used to it. Wanders off topic regularly. She spends too much time answering questions students submit that are not nearly as important as what she should be teaching us. Only grades are 2 exams and you never know how you are doing in the class. Its a mandatory class for some but I don't recommend it.
This class was a methodology course for ANTH majors, and it was actually pretty fun and painless. We did a lot of writing, with assignments due every week, but they were manageable. The group project and presentation aren't bad if you already know other majors. She wants you to learn to think critically and write well.
I have had this professor for a couple of classes. It's hard to rate the classes because you can tell she is passionate about her work, but she is not a very good teacher. You never really know what is expected of you or how you are doing in her class. At times she can be extremely catty and so it is hard to get friendly with her.
In my opinion, Dr. L is probably one of the finest instructors at this institution. Extremely knowledgeable, an enthusiastic and relatable instructor, and an absolute joy to study under. Make sure not to miss classes and take the time to interact with her outside of class, you'll have a fine time in any of her courses.
Hard to judge - she's a very smart lady, but she can get on a tangent and ride it into the sunset! She once spent over 2 hours of a three hour class answering one students question (complete with diagrams!). It was fun and fascinating to listen to, but ultimately I'm paying to learn a subject not hear a sermon, no matter how good the sermon!
Dr. L is not a professor that you want to take this class with. All she does is stand in front of the room and go off on tangents that don't relate. She spent 3 weeks going over the same exact thing over and over. There is nothing to study from so I hope you are really good at taking notes.
I would not recommend this teacher at all. All she does is go on and on and on about her experiences. I am an A average student and I got a C in her class. Whats that tell you? The textbook is a story book that is not helpful at all and her lectures do not correlate. Save yourself and your GPA. DO NOT TAKE!
She can be a little difficult to understand at first, but you get used to it. She rambles a lot, but if you take good notes, you should be fine. She only has two tests: a mid-term and final. And she takes the better grade of the two. She goes over all the 'key points' the day before the test and it's very helpful if you ask questions.
I loved Cerroni-Long's class she told many interesting stories and I learned a lot of great course material from her.
I didn't like this instructor for the honors section of Anth 135. Everyday of class is lecture with no discussion. Notecards are collected with thoughts for participation points. There are only 2 tests, mid-term and final. There was one essay due on the final day of class. Attendance is not taken, but it would be hard to pass without going.
Many students found her very difficult because they couldn't decipher what was note-worthy and what wasn't when she was giving lectures. There was much panic around midterm and the final because those were the only two grades that we had for the class. Monitors-somewhat like student helpers-are there if you need help with notes or miss class.
She tends to ramble so it's hard to figure out what you should take notes on. The regular course has only a (midterm and final) and the honors section has an additional paper. I asked her for help once when I missed class and she was very short with me and did not help at all. Interesting information but I really disliked the teaching style.
This professor is awful. Doesn't teach from the book. Rambles about anything and everything. Grade is all final (60%), participation(15%), and one essay (25%). Would never take her again or recommend to anyone.
Ceroni-long is very humous and incoperates this into her lectures. She has two major test a midterm and a final exam. They are not easy so take good notes, however she drops the lowest score and also gives xtra credit. One key is to get to know her ask questions after class. She does not take atendence, but if you miss you will. E lost. Awsome
Most amazing professor I've ever had. She really cares about what she teaches and is so enthusiastic in her lectures. Very knowledgable. I highly recommend this class and this professor!
I took this class for the Cultural Museum Studies certificate and I was majorly disappointed. Shes the creator of the program and she clearly states she has never even worked in a museum before! She rambles on and on about anthro (subject shes clearly passionate about) and fails to mention anything relevant about museums. Really disappointed. :(
I took the honors section of ANTH135 and about halfway through the semester I begs to dread attending the class, though I continued to because the two tests (midterm and final) are based solely on the lectures. The lectures, however, are nearly impossible to decipher, as Dr. L tends to ramble extensively, so it's very difficult to know what to note
She has an accent but its still easy to understand. Honestly you dont really need to attend the class just for the review days , are only 2 test. Sometimes the lectures were boring i missed alot of class but i still passed with an A
She is sort of disconnected from her students being that she has class monitors if you missed class, and she doesn't display her email on her syllabus. BUT, come to class, take her two tests, participate, and I guarantee you, you will pass. I am 100% SURE. Her syllabus is very specific as well. Very nice woman too.
I decided to take this class online, and its the worst decision i have ever made! Each week she posts a reading and you are to make a list of 10 key points, the next day after you submit it she posts key points of hers, and you have to self score yours to hers and they need to match to get points. No direction in this class at all! Very confusing
I'm taking this course online, and I would not recommend it to anyone. For every submission there is absolutely no feedback. There is only one exam (worth 20 points), there is no extra credit, and the point total is at 60.
This course is not like the traditional courses you may be used to if you've taken online classes before, but follow these tips and you should be okay. I recommend you read the assigned readings ahead of time, and keep paying attention for patterns as you compare key points. This professor has a positive outlook as she looks out for improvement.
This class was.. different. Each week you read a module- and built a learning portfolio. What I didn't like is that you didn't know your grade until it was submitted. You never knew if you were doing the portfolio correctly. thats what was hard for me. I missed 3. but I managed to pass with a B. Final is 20 points and the module work is 40 points.
She is really nice and means well, but she has no power points or slides, she uses maps and graphs. This makes it really hard to get notes because you basically just have to write down word for word what she says. She also, has a thick Italian accent, so that makes it 10x harder. You only get graded on the midterm, final, and participation.
Easy class with an alright professor. Her grades are based on the higher of 2 test scores and 10 points of participation: writing her comments or questions at the end of class on notecards for her to discuss next class. No notecards from you means 0 points for participation, even if you were there every day and scored well on the tests
I took this class online and I regret it GREATLY. She basically just posts her own writing work and then you are expected to pick key points from the reading. Her instructions for doing so in the syllabus are unclear. After you post your key points, she posts hers and you match them..... She doesn't actually TEACH. Totally disappointing class.
I like the class. There is a textbook, but I didn't need it for the exams. There are two exams- midterm (30 pts) and final (60 pts). I really like her grading system. If you don't do well on the midterm and do well on the final, she adds some points to the midterm. Lectures are kinda boring, but I have learned a lot and she uses visuals.
Do not take this class unless you are confident in taking notes without slides or no notes at all, she only uses diagrams and maps. She also have a very thick Italian accent so it can be difficult to understand. Very sweet lady, just a harder course!
Don't take her online. She doesn't post your grade to Canvas, you grade your own work. The criteria of the key point questions are vague and when you email her she has no idea how to help you do better. She really wants you to learn. Optional things are mandatory. Modules aren't posted ahead nor are you given a full week to do.
baddddd class, she doesn't use slides, and half the time its hard to tell if she is lecturing or just talking. there not a structured review for the final. never used the book once.
She brings a different perspective. Very interesting.
Decent class, you grade your self t& never know your grade until the end of the semester. If you email her too much or email her about things clearly pointed out, you will be marked down and it goes against your grade, which she warns . Lots of reading & trying understand non-american English. She seems to criticize american civilization a lot.
Grades off a portfolio where you complete assignments each week, with NO feedback. She then gives an extremely difficult final exam which covers ONLY vocabulary in a difficult way, from the whole semester. To add insult to injury, she will not discuss grades at all over email, although this was an online, and you will have to write her about grade
I loved both ANTH and Dr. L, but it wouldn't work for everyone. She loves her subject and presents it in depth, though without interest in the material I imagine it could be a slog. Her approach to grading (no feedback or grades until the final) could be stressful, but do your best and you'll be fine. And participate, in class or written notecards!
If I could recommend one thing, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. It was incredibly boring, and Dr. L does not provide feedback on any assignments. The workload is light, with a 15 min assignment each week, midterm, final, and essay, but the class doesn't make sense. Dr. L also has a thick accent, which is distracting sometimes, and she rambles quite a lot.
Does not grade assignments or give feedback. Does not post reading materials ahead of time so you can't work at your own pace. Wants student participation during class but does not make room for discussion and does not respect differing opinions. There were two tests and weekly assignments where you summarize the chapters of the textbook she wrote.
10 modules: list of key points and a reflection for each module. It is all self-graded until the very end of the semester where all of your work is put in a portfolio (60pts). Was never really sure if I was doing anything right. Final is HARD(20 pts). 20 questions fill in the blank from all of the vocabulary covered. Class is graded out of 80 pts
No feedback. No grade until the end. Do not take this class.
Totally hands-off teaching. No interaction or feedback, grades at the end, docks points if you ask something explained before. Must read one module p/week, create your key points, self-grade by matching against hers, then write reflections. Same for 10 weeks, plus final exam (fill in the blanks from word lists). OK class for independent learners.
Doesn't even teach the class just gives readings and busy work to do. No feedback on assignments and when she does need to give feedback it ends up being three days late. Overall terrible professor and doesn't even teach the class with little to no feedback.
Horrible teacher. Zero instruction and when you ask her questions she does not help. You don't know your grade till the end of the semester. I tried hard in this class and still got a B. She says grades are not negotiable. Literally the worse professor I have ever had. Avoid this class. The work wasn't that hard but still avoid!!!
I have spent a whole semester reading and re-reading the syllabus and still cannot understand it. The project outlines were so vague I felt like I was just blowing hot steam into all of them. Told me to ask my questions to other students. This was an online course, I feel like 90% of my problems could've been solved with an in person conversation.
I have never been more su*cidal than I was while taking this class. DO NOT do this to yourselves! She gives the most vaguest directions for the keypoints and reflections and you have no idea what she's asking for. Not to mention that you get NO feedback or grades until the end of the semester. You will have no clue what ur doing. Wasted my time.
NO CLEAR INSTRUCTION OF KEYPOINTS OR REFLECTIONS, YOU DONT SEE GRADES UNTIL THE END, NO FEEDBACK WHATSOEVER, JUST A FEW EMAILS TO THE WHOLE CLASS, VERY CONFUSING FINAL , NOT CLEAR ON GRADING CRITERIA, I WORKED HARD READING ALL HER PAPERS AND GOT A B.
The reason this course is hard is due to the fact that you don't actually get any grades till after the semester is finished. I disagree with this but it can work out in the student's favor. I struggled in the course but I reached out to her and she helped me catch up. Just keep up with work or if you can't ask her for help.
Took ANTH135 to cover one of my general education credits. Nothing is graded until the end of the semester and feedback is never provided for any of the assignments. The only learning material is her self written biography that is awfully worded and very difficult to understand. Two assignments are then due each week based on this biography.
This class was unlike any other I have taken. The directions can be difficult to understand so make sure to read them many times and do everything exactly as they say. The Professor does not give any grades until after the class is done. It is not an easy A.
Nonexistent instructor
This is the worst class I've ever had and the meanest professor, she gets mad when you email her or ask a question I asked her once she got mad and asked why did I ask a question and are-read the syllabus and she has no fair grading at all she make it very difficult for student and I didn't learn anything I just learned that I shouldn't email her
The class it's not hard but she's making it difficult you cannot ask her a question about any thing even if you didn't understand the syllabus and you can't see your grade until the end of the semester which is unfair and there's no feedback why you got this grade
This class isn't super hard BUT beware of long & wordy lectures You will be not be given any critiques on if you did the work correctly and she doesn't grade until the END of semester &its nonnegotiable. besides that the workload is more than doable and very simple as long as you carefully read and make sure you completely understand the material.
I'm only 1 month into her class, I reread the syllabus and was still unsure so I sent an email, where I was met by a rude response saying that the class "may not be for me". She also does not submit grades until the end of the semester, which is very unfair to students who may be struggling, and it seems reaching out is not an option.
Very rude and unprofessional, does not put grades in until the end of the semester and assignments are graded based on her vague, unclear standards, which can create issues for students who are putting in effort, but not receiving adequate grades due to her standards, if your work does not match hers verbatim you won't get an A
You have 10 reflections - Keypoints as long as you pay attention you'll do fine I was confused on the ALP But all you do is put both reflections and key points into to one full paper and you'll be fine she doesn't tell you how your doing in class
In the class she does not give out grades until the end of semester after final grades are due. I got a B in this class and genuinely I don't know how, I completed every assignment with full effort and she gives no feedback and is rude. This is an intro class I had to complete for my major, it should be graded worse than my 400 level classes.
I honestly looked through the student comments on here. I don't think there anything wrong with her class. It may seem different but that's what makes her class unique. I enjoy how everything is self-paced; deadline for keypoints and reflections are strict. Her instructions are clear + as long as you have similar points as hers. Overall, not bad!!
The classwork isn't very hard overall, and she provided the textbook. She never graded an assignment during the semester. I didn't receive a grade for anything until a week after the semester ended. It was very frustrating as she never provided criteria for grading so at the end of the semester my grade was a complete surprise.
This class can be challenging due to the lack of feedback and unclear grading policies. However, reaching out to the professor for help can make a big difference. Using unstuck ai alongside the course materials may also prove helpful for study prep.
Even though she had such a poor rating I did not think she would be that bad. I was wrong, it's absolute hell receiving zero grading criteria, no matter how much effort you put in, you have no clue if you are on the correct track. Her instructions come via long, convoluted announcements, and if you email her to clarify, she is always curt and rude.
I didn't think she'd be this bad even after seeing these reviews, but i was wrong. She doesn't grade anything until the end of the semester, so you have no clue how you're doing, even if you're trying your best. I emailed her just to ask for some clarification and she replied super rude. If you're thinking about taking her, DON'T
Laid back class w/o strict deadlines. Don't need to worry about exams or quizzes there is just an assignment every week. Instructions were fairly clear.
Professor I hope you are reading this. You're not special. The things you do aren't special. So just treat the class normal instead of trying to show people you're special.
Avoid this class at all costs. She does not grade anything until the semester is over by a whole week. She seemed nice over email, said she enjoyed reading my assignments, but still managed to give me a C+ in the class. I submitted all my assignments on time and followed all the mandatory key points.
