Dr. Cook is an excellent teacher. He has a great sense of humor.
He is by far the best teacher I have ever had but he is also very hard. I have never learned so much... even though you couldn't tell by my grades.

Drool Fest, if you are stupid take his class.
Funny guy!
Dr. Cook is a great guy who is willing to help a student in need. He sometimes keeps class a little late, but the few extra minutes is a small price to pay for the help he offers.
I must say his class is a nice break from the usual memorization of names and dates. If you want an easy A, then take someone else. If you want to actually learn something and get your money's worth, then take Dr. Cook.

Very difficult but a good class. He's a fun instructor and is still down to earth even though he has a Ph.D. like the rest of the insane professors!
He was apparently out to get us on the final exam. It was the hardest test I ever took and made me drop down a letter grade even though I studied so hard for his final!
Dr. Cook is a very caring teacher. His class is hard but very interesting. He will go the extra mile to help you get a better grade and gets excited when his students do well. I encourage you to take his class b/c it will change your outlook on history
He definatly knows his history, especially that of France. Most importantly, he understands how to TEACH and relate the material to the students, not just memorize places and dates like many instructors do these days. I wish he offered more classes!
He knows his history and helps you to understand it also.
If you're looking for an 'easy A' - this is not your professor. However, if you're one of the unique students that actually want to LEARN something about history, this guy knows his stuff. I've had him for several classes, and he is, by far, the best!
Easy A Teacher if you like History and dont mind a little reading. He's a good teacher and won't mind one bit helping out. One of the best HY teachers here, although he needs to retire some of his shirts and ties.
great teacher. whatever they are paying him, he deserves a raise.
He's an excellent teacher! He gets you to understand it and if you don't he knows and sticks with it. GREAT TEACHER!
Dr. Cook is a grat teacher. He knows his stuff, is very organized with his lectures and is always there to help you out if you need it. I highly suggest him to all. Be warned though: He does expect you to work for your grade!
He's a great teacher. This is the first time I have ever learned anything about history and I was actually interested in it. His tests are hard but if you show up to class and take notes, you should get an A. He does tend to lose track of time...
Dr. Cook is amazing. I don't remember the majority of what I had to memorize for other history classes, but I'll remember the things I learned in his class. His evolved sense of humor is damn rare in teachers, too. Republicans beware.
He is a great teacher however he does expect alot from his students. As long as you study you will do fine, plus he gives bonus work.
There aren't many history professors better than Dr. Cook. He can be tough, but how else are we to learn?
Do not buy the book that is on the list.....
I really enjoyed this class. There were a lot of notes, but he explained everything he taught very well. The tests are hard for people who aren't good at memorizing. There are IDs, which are basically definitions of words and why it was important to history. If you like Western Civ, take this class.
Dr. Cook is probably the most knowledgeable history professor at JSU besides Dr. Jackson. HY 304 "Military History" is a must-have for history and war buffs cause you study only the good stuff: war. His tests are multiple choice and essays that you get to prepare ahead of time, so it's not that hard
I LOVE THIS TEACHER...DR. COOK SEEMS HARD BUT HE IS NOT...IF YOUR READ THE NOTES YOU TAKE AND TAKE NOTES OUT OF THE BOOK...PAY ATTENTION IN CLASS...DO NOT LET HIM INTIMADATE YOU...
Dr. Cook is the best teacher I have had throughout high school and now college. He makes everything understandable and interesting. He tells you what you need to know for the tests and sets up a study group. If you like someone who tells it like it is, take his class! Don't buy the book.
Dr.Cook is an admirable professor. This is a professor that demonstrates a quality of a higher institution for learning. If you are not appreciative of such quality, don't take his class. It's the morons that taint wonderful educators! Excellent professor with an impressive love for his subjects.
Dr. Cook imparts his impressive knowledge of history with passion. It's clear he loves teaching; he makes history come alive for the class. For those who say that he's too hard, they're simply idiots who have no clue that history involves a lot of reading and writing. I will take his class again.
GREAT teacher. Tests aren't just super easy, you need to study for them. He will tell you he's somewhat difficult, he's very honest. If you study his lecture, you will make good on the test. He is funny and very clear on everything and will answer all your questions. If you want to learn, take him!!
He's a great teacher. His test are challenging. He's really knowlegable, funny, and great person all together. I highly recommend his class. It's not easy you'll have to work but it's worth it. Don't buy the book on the list. :)

This guy is tough in his upper level classes. He is however the most helpful professor on the face of the planet. I recommend taking as many classes with Dr. Cook as possible.
Dr. Cook was a lot of fun. His class was tough but he did a good job of teaching. If you paid attention u did just fine.
The class was good. I really enjoyed his lectures. They taught me a lot. And it didn't hurt that he was good looking either.
Dr. Cook is Great
Had this teacher for both Western Civ and I love him. However, he doesn't put up with crap. If you don't want to study, don't take him...so far, this is the teacher i've learned the most from.
Dr. Cook is a great teacher. this class will not be easy, but take notes, DO THE STUDY GUIDE! come to the study sessions before the test(it made a letter grade diff on my tests)....and take notes. hes a great teacher if you do your part. there are no tricks, but he will make u think and put forth a reasonable amount of effort for your grade.
Great professor who knows his material! Great lectures and interesting as well.
Loved his classes. Tests staight from the notes and no book. A study guide and a study group before the test. He practically gives you an A and still people were failling his class. I don't see how, bu they did. If you have questions, you could always go by his office and he would help you anyway he could.
He has been the ONLY history teacher to actually make me consider taking another history class! He makes the classes that interesting, and he REALLY loves his subject.
Great professor, test are easy if you listen and take good notes. Has some required reading but most of it was interesting and relevant to what he was going over in class.
What a wonderful teacher. Please don't take his class if you aren't willing to actually study and try. Class is very fun, he is so sweet. Need to study to do well on tests, and he will tell you this first day of class. Sets up study groups before tests which are VERY helpful.
Great professor! It's obvious that he has real knowledge about the subject matter and he makes it interesting for those of us who are 'historically challenged.' Highly recommend!
He is a very good teacher. I liked him bunches and bunches. He's very sweet and helpfull. I failed his class, though, because his class is so hard.
Thinks he's a rock star. Not bad, but no rock star. Disorganized.
Dr. Cook did an excellent job in what could have been a tedious course. As a graduate student, I was appreciative that we were able to give presentations in class rather than a research paper. Dr. Cook's lectures are easily to follow and are all relevant to the course. The best part was the softball final we were given in the spirit of Xmas.
"Sigh,"I wish I could take his class next sem.Cook is a great prof. and won't bore you with the material. His tests are a bit difficult, since there is an essay portion--go to as many study sessions as you can and get as much info as possible. No joke--it really helps the GPA.
Excellent teacher! Go to class, pay attention, TAKE NOTES...PASS If not, you will fail his test. Offers extra credit often.
He tries very hard to make learning about history fun! He brings videos to watch that are relevant; we have watched segments of the Simpsons and Seinfeld. His tests can be difficult if you fail to take good notes and study. He is laid-back and a very fun, enthusiastic teacher. I would definitely recommend him! =)
Great teacher. doesnt care if you come to class or not, but if you dont come to class everyday to take notes then you wont do good on the tests. gives extra credit
I had such a great time in Dr. Cook's class. He makes the material interesting and easy to understand. I would love to take his class again. (even military history) Oh, and he's so cute too!
He is easy to understand and he is also very helpful. His tests are hard if you dont study but if you do you will so well on the tests. GOOD TO CLASS!!! Its fun and he knows what he is talking about and he makes it alot of fun!
VERY disappointed. Always started and dismissed class late. Lectures are tedious; he moves through material too fast to keep up. Test questions are ambiguous and not graded objectively. Somewhat unhelpful during office hours. I am a History minor, have taken the most difficult prof's in the department; will NOT be taking Dr. Cook again.
Dr. Cook was so awesome I'm taking another of his courses in the fall. The material was very well presented to the class and the reading was boring but worth reading totally for the bonus points! Take Dr. Cook for your History Courses @ JSU, you won't regret it, just read when your told to!!
He was a pretty good teacher. Be prepared to take lots of notes. Otherwise, this class is pretty interesting. He's a nice guy, you'll like his class.
He is a pretty good teacher. Be sure to take lots of notes and pay attention as well. He's a nice guy and you'll enjoy his class.
Very helpful doesn't want to fail you. If you listen to him and take good notes then you will do great.
This class was hard for me. I had to take quiz, read 2 books, and write an essey. But He was very nice teacher, and he was very helpful.
The most amazing professor on the planet, hands down!
he is lots of fun! One of the BEST AT JSU but his multiple choice are EVIL!!
He has to be the best history teacher EVER! he makes the class interesting and gives lots of GREAT movies for extra credit..you have to do your work for the class but its well worth it!
Going into this class just judging by the name I thought it was going to be a stuffy old lady...when it turned out to be Dr. Cook I couldn't have been more thrilled! He is the most charismatic/passionate professor I have had to date. I think he truly cares about keeping his students interest, and at the same time...earn their respect!
Dr. Cook is very well rounded. he seems to know exactly how and what he would like for his students to learn. He also knows that a classroom that is falling asleep will never learn anything. So he keeps you very interested in what he has to say!
His class is hard, but he's a good teacher. You have to pay attention and take notes to do well on his tests. His tests aren't easy but if you study, and go to study sessions you'll do okay. He's one of the best teachers I've ever had and he really makes History interesting! He also gives GREAT movies for bonus points!
Dr. Cook is the best. His class is not easy, but if you work, you can make a good grade. He is very funny, and makes class interesting.
Dr. Cook is a great teacher. Be prepared to study and actually learn something. His classes are never boring. You can tell he has a passion for history. Don't take this class if you want an easy ride. You will probably fail.
This class was hard, but this was an excellent teacher...he was very interesting. I made a C.
Dr. Cook is the best teacher I have ever had. He makes class fun and interesting. He knows his stuff and if you like history, he gives you a lot of cool facts! He will help you too.I would recommend him to anyone.
Dr. Cook is a great teacher. You have to be in class and study, his test are HARD but he will help you. I really liked his class because he wanted to teach and wanted to be there so I would say take his class!
THE best professor at JSU.
Dr. Cook went above and beyond with us. He not only gave us information til the last minute of the last class, but he encouraged us countless times to email or swing by his office if we had questions. As a senior who's graduating this spring, I can say he is one of the best professors I've had the pleasure of taking.
Dr. Cook is an extremely BRIGHT professor. He knows what he is talking about, and truly has an intense love for History. It is Professors like him that make me want to be a history major. I can not wait to take another class of his. His tests are fair and books are great. He gave quizzes that really helped to boost your grade! I made an A!
407 Dr. Cook is pretty slick. I really enjoyed his course. However, I struggled with his multiple choice on his exams. He gives quizzes based off of novels and he also loves the use of maps.
Take Dr. Cook's class if you are interested in learning and appreciate a professor who does what he can to help you succeed. I will certainly take one of his classes again.
Man if you go to JSU and you haven't taken this class you are missing out. Funniest teacher ive ever had made everything about history fun. I really enjoyed his class.
He gives entertaining lectures, so it's easy to pay attention in his class, but his tests are really hard. You don't have to use the textbook at all, but you will have to read a novel. I recommend him though, I got out with an A (barely).
Great teacher, very interesting but you have to study and read or you won't make it out of there alive. His mutliple choice is tough in his upper-level classes and he expects a lot of you. He's very helpful and I suggest taking him.
one of the best history professors I've ever had. If you take his class, you WILL have to study for his tests. If you hate doing that and reading novels, don't take him. He is very helpful, though, and he encourages you to ask questions. He also gives bonus opportunities. If you're really interested in history, I suggest you take him.
You will have to read novels, take notes, and listen to lectures. Exams are not easy, but are fun to take if you really study or have an interest in History. A fantastic teacher, not too difficult if you study well, but not so easy that you are bored. He's one of the greatest teachers I've ever had.
Dr. Cook is an awesome professor! If your looking for an easy class, then you should look elsewhere, but if your looking to learn something and get your money's worth, then Dr. Cook is IT!Most helpful and informative teacher I have EVER had! Even if you don't like history, Dr. Cook makes it very interesting and fun as well.
One of the best teachers that I've ever had. He also assigns some of the best books that I've ever had to read. He is, "THE WAR GUY."
Love love love Dr. Cook! I hated history before coming to JSU and it turned out to be my favorite class both semesters of my freshman year because of him. His tests aren't the easiest, but last semester he would have study sessions the night before the test where he would order pizza and outline what we needed to know. I recommend him to everyone!
Very good professor if someone is interested in history because he explains things very well and in a good story style manner instead of just barraging you with just the fact. One of the top 5 at JSU in my opinion.
An awesome teacher!!! The tests are extremely hard. Great at explaining things and making everything in class understandable.
I didn't think I would like this class, but he makes history interesting, I love this class and will be taking him again next semester. His test are hard, but as long a you study there shouldn't be any problem.
He makes class interesting and offers study sessions with pizza where you literally get test answers. His test are tough but if you study, you'll be fine. I really recommend this teacher. He is one of my favorites so far.
Good Professor. Makes class interesting, good everyday analogy, keeps concise, promotes interclass discussion. Must read material which is not taxing for quiz. You know format after class day one. He is NOT the professor you want to hear just prior to bed as he makes interesting. He will be my third time taking for class. I recommend to take!
Great teacher keeps you interested in what your learning so you dont know your learning i have taken both his western civ. 1 and western civ. 2 classes and i would take him again
Fantastic teacher!Extremely helpful and makes lectures interesting. Offers group study sessions complete with pizza. HOWEVER, His tests are very detailed and you must study and take good notes if you want to pass. Attend class and take the bonus quizzes he offers, they are lifesavers
Dr. Cook is a really good professor! He makes you read, but you take quizzes on the books and that helps out your grade. You do need to study for his tests though. He will help you whenever you ask and he keeps the class fun! Definitely take him!
Mr. Coook is honestly probably the best teacher I've ever had. His lectures are interesting and he makes sense of everything. He isn't the easiest teacher in the world but as long as you put in some solid effort and study time, you'll be fine. Best teacher ever!
Dr. Cook is an excellent professor with a passion for teaching.
People say he is hard and his test are difficult. Not really! his lectures are very entertaining and yes you have to study...you can get an A you just have to really work for it...great teacher...if you are not solid on history or if you think it's boring..take him..he will keep you interested...
I love him!!!!!!! He is a great teacher and super funny. His quizzes are challenging but he is a great instructor. I recommend him to anyone
If you come to class and take notes you should do well. He gives a reading quiz every day but again, this is college and you will learn a lot. Great sense of humor and lectures fly by!
Fantastic teacher! Class is so interesting that you don't want it to end. Expect a lot of reading and reading quizzes. I would definitely take another class w/Dr. Cook!
Love, Love LOVE Dr. Cook!! He is definitely one of the best professors at JSU! His class is extremely entertaining and he is a wonderful teacher! I made sure I could take his class again next semester!! Just make sure you do what he tells you and you'll be fine!
Professor Cook is an awesome ptofessor. Don't buy the western civilization book because we never used it. However, his test are extremely hard so you might need it for independent studies. You MUST study for his test. Professor Cook is super hilarious and an overall good professor.
Dr. Cook is a fantastic professor. He uses ever second of his class, but he's so interesting that it's like watching TV. His tests are hard, but study and you'll be fine. MUST study. Very clear and very helpful. Extra cred offered. Don't get the text though. I made sure to sign up to take him next semester. Great class.
He made the class fun, but challeging
Professor Cook made things very interesting and was very helpful.
He curses once every minute. He is funny. He makes History interesting. Tests are HARD! You must study. you ave to read multiple books. Do not need textbook. You have to write a 5 page essay by the end of the course.
Excellent professor - engaging, clear in the material and good presentation. Reading and studying are required like any history class, but grades are fairly assigned.
Dr.Cook is brilliant. He's one of my favorite professors at JSU. He's passionate about History and really funny. Don't expect an easy A. You have to come to class read for the quizzes and study hard for the tests. You don't need the textbook but you'll need to buy a few novels.
This is the first time I've ever enjoyed a history class! Make sure to take good notes every class and go over all the study guides before his test because they are not easy! We never used the textbook but the novels are very important. He'll do anything he can to help students who want an A to get it. Favotite teacher I've had yet at JSU!
Definitely my favorite professor thus far at JSU. His tests are hard but if you take notes and study you'll be fine. He actually cares about what he's teaching and makes the class interesting. Take his class if you can!
My favorite professor at JSU so far. He's funny and explains everything very clearly. Very interesting class. Test can be hard, but if you take good notes and study, they're easy. Textbook isn't required; you have to read the novels, though and take the quizzes. The quizzes are easy as long as you read the books.
Dr. Cook is an extremely good lecturer. Though a lot of material is covered throughout the course, I found I barely needed to study as long as I came to class and took good notes. He was extremely engaging.
Before I took Dr. Cook I hated history and everything to do with. I dreaded taking it in college. But now I love history and look forward to his class. I've already signed up to take him again next semester! It's not the easiest class, but it's definitely worth taking. He is hilarious and very helpful to those who care.
Dr. Cook is thebomb.com. Thorough knowledge of the subject, passionate about his work, and funny as crap. Best professor at JSU, hands down.
LOVE Dr. Cook! Take his class! Period. I will warn you, HE IS NOT EASY but.. If you take good notes, study, and at least act like you care he is more than willing to help you with anything. His lectures are informative and he is hilarious and makes lecturing fun. I highly advise you taking him. I've already signed up for his 300 level class.
Amazing teacher. Very clear, very fun. He teaches history and makes it interactive and interesting to the most apathetic student. Would recommend to any person who has to take a history class.
Dr. Cook is VERY entertaining and knowledgable. But he is HARD!!! You will learn but Western Civ is difficult!
Wonderful teacher. Knew his stuff, and taught it to us in a creative and fascinating light. If given the opportunity to take a class with this man, do so. You will not regret it. Your book isn't used too much and the tests are pretty simple (he tells you EVERY single thing that will be on them). If I could take the class a second time I would.
Dr. Cook is freaking awesome! Love, love, love Dr. Cook!! If you don't want to study don't take his class!. He offers study sessions and pretty much gives you all the info for the ID's on his exams. DON'T MISS THE STUDY SESSION! Hands down the funniest, best professor I've had thus far! Can't wait to take him again. Be sure to STUDY!
Dr. Cook is amazing! The best professor I have had so far at JSU! It is difficult, but worth it!
Dr. Cook is an amazing professor that makes learning history fun!
Not an easy A, but a GREAT teacher.
Dr. Cook is a great professor and truly cares about your success. However, you should go to class and study for his tests. If you study then you will do well in his class. He is always willing to meet up with you and look over your notes. He also uses power points for notes which I found very helpful. I would recommend him strongly.
Dr. Cook is absolutely the best professor at JSU. Love his class! It is very engaging and the material is clear. He is funny and down to earth. The tests can be hard, so you must study. BUT studying will give an easy A or B (at least). And he also gives plenty of opportunities for extra credit. If you're looking for a great teacher go with Cook!
By the end of the summer I will have taken Dr. Cook FIVE times! If I could take him for every class I would. Although I'm a History Major and love history already he makes me love it that much more! Now mind you he is NOT EASY so if you are looking for an easy class go elsewhere! I hope one day when I have my Doc I am even half the professor he is!
great teacher!
Dr. Cook is one of the best professors at JSU. He is personable, intelligent, and humorous which makes his lectures very entertaining as well as informative. I look forward to taking more of his classes. His tests are not easy, if you do not come to class and neglect to do the reading assignments, otherwise you should do well in his class.
You will learn a lot in this class! He makes history interesting, but not easy. You will have to study and do extra reading assignments. He is a fun guy and will help the students who try. He gives several bonus opportunities as well. I would recommend him!
Hilarious, interesting, & beware, ladies, the man has swagger.
I had Dr. Cook for western civilization 1 and 2 and he was great! His classes are lecture style but he's interesting and really passionate about the subject so it's not hard to pay attention. Lots of notes and tests are hard but he holds study sessions which are very helpful. Go to class, go to study sessions. Definitely recommend!
I love him as a professor, he's hilarious and makes history fun to learn. I LOVE history, but struggled in his class. You learn a lot, he makes the class enjoyable, but if you are looking for an easy A DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS! But if you love history and want to not be bored to death, I recommend him, I plan on taking him again. He's also kind of hot
To pass his class, you must study! You also have to read books and take quizzes on them. His quizzes are super easy, but the tests are hard. Go to the review sessions he offers, study your notes, and read the books, and you will make an A.
Loved this class! I hated history in high school, but this class was great!
Dr. Cook is by far the best Professor I have had the pleasure of taking at JSU. He is more than willing to help you if you are struggling with his class. Gives plenty of opportunities for extra credit. YOU MUST STUDY FOR HIS TESTS!!! The up side to this is the fact that EVERYTHING on the test is covered in class. No surprises. Take him!!!
If you don't want to study, don't take this class. You definitely have to work to receive a good grade. Lectures are awesome.
He's funny and interested in the material, and he tries to make it interesting for his students. I easily got an A both semesters, but I can see having to work for it. There are 4 exams and 10 quizzes and maybe a paper. The quizzes are super easy, and he does study sessions before each exam. You don't need the textbook. TAKE HIM!
I took him for 101 and 102 and would take him again if I had the chance! The text book is not a necessity but it helps with maps and to get more information if you feel unconfident about the test. He offers extra credit opportunities and his help with anything. I hated History before I took him but I really enjoy it now.
Dr. Cook's class is seriously the best class you can take at JSU. His lectures are longish, but he makes it very interesting. He's very passionate! Make sure to take thorough notes in what he says, not just what's on the powerpoint. It will make a world of a difference. I'm a history major, and I plan on taking every single class he offers.
Mr. Cook is hilarious and tries to keep his lectures exciting. The quizzes are pretty basic and straight to the point if you do the reading. If you are not a history person I would not suggest you take his class his test are tough and since we don't really use the book you don't have many resources to study from. Probably would not take him again.
His tests are half multiple choice and half writing. It can be an easy class if you put in the time to study. He's hilarious
He assigns books to read, and there's quizzes on that all the time. Tests are hard, but if you go to class and study a little bit, you'll pass. I would definitely recommend going to the study sessions. He is the best teacher I have had.
Seriously one of the best teachers I have ever had. He's very passionate about history and definitely knows his stuff. Will be taking his class next semester and any other class he offers.
This guy knows his stuff. He's pretty funny too. Ask him to tell you the story about the "Duke of Guise". His classes are very interesting and because of this you won't WANT to skip class. The tests are pretty straight forward in the sense that you either know the material or you don't. I recommend taking Dr. Cook's classes.
Even if I find a topic in class extremely boring, Dr. Cook's upbeat attitude and wonderful sense of humor makes up for it. You have to study and listen in class. It's important to take good notes and take advantage of the bonus points he offers. Uses blackboard very well and the book helps in finding map locations and rereading material.
Super nice the tests are just pretty hard. He does make the class time fun and enjoyable. plenty of chances for extra credit. and you have to study hard for tests. He does take roll a lot so i'd be there. You do need the books assigned for class.
I love Dr. Cook! He is hilarious, and makes going to class really fun. Honestly, HY101 has been my favorite class this semester. I will say that the tests can be challenging at times, you really do have to work for it -- but that's the point, anyway, learning the subject. He is a great teacher, and allows you to get bonus pts by watching films!
Dr. Cook is a very nice guy. Very funny. Very helpful. He puts a lot of humor into his lectures and they are very interesting. Tests are quite difficult but as long as you pay attention and study you should be okay. I learned a lot in this class.
Dr. Cook has an amazing personality. I thought I would really like his class, until we got into the tests. They are extremely hard and you have to memorize maps, at least 75 questions, and he does 7 I.D's which you have to remember (each a paragraph long) He also assigns on average 5 chapters a night to read and then he tests you on it the next day
He is a respectable teacher, he's there if you ask for help, and he gives several extra credit opportunities. However, I don't think anyone can honestly say that his class is easy. It is critical that you take diligent notes for every lecture.
Dr. Cook is by far one of the best at JSU. Take his class, you won't regret it. Don't be fooled though, this class is challenging, but rewarding to those who put in the work and time to pass. Goes out of his way to make the subject material interesting. Struggling still? He held study session before every test. Extra credit was a thing too!
Dr. Cook's tests are pretty tough because there is a lot of information to remember. Tests include maps (not too difficult), about 75 multiple choice questions, and short answer questions. He is less concerned with minute details than the significance of a person or event. Don't forget about the three papers due at the end of the semester!
Dr. Cook is an amazing lecturer! You're going to learn a lot and get a few laughs at every lecture. Don't feel bad if you miss one though, as he posts them to YouTube, and there's the textbook, of course. It's an easy class, but if you don't review the information, you are going to fail most likely. Also, he assigns great books to read.
Take Dr. Cook for any class he offers. Do it. You won't regret it.
Amazing teacher! You have to study and pay attention to his lecture, but it's worth it. And plus he's a cutie
One of the best teachers I've ever had. He has amazing lectures, he always makes them interesting & funny & makes learning about it fun. You have to read 2 whole books & take quizzes on them, but easy points if you read & pay attention to the plot. The tests are very difficult. You MUST study to do well on his tests. Absolutely hilarious and nice.
Dr. Cook knows history and knows how to teach it well. He uses PowerPoint in his lectures and keeps the class interesting. His tests are difficult if you don't study but even if you're bad at history, you can still pass. He gives extra credit papers which helps! He gives quizzes on books that you have to read but the quizzes help your grade!!
Dr. Cook is an awesome professor, I took him for both Wesern Civ classes and I really enjoyed it. He does not put up with BS and if you do not study you will not make good grades on his exams. He doesn't put up with rudeness and he is a straight shooter, don't take this class if you don't plan on taking it seriously. Super funny and sarcastic!
Overall, he's a teacher that won't bore you or put you to sleep. Energetic and humorous, approachable and understanding. Gives plenty of oppurtunities for easy points. Studying will probably be necessary for the tests, but for quizes? As I said, easy points.
Tests are pretty hard but if you go to class and read over your notes you should be fine. Quizzes are extremely easy.
Good teacher but can get off topic at times. Be prepared to study, but is very clear about what will be on test
Dr. Cook was hard at first because I didnt know how to study for his class. Only take this class if youre willing to study a lot and read chapters every night for his books. His class is really easy if you put in effort! And he gives a lot of extra credit and easy quizzes. Great teacher and he has a great personality
Dr. Cook is a great teacher. His lectures are entertaining. All you have to do is take notes and red them and you will be fine.
Dr. Cook is an AMAZING professor with even better lectures. There was a lot of assigned reading, but it just made the quizzes super easy points.
He has a unique sense of humor which is prevalent throughout the class. He will help you out as long as you try in the class. This is not a hard class at all. If you miss lectures they are all on YouTube. You can watch movies for extra credit and you have probably already seen at least one of them. All around great class if you try
Overall a nice guy and this rating is not against him, but his class. Teaches lecture class like a hybrid class due to the flipped classroom that wasnt made aware of when signing up for the class and you have to watch his lectures online. Lectures dont give the whys about history and memorization is how you pass tests.
Dr. Cook is awesome! Highly recommend taking him for Western Civ!
My study style: Oral+Visual, Practice majority of lectures can be found via Youtube. Content is 80-90% same as in-class lecture. Great Prof, make things interesting. I hate history, but class was entertaining. Exams: geography + multiple choice. Has extra credit based on movie reviews. Debates are an interesting concept for class. Hard to fail.
Very hard class.
Such an awesome professor. His 101 course was the first history class I ever actually enjoyed. Tests are easy if you pay attention and take notes (not just rewriting what's on the powerpoints). Definitely loves history and you can tell he cares for his students. Records his lectures and posts them to youtube.
One of the best professors I've ever had. The tests are mostly from the powerpoints he goes over during class, and if you miss a class then you can watch the videos he posts to YouTube. Personally I went to every class and watched all the videos and made a really easy A. Don't expect to just glide through, but he makes it pretty easy for you.
Dr. Cook is an awesome professor! He makes Western Civilization interesting and fun. Instead of using the textbook, he chooses three different novels that will be read and quizzes on throughout the semester. I am taking Dr. Cook next semester and I cannot wait! 10/10
Dr. Cook was by far the funniest prof. I had this year, super hard tests and quizzes but only cause his lectures are so good. Super funny and is always putting a fun twist on historical events.
Dr. Cook is one of my favorite professors at JSU. He makes learning so much fun and entertaining that you actually want to learn history! This is the second class Ive taken of his and I would definitely take him again in the future if the opportunity arises.
Absolutely wonderful, it'd be hard to find a better prof.
I'm a former student and I decided to check Rate My Professor for my favorite teachers and I see that Dr Cook is still top rated. It's been ten years since I've taken his class and he's still one of my favorite professors of all time. Ask him to tell you the story about "Larry! Duke of Guise!"
I didn't expect a 4-week class to be easy, but it has an insanely heavy workload. Hours & hours of video lectures & three long novels to read plus quizzes, as well as watching 2+ films & writing papers on each one. He's a good professor, but it's almost impossible to take this particular class while working and/or taking other classes. Beware.
I really regret waiting until last minute to start on this class for Dr. Cook, I quickly found that his lectures were awesome! There is a lot of them and YOU MUST watch them to pass his class. They are actually really interesting and you can tell Dr. Cook is passionate about history. You will no doubt learn a lot from this guy!
Dr. Cook definitely knows his stuff. He is an amazing professor and his lectures are always interesting. His tests are really hard though.
I really enjoyed this class! Hes a really cool and funny professor. I will take him again next semester. The books he chose for us to read are interesting as well.
You have to come to class to take the quizzes but will be required to watch his lectures on YouTube outside of class. I found this helpful as you get to hear the material more than once. If you care about your grade he will care too, and will tell you as much on the first day. If you watch the lectures and take notes youll be fine.
Professor Cook was my favorite professor from this semester. He tells you straight up on the first day that the class will be hard, but if you put forth any effort, you will pass the class. He does not take attendance, but if you do not go to class then you will have no idea what is going on. Watch his lecture videos thoroughly and you will be fine
The class is more of a teach yourself kind of class and the professor hardly ever reached out to the students. The tests are oddly specific with questions that are more so choose the best answer and not the correct answer. The teacher gives students a boatload of lectures that don't even match the tests. Would not take this teacher online.
would not recommend taking his summer class. over the span of 4 weeks there are about 12 quizzes, 4 test, 2 papers, 2 300 page books you have to read and about 8 hours of recorded lectures you have to take notes on. Absolutely brutal of a class.
He is a very passionate and nice teacher though it sometimes feels like he does not respect the student's time. His test is multiple-choice but they are kind of tricky. You are screwed if you missed his lectures. His classes consist of long lectures throughout the whole class, don't think we have done anything else this semester.
I loved taking Dr. Cook. His class was a lot of fun. He tells you out of the gate you will have to put in some effort but if you can do that the class is an easy A. There were only 4 major tests, 2 film papers, and we had to read 2 books. But as long as you work hard, you will pass. I will be taking a class with him again.
When I first looked at the class syllabus it seemed like a lot of work. If you pace yourself it is very manageable. He lectures in a way that is easy to understand. I really maintained the information even after the tests. Just be ready to watch a lot of video lectures. I loved the class, and the professor, already signed up for another semester.
Most of your grade is weighed on about 4 test. The test are multiple choice, but extremely specific and tricky. When I reached out for help, he successfully dodged all of my questions. My class didn't do about 1/3 of the syllabus. If you miss class, you will be lost. He does know his content well. You are required to read a novel (its not bad).
I took Dr. Cook for both HY 101 and 102 and it was one of my favorite classes for the school year. It was very entertaining to watch his lectures in class and the books he requires to read are not very difficult.
Dr. Cook gives fun and easy to follow lectures, as well as posting video lectures online. He got us engaged in the class as well. He posts a ton of quiz grades on things from class lectures to assigned readings, which helps bring up your grade with his more difficult tests. He passed out vocab sheets which helped a lot with studying for his tests.
Dr. Cook is an amazing professor. He is very fair and caring.
I actively signed up for a second class with Dr. Cook after a positive experience with the first class I took. Be ready to read novels and really pay attention to lectures. If you try you can do well, if you slack off I wish you the best of luck. I would recommend taking one or two of his courses even if you don't like history.
Dr. Cook is knowledgable and has high expectations within his class. Study the video lectures and know your stuff. Dr. Cook is one of the few history teachers that tries to do interesting activities outside lecture, like debates and plays, though it is still lecture focused. Complete movie reviews ahead of time. Study for tests. Read the novels.
Dr. Cook grades fairly and has high expectations. You must stay on top of readings. I worked hard for my A.
Dr.Cook is BY FAR the best history professor I've ever had. When you watch the video lectures, you have to actually listen to what he's saying. Don't just copy the slides. As long as you take notes and LISTEN, you will have a great time! The class is entertaining and he makes it very easy to remember things. Just be sure to study the notes!
This class was okay, if you pay attention and show up you should do fine. there is a play, quite a few pop quizzes, two debates, and four main exams that are a NEED to study for. he also has you read two novels, which were kind of boring but the quiz grades cannot be dropped so I would read the books or change classes.
I liked Dr. Cook's HY111 class. It was usually very organized into what we were doing that week. Everything on the tests were on the Powerpoints that he posts in Canvas.
Dr. Cook is excellent as long as you don't take his comments personally. His class is fun and has debates. Good luck trying to get in touch over email though. If you need to talk about something, go to his office hours or talk during class. The class was also randomly canceled most days, so check for announcements on Canvas.
Very fair professor. Plenty of opportunity to do well.
I want other students to know that when you come to JSU and Dr. Cook is your professor, you will pass as long as you do the right thing. And you'll also learn some life lessons along the way.
