He explains all the concepts clearly but the lectures are really boring. The assignments aren't hard but theres a lot. A lot depends on if you get a good TA. There's bonus questions on all tests which helps boost grades. Overall a really average class, you can do well if you get a good TA
Basically, the only thing you can achieve a better grade is to read the textbook again and again because lectures are basically useless. Quizzes are ok, but exams are tough.
I honestly really enjoyed Pizzati's class. He's a funny guy, and also very kind and understanding. He lectures very slowly, but the good part about that is you can't really miss anything he says. Easy A, just go to class; what he lectures will be on the test. The book has extra information you don't really need because he won't test you on it.
Horrible ! Super boring ! Just that.
Best economy professor taken here at USC so far
He was late to class 50% of the time for his 8 a.m. class. There are 2 quizzes, 2 midterms, and 1 final. I did really well on the quizzes but failed the midterms. Most of the class needed an extra hour of test taking because the tests are hard. He wasn't at the office hours on finals week. He said there wouldn't be a curve but I haven't taken final
Super clear syllabus that the Prof sticks to. 10 homeworks, 2 midterms and 2 quizzes. No final but a final paper worth 30%. The homeworks are graded by a TA who grades super nicely and I think the TA grades the midterms/quizzes too and they are also graded SO nicely. If you read the textbook and listen in lecture this class is a breeze.
It all depends on your TA honestly. Tests are tough, but if you have a great TA, you'll be fine.
Tests are extremely difficult. Almost everyone needs extra time and the TA has to keep yelling time is up. There were two quizzes multiple choice and two midterms and a final that were all short answer. It seems like everyone is doing poorly in the class. We were told we had 2 hours for the final that turned to an hour and a half. Don't get Ali
this class is rough. heavily math based and principles of micro does not do the job for what this class entails. in class lectures barely help in trying to complete the homework. tests are nearly impossible. probably will retake this course with another professor
Loved pizzati! Enjoyed his lectures & he's one of the few good professors in the Econ department at USC. Makes intermediate macro enjoyable & is very approachable. I had to study quite a lot for the 1 midterm in the class but did very well. Final exam is just a presentation about an economic shock in a country & a 5-7 page write up about the topic
Pizzatti is incredible. There are 2 quizzes and 2 midterms, he basically goes over exactly what is going to be on each + gives practice problems. He goes over the homework the day it's due in class, so you can just write the answers there and turn it in. Really fun class, he made 2 hours go by quickly. Definitely would take a class with him again!
The quizzes are literally just the notes he does for review. Don't get intimidated by the homework. Just turn it in. Don't bother reading the textbook.
I recommend reading the chapter that will be talked about in class before going to class. It helps out with understanding the material. The tests are not that difficult if you study for them. There are normally 1 to 2 bonus questions on the tests. Pizzati always unintentionally makes the class laugh which helps keep the class alive. Great class!
Pizzati is a pretty decent teacher when he can remember where he is. Sort of an absent minded fellow, often forgets things and occasionally pauses to catch up with his own train of thought mid-lecture. TA's suck miserably but the class itself is pretty easy for an econ course.
One of my favorite economics professors, he is incredibly underrated. Tests are not difficult, homework is basically for counting participation, and he is generous with bonus credit. His lectures are based off the book, but he doesn't just read off of a powerpoint, a very application based teacher. He is also incredibly funny, highly recommended!
He's a really great teacher. His tests are exactly like the homework. I took him for 3 economics courses and did relatively well. Just study the textbook and the homework and you're fine. He always prepares you well for the tests.
Very easy class. Lectures are not mandatory. You can get by very easily from just reading the textbook. Light on homework (maybe takes 30 minutes) and you can do it during the discussion period before you turn it in. Exams are straightforward, you will know exactly what's going to be on it. If you prefer going to class, the professor explains well.
Class is supplemental to the reading, rather than the other way around. Do the readings and youll get at least a B+, put in a little more and its a pretty easy A. Pizzati is the man; everyone I know who has had him wants to take another of his classes.
He knows his stuff but lectures had very little structure which made them hard to follow. It felt like he showed up to class with no plan and just started talking about things. Not a great class regardless but his teaching style did not help.
this guy really fills out his denim jeans nicely. most of his teaching consists of drawing checkerboards in chalk and then being frustrated when he cant erase them. his words flow beautifully off his lips with the grace of a newborn butterfly, cascading the lecture hall with his glorious and sensual italian tongue-magic. 13/10
He's trying out a new online textbook this semester, which explains why things are running so inefficiently (e.g., homework problems given out a day before discussion; textbook super meandering). But it doesn't really explain why his lectures have so little to do with the exams/quizzes (and so boring), and why testing is so much of your grade.
Doesnt seem like he had a plan when it comes to teaching just gets up there and talks about whatever is on his mind. Class lectures were all over the place, not very clear or thorough. He is nice and a very smart man but isnt the best at actually effectively teaching the material. Says midterms and quizzes will be like homework, but not always true
Terrible. Makes mistakes all the time during class when explaining material. Homeworks, quizzes and midterms are unlike anything covered in class, and he genuinely doesn't seem to care about teaching. I suppose he gets paid the same at the end of the day, so why should it matter to him if his students do well or not. Avoid like the plague.
Pizzati is one of those professors who clearly isn't at USC to teach. He ill-prepared to handle questions from the class and loses his direction during lecture. His lectures are extremely dull and often don't provide a thorough understanding of the material behind the formulas. If you aren't good at teaching yourself via textbook, don't bother.
Absolutely horrible professor. Does not care at all about teaching, obviously just doing this to put on his resume. Completely unclear with what is expected in the class and what youll get tested on. The least accommodating and unclear professor I have ever had at USC throughout 4 years. The final contained material that wasnt even in the book.
I took Pizzati's class bc I heard his class was decently easy. In all of my courses at 'SC, I have never felt so confused, unprepared, and baffled. I would read all the assigned readings and even go to office hours for both the TA/Professor. Nothing worked and both the TA and Professor were unwilling to help. Worst professor ever
Horrid professor, i took this class because it was the highest rated Econ 305 Class at the time, but as you can see how that went from the rest of the reviews this semester. No structure in his lesson plans at all, little communication about what is going on, tests were completely different than the homework assigned, mistakes always while teaching
Seems like this professor does not care at all. He's constantly getting confused mid-lecture and being corrected by students. It is almost as if he wings the lectures. Going to the lectures definitely helps, but a majority of the time is spent rambling on about subjects not relevant to the quizzes and midterms. I would avoid this professor for 395.
His classes aren't structured at all. Although it's clear that he is knowledgeable it's difficult to take his lectures seriously, especially when his phone rings twice every class. Would not recommend taking his class.
Class itself is straight forward and super easy. Stopped going to lectures, unless to hand in HW or for midterms, quizzes, etc., after the first month and just self studied the entirety of the course. A lot of cramming, but I like econ so this class was pretty simple.
Pizzatis 317 is super easy and tests are straight forward, similar to hw. As long as you know and understand formulas, you can get an easy A. Take 317 with him!
Worst professor ever. Highly disorganized lectures- makes no ppt, follows no script or whatsoever. Goes on irrelevant tangents for the entire class and ends up covering nothing at all. Thus, this class primarily consisted of self studying and cramming with TAs. Problem sets were useless as he gave us all the answers even before the deadline. AVOID!
Not a bad choice for 303. His tests are just like the homework, and he basically goes over all the problem sets in class. Put in a little effort and you should get a good grade in his class.
If you really want to learn about economics, do not take this class. Lodovico is definitely a very smart man, but does not teach. His lectures are very hard to understand. However, if you want an easy class I would highly recommend! The tests are based entirely on textbook chapters, so attendance is not mandatory and exams are easy.
Pizzati is by far the worst Econ professor I've had at USC. His lectures lack structure and he'll often go through homework during class for the ENTIRE period, without actually managing to explain the theory behind it. Makes mistakes often while teaching and seems to resent having to go through steps in order to explain a problem fully to students.
I took Pizzati for 305 this semester, and although his lectures can be slow, dry, and sometimes unstructured, I found that if you did the homework and understood it, you could easily Ace the midterms/quizzes. Which made this class pretty easy if you followed the material.
AVOID. By far the worst professor I have had. Lectures aren't "dry" like some ratings have described. They are complete nonsense and do not prepare you for exams and quizzes. Self-teaching is your only hope for this class, but even then, he'll put detail into exams that he never taught or explained. Failed exams due to this.
Pizzati is kind of a meme professor in ECON at USC but overall good guy. 317 class isn't too bad. Boring lectures, easy HW, somewhat difficult quizzes, midterms okay, final paper is easy. Pizzati is a very unorganized person so sometimes lectures feel like a waste. He can be vague on what to expect which gets annoying. Go to SI sessions so helpful!
Lectures are literally useless. The tests pertain to literally nothing that was said in class. I learned more from google and my one day a week fifty minute SI sessions than from him. Skip. Run. Get out. Save yourself.
Don't go to the lecture. Even if you go, you won't be with him mentally. Professor Pizzati's lecture is illogical and boring, even if he is a nice person. I study on myself by reading the textbook and listen to Ta's lecture. This class is a total waste of time and money. I get to learn very few things in the end.
His tests are pretty easy and his lectures are helpful. Class is very chill and he explains things well.
It is pretty easy to get an A in the class. He is straightforward and does not confuse you. his tests are the same as his practice problems and he always discusses them in class. dont need the textbook he has his own question bank.
Professor Pizzati was a very straightforward teacher who was very helpful in class and in his office hours. If you go to lectures you will get a plethora of questions that will most likely pop up on quizzes and tests and if you don't the discussions will. Great teacher, great class, and I hope to get him for later econ classes.
Definitely not a great lecturer. He clearly does not have a plan, but if you go to discussion sections and skim the textbook, you should be fine.
An awful Professor whose dry lectures and difficult tests make you work hard to get a C. The only good thing about this class comes at the end when you do a stats paper/project that is pretty useful and interesting. Other than that though, if you are looking for a good stats professor, stay clear of Professor Pizzati.
he really sucks. DON'T take him. always showed up late to class and seemed like he really didn't care. also very unorganized and can't teach for his life
Pizzati's tests aren't terrible if you do the homework, and if you're good at self studying and don't care much about actually learning intermediate micro, then you'll do just fine in this class. He has very boring lectures, and honestly spends most of the time going over HW problems. Read the textbook + do the hw tho and you'll b fine
Pizzati is a genuinely nice guy. Class is easy if you study for the sake of acing the tests, but you learn nothing at the end of the day. Pizzati spends most of his time trying to go over the homework, and being stuck in a loop of errors. Lectures have no structure, no slides, no notes. Just Pizzati trying to wing it everyday.
great professor knows a ton about economics, a lot of real world experience
I dont understand why Pizzati has such a low rating (he should be between 4-5). I will admit his lectures can be dry sometimes but he is friendly, brilliant, accessible, and always makes sure you understand everything. His exams are tailored to class material, so easy to prepare for. My TA definitely helped, but Pizzati is a great choice.
He's ok. The lectures are pretty hard to follow but if you study the textbook/HW questions you should be able to do fine. Just make sure you know the formulas. Also, SI is super helpful. I would not have been able to do well without it.
I had Pizzati for both 305 and 303. He makes his classes ridiculously easy. Weekly homework but the quizzes and test questions are EXACTLY like the homework. He never surprises you on the assessments. He's also an interesting guy (read his wikipedia article) and I enjoyed both classes.
Pizzati is kinda meh. Lectures are boring and tests can get pretty confusing and hard. Textbook doesn't help at all, he goes pretty off script and tests are based off lecture, not book
Lectures are very confusing. Just talks and talks without a sense of where the class is and Assumes you know the material inside and out during class. does not stop to address difficult concepts. Quizzes and tests are not surprising though, studying from the book will get you by - don't count on lectures to really understand the content.
He's solid. Lectures can be confusing sometimes. The tests aren't too hard, and if you study he usually doesn't throw any huge curveballs on the tests. Not the best but not the worst, definitely have had worse Macro professors.
Lodovido? No bene. Man would try to solve a problem for 20 minutes before a student would point out that he was completely wrong. Then, once zoom classes started, he would write incredibly small with terrible handwriting and could not function at all in terms of using the program. The TA was also not helpful and quite honestly rude. P/NP cuz Covid
I can't believe I even have to write this review. Out of my 15+ econ courses, he was the only prof to never talk about what the test would be on or any information on the exams. The exam is in two days and we were given literally nothing. never any emails for the midterms that give us insight, and we never review the tests the class before.
Do not take 305 with Pizzati. Dude offered no concrete examples for problems that would appear on the exam. He'd build the test the night before so you have no idea how to prepare. We never review anything, and his test is full of advanced problems that aren't even executed correctly in lecture, nor are they given on homework assignments. Joke.
Solid professor for econ 317. He has a clear grading criteria and the material covered in the homework and lectures are very similar to what appears on the quizzes and midterm. Only critique is material is a bit confusing to understand and hard to engage during class. Attending SI and reading the textbook can really help with the confusion!
Had Pizzati for ECON303 & 317. Both really easy, never had to do any textbook readings or studying (besides HW). Spends most of class going over practice problems, and HW problems are basically the same as in class problems. Tests are basically HW questions with changed numbers. If you want to learn theory you have to read the textbook yourself.
Hes a nice guy but his lectures/class can be really disorganizedclearly hes a capable economist but teaching material is not his strong suit. The class was relatively easy overall though; most of the test questions were very similar to the examples he did in class and the hw was also manageable.
Horrible class. Would recommend taking literally anyone else. I don't think I have ever cried so much in class. Have fun doing Excel in class for it to not be allowed on exams, leaving you wondering how to do anything by hand. Lectures taught me nothing and the book barely did. Seriously, what a horrible class.
Horrible teaching style. Never tells you what is going to be on the tests or midterms so you are always left in dark, not knowing what to study for. Although the course has a light workload, when it comes down to the exams, it is unlike anything he has talked about in class. Do not recommend, especially if this is your first semester.
I am so annoyed with Pizzati - he teaches us on excel and then expects us to take his quizzes and midterms on paper. This class is genuinely not easy, especially the second half when it comes to hypothesis testing and regression and taking it with Pizzati makes it 10x worse. Not that USC has a better alternative but just be prepared.
Not a very good lecturer and honestly didn't even need to be there. The TAs are what makes this class doable and they do all the work. You just have to teach yourself in this class and then ask the TAs for help during discussions. Take another professor.
Pretty boring but reasonably easy--it's basically AP stats but with a few other things + some economics applications. Test and quiz questions are very similar to hw questions and lecture examples so you're pretty much fine if you review them.
Tests are very similar to HW, and lectures were extremely boring. There is no need to attend the lecture because you can learn almost everything from the textbook. You only need to memorize formulas and know how to solve HW questions to earn good grade. If you want an easy A, take this class.
He's a horrible lecturer. He picks a random example from the chapter we're on and spends the whole class on it, making several mistakes and often rushes through concepts. You have to read the textbook to pass. Wording on tests can be weird. TAs are a good resource, but they're not great either. Good class and easy if you're a self-learner.
This class was hard during the later half. First half is memorizing formulas. He was kind enough to bump the one exam I failed up to a 50 so could pass without acing the final. T.A was really helpful with the final project. Do the HW on time make flashcards and email the ta about confusion to make it light on yourself. Exams are Not cumulative.
The class itself is not super hard as long as you can remember the necessary formulas, but many of the lectures are quite dry, and the professor often demonstrates solving problems in Excel even though most of the exams were pen and paper, which was somewhat frustrating at times. Overall nice guy, and not a bad pick for ECON317.
Taking this maymester class with professor Pizzati in Belgium was an amazing opportunity to learn from people who are very knowledgeable in the field of European integration. The lectures helped me understand how the EU works, it's history, and the benefits that it has. The field trips to Luxembourg and Germany changed my perspective of the EU.
The best Econ prof I had in USC. Although sometimes he spoke fast in the lecture, he tells you what exactly will be like on the test. Assignment are very easy and automatically get 100% if you submit it. If you want to take 305, definitely choose prof Pizzati!
Prof. Pizzati lectures straight from the textbook, so if you don't understand the lecture you can always read the chapter. Lecture is very similar to the homework which is very similar to the tests, which is great. Class is pretty easy. There are a lot of tests and quizzes (none cumulative) and a paper.
An absolutely awful professor. Never talks about the material you need to know for the quizzes and exams, and even the textbook doesn't help. The entire class is math based, with the textbook being pretty much all conceptual stuff. Even the TAs are awful, so you're on your own. If you can take the other professor for this class, do it.
I get why so many people have mixed feelings about him. But to be honest, if you have a good TA, you should be good. Prof Pizzati isn't the most clear while in lecture and bases a lot of his exams (and lectures) on the textbook. I'd say if you can get previous exams, you're golden.
Sometimes his explanations were unclear, but Quizzes, Midterms, and finals were straightforward. Take notes, make sure you understand your homework and you will be fine. If possible, choose a caring TA and and A guaranteed.
Fairly easy class. Homework was worth 10%. There were 2 quizzes worth 10% each, 2 tests worth 20% each, and a 30% final. Professor Pizzati was a decent lecturer, however he tended to go off track often during lectures. The class was surprisingly entertaining and funny. For most exams, the exact format was given in advance, which made them easy.
I strongly recommend this professor. Very clear lecture. Exams are very similar to the hw questions. Gives clear comments on the paper and usually gives full credit for the final paper. Be sure to attend the SI session, the SI leader is very helpful. You don't have to show up in his class and still can get an A.
This maymester class was one of the best classes at USC! This should be an easy class if you have taken intermediate micro and macro. Otherwise you might struggle a little bit since the professor assumed you had taken both (even though they were not listed as pre-reqs). Professor Pizzati was a fun person but not the clearest lecturer.
Quite possibly the worst communication out of any professor within the department. Class heavily relies on learning from the SI rather than the lectures. Shows up late to class without explanation.
Pretty decent choice for 305. Although his lectures usually don't make sense and he goes off topic, everything is in the textbook, and the homework is exactly the same as the midterms (easy!) He pulled a bit of a curveball on the second quiz but he recognized that after the average was a 60. Curves at the end of semester. TA is helpful with review.
Decent overall. Lectures often overcomplicate the material, but everything is in the textbook anyway and the SI is great. The only difference between quizzes and midterms is the weighting - there are 2 of each. Usually gives past test examples, so you kind of know what to expect. HW graded for completion. He's just boring and disorganized.
An OK lecturer. Be prepared to study a lot on your own though. Reading the textbook and going to SI sessions or at least completing the worksheets are crucial to understanding the material. Graded on 2 quizzes, 2 midterms, 1 paper, 1 final, and weekly homework. One TA graded two sections (took the midterm on 11/9 but still don't know my grade..)
The best way to learn is read the textbook. Homework graded on completion. Have both the final paper and exam.
Unless you must, DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. He teaches about one of the simplest concepts and then tests on 7 concepts never taught. He includes test questions with the intention to trick you instead of teach.
bro cannot teach to save his life but luckily the material isn't very hard and the SI sessions are gold , you don't even really need to go to class if you just go to SI sessions especially if u have nakul malik
I wanted to be fair and write this review once I've finished with the course however, as the person before me said, its ridiculous he's testing us on topics that he hardly went over or squeezed in for the midterm. His lectures aren't the best and I end up doing self studying or learning way more from my TA.
Possibly the worst professor I have ever had. He lectures about one topic and the midterms/quizzes have a ton of things we never went over on them. In addition, he never responds to emails and rarely gets to class on time. In addition, the TAs are also terrible. They grade extremely hard and show up late to teach.
His lectures almost feel pointless to attend because they are completely disorganized and unstructured. He is horrible at explaining even the most simple concepts. He is also often unable to tell the class what will be on tests. Most learning comes from reading the textbook and doing the homework.
If you read the textbook and do the homework (which is like an hour a week max) you will get an A. Going/paying attention to the lectures is irrelevant to your grade in the class. You can pay close attention to every word he says but if you don't understand the homework you will fail everything. Overall easy
Take this class if you want an easy class with little workload. Homework takes maybe an hour a week, grade is evenly split out between midterms, quizzes, a final paper that he probably won't read, and a final. Tests and quizzes are not cumulative. However if you want to learn something, take another professor.
If you weren't following material from day 1, you are screwed. He hops topics a lot in lectures which made it difficult for everyone to comprehend certain subjects. Homework was so unclear, never sure of a due date and they are always at random times. My TA wasn't helpful but if you get a good one, you should be a little bit better.
Lacks empathy, extremely avoidant and hard to reach. Lectures are so hard to follow. Had better luck teaching myself the content. Easy class, extremely difficult professor
Lectures are unhelpful plus he sometimes goes off tangent. Homework is graded on completion. Just read the textbook and learn how to do the homework problems, as the exams will basically be like the homework
He did not seem to care. I would suggest against taking this course.
Professor Pizzati's lectures are very unclear. It is difficult to communicate with him and he does not give any preparations for exams or quizzes. The one great thing is that SI lectures are extremely helpful and provide all the material needed to do well on exams. Honestly, lectures don;t need to be attended if you go to SI instead.
easy A. take him.
Was an extremely stressful course, with Professor and TAs who did not care about their students success enough to do diligent work. Told this course would be curved, then it was not. Most of my friends dropped midway through the semester.
The professor informed the class that everything would be curved. This did not happen. The exams were not too difficult but still not able to do well without a curve. It was a very stressful class and the syllabus was changing every few weeks as well so things changed without students knowing.
Was told that the class was going to be curved but a curve was not given. Exams were very difficult and homeworks were the only parts of the class that correlated to the exams. Highly suggest not taking the class unless it is confirmed in the syllabus that a curve will be added.
Can not teach if his life depended on it.
Never went to class. His lectures are mostly yap. The exams and quizzes are really easy if you do the hw. don't take this class if youre tryna have a good learning experience, take it if you need an easy A.
Hands down the worst professor I've ever encountered at USC. Lost my midterm but claimed it was my fault and refused to accommodate. Had to drop the class in April despite having all B+s and As in every single other assignment/quiz in the class. Horrible person in general and lacked any concept of empathy.
One of the best professors in the Econ department. Lively instructor and great to talk to outside of the classroom as well. Lots of field trips
If you are reading this, you probably realize that this professor is your only option this semester (just like me). To pass this class READ THE BOOK. The earlier you start the better chance you have to understand the topics. His lectures are horrible and make everything more confusing. Midterms are challenging and require a lot of understanding.
He doesn't even know what he wants soemtimes. The whole class could be taught through a text book. If you show up to the lectures, the class will become more confusing. Also, this class can screw you over on the midterms if you don't MEMORIZE every single equation that is taught. He does not curve nor does he round up grades
Pizzati gets way more hate than he deserves imo. He's a pretty chill guy and I can def agree many of his lectures can be more straightforward, but I like him for the fact that he's fair and transparent. HW is representative of exams. S/o to Nakul Malik, the SI for my class, what a charismatic and godsend of a guy; w/o him, many would've struggled.
In the second half, homework assignments had little to do with the chapter. Then the tests had little to do with the homework assignments. His teaching skills are awful. Your professor is the book. Thankfully the first half of this class was normal, with homework related to the book, and tests related to HW.
TBH I feel it's a shame to pay more than $8,000 for this course. He doesn't seem to care about the students at all—no lecture notes, no slides, and the TA did most of the work for him in this course. If you're considering taking his course, make sure to ask yourself if you're good at self-studying first!!!!!
Very half-ass teacher. The TA and SI combined did at least 5x the amount of work Pizzati does. That said, his exams are comparable to what the TA and SI assigns for us so we can expect more of what the exams difficulty is. Nonetheless, this class required many hours of self-studying.
Do not take if you want to enjoy learning. I would often read the chapters before going to class and his lectures would make no sense. Very unaccommodating, writes on a whiteboard so there are no slides posted. Took AP Micro/Macro in high school and this class was unnecessarily hard to learn from.
Professor Pizzati is very educated on the subject, but not a good teacher. There are literally NO SLIDES, basically just assigns homework from the textbook. No study guides for midterm or final. writes with a dried out marker on a whiteboard, so many formulas no formula sheet, my TA was awesome and there to help but wouldn't recommend this class.
Honestly, this class was very easy: all you have to do is show up, take notes, and do the textbook problems for practice. Its not unnecessarily hard, I took the 8am section and didnt show up a quarter of the time. I ended up with an A simply because the exams were exactly what the homework. Easy class, but not a super interesting teacher. 8/10
Chill guy. Exams were simple and quite similar to homework, sometimes even easier. Decent lecturer, enough that I didnt feel need to go to SI but heard good things abt them. His 317 includes a paper + presentation but not everyone had to present due to time constraints. Overall, pretty straightforward class.
He puts literally no effort into this class. No slides, no formal lecture, just him writing a few equations and graphs on the board and expecting us to memorize it like that. It's a pretty straightforward class you just need to do all the work by yourself. SI sessions really help, definitely recommend.
Pizzati is lowk over hated. Not the best professor but not the worst. He doesn't really give good lectures and honestly doesn't give the clearest information about his exams, but if you read the textbook you should be fine. Tests and quizzes are pretty similar to homework. At the end of the day, he's just a chill dude who puts minimal effort in...
While the professor's teaching style is tricky, unstuck study and the free textbook can really help. Stay engaged, and you can still do well despite the course challenges.
The class is only graded on your midterms, final, and two quizzes. The HW barely counts for anything. His lectures were all over the place, no presentations/slides, just him talking about what he remembers. Totally inaccessible, emailed him multiple times and never got a response. No curve. Says the HW is exactly like the exam and it never was.
I get what the other reviews are saying about dull lectures. But, I attended every lecture, paid attention, took notes and it was all consistent with most of the midterms/quizzes. You'll have to self-study using the textbook to fully understand the concepts but he gives you the steps and instructions to do well, given in lecture and HW.
As long as you keep up and really understand how to do the homeworks, you'll get a good grade. Tho, homework takes a lot of time to fully understand the step-by-step and conceptual ideas. You don't need to go to lecture, but make sure u go to SI Nakul Malik bc he makes the content very digestible. He was the ECON 317 teacher more than Pizzati was.
No slides, nothing on brightspace, just old school lectures. He doesn't do a bad job teaching it but it's easy to lose track, he also will answer your questions. Cool guy if you speak to him. Sometimes he'd pose questions to the class & make rebuttals to get us thinking. Tests were just like the HW (except 1 surprise), do each 2x and you're good.
Pizzati doesn't seem to like teaching but he's a cool guy. I think I'd rather get lunch with him than take his class. The tests are basically identical to the SI practice sheets and are fairly easy. You just won't learn much in class.
This is the only ECON class i have to take for my major, thankfully. By the first lecture, i knew i would have to do a ton of self studying. In lecture, he scribbles pratice problems on the board. its very easy to get confused. He often confuses himself. Tests are straight foward but TA's can be picky. Most dropped early on, avoid if you can!
I kind of understand the ratings. He does not post ANY notes, all of the lectures are done on chalkboards. I barely went to lectures unless I had a quiz or was reviewing. Just be prepared to self-study because even if you go to every lecture, you'll be lost. The textbook is really good at explaining things.
He's alright. Probably a nice guy but not really a great lecturer. Was always super monotone and would explain concepts in difficult-to-understand ways. Class and exams were mostly based on the homework questions. I would try to get another professor if you're actually interested in learning.
Though a delightful bloke to speak to, Pizzati isn't the best professor. Rambling, using chalk boards, being disorganized, and never replying to emails are just some of the many flaws with him. Avoid taking Pizzati if you can - you'd rather grab a cup of coffee with him than take his class!
Pizzati is a nice guy but not the most organized professor. Lectures are board-heavy with little structure, and the TA handles most tasks. That said, quizzes and exams closely mirror the homework—so if you keep up with that and read the textbook, you'll do fine.
Pizzati is a very nice guy, and sees to be very knowledgeable about economics. However, his abilities as a teacher are not great - he uses a chalkboard, rambles, loves to hear himself talk, and doesn't put in any effort. Avoid Pizzati if you actually want to learn!
****FOR MUIN MAJORS: AVOID AT ALL COSTS**** can't explain how much i suffered in this class. its pretty comical. prof uses a chalkboard. what century are we in?! Just do the Hw, watch youtube vids, and try your best on the test. its not extremely hard content, just frustrating that we had to teach it to ourselves. Good luck soldiers
He doesn't use PowerPoints, he simply writes on the chalkboard, but his handwriting is unreadable. Tests were not too difficult, and there are many of them, but most of my tests were graded incorrectly at first, and I had to fight to improve my grades.
I understand the reviews but I think they're a bit too harsh. He's a sweet, chill guy and he does tell you what you have to know, even though it is pretty much right from the textbook. But that also makes it easy to review with the textbook and know what to expect on exams. Not the most informative but not bad.
Pizatti is not bad, he just can't teach... Go to SI. Please god someone get this handsome man an iPad
Lectures are difficult to take notes on sometimes, but he answers questions extremely well. Tests are similar to homework.
Pizzati kind of just shows up and explains things using a chalkboard, no slides or anything. Weekly homework, 2 quizzes, 2 midterms, and a final. Exams are usually pretty similar to homeworks. Had to self teach a lot, but the class follows textbook closely. If you put effort into understanding the conceptual stuff you should be fine.
honestly this guy cannot lecture for his life. going to class is a waste of time, just read the textbook. on class content: i took this as a freshman thinking bc a lot of the class is the same as ap stats it'll be easy -- do not be fooled! there are no calculator computations (1propztest and the like) or formula sheets. get ready to study
Doesn't care about teaching or his students. He's lazy about his lectures, posts nothing on Brightspace, and barely knows what's going on. Good class for people who want to skip lecture and self-teach. Exams are similar to the homework problems. Otherwise, he's not worth USC tuition and I'm appalled that USC could hire such an unprofessional guy
First half of the class is OK, because he does reviews for quizzes and what you need to know. The second half of the class is laughably difficult, including the final, because it was extremely unclear what questions we would be asked. Teaches concepts, sometimes forgets some, but rarely shows us how up apply them. Not a great professor all around.
First half semester was ok, but the second half was a disaster. He skipped a bunch of content and wasn't clear on whether those would be on the final, simply because he couldn't finish the course. The last lecture was like 45 minutes and he went through a whole freaking chapter with no one understanding what he was saying. TAs are very supportive!
If you want to self-study or have taken econ before, you will be fine. During lectures he rambles on a lot, and will not be super clear of what is on the test. During the first half of the semester, we would do review for the quiz/midterm, but he has rushed the 2nd half of the course so we do not have a review class. There is no curve on any test.
dude just writes on the whiteboard all class and was literally telling me the wrong stuff when I emailed him to ask a question. When I tried to clarify he just didn't respond. I also needed to go to office hours (during the scheduled time mind you) but somehow he was "in another meeting".
Graded on 10 HW, 2 quizzes, 2 midterms, 1 final. Lectures were kinda meh but recorded. The final had a few quesitons very very similar to the hw. For an 8 am class not worth it to go just read the textbook. TA WERE ABSOLTELY GOATED, GO TO DISUCSSION AND THEY WILL HELP YOU
The textbook is your best friend... don't even bother going to the lectures you'll learn nothing.
