The lack of communication that he has with his class is truly astounding. I took his class during the COVID-19 outbreak, and there was absolutely no communication with the class. No weekly updates and not even an email to discuss the format of the exam, which no one knew until the day of the test. He does not seem to care at all.
The lectures were pretty short, had to watch on 1.5x speed though. The homeworks were long and tedious and had to teach myself some stuff to do them. He was good at communicating with the class, seemed understanding about issues. His problem was just too much work, and not teaching all of the concepts I felt were needed for homework. Long tests too
Most miserable class I have taken at state. No communication, punitive, arbitrary, sadistic grading, have to learn how to use R, only accepts work in PDF format, gives 4 hours to complete 5 hour tests, class is 50% data entry 50% figuring out where to put parenthesis in R, and his excuse for all this is "it's an applied class." AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
This class was fine. As long as you keep up with the lectures and try you'll get a passing grade. The amount of work seemed to be pretty standard and Dr. Opperman was pretty helpful if you needed any help.
Lecture videos are clear, but there are many long homework sets. This class is math-heavy, but the theory is easy. Be ready to spend 3 hrs minimum on homework each week. Exams are very long but are open book and notes. There are 2 4-hr midterms, and a 5-hr final. You will use most of that time. Prof is very receptive in office hours and by email.
He drastically changed his online format after fall 2020. No more R, but a graphing calculator is needed for some computations. No tests but had two essays, for the midterm and final. His lectures were short while his examples are helpful for hw. No idea if it'll be the same format in fall 2021. Had a textbook but used barely.
Took this class in Fall 2019. I studied like crazy and still couldn't pass a test. The homework and tests were both extremely hard and his lectures went so fast you couldn't keep up. Also takes forever to grade tests.
Dr. Opperman does not have very much experience teaching in an in-person capacity - this is why I think he has lots of trouble doing so effectively. Between the two sections he teaches this semester, the midterm averages were a 62 and a 72 which both speak for themselves. He gives no material to prepare for tests, insisting "read the *whole* book"
I took this class in fall 2020. Dr. Opperman gave examples during class that clearly explain theorems and definitions. The homework was more challenging than the examples in lectures, but allowed you to truly understand the material. Tests were hard, but fair. I enjoyed his teaching style a lot and recommend him as a professor!
Opperman gives lots of enthusiasm and explanations in his SAS course, despite it being an annoying language to learn. If you do the classwork (example SAS code with solutions provided) there are good tips that help with HW and make it quick to do. He is super available outside of class for help on HW/quiz. HW grading is clearly laid out in rubric.
Opperman is knowledgable and goofy, but has ridiculous expectations of students. For a 3 credit course, on average, I spent over 20 hours a week working on the homework. On homework, there is stuff we haven't learned to make the code work, and yet he claims we would have learned everything to make it work. Other classes suffer. Lectures too slow.
He seems to set up his lectures well, but he is a "mansplainer". He is condescending towards people who ask questions. His tests are nothing like the assignments or anything he teaches. The average is always a D- and he doesn't always curve. The homework weight is very high. The weekly homework is very time-consuming and difficult.
Opperman is easy to follow and provides encompassing lectures in class. Overall, he's a pretty engaging lecturer and ends each class with an example problem that is graded for participation. Some of the homeworks were hard, but he was always available for questions. The biggest issue I had was tests being too long for the allotted time.
Homework is very helpful to your grade but rarely found online. He grades the first 2 exams very linant and only takes off points the first time you get something wrong. Gives out physical practice problems in class after most lessons and lets you ask questions. Very cool dude
Professor is very condescending. Grading is tough and prudent. Class covers very basic concepts and I would recommend something more applicable. Would only suggests this class to business/supply chain students
Gosh I have a love hate relationship with this man. His lectures are somewhat interesting as he is passionate about what he teaches, but he gives AWFUL prep for exams, which leads to low class averages due to exams being long and hard. And then when the entire class failed (not kidding the median was a 50), he blames it on us...
I love Dr. Opperman. I wouldn't have wanted this class with anyone else. He literally has a baby and still makes himself available to you as often as possible to help out. Patient and super kind, wants everyone to feel welcome. This class is also so fun if you enjoy stats because it introduces you to so many important things. He does a great job.
Dr. Opperman is a very good lecturer. Always had lots of examples and practice problems. Attendance was mandatory and I never read the textbook. He can be a little condescending when answering questions during class. Exam 1 was graded very harshly but the TA was the one that graded not him. Exam 2 scores were much higher. Also Dr. Opperman is funny
Good professor, good lectures, good homework and quizzes, horrible exams.
Exams look nothing like any of the homework, lectures, or quizzes assigned. Gives no real preparation and talks down to you when you go try to get help from him.
He will not teach you the things you need to know to be able to assignments and he gate keeps information from you when you try to ask him for help on those topics.
Midterm and final are hard. Does not give good study guides.
Doesn't record lectures, refuses to provide lecture material, little to no preparation for midterms and final. Overall it sorta feels like he doesn't want you to succeed...
Goes out of his way to make the course harder than it should be by not recording lectures or providing helpful practice problems. Lacks empathy when it comes to students and being understanding of extenuating circumstances. Lectures are passionate, but unhelpful since exam material is WAY harder.
He does not record his lectures. This makes it difficult to go back and review the lecture material. The first exam is fairly straightforward. The second exam and final can be difficult. He isn't as bad as people make him out to be, but the lectures can be boring. The grading for HW is super tough.
Overall, bad experience. He is helpful in emails, but he doesn't record lectures, grades harshly, not understanding at all. Additionally, he sips from a jug the whole lecture, bites his lip, very condescending. Canceled final review, gave NO final exam prep (told us to Google problems), and changed the homework grading rubric without telling us.
He's sometimes bad at answering questions because he doesn't listen to the questions that people are asking. But he is very precise about his wording which is nice. I would not suggest taking a class with him because the material is made more difficult by his lectures. Only take it if you're craving a stressful time.
He is clearly passionate about statistics, but the way he set up his course was frustrating. His lectures are different from the homework and tests and there are limited additional resources (he said google it.) Lectures aren't recorded, so they can't be referenced. He grades harshly and can come across as condescending when asked questions
extremely passionate about his lectures and takes time during class to create discussions about the material. very precise wording and technical speaker. hardest part of the class is his homework's, utilize office hours to succeed. tests are similar to homework's, but generally easier questions.
Opperman could be a good professor if he considered the needs of his students above what he believes they need. He doesn't record lectures, doesn't post course powerpoints, gives no exam/final preparation problems (big thing if you study by doing practice problems), and grades very very harshly. Even if you are an A student you will struggle.
Gave his class absolutely ZERO final exam preparation. NONE. No practice problems, no review session, nothing. Then made his final absolutely ridiculously difficult and tested us on material we had only every touched in lecture ONCE and some we had never heard of.
Good at answering questions, but that is the only thing he does to help. He doesn't orient the class in a way that helps students succeed, but rather what is convenient for him and what he deems best--even if it is the opposite of helpful. Even when asked if he could make any changes, he dismissed it and rationalized his unhelpful policies.
Very tough grader. Does not provide any kind of problems to prepare for exams, one student asked him for extra help, and he said “just look online for more practice problems”. Super inflexible on everything regarding deadlines or regrades. Refuses to record the lectures or share notes. I Would not recommend taking this guy ever.
unhelpful professor, doesn't give additional practice material, hard, very unfair exams that are a whole new difficulty level from the homework and in-lecture practice problems, doesn't record lectures, pretty much feels like he doesn't want students to succeed.
Terrible professor, I recommend to blacklist him from any future classes if possible. His email tag says “mental health matters” but his actions don't reflect an ounce of this and he is so inflexible. Overall, he seems to just like to talk instead of teach and he doesn't seem like he's trying to help you succeed.
Opperman is very knowledgeable, but that is the extent of his helpfulness. He is inconsiderate, rude, doesn't provide help to students, and grades irrationally harshly. The work he gives students to work on outside of class are much much harder than the problems he works through in class. Tests are VERY rough. Class average was a C.
Content was taught in an unnecessarily confusing manner, likely because he wanted students to know he has a PhD. Absolutely no test prep. Students in the same class with other professors had test averages of As, in this class the averages were Cs. Considering this semester he taught a bunch of engineering students, that should say something.
You may read these bad reviews and think you can rise above and succeed in this class. I promise you are wrong. Logan Opperman is a nice man, but that does not show at all in this course. The tests are much harder than any practice done in homework or lecture. Failing to record lectures is the largest injustice to students I have seen at NC State.
This guy is so buns. He enjoys making stats much harder than it needs to be. Class average was a C and most of the students were engineers with mathematical backgrounds. The new E section that was offered was awful. I don't know how they let this guy teach. The other 371 profs aren't great but anybody is better than this guy.
I may be biased, because I am math-guy in engineering, but Dr. Opperman was my favorite professor from this fall semester. Unfortunately, his in-depth and engaging lectures were not recorded, so attendance was basically mandatory. He really enjoys when students talk with him during a lecture, and you can really tell the man loves statistics.
Every question is graded off of endless, unlisted grading criteria. He wants everything written his way down to the parenthesis and if you do not include a single thing he will take off up to 80% for everything. I got every single question right on a homework and almost failed because of things like writing percentages instead of decimal.
Dr. Opperman's a cool guy and the content is very tough, but his teaching style is terrible. He does not record lectures, homework feel almost impossible, exams were not too bad except the final. If you're ECE and you have to take the E section... good luck.
His lectures do not make sense and he does not record his lectures. If you missed something while in class you will have to ask around for clarification. His tests are hard after test 1.
Homeworks are hell and the TA isjust as bad, is extremely picky about grading criteria. Most of the class averages around D's and C's and it's because of the incredibly hard tests. Avoid if possible, and don't take the E section.
Horrible. Enough said. Borderline impossible homeworks given the resources given to us in class, very particular about notation to the point it is actually concerning.
This class is designed to be as difficult as possible, a barrier in your journey through ECE. I spoke with a senior in the class, in his last semester of NC State ECE, he said this was the most needlessly difficult course in his entire journey. He is extremely particular about grading. You can lose the majority of points even with a correct answer.
By far one of the worst professors at NCSU. Literally doesn't care about students. I also was in the E section for this class and it was made harder for no reason. Don't take his class please take the other professor.
Absolutely awful. Please if you value your time and GPA do not take this course. take the non E section or anything without Opperman. Please.
Logan Opperman will nit pick every opportunity to harm your grade in every Exam and homework. The homework's are needlessly difficult and the course has a heavy sense of artificial difficulty. The definition of a weedout. Avoid Opperman and his E section.
Literally the worst professor I have taken at a university. This feels like high school with how stingy he is with showing your work and how unclear he is with conceptual questions. Dont get me started on the mind numbingly hard homework.
Easily the worst professor in the ECE department. Makes the class way harder than it actually should.
I am now hearing impaired because of this man, and I don't mean that lightly. He practically yells in class and triggers my fight or flight instinct and trust me you will want to run.
#gpabomber #prayhimaway
peculiar... curious.... what a man...
take calculus, statistics, AI, and random other bs to make a hellish suprise.
This class felt like it was designed to make students fail. Professor Opperman is extremely strict when grading and doesn't allow much room for minor errors. Homework problems are far more difficult than the lectures prepare you for. Definitely one of the most discouraging professors I've had
Opperman's teaching style creates a hostile learning environment. He grades with zero leniency, even for tiny mistakes, and the assignments are built to overwhelm rather than educate. It's hard to see the purpose of this course beyond pushing people out of the program.
Worst professor I have had at NC State by far. Previous grade distributions are awful (check Gradient) and homework is very difficult. He grades with ZERO leniency. The E(CE) section is the hardest class I have taken at NCSU, and the only class I'll fail. Transfer the credit from another school. You won't be the one who does better than his rating.
Horrific teacher, not really a lot to be said.
Please, I implore you, do anything to avoid this course. Opperman will take your GPA and bomb it.
RUN please just dont do it if you want to continue in ECE dont do it
Logan Opperman is generally a good guy; however, his tests and homework are indescribably hard. Each homework takes upwards of 8 hours, mind you OPEN notes (i.e. the internet). The tests are achievable, but you may find it extremely hard to hit that A mark due to hyper-specific multiple-choice questions. He isn't "buns," but his assignments are.
I don't care if you're religious or not, but you need to pick religion and start praying if you're gonna take this class.
Logan Opperman is someone I don't recommend to anyone. This entire course was just so confusing. There was no such thing as "Communication" in this class, and not to mention that this class cuts out every other class due to the amount of homework there was. There is no reason for this class to be this heavy in paper work.
He is extremely passionate about statistics and expects you to be too. Opperman is not at all a bad person, but his course is evil and absurdly difficult, not to mention the homework is near impossible. If you are reading this thinking you're an exception and that you can rise above and conquer... Good Luck! ... I promise you that you are wrong
I dropped 2 weeks in. He seemed nice. That's the only good. He had weekly quizzes which sucked. That's the reason I dropped him. His lectures seemed good, but I have heard people spending A LOT of time on HWs. The HWs were insanely advanced compared to ANYTHING he taught during lecture. I will be trying to take this class with anybody but this guy.
Professor Opperman seems like a good guy which is why I didn't want to write this, but I would highly recommend not taking this class. The weekly quizzes are pretty fair, the HW is tough, and the tests are very tough (most of your grade). It seemed as though I didn't have enough time to complete the tests, and they were graded harshly.
I do truly like Mr. Opperman a lot as a professor, and I think the general perception of him is somewhat unjust. However, I cannot argue with what most others say, which is that his class is very hard. His lectures are easy to follow along and to learn from, but when it comes time for the homework and exams, it is very difficult to score well.
Horrific final, put stuff on the final that we barely covered a day or 2 before(it's worth 30% and can truly make or break your grade). No curves either.
DO NOT TAKE OPPERMAN Completely ineffective teacher. Always being rude to people asking for help on the tests, which are graded brutally, and cover content far more difficult than what he lectures on. The quizzes, homework, and tests, all suffer from the same issue where none of them seem to have anything to do with each other and are herculean.
He really created a nuclear bomb of a final which is worth 30% of our grade. He really lives up to his name, do NOT take this class.
gpa terrorist
Dr. Opperman is actually a very good lecturer who is passionate about the class and easy to pay attention to, but ST 371 is a very difficult class and it is hard to do well on his exams. The homework's are time consuming and are graded harshly. There are weekly quizzes that are reasonable. I thought he was a decent teacher.
Opperman clearly loves stats and teaching in general. Generally was nice nice and helpful prof. The hw were full of “reach questions” and were only possible to get if you go to office hours. Also, the harshness of the grading was over the top. Opperman's class work and content wise was solid, but how the class is graded needs to be restructured.
Hands down, the hardest class I have taken yet at State. Tests were incredibly hard. Doesn't show compassion for students. Thought I could deal with a hard professor, but I was so wrong. Very picky about how you solve the problem. Even if you got the problem correct, you would not get full credit for it bc you solved the problem a different way.
Logan “the grade point annihilator” Opperman. - Exams are often harder than anything ever taught to you and will have little to do with the practice problems provided beforehand. - You will lose points from not writing your work exactly like the key. Possibly a top 10 worst NCSU teacher, but overall nice guy, especially if you email/talk to him.
I was terrified of Opperman from the reviews. Honestly I think he's a good professor and cares about teaching. Each topic has many practice problems w/ add'l ones before exams (textbook has extra). Go to office hours BEFORE hw is due. Quizzes are reasonable. Exams can be brutal and long, but the weight shifts depending on which midterm is higher
You are better off gambling your tuition on all red than risk killing your gpa with this guy. No recorded lectures. The only source to learn in this class is attend his lectures only going through notes and maybe a few practice problems. Weekly quizzes. I hate this guys class I really do however he's a cool guy that can be somewhat condescending.
Dr. Opperman gave very good lectures and explained things very well while cracking jokes to keep things light. He was honest about all grading criteria and office hour slots. The course is difficult, so you have to pay attention and take notes to do well. There are weekly quizzes and hw's and a couple large tests. Great guy and great professor.
Professor can crack jokes and is clearly passionate about statistics however he is incapable of teaching to undergrad level students. Lectures not recorded and conceptually heavy with little to no application, Exams are harder than anything ever taught. Wait to take this course as ECE Dept has admitted this course needs to get restructured heavily.
I earned straight A's in all my 300-level ECE courses, yet I'd choose to retake every single one before taking ST371 E section with DocOp. To his credit, he's entertaining—so at least you'll laugh while your GPA takes the hit.
It's funny to see the current students complain about his class with their low grades, likely a result of the students, not the teacher. I spend maybe 1 hour studying for the tests, very clear grading if you ask; extremely clear lectures, always willing to answer questions, and does it well. Teacher cares a lot and makes the class fun. Just try.
There are no recorded lectures. There is no question problem bank to practice questions. His attitude is very condescending. His weekly quizzes cover a significant portion of content in a very fast time and isn't explained well. His homework is brutal and extremely time consuming and is super unforgiving. I don't even know how I have a B+.
Felt like I'd understand class lectures & HW, then when a quiz or test rolled around I'm reading hieroglyphics. Multiple choice questions are easy, free response not at all. Had one test where someone straight up asked me "did he even cover this?". Learn R Code, even if its only on 5 PowerPoint slides. It's on tests AND quizzes. Funny guy though.
