A terrible teacher. Old world and treats everyone like a child.
She is not a good teacher, especially for international students. i really strongly suggest you don't take her class, unless it is nesscesary to.
she seems very great, but actually she is not...she doesn't care about her students.....
For grating the Lab Report, sometimes she will deduct your marks seriously. If you are carefully enough, you can avoid that, eg : Significant Figure. In the Lecture, if you do not family with chemistry topic like orital, electronic structure, you may feel hard
lab nazi... she is really strick about everything, and everything has to be perfect inorder to be good enough for her
Just attended her lecture class and it was fine. The exams were not really hard. Studying her notes carefully will help you get an A.
Lectures were clear. She offered additional insite into things when i asked questions both in lecture and lab. She had good comments on grading i could learn from. She is anally objective on grading (A good thing). study your notes for an A.
Boring and Useless Lecture. Freakin hard exams
responsible instruction with clear presentation about the stuff. the marking scale is rather tough but tests and exams are easy.
Very helpful teacher (come to her office hours !!!) Her tests in 1A are easy, but the ones in 1B are quite hard. Study her lecture note carefully, and do homework, then you can get an A.
I think she is easy because I can get 97%, 94% midterms and I can get an A even I have 70% in final.
I'm not one of the smartest students around, but I find her lectures very clear as she works out the problems with you to the dec. place. 1B material is hard to learn, but if you read her notes and redo the problems she did in class, you WILL do well. She's my fav out of all the chem teachers.
Lamest class. The grading is unreasonable and unfair. She avoids everyone. The class is a huge mess.

Very helpful, very parient, very clear. not going too fast, just the right pace!! Getting a good grade at the beginning of the quarter is important.
I had her for Chem 1A, and I do not plan on taking her for 1B. Makes the test tricky, and grades everything like a nazi. Her husband is the head of Chemistry department, and hes even worse, even the Chemistry Department counsler told me that shess extremely hard.
She is hard, harder than her husband, probably the hardest teacher you could find on campus. However, you can really learn something if you don't mind taking very challenging exams.
Her exam is way too hard, just like her husband's, not recommended.
She is pretty hard, don't expect to pass this class if you just spend few hours studying before the exam.
I wouldn't recommend her 4 anyone who wants a teacher who is thorough in lectures. She does a basic overview on sections(very confusing)& expects you 2 understand the rest yourself! She likes 2 throw in tricky spins on her exams & isn't an easy grader. Usually her office hours never work w/student's scheds. She also plays favourites.
lets face it, this is a college level science course so of course its hard. dr. larson is strict on grading but very fair she wouldn't give you something on a test that she didn't warn you of its prescense on the test. plus I worked really hard and she recognized the effort and gave me an A. people which grade larson poorley are lazy and blame her.
Her grading was fair. She wasn't strict on details as some say, rather you get what you deserve. Personally, I think her class isn't as hard as people say. If you work for it, you get what you want. I've seen people nag about her just because they haven't done the studying that they should have.
I dont like her, she is not polite and thinks if u dont get it the first time your stupid
super unfair grading. if u gave her an impression you are an A student, your minor mistakes would be forgiven(no matter how many); otherwise, she takes points from you one by one. Leature is pretty clear and interesting.
Her class is extremely hard. But if you give her a impression that you have tried your best, she may still give you a C. My friend caught cheated, but she still gave him a chance.
extremely impolite person. If you talk to her about chem, then pretty much chance to get better grade. Seems she has a lot of favorite student. NOT FAIR ON EVERYTHING AT ALL.
The quarter was hard to get through. But you can really learn a lot from her. I would recommend her if ur majoring in chem.
Ms. Larson class is hard compared to a general ed course. I need chemistry and this is teaching me what I need to know when I transfer. She has a website that has her notes so you can review them before class or if you miss it. Her labs are long as she tries to give you as much time to do unknowns. I recommend her.
This is a pretty hard class to get an A in. Her tests are difficult, but not impossible. She is an excellent teacher and will help you out side of class. Her blog has class updates and notes available making it easy if you missed some class to catch up. I would recommend her, but your going to have to work for an A
Larson is helpful but if you aren't the best at chemistry she is pretty patronizing. I'm a 3.6 bio major and take my grades seriously but had to withdraw from her class. VERY HARD grader+hard tests. No EC, slightly scaled grading system (87% A) Just make sure to study in excess. Teach yourself the material and let her guide you what to emphasize
I dropped class after 3 weeks of attending it, because of the way she was treating me. She has this habbit not to answer my direct questions by saying "you'll see later". I had to ask my friend, who was seating next to me answers on the questions she refused to answer. We were talking silently, but Mrs Larson yelled at me in front of the whole class.
Dr. Larson is AMAZING. I hated chemistry in high school and expected this to be the hardest and worst class but she truly got me to not only understand but also like chemistry. If you go to office hours she will definitly help you. Her lectures are very helpful, do the online homework and ask for help and you will do well. She is GREAT
The worst chem teacher. Listen to the lecture worse than you just read by youself. She makes me start to hate chemistry.
Tests are extremely long, and some of the questions are just out of nowhere. Lecture is useless. She just reads whatever is on the notes(which you can print out). She doesn't answer your questions. Crazy amounts of homework, worksheets, and lab reports. Likes to take off points for unclear reasons. Likes to play favorites. I don't recommend her.
She's a great person overall, but has these weird ticks where you have to get the EXACT answer in order to get full credit, it's so annoying...she marks everything off, and the lab reports are insanely long...if you stay committed to this class and can handle this challenging course, then by all means go ahead; otherwise don't take this class
Frankly, I like this teacher. Her lecture is great. Even though it is from the text book, she summarizes the main points. Her lecutre and exam are hard, but if you understand the concept well, it is just a piece of cake. She does curve and give extra point on the final exam, midterm, and lab exam. Overall, highly recommend her.
Lecture is a bore... really hard to pay attention; she goes off-topic a LOT. Insanely hard tests (REALLY HARD) with small curves. There is small padding on grade with lab reports and hwk. LOTS of hwk and labs. Overall a nice person but a horrible lecturer; doesn't cover the material very well and confuses herself a lot.
SOOO strict! marks off so many points for stupid things... i guess you do learn a lot! but you have to be ready to work your butt off. I don't imagine she gives out many As at all.
she is a nice person but too strict. sorry don't take her chem class ..
I'm sorry but I cannot recommend her. Like everyone said she is way too strict about everything. She really needs to learn to relax and let things go. She likes to cover a lot of material in class and have very long tests(I guess take her if you like long tests). I also feel that she is inconsistent with things and tends to give a lower grade.
I personally think people are harsh on grading her. She was one of my favorite teachers this last quarter. She is a fair grader I got a B but I didnt deserve an A I slacked off towards the end.Def recommend her!
It was a really hard class. She's really nice and is willing to help you out to get the grade you want, but it's still a lot of work. Stay true to your work and keep going no matter how bad you want to quit and you'll succeed.
She's horrible. I used to love chemistry in high school. She is a horrible teacher that crushed any passion I had for chemistry.
Chemistry is my thing! or should I say it was! I don't like chemistry anymore! why? well because of this horrible "teacher"! If you have questions about the material and you are not white (specially a white boy), do NOT go to her! she makes you feel the dummiest in the universe! she gets offended all the time!she gives you 5-6 P of test in 80 min!
Larson is a very good teacher. She reads your work carefully with great attention to detail. I had to do many practice questions, and her website says to do that. She is very fair and respectful toward students. Very meticulous.
Chem 70 is a slightly expanded way of taking Chem 1A. Larson is a good teacher, so having 2 more hours of her per week helps. You'll get a few pages worth of suggestions about how to do Chem 1A. Mostly it is practice questions with other students and Larson discussing the answers. I found Chem 70 helpful.
You really need to work for the grade you want and not fall behind. She's a teacher who is willing to help you IF you come and ask her for help. Class was very interesting and engaging, but tests were hard. She's really picky with sig figs, so master that! Overall, I would recommend her. She's a great professor.
Dr Larson is very good at explaining the concepts clearly to the class. She is extremely helpful and understanding. Her lab is fun and she is always there to help and guide you through it. It is really not a hard class as long as you are willing to learn.
She is an overall happy teacher who is very understanding of her students. Really helpful and encouraging so be sure to ask her questions often. Her notes, lectures, and discussions are all pretty clear, but you will still have to put in the effort if you want to succeed. It's also a good building block for other chemistry classes.
She is really nice and helpful. Her lectures might be boring but it is quite useful to attend them because she explains quite clearly.
She is super helpful and kind. Her lectures are really clear and formatted in a way that makes you do the work and practice. Her exams were not that bad as long as you practice from her lecture notes and homework
This isn't considered an easy A class but it was decent for a community college course. I didn't really learn much and I've learned more about Gen Chem in two weeks at Cal than I did the entire quarter but I think it depends more on the student. She's willing to help if you ask for it so that was good.
The level of difficulty of this course is ridiculous! She emphasizes studying certain assignments, but on her tests brings up the complete opposite. This is not an easy C class... She is honestly too difficult. Even when your answers are right she finds a way of making them wrong.
VERY helpful, but you need to work for it. Kinda strict in the beginning but do NOT argue back in a rude way. Just listen and show that you want to learn, and she will show you the same respect. Go to her office hours! She brought treats for tests and our study group right outside her office (chocolate covered strawberries and her own tomatoes :D)
I have taken 1A and 1C with her. Most of her tests are about understanding, sometimes could be tricky, but i wont say it is hard.
Although Londa seems really strict in the beginning, she usually loosens up by the end of the quarter. She shows a similar trend with her grading. Her tests are difficult, but she gives you several grading options to make up for it. She's also a really down-to-earth woman and loves her students. Bonus: she'll bring snacks to her class too :)
She is a very cool teacher! The content of the class gets extremely complicated towards the end of the quarter, thats where it is difficult, and where you will lose the bulk of your grade. Ensure that you earn as much points as possible while the class is still easy! She will help you, but unless you master the content, you wont do well.
NOTE I was never good in chem. That said, she's extremely hard for me. She's told us how usually her class averages by the end of quarters are C's. She's sweet and kind, but does play favorites and does kinda make you feel dumb at times. Even top students agreed she takes off points for the tiny things. This class made me feel terrible about myself
I would only recommend her if you're really strong with chemistry. Not that great of a lecturer; I had to learn from the book and the STEM center (I am not strong at Chem and found the class hard). Know how to do the lecture slides for tests. She's a nice person and very smart, but not a great lecturer. Avg class grade was a C+
She is not great at teaching the material. I would have preferred it all to have been written on the board while explained. I left lecture without feeling I'd picked up much. She's friendly when talking to the class, but in person, she's not approachable. Favoritism. We aren't able to write about it here, though it's useful to know when it's there.
She did well this last quarter. The topics later in the quarter veered far from my interests, but she clearly made an effort to be there for her students. She was understanding of outside responsibilities, made efforts to talk with all students and brought healthy snacks to class every so often. The tests are not easy. You really need time to study
I went into this class thinking I was gonna fail because I'm not good at science and the reviews on this page scared me! But honestly it was not so bad. Her lecture notes really help, although material gets harder near the end. The final brought me down from an A to a B so my advice is to stay on top of it/take this class along with easier classes.
Super nice & caring professor, you can see that she really cares for this subject & her students. Her lectures are rapid and useless, save yourself that time and just study from home since she posts all her slides online. The material is pretty straight forward and her slides show everything that's needed. This class has a strong curve applied too
Dr. Larson is a great teacher! She was my Lab teacher and was much better than the lecture one. She is very clear explaining and very accessible outside class too. Also, very caring, really wanting her students to understand everything.
She is a tough grader and you lose a lot of points if you don't get the correct # of sig figs. But she is accessible and very nice/ is willing to help you. I can tell that she cares a lot about her students but her class is very fast-paced and if you fall behind you are basically screwed. She posts all of her lectures/notes online.
Professor Larson is a great professor. She is personally vested in the outcomes of her students. You can get some extra credit in the online homework. Just be sure not to be late or miss lab.
Dr. Larson is definitely a tough grader, but she is a pretty good professor in my experience. She's really helpful when asking questions and she's very sweet. I liked her a lot even though her class was kind of tough for me. You gotta make sure you come to class no more than 5 mins late though.
Her class is difficult, but it made me a stronger learner. It whipped me into academic shape for 1B/1C. Not an easy class, it will challenge you! Put in the time and the effort, you can succeed. Chem 25 was extremely easy for me, so I had a difficult transition. I got an A in 1B because of the study habits I had to develop for this class!
Taking this class currently and I am failing her course! She is a tough grader. I mean cmon she doesn't even give credit for at least trying. She is very picky in units and sig figs. She does teach a tremendous amount, but if you're ready to read presentation slides after slides go ahead. EXAMS ARE DIFFICULT. TAKES FOREVER TO GRADE THINGS!
I got As in both 1A and 1B, but Larsons class is so difficult! Im currently failing her class because of the exams. I study for 12+ hours every week and I still fail the exams. Exams have TOO many questions with not enough time and she takes off points for the smallest details on lab reports. DO NOT TAKE HER AT ALL EXPENSES!!
Worst class I have ever taken in my whole life!!! Take someone else if you can. I had to take her since no one else was teaching 1C for fall. Her tests are so unreasonable and she takes off points for incorrect number of sig figs and other small things. Class average for the first exam was a D. This class will drop your GPA so badly!!!
DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS, YOU WILL FAIL! WORST PROFESSOR TEACHING CHEM 1C. VERY TOUGH GRADER. I STUDY WEEKLY PRIOR TO EXAMS AND NOTHING HELPS SINCE THE EXAMS ARE BASED OFF DIFFERENT THINGS. NO STUDY GUIDES BUT SLIDES. DOESN'T EVEN GIVE CREDIT FOR TRYING! TAKING HER CLASS BECAUSE SHE WAS THE ONLY PROFESSOR TEACHING CHEM 1C, SADLY!
listen to the recent reviews and don't take her class at all costs!! The exams are nothing like what is on the lectures When you don't explain something her way, she will take off points THE EXAM AVERAGES ARE VERY LOW (D'S) unfortunately she's the only person teaching 1C at foothill this and next quarter
I suggest taking 1C at De Anza or something just to avoid taking this professor. Her class will ruin your GPA! I rewatch all her lectures, review the hw, watch YouTube vids, do book problems, and I still do poorly on her tests!!!! I study everyday too she gives little time for lots of problems and doesnt even care that students are trying.
ID RATHER WAIT ANOTHER QUARTER OR TAKE CHEM AT ANOTHER SCHOOL THAN TO TAKE HER AGAIN I HOPE SHE SEES THIS AND CHANGES HER TEACHING STYLE/CLASS FORMAT EXAMS ARE SUPER HARD FOR NO REASON AND ALL THE OTHER ASSIGNMENTS BARELY COUNT TOWARDS YOUR GRADE
Her exams are quite difficult, but they are open notes and most of the questions had similar examples in lecture notes. Lectures are quite lengthy, but not mandatory attendance. She uploads recordings and her own version of notes that are more detailed. Her labs do not require a written report. Is easily accessible through office hours and email.
I, a high schooler, took CHEM 1A & 1C with Dr. Larson. She was always very eager to help me & was also more available outside of class than any teacher I have had. At first I had great difficulty with her exams, but after I started studying the word problems on her slides, I got MUCH better grades. I 100% recommend her for serious students.
RUN! Just run! I finished chem 1A and chem 1B with A+. I have to say her class is ridiculous. 10 quizzes 6.8% each. Around 15% for final. The assignments and homework are just a waste of time. They are useless and barely would help you prepare for the quizzes, which is the majority of the overall grade. Attendance is mandatory with VIDEO feed.
I recommend taking chem at a different school or waiting if she's the only one available. Tests and quizzes are so difficult even when you study off lectures, the textbook, and practice problems. She takes off points for the smallest things! Test averages would be D's. Listen to the bad reviews when they say it is impossible to pass her class...
Not sure why there are many negative reviews, but she was probably one of the best professors I've had at Foothill. Her class is TEST HEAVY so stay on track and attend lectures. However, she offers a lot of Zoom hours, and the homework is reflective of the exam for the most part. Just do practice problems when studying.
best chemistry professor Ive ever taken. If you have a chance to take Chem1C please take it with Dr. Larson! She cares about students and is always there to help you if you ask her questions. Show up for office hours and youre guaranteed to do well in the class. Attendance for lab is mandatory but lecture is recorded and she posts annotated notes
Dr. Larson had a very good grasp of the material and is the department head of general chemistry. However, that meant that her exams were much harder and I may have had a hard time adjusting because it was online. However, she cares a lot about her students and gives in depth explanations of all the concepts. HIghly recommend.
She cares, believe me. Class is tough, I struggled. There were points given to me on certain assignments that I didn't even deserve. Went to her office hours whenever I could and she gave me all her attention. She is approachable and will give youhelp.
Honestly, she is the best professor I have ever had. Yes, chemistry is hard, and she will make you work for it, but it's all to help you understand. A lot of kids complained because they never bothered to show up for office hours or put in the work to actually understand the material. If you show that you care about this class, she will help you.
Even though she seems like a really nice teacher, SHE IS NOT. Super hard exams and a tough grader. Even if you attend her office hours it still didn't help me much. Attending Lecture isn't mandatory but Lab is. Her Lab exams were slightly better since they were open book. Absolutely one of the worst teachers would not recommend
No just no
her class is really hard, I know that I could've studied better on my end but she could've designed her tests better
I actually took her back in the summer quarter. She's a good teacher, but you have to do a lot of learning by yourself. I got an A in chem 1b because I had such a great teacher, but in this class, my grade went down because her tests were really hard. Take her if you want to learn everything by yourself without the help of her.
She's not the best, but considering she was the better option for chem 1a, she is pretty good.
For me, chemistry is super difficult but Dr. Larson made my way of thinking about chemistry wayyyy better than I thought. I would 100% recommend people to take her because she will help you understand chemistry better and gives you the ground work in it. I only had her for lab but she always available to help and wants you to understand. What a gem
Professor Larson's class was well-structured and well thought out. She cares about students and wants them to succeed in this challenging class. I ended up having to take her section because the one I originally wanted was full, and I'm really glad!
If you are okay with having points docked off for the tiniest things then this class is for you i guess (why was the average for pre-labs a 70%). She's genuinely sweet and nice, but her way of teaching and lecturing was surface-level and poorly explained. I would talk to her after and go the extra mile but it was never good enough. TOUGH GRADING
She really wants to make sure you understand the material. She's a tougher grader, but explains the material very clearly. So far the best Chemistry teacher I've had.
Tough grading, but the professor cares and will give you her full attention during office hours. ChatGPT and unstuckstudy were helpful for studying. Worth pushing through the difficulty if you engage with the course materials.
very nice & cares but VERY tough grader, test heavy(test averages were always around 63%) teaching style&lectures personally werent for me &i didnt learn much from them, only take if youre very strong with chem (aced chem 25 but this was hard!!), expects you to know the content already, loonngg lab reports, do the extra credit & ask questions!!
If you're fuzzy on chemistry at all, do not take her. You will be teaching yourself most of the material. grades extremely harshly and not equally. Lectures weren't much help. Told us she needed therapy after grading our exams. If you're okay with teaching yourself, learning a lot of redundant/unnecessary things go for it.
