GREAT teacher, you will get a lot out of her class. However, if you have a good GPA and you think you can breeze through this class, you can’t, she won’t let you. It is a hard class, but you will learn a lot. This teacher believes in 3 units, 3 hours of homework, which is standard for college.
Friendliest teacher...very funny and whitty!I got so much out of Lonnie, and I only wish she had a English class for spring semester!
It took awhile for me to decide if I liked Lonnie or not She challenged me and really really imporoved my academic writing.From other things I've heard harder than other eng. classes but worth it if you care. Lonnie cares about her students and she'll remember your name after day 2 Thanks Lonnie!!!!
She is no doubt the best teacher I have ever had, She is passionate about her job and she has no problems helping you as long as you are willing to learn. She is a tough grader but I got an A and I was in high school at the time. I strongly recomend taking her class I learned a great deal!

By far the best teacher I have ever had. She really cares about her students and works hard to make sure that you understand each subject. I would recommend her to any student who is willing to work hard but learn a lot.

VERY challenging, but one of the best teachers I've ever had. Synthesizes course material with real-world, present-day relevance. You love her or you hate her. Maximum effort IS REQUIRED. Not a class to sleep through.
Professor seems to enjoy degrading students rather than helping them to succeed. Efforts to improve, via The Learning Center, seem to be ignored or minimalized.
I learned a lot in her class. She tells you exactly how to format your paper. However, that is good and bad. If your format is off, she will take off a lot of points. You dont have to be a good writer, just have the format done. It is a challenging class, but worth it
Okay well i failed her class and i put in so much time i hurt. Her class is very consuming i must have spent at least 20 hours a week on all the homework she gives and essay revising. But i have to say i learned A LOT but this class was hell. Shes a wonderful teacher but if u take the class make sure its the only class u take.
Lonnie truly cares about teaching and her students. At times she can seem strident but that is just her frustration with apathetic students. I received an A but I worked very hard.I would recommend her for anyone who is serious about improving their writing skills.If your papers are structured to her satisfaction you will be at the top of the class
She is honestly the best english teacher I have ever had! I took her class 2 summers ago & I'm still using techniques learned in her class to write. She's difficult but VERY insightful & can answer ANY question about english. If you are looking for an easy A don't take her but take her if you really want to learn and improve your skills.
Saying she is tough is a GROSS UNDERSTATEMENT!!!!! Be prepared to sweat blood in this class. She's very knowledgeable, extremely willing to help, and it's clear that she is very passionate and dedicated to teaching English. Though, in all honesty, her class should be reserved for above average English students. English class aka fear factor!
She is the best english teacher i have ever had. She grades hard but you learn a lot in her class. She really wants all over her students to succeed. I highly recommend taking this class. She is the coolest English teacher I have ever had. Her teaching techniques are awesome.
She is one tough cookie. I took her for Eng 091 which was super super easy because I should have gotten into 101. DON'T BE LATE! and she really cares about attendance. Sometimes she could be a lil degrading towards students so if you dont take it too personally then you'll be fine. I'm gonna take her again if I get the chance.

don't be a whip! take her class! if your not a good writer now, they you will be by the time she is finished with you. be prepared to do a lot of reading and work on your own. she really does want to help you
Prof. Kent-Stacy is really nice and helpful if you do all that is required for the class, and she really does care about all of her students...just don't get on her bad side :)
awesome teacher. cares a lot about her students. wants everyone to succeed whether she likes you or not. some people think her class is hard, but it's really not that tough. if you put in the effort you'll succeed and become a better writer. if you're struggling to keep up your grade but she knows you're trying she'll help you so that you pass.
Lonnie is a brilliant professor. If you are serious about your academic life this is the teacher you should take, if you want an easy A, go somewhere else. She is the most 'human' professor I've had, and she will absolutely make the effort to connect with each of her students (assuming there is any life in them to tap into). -Nicholas Verdekel
Lonnie is tough but she is one of the most amazing professors i've had at COC. I learned more in her class than I did in 4 years of high school english. If you're looking for an easy A, you're wasting you're time, but if you really want to grow as a writer, take this class!
Lonnie motivated me to critically think, form my own opinions, and keep informed with what is going on in the world. I'm going back to the material I learned, even though I just finished her class. Never had a teacher delivered such positive impact in my life. The class is challenging and worthwhile. She's awesome. :)
Honestly, she is a very judgmental teacher. I sat through her bringing down students in her attempt to "push them" in the right direction. She says she is just trying to be helpful but in reality she is treating us like we're morons. She really is a one-of-a-kind professor. She demands complete promptness and all of your attention while she drags on about how much the world sucks. She motivates critical thinking and makes you work for your grade. Overall- she was worth it.
If you want a challenge,take Lonnie.You're going to have a tough time, but you will definitely learn.She doesn't sugarcoat anytin, tells you straight up what she expects.I was going to say she was helpful bcoz she was during the sem, but then she also said she was going to help me out with something & she never came through.Oh well.

She is VERY intense. You can learn a lot from her but she is judgmental. She ALWAYS talked about her other class at LAVC and talked about them as if they were stupid &incapable to do anything. This class has a lot of work. If you aren't willing to put in the time, do NOT take it. Time is necessary for this class because it is VERY time consuming!!!

Lonnie is an amazing professor. She's very.. Intense. She shares her views with her students and some seem to think that she's trying to push her values on them, but she's not. What you learn in Engl101 will help you for the rest of college, so I suggest paying attention. The only fault of hers is that she's a tough grader. I got an A, though :)
ONLY WANTS STUDENTS WHO ARE WILLING TO TRY. In the beginning she is kinda harsh towards the class but it is just her way of getting rid of the kids who dont care. Once you can see past that she is an amazing teacher

Most of these comments are extremely ignorant. Grow up. The only reason there is so much trash talk is because people aren't willing to learn something new that seems tough. This teacher stresses structured writing. Many don't seem to like it; I absolutely hate it. But you'll learn how, and this teacher is fair.
Very difficult class. Teacher is nice, but the work is hard and very time consuming. Really depends on your understanding of college level writing. I do not suggest just jumping into this class if 101 is your first college English class
Unless you are an A+ student, this teacher could really care less about you. She spends most of her class praising the students excelling and separating them into their own groups. If you are struggling at all, kiss her help goodbye. She sets you up for failure and you if you are a creative writer don't even bother. You can only use her suggestion

Lonnie is amazing! I've had her for both eng 091 and eng 102 and if i could i would continue to take her! Her classes are always interesting and she makes everything relatable. The only reason why everyone is so negative about her is because they were too lazy to take themselves seriously enough to try! ive learned so much from her! thanks Lonnie!
Excellent professor. She may be intimidating at first, but she truly just wants you to succeed. Her class is a lot of work, but worth it in the end. Just make sure to ask for help when you do not understand something, she is always willing to help. She invests in her students, and I miss that now that I am in a class where the teacher doesn't care.

She is a CLOSE MINDED person, she has an attitude of MY WAY OR THE HIGHWAY, you have to make your papers EXACTLY THE WAY SHE WANTS THEM, or you get a C or lower, no Bs. she plays favoritism, & the people she likes get As, & the people's papers she doesn't like automatically get Cs or lower. I would not recommend taking her. RUN.

Don't listen to any of these guys. Lonnie was an amazing prof. If you work hard she will give you the grade you deserve. Multiple extra credit opportunities and shes the only teacher i've ever met that genuinely cares about her students. She makes college writing SO much easier.
Took Eng102 in 5 weeks over summer. It was not easy but it wasn't ridiculous either. A lot of reading and 3 papers. Honestly, I don't like English but I enjoyed her class. She cares a lot about her students. She grades tough and it is hard to get an A if you aren't the best writer though. I am a decent writer and got B's on everything.
Lonnie is a fair teacher overall! She cares tremendously about her students but will not give you a grade that you don't deserve. I never really cared for english before her class but she helped me gain and understanding of it and helped me enjoy the art of writing. Lonnie is great and will help you but be prepared to work for your grade.
Class was very reasonable. If you do all the work, you will pass. I thought it was really easy and got an A in the class. I'm not the best writer, but she gives points for improving. There are a lot of memorization quizzes, but they are easy and if you study for them they will help boost your grade a lot. Overall a really good class.
yes, she does require you to show up to every class and you cant turn in any late work but if you're organized and follow her guidelines, this class is well worth it! She taught me more than any other professor has.
Amazing professor! Very caring and interested in making sure every student succeeds. The readings are a must and annotating will help you throughout the entire course, including the final! Love her and would highly recommend her!
Professor Kent-Stacy is extremely hard especially when it comes to grading. She expects A LOT. However, I did learn a lot and appreciated her sense of humor. Expect to work very hard for a C/B unless you're a naturally gifted writer, you will have to work hard. Ace the tests and quizzez and it will pad your grade.
Lonnie is a great professor. She definitely cares about her students, more than any other professor I've had. You definitely can't slack in her class or expect easy grading. She reads EVERY word on every essay and has a very intricate grading system. I worked very hard on every paper and got a B. Don't take her if you want an easy A.
Lonnie is a kind-hearted teacher who really cares about her students. Just make sure you do the reading & put effort into the essays because she reads every word. I'm a terrible procrastinator but I still got a B in the class.
The fill in quizzes have 2 be word 4 word how she would write them herself. She is unrealistic in that sense. Even if you answer how it is in your notes if she doesn't feel your right that day your not. "Ds get degrees" is what she told the last class to explain how she failed half the class which is absolute bull. I passed with a lot of work.
Passed the class, however, I absolutely hated her. Not because I slacked off or did poorly in the class nor did I think she was hard. It's her certain beliefs and dry humor that is borderline offensive. Beware, she also takes favorites in the class and belittles others who aren't in their same level.
I am a straight A student and work really hard, but I have never taken such a difficult class in my entire life. If you were not taught how to cite properly you are screwed. If you don't know how to annotate properly you are also screwed. I learned a lot and I will be far more prepared than a lot of other English 101 students, but it was rough.
I did not like her AT ALL, but she was a good teacher. She taught me a lot, I just dreaded coming to class because she was just so judgmental and makes you uncomfortable. When other people say they took Kent Stacy they said they hated her. She does give kind of a lot of work which includes quizzes, essays, reading. and this class is not an easy A.
I took her over the summer course and she was the one of the least helpful professors I have ever had. Was confusing and misleading about the works cited and everything else. The class was completely disorganized and we had work almost every single night. She will pick out the smallest errors and remember the mistakes you make. Don't take!!
Incredibly difficult teacher. If you are an English major, maybe you would like her. She is the type of professor that will grade you for accuracy based exactly on her expectations. For example, if you interpret a passage in a different manner than she does, then you will lose points.
I really did learn a lot in this class. However, her expectations are insurmountable. She wasn't the type of teacher who cared for out of the box thinking. I spent countless hours in the TLC, researching, and editing my papers. It just didn't cut it. I feel that she would be better suited to teaching higher level classes.
Took over the summer for credit. Very compressed course, every grade matters. Highly suggest doing extra credit quizzes. Tough grader, but gives good feedback. Asks for essays in a very specific manner. If you're trying to get an easy A this is not the class for you.
I'm an A student and I'm doing nothing but drowning in this class. What this professor wants is unclear and anytime I try to ask for clarification, I'm told to "see the lecture". I've yet to receive more than an 80% on ANY assignment. The feedback is vague, almost like it's copy and pasted. Maybe this professor is better in person. TERRIBLE online!
This class was exceptionally challenging but even more rewarding. Be prepared to spend at least 20 hours (per essay) writing and revising your four essays. If you put your all into the class, you can learn how to craft an exceptional essay. Your writing will stand out against your peers in subsiquint classes.
Eng 101 Online. Tons of personal interaction, wants u to succeed. Gem of an educator. High standards; tough but fair grader. Quizzes are open book, but are VERY challenging w/ strict timing. If you think you will get an A without reading beforehand, think again. 4 essays that progressively build on skills + quizzes/HW. Lazy ppl need not apply.
Will not take her class ever again. Her expectations are unrealistic, especially timewise. She has locked all her assignments and release them at the last minute, sometimes unlocks at midnight and wants assignment finish by 6pm same day. No flexibility to finish assignments on your own free available time which is surprising since this is online

High Expectation for a general class. Quiz are timed you get 1 minute a question. Discussions have strict rules and you need about 2 citations for main response and 2 citations for response for 2 classmates. Too high expectations on your paper. Avoid her if you can to save yourself.
Taking this class online over the summer term was not smart. Hardest class Ive taken in college yet. Each discussion responses had to be 500 words MINIMUM, and you must respond to two other classmates with 250 words EACH. Essays were complex, but thats expected. Barely passed with a low B. Not an English major btw.
I would NOT recommend taking classes with this professor at all! She is very rude and doesn't help when you need it. Emailing her doesn't help because she always emails you back telling you to "read the lectures" which aren't helpful whatsoever. All her feedback is useless and she won't even hesitate to answer your simplest of questions when asked
Gave me good feedback when it came to assignments but will refuse to accept when they are wrong and will turn it around and blame you. for example, I have been penalized for not reaching the minimum word count for assignments even though I did and when given proof including screen shot's from mutable site's she pretty much said not her problem
She didn't even help when I asked all she said was read my lectures and won't even answer basic questions I had for her. She would leave a message on canvas for all to see that most of her students would get her assignments wrong. If more than half the class is getting things wrong maybe its a sign that she should start actually teaching?
Asked for my perspective on assignment and then told me my perspective was wrong? I wouldnt recommend to take this teacher. Shes very stubborn and wont help of you ask.
Do not take !!!! Her assignments dont make sense and if you reach out for help she will just brush you off. Shes rude and definitely not helpful what so ever shes posted so many announcement saying that her students got her assignments wrong or not the way she wanted it. At that point why dont you actually start teaching us ?
Terrible professor . most of her assignments dont even make sense and a Lot of my peers have been called out by her for not understanding the work but when we go to her all she does is Say to go read her lecture or shell Brush us off. how are we supposed to understand and get our work right if she doesn't teach us? I'd avoid this professor.
I missed one peer review just because I forgot about it and she graded my essay a lot more harsh than she usually does. She always gives a lot of feedback but sometimes it doesn't even make sense. I am usually a straight A student and I am currently getting a C in her class.
Professor is a very hard grader but helped me learn quite a few things. She is easy to reach outside of class and was understanding for my personal situations. The class I took was a short-term class, so there was a ton of work due in a short period of time but I am very glad I took this class because I feel like I learned so much.

Professor Kent-Stacy is awful. If you can take the class from a different teacher I would heavily advise doing so. Professor Kent-Stacy is a horrible professor. No one wants to take her class because she is one of the worst on campus. She wont tell you how to do an assignment or what she expects, then you put a bunch of time and effort into your essays to just have her post nothing but negative comments and doesnt lift her students up at all.
Wish I wouldve taken a different class to be honest. This class made me hate English all together
She wont help you if you email her, she will just say go read the lecture which doesnt help whatsoever. She is a super mean teacher and I am a good student but she makes me feel stupid and like I shouldnt even be in college. Rudest teacher I have ever had. Professor gave absolutely no slack when grading whatsoever. A lot of assignments but expected for a 5 week class. Many discussions no one even got a 10/10.
This was far more difficult than it should have been. Grading is unclear, and when asked for feedback she does not give much. Though when she does leave feedback it leaves one more confused and wonder if she would like to hear her own words rather her students. It would have helped ease the stress if she could have provided better feedback.
I wasted a semester taking this class. Took forever to grade papers and Canvas was unorganized. For an introductory class, this was way harder than it should've been. Was also rude and unhelpful with feedback. I would stay clear
May have Been the worst professor in my entire time at COC. The work is structured like an English 103 class provides little to no feedback but when she does it makes you more confused than you were before. The class started with 30 students and has no dwindled to 6 total due to her structure and confusing feedback.
