Very confusing!!
Not very caring
Pretty close to aardvaark if mentioned in encyclopedia britannica :)
His additions of Full Metal Challenge slides to the lectures are rather enjoyabl
I guess he's not a bad prof if you're interested in what he's teaching.
An excellent prof who knows what he's talking about and seems to genuinly enjoy teaching.
Very confusing in the way he teaches... does not have a set style of teaching... switches from lecture to lecture
So yeah, this course wasn't interesting, and perhaps if we didn't have to memorize phylum and species for the exam it wouldn't have been so bad, however we did and that made it not so fun.
The class average for his exam was less than 50%.
Awesome thesis supervisor. So helpful, full of ideas. I'm glad I got to know him better.

What a****ty exam!! I can't believe it! I mean, give us a break here!
What the hell kind of graphs and charts? Races through lectures, confusing!
Exam from hell...beware children
Insane exam. No real point in studying hard... would've gotten the same mark.
His exams are impossible and assoholic

nice man, tough exams. his exam killed our class and they had to bell.
Really good lectures, impossible exams. Unless you can memorize every minute little fact (and there are a TON of them), you're bound to do badly. Class average on his exam was 50% till they belled it.
Wow... You would not believe the difference between 302 and 200. Lonnie hates 200. But you get into 302 and he's awesome. Well done Lonnie!
What the hell are you talking about? Lectures -good...are you him or something?
Arrogant and unhelpful.
Impossible exam
glad new profs have taken over for 303,
It owuld help if you didn't speak in monotone, for starters.
Speaks in a bit of a monotone but makes it like storytime! Exams are not as bad as they are made out to be. Obviously really engaged in his topic. Drawin rocks!
I really liked his notes!
The class just seemed dull. It was hard to stay interested or to have to motivation and excitement to actually go to lecture.
Excellent prof... very clear and an incredible speaker that is engaging and excited about his work. His lecture notes are very helpful and exams are fair.
awsome lectures and great notes! loved the Human population lectures!
He is a talented lecturer, but his exams are very difficult without a hint of ease. They require heavy detail. Study early.
This is such a terribly boring course, if it wasnt mandatory I would have dropped it. It is such a waste of time. The prof is dull and puts you to sleep and the notes explain nothing! The labs are even more useless.
The course was incredibly dull. Perhaps he should stop being full of himself.
I found Prof Aarsen unapproachable, full of himself and downright rude. His courses are dull and he has little concern for students. I will avoid any further courses taught by him at all costs.
this prof is one of those **** profs that can get away with it because he's so smart. His lectures are hard to follow because they aren't in power point format, but i recommend hand writing the heading and subheadings that each figure falls under, this makes it much more cohesive.
Great Class. Taught me to love plants.
I think Dr. Aarssen is much better suited to teaching this course, which he designed himself. It was thoroughly interesting and extremely well taught. Much of the material consists of his own ideas, which are quite remarkable.
Biol350 was my favourite course I've ever taken at Queen's. Aarssen taught it in a way that the material was completely engaging and enlightening. And he's dreamy :)
This class is a joke and a waste of time. Aarson just rambles on and on with no evidence. It should be in the arts department, this is not science!!
Aarssen is clear and interesting. 350 was an awesome class that opened my eyes to so many different things. He is truly passionate about what he does.
Meh. NOthing special.
Most important class I've ever taken, and probably most interesting. Awesome lectures, easy grading, messy lecture slides though and Aarssen should be careful about stepping on toes, especially regarding religion. Favourite course I've taken at Queen's though.
best course i've taken at Queen's. aarssen is an amazing lecturer and i found the course was extremely well organized and fair and the subject matter was by far the most interesting of any course i've ever taken. i could rant about this for a long time. the course is amazing.
Very average course. The material could have been a lot more interesting. He tries hard to present it in an enlightening way but one can only get so interested about plant life cycles. However, the exam is fair and the course breakdown makes it easy to do well if you put in the work.
Quite unaccommodating if you have an issue with exam times. His final was however quite manageable; huge boost in mark after the final. Life Cycles suck...
Makes the course seem easy while you're taking it. The exam doesn't seem too bad when you're taking it but the grading rubric for it is garbage. It is very difficult to get a great mark in this class because of it.
makes the material seem pretty easy during the course but then the exam....the exam oh my what a hard exam. i had an A going into the final, the final was only worth 30% and i still finished with only a B...
I thought he was a great prof!! Exam wasn't that bad if you studied!
Probably one of the most interesting and best courses I have taken. A very light course load, and relatively easy earned marks if you put the time and effort in throughout the term. Lectures and slides are amazing. The most difficult part of this course was his final exam. Focused purely on memorization from his lecture.
The lectures were interesting though pretty morbid for the first 8 weeks . The final exam was ridiculously easy if you took the time to study and have the ability to memorize hefty amounts of information.
In my whole undergraduate degree at Queen's, he is the most rude and unhelpful man who is involved with the faculty.
Some of the most boring lectures I have taken at Queen's. Some people were surprised at how interesting they found plants but between the material (plants) and his teaching style every class was a struggle to stay awake.
Terrible. Just terrible. It's almost like he doesn't want his students to do well. He is very rigid in his opinions, and a lot of the content of this course was very one-sided from his perspective. Went to ask him a question, incredibly rude.
One of the most laidback course I've ever taken at Queen's. Used the lectures to nap between 2-engineering classes (and got my friend to use my iClicker for me). Spent maybe 4 hours total doing work for the class (quizzes and discussion posts), spent about 4 hours studying for the final. Final was pure memorization.
He says to focus on lectures, but most of the lecture was just filled with pictures, and he rambles a lot. Final wasn't easy, but if you memorized everything (which I didn't) you'd do fine. Unfortunately, I think my A was destroyed by that exam. Lectures were very boring.
The worst professor I have ever encountered. Very condescending and teaches you his own opinions rather than actual facts. Also a very rude person who is unsympathetic to student's needs.
Literally the worst. I don't have anymore more to say.
First time course offered online. Stupid group projects can hurt your mark. Can prepare your final exam answers ahead and I spent days studying and preparing excellent answers. But marking rubric is so ridiculous that what should have been an easy A+ for me did not turn out this way. Loved actual course material. But stay away from this prof!
The most non-compassionate and unsympathetic professor I've ever had at Queen's.
Good lecturer. His ideas may throw you off at first but when studying for the final, it is actually pretty interesting content. Don't really need to take notes. If you show up, you'll do well.
Loved this class, really makes you think!
You get the exam questions before the exam to prepare answers. He grades a bit harder because of this, as he is giving you this time to prepare so you should have good answers. The assignments in the class are easy good grades, but not worth a lot. The exam is worth a LOT. Too many lectures.
Rudest Prof I've ever had at this University. His grading scheme for the final exam is absolutely ridiculous. All through the year he says ' don't worry too much about specific details, as long as you pay attention in class you're fine', but then his grading scheme for exam has the most specific things on it such as the exact percentage..
Professor Aarrsen teaches some important material without a doubt. Which is what makes his absolute failure to communicate respectfully to his students and address questions so surprising. There's a difference between just being a "tough prof" and failing to meet the standards of being a professor at an institution like Queen's.
He was inconsiderate and lacked compassion for students. While most courses made helpful changes during the COVID-19 pandemic, he made few adjustments and lacked communication. We knew nothing about our exam format until one week prior and other details until the day of. He was also often unhelpful and unaccommodating to students' questions.
Dr. Aarssen is unaccommodating and has no compassion for his students. He ignored questions from students in the discussion forum that he did not want to answer and made our exam much harder than in previous years since we were writing it online during the pandemic. Do not expect to get any helpful feedback from the teaching staff in this course.
I enjoyed the assignments and the class leading up to the final - I hadn't gotten a mark below an A. I prepared extremely hard for the exam using the literal questions he provided us in guides ahead of time, and somehow got a C+. He doesn't answer questions and doesn't care about students.
Not available outside class, horrible communicator, and marks VERY unfairly. Would not reccommend this class.
I found the course content extremely interesting! The final exam was fair in my opinion and I ended up doing pretty well but I also definitely took the time to study even though it was online. The prof was not great at communicating throughout the duration of the course however the assignments and final exam were fair and marked well. I recommend!
-exam info given one week before the date -answering questions with verbatim course content resulted in a C -ignoring student emails all semester -not answering content questions in forum -ignoring emails requesting to see marking rubric and graded final -outdated course content in a course where time is a major theme -disregard for students
BIOL 350 was an absolute gong show. The professor was very difficult to reach through email and unaccommodating during the pandemic. I really questioned some of his course content, as it was heavily skewed towards his personal opinions and backed by very few academically credible sources. Who at Queen's approved this class?
After finishing my degree at Queens I can safely say this was the worst prof I've ever had. His lack of compassion is clear when responding to students online during this pandemic. The exam is the worst, even if you think you answered every question right you'll still get an awful mark. The course content is also outdated and boring.
I had an A+ going into exam and studied very hard, but ended up with a D. I emailed to ask him for feedback and he was extremely dismissive and rude, refusing to give me any reason for the grade. I had to appeal his decision and was told that so many people are appealing that they refunded my money. Worst experience with a prof at Queens.
The most condescending and uncaring professor I've ever had the displeasure to know. When asked questions about assessments or the course, would reply by asking students to refer to the instructions, as if the students would not know to do that beforehand.
When I requested to review my exam, Lonnie failed to respond. 9 months later, I received an email from Lonnie stating that he might be able to squeeze in a meeting in a month or two. Things you can expect to happen more quickly than a Lonnie email response include carrying a pregnancy to term or building a house. Wouldn't survive outside academia.
Absolutely, by far, the least caring prof I have ever had. He does the very bare minimum for this course. Furthermore, he cherry picks statistics to support his views, then tests us on his opinion on very complex and nuanced topics. Does not take into consideration anything the students think.
I can't believe what people are saying. I have not taken the final so I can't speak to that, but come on, your grade is like half participation, how hard could the course really be? Easily the most interesting class I've taken at this school. By a long shot. If you like learning about evolution and psychology, you'll love this course.
Strange but interesting course. He lays out exactly what to expect on the final so even though it is worth a lot you can get a good grade as long as you put in effort. The iclicker can be a pain sometimes. He's an old fashioned guy but as long as you follow his framework things should work out.
I requested a regrade, and the professor said everyone got 20 extra points due to TA errors. After the regrade, he admitted I did better but refused to adjust my grade since the improvement was under the "20-point error space." He was dismissive and rude, saying, "TAs are human," and claimed he didn't keep track of my new score and shut down convo
Such a strange class, and definitely has its reputation within the faculty. You really get out of it what you put into it, so if you really lock in it is a breeze... As long as you can decipher what Dr. Aarssen is talking about,
Guy thinks he is a genius, if you want to stroke his ego have at it. Waste of time here.
Just very unkind and self absorbed.
Rude and really boring.
Don't understand how this guy has spent so much of his life developing into such a boring, inconsiderate, waste of time. Do not take this course.
