I thought this class was really easy. She doesn't take attendance, but it's math so obviously you need to go to class. She assigns homework, but it isn't taken up for a grade. It's super helpful. She goes over any questions from the homework in class. She makes it easy to understand and is really relaxed! I would take her class again

Take this professor if you need to take a math class! Attendance is not mandatory, and you do not have to have the textbook. Unlike other MATH 1120 classes, you do not use web assign and all homework is optional! Her tests are very easy if you show up to class, and she does not try to trick you. Definitely recommend!

Really cool teacher, pretty standard math class. Long (but "optional" speeches, as well as optional homework. I hardly came to class except for the days I was told there would be a pop quiz, so I would get somebody to send me the a list of the content and just learn it all myself. Only grades were 3 or 4 pop quizzes, even less tests, and a final.

I liked the class overall. Was very good at making things easy to understand and very accessible outside class. I made a B in the class and never made below a B on a test. Theres no homework grades which is good and bad. Liked her as a professor just wish there more grades.

Merchant is an easy A as long as you don't have to take any more math classes. You need to show up to know when the quizzes are, but she generally sends an email out anyway. Homework isn't graded so only your tests and quizzes make up your grade.

Hands down the best math professor I have had at Auburn. She goes through the work and the material that she teaches is exactly what she tests on, no surprises at all. If you do your homework (which isn't bad, there is a bit every class, but she doesn't grade it so you can do it at your own leisure) you will definitely get an A.

Grade was calculated based off of tests and a weekly quiz. She gives homework everyday, but it is purely for practice. Attendance isn't required, but it makes the class very easy if you do go. She seemed to be easier than other cal professors that my friends had, but she prepared me well for the common final.

Dr. Merchant gives you a low-maintenance class--you can make what you want out of it. I went into Calc 1 already having taken AP Calc, so I did homework as needed to review and did just fine. She ends class early most days and has a unique sense of humor. She joked around with everyone and was willing to help.

This class is pretty straightforward. For real, do the homework. Even if you think you know how to do the subject matter, going through the homework will only reinforce your skills you already have and allow you to plow through the tests in which you have little time to think for a long time about what you are doing. She's a great teacher.

If your major doesnt require a lot of math, I recommend taking her class. It is easy if you attend class and do the homework. While homework is optional, you have weekly quizzes on WebAssign that typically come straight from there. She is funny and laid back, and often lets class out early.

Best pre-calc professor in my opinion at Auburn. She is extremely relatable and understands her students needs. All homework is optional and only for practice. Tests are a lot easier than the homework, if you need to take math 1120 definitely take it with Merchant.

Lora Merchant is awesome and by far the best pre-cal professor in my opinion. I am pretty average at math and doing just fine in her class. She is very good about answering questions and her tests are pretty straightforward. Her homework she assigns is not mandatory or graded but doing it will for sure help you out on her tests. 10/10 recommend!!!!

TAKE HER!!!! This was my first college math class and I was so nervous coming in and Merchant was incredible. Teaching style is super simple. As long as you go to class, take notes, and DO THE HOMEWORK before the WebAssign quizzes, you'll do fine. Finished the class with a 99.95. Also she is SO funny and head of the dept. so she makes the exam!!

Very relatable and makes calculus easy. She is very personable and answers every question. She often lets out class early. There is a good bit of (optional) homework, but between that, classwork, and tests, it is pretty painless. She is lenient in most aspects. She truly wanted all of us to succeed. Not to mention, shes an absolute riot.

She was an angel in disguise. She came in a month into semester as our first teacher was fired, and she was a savior. She retaught us everything in a much easier method and the class average went from C/D to A/B in no time. She took responsibility for making an exam too hard and curved it. Did 5 exams including final but dropped lowest score.

Dr. Merchant is one of the best professors I have had at Auburn. She doesn't put anything on the tests that isn't similar to the things she works in class. If you go to class and take notes on the problems that she works, it's an easy A! I suggest working the problems in the book until you get everything, but they aren't required. Wonderful lady.

She's an absolute riot. She's very good at explaining her material, and her webassign quizzes help you gauge how much you need to study. Four tests and quite a few (mostly easy) online quizzes. Always has a review the class before an exam. Only reason I didn't do better is because I suck at math.

Math sucks unless you are good at it. She was willing to put in so many hours during the Covid semester to ensure all her students were getting the information they needed to do well. She is more than a basic math teach. If you have a choice to take her DO IT. She will work with you during office hours for as long as you want. she is really great.

Lectures were short and concise. The math was not hard, but for an online class there was so much work. 4-5 homework assignments with anywhere between 25-60 problems each and two quizzes plus an extra assignment where you have to make up statements each week. 4 exams plus a cumulative final. overall a good professor but unnecessary amount of work.

Lectures are straight to the point and she's always willing to answer questions or stay after class. She once stayed on zoom for 2 hours to help me. Tests are not hard as long as you do the work and understand the material.

Dr Merchant really wants you to succeed!! I am awful at math and she helped me so much. I took the online class and anytime i had questions she would do a zoom call with me and gave me half credit on test problems frequently if i just forgot my + or - sign. I definitely recommend taking her!!

Dont skip class, do well on all the quizzes and review (essentially open book). This saved my grade! She replaces lowest test with final. I suck at math but she made it a lot easier. Grade may look ugly before the final, but once she added attendance, quiz, reviews, and final, I ended with an 86. She is really caring and ready to help

I absolutely LOVE Dr. Merchant Joseph. She is an amazing teacher and I took her for both precalculus classes. I took the class online and she uploads many videos of her doing the problems and explaining the concepts clearly. She always responds to emails quickly and does her best to help students understand all the material. 10/10 recommend.

Her tests are not like the homework or study guides, so my grades were not great. I would recommend coming to class, as participation matters a lot to her, but if your're good at math, you probably won't have to.

I took her class online, so I don't know her personally as a teacher, but the class was okay. Just make sure you do the homework, quizzes, canvas assignments, and tests on time and you should be good. It's good doing it online because it allows you to be flexible with the workload and do it when you want to and at what pace. Take this class!

Ignore all of the negative comments you see below. It is an online class so it is expected to take matters into your own hands at times, but her tests are almost IDENTICAL to the study guide. I have not gone to office hours which I regret, but her TA's are there to help. If you are not willing to TRY, don't even bother taking it.

I LOVED this class! I took it online but it was a breeze you could go at your own pace. I'm not sure how others did but I got all A's on the tests and an A on the final. The review for the test is exactly like the test. Take her class. Very easy

My FAVORITE professor. She was so nice & let us out early most days. She assigns homework after every class, but it's not graded, it's just there to help you. If you can do it, you'll pass. There's a quiz that's graded, but you can retry the problems, & it had a max of like 5 questions & it helps your grade. Also the tests were pretty easy.

Prof. Merchant is a great math professor. I have never been good at math, but her teaching style works well for me and she explains the material very clear. You do need to go to class to do well. I took her distant learning class for MATH 1300, and it was okay overall. Only weekly homework (5 attempts per question) and quizzes (2 attempts per question with not a lot of questions) along with weekly Canvas assignments which were basically weekly reflections. Got back to emails quickly and is very caring.

Dr. Merchant was a great professor. I had her online Precalculus class during this past Summer semester. She responded back to emails very quickly, same day. I had issues with time changes and she was very understanding about those problems. She is very encouraging and truly wants you to succeed in her class. I wish I could have her Calculus class.

I took Math 1150 twice before taking this class and got the grade I wanted. I struggle with math but she teaches in a way that is very easy to grasp. She gives lots of easy HW so that helps takes pressure off of exam grades. 100% recommend taking her class if you have previously struggled with math.

Dr. Merchant is very chill and explains math very easily. If you have difficulty in her class, she will answer emails pretty quickly and her TA John David is very helpful. The hw isn't required but it's very helpful and is just good practice. There are quizzes for every unit and are usually the same problems as the hw. Her class is short too.

Y'all, if you took precalc in highschool, this is literally a recap. You maybe learn one or two new things or things you forgot but don't stress out at all in this class. She is nice, has notes online, but unless you know the material before hand, you kind of have to go more in depth on the content with her (rare). Easy grade.

First math class I was able to do well in! Attendance is mandatory and you get 3 free skips. There are 4 tests and a cumulative final that can replace your lowest test grade. There are multiple online quizzes due at the end of each week but they are short and easy and the lowest 6 scores are dropped. Homework is helpful and not mandatory.

LOVED Dr. Merchant. She made the class easy to understand and straight forward. Optional homework that is exactly like the test, and easy 2-5 question quizzes that help boost grade. The only thing I will say is don't take at 8am because class engagement was not great and it made class awkward.

Lora Merchant is a great professor. iClicker is used so attendance is important, but it's not a bad class to sit through. Tests are straightforward and super easy. She gives you a test review before every test that is super helpful. If you took anywhere up to Algebra 2 in high school, you should be fine.

Its very similar to the math you take in high school Pre cal; then it gets harder as the year goes on. The final wasn't bad but just be prepared with the homework. I did her 8 am, and not very many people showed up, but she was thankful and helped us out a lot for those who came. Great professor all around.

She is concise, and if you have any questions, she does very well with answering anything! Very kind, definitely recommend!
