If you do poorly in his class, it's 1000% your fault, because he does everything possible, and he does it right. You have to see it to believe it.

This is one of the very few teacher who actually cares about your grade and you. He gives the last three years of tests for practice. Organic Chemistry is a hard subject but he makes it so simple to understand. I recommend this professor over any other. Keep in mind that just because he is a great professor doesn't mean you'll get an easy A. He still makes you work for it. Ochem is a really difficult subject, but Barnhurst makes it totally understandable. He gives so many resources that there's no reason to do poorly in this class. Even if you don't understand a concept after many tries, he's open for questions, either in person or in email. He really works to make sure that his students have the ability to do well.

Dr. Barnhurst's approach to teaching makes Organic Chem, which is often considered one of the most difficult Pre-Med courses, easily digestible and understandable. He doesn't dumb-down the course, but instead approaches it in a way that is intuitive and easily understood. Consistently above average ACS final scores from his students prove this.

He really goes out of his way to make one of the hardest classes, doable. With him, chemistry was fun. It's been one of the hardest things I've ever done, but I still like it. He gives you really good fill in the blank notes. Most people never need the textbook. All the lectures are recorded and there are really good practice handouts for each day.

For me, he has made organic chemistry easier than general chemistry. He's a hilarious lecturer, and his "hands on" approach really makes it stick for months after you've learned it. He makes hoards of memorization inherit to ochem manageable. I know students who've rocked the old MCAT's ochem section by reviewing his innovative lecture notes.

Professor Barnhurst is very thorough and provides a great classroom dynamic between the students when he lectures. He's always helpful when talking to him personally whether after class or during his office hours. I enjoyed coming to lecture and lab, and would take another class from him again.

Barnhurst does not make attendance mandatory but he does have all the lectures recorded online which saved me when I didn't go to class or didn't understand the lecture because sometimes he goes really fast. Practice is key in this class especially to get an A on the tests.

Getting the information from lectures is incredibly important. This information is easily accessible in class or online making it easy to participate. There are many practice sheets to make sure the information is sinking in.

By using his teaching methods (recitations, dry labs, class participation) it made it possible for me to get an A (with some effort on my side of course).

Dr. Barnhurst is the best science teacher I have ever had throughout university. He is very effective in his teaching style and is easily accessible outside of class. He makes the difficult subject of O Chem much more easily understood. He is extremely patient and is willing to do anything for the student to succeed

I thought O Chem was going to be super scary and difficult, but Dr. Barnhurst made it totally doable. The class wasn't necessarily easy but his office hours and recitations were fantastic and I always found a way to understand even the hard things.

Professor Barnhurst teaches in a way that I found not only effective, but also very enjoyable. (I know, how can someone make organic chemistry enjoyable right?) Well, this man found a way.

Dr. Barnhurst puts his ALL into making sure you understand the class material. It shows how much he loves what he does, and he doesn't put you down when you go to ask for help, if all teachers put passion into teaching the way he did, then students wouldn't stress about going to classes.

Dr. Barnhurst Is a great teacher will go out of his way for you to learn. You will walk out of his class reciting is material. A tough grader and a stickler for detail, but its all to prepare you and better your understanding. Would recommend to anyone, he gives so many resources and tools to succeed, there is just now way not to take advantage.

Listen in class and the lectures he posts, do as he suggests, and you get the grade you want.

Talk to him! He might seem a little scary at first, but once you get comfortable he's 110% willing to do everything he can to make sure you LEARN. Keep that in mind, you have to work with him, he's not going to hand you a grade but he's extremely fair and will give you every tool you need to learn how to succeed.

Great professor. Dr. Barnhurst provides all the tools to tackle organic chemistry. His methods for learning Organic Chemistry are unique and incredibly effective. His enthusiasm for the subject and ability to apply the material to real scenarios keep the attention of the entire class at all times.

He really makes this class an ochem guide for dummies-he explains things in a way that's easy to understand. The subject itself is challenging, but he provides all the resources and help you need to succeed, so you'll make it if you put in the work on your part.

Quite honestly the greatest science teacher at southern. PERIOD. He records every lecture, has a fantastic amount of resources for practicing your skills, gives you a copy of his own tailored notes, and lectures are fantastic even for those with a weakness in chemistry. 10/10 would take again

By far, the best professor in terms of teaching style here at Southern Adventist University. Unfortunately, there's a rumor that he's going to work at another university after this school year. But even so, he's amazing. It's almost as if God came down from heaven and taught me organic chemistry.

If you have the honor to have Barnhurst as your Ochem prof, this well known difficult class can be your highest semester grade-like me! His extraordinary teaching method allows for all learning styles to succeed. He also supplies you with so many resources, it's all up to you whether or not you succeed. He will be missed, leaving Southern May 2019.

Ochem is not an easy subject, but he makes it seem so much easier!! His teaching materials are super organized, and on top of that, he gives us SO MUCH additional material (most of them optional) so you don't have to go looking for practice. He is an awesome professor who allows his students to focus on learning, not looking for what to learn.

Dr. Barnhurst takes a difficult concept, finds ways students understand it better, and teaches it that way. He has created his own textbook using notes and past experiences with students, and includes many helpful tips/tricks. What is normally a super difficult class is made fun. Go to class. You have to study/memorize a lot, but it's manageable.

Dr. Barnhurst is quite possibly the best professor I've ever had. He isn't an easy teacher, he teaches us how to work for our understanding and our grade. However, he takes this subject and breaks it down into understandable and manageable pieces so every student can succeed. He is always willing to answer questions and explains things very well.

While this class is not as easy as everyone says it to be, Dr. Barnhurst really helps nail each concept and instills a love for problem solving. Dr. Barnhurst is without a doubt the best professor/teacher I've ever had. He makes difficult concepts easy to learn and provides all the materials you could need to ace his class and fully understand the concepts (which should be the most important thing anyways). He is eager to help you understand the information and always available to help out.

Professor Barnhurst provides students with an exceptional learning experience. He emphasized what we needed to know and specified what we didn't. His practice tests and quizzes covered the exact material that was on the test so we could better prepare. His voice is memorable (not monotone) and he makes stupid noises too. He is an amazing teacher.

If you practice with the abundance of learning materials and opportunities that he makes available, your grade will improve. He is funny, enthusiastic, & he cares. All his labs are applicable to the class and actually enhance learning. He tells interesting worship stories, which helps to make him more approachable.

I took Organic Chemistry from this professor. He honestly taught this class easier than most professors would. He does make you work for the grade, but he provides a lot of extra help if it's needed. He makes lectures interesting, and keeps your attention by making his students interact during lectures.

Dr. Barnhurst genuinely cares for his students and tries his best to help them succeed. He went through the textbook, condensed it, and made notes to fill in as he lectures which is all you really need for the test so you don't actually have to spend so much money on the real textbook! He's one super cool dude and his stories are great!

O-Chem is intimidating, but he makes it doable and gives a lot of practice problems if it wasn't for all the resources he makes I would not have made it through.

Dr. Barnhurst is the O-Chem MASTER!! The clarity and specificity of his lectures are amazing and you will never have an excuse to not practice because he makes tons of resources available to his students. He comes up with so many creative ways to help his students remember important concepts. Also, he raps. End of story.

Dr. Barnhurst is an O-chem legend who has pretty much perfected his craft. There are just some people who are born to be teachers, and he is one of them. Though I had extremely high expectations due to his outstanding reputation, he met and exceeded them. What could be an extremely hard class is doable due to his abundance of help and resources.

Dr. Barnhurst really cares about his students. By the very first lab class, he had already memorized all of his students' names. Every test, he gives you 3% extra if you study for 30 min a day, 5 days a week. His method of explaining hard concepts makes it doable even for the people who are not naturally smart.

He is very interested in your success and is willing to work with you outside of class to ensure your understanding. Hes very down to earth and provides you with a lot of extra optional practice work if you dont fully understand a concept. He also provides recordings of each lecture that you can watch back for help.

There is lots of homework, but all the assignments help you to understand and apply what you learned during lecture. The professor is inspirational by starting each class with a devotion, that is encouraging and entertaining. His lectures are amazing because he incorporates quirky ways to remember concepts and it is very organized.

Amazing Professor. Cares so much about students and teaches O-Chem in a way that is relatable and easy (as easy as ochem can be) to understand. He gives examples that help difficult topics more memorable. I truly feel as if I could do well on a comprehensive final at the end of this course with no-cramming- showing how much I learned in class.
