Makes people interested in politics. Great speaker
This man missed his calling in life when he became a prof. He really should have been a comedian. He's very helpful and cares to see you do well in class assuming you'll work for it.

True! So, true. I look forward to his lectures so I can laugh hard at his open mic lectures! You can so tell he really wants to be a comedian. Also hot!
Let me just say this... I wanted to be a poli sci major BEFORE I took this course! But now that I'm taking it, I'm doubting my decission... I really don't like the way he does his lectures - I find them all over the place and confusing.
Amazing speaker. Lectures with ease and clarity. Knows his stuff. Can be a very funny guy. Class can be a little boring however. Do not like the style of overheads... I think the material that needs to be covered in this theoretical course is what makes it boring, not the prof.
Excellent prof, excellent lectures. Also hilarious.
im not too fond of his teaching style. he does a lot of examples that i have no clue of. unless you know your politics, you'll be lost at times of lecture. however, i would say he knows his info and sometimes, its nicely presented. reasonable test q's
Although the material in the course isn't the best, King does what he can. He's hilarious (he says 'my bad'!) and obviously brilliant. Plus I respect him for his references to "Dr Strangelove" and "A Hearbreaking Work of Staggering Genius". Also, hot in a dorky/cute way :)
Not such a bad teacher, however EXTREMlEY boring! The slides on webct really help when taking notes, but NEVER post any bad comments on the discussion boards, he RIPS people up(in a very rude way!)After the break in classes only about 50% of ppl stay at lecs. Online tests are also good = no midterms
Dr. King is a great Prof. I like his style of teaching and his lectures are interesting. The students that do not like him, maybe are in the wrong class. Lectures are also straightforward and clear.
Prof. King is a terrible prof, he has a huge ego and thinks he knows everything and should run the world. Do not take this course, you will learn nothing, especially if you have Chris Cattle as a tutorial instructor.

Very smart, knowledgable, and funny prof. The problem was, I also had his as my T.A. and let me mention, he was a very hard marker. As a prof though, he was pretty good atleast what I could see from the 1.5 lectures I went to.
His lectures sound like a narrative and there little to no clarity or direction in them. It's terribly difficult to force yourself to stay for the whole lecture let alone actually show up in the first place. The material of the course is great, his presentaiton just butchers it.
Enjoyed the lectures I went to, but, he often went off of topic, and did not follow the "standard" first year course for the subject. Just go to tutorials and ignore lectures and its fine.
This prof was an idiot.. He didnt know how to teach or what to teach and his online notes were pointless. Sure he's probably a smart guy I won't deny that but man he didnt know how to share his smarts. He shouldnt be a teacher
The only thing that was good was that I did pretty well somehow for only making it through 1.5 of his boring lectures. Terrible prof, incredibly egotistic, and one of the most immature people I've ever met. Not impressed. Teach yourself, go to tutorials, and you can do ok though.
lectures got a little tiresome. brilliant man. learned more in his tutorials than anywhere else. read up on political philosophy before you go to his class so you will get the jokes. otherwise the lectures are "nasty, brutish and.." long!
Sarcastic as hell, I found him to be completely ****ing hilarious.
He was interesting and funny to listen to, but i found him a bit hard to follow and his course didn't seem very organized.. he went off on a lot of tangents. Also the powerpoint notes were very hard to follow.
Hard to follow, but a really funny guy... i certainly enjoyed his sarcaism... but drove me nuts what he was teaching
Great class, I had him a my TA and found him to be a fair marker. Although the course material was a little dense, you can get through it as long as you apply yourself. I really enjoyed his lecture style. Loren I really enjoyed the class, you are the best prof I had this year.
Phenomenal professor. Taught an incredibly unique introductory class, rather than standard theory and the same old predictable theorists. Used Monty Python to talk about legitimacy...awesome. Take his class for an excellent starting point to an education in political science.
He's a funny guy (although he is very cocky). His lectures are funny but you won't learn much. Expects too much from his quizzes, but his final was fairly easy.

I have this prof for the first time. I am having such problems in this course, understanding him and the material, but am too afraid to approach him, based on the responses he has given others who have approached him. He just needs to slow down and maybe have some sort of notes posted during his lectures.
Can't follow him at all!! He needs some sort of guidelines or set points to follow.
I love this prof! He is hilarious and brilliant. (I think he's cute too)! I hope I have him for more political science classes. He teaches a creative and engaging class. Thanks Dr. King!
He is the funniest professor that I have EVER had. His course is unique in that his lectures do not fuel lengthy notes. You just have to take him in and think about what he says in reflection of the other material. Any prof who makes an allusion to Wham! deserves the biggest plaque in the world!!!
Finite math equations have no place in a first year ARTS class. Other than that...interesting individual, yet practically nobody stayed after the break or even went to class.
Very funny teacher, but he is sometimes unclear

I think that if he really wanted to, he could pick up a desk and hurl it across the room with his mind.

Dr. King is an egotistical #$%&*. He is extremely unhelpful and makes students feel stupid if they dont understand one of his far fetched concepts. There is more to intelligence than knowing your material, you also need to be able to teach it. I am surprised they allow Dr. King to teach a first year intro course.
Gets off track quite easily. But for the most part good prof.
Solid teacher, although he might drift off and be hard to follow i think hes a solid, funny guy.
Hard to follow. I dont think I came out of his class with any more knowledge then I had when it stared.
You people below are just bitter. They aren't "HIS" far fetched concepts; rather they are fundamental concepts of political science. You are better prepared to 'do' political science having taken his course and for that you should be thankful. To the person who felt he learned nothing in the class: you must be staggeringly brilliant.
The worst prof. I mean, he seems like a great guy and is pretty funny, I do enjoy the little stories...but those get a little annoying. I don't understand what he is talking about half the time and is teaching us like we are upper years. He neeeds to learn to teach more effectively to us. This makes me not want to take poli sci again, which sucks.

A very funny man, but my friends are funny too and they can't teach either.
Nice guy... but don't expect your notes to make any sense. Just do the assignments, which are relatively simple and you'll be fine. PS. If you have any heads-up about the next class involving math... skip it.
Good guy...but wow he loves to go on rants about peasant rebellions. If you plan on your major being poli sci please be aware that there is a Statistcs math vomponent in 2nd year...its NOT easy especially if you're not a math person...but he is a good. tends to keep you intereted.
Very good class.
lectures were awesome, but not too helpful if you just like to copy down notes (which i never do, so i didnt mind). i find just listening to his explanations and relative examples helps drive the point home. i wanna see some footage of him debating with noam chomsky. he doesnt seem to be the typical new england university prof type, lets say.
One of the smartest profs at Laurier, though highly unappreciated. He is engaging and hilarious, and his passion is infectious. Don't expect to be spoon fed with power point slides; he'll teach you to pick out important points and enjoy the rest. Exams test actual knowledge and critical thinking, not memorization skills.
Dr. King is an inspiring and interesting professor who is clearly passionate about teaching. His enthusiasm adds greatly to the learning environment and his lectures are always engaging. Some of the material he covers is certainly challenging, so a close reading of the sylabus is recommended. Overall - definitely one of my favourite profs at WLU.
He was clearly brilliant, and a funny guy to listen to, however for the majority of his class i had no idea what he was talking about. He makes political science a lot more confusing than it has to be, I came out with an A but i still have no idea how that happened.
Dr King embodies the idea of the perfect university professor. He is passionate about the material, but more importantly, he is passionate about sharing the material with his students. His classes motivate me to think deeply about the topics and relate them to my life. I am grateful to have had him as my teacher, and would take any class he taught.
All around great prof, though you may want to brush up on your discrete mathmatics before taking his class
fun teacher but goes on random rants about like mathematical theorems...in poli sci class!!! Extremly cheesy jokes but their so bad that they're funny. i would totally take the class again.
he actually does really good summaries, so if you focus on what he's saying and really listen, you'll be golden. so all i will say is that he's rediculously smart, loves playing devils advocate and is overall a great prof. he pushes you to think in a way that makes you feel like you are actually at university.
He is to smart for his own good and does nothing but confuse the class. Although I love listening to him...I walk away from the class knowing I'm screwed for the exam because he just taught me nothing.
Dr. King is one of the best profs I have ever had. He is lenient with extensions and due dates as long as you have a reason... He can be hard to follow in lecture, but will help students whenever possible.
Dr. King will be one of the only profs while you're an undergrad to treat you as if you are intelligent. If you can't handle his teaching, chances are you're not intelligent.
Dr. King is one of the best professors I have ever had. He is alway willing to help and has very thoughtful and insightful ways of conveying information. His pop culture references are well placed and always amusing.
Dr. L. King. is perhaps the most intellegent person I have met to date. He is inspiring, motivating and if I can embarrasingly say, sexy (most girls in the polisci department agree). The content he teaches is tough, so you should love to read and be prepared to argue. Dr. King is basically WLU's King.
Its true. He is incredibly intelligent and damnn SEXY. However, its very difficult to follow along in his lectures, so keep your ears open! His tests are difficult. His MC questions are a pharagraph long! Overall, he was inspiring and a great teacher, but hard to follow. He was very entertaining!
A genius. An inspiration. A damn sexy man.
airyoudishunn (inside joke) Yes, he's erudite. Like others have said, a bit hard to follow. But brilliant and freakin hilarious.
best prof at Laurier
Lectures are clear if you pay attention, which isn't hard because he is very entertaining. I find with his papers if you suck at writing papers and are used to getting C's you'll get a B- and if you are used to getting A's you'll get a B+. When in doubt on his papers, just regurgitate what he said in class, he will love you for it.
Lectures are literally all over the place. He is entertaining and interesting. Grades fairly, seemingly, and doesn't surprise you with anything. Just do the readings and make sure you understand and it'll all be ok. It is incredibly difficult to take lecture notes because of the incoherence, but if you understand the readings you'll be fine.
Probably the worst prof at WLU that I've had... completely incoherent lectures, no one ever goes, talks more about star trek than anything useful to my knowledge, all over the map, totally overwhelming... do not take a class with him unless its mandatory (like several of his are for me, unfortunately).
such a cool guy, yes he goes on tangents but he has an amazing grasp of the material he teaches and his passion makes you want to learn. He is very approachable so talking to him if you have any questions is a good option
I took PO235 last semester and found Dr. King's class to be very difficult and hard to succeed in however, this past semester was a huge turn around as it was clear Dr. King was truly interested in helping students work to the best of their ability and he made a conscious effort to be more clear and concise regarding the material. Bravo, Dr. King!
GREAT prof! My favorite at Laurier. The only downside is if you aren't already interested in the subject matter, you may be a little lost. But otherwise, incredible.
He is honestly the man, his lectures are super interesting as he does his best to provide high energy.
What can I say about Dr. King. This was a mandatory class for me, and all Poli-Sci students, and he made it nearly impossible. His lectures were incoherent and most learning was done via the TAs. He later posted a rant on our online learning portal complaining of how lazy students were being.
He's a smart guy, but he's all over the place and he never gives strict deadlines which is annoying.
King is honestly the man. I've had him for more classes than any other professor in my university career, and he's probably in my top 3 favorite profs. The smartest guy, really understanding with deadlines, helpful, and gives great lectures. Sometimes he's a little hard to follow- but if you pay attention and ask questions you'll kill his classes.
Awesome! He is hilarious and talks about fun stuff and things with course material.
He's an amazing professor, he definitely gets of tangents and can be kind of confusing in class but is very clear about his expectations. I really love his lectures, even though I could do without the cold-calling. Absolutely love him, his projects are fair, and he is helpful if you are confused. He really tries to get you to think! Plus he's hot.
King makes the best out of the driest material. He's super funny, and even though lecture can seem long some days, he definitely knows how to keep students awake, despite his tendency to go on tangents. The assignments were fair and required students to come to class to fully grasp the material. Not only is this man brilliant, he's also super hot!
He was amazing, I really appreciated his feedback. I did not even realize how well I could do in a theory course.
Shout out to Loren King for being an absolute gem. His grading scheme is so great and he is very flexible about deadlines. He gives you great feedback and advice, and is one of the nicest professors I have ever met!
All he does it talk about how his wife and his children are great. MIT, Harvard, how superior he is to everyone and wastes 20-30 minutes of each class posturing and seeking validation for his "accomplishments." I wanted to love this class but he totally destroyed the content. Take PO350 with anyone BUT Loren King.
He's a jokes guy who really cares about the material he teaches. He gives really easy assignments and only cares that you show that you're grappling with the material. Also, no exams.
Amazing guy, not a great teacher. He goes on crazy rants and I have no understanding of the actual material. He also doesn't use slides so the lectures are all over the place and that much more confusing. I promise you will leave lectures confused and not gaining much knowledge. Like I said though, really good person and he has a good heart!
Amazing prof who can make dry content exciting. Also this man has seen every movie so be ready for him to recite lines in lecture.
Dr. King has truly been able to make me want to learn more, he took a dry class and made it not only interesting but also quite thought-provoking. I would love to take another one of his courses in the future. Do the readings, pay attention to online lectures and the quizzes are a breeze
Dr. King is wonderful. He tries his best to make somewhat boring matrial excited and gives all students a chance to do very well. Theres no reason no t to finish the class with a high grade! Awesome prof.
Cool prof and makes lectures interesting. However he can go off on tangents like in one lecture we ended up talking octopuses, like okay whatever? Im fine with that. Most of your mark is based on participation, so do the readings and engage with it. Extremely flexible and understanding, and will accomodate students. Thanks for teaching during COVID
Loren is the best prof I had at Laurier. He really cares about his students and has been more than accommodating during the pandemic. Furthermore, he is very understanding and is passionate about what he teaches. This guys a goat.
Probable one of the best profs I have had so far. He's extremely understanding and is willing to help students that are struggling in the course, and quite flexible with due dates on assignment. Cheers and thanks for teaching during COVID
Dr. King was the nicest prof I've ever had. He is so understanding and accommodating to the current situation of the semester. He gave us multiple options and opportunities to do well and to better fit our learning style. He was very fun and engaging, but the lectures can be a bit confusing/boring as he goes on tangents but they can be funny.
Despite being unclear at times, he cares deeply about his students and wants us to succeed. I really enjoyed him, he was funny, kind, caring and really flexible with grading and assignments. He can be a bit hard to follow, but his quizzes and assignments were always fair. Overall a great prof, take him regardless of the course.
all i had to do was read and some easy quizzes, king is a king
I think Dr. King is a brilliant individual who is super fascinated by political theory and history and has a great sense of humour. However, I found his lectures to be quite wordy and over-the-top when explaining basic concepts. I found myself more confused after I left his lectures because of the complex wording. A bit disorganized in general too.
Explanations were generally long-winded and left you more confused with a bunch of additional tangents not relevant to the actual assignments. King is clearly interested in the philosophical and historical roots here but I feel it fell flat at times in relation to modern politics and applicability to current events.
His lectures are confusing and hard to follow, but he is caring about his students and their success.
King is a king, he is always there to assist in any way possible and always there for his students. I would 100% take a course with him again.
King's lectures can be a bit wordy, but he's clearly passionate about the material. Stay engaged, use the textbook, and tools like unstuckstudy - they really help make the content click. Not the easiest class, but worth it if you put in the work.
While he does some meandering during lecture, he is clearly passionate and excited about teaching. He is engaging and entertaining. Assignments and tests are very reasonable. King is a king for sure!
changed our Syllabus 3 days after course drop date. has us reading 300 pages on average A WEEK. his lectures are impossible to follow, his slide decks are just words pasted in random spots. he dosent tell you how your graded. you get no marks back. overall this course and prof is horrible, there is no organization and the expectations are Crazy!!!
No grading criteria, dosent believe in giving 100s but believes in 0s and marking people on whatever he feels like because hes so philosophical...(barf). lectures are so boring and hes impossible to follow along with. horrible professor.
King is NOT king. By week 11, we only had 10% of our grade back. Basically a philosophy class + hundreds of readings, then were told on w/10 that we weren't being graded for them? TAs don't even know what class they were TAing, finally, From king himself "I'm on tenure, I can do whatever I want + I can't run for office, the things they'd find out"
Loren King, although he is passionate about what he talks about is overall not a good professor. He expects us to read 300 pages a week, but by the end of the course told us we did not actually have to do them fully. His lectures are overly confusing and dont match the ones posted on MYLS. The Ta's were also super unhelpful. Good luck.
Worst professor ever. He gave us an alternative assignment to complete to boost our grade, and then, when a bunch of people actually submitted it, he said he's not going to mark it because he didn't expect this many people to submit it. His lectures are impossible to follow and boring. TA's were useless, and so was he. Don't take this prof!
this guy has no clue what hes doing. he posts random announcements, theres no clear grading criteria, he switches everything around at all times. he has posted, unposted, reposted grades over and over with every repost meaning something new. avoid him and his classes at all costs. worst class ive ever taken
only prof to post an alternative assignment in order for people to boost there grades then decides hes not marking them because "to many people submitted it". wasted all our time, not just the paper, the whole class is a waste of time. horrible prof and seems like a horrible guy. just because your tenured dosent mean you can do whatever you want
Loren King is loud, disorganized, and often disrespectful, brushing it off by saying he has tenure. His lectures and notes are confusing, though quizzes and assignments are easy. To pass, use Perusall, attend tutorials, and study key philosophers. Wouldn't recommend. poor teaching overall.
He's a king for sure
I'm going to be very honest and say Loren king is a good person but a bad professor. His lectures are very disorganized I stopped going to them, and relied completely off his lecture readings and doing well in tutorials ( so don't feel bad about not going to class) you'll do good as long as you just make notes on his lecture notes posted.
Summary: don't go to class rely only lecture notes (his lectures are confusing, and the lecture notes will help for quizzes and the exam), try and participate as much as in tutorials this will bump up your mark), also the exam was much better than I thought so my advice is just try and keep up a little bit with the content throughout the course.
King is not a king! I ended the class with a pretty strong mark and only went to max 10 lectures, I did all the persuall, talked in my tutorials (a decent amount), did decent on the quizzes, and for the final exam, I studied completely off the lecture notes, which is a great help! It's the lecture but in written form and way more organized!
Chill guy, bad prof though. I went to most of his lectures, and his slides were all over the place, so I just stopped going after a while. However, I did much better on the exam than I thought, unlike the quizzes which had questions the size of paragraphs. I studied two days before the exam + a cheat sheet, so don't worry too much.
Dr. King is clearly a very smart and capable lecturer. His lecture slides were a bit unhelpful, and he has a tendency to jump around a bit or trail off while explaining things, but the lectures were entertaining every week. I did not open the Perusall/textbook all semester, and I still got an A-.
Overall not a great prof. His lectures are incredibly hard to gain information from. But he does mark you based off of 4 online quizzes, tutorial participation and the final. You get a cheat sheet for the exam and everything is from the lecture notes which he posts. It is not hard to achieve an B or higher in this class.
