She is amazing! I wanted to get more in touch with what Chican@ studies is and she did a fantastic job doing that. The books you really don't need to read, only the "Foreigners" for a paper. She's inspired me to add CHI studies as a part of my double major. She's sweet, approachable and funny. Take the class at least for GE's
Great class and she has an amazing fashion sense
Very interesting class. The midterm and final are fairly easy b/c she tells you the main points of every lecture, and the finals are just 3 ID's and a essay where you could choose from 2 topics. My TA was harsh on grading the essays, but the other TA's were easy graders. Definately an easy A and you learn a bunch!
great lecturer! :) extremely passionate about her subject and very knowledgeable. unfortunately, not enough time to go over everything she covers in class! :( love her focus on chicanas within the chicano movement, as their stories are usually hidden. would take a class with her again.
Dr. Marquez isn't the greatest lecturer, but her classes are still interesting. I took this for GE's and it's one of the best I've taken so far. There's only one midterm & final. Papers aren't long at all (2 pages) and for the final paper you just have to expand on the previous one. The final wasn't cumulative either. Overall, I highly recommend!
She's a great professor who cares about her students. Her midterm and final are the same format and not bad. Take this class for an interesting and easy GE.
Really amazing teacher! Has a true passion for the subject. She lectures straight with no other materials to reference so you HAVE to go to class, but if you go to class and do readings midterm and final are a piece of cake (she gives you the questions beforehand). Definitely recommend!!!
She was okay. Since she's a historian a lot of her information included dates so be sure to memorize them and include them in the midterm and final. She graded work really quick and she is organized.Downfall? She gave a lot of wrong information such as Puerto Ricans can vote and she said she would follow up with info but never did. Can't be perfect
Proff M is one of the best professors I learned from and encountered. She is very helpful during office hours and is very nice too. She is also very pretty and humble. Take her if you want to learn about great chicano related stuff.
CHI23 was suuuuuuuper easy, just take it.
I LOVE MARQUEZ! I took her over summer session which I think made this class a little easier (smaller class size, more one-on-one with the prof). Literally just come to class, listen to her lectures, and spit it out word for word on the midterm/final and you will get an A. Plus you will learn a LOT and it will change how you see the world 4ever!
Professor Marquez is a very good teacher. The class is easy, but you still have to work for your grade to some extent. Also, you will learn a lot. Highly recommend this class to anyone.
Easy easy A, boring class. It made me feel like I was in high school again, at times we would literally do nothing. Attendance is mandatory however, there is still work for this class but it is so easy. Shes also very generous with grading and gives out a lot of As. Shes also a great lecturer but the class and subject is just boring
Easiest class I have ever taken. Midterm and final where she gives a study guide of exactly what's going to be on the exams. DON'T BUY THE READER IT COSTS 50 DOLLARS. I got an A in the class and didn't even open it. Everything that's in the midterms are covered during class. Show up and you'll get an A.
This was by far the EASIEST and CHILLEST class I've ever taken at Davis. Dr. Marquez is funny and her lectures are history-intensive, but very interesting. She gives a lot of opportunities for extra credit. Only 1 midterm, 1 paper, and final, but pretty easy. Don't buy the reader; just show up, take notes, and you're good to go! Loved Dr. Marquez!
Doesn't post lecture material. No laptops allowed in class. Dates and specificity are important so pay attention. As for the prof herself, she is not approachable or helpful. I went to OH once to get clarification on material and she refused to answer my questions and was rude and condescending the entire time I was there. I wouldn't recommend.
I didn't like her lecture style. There is almost on info on the slides so you have to listen to every word she says and take notes. No laptops allowed in class either. Midterm and final both consist of 3 ID's and 1 essay. She gives you study guides of exactly what will be on the exams. Don't buy the reader!!!!!! All the info you need is in lecture.
best professor of my quarter. easiest class of my quarter. If you put in the effort, you will do great. You have to go to lecture because she does not post anything online, and her exams are 100% lecture based. Memorization is important. don't really need the reader. Essay prompts are simple. One essay, two exams. Final is not cumulative.
Ended up with over a 100% after receiving full points for every assignment+exam along with the 2.5% extra credit. That said, this class is going to be extremely easy for those who have already taken ochem and biochem. An hour or so of re-reading notes prior to the midterm/final and you'll be all set.
This was an amazing class! Especially if you are Chicano, it's incredible to learn about Chicano history. Professor Marquez is an awesome lecturer, and makes each lecture feel like she's telling a story. If you follow her suggestions to do well in the class, it's very easy to get an A. Inspirational to see how much she cares for her students.
Marquez' class is the easiest class I have ever taken at Davis. I never went to lecture and only showed up to discussion because I had to. The ID terms are super easy. I just looked them up online the day before and studied them. Paper and projects are a breeze. Highly recommend for an easy A
Professor Marquez is an amazing professor. I have taken her CHI10 class in the past, and wanted to learn more about Chicano history, so I took her CHI150 class. GO TO CLASS, or you will not do well on the midterms, as she does not post the material she goes over class. She is very willing to help students and she is an incredible professor!
Professor Marquez is very informational. She has a very good sense of humor and is extremely approachable during her office hours. I took this class for fall quarter and enjoyed every bit of it. The content is interesting and you do not need to be passionate about Chicano studies to enjoy the course. One midterm, one project, and final.
Nothing on power points so I hope you write quickly cuz no laptops. Very clear where she stands politically. Expects you to be able to write 2 full essays in an hour and 20 minutes for the midterm and final, I am an english lit major and that is completely unreasonable. No clear grading criteria. Docked points off for including facts in my intro?
Broke university regulations and administered final exam in class before final week. Finished lectures early though there was more to lecture on. Hasn't covered everything on syllabus but it is included on the final. Unprofessional, made her political stance clear the 1st day of class and cried. Takes 3 days showing movies to catch up on grading
I took this class through the honors program as a GE. I'm not Chicano, but I did enjoy learning about American history through a different perspective. It's a pretty easy A--just make sure to take good notes during lectures. She gives a study guide for exams--as long as you know all the key terms and prepare for the essay prompts, you're golden!
Loved Prof Marquez! Go to LECTURE! If you take good notes (because theres no information on slides), you're solid for the test. Lecture is NOT a drag, she's very inspirational and opens your eyes to the injustice toward the Chicano/a community. I was just taking this class to bump up my GPA, but because of her I decided to major in Chicano Studies.
If you want an easy grade, take this class. If you did not enjoy waterworks, poor pedagogy, and lack-luster history stay far away from this professor. She constantly reminds the class she is qualified (I wonder why) and delivers the worst lectures. This class was honestly a waste of time.
Decent Lecturer. She does make some mistakes though but everyone does. Interesting course (in my opinion). I might even take another class with her. Very easy class in general. It can be a nice GPA booster if needed.
Professor Maqruez clearly shows that she loves her job. She is very engaging and very compassionate to make a difference in the world.
You have to go to lecture because she doesn't do helpful powerpoints or lecture capture. Nevertheless, still a really interesting class and suuuuper easy to do well in. The midterm and final are the same format, you have to write about a few terms and then write an essay. You also have to read a book and write an essay on it, but it's super easy
she really takes control of her role as your professor and emphasizes the emotions behind the history. loved this class, taught me history about my people that i never learned anywhere else. very grateful to this professor and i can truly say i am better as a person because of this class. plus, super ge!! only downside is the reader (txtbook) is$50
Professor Marquez has very good lectures and the class is graded very easily, however, you do not learn anything from her slides, only her voice. This was very difficult, so if you do not take good notes then goodluck. You do NOT need to buy the book! I never opened it once, she covers the exact same things in lecture, save yourself some money.
This class is an easy A but you need to show up to class, or at least be able to memorize off of quizlet effectively. Reader is needed for discussion, which are also mandatory. Not much work at all and I really did enjoy its small projects. Take this class if you've got a busy 12 other units and need the GE requirements ( it fulfills a lot).
Her class is extremely straight forward as long as you go to class . No way you can pass if you skip lecture . Her PPT slides have no information on it; it is important for you to write down everything she says. One midterm, one final and one paper . She provides a study guide for both and always picks the easiest prompt . Easy A class .
Professor Marquez gives very thoughtful and interesting lectures. Tests were really easy as long as you showed up to class and did the study guide. Only one paper and creative assignment. Easy A and satisfies lots of GEs
I love Professor Marquez! She is not the most engaging prof but she is very practical, funny, passionate about her work. CHI 23 was extremely (almost painfully) easy. Nevertheless, it was an important class because we transcribed interviews of the Chicano Movement leaders that will soon, thanks to Dr. Marquez, be published in an archive.10/10 class
Of all the chi profs I've had, she was the most "strict" one. She graded only one assignment (others by TA) during the quarter and it was graded pretty harshly. She is a historian so she focuses a lot on the facts and dates. For your midterms and finals, do a lot of extra research for a good grade (although my TA was a super easy grader).
Professor Marquez was amazing when I took her in Fall 2017, her lectures reflect as a story and captivated me. Easy A if you attend class and discussion, assignments are easy and tests are easy if you go to lecture and skim readings.
This teacher is a joke. I've never had some one so disrespectful and lazy. Every thing was posted late and missing information. She gets a high score on ratemyprofessor because her class is so easy, but it's the biggest waste of time. Nothing is learned, no indepth analysis is given, and all questions asked are extremely biased.
(Spring 2020 online) This class by far is a GPA booster. There is only 1 midterm and a final (both are the same format). The term paper was also easy! They recommend to read the book sooner but you can still pull it off if you don't read it. Given that this class was online, Marquez handled it well. I don't blame her for tech issues. It happens.
Easy A.. There are long weekly reading assignments, but I just read what was necessary to do the essays and went along just fine. Grade is based on only few things, but there is 1 EC opportunity. I really appreciated her flexibility. I wouldve liked more interaction and excitement however. Overall easy class.
I really loved chi 10! It was my favorite class this quarter. Interesting lectures, fun discussions, 1 midterm and we had an optional final. We also wrote a 4-5 page essay about a fun novel. Professor Marquez makes this class really enjoyable!
I enjoyed Professor Marquez's lectures and I learned a lot about US history from a Chicano lens. She is a great lecturer and her online lectures were clear and concise. I enjoyed taking this GE!
Professor Marquez was very understanding during these unpreceded times. There was a good amount of reading, a book we had to read, and fair/simple midterms. The final paper was based on a interesting prompt form the book. The book was really intriguing! The lecture content was always interesting and Iearned a lot of new things. I recommend !
Loved this class. The class was easy and straightforward. 30-40 minute pre-recorded lectures. Discussion once a week. One midterm and one paper. Extra credit is offered and the final is optional!
Marquez is a great professor who taught me to have a greater appreciation for Chicano culture. The class is graded on 1 midterm, 1 paper on a book, discussion participation, and the final (optional this quarter). We had 48 hours to complete the midterm, and it was open notes. Easy A
This was my mandatory UHP class. She helped me learn about my background. The class itself was heavy on reading. My favorite reading was the assigned book, Always Running. It wasn't hard so it made it easier to learn. I just wish more was covered in an engaging way as opposed to just reading. My favorite part was presenting because I like talking.
Very straight forward course with a midterm, term paper, and final. The course was interesting as well, but has a lot of readings.
No textbook but still lots of reading especially for those who dont like that. Although, as someone who loves to read I really like the readings she had us do. Super inspirational. I loved the lectures honestly. Straight forward assignemnts. One presentation, one midterm, and a final term paper.
this class was soo chill. it was asynchronous for me, and there was barely any effort put in. i didn't listen to all the lectures, but the ones i listened to were super interesting. i also enjoyed the book. also your grade on your midterm can equal the one on the final, so i recommend working toward that <3 super easy GE & A so i TOTALLY recommend
Shes a very sweet person and a clear lecturer. Super interesting readings though there are a few. The book she assigned (for the final paper) is incredible. I learned so much about Chicanx history and I am beyond thankful to her. And its a relatively easy class
You should totally take chi10 as a GE. This class was so easy and didnt require much work. Discussion posts, a midterm, a paper and optional final. This class is very chill and Marquez is really good at explaining. I hate history, but this class felt like a friend was telling me a story. Surprisingly enjoyed this class a lot
Took this class online/asynchronous and it was VERY easy. Class consisted of midterm essay, final essay & a research paper, but midterm grade can be duplicated for final. I would say that I didn’t learn much but it was an easy A and a class I didn’t need to stress over.
She was a great lecturer and I enjoyed the class! Many days we ended class early and as long as you come to the lectures and take notes, you really shouldn't have any problems with writing the paper and midterm/final. She is extremely clear with what she wants and is easy to talk too, I definitely recommend this class!
Very passionate lecturer. Dictates her lectures so write fast and pay attention to the things she repeats. Lectures are very important for midterm and final. Lots of readings that are important for discussions. Very kind and caring professor who wants everyone to pass.
Excellent lectures. Attendance is mandatory in that there are no notes/recordings, and exams are based on lecture content. Midterm/finals are just 3 pages on the 5 W's based on lecture topics. Also quick group presentation in discussion on the week's reading.TAs might be a bit weird, mine suggested "I" statements in the final essay for some reason
No recordings, discussion participation grade, three total papers are only assignments/exams. Prof Marquez is a great lecturer and makes learning CHI history unlike normal history classes! Your grade is completely dependent on your TA but as long as you show up and try, you'll pass with no problem :)
Very easy class Easy A. She is sweet and an awesome professor. No lecture capture so you have to attend lectures. Midterm, writing assignment, and a final. Our final was optional! Interesting class learned a lot! TAKE HER!
Interesting class with only a few assignments (presentation, paper, midterm, and a final) Both the midterm and the final are based on her lectures so it's important to go since she doesn't record them. Also, READ THE BOOK THAT IS FOR THE FINAL PAPER PLSS!!! makes life sm easier.
I really enjoyed this class. It was informative and relived some stress from the heavier science classes I had.She made the final optional which was a huge blessing for me. Go to every single lecture, read the assigned book, and keep notes of each chapter. It will pay off in the end when you have to write about it. Take this class!
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE PROF MARQUEZ!! she's very inspirational and gives story telling lectures that are always so interesting. As long as you take good notes during lecture you'll be more than prepared for the midterm/ final. This class was super interesting and a easy GE. I recommend this professor if your truly interested in the subject.
Her lectures were very informative and you could tell she was passionate about the Chicana/o movement. There are few assignments. The midterm, final, and research paper refer to her lectures and class readings. So stay on top of those. The midterm grade can be duplicated for the final. Overall, it was a non stressful and interesting class.
Interesting and pretty easy class! You can tell Professor Marquez is passionate about the subject, she tries her best to keep the class engaging and stress-free. Only three assignments + a presentation in discussion, they really aren't bad at all, just take good notes and read the book and you'll be fine. Only downside is lectures aren't recorded.
dr marquez gives really great & interesting lectures, attendance not required but no recordings and everything she says is on the tests which are straightforward write ups about the topics covered, really straightforward assignments
Overall really easy class so long as u go to class and take notes and are decent at making an essay (final paper is on the book you read). I personally got away with only actually reading a couple of the assigned weekly readings. I love the passion she brings to the class, though and as a Chicano myself it made me feel connected to my culture.
Professor Marquez was amazing. She was very kind and understanding. The midterm is not as bad as it seemed. As long as you attend lectures, you will do fine. Read the novel and you will go great on your rough draft and final paper.
Professor Marquez is an amazing storyteller. She made her lectures very engaging. The midterm is not as bad as it seems, just go to the lectures and read the articles and you'll be fine. The final paper is easy once you follow her outline and read the novel.
If you are taking chi10, TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!! She is so passionate about Chicano history and it shows in her lectures. Her lecture style is storytelling which I found to be super helpful for note taking. As long as you go to class and take good notes you are set for an A in the class. By far my favorite class ever taken and super easy.
How can you say no to having Prof. Marquez. This is the best professor ever, take Marquez seriously. what an amazing professor!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great professor , understanding and open minded . Easy to relate to. Take home tests , extra credit opportunities, and a paper. Lots of reading assignments (weekly reading and a novel) but they're not hard at all( only need to skim). Guidelines for assignments and tests are very clear.
Sassy as hell but in the best way possible. Take her if you can. exams - easy || assignments - easy || discussion is mandatory but also easy || does not post lectures so be careful about that but the course is super chill and interesting. TAKE HER!
She taught a story while lecturing. She made the class engaging and fun through the group project that included an interactive game and a presentation, so everyone would be participating in discussion every week. Easy A if youre even semi-good at writing.
I thought Dr. Marquez was very passionate about what she was teaching, and her lectures were interesting and engaging. Workload and readings were manageable. Midterm and final were take-home exams. She does not record her lectures. Content on the midterm and final came from lectures, so make sure to attend them.
BEST PROFESSOR AT DAVIS!! No homework, easy take-home midterm, made the final optional. Easiest GE class I have taken. Do the work and you will get an A.
1 MT, final (optional), presentation and paper. Took the course for GE but came to love the topic she was teaching. Dr. Marquez is so passionate in what she does, and she is so understanding. Paper was on a novel we needed to read on our own time. Lectures were not recorded, her slides were mainly pictures so you kind of had to come to lecture.
Extra Credit. One Midterm. Optional Final. Intriguing Lectures. These are some of the factors that made this easily the best class I've taken this quarter. There was one essay due on a book she assigned, with a rough draft being mandatory and feedback provided it was very easy to pass. I loved how passionate she was with every lecture!
Such a wonderful professor! Her lecture style is like storytelling which makes her class fun and intriguing. An easy A as long as you show up to lecture and take good notes, read the novel she assigns, and do the weekly readings
Easy, just attend lecture. Final was optional thanks to TAs not wanting to grade as much. Make sure to pay attention to your files and copying and pasting the first midterm, accidentally submitted midterm prompt twice and got a D!
I took CHI 150 over the summer and although it went by fast, the professor made it very easy. Her lectures feel like you are hearing a story. Not much info on the slides she presents because what matters is what she explains. I took notes and attended class and it was super easy. I'd take her again!
Super easy, one paper, one reading, one project. Attendance wasn't mandatory, but lectures were not recorded.
One of the best professors I've had at Davis. I just took the class for a GE but ended up loving it! She teaches history from new perspectives that are refreshing and nuanced. I learned a lot from her class. She's also very kind and understanding. Definitely take the class if you can.
ABSOLUTELY such an amazing professor hands down. I took this class as a GE , not expecting much from it at first but i'm so glad i was wrong. She makes history fun and makes her students think. She genuinely cares for her students and will work with you if there is ever any issues. Overall one of the best prof i've ever taken at davis!
Clearly very passionate and caring professor. Took the class just for a GE but absolutely loved the course, TA included. Super engaging and interesting lectures!
Dr. Marquez is easily one of the best professors at UC Davis, I wish I could take her class again. Lecture attendance is not mandatory, but she does not record them. Coming to lecture did not feel like a chore, it was peaceful and intriguing since she considers herself a historian, and tells stories like one!
1 midterm and 1 final (optional and can be replaced by midterm). 1 graded rough paper and 1 final paper. exams are heavily based on lectures and you can only use lecture info (which isnt provided/recorded) so attending lecture is a must. if you attend lecture, EASY A. great lecturer as well, especially in connecting to the Chicano/Latino students.
Prof. Marquez is really good at making lectures interesting and is pretty lenient. Her lectures aren't recorded, but attendance isn't mandatory. Midterms and other assignments are simple enough and there isn't really a lot of work. But your grade really depends on how hard of a grader your TA is.
Discussion attendance is mandatory, but it's just one hour a week. I basically never showed up to lecture outside of week 1, and still managed to pretty easily get an A. take for an easy A.
Amazing professor! lecture is not recorded and midterm/final are based on lecture info. One midterm paper one final paper and one paper based off a book. The grading criteria is very clear. This professor was amazing and such an amazing person! The TA's are also there to help you and leave amazing advice on your work. I loved this class
