For a writing intensive class, it was easy. You had to write three 5 page essays, and 2 optional ones to raise your grade. If you have taken world history from 1500+, you already know the material. The only critique was Dr Reed thought she was an Eng professor. She grades extrememly hard. Even myself as an Eng maj thought she was overboard
She has favorites in the class, she is strict about tardiness/attendance, and she grades tough. I would not recommend that you take her.
She is a great teacher. She goes over all the important points in class and gives a study guide for the test - although you have to learn a lot about 10 topics and will only write on 1 or 2 for the essay test. There were 2 tests and 1 paper. All were difficult, she wants details and explainations for everything!
VERY good teacher. Her essays seem hard and overbearing, but they are not. Just take many notes and remember them. Then, write down exactly what she lectured on and you will get an A! Easy system. She is Extremely clear and very interesting to listen to.
Professor Reed is very knowledgable in her area of teaching. She lectures everyday the whole class period, but she makes it very interesting. You must attend class, the information that she provides is crucial for your blue book exams and papers. Take a lap top if you can, because there is tons of note taking.
She basically teaches you what you need to know for the tests. She gives study guides too. She claims to know a lot, but has some things distorted when it comes to the Church. Her class is EASY, but do not believe it all as TRUTH. Did learn some interesting things though.
Reed knew her subject very well and was a good lecturer. She was presumptuous and often rude for no apparent reason however. She is near the age of "the change" though - so maybe that had something to do with it. Otherwise, she would be a great teacher.
Gives you the questions ahead of time for the test so you know what your studying for. But this only makes her grade the tests at a higher level. She also assigns tests that are closely based on the textbook, so your screwed if you dont keep up on the reading. Also, she makes you feel stupid when you ask questions... So don't interrupt her!
Great professor, fantastic lecturer. I learned a lot in her class and find that I still retain a good amount of the knowledge. I liked the fact she gave a study guide with the questions on it.
She knows what she is talking about and her study guides are helpful, although she wants a lot of details and analysis. Liked her overall except she wasn't clear at all on what she wanted in the paper. Thought I understood what she wanted but I was really off! She is also a bit arrogant and can be a little sharp in her comments to students.
Teacher is knowledgeable, but expects you to pretty much memorize everything she lectures on. Be prepared for a lecture every day & be more prepared for essay exams. I am sure History Majors will love her, but for GE her expectations are way too high.
She's nice if you ask her for help. Gives study guide of 6-10 possible essay questions on tests, 2 will appear on test, pick 1. Textbook chapter online quiz every week-easy. Her lectures were ok. Got off topics sometimes.
I loved every minute of the class. She blends all of her lectures with humor and enthusiasm and also seems like someone you'd love to hang out with sometime. I loved how she integrated her stories of growing up into the material. Like others said, she grades hard but she also wants us to succeed and is trying to make us better students in doing so.
She is a great teacher. Every lecture is like storytime. I took lots of notes, the tests are a little demanding and there are two papers that are 3-4 pages long. I wouldn't suggest missing class too much unless you have a buddy to swap notes with. You can miss a lot of material from one absence, but she does not take attendance if the class is big.
Hard class but it was what i expected for an Upper Division unit. Go to class, take good notes, read ahead of time and you should do fine. She gives tons of info, lectures till the end of class, grades fairly hard (but fairly) but overall her classes are very interesting. 1 midterm/final and 2 papers. outlines and study questions available
First of all, Professor Reed doesn't ask for more from her students then any other competent college professor. If you want an easy ride, you shouldn't be in college. Her lectures are awesome, crystal clear, funny, and witty. Pretty straightforward class, pay attention take notes, study hard and you will do well. I highly recommend her.
Lectures are the best part of her class, she is an excellent lecturer. You need to know EXTENSIVE depths of information to get an A in this class. Class is hard work...period, but its also interesting.
Well worth my money. She made me want to learn about history. She was very helpful and fun. It was great. I would definitely recommend her for this class in particular.
Would highly, highly recommend her for writing intensive or specifically for this class.
Very interesting class, and Reed keeps you interested in the subject. Got a B+ and I learned a great deal of information. If your looking for an easy breezy class, don't take her, because you'll have to study and learn, and with her, you'll enjoy doing that
It is writing intensive and she is a writing fiend. The lectures are very interesting and she knows what she's talking about. I would love to take her again if I could. Turn off your phone, and be ready to take lots of notes (you'll need them come the exams). Fair grader too.
Show her respect and act like an adult and she will show you respect. I took her for my writing intensive class; even though the topics were difficult, she does grade fairly. I actually got an A in the class!!
I thought she was a great history teacher, prob the best I've ever had. She is very passionate and enthusiastic about history. Go to lectures, just a couple papers, her test are essay. She is very fair in her grading and definitely wants her students to do well in her class. She is always easy to come up to and talk.
LOVE HER! She's a really good teacher who is also really nice. TOTALLY COOL! TAKE HER IF YOU CAN!!!
She is a fantastic lecturer and enthusiastic about her subject. Do not do stupid things like come in late and walk right in front of her while she is lecturing. Do the reading, spend time on your writing assignments and attend class, and you will probably be fine.
The best professor I have had at Sac State. Had her for my writing intensive class and she made it a very doable experience. She is a fantastic lecturer and a very interesting person to talk to. Don't be intimidated by her -- take any class that she teaches.
The absolute best History Profesor I have ever sat in on.
Professor is a great lecturer and fun to listen to, but once you get to the tests and quizzes you won't recognize any of it because her lectures dont cover that material. Instead you must read ALL the books to succeed, which makes showing up to class seem irrelevant. Don't take her unless you plan to read A LOT.
great professor.
Hmm kinda hard class but doable if you put in work... she alright..
if you have a question you need to go to her office hours, she is horrible at returning e-mails. Her paper instructions are different from any other teacher I have ever had, ex:no quotes, the conclusion is not really a conclusion, ect.
umm, can you make your quizzes any harder? i really didn't have a problem with Reed, but her teacher's assistant was so incredibly mean to me, and graded so unfairly. i ended up getting 300/375 in the class and my report card reads: C+. Really? I don't even care I won't ever take her again.
She expects you to be responsible and do what she asks. Her quizzes are online, so make sure you actually read the book before taking them. Her midterm is based on her lectures so make sure you pay attention and take notes. She makes history interesting and I enjoyed her lectures. Don't text in class or she will point you out...
Dr. Reed was very knowledgeable. She used online quizzes based off of the textbook, so reading the book was imperative. The midterm and final were based off of her lectures, but she put all of the essay questions online weeks in advance so there was plenty of time to draft the perfect essay. Do not take her class unless you are willing to work.
Awesome. I learned so much in this class! Reed truly helps students become better writers.
Dr. Reed means well, but is very particular about what she wants.. Class felt rushed, and when I finally got her structure down for what she wanted in an essay; the semester was 3/4ths over. I do not feel this class improved my writing, nor did I learn much new material about ancient women. Unfortunate too, because I know Reed knows her stuff...
Take this class if you really want to learn a lot, but if you're looking for an easy A then look elsewhere. Professor is a tough grader, assigns lots of reading, has quizzes to follow-up with readings as well. If you want to actually develop a solid understanding of Roman History take this class and try hard. If you just want an A in a GE then dont
If you want an A, don't take this class. She has 5 online quizzes that are extremely hard. Attendance is not mandatory, but if you miss class, you better have the book handy. She has 3 essays which you can use one page of notes. And other short essays with no notes. She is very nice, her lectures are hard to follow. Caution when taking this class.
Don't like history but this was a great class. You will need to buy the books. She gives quizzes on the readings. Her exams are hard but I learned a lot. She's nice and was really helpful.
She is really nice, but exams are extremely hard. Must attend class to truly understand the material. One paper required which was very difficult since she didn't really help much on it and was not clear on what she was looking for. Not that impressed as a whole for the class.
This is a hard class. You have to put a lot of work into this class. If you are looking for an easy A general ed class, don't take this class. She expects a lot and was not very helpful. Quizzes are based of readings. There was 1 midterm, 1 final, and 1 paper. The midterm and final are very hard. Overall she is the worse professor I have ever had.
You have to spend at least 3 hours a week reading the material that will be on her quizzes or you will not pass them. Paying attention is required and the class is extremely difficult. You have to listen to lecture and take notes the entire time or you will miss vital information. a lot of reading required as well as class attendance.
She's very knowledgeable and approachable. One of the hardest classes that made me work for my grade. Learned a lot. Exams and midterms can be tricky, but this class you MUST put time into it-otherwise prepare to fail.
HARDEST GRADER EVER. This class is entretaining but don't take it just for fun. If you are going to take this class be prepared to study your butt off. This is not a class for the light of heart. Professor Reed Expects a lot from her students and she grades accordingly.
Super hard class, but she's such a good teacher. Her midterm/final are really hard. Basically have to know everything she's said in the class. The hardest thing is probably the paper she assigns. Her explanation is super vague and no one knows what she wants. But shes super cool and pretty funny. Can't miss a class though!
I'm an A student, or at least I was until I took this class. Avoid at all costs!!!
Great instructor. I learned a lot there's a moderate amount of reading. Take this class if you are really interested in the subject. Try not to miss class and you'll do fine.
DONT TAke THIS CLASS!! Worst class if u hate HISTORY!! Im a 3.8 student and i hated this class as well as many others i sat next to. Test are Essays. Quizes r OK. Midterm essay. SHES hard. A LOT OF READING ALOT!! Please save yourself and dont take her. She is hard. ill prolly end up with a b- or c.
Attendance and detailed note taking is MANDATORY. If you miss one class you are screwed. The information to answer essay exam questions are 100% from your lecture notes. You will NOT find adequate info in the textbook. I received a 96% for the midterm and 98% on the final. She is the best instructor I've had at Sac. She gives interesting lectures.
Very good lecturer - tough grader but fair. Keep up with the reading and follower her instructions regarding essays-she should be considered English/history professor.
Dr. Reed may be one of my favorite professors at CSUS. She is kind, relatable, concise and passionate. Her class is challenging but you will learn a lot. Pay attention to assignment details and pace the work and you'll be fine.
I loved her class. She's funny & her lectures are entertaining. I hardly opened my books only for reference. If you attend every class & take good notes, your good. Quizzes are pretty simple. You have to write essays for the midterm & final. One paper is assigned also. I recommend her for sure.
Great lectures, knowledgeable, grades exams fairly but her papers are MISERABLE. Even after getting approval on both my thesis statement and outline and meeting in person to discuss the paper I still got a C! I normally write A papers, even after that course i still had NO CLUE how to meet her ridiculously high expectations on essays.
History of Ancient Greece. 6 quizzes, 2 papers, 2 in class midterms. Basically, cut in half. 24 pt quiz 8 questions. She expects you to be a history major and be able to memorize all details and analyze what happened different from what you read. Didnt like her style at all for teaching when this is a GE class.
Overall she is an amazing teacher especially for an upper division class and expects a lot out of her students. if you hate reading I DO NOT reccommend this professor because that's practically what the entire class is based off of besides lecture notes. She had 6 quizzes (drops lowest 2) 2 papers and two essay midterms. Hard but love her attitude!
Great professor! Class was not easy, but doable. 4 quizzes, lowest 1 dropped. 3 short essays, lowest 1 dropped. Then a midterm and final. She just lectures off the top of her head but is very knowledgable of the subject and makes her lectures not boring. Be prepared to take notes because you will need them for the essays!
She is awesome and funny. I truly enjoyed learning the content because she made it so interesting. The essay exams were killer because you have to study around 8 topics, she will pick 2 on exam day, then you pick one to write on. Being a good writer is an asset in this class. If you are willing to work, I highly recommend her class. You learn A LOT
I hate history, but her lectures are really interesting. Not the typical history teacher who puts you to sleep. BUT her class is really hard. Heavy text book and note taking required. I read the reviews before going into her class and I should've listened to other's advice. DON'T TAKE HER CLASS, unless you like not having a social life
This class required a lot of work. MC and short essay quizzes on readings (lowest score dropped), 1 essay midterm, 1 essay final. Reading and taking notes are a MUST if you want to pass. She's an awesome teacher. Very funny. But very demanding. A lot of work for a lower division GE class. It's not hard, just tedious. I would still recommend her.
Professor Reed is my favorite history teacher by far. She's entertaining and funny, and interacts with the class. The tests and exams are challenging. However, she does give you questions and topics beforehand, and sometimes will pick the easiest questions. Would not recommend the workload for GE class, but if you do, its a great class to take!
Lectures are clear. Directions for quizzes are not clear. DO THE READINGS!!! Print out lecture terms; very helpful in lecture. Very HARSH grader. She can be VERY rude! Sometimes has an attitude that feels like "I am doing you a favor by teaching you, so you should be grateful". She is not very friendly about asking questions in class.
She was really helpful, but you need to make sure you do the work. If you study and read you will do fine, but if you don't then it will be hard to pass the class. Pay attention and go to her before exams .
I have never worked so hard to barely pass a class in my life. Overall, I get A's on papers and mid term writing assignments. This is the only class I have ever taken where my writing has received failing grades.
This class takes a lot of time and effort, and you will EARN your grade. Lectures are very knowledgeable and engaging. She expects a lot out of her students. Recommendations: write notes as you read, record and review lecture notes, and combine reading and lecture notes for mid term and final. Strong writing skills are a must have.
I generally get As or B+s, but I struggled to pass this class. She is not very specific as to what the quizzes will be, and she is a TOUGH GRADER. Whether I passed the class or not came down to the final, which I aced because I got lucky. I wound up with a 79.6% in the class and she wouldn't round up even though I didn' t miss a day.
Dr. Reed is very knowledgeable, however she expects you to retain info and write as if you were a history major. She is a TOUGH grader. Midterm Final essays, you have to know every detail thats been said in the class or read. I ended up with a 37 page study guide for the final. Im a straight A student. Left the class with a B- Hardest class ever
Fascinating class. Lots of reading and short essay quizzes and essay exams. Attendance isn't completely mandatory but if you miss a day, you miss a lot. She's very knowledgable and clear but she won't hesitate to put jerk students in their place. But the kid deserved it. I would love to take another class with her.
Not going to lie, very challenging class, but worth it. Do the readings and care about the class. If you are lazy the class is not for you. She truly cares about your success, if u ask for help she is there. And the lectures are so interesting! the most rewarding class I have ever taken. if you want an easy class this one is not for you
She is a great professor and I really enjoyed her lectures but it is an extremely hard class although it is not impossible, it just requires work. She is a tough grader but will explain what you need to improve on in her office hours. You will feel very accomplished at the end of the semester if you do well. Id take her again.
She adds some humor to Greek history and definitely had me research more outside of class. Lots of writing though and is extremely critical on papers, but its to make you a better writer. Midterm and final: researching 7 essay prompts with two being on the essay and you will write about one of them. If weak in writing, take an English class first.
If you are not good at writing and do not like to read, don't take this class. There are 2 essays assignments & the midterm and final are essays. Do good on her quizzes because they can bring your grade up and they are not that hard. She is a great professor, I loved her lectures, but the class is hard. Greek history was fascinating to learn about.
Don't be fooled by her very strict attitude on the first day like I was. She just knows what she wants to see in work and makes it very clear what she wants. She may be strict but very kind and there to help without making you feel stupid. Lectures are very interesting.
Oh my god this class is designed for you to take a grade hit. Do not..i repeat, do not take her. You are thinking "she must be tough but fair" no she is tough and unfair. It is not possible ( emphasize not possible) to get above 95 in this class and you will regret it.
I wouldn't recommend this teacher unless you're willing to put up with her tough grading or her class. If you're willing to put in the work, have lots of time, and have easy classes then you should. Other than that, avoid her at all times.
She is TOUGH, but you will learn a lot. If you are a poor writer, then don't take a class from her. She has high standards, but the writing skills I learned from her have also helped me in other classes. Her lectures are very interesting. Loved her and the class.
It is not impossible to get an A in her classes. Just don't be lazy; do the readings, study, and show up, it's that easy (but can be stressful). If you are struggling, make time to go to her office hours. Do all of this and you are guaranteed to pass the class. College is work, you have to earn your successes because nothing is ever handed to you.
She's a great professor. To be honest, I was scared on the first day of class because I thought she was a challenging teacher. Well, I thought I was going to fail, but later on, I did VERY well on 2 papers and 2 exams. Class is easy as long as you are reading and REALLY into Ancient Rome history. Just READ, and HIGHLIGHT/notes. Don't be lazy.
I am studying literature, I am an A student in all of my witting classes, I received two D's on the papers I wrote for this class. Not I'm possible to pass if your a history major. DO NOT TAKE if just using it for the history credit.
I would recommend not taking HIST100 with Reed. She is a very tough grader and would even bump due dates up on some assignments. She also will tell you about her PhD constantly. I get As on essays but i got Ds on most of this class. I did finish with a C but it was close. My advice if shes the only option is wait til next semester.
Professor Reed is a rather dry personality and not very intellectual. I took her History 100 class as a requirement and the coursework itself is not too difficult. But she frequently reminds the class that the chances of passing are slim. I did not get a passing grade.
Gives enough work for her 3 unit class to be a full time job. She announces that 60% of her students fail every class. Takes a long time to get back to you outside of class even though you have things due almost daily. Attendance is mandatory.
Dr. Reed has boring lectures and expects graduate-level writing in all of her essays. I barely passed, and Im an average A student. She grades very difficult and is also difficult when answering questions or emails.
Kids in college expect an easy-going, everyone-gets-an-A type of classes. Well, this professor is actually doing her job trying to improve student's skills. I got 89% percent and I do not consider myself a hard-working student. Seriously, she may scare away some kids in the beginning but for those who study (and love) History it should not be a prb
I really do not like this class personally. The teacher is extremely opinionated and refuses to tolerate criticism of said opinions. This class is supposedly a "discussion" course but I've found that she dominates the discussion rather than letting the students engage in discourse over the topic at hand.
Dr. Reed is awesome. If you're looking to become a better writer, take her class. If you want an easy A- take someone else. She values education over grades, so if you're in college "just to get your degree" and waste your time take someone else. If you value a true education take Dr. Reed. She is fantastic. Brilliant classicist, great teacher.
Professor Reed is great. She is a tough grader. You really have to work to get good grades on her papers but she is always willing to help. She's tough but fair and if you put in the effort you will actually learn a lot about the subject matter and about writing in general which will really help with other classes.
Good Lectures but it wont matter. she makes you buy her friends book for $100 for the essays and you will only use literally 1 page each essay. She will not post that one page and it is not available online. She grades her essays way too hard and will fail your essay if you use an outside source besides her friends book.
Do yourself a favor and find another professor to take this class with. She starts the class basically letting you know if you have any sort of life, outside of her class you will not pass. She expects her class to be your first and only priority. She can be very rude as well as judgmental so be careful when speaking with her or emailing her.
Do not take her class. She begins the semester off by informing the class that only around 30% of the class will make it past midterms. There is ALOT of homework, multiple assignments due each week. She also informs students that if they're taking a lot of classes or have a job, they'll prob fail her class.
Doctor Reed is an amazingly educated woman, never discredit that. But she is an awful teacher, she teaches next to nothing in her Hist 100 class. It is mostly pick a topic then you are on your own for 5 months. Assignments due multiple times a week, extremely tough grader, and never gives any constructive criticism. Stay clear, its for the best.
Professor is condescending, unapproachable, mixes classes in canvas, and doesnt give constructive feedback. Be careful with this professor, your gpa will suffer and you'll find yourself hating life.
HORRIBLE PROFESSOR! LITERALLY BRAGS THAT VERY FEW PASS THE CLASS. REALLY TOUGH GRADER! Its impossible to reach her high standards so expect your GPA to drop. Multiple assignments due a week. If you absolutely have to take her make sure your other classes are BS classes. I ignored the other ratings and I 100% REGRET IT! DONT MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE!
lectures are a waste of time and money because she doesn't teach most of the time she assigns in class self study. TOUGH GRADER! she has really high expectations and even tells the class that most people won't pass. don't even bother arguing about your grade with her she doesn't care. We are in a pandemic and even then won't cut us some slack!
As a Professor in the History department she is very knowledgeable. Even if you think you can survive after the first class, you may not (**has high expectations**). Homework wasn't to bad but, she is an extremely harsh grader. If you fail one assignment you may not pass the class, unless you work yourself to death. Even then its questionable.
Not only the worst Professor I've ever had, the most unpleasant person I've ever met as well. She waited until the day after the withdraw date to hand back our papers that she had since the first week of class. I realized I couldn't pass, when I brought her the petition to drop she ripped it up right in front of my face. AWFUL human. AWFUL teacher
