Absolutely amazing, funny professor, so glad I took the class with her. 6 small exams, relatively easy, all from lectures. Attend class, pay attention, and you will do well. There are plenty of opportunities for extra credit. She really makes this class interesting!
She is so amusing. She really knows her stuff, and cares about what shes teaching. She really wants you to understand everything and makes herself available for the students. 6 "mini exams" every 2 weeks or so, and an open response question at the end of each lecture. She made a hard subject really fun to learn.
She goes off on tangents all the time and constantly asks the TA's to clarify what she's teaching. She seems like she doesn't have full knowledge of the subject. Hasn't responded to any of my e-mails when I ask questions about tests or grades. Really confusing teacher because she goes off subject so frequently. I personally don't reccomend it.
Such a fun professor, really makes class interesting. The 6 mini-exams make studying much more manageable, and there are small open responses and lots of extra credit to boost your grade. It helps to have taken Bio 100 but she understands that some students don't have a science background. Highly recommend, her personality alone makes it worth it!
Very fun and scatterbrained. Would be a great aunt or drinking buddy, but very difficult to follow in a classroom setting. Great at clarifying when you see her one-on-one, but mini-exams are extremely difficult and circuitous. If you're interested in science, Great class. If not a science person, it's very hard. She could definitely make it easier!
Great teacher who cares makes time for every question asked in a large lecture hall. mini exams more manageable than big ones and are ALWAYS on lecture slides so they're easy to study for. interactive online forum for sharing vids and ideas. also her syllabus says she doesn't answer emails just read it and you'll do well. good professional humor.
One of the best classes I've taken. If you need to take this class because you're a Psych major don't worry. She gives 6 mini tests that are 25 multiple choice questions each. Going to class is mandatory since she gives an inclass writing assignment every class She's very good at presenting the material. Do not buy the book and study off the slides
my favorite class at umass. i definitely recommend taking a class with her! mini exams are easy as long as you study her lecture slides, which she posts online. textbook not mandatory. TAs suck and are not helpful at all, but other than that, i would definitely recommend this class and professor!
I didn't take bio ever and got an A. Her exams are small and easy to study for if you actually care. Don't buy the book. She has a great personality and made neuroscience interesting for me, which is something I never thought I would say. This woman knows her stuff, this might not be her concentration but who cares? She explained it well.
Really great professor! I hate science and she made me want to consider a neuroscience track!
She is new to the teaching world but I think she did a pretty good job this semester. She has a lot of knowledge on the subject of behavioral neuroscience. She is the advisor for the Neuroscience department after all. Her exams are fair for the most part and she gives an optional final that will replace two of the 6 lowest exam scores.
Although she is new, she is an AMAZING professor. This is the only class I actually looked forward to going to! She honestly made me consider a neuroscience track. I would recommend her and this class 100%!!!
Dr. AB makes a difficult topic very understandable, even if the material has a tendency to be a little dry. 6 "mini exams" every 2 to 3 weeks and in class writing assignments every class, so attendance is mandatory (and she doesnt allow cell phones) I was dreading this class at first but it turned out to be very interesting and enjoyable
Awesome teacher! I highly recommend this class! I actually looked forward to going!
Lori was hilarious. I looked forward to going to every class and she made an extremely difficult topic understandable and even fun!
She would go on random tangents and constantly asking the class unrelated questions; this would force her to rush through the hardest material at the end of each lecture..she improved on this towards the end of the course though. Good prof otherwise. Interesting material & tons of EC which really really boosts your grade. Take this class.
i'm a second semeseter senior, so it's really hard to care about my classes. i started off doing just that and sitting in the back, but honestly, she's interesting and makes neuroscience easy to understand! also, if you get there a few minutes early, she'll bump good music, which gives her points in my book. all in all, she rocks. take this class
Really interesting class! Attendance is mandatory every class because of writing assignments, and lots of extra credit! Exams are a bit hard, and there's 6 of them. If you can put in work, you'll be fine
This class is really difficult. I enjoy the professor because she's really into it and up-beat, but the material is complicated as ever. The tests are difficult, so definitely study. She allows you to record lectures (I RECOMMEND YOU DO THIS!!). There is one extra credit paper, and a writing assignment each class.
Dr. Astheimer tries to get through 50-75 slides in one lecture. She talks so fast that the material makes no sense. Her tests are ridiculously hard and you have to attend every class because of the writing assignments. She doesn't use the book at all, so do not bother buying it. The TA's are useless and the reviews just make you more confused.
Flies through too many slides in a single class session. Material is difficult, exams, are tricky, and reviews are useless. Mandatory attendence because there is a writing assignment at the end of every class and even if you go, you won't get the full 3 points for the assignment. Tough class.
You can expect any hard science course to be a little challenging, but this Professor definitely makes it interesting and somewhat easy to understand. Attendance is mandatory, & you have to really pay attention in the lectures to do well. Also, I bought the book to clear up points of confusion. Very helpful when you don't fully understand something
Coming from a strong science background, I didnt find this all that difficult. She teaches this class at a level that is simple for anyone to understand and enjoy. She has six small exams and an optional final with two ways to gain extra credit. Easy to get a high grade. Highly recommended!
I had her for behavioral neuroscience which is challenging if you don't have any background in life sciences. It heavily relies on biology and chemistry. Mostly psych majors take this class, so no offense, but they often struggle. She's a great professor and very clear and approachable. Her tests are simple as long as you understand the material.
Attendance is mandatory every class because of writing assignments. Opportunity for extra credit (definitely should take advantage of, you'll probably need it). Exams are hard, but simply because of the crappy word choice she uses and there's 6 of them. If you study, you should be fine but to get the A is a challenge. No book needed. Optional final
She goes through the material really fast, so you have to attend and pay attention in lecture to do well. An exam every other week, but if you can stay on top of the work you should be able to do well. A bit science-y but very interesting. Would recommend.
Lori is a fantastic teacher. I'm a psych minor and I have trouble with science but she clarifies everything and makes it understandable. You have to go to class and study to do well. Don't bother buying the textbook, she only tests on her lectures.
Good teacher and a very interesting class, but material moves very quickly and in force. Six MC "mini exams", do the readings and/or take good notes (also online). One quirk, a question on an exam about MDMA's "harm" was bias. She used a study where monkeys had 40mg/kg of MDMA in their system for 2 days, which would be 2.72g in a 150lb human.
This class is interesting, but her exams are hard. If you are looking for an easy A, don't take this class. A lot of studying for the 6 mini exams, which are tricky. Class average right now is a C- and she still won't scale at all. Also, make sure you have the book for a reference.
She's clear with material, but fast. And it's all incredibly dense. I didn't buy the textbook, and didn't need to. Everything is in lecture notes. But if you stop her, she'll make sure you understand. I didn't do so hot earlier on in the semester, but she offers SO MUCH EXTRA CREDIT.
If you are a psych major and need to take Psych 330 for your major eventually, take this class! I had already taken Psych 330 before I took this so it was really easy, but I wish it was offered before I took 330 because it would have helped ALOT. Five 10 minute in class quizzes, weekly 2 minute online "quizzes", Easy extra credit & take home final.
I'm a business major with no science background at all and I just got an A in this class. Buy the book, go to EVERY class, take notes on a laptop (to keep up with her fast paced lectures,) study hard for each exam, and do the extra credit discussion section. I also took this class at the same time as Developmental and there was some nice overlap
Dr. A is awesome! Sometimes test questions are confusing, but she's willing to give half credit. She's very passionate. Attendance mandatory, 6 mini-exams, optional final, extra credit. If you're struggling, go to the discussion sections and test reviews. Reading the book definitely helps. Lori makes this topic as easy as it can be.
Easiest Class of my college career. Then again...I major in a science related field, which I will not disclose in order to prevent bias opinions. Just read the book for this class. The lectures are tedious, if you are smart.
This was a super easy class if you attend lectures. She explains everything clearly and puts that information on the exams. She gives plenty of opportunities for extra credit. You don't need to buy the book if you go to class. Easy A.
Dr. Astheimer tries to makes the material interesting even when most psych majors hate this topic. She flies through the notes but willing to answer questions. Attendance is taken through daily writing assignments. Mini Exams about every two weeks are moderately hard but there's plenty of opportunities to get a good grade.
Professor Best was absolutely amazing. I love Neurosicence already and she just made me want to learn even more. She is extremely clear and concise. She lets you know what exactly is going to be on the exam. Study her slides and you will be golden for the exam. 6 easy mini exams! little 3 point index card question at end of class. A must take!!!!
pI just started Behavioral Neuroscience and I can already say this woman is amazing. She makes difficult material manageable and interesting. Just the way she talks about it inspires interest in the class. Plus she's pretty funny! Love her! Great class so far, she seems really understanding!
LOVE HER! 6 "mini exams" instead of one or two really big ones makes it easy to save your grade and retain material. Her sense of humor is great and she's very interested in student success. Offers extra credit, only complaint is that the material can be tough but she honestly makes it so easy to succeed if you put in the effort.
While the material in Behavioral Neuro is pretty tough, Astheimer does a great job clarifying the information and you can tell she loves what she teaches. 6 mini-exams and an optional "for extra credit" discussion that I found super helpful. Exams are just 25 multiple choice each and there's an optional final that can replace your two lowest exams
Prof. Astheimer makes class interesting because she is actually interested in her subject. The material can be hard at times, but she will clarify any questions and is good about taking time to make sure that everyone understands. Also she has a good sense of humor.
There's a lot of material in her slides, but focus on the study guide that she hands out and you should do fine on the mini-exams. The mini-exams are tough but a lot of extra credit is offered.
Lori's test were almost impossible... she would jumble up everything you learn in lecture and throw it on the test in a completely different context. I would study for 3 days straight for these tests and still get high D's on them. Tests are really unfair. She does give extra credit though, which is the only reason I got a B.
If you're not good at science, you'll have to work hard to do well in this class. At the same time, it is possible to succeed if you go to class and study for the tests. Lori is funny and wants her students to do well and to be engaged. She's understanding, but not by any means a pushover.
Lori is a great teacher because she really cares about her students. Sitting in her lectures you can tell she wants every person in the room to understand what she is trying to teach. Yeah, behavioral neuroscience is a confusing subject for some people, but she makes it as simple as she can. I am so glad I took this class; I wish she had more!
Lori is such a nice person! Lectures were super long and condensed with a ton of info. As long as you study her slides, and her pre-test wkshts you should be fine. If you can do high school bio you should do fine. Psych majors strug hard though. 6 exams, that sometimes test random stuff, and in class writing asmt, lots of EC. No need for book IMO.
Dr. A is one of my favorite professors I've had so far at UMass. If you don't go to class, expect your grade to reflect that. Paying attention to lecture slides is critical, but she is extremely generous with extra credit. Don't bother buying the book, as it was an expensive waste.
Lori is an incredible teacher. Definitely recommended. Don't buy the book.
Lori is one of the best professors I have ever had. She's clear and concise with all of the information presented. Lori's also funny and loves what she studies which makes the class way more engaging. Going to class is a must bc of in-class writing assignments and exams can be tricky, but there's an optional final (replaces lowest 2 mini-exams).
Lori is one of my favorite professors at umass. she cares about her students and is a great lecturer. She moves a little quickly but her study guides are really helpful. She says you need the textbook and for someone who has a hard time with the material it may help, but her exams come straight from her lectures that she posts online.
Dr. Best is probably one of the best professors I've had. The material can be confusing but she does an AMAZING job of explaining everything. Textbook really isn't mandatory. Grading is based off 6 multiple choice exams and handing in a short response every lecture, so no homework. If you need to take Psych 330, I highly recommend Dr. Astheimer.
I absolutely love her!!! She is really interested in the subject matter, and she tries to make it funny and engaging for everyone, even if you're not super into science. The course itself is certainly rigorous but as long as you pay good attention in class and study the review worksheets, tests will be absolutely fine.
This class is really a pretty easy A. She is really clear and does not try to overcomplicate anything like some professors might. If you attend lecture you will get at the very least a B+. She also gives enough extra credit that you will do really well. 6 mini exams that are fairly easy because they are shorter. The final is optional.
Neuroplasticity Seminar is a wonderful seminar and Lori does a great job engaging students in a cool area of study by making this class similar to a journal club. One main project + moodle participation and a final paper. Not too much work. Lori really gets to know the students and makes it an enjoyable class.
Dr. Best is great. She tries to make lectures fun and exciting and she does. She is clear about what you need to know and she provides everything in the lecture slides. Really easy to get an A if you put in the time to study the lecture slides. She also gives you many chances to get extra credit so take advantage of that!
The material is pretty straightforward as long as you go to class and take notes. She makes it interesting and easy to remember with acronyms and memory tricks. Her mini exams were sooo much better than having evening exams, and writing assignments weren't bad at all. Book completely not necessary. Go to discussion!!! Every week.
She's the best! Dr Astheimer is incredibly passionate about neuroscience and wants you to be too. Attendance is taken so you do need to go to class, but it is extremely helpful to go and take notes. There are 6 tests throughout the semester and optional final, plus lots of extra credit if you want it. Definitely take this class with her if you can!
Lori Best is the best Lori at umass. Seriously, her teaching style keeps your attention even though the material can be quite difficult. Its worth it for how awesome she is.
LOVE LOVE LOVE Lori. Honestly if you have the chance to take a class with Lori do it! It's challenging but shes the best professor at UMass hands down. You have to study and go to class but it's not hard to do because everything is clear and interesting! I want to take more classes with her!
It was not easy to get an A. But her office hour was very helpful. She truly helps out her students a lot. Go to the lecture and take a notes.
She is a goddess. You'll have to put in a fair amount of effort, but all in all the course isn't very stressful. The exams are not only fair but also kind of fun, and she really wants everyone to succeed.
Lori is easily one of the best professors at UMass. It's so evident that she cares for all of her students and their success. This class has optional discussions, but they're helpful and make up a TON of extra credit. Definitely go to lectures, but with no homework you just have to study the lecture slides, discussion worksheets and you'll do great!
Lori is one of the best and most reasonable psychology professors at UMass. Her lectures move pretty fast and there are writing assignments that measure your attendance and comprehension but they're usually answered by the material she covers. She's hilarious and loves showing you dog pictures but make sure you study for the exams; notes are a MUST
Lori is one of the best professors I've ever had. Grading criteria is simple, and there is no homework. There are six mini exams, note-card quizzes that serve as attendance and plenty of extra credit opportunities. As long as you attend lecture and optional discussions (which count for extra credit and prepare you for exams) you can get an A!
Best person to have. 6 exams might be a lot, but they are only 25 multiple choice questions.
A lot of extra credit opportunities. Lori is very nice and always answers questions. She makes corny jokes in class and it's pretty funny! Definitely a good professor.
Lori is one of the best professors I have ever had. She makes the material super fun and easy to memorize. Go to the optional discussion for tons of extra credit. Highly recommend taking this class to someone who isn't a psych major, but is interested in the subject. Great intro to the field.
Lori is hands down best professor I have ever had. she's so young and funny and really makes class interesting and entertaining. optional discussion that gives you 10 extra credit points if you go. tests are kind of difficult if you don't study. her clicker questions basically tell you what is on the exam. love her so much
Lori is the best professor I have ever had! She is funny, intelligent, and makes every lecture super interesting. The grading criteria is clear, and there are many opportunities for extra credit. 5 exams, 5 newsroom assignments that take 30 mins a piece, and iClicker. Up to 16 points of EC between optional discussion and SONA.
This class is fantastic- it is properly difficult without being impossible and you will learn so much if you go to class and put the effort into it. Professor Astheimer is passionate lecturer, provides clear explanations, and puts in a ton of effort to ensure your success. This class is a must if you are interested in psychology!
Lori is an AMAZING professor. Neuroscience can be hard, especially if you haven't taken any extensive bio classes, but Lori makes it manageable. The units are blocked in helpful ways, her iclicker questions prepare you well for exams, and she explains things in the best way possible.
Dr. A really cares for her students and is one of the best professors I've ever had! Take this class if you ever get the chance, she makes it really interesting and she is extremely knowledgeable and offers a lot of extra credit opportunities! (Plus she puts in puppy videos when she changes topics)
Lori is a great teacher and is so nice. There is not a lot of work for this class but she does not prepare you for exams that well in my opinion.
This was a really great course and that was completely due to Lori. Her lectures were really clear and comprehensive. She explained concepts multiple different ways and gave you fun ways to remember kind of confusing material. There were 5 exams, but they were each only 25 questions and completely based on lecture so a quick review is all you need!
Dr. A has been my favorite professor thus far. She is super funny and going to lecture is actually enjoyable. The class consists of 5 newsroom articles, 5 mini exams and an optional final. There's tons of extra credit and if you show up to every class and pay attention you should have no problem getting an A especially if you've take bio or psych.
Graded on 6 mini exams with an optional final that replaces your two lowest exam grades if you do better on the final. Iclicker points in class, and she posts the lectures on Echo360 if you miss one (I think you can miss 2 no penalty) Option discussions for extra credit. Overall she clearly knows what shes talking about.
I loved this class. As long as you read over the slides and actually study for the exams, you will get an A. She says you need the textbook but you definitely don't. 100% of her exam questions come from her lecture slides, which she posts on Moodle. She also gives extra credit. One of my favorite classes at UMass.
Very engaging and amusing and tries to keep you from getting bored. Moves through material at a good pace to make class fly by half the time. A lot of your grade is tests (multiple choice) but there are several and she posts the slides. Clicker attendance is part of your grade as well as some relatively minor homework every-other week.
One of the best classes I've taken at UMass. Super clear and easy to understand. Makes the material really interesting. Makes you laugh with her funny analogies and ways to remember things. Overall just an awesome class that isn't really that difficult if you pay attention and study for the exams. I would take every class she teaches, she is so rad
Lori is one of the best professors I've had at UMass. Attendance for the class is mandatory and taken through iClicker questions, but lectures are very interesting anyway. There are 5 mini-exams, an optional final, and 5 Newsroom posts through moodle. I'd highly recommend.
She is legit one of the best (pun intended) professors that I have had. All of the lectures were great. I didn't read the textbook, but through the lectures I did well. You would have to pay attention, but she will explain everything well and gives great ways to remember the material. I would definitely recommend her as a professor for any class.
Lori is amazing! She is super knowledgable and while the information is not the easiest, Lori explains it really well and gives the class good ways to remember info.
The best professor I've had at UMass so far! She explains things so well and gives amazing lectures. There are 5 mini exams, an optional final, and some moodle assignments. There are so many ways to earn extra credit, and the exams are super easy. Honestly, I think it would be hard not to get an A.
Lori is absolutely amazing. Best professor I've had at UMass, and also a great advisor. Puts a lot of care into her lectures, and can answer any question she's asked. I wouldn't take Psych 330 with anyone else. Pay attention in class, and you'll be fine. 5 easy mini-exams and lots of extra credit. It's pretty hard not to do well.
Lori is a great teacher who is really invested in what she teaches. There isnt really a lot of homework which is good. I clicker definitely plays a big part in your grade but you get a certain amount of free absences. The exams can be tough but she the final is optional and can replace your two lowest exam grades.
Lori is an amazing professor and the material she teaches is very interesting and relevant. The class is pretty easy as long as you study the material a couple of days leading up to the exams (there are 5 in total) and the final is optional. There is a lot of memorization in this class but flashcards help a lot.
Attendance iClicker: 30 points, 5 Moodle assignments (really easy): 25 points total, 5 MINI-Exams (they are really specific, but if you make quizlets and study for them they are an easy A): 150 pts total. Optional final exam replaces 2 Mini exam grades. Extra credit: SONA + Surveys Go to all classes, and study effectively-- EASY A
Dr. A was an overall good teacher. If you try to skip her lectures you are F#cked. Even with echo 360 to catch up after her lectures are HEAVY.
Lori is amazing. The course is very dense & a lot of information. Not work heavy at all but 5 mini exams that you really need to study hard for. She wants you to do well & gives you the chance to replace your two lowest exams with the final which is huge. Shes a great professor. Attendance is key, allowing 5 absences. Assignments are an easy 100.
In the past I have struggled with neuroscience but Professor Astheimer made it easier for me to understand. As long as you try to follow along and review discussion notes, you should be ok.
Please take this class! Professor A is by far the greatest teacher on campus. She explains everything so clearly and is absolutely hilarious. 5 "mini exams" are the bulk of your grade with an optional final to replace the 2 lowest grades. Lots of extra credit available as well. Just pay attention in lecture and you'll do great.
She's just a good teacher
The most amazing professor. I wish she taught every class. The lectures are very dense, but she breaks it up into 5 mini exams so each exam doesn't have too much on it. The clickers in class help prepare for exams so much by testing how well you can apply the knowledge, not just knowing information. You learn a lot. I except an A in this class.
Amazing professor. Extremely fair. You must actually study before the exams to do well, but if you put in the effort you can get an A. Helpful weekly discussions and extra credit options.
I wouldn't consider myself an exemplary student, so this class was pretty difficult. Prof Best makes the class as easy as possible, but your grade entirely depends on your personal effort. If you don't show up to class, you will fail. If you don't study hard before each exam, you will fail. If you do those two things you will be completely fine.
Wrapping up my semester with Prof A. Best and she was absolutely wonderful. Neuroscience is definitely a difficult subject but she explains everything really clearly and effectively despite the remote learning format. She really, genuinely cares about her students and wants us to succeed.
Dr. A is an incredible professor. I have struggled with every science class I have taken since high school so I was really intimidated by taking behavioral neuroscience but I ended up understanding the material, ending with an A, and actually enjoying myself! She explains things in a way that makes complicated material seem really easy. 10/10 prof
This class was really easy. You can easily just learn from the slides she uploads to Moodle. Once a week, you just need to do a small quiz or assignment on Moodle, and there's an open-notes final. It's a P/F class that I mostly took for an extra credit and to get ready for Psych 330. She also teaches 330, so it's a good way to get to know her
I loved Dr. A. I was really nervous for neuroscience, but she made the information accessible and easy to understand. Her lectures were engaging and she makes sure that her students are following the material. She really cares for her students and is genuinely a very good person.
Professor Astheimer has been my favorite psych professor so far! Her lectures are engaging and clear, she's understanding and sympathetic to student needs. Assignments and grading are straightforward, and she's very passionate about student understanding. I was scared to take neuro, but I learned a lot and felt pretty confident during the class.
Lori is the best. Great professor, clear explanations, and offers extra credit. The mini exams are doable, as long as you study, you can get an A
Professor AB is a great professor! She explains everything super well and the exams are open notes. She has weekly quizzes but they're all questions from lectures so if you just take a picture you'll get an easy 100 on them. There are 5 exams and a final which covers 2 exam scores if it's a higher grade, this helps if you mess up an exam.
She was the best! There is a lot of material but it is broken down into 5 sections (with a mini-exam at the end of each)so it's manageable. Def attend/watch every lecture and take good notes! 5 easy hw assignments. Weekly quizzes but she gives you the answers in class! No textbook/extra reading needed. I'd recommend taking this before 315
Very straightforward class, and Dr A is a very caring professor. Super recommended. I just found the concepts of Neuroscience being taught a little tricky since I have never taken CHEM or BIO. If you pay attention you will do great.
Dr. A is wonderful professor! Neuroscience is content heavy but the course is divided into 5 mini-exam making it easier to follow. All the answers to the weekly quizzes are in the lectures. Shes easily accessible outside of class! Watch all the lectures, take notes, and youll do great!
I cant say enough good things. Her lectures are extremely interesting and even as a person with ADHD I find myself paying attention the entire class. Shes very fair with assigning work its very manageable. Shes also very understanding and generously changed all the exams to online when covid numbers on campus started rising. 10/10.
I absolutely loved her lectures. She makes a lot of difficult content easy to digest. Highly recommend taking a class with her.
Psych 191B was only 1 credit so it was already an easy class but Lori taught it beautifully. She uses PowerPoints which she also posts on Moodle and included handout versions that you could easily print and write on. She was really sweet, tried her best everyday + she cares about you passing as a student. Will never give you a hard time, 10/10
Wish I could have her for every Psych class I take. Easy to do well if you pay attention and make use of the many resources. Shes an understanding person too so dont be afraid to reach out.
Lectures were very organized, so easy to follow, and always stops to answer questions and provide clarity. Assignments are very straightforward and not hard. There are 5 mini exams, which are low stress and make it so if you don't do well on one you can still get a good grade. She is funny and makes it enjoyable to attend class.
Lori is amazing ! She is extremely organised and so kind to talk to. Her material is so amazingly interesting. Attend her lectures, take good notes - class is divided into 5 mini exams that are pretty straightforward if you took good notes and studied well. She is absolutely wonderful. Take it
Cannot say enough good things about Professor Astheimer. She is amazing! Introduction to neuro content is biology heavy, but her lectures make it manageable. Her lectures are engaging, and her expectations are reasonable. You have a weekly quiz that is solely based on iClicker questions in class. Exams are straightforward and totally doable.
Dr. A is a fantastic teacher. This class was super easy with very straightforward expectations, so it was easy to stay on top of things. 10/10 recommend.
Dr.A is an excellent instructor and actually cares about her students doing well, and learning. There are barely any homeoworks, and 5 mini-exams, so each one doesn't jeapordize your grade too much if you do poorly. Definetly reccomend this class, especially as a tech elective for BME.
Lori is by far the best professor I have ever had. She is so smart and super helpful, I have nothing but respect for her. She will always make time for her students and she loves to answer questions about the content. She makes the neuro major a lot less scary and her lectures are straightforward and easy to understand. Take her class if you can.
The material can be tough but Dr. A structures class so you have what you need to do well. In person study groups go over material and test prep (ech attendance worth .5 extra credit points) Lectures are key for course. All lectures recorded & Zoomed w/ iClicker app access (that's been a life saver when sick). Lectures key for tests.
I love Lori!! This class was pretty easy. She allows you to miss around 12 lectures which is really nice. She does IClicker, but she drops the amount of lectures you are allowed to miss. Not a lot of outside work too. She does around 5 mini assignments. All the exams are online as well, even the final. There is no required textbook as well.
Best professor I've had at UMass. Engages students in the course material, ensures it is easy to understand. Wants you to succeed. HW assignments (10 total) are simple. Discussion sections optional. Opportunities for extra credit.
I LOVE Lori. She was by far my best professor at umass this far and you could tell she really cared about all the students even though this was a big class. Some of the material is hard but she makes it super engaging. If you can take a class with her, DO IT! So happy to know there are still professors like this.
I am by no means a biology person, but she made me enjoy this class much more than I would've expected. She's great at explaining, her teaching and slides are engaging. You can miss up to 12 classes without penalty & plenty extra credit. Some exams were tough, but not the worst, homework assignments help engage material with the real world.
Really good teacher and very interesting class. Attendance is not mandatory, but she does use iclicker to take participation points but she drops a lot of the missed grades. You can also join iclicker from home and watch the lecture on zoom which is really helpful.
She's so passionate about the subject that it makes you want to learn. She does iclickers every class, but I always wanted to attend her lectures so I never found it tough to go. Hands down one of my favorite professors. All psych majors should try to take a class with her at some point!
Dr. Astheimer is one of the best psych professors I've had so far. I also took her PSYCH191B before 330 and she was equally great. If you are able to take a class with her as a professor do it!
I love Dr. A!! She is so engaging and makes lecture pretty interesting. 5 "mini-exams" and they were all online/open note + 5 "newsroom" assignments (usually 1-2 pages, easy). Even though the material can be super sciencey I thought it was very interesting. No need to read the textbook.
Even though the class material is extremely hard for me and I don't understand it, I still enjoyed this class. She is a really accessible and caring professor. I can tell how passionate she is about the things she teaches. Classes are very engaging. She is also extremely accommodating to any extenuating circumstances. One of the best professors.
Professor A is the best! Has 5 mini exams that are all open note and online. Optional final that can replace two of these mini exam scores. IClicker attendence but also offers class over zoom. Can miss 10 classes without penalty. 5 Neuro Newsroom assignments which you pick an article and answer a few questions about. Various extra credit given.
Dr. Astheimer is a phenomenal teacher. She makes lectures super engaging and interesting and always has funny analogies/ways to help you remember information. She shows clear passion for what she is teaching and brings energy to class each day. This is my favorite course I've taken at UMass so far. 5 "mini-exams" and 5 discussion-esque assignments
Lori is the best! I haven't taken a bio related class since high school but she made it fun and accessible. All you really need is to come to lecture, either in person or online, and you're set for the course.
Dr. Astheimer was the best professor! I really enjoyed her teaching style and the way that she got me interested in Neuroscience. Her lectures were very informative and she made it easy to do well in the course. There were 5 mini exams, an optional final, and so many extra credit opportunities. 10/10 rating for Dr. Astheimer!!
This class was by far my favorite. Dr. A's course was very interesting and she managed to make every difficult topics easy to digest. Her assignments aren't too hard and there's plenty of feedback available if you need it
Very engaging class and professor. She was always well-prepared to answer all questions and cover all subjects thoroughly. She also inspired great interest in the class because her lectures were fantastic. Grading policy is clear and fair, as long as you attend lecture you'll do well and probably even enjoy yourself.
She was just amazing I loved having her as a teacher!
One of the best prof I've had and know. She makes lectures very interesting and has great jokes and puppy breaks. Mini exams are online. Attendance is mandatory but you can miss up to 11 classes. Neuro discussions are extra credit.
LOVED this class. The extra credit discussion was great for studying help and test prep. AND its extra credit so go! All the exams are online and you have writing assignments with questions to answer. Shes super passionate about her class and it really shows. She has a zoom option which is great when your sick and iclicker bonus points as well.
I absolutely ADORE Lori. I'm not a science person in the least but she sparked my interest in neuroscience. Lectures have a zoom option and she has made all textbooks free for students thru the library. Tracks attendance through iClickers but you would want to go to class bc of how good she is. Super helpful in office hours. 11/10.
Prof. AB's flexibility allowed for an open learning environment that worked for everyone. You could participate as much or as little as you wanted in discussions, she provided in person or zoom options for class, and dropped lowest grades.
One of the nicest professors I've ever had; her exams were online open-note, she really just wanted you to learn the content and not worry about your grade on exams. She offered extra credit for going to TA discussions and dropped your lowest exam. Also super accommodating and provided live Zoom lectures to still get attendance credit if you're ill
Lori is an absolutely PHENOMENAL professor, possibly the best I have had at UMass. She is knowledgable and cares about the content that she is teaching and her students. Lori is very accessible outside of class and is always willing to answer questions. All exams were online and open note and the final was optional, making it a very easy A.
Great prof. Took intro neuroscience which was hard. But her lectures were recorded, and all tests were online. IClicker points can be done on the app outside of class but I did 50% of them and still got a B. I wish I had attended class more because I would have had a better understanding of the material. She has accessible class material so 10/10.
Please take a class with Lori if you can! Really engaging lectures and makes complicated topics easy to understand. Online & open note exams, 5 very short writing assignments (like 4 questions about an article you choose), extra credit discussions, and iClicker based on completion not correctness. She really cares about the students and it shows.
My most favorite professor I have ever had
One of the best profs I've had - super engaging lectures, makes learning fun with puppy breaks and great analogies. Exams are online open-note, and unstuckstudy was a big help for study prep.
One of the best profs I've ever had. I believed that I hated neuro until I took her course. Funny and engaging lectures, clearly is passionate and cares about students. Mandatory attendance but you get 10 opportunities to miss. Optional (extra credit) discussions. 5 online open note mini exams. 5 simple hw assignments. TAKE THIS COURSE!!
She was so great and super inspiring! Homework, quizzes, and exams are all offered online and during office hours so you can Zoom in with any questions. The SI sessions were super helpful and fun too.
Best professor I've had.
Great prof. Has SONA and discussions for extra credit. She is funny and great at explaining. Available slides, readings, open note exams. I like going to class and even has a zoom to join from home is needed. Clicker questions but not graded intensely --> 1/2 credit = full credit for them. She is intelligent and informative, kind, and enjoyable.
The best professor I have had at umass. She talks fast but she is so energetic and funny and you can tell she loves the subject, which makes her lectures enjoyable. There are five assignments, five open-note multiple choice mini-exams, and the final is optional. The textbook and top hat are free and she gives so much extra credit.
Lori is one of the best professors I've had at Umass. She makes class so enjoyable and interesting. There are 5 mini exams, unfortunately I think this semester is the last time they will be take home, but take good notes and you will be fine. There are 5 other small assignments. There is really no way you could fail the class.
One of the best professors I've had! She's so enthusiastic about the material and makes it so exciting to learn. She's very understanding and helpful outside of class too!
I took Psych 330 with Dr. Astheimer Best. I'd say that she's the best professor I've had at this school. She does such a good job of making the content digestible and interesting. perfectly compliments the course content, and the amount of extra credit provided is insane. We have no exams, only mini-exams that are open note and online.
Just an amazing professor overall! Lori makes the content super understandable and really cares about your understanding. She is guaranteed to make you laugh atleast a few times during the semester, and good notes are key to doing well on the mini exams, (they are open note :)
Dr. A is one of the best professors I've had. She is very passionate, funny, and makes going to lectures worth it (even in lousy weather!). Go to lectures, takes notes, and you will pass no problem. She teaches such complex material in way that any student can understand. Tests are easy and fair, and everything you need are on the slides!
She is amazing. Dr. A offers a zoom link to watch class live while not attending in person. Quizzes are take home and multiple choice. She is very passionate about neuroscience. The class is very big but she does encourage participation and talking with people near you. She is amazing, even if science is not your thing you can do great.
Truly the best professor I've ever been blessed to have. PLEASE attend the most lectures you can because they are the most comprehensive and engaging hours of my college experience so far. She has so much extra credit that it is hard to not get an A in this class. Attendance is through TopHat and you can join from zoom if needed, but go in person!!
Honestly just a really great professor. Very clear and informative lectures. Its clear she cares about her students doing well. It is a very content heavy class with very difficult concepts. Also exam heavy, 5 midterms, optional final. Although this class was hard Dr. A had lots of extra credit, and lots of help opportunities.
Dr. A explains the material clearly and makes sure to clarify anything people ask about. She encourages questions and answers in easy to understand ways. Assignments: weekly 15 min or less surveys and one final project.
