Very friendly & helpful. Our leadership class based a lot of our lessons off of the Movie "Invictus," which was initially pretty cool but got kind of old by the end of the year.
tests are really easy if you do the study guide, which doesn't take long. two presentations with the same group of 5 for both. a few other assignments every once in a while. overall i enjoyed this class. she is very clear and helpful, one of my favorite professors at JMU.
Lori Britt is awesome!! She doesn't have many ratings cause she's new to JMU, but she's a really great teacher! Her tests are straight from the power points she teaches off of in class and they're pretty easy! The two presentations can be time consuming, but she's a fair grader. Overall she's a great professor, and an easy A for a Gen Ed Class!
Lori is a gem :) Take this class if you want a teacher who is hilarious, wants you get something out of the class, and will make an effort to help you succeed. Just go to class, take notes, don't slack off, READ THE TEXT BOOK and do studyguides. You'll be golden, I got a B+ which was not hard to get at all, couldve done better with more effort.
Professor Britt is an absolutely fabulous teacher. She's really funny and open about her life and is great at relating the material to real life situations, particularly her children and husband. Two big presentations, but as long as you're prepared you'll be fine because she's a very sensible grader. I hope to take more classes of hers!
Lori was by far one of my favorite professors at JMU. She is extremely approachable and helpful. She made the class very comfortable and open to discussion. She definitely took the stress off of speeches. I hated doing them before this class, but now I don't mind them at all! TAKE HER!
I LOVE Lori. She is one of the sweetest ladies :) She's really helpful, genuinely cares about her students, and she's pretty funny if you get to know her. She's always smiling in the hallways of Harrison- she brightens my day every time I see her. Take anything you can with her- you definitely won't regret it!
SERIOUSLY AMAZING! If you are signed up for anyone else, switch to Professor Britt ASAP. She is such a great teacher, she's energetic, happy, clear, helpful. She is an ideal teacher. And a super easy A, prepares you for the final more so than a lot of the other teachers from what i hear. PERFECT
Dr. Britt is great! I had her at 8 am and I enjoyed waking up to go to her class. She always had interesting stories to go along with her lessons and she definitely prepared us well for the final! Take her if you can!! : )
Professor Britt is fantastic!! The course is not a walk in the park - but she challenges you enough so that you will do well on the final!
LOVE THIS CLASS AND LORI!!! She is awesome. I never read the chapters and manage to do well on the exams, which aren't difficult if you follow the study guides she makes. You can tell she wants her students to succeed! TAKE HER
Dr. Britt is amazing! The class wasn't super easy, but with a little bit of work it's not hard to get an A. She uses really funny examples and really cares about keeping her students interested in lectures. I just did study guides she provided before the tests and got As.
Dr. Britt is amazing. She is very clear and interesting. The class is also interesting but don't think that you will get a good grade by just going to class. You need to study for the tests and participate in the discussion class. It is a great class though.
Dr. Britt is by far the most amazing professor of my first semester here at JMU. She brings the world into the classes with current news relating to the text. If you can, take her!
Dr. Britt is awesome! She is always in a good mood, and she's very enthusiastic about what she teaches. I'm not interested in communications at all, but I enjoy her lectures. There's 2 speeches, 3 exams and a final. Pretty easy as long as you study and understand the material! TAKE HER!
Dr. Britt is extremely helpful and makes all information clear while keeping the class interesting and fun. She really wants you to succeed.
Dr. Britt is AWESOME! I highly recommend her. She is always in a good mood and makes the information interesting. I never read the book but you should use ti to fill out the study guides. For the most part she covers the test material on the study guides but if you go to class, take notes, and look at the bolded words in the chapter you'll get an A
Prof Britt is a great teacher! I wish I could have gotten to know her, because she seems like such a sweet woman. Beware, gcom is harder than one might think. It is a class everyone has to take and Lori makes it very interesting.
Britt is soo nice. Her power point slides have all the information that you need on them. The test questions are a little weird at first, but mostly common sense.
Best professor ever. And hot!
Totally a great teacher. Obvious from the first class. Need to take this class. Yes, she's hot, too!
Dr. Britt is amazing! She's so nice and very willing to work with you if you ask. She grades the speeches pretty rigorously, but everything else is an easy A. She keeps lectures interesting and is an engaging professor.
Really great professor. The tests were difficult but mostly because nobody ever did the reading. Dr. Britt kept the class interesting and gave out a ton of free points. You have to take the class so might as well get a good professor for it.
Britt is pretty cool! The class itself is super boring but she does her best to make it interesting. She is a tougher grader especially when it comes to group presentations but she offers enough small, easy assignments to boost your grade. She goes over material in class really clearly! be sure to do the study guide and vocal and you'll be fine!
Britt is absolutely wonderful! She tries to make the class as interesting as possible and comes up with cool assignments. We also had a lot of say in what some of our bigger assignments would be about. She readily helps you out and gives great advice. A very relatable professor and highly intellectual.
Lori is extremely friendly and always smiling. She is super passionate about teaching and is always willing to help. The class is not difficult, you definitely have to put in some out of class work to prepare for speeches but it's not bad at all. TAKE LORI SHES THE BEST. She made this class so fun and painless! wish i was a communications major
Dr. Britt is an amazing professor and public speaker. She engages with her class so well and I'd honestly love the class if she didn't make it harder than it needed to be. It was a gen ed honors class, but it felt like way more. Sure, there wasn't too much homework, but she expected too much from our group speeches. I tried so hard but still no A.
Lori's class is good, she's full of energy & and happy to be there. The downside is that the class is pretty dry. We also had to pay $25 for an app that isn't very great & definitely not worth $25. She also brings her political/social opinions into lectures almost everyday, which if you don't agree with, makes the class significantly less enjoyable
Dr. Britt is fantastic! Interesting class, funny and engaging lectures, no pointless assignments, few tests, straightforward reading material, and her expectations are clear. She also gives a fill in the blank study guide that serves as a lecture notes template so if you show up to lectures and take notes you've made yourself an exam study guide!
You only get one skip from discussion section. Attendance for the lecture was randomly taken. The lecture was basically straight from the textbook. I'm bad at public speaking but if you put effort into preparing you will be more than okay. Tests weren't that hard. Read, do the work, and you shouldn't get lower than a B. Very easy class.
Why are you even reading this review. TAKE THIS COURSE. Similar to Dr. Warner or Dr. Evans, you should make time to take this class, and anything else she teaches. Minimal work besides 2 group projects. You have the time. You need to learn what is in this class if you want to become a better person. Very responsive in/out of class. No one gets B.
Dr. Britt is awesome! She's a great public speaker, so you definitely have a role model for the class. She's very easy to get in touch with and loves her students.
Lori is the best! She's super easy to talk to and really cares. The honors version of the course is not hard at all and she gives a ton of time in class to work on group work so very little needs to be done outside of class besides reading.
Down to earth lady but a harsh grader.
Amazing professor. Always had a smile on her face and made the classes very entertaining. Somewhat of a tough grader for presentations but she wants you to succeed. Very easy to talk to and will give very good feedback. I would 10/10 recommend for your GenEd course.
great lady, work hard and you can get a good grade. Must go to class
Britt is invested in her students as people, and really cares. Highly recommend taking this professor if you've got the opportunity.
Lori is a great person. I did not learn a lot from her lecture but she gives good feedback once you turn in a project. I never bought the textbook and got an A- and every freshman has one if you really need to borrow it but it really was not necessary.
The lecture portion of this class is very informative and engaging. I've found it very interesting and Dr. Britt does a good job relating the ideas of communication to the lives of her students. She's a very sweet, funny lady who is also an awesome professor.
Shes a pretty average professor. She gives A LOT of busy work and extra assignments outside of class just as a hassle. Not good, not bad. Just regular professor.
Dr. Britt is awesome. She's super chill really relatable-she understands the reality of college students. What is on the board is usually boring but what she is saying isn't. She's super sweet and seems like she wants everyone to do well. She's graded a few of my assignments (usually our TA does) and she is a fair grader.
Caring professor for sure, just unfortunately teaching a joke of class. Lectures felt like we were taking notes on nothing, yet when the exams came around, studying from the notes would only earn me a C. Very annoying that the class is basically mandatory. In group SCOM, you give two group speeches in a smaller class run by a GA.
Discussion is mandatory, lecture is not. Lori is sweet and funny! She uses up every minute of lecture, just covering what is literally in the text book. I say it's still good to attend class so that you are on track. 2 group speeches, 3 exams, pass MREST, and complete research participations (2.5 points). Straightforward class, still need to study!
Lectures not mandatory, so you have class once a week. Lays out clear grading criteria- follow it and you will pass. There are 2 tests and a final. Tests are online but trust me.. STUDY FOR THEM. She prepares you to pass the MREST and final. Overall easy if you try, but you won't get an A if you don't study. Online learning activities are easy too.
Dr. Britt was awesome and I really enjoyed her class! However, I assumed this class was going to be a relatively easy A, and it was definitely not. The tests were online but they were hard and the TA graded the group presentations very hard compared to others. Would not take again...
two exams (both online), and the final. continued learning activities every week, easy to do, you just have to do them. the hard part of this class are the group presentations, same group all semester, and they're assigned. if you don't get a good group and the pres doesn't go well, this WILL impact your grade so make sure you stay on top of it!!
this was such an easy class if you did every assignment well and tried to show up. two exams (both online), continued learning assignments every week (DO THEM), group presentations (easy as long as you prep for them), and a cumulative final. the TAs were nice too. textbook not needed i just used quizlet for the study guide.
She is an amazing professor! As long as you take notes in class you're good. Her lectures are easy to understand and truly help in life. The continued learning assignments are easy and this class was fun overall. I saw Professor Britt around town and she talked to me like she'd known me forever. Definitely take her for SCOM 123 if you can!!!
So basically one day a week Dr. Britt has a large lecture, and on the other day you are in a smaller session led by a TA. I actually liked that the class was that style. LOVED my my TA (s/o Karan), so that definitely helped me in the class. Dr. Britt keeps lectures interesting but the tests are hard!
There is lecture one day a week and then discussion another day; very good layout. Lori is very nice and cares about her students; lectures aren't mandatory but she occasionally gives extra credit if you go and the notes are helpful for the final exam. Both exams are online and out of class; projects are easy if you follow directions
Dr. Britt is super sweet and accommodating. SCOM123H is a hard, boring class for most people, but she is willing to extend deadlines and has really engaging lectures. Make sure you do the readings though cause she gets really mad when no one reads the assigned textbook readings.
Dr. Britt is very caring which I appreciate. My frustration comes from the feedback because it seemed like we could never fully meet her expectations. Compared to the other SCOM123H teachers she was by far the most challenging.
LOVE HER! There are many opportunities in this class to earn good grades and her study guides for the exam are on point to what she will test you on. If you are someone who can read a chapter per week for her class and do a group assignment each week you will do well in her class. She is very passionate about org comm and a great teacher.
Do not put off the textbook reading! Her lectures are awesome, but you cant pass the tests just off of them. Shes super engaging and makes you think of things you totally overlook.
SCOM 123H Love this professor, especially online. She is accessible and understanding. Two major group projects that can make or break you. Attend class once a week, meet with group the other day. Readings, but easy to pass without reading them. Great class if you get in a great group. Love this professor.
I had a bad experience with Professor Britt as she took a disliking to our group and graded us very hard. Other students in the class got good grades on the group presentations but our group fixed every mistake she told us to fix and followed the rubric and she still gave us an 80. She also couldnt really tell us why she gave us an 80.
She is a very tough grader. We did lots of group presentations and assignments and almost no work on the textbook. Even though the final was on the textbook. She does brief lectures on it and assigns it as reading, but I didn't pay attention to them or read the chapters at all and I got an A-.
Dr. Britt held unrealistic expectations for honors students and made them feel bad when they did not meet these. She knows what she's talking about but grades very harshly and the environment in the class is very stressful and toxic.
Really have enjoyed my class with Dr. Britt so far. She is upbeat, trusts her students, and enjoys seeing us do well. 350 isn't very difficult, however the main course project is you auditing a local biz/neighborhood. So be prepared to work with other students on a fairly long project. Would totally recommend, enjoying so far.
Dr. Britt's lectures are always engaging. This class doesn't take attendance, and the lectures reflect the chapters on the canvas but the chapters definitely must be read as well for the exams. She is relatable in her class but I have personally found her to be a bit rude over email, but that was also situation specific and 100% on me.
Going to the lecture doesn't matter as long as you go to the group discussion. She assigns one assignment per week and their super easy. The midterm was online.
Missing lectures won't affect you at all. Going to the group discussions are important. Don't need to read the textbook, going to the lectures will help for exams. Which are online. You have 2 speeches and group work. Group work is easy As unless your group slacks. Pretty easy and chill class. I'd recommend. Lori is very enthusiastic and nice.
her class is split 1 day with dr britt in lecture and 1 day with a graduate assistant in a smaller class. the ga's are so nice and so chill if you get meg moore you are set. 2 group presentations (if you get a bad group you're screwed) and then weekly assignments that take 20 mins. tests are kinda hard so take good notes but i totally recommend
Dr. Britt herself is easy but I got put with a bad GA. Attendance is mandatory for the smaller section but I never went to the bigger lecture section. I also got put with a really good group, so both speeches (there is only two) I got a good grade on!
Professor Britt is one of the most amazing professors at JMU. She provides the textbook for you online so you don't have to buy it. Lecture and small groups meet one time a week. 3 exams all based on readings so if you do those you're fine. One of the easiest professors for one of the easiest classes at JMU
Britt is a solid choice for SCOM 123. Attendance isn't mandatory and there's no textbook. You can tell she's very knowledgable. Lectures can be a little boring, but overall it's an easy class.
She's a nice professor but can be very strict at times. Classwork is easy and you do have to read the textbook.
This was my favorite class. Class is not mandatory for lectures on Mondays, but go you won't regret it when it comes to the final. You will get an awesome GA for groups on Wednesdays. You have two speeches which make you step out of your comfort zone and learn a lot and allow yourself to grow as a speaker. I highly suggest this class!
I think Lori is a very kind person. The lectures are never full of too much info. Assignments are typically really easy. Presentations are not graded strictly. My only qualm is that she gave us an assignment that was due at 11:59pm. However at 5pm on the day it was due, she closed the assignment and blamed her students for not doing it yet.
Dr. Britt is so nice and explains her lectures very well. Lectures are not mandatory but your meeting day/class with your TA is. All her TA's are very good ESPECIALLY MEGAN MOORE. Megan is literally amazing and so understanding. Grading is done by your TA. Only 3 exams including the final. Studied the night before and got an 89. TAKE BRITT SO EASY
Dr. Britt knows what she is talking about and is passionate! She cares deeply about all her students! The only unfortunate thing was how we were divided into discussion sections which did require attendance once a week with a GA and they were not the greatest! The assignments are easy but there is two big speeches which is standard across SCOM.
Professor Britt is great, but she only teaches the Monday lectures. Wednesday, you'll have a discussion section with a GA. Mine was super nice, but we didn't really do anything (except for the 2 speeches) in discussion sections. Your group is important if you're taking 123.
The class (SCOM 350) is one giant group project and she graded it so hard. Attendance isn't graded but kept for "record-keeping" There is so much busy work and group collaboration on irrelevant assignments. She can have a major attitude, too.
Dr. Britt is a very respectful and intelligent professor. She is truly passionate about the content and wants everyone to succeed. As students you will have a non-mandatory lecture and a mandatory discussion with a GA. This class is a required class, so if you want an A you have to work. Advice: Go to class and meet up with your groups for speeches
I took a Mon/Wed class; monday was a 50 min lecture in a 150 person lecture hall, Wednesday was a smaller 25 person class with a Grad assistant (basically a 22 year old teacher, and most of them are super nice), and the last credit is async. I showed up to 2 monday classes and all wednesdays, and it is super easy. best option for scom, barely went.
attendance not required for weekly lecture but is for discussion section, basically all weekly quizzes are on socratic/quizlet. would reccommend.
Britt is great and very passionate. Really makes sure to explain all concepts and has great informational slides. Good lecturer.
Britt is a great professor. She cares about what she teaches while also caring about her students. She gives extra credit opportunities and as long as you show up and get your work done you will get a good grade in the class. There are two group presentations and a few online quizzes. She is a very tough grader but overall a good class.
Dr. Britt knows that we have other classes and priorities that are more important to us. She gives you two classes to miss before absences count as points deducted from your grade. She gave us a huge extra credit assignment. Her textbook is free and online and she gives us a study guide to prepare us for the final. Overall good professor.
Dr. Britt is great, if you need to take SCOM and her class has spots available definitely sign up. Very caring and nice and tries her best to make the material interesting and understands her students. Very accessible as well, definitely recommend for SCOM. Also provides the textbook online for free and teaches the material on the final :)
I really enjoyed the lectures because everything that Dr.Britt is teaching you will be for the same final that all SCOM sections take. She provides plenty of extra credit, textbook is given free through canvas, only 2 main speeches that are fairly easy and are graded easily depending on your GA.
Your work and grades depend on your GA, but Lori was a great professor that clearly went over the material and provided the textbook for free. We had two presentations in our smaller groups and they were very easy! I recommend you take her for SCOM!!
Dr. Britt is clearly an amazing speaker and if you actually pay attention to her lectures scom will be a breeze for you. She does an excellent job with effectively delivering her point when speaking and also provides a ton of resources on canvas.
Good lectures because she truly cares about the subject. Unfortunately, I had her for discussion group which is rare and man does she grade group presentations rough. You think you have an A level speech and she throws you a B-. Oral citations are extremely important in this class, she screamed at groups that didn't have them in their speech.
She's a great lecturer and offers LOTS of extra credit! Even though attendance is for extra credit, it'll be helpful later on if you go regularly because the final exam is pretty hard for most people. If you're worried about the public speaking for this class, it is VERY minimal and chill compared to other SCOM classes
I only had Dr.Britt for the lecture portion of this class but I enjoyed her teaching style. She made the content easy to understand. Attendance isn't mandatory, but you get extra credit for coming, which can boost your grade. She posts the slides on canvas but they are a lot easier to understand if you went to class.
The undisputed certified greatest of all time JMU communications professor. 8AM or 8PM you better take Lori Britt. Kind, cares about students, understanding, and not challenging. Wants to see you succeed! Take take take take take.
Not fun to work with. Shows disrespect for her students and is tight assed and strict. Small minded and makes assignments way tougher than they need to be. Would rather have not taken her class looking back on it. Not worth the stress nor the learning material.
Best professor at JMU. Only a final exam (no midterm) but attendance is vital. Lots of out-of-class facilitation work but overall awesome. Dr. Britt is the best by far. Don't hesitate.
