Lori was a fun teacher. I didn't like the class simply because of it's nature, but she made class times interesting and the assignments bearable. :)
This was a very fun class. I learned so much and we all loved her as a teacher. She cares about you as an individual and that you understand the materials. Who likes public speaking? Well, after taking the class, you will! Take it with Lori! You will learn a lot, she will take you on "Field Trips" to do service learning w/the Boys and Gilrs Club
Lori is a fun person in general and this is a class that you dont dread going to like most others. The quizes you take are online so you can look up every answer if you want. She is always willing to help you with anything and everything. She is fun and I would definitely take her again, very helpful!
I took this class as a requiremend and now wish I could major in it! Take Lori HW -- she even gives you sample test questions so study these. 2 papers, not too bad, will help you with outlines.
We did this project where we taught high school students communication skills - I decided right there that I did want to be a teacher! Do the work and all will be good. Don't forget the D2L materials they count! Fun class. She cares.
Her class is fun. It was the only one I looked forward to going to everyday. Time flies when you're in Lori's class! The service learning project sucks, but she seems to grade pretty easy. The tests are easy because she gives you a study guide thing that has possible questions and essay questions. I'd take her class if you can.
WOW! Loved it. We had so much freedom in the class. She had three major areas and a lot of class in time to work on it. She expects you to work hard, come prepared and to contribute. Don't put off your speeches - there were a few "readers" who only read speeches and frankly, they were as boring as __ to listen to! We laughed everyday!
Speech 1130 is fun, not 2 hard and a greawt way to get to know people at school. Take it with Lori!
She is an awesome teacher. I took her in the summer and although it went really fast she was very helpful throughout all of it. She has a lot of energy and makes class interesting. Plus any teacher that will bring bakery dohnuts to class is steller in my book. She liked our class so much we had a pot-luck for the last day.
Hey - I was in the same class! It was so fun one guy did the "Wave" before each of our speeches. yes, completely what I did not expect. Each day there was some surprise and I even cried for a few speeches - people opened up, talked about true feelings, stories, etc. Don't get me wrong we worked our *#$ off! She expects a lot and gives even more!
I took this online - in the summer - don't do it unless you want to work BUT do take it with LORI! She answers all email immediately, meets with you if needed, edits outlines, encourages you, and creates on campus workshops! We met in small groups to give our speeches - we did laugh a lot, she uses rubber chickens for time signals-need I say more?
Our online class was more like a group of friends by the end - I couldn't believe it! We would chat, email, etc. to each other or w/lori. she made class fun and interactive - she amswered all emails so fast and would go through all of our outlines so carefully w/us. I felt well prepared. It was fun and not too hard. It was clear w/what to do.
Lori is a very out going teacher! I remember thinking ...... "At least I won't fall asleep." She has lots of energy and is extreemly interesting.
I was so afraid of this class. I do not like to give speeches. The group was very supportive and Ms. Halverson is great at helping everyone feel at home. When we gave toasts at the end of the semester, it was like there were people really tearing up! (the toasts were to each other). She made class fun and it was my favorite.
I was moved by this class. We got into issues of who we are as members of a culture. I was forced to think of things I haven't before - loved it. Take it!
I have the class now, this summer. We have a good time and it is work. But we really take time to get to know each other. Good class.
Easy class - do the work, get paper work in. Do the D2L - or you will be sorry. Fun. Good teacher. Helpful.
Extremely energetic and complimentary - probably the nicest teacher I've come across in a really long time. I was impressed by her organization and clarity, as speech teachers aren't normally so. Overall, the summer course was a whirlwind of work, but she was very understanding. A definite reccommend. Fostered class participation and bonding.
Hands on and only online quizzes. Easy assignments - if you do the work. Hard on slackers. She'll give you a zero if you don't do the work - do it and you'll be fine. Do it well - you'll do well. Great teacher - fun and always available.
This class keep me afloat this year. It was my favorite. You dointro, info, persuasive, group and celebration speeches - which are fun. Ask for help, she'll give it. Ditto to do your work and it will be a great class! Take time to get to know the classmates, this helps.
Lori is awesome. Class is fun, especially if you get to know each other. Just make sure you do the written work. She gives a lot of it so that if you aren't that great at public speaking, you can still do good in the class. I was always afraid of giving speeches, but she has made it much easier for me. Take her if you can.
I have this class now, online - let me tell you, taking a public speaking class online is no easy thing! She is great - she answers email right away, is online all teh time and is even willing to meet on campus. we use SKYPE to talk to her too. See online book quizzes and the CD before quizzes - they really are 50% or more of our quizzes.
good class - good teacher
Good teacher. Assignments were layed out with clear deadlines from the beginning. Took class online.
easy class if you do your work. lori cares about students and will help you. pretty liberal but not biased (i am very conservatie - we had fun debating)
lori was fantastic. so good at what she does and helping out. easy to contact. super willing to go out of her way to help you out. i enjoyed her class, she always made it fun. public speaking was scary for me but she always had fun games to relax the atmosphere. i would take a class with her again in a heart beat!
I took this online - I thought it might be easier online - but you do a lot of writing and reading. However, Lori is a good teacher and like it says below - do the work, try, come to the campus to give your speeches and you will do great. We actually got to be close as a group - so it is a good class. I learned a lot and felt comfortable w/speeches
She is pretty nice, but don't ask her for a letter of reccomendation. It took her 5 months to complete mine, since I am PSEO. She has procrastination issues, and that is the honest truth. She thinks when you write her an email explaining your problems with something that you are attacking her. She is different, but ok overall.
Lori is the best. She not only helped me with the class but answered all emails within minutes. Her letter of rec. for my medical school application was the best I received. She made me write a resume/list my honors/why I was going to that school. THEN we went through the letter to see if it could be improved. I have never had a prof help so much!!
fun-infomred-dynamic - good teacher.
She is a fairly fun teacher. Kinda jokes around and such in class. But for me, thats where the good stops. She seems to nit-pick every little thing you say during a speech, which i suppose is a good thing, but it makes it hard to get an A. As a previous poster said, she has serious procrastination issues, sometimes not grading something for weeks!
This class helped me to understand why I get so worked up about giving speeches - or even stating my opinion. If you want to feel better about yourself, take this class w/Lori. The grades are fair and you always knwo why you have the grade you do. She gives really complete critiques.
Go to CAMBODIA with Lori! This will CHANGE your life! I can not begin to write here what the class, the trip, the other students or Lori means to me. My life will never be the same. Lori teaches a travel study trip - take it, take any class w/her! Just do it!
Good teacher and an ok class since you have to have it - you might as well have a good time. Take Lori, you won't be disappointed.
Lori is the best speech teacher ever. Loves people, loves helping you improve. Don't worry about getting laughed at, just make sure you are prepared, and have done all your work. No class for slackers - you have to work. You really get to know the other people in class = more fun. You MUST show up, and DO THE WORK ON TIME! I HIGHLY recommend Lori!
I took online speech 1114 with Lori. She was great. She is so professional and humerous. She has a great attitude and is very positive towards her students. She is willing to help you out alot if you are willing to do the work. Great teacher.
You will learn about yourself and your relationships. When given a choice to write a paper about a movie or your own life, I suggest you write about yourself. It is online and as always, it is what you put into it. Lori will go the extra mile with you to give feedback, you meet on SKYPE/person/phone it helps! She is the best online teacher I've had
Read the pages, do the homework, and really give it some thought and you'll get an A. Took the course online and really enjoyed it!
I enjoyed the class and the work we did. This class was not hard but not easy. She enjoys what she does and that helps you feel good about the work you do. She makes your work seem important too, even if it is "just" a speech.
good class and good teacher
Great teacher, very organized. If you put in the time and effort, you will get a lot out of the class. She is super nice, very helpful, and good at what she does!!! Would suggest taking a class with her, she is great!!
Very very nice person. She is very helpful and if you work hard, you will do well in her class.
This class is about being a better person in relationships and she does care that you become that person. Assignments are about you so not hard, but about you so hard. Keep on track though! She wll do anything to help. Her letters of reccomendation are perfect
Lori believes in her students and she is very helpful.
Lori is a very good teacher. I took an online course. If you just do the homework and comment back to other people you should not worry about failing. She gives a lot of extra credit, and instead of writing papers all the time she lets you do whatever you want that can demonstrate what the unit was about.
I took this as a hybrid because I am PSEO - it was nice to not go to classes. Keep online thou! You need to do SKYPE a lot. Don't miss when there are classroom days. Makes class fun.
Simple: take thsi class w/Lori! You will have no regrets and will enjoy class.
We had fun yet learned how to be effective in communication. Do not skip class. Keep in contact if you are scared, she will help every day if needed (i know, i was there every MWF at noon - lol!). Get to know your classmates you will learn more and have more fun. When we ended the class with our toasts and awards, people really knew each other!
Take this class when Mrs. Halverson-Wente is teaching so you can laugh each day and feel good about yourself. Oh, you will learn too. Read the book and do your online work. Oh, do that D2L work or you will be sorry and you will get a good grade (even if you are more scared of speaking than snakes and death and height)
I miss this class. It helped me and now I miss my class and Lori. It was fun and helpful.
This class is helping be become a better speaker. The free book is great. Teacher is fun and cares. Don't miss your work and keep a calendar nearby. If you fall behind, ask for help.
FREE TEXTBOOK the teacher is fun and knowledgeable too.
nice lady, bad teacher
She volunteers internationally and inspires you too.
I was on the Cambodia trip. Changed. My. Life. Thank you Lori and to Kim and Rainsey. This trip has made me think differently. My service project was so small compared to what I can do now! Lori has us give presentations and we get together all the time. People from years ago still help. Go on the trip!
If you hate public speaking Lori will help you. go to class and dont fal lbehind in D2L. Listen to the feedback and try to enjoy your time. Our class is early and we are tired but she is alive and wired, maybe too much coffee who can like public speaking so much?
I also went o n the Cambodia trip 4 years ago. I have so many honors due to this and my life is enriched and changed. Thank you Lori.
Assignments are long but fun. Ge to know classmates. She makes is a great class. Do your onlnle work. Free book .
I was really struggling and Lori helped me very much.
This is an online class and it was hard but you work in groups. lori makes you SKYPE or meet to talk about outlines so you know if you are doing ok and you geet class feedback so you know you rea doing ok. I met many outstanding classmates in delivery day groups. free book so you save money.
Be prepared to do some work when it comes to speeches. Also the book is online and you can use the book to take your quiz. She's clear on what she needs but if you miss class a lot she tends to get annoyed with that. She can also get kind of annoying at times with assignments and during speeches if you exceed your time even by a few seconds.
I asked for help multiple times and never got responses. It could just be me, as other students seemed to have a better time with it, but I was immediately drowned in homework without much help from the professor.
She made class easy with activities. Always had lab days so you can work on speeches as you go. People got to know each other well.
Lori is an amazing person. She is always there to cheer you on. Even if your speech is the worst speech she has ever heard, she makes you feel like you did alright and always finds something good to say. I took her in the summer and while it was short, it was very fast paced. Pretty much a speech a week. Work intensive, but worth it.
We laughed each day with a song of the day or a video clip that had to do with our class topic. Speeches were easy since you had a worksheet to follow. Some students did not do D2L work which is the key to getting the best grade besides showing up and giving the speeches. IF you are afraid, talk to the teacher. Lori met me to practice.
No tests only papers. Great speakers. My favorite was our field trips but you do not need to go but you should becuase you will meet people in the community. We met refugees and immigrants who are working so hard and are really changing things. Go to the temple if you can. We also went to the mosque. Comments on papers help.
Lori was a teacher that was more passive aggressive than helpful. Her intentions may have been good but her tactics on teaching had a negative effect for many people. I found her expectations were too high which made it difficult to improve.
Lori gave feedback and positive encouragement. The class works together to help. The book is free. She cares if you come. I took her again in the summer for an online class too. I will take the full COMM program now. Thank you for all your help.
Many guest speakers and site visits help the class become real. Teacher helps you make connections. Mayo Clinic speakers give you insight of local culture. Cambodian speakers show you what happened in genocide. Just papers and no exams. Strong impact.
COMM 2100 was online for me. Lori meets you on SKYPE or on campus and that makes the class more like you are involved. The local site visits can make a big difference in getting to know your classmates and the teacher. It helps you to learn about the book and will make a difference in your papers. Go get noodles with Kim and Lori.
Lori is great. work hard on your speeches and have a solid OUTLINE, and you'll get an A. They're likely more important than the delivery of the speech, so don't slack. Only hw is speech prep and "self critiques" (watch your speech, look for ways to improve) some online quizzes which are easy. She's fun to learn from, and I would recommend her!
I was not a COMM major until this class.
Our class was visted by members of our diverse community. I became a volunteer from one of the projects. I had the most honest conversations with others in a class ever. I honestly had never spoken , well honestly, to a Muslim before. I am sorta ashamed of that but no longer afraid of conversation and kowning new people.
We had a community wide meeting. Our classmates put on a full event where the President of the College came, all the Vice Presidents and many instructors where there. We invited all of our semester guests who came each week and had a public forum. I have never even talked to the College president and Representataives!
Lori is so caring about her students and wants to see us succeed. The only problem I saw with her is that she expects to much from us, this is our first public speaking class cut us some slack. Anyways speech is an easy class, just prepare and follow the criteria and you'll do fine. I recommend Lori as a professor, SHE'S AWESOME!
Do you work and don't fall behind. When you have a problem, use the latebox option and talk to Lori. Each week you do part of your speech online. Just do all your speech at one time ahead and then it is so easy. You will have to give the speech and do the work anyway. Remember to reply. At conferences she tells you how to fix things pre-grade.
We worked hard on getting ready to write. I was afaid of writing an essay. However, Lori worked with me on Google Docs to make sure I did well. I went from a B to A!
Speech is people gave improved over the semester. I was so afraid but actually became better myself.
I had Lori at Metro State, she was by far one of the best profs I have ever had. She makes sure to keep in contact with students through, email, phone, or text. She wants everyone to succeed. Public speaking can be nerve wrecking to some but she makes sure everyone feels comfortable so they can succeed in her class. Wonderful class she is amazing.
I was very afraid of public speaking. Lori was there to listen before the class stated. She would come at 8 or 8:30 or stay after just to listen to speeches. This helped me. Please speak up if you are afraid.
She will help you practice out of class and then goes through the video with you. Also this semester she let you do a redo. You could average 2 tries together. Saved my grade! I had to write an essay but hey I got my grade up, dont blow off the last celebration speech. Its still a speech even if easy. Some jerks did (swore in video even. Odd).
Do the homework as if you are writing the essay, she sets up discussions so you quote the book and talk about what you are doing to go to site visits. If you do this, then the final paper is a breeze. She promised they will flow together and they do. Read the feedback (she might even say resubmit, a friend did not and regrets this). Gret feedback.
Lori is a good teacher. If you work hard on preparing your speeches and follow the format that she suggests, you should be just fine. In this class, it is very important that you meet the time constraints of your speeches. Lori is always open to help students and makes it easy to ask questions.
First, I hate public speaking. Lori does not. She helps you see why it is needed in your work and life and even as a citizen (she is big into the big picture). I still don't really like public speaking, but the special thing is that I know I can do it. Lori cared to tell me why my speaking matters. We also had fun in class (awards, etc.).
She made her class fun and also made students work for their grades. I am a very shy person & was afraid of taking speech. In all honesty Lori will go above and beyond for her students. She doesn't' compare students with each other but she compares how the student did when they entered the class vs the when it ended. It's all about what you put in
There is a very fine line between being helpful and hurtful. Lori crosses that line. There comes a point when there is TOO much information being posted for her online students. It makes it very hard to keep up and understand all concepts of the class. She is very strict on following her strict outlines rather than what may work best for you.
I improved in my public speaking. We met in small groups so that was easy for me. Everything is ready for you with checklists each week. Don't video tape, come to campus to give the speeches.
For an online professor she was updated on assignments more quickly than the ones I usually have. If not, she will make an announcements to not worry you. She actually reads and gives good feedback on. your assignments. I truly felt I became a better communicator through this class. (totally thought I was going to learn much)
Totally understanding. Very active in class. Makes long classes an activity. Today in class a homophobic comment was made by a student. She called it out. I respect that. I wish all teachers would take the time to make the class a safe space. The guy was like a little kid, I hope he drops.
what can i say about his lady! SHE'S AMAZING she knows her students and truly wants them to succeed. She will help you get through whatever it is you want to. I had her 10 years ago and I'm still in contact with her today.
Fun class where we get to talk, use music analogyies, and even "sculpt" relationship models. We had a great group. The speakers were intense, so she gives trigger warnings. Keep up with work. It is a easy until you don't do it.
Lori is WONDERFUL. You will get to know her, as she posts weekly announcements and meets with you two time with on the phone or in person throughout the course (Midterm Interview and Final Interview). There are weekly quizzes, always open book, and weekly discussions for the online classes. You write 3 papers throughout the semester, easy A.
She turned me from a person who absolutely hates public speaking into a person who still dislikes public speaking, but is at least able to do it. The textbook she uses is online, don't worry about buying anything. Don't panic after seeing 180 topics on D2l, most of that you'll never have to look at.
Lovely person, but kind of hard to follow. She is very accommodating and wants to make class fun. She does tend to have tangents and the outlines she gives out for speeches have unclear instructions. She offers an online version of the textbook so you dont have to buy a hard copy, and she doesnt give out many tests for Public Speaking.
We had 4 units of speeches. The last was celebration speeches and that shows how much we got to know each other. Toasts were meaningful and fun. Outlines need attention for 2 speeches. D2L is used for homework and o utlines. Use your book for self critiques. Ask any questions. Our class was close and I am taking COMM 2100 with Lori next.
Lori is a very nice & welcoming professor but she is also very unorganized. She expects her students to be VERY creative & her assignments are quite lengthy. She is one of those people who think their opinion is the only right answer. She takes forever to grade & to respond to emails. She is very open about her political and religious views.
Lori is GREAT! I would take another class with her as my teacher. She is VERY caring for her students. She wants you to succeed, & if you need help, SHE IS THERE. You will need to read your textbook, but the class I took was very easy to keep up with and complete assignments. You get the results based on the work you put into this class!
Lori holds office hours and lets oyu call her before 7 pm. Always there. Feedback sessions from your speeches let you know why you have the grade you do. Read your written feedback she gives a lot and you go over it in Zoom or phone conferences. 4 speeches and easy quizzes that are open book, disucssions.
This is my best Instructor for public speaking. She made giving speech easy and achievable. She is very organised and you can reach her anytime. She also responds to email often. Please take her class and I bet you will not regret it. She is an amazing instructor.
Lori is very outgoing and kind, but she is wildly scatterbrained and unprepared. The syllabus changes rapidly and isn't consistent. Due dates are seemingly random at times, assignment packets are opened on a Sunday and you are expected to have a draft done by that Wednesday, while other assignments that are far less time consuming get over a week.
Real gem. Cares a lot for her students. Obvious she wants all her students to succeed. She is caring and is a reasonable with grading. Approaches the course material in a fun and manageable way. One of the best teachers I've has at RCTC. 10/10 would recommend taking even if not required for credit.
Lori is a great professor. You will learn a lot from her. She is kind in her critiques and gives helpful insight.
Speech is already a dreaded class, but Lori made it so much more enjoyable! She is really easy to get a hold of and will open up times for you to meet with her at any point. She gives really thoughtful feedback and really cares about all of her students! I would definitely recommend her to anyone.
Such a great teacher. So nice, so wonderful, so great. Inspirati
Lori is a great instructor and respectful critiquer in her public speaking class. If you turned in an assignment a day or two late she would usually still take it for full credit. She was understanding if you were sick or had another reason for not turning in an assignment or showing up for an appointment on time. 10/10 would take another class!
If you are scared of taking a speech course, this is the one to take. The work can be challenging and your speeches are a huge chunk of your grade, but she responds quickly and with great feedback. You can catch up if you struggle. There are a LOT of resources she gives to help you. Participate and use the resources and you will get a good grade.
Her class is very well-organized and easy to stay on track with.
Took her in the summer - lots of work but it goes fast and she is fair. Groups were great to give speeches in. We had a fun group and Lori met us all summer session to help.
She was passionate about the work that she has done, but had many flaws. As a teacher, she was very condescending, self-centered, and not very diligent with timing. She was always late to conferences, and would never be the one to initiate rescheduling if she missed your conference. And never would apologize if she was the one who made a mistake.
Lori give you a cell phone number to call for any trouble. We gave 3 speeches. The last speech is harder but the first two no problem. Quizzes are easy. She drops 6 low scores. She takes late work.
My grandfather died during the tie I took this class with Lori. I am still so sad. She helps by listening and reaching out. No one else seemed to notice. I am shy. People often don't see me. I felt seen.
Best teacher that I've had, she is challenging, yet compassionate. She works with you to make your experience great. She truly cares about her students and wants them to get the best out of her class. HIGHLY recommend
Lori is a super kind and caring teacher who genuinely wants you to succeed. I was very worried about taking speech, but she made it a good experience. She gives detailed feedback. There is a lot of homework each week, but only three major speeches. Homework includes textbook reading + quizzes, discussions + replies, impromptus, speeches, etc.
Professor Lori is THE best professor ever, she is the most caring. She genuinely wants her students to succeed. She helped me deliver my speech with confidence and I actually learned how to give better speeches after her class. Highly recommend!
Lori is amazing. She is caring and fun, and she gets it when you have stuff going on outside of school. she is always there to listen to concerns and will figure something out. She is not a super tough grader but you still have to put in effort. I 100% recommend taking a class with her.
I will take another class in the summer with Lori. Great experience.
Lori is very kind and wants you to succeed. Her class is a little all over the place, and you need to be diligent to know what's going on. Stay on top of things, and this class will be no problem!
After missing a lot of class, Lori was very empathetic to why I had been gone and allowed me (and all of the students in her class) to make up late work no matter how late it is. She is great, and my confidence with public speaking has vastly improved.
I had a miscarriage and was so sad. Lori did not leave me to just drop. She helped me find resources and tutors. We got through. Best teacher I have had. Thank you Lori!
I had a mess in my life this summer, Lori helped me get back on track the class is like therapy. Do your work it is fast. she gave clear feedback.
Lori is a very caring and passionate professor with a wealth of knowledge. This class does have a lot of assignments and work expected (especially when taken during the very short summer session), but if you work ahead, do the readings, and carefully read the instructions, you can do very well.
Professor Halverson-Wente's class was high quality. She gives clear expectations and is a more than fair grader. She provides exceptional feedback and is more than happy to work with you on your speeches. Throughout the course she was very reachable and gave prompt responses. I would highly recommend her and absolutely take a class with her again.
I took this last spring and am in a class with her again. I enjoy speakers in class and we ahve them again for interpersonal. I like hearing a wide variety of people talk about how t hings are for them.
I took her for hybrid so my review could be different for every else but I thought she was solid teacher. Sometimes she gets caught up with other classes and takes awhile to grade but overall a very solid teacher and taught me a lot.
We looked at many cultures and it was self defined. Got out of my bubble. Wish I had it in person.
