Very good prof, not an easy one but the best for the introductory courses
No Comments
Very good teacher. Relates subject matter to real situations very well.

If you do the reading, the homework and come to class..you can do well. It is also helpful to go to office hours, but in general, it is the easiest core Econ class.
Great teacher
Not at all a difficult class (for economics), and the lectures are presented clearly.
Kind of a mean lady, but good professor.
exams are too hard, too long, and too confusing
It's not too bad if you keep up with the work.
meh....cant argue, but tests are really hard
Helps to see her outside of class, the tests are ridiculous
Just make sure you take the time to understand the material before the tests if you're struggling. That is the only pitfall with this class. Otherwise, really great.

Dont even think about it...
Not too difficult of a class and fairly interesting. Lectures are clear and exams generally straight-forward. She is quite the character as well - her outfits, stylish rattail, strutting, and responses to questions always kept me very entertained in the early morning. A worthwhile course.

Great Class. Learned a lot. Take it!

Not a very friendly person... and a little bizarre with the rattail, etc. But she knows her stuff-make sure you read chapters first and REALLY understand the concepts, she elaborates a lot more than the book.. the tests are REALLY ridiculous.
I love her. She makes a large lecture interesting, and she's easy to understand. She's a tough lady, and a little wierd but you gotta love her. You learn some fun stuff, it's not really hard and it's a good experience.
Lori Leachman is a very straightforward, fair teacher. She knows all of her material by heart, brilliant woman by all accounts. If you understand her lectures, you will do well to very well on the tests. Great class.
Econ 1D is a good class and Dr. Leachman is a GREAT lecturer. Her tests are fair and truly measure whether or not you know the material. If you study a lot, you will do well. Lectures are easy to follow because she draws out every graph on an overhead projector and knows the material by heart.
Leachman is a ****. Go to class just to see her, she's an interesting character and a good lecturer. The class is easy, esp. with her new online homework system. Best teacher I had this semester, by far.
Dr. Leachman is a stud. She knows her material like the back of her hand and really knows how to teach students - they even put the transparencies and lecture recordings on BlackBoard now so it's very accessible. The tests, on the other hand, are REEEdiculously hard!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Grading is arbitrary, right answers are wrong if it differs from key on exams. Prior econ knowledge will actually hurt you because you will answer differently from key. Exams are uncurved while the average is in C range. Lecture is really unclear and bad.
she was unbelievably clear and consise and I learned so much

Dr. Leachman speaks to her students as if they were first graders. Her tests are arbitrarily drawn from material that is not covered in class or the textbook. She is also a flaming liberal who allows her political bias to taint every lecture she gives.

leachman is a great professor who makes class easy and her tests are ridiculously easy if you have any brains at all and can memorize well
lectures are hard to follow. doesn't curve and gives tests that are hard to prepare for. she's gotten alot harder recently. take this course from someone else if you want to get an A
Her tests are IMPOSSIBLE!
Leachman is a great lecturer - she manages to engage students in a HUGE class (350+!!). Yea, her tests are pretty hard and she does not curve..some students could hate her for that... Personally, I liked her a lot, and i would recommend her. She's VERY smart, she has the lecture routine down pat - and she has a sweet rat tail!
As cool as a class average of a 79 is in an intro econ clas is, maybe a little bit of a curve at the end would help.
Leachman's lectures were difficult to follow. When asked to clarify a subject her explanations were often quite different than her original explanation. Here exams were difficult. Though the long answer essays tend to be pretty straight forward her multiple choice questions often have you wondering if you've attended the same lecture covered.
She really knows her stuff, but I feel that her lectures tended to be closed minded and hard to follow. The only thing that saved me was that she posts her lectures online that you can download. Don't expect much sympathy from this lady, and don't even try to question her reasoning. And try not to get destracted by her rat tail...
Lectures are pretty good. Online homework is ridiculously easy and does not adequately prepare you for the tests. Tests are needlessly difficult and hard to prepare for.
Her lectures are quite interesting. Tests are not too difficult, but there's no curve.
One of the worst professors I have had at Duke. She answers questions in a demeaning fashion and tends to snap at people. Her lectures are pretty haphazard and she seems to think that she is teaching a lot more in depth than she actually does. The grading is pretty rough, and don't expect her to budge. Also, please cut that rat tail off.
Worst of my professors in Duke. Not taking anymore econ because of her
Average for the exam 2 was 68.5!!!! Before taking the test, I felt pretty much prepared and confident, but after getting my test back, I freaked out!!!! I wish I had taken Econ 55 instead of 51D!
Dr. Leachman is one of my favorite professors this semester. Her lectures are very interesting and you can tell that she really knows her stuff. My only complaint is that the tests are pretty hard and there is no curve, but if you listen to her lectures online and go to class, you'll do just fine. All of her questions come straight from lecture.
Dr. Leachman is a really great teacher I think. Although she is somewhat intimidating at first, she is really nice (especially if outside of class at office hours, etc.). She makes everything clear...and at the beginning of each lecture sums up what she spoke about at the last class. Also there is usually an optional final- so thats a plus.
If you're willing to work out of class before the exam this class isn't impossible. I didn't do anything (read, go to class) before the second exam and got a solid A by watching the lecture video online and taking notes, then pretty much memorizing those notes.. Lecture video! Why don't all lectures have this?
Really the worst I ever had. I did not enjoy the course at all.
Professor Leachman is brilliant & I learned a lot from lectures. That said, she is a v. malevolent woman. Ask someone from 51 about her email. Her lectures are great, easy to follow, but basically, you must memorize them for the test. The tests, oh god the tests. Right now, only 10 of 450 have an A in the class. Something is wrong with her grading.
Leachman is a smart woman, and her lectures are for the most part clear, but the grading on the tests is horrible. Any creative attempt at answering a question is harshly punished... you must say exactly what was said in lecture to get full credit for a question. Shame that such interesting material has to be ruined with stressfull, unfair tests.
There's no room for interpretation on her tests-- if it didn't come out of her mouth (can't use textbook answers), it's not right. Her lectures contradict the textbook, her tests are ridiculously hard, and she is a very malevolent woman. She will demean her students during the regrade. In a frustrated email, she said her student's weren't "special"

Really, really hard tests - the scary kind where you can walk out afterwards but totally clueless on how it went, because the grading is so arbitrary. And the fact that there is no scaling really hurts considering the test averages are 68-70ish. Despite the rat-tail, she can be scary and means business.
In a 400 person class where the lectures are posted on blackboard (audio/video/transparencies) you have no reason to go. I actually improved my test scores by listening to the lectures at home rather than waking up early to go. I would take this class again but I wouldn't waste my $ on the textbook. You don't need it. Homework is a gift so do it.

all you have to do to succeed is learn how to read leachman's mind. that's all. in one semester.
Ridiculous. Wow.. In a class of 450 people, 10 people had -A and up. No curves. That's about 1/50. Arbitrary grading. Very rude at times to students. Open criticism. Impossible tests. All you ever do is memorize. Really worked my butt off for this class and I think I'm gonna get B+. Ridiculous......
hm i'm pretty sure more than 10 people had A-... i got an A- and i had less than 90. well anyway, the tests are ridiculously hard, and you often have to be able to read the prof's mind. my biggest regret is buying the textbook, it was so expensive and so unused. however this means all you have to do is listen to lectures to do fine.
this lady is the absolute devil... DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH HER ... her tests are vague, she goes off on tangents too often, she gets angry when you ask a question and should not be teaching any course here at duke... her tests do not test how well you know the material and she is an absolute ****!!!!
Leachman is a great professor, but she should not be teaching an intro course. She really knows her stuff and lectures are interesting, and PACKED with information. Extremely helpful that lectures were online. TA's were worthless. The tests were graded unfairly at times. No HW really, but tests required a huge amount of studying. Got 89.3, A-.
material was pretty easy, tests were ridiculous by comparison. the grading was absurd as well. the graders were very incompetent. she does a good job of simplifying the concepts to an understandable level. i always thought i understood the material at an A level, then got b's. sent a rude email after people complained about grading on test 2.
Leachman is a very smart teacher but a horibble test maker and grader. She's so ridiculous that you just have to laugh. This is a quote from one email she wrote to us. "all of you are smart...this also means that while you were "special" in your previous life- the fact that all of you are special means that none of you are...this is the beginning o
Lori is knowledgeable in Economics, but that's all she cares about. She wants you to know how smart she is. She is not helpful, nor encouraging.
Grading is incomprehensible. You will answer questions correctly but get them graded wrong because most of the 100 possible answers were not on the key. You will do badly on papers if you do not address the topics in her hidden answer key of sub-topics she wants you to write about, but refuses to disclose beforehand.
Lori Leachman is pure evil. She enjoys the failure of her students. She makes an interesting subject matter as boring and mindless as possible. Then, she grades you terribly for not giving the exact answer she wanted for papers, tests, questions, etc. Pure Evil.
This woman removed any interest I had in the subject of Economics within one half of a semester. Definitely not recommended for students wishing to "dabble" in the field.
Worst Professor I've had at Duke. Incredibly unhelpful and tests are ridiculous and do not test your understanding of economics. do not take Econ55 with her.
people say that she took pleasure from failing students and i got the same impression until i actually spoke with her one on one. she will sit down with you and explain things. she does want you to understand the material you just have to understand that this is a weeding out course it's supposed to be hard
the ratings say it all.... except its the opposite of what they say. so yeah.
I have all A/A+s at Duke except for one class: Econ 51 with Lori Leachman. Her tests are ridiculous, and after the bottom 25% of the class withdrew (they were failing), she still curved the class to a B- and only 5-10 students got As in a class of 300. Her lectures are actually really good, so if you don't care for a good grade, take her class.

Best professor I've had at Duke. Comes off as intimidating, but is actually cool and cares about her students learning. Get to know her. Great lecturer; homework is a gift. Answers to questions in class are entertaining. Tests are tough, but keep up with the lectures (you can download them) and an A- is no problem. Take 51 the semester she teaches.
Leachman is a straight up character. The strut, outfits, and laugh made class real entertaining. Knows the material by heart and tests exactly what she says. Cares that her students learn. Download the lectures because you can pause when she goes too fast. Put in the time and you will love her. But if you slack off you will wind up out of Econ
This class was a lot better than I expected. Lectures were online, final was optional, and she took kids out to dinner. She's scary smart but real nice. Leachman made me want to major in econ.
She knows her stuff, but the class has a terrible structure. No curve. I got a B when I did MUCH better than everyone else. The average grade was probably a C. Audit the class because its interesting, but DO NOT take it for a grade if you want a high GPA.
Pros: Leachman knows her stuff. She'll just start lecturing from memory, without any notes. Most articulate teacher I've had. Cons: I got a C in the class and I put in a fair amt of time. Tests are completely arbitrary, points taken off randomly. Good class for learning econ, but if you want to keep your GPA, then don't take it.
She is actually a great professor, though one may get intimidated by her at first. Quite clear and straight forward in teaching and if you don't get the material you can go back and listen to it online. the test is hard. you can't ask for too much when in a 400 people's lecture.
I don't get her bad rep.Shes an amazing professor that knows all the material. I am dumbfounded by her ability to at the beginning of class basically recite last lecture in 10 minutes. Hard class, but I would say easy B if you just study the week before the test (and do the practice). Would take again in a heartbeat. Go to dinner with her for sure.
she has a reputation of being hard, inconsiderate and unreasonable but for the life of me i don't know where that's come from. i can't unerstand why people don't like her. she's absolutely amazing. great lecturer.brilliant.very fair. really cool person.wants her students to do well but won't compromise their learning. can't wait to take her again!
She gets a bad reputation, but I really don't know why. She's a great professor who really does know exactly what she's talking about. She can be very intimidating at first, but she's not scary at all. Her class isn't easy, but if you put the proper amount of time into it, you can coast.
Leachman's a very smart woman. She is also a good teacher. However, if you slack off (like I did) your grade won't be good. I don't like her grading system. The average in the class was around a C. I think she would be a hell lot better if she put a curve.
Lori is a good lecturer. She manages to keep it fair for everyone in a huge class of 400 people. Yes, her class is pretty tough and, if you don't work a minimum, you might fail, or get a C- rather easily.. You do not need to read the book but do listen to her recordings. Also, go have dinner with her, it'll change the perception you have of her.
It's completely up to you to do the work and learn the material. She puts it out there and doesn't care if you make an effort to learn it. She does, however, make the material clear (definitely not easy, but clear). So if you're willing to work hard and pay attention to her lectures, it's interesting and you can get through it.
I actually enjoyed this class! Leachman is undeniably brilliant, but very abrasive and often rude. All the notes are videorecorded online which is VERY helpful - went to class only a few times. Exams are tough, but I got an A- fairly easily - I crammed the night before on each test (including the final), went to bed by 2am, and still did well.
Great lecturer; she ties current events into her lecture well. Changed the way I read the paper. Ignore the textbook. Use lectopia (even if you write the best notes do it) and you'll make an A. Highly recommended.
extremely fair. tests required intense studying but were not impossible. all lectures were reproduced (visual and audio) online for reference or if you decided not to attend class
She is a little intimidating, but overall pretty good. Class seems pretty easy until the tests, a little bit of a weed out class.
Honestly, she's a pretty good teacher. But due to the large class size she has to make her class non-curved, which makes it unfair for people who actually try very hard but aren't geniuses at Econ. I did learn a lot, and she goes at a fast pace that I appreciated.
Don't take this class if you've never taken economics before
Though it is clear that Leachman knows her stuff, she makes her tests very difficult and the average is usually between a 72-75 and she never curves it. If you work your tail off, study, do the homeworks, and go to office hours you can probably get a B/B+.
Great teacher although not very approachable. Tests are hard.
She is a tough teacher. I'm a conceptual student, so I usually try and understand material to pass classes, but for her, it was rote memorization. If you are able to memorize a lot of material, then you will succeed. A lot of the tests were simply applying her straight logic and wording right onto the problem given. Not for me.
Not as good as Fullenkamp, but knows the material well and teaches well. Although she gets the rep of being a very tough teacher, it seems like most students end up with a grade in the B range (source: www.gradeabase.com/Duke%20University_econ_51.htm ).
She is a really good lecturer. Her tests are really hard, but there is a great curve on the grades. She is not very approachable.
Very clear lecturer. Tests aren't too hard, but you do have to rush through them a little and there's alot to remember. Lecture is good for asking questions, but even more importantly, watch the recordings online (so that you can pause/rewind)--I never went to lecture and did this instead. Book reading is helpful, but optional. Very little HW.
If you asked me who the most awesome person in the world is, I would probably say Lori Leachman. She is a fantastic lecturer, so I can overlook the fact that she does liberal things like read the New York Times. My only regret is that she is not my best friend. If you think this class is hard, you are wrong. Go major in sociology.
She's intense, brilliant and a great professor. If you listen to her lectures you should do fine on the exams. The material is not easy; you have to do the work but it's definitely worth it.
Smart, knows her stuff, but doesn't care what you understand- just what you memorize. Grading is a joke. I had answers word-for-word from her notes given 0 credit. Random "-1's" on tests. Threatened to dock points for submitting for regrade. I learned more reading the extra credit book in 2 days than I did from taking her class. Terrible experience
Professor Leachman is a great lecturer and although there were over 250 students in the class, I still think I was able to learn a lot. The post-doc TAs, however, were awful at grading and unhelpful throughout the course. They make way too many mistakes in the grading and are unresponsive to e-mail. They have trouble doing basic stuff like adding.
Lori knows her stuff. What is hard about her class is that what she teaches is not everything on the test. If you attend lecture and take notes/study, you should get a B if you work hard. That A needs the thought process of an economist who has been in the profession for over five years. She thinks she is requiring us to "think".. yeah right Lori.
Pretty good professor altogether. very clear not as bad as people make her out to be.
Very good lecturer. She is intimidating at first, but if you show her you are willing to learn, she is willing to help you. The class is definitely tough, but if you attend lectures and office hours (the TAs are not the greatest) then you will do okay. Large class but she teaches it just like a normal 30 person class.
She has nice hair, for starters. She has a voice that carries throughout the room. Don't need to use textbook much, all about the lectures. Also, she is a dime.
one of the best professors i've ever had, and one of the most interesting women i've ever encountered. her class is tough, but study hard and go to office hours/review sessions and you'll get a B, at the very least. take her up on her offer to flunch, she's a fascinating woman with some real life advice to share.
She can illustrate everything very clearly, and point out everything that will be on exam again and again. She is very dedicated to her work. The review sessions are always full of applause. You can really learn a lot from this class, and it's not hard.
Professor Leachman really knows her stuff and truly wants you to know it, too. Don't be turned away by her somewhat condescending attitude and sense of humor. If you express interest and put in some work, she will definitely be there to help you. The book is next to useless. Most material on the tests comes straight out of lecture.
If you don't do well in her class, it's your own fault. Leachman is incredibly clear and explicit about exactly what she wants on tests. She even spends class time reviewing to make sure that you understand things. Her liberal bias is noticeable but not important. You will get the grade that you deserve in this class. Fight for every point.
great class. it really helps you gain a better understanding of the world, especially in relation to current events. make sure you keep up with the news. getting extra credit points on the test really helps out your grade. it's definitely a doable class. just keep up with it.
Her class itself is easy but the exams are tough. You really need to know what you're doing.
Dr. Leachman is the best teacher that I have had so far at Duke. She is very clear when explaining her lesson, plans enough time for the questions, and is very organized. She spends the beginning of each class going over what was covered in the last class, and the rest teaching new material. Classes are recorded online and tests are very easy.
Great teacher, but tests are pretty challenging and require a higher level of thinking than the examples done in class. If you put in the work, you'll get at least a B- (what I got). Go to office hours, do the hw and extra credit, and learn the lecture material inside out, and you'll be just fine. Also, flunch with her because she is awesome!
The class material wasn't hard (though there are some tricky bits) and the tests range from easy to ridiculous. Go to class if you can, because sometimes just looking at the recordings/lecture notes might be hard to follow. Keep up with the work and you will get the grade you deserve.
Very high demands for a professor who has the math and spelling abilities of a 10-year-old
if you want to pursue econ, stop reading these ratings and just take the class. it's a difficult class, but very worthwhile and i got an A even though i'm not an econ person. she's an amazing person, so go to dinner wither! do the extra credit, WATCH THE ONLINE LECTURES, put in the work, and you'll be fine. don't bother opening the textbook.
To get a good grade you basically have to memorize everything she says. The tests aren't necessarily too difficult, they are just very detailed. The fact that the free responses all involve regurgitating patterns from her examples shifts the focus from understanding the material.
This is a very difficult class, but certainly not impossible. Her tests are hard, but fair. Know her lectures, like memorize them. Don't worry about the book. Stay on top of things, go to TA hours, and do the extra credit. I didn't get the grade I wanted but that was due to my study habits. LECTURES LECTURES LECTURES!
This is a class where you need to stay on top of the work. Memorize everything on the slides (yes, everything). The first part of the test is about 60 points or of spitting back information you memorized from the slides. Manageable if you do this, but if you don't you will get destroyed. Case in point I didn't figure this out until midterm 2.
Overall a rather terrible professor. The tests reflect your ability to understand her strange mentality and logic over economic principals and theory. She strongly pushes her opinions as fact and is unhelpful and often flat out rude to students who seek her help. (Her handwriting in the notes is also illegible)
Leachman is an unfair teacher who makes an otherwise interesting and easy subject miserable.
Oh Lori. Memorize her lectures to do well on the exams. I wish I had gone to her office hours more often because she actually was helpful. She's a pretty interesting person, don't be intimidated by her. Also, she does NOT curve at all. Overall it was a decent class, not easy but not too difficult either.
This class is hard. Don't buy the textbook. You will never use it. Lori seems like a cool person but is not great as a teacher because there is no curve and tests are hard to prepare for.
lecture is very conceptual/broad, but her exams are very specific, never uses the textbook, not worth buying, illegible handwriting on her lecture notes
Don't bother buying the textbook for this class if you are taking it with her but I would recommend taking it with a different professor. She teaches well if you have already taking AP Econ, but otherwise a lot of studying is required. I recommend taking it with another professor. She is very blunt and doesn't care what people think about her.
Leachman creates an environment in the class that makes it difficult to learn. She is disrespectful to students. Her lectures are boring, and her handwriting is unclear. She never uses the textbook, and the only way to do well on tests is memorize her notes. Class isn't curved.
Avoid if you are not planning to be an ECON major. She is a terrible lecturer but its passable if you study hard for the tests and have a balanced schedule with this as a class. (Avoid the rattail)
Her lectures are lengthy but helpful and she's pretty clear although her handwriting is basically illegible. Be prepared for lots of work and also don't miss lectures! They are extremely important. She is definitely not that kind of amazingly nice professor and apparently doesn't care about what others think of her. Can be intimidating.
Her lectures are not clear, and her answers to students' questions are not helpful. She will often contradict herself from one lecture to another. Her exam questions are vague and harshly graded. Gives office hours, but she communicates terribly with the TAs so they are of little help. You will probably end up teaching yourself. Take elsewhere!!!
She's rough. Tests are stupid hard when the material isn't that tough. However, she does present the material clearly in lecture, although she does do it too quickly and expects you to pick it up like it's nothing. I recommend taking it with the other teacher. That being said, it's not the end of the world if you take it with her.
Professor Leachman is one of the least nice people I have ever met, and carries a clear bias in her teaching. Tests have seemingly easy questions that are graded very harshly (taking of points without explanation). As much as I wanted to hate her, I have learned more taking this class than I have in any other class, it's truly amazing.
This is a hard class intended to weed out the people that aren't willing to work hard. The econ curriculum only gets more difficult from here. Lori is a great professor that really cares about her students. Even if you want to hate her because you're failing the tests, it's impossible. Go to her office hours, she will help you prepare for the tests
At first Leachman is definitely intimidating, but if you put in the effort and show up to office hours to ask meaningful questions she will like you. This class was definitely tough, but I learned so so so much. My biggest complaint about this class is the test grading. I swear that the people who do really well are able to read Leachman's mind.
Professor Leachman, although portrayed by many as being really hard, is in actuality a great professor that really cares about her students. She is always available after class for questions and provides really good help before exams if you look for it. Tough class but enjoyable.
She is one of the most supporting teachers I have ever had. She makes an effort to get to know all her students, but get ready to study your ass off. The class is not curved, so the natural econ students get an A. Those who are not are screwed. Besides the difficult grading scale, it is an amazing class and highly advise taking it.
Professor Leachman knows her stuff and is very invested in teaching the students who want to learn. If you put in the time to go to class and office hours, she will put in the time to help you understand the material. She was always willing to stop for questions and paused class after difficult material to ensure everyone was following her.
Most people go into her class expecting to be coddled and prodded along during the process of learning economics. But this is not the case and you will have to work hard. However, should you put in the effort you will be rewarded immensely. Highly caring and intelligent professor who rewards hard work.
Very thorough, invested in your learning, you should go to lectures and pay attention to do well.
Prof Lori is smart, but that does not mean she is a good teacher. She is often intimidating and sometimes disrespectful to students -- not a sustainable learning environment. Her grading is ambiguous and seems unfair. The material is hard, but her teaching style makes it harder. Take it elsewhere.
I really enjoyed this class. If you're thinking about taking Econ101- don't be deterred by the previous comments. There is a direct correlation between how hard you work and how you do in the class. Professor Leachman isn't easily approachable, but if you get over that and go to her office hours you'll get a lot out of them. Midterms are manageable
All content is learned in lecture and there is no textbook to go by so it difficult to see information except in specific scenarios. Exams are difficult and MC has more than one right answer. Definitely a weed out class, AP Micro/Macro HIGHLY recommended. Expects participation in lectures but is sometimes dismissive of students
Professor Leachman moves through material quickly and covers a lot of ground. You definitely get exposure to a lot of different topics. Exams are long, but a fair representation of the material covered, and she provides many opportunities beforehand to get you prepared. She can be gruff with students in lecture, but is generally approachable.
If you ask questions during or after lectures, email her questions, go to office hours, do extra credit, and all quizzes and homework assignments, Dr. Leachman will do her best to help you pass the class (S/U). Once you get to know her, talking and learning about economics becomes very fascinating. Tests are very difficult and harsh grading.
Econ 101 was never meant to be a walk in the park, hence why it's S/U. And while Prof. Leachman definitely doesn't hold your hand the whole way through, she explains things clearly, answers questions well, and really cares that you understand the material. Go to office hours. Exams are challenging but are a fair representation of a difficult class.
Lori is a real econ genius. She knows the answer to every question and will expand your knowledge about the practicality of economics. I learned so much about not just econ theory but also its applicability to the real world in Econ 101. She's tough and not particularly kind during lectures but she clearly cares about students and is nicer 1 on 1
Tough and can seem a little mean on the surface. But she's great at answering questions and will definitely help you a lot.
Absolutely don't take 101 with Leachman if you are taking *any* other classes. No one has the time to live up to her extremely unreasonable exam expectations and you should expect to routinely fail exams if you don't sell your soul to her office hours. If you're willing to do that, go for it. Take it with Fullenkamp.
If you want a class with a condescending professor who definitely shouldn't have received a professor role at a university, then go ahead. She has the most convoluted lectures, completely illegible notes, and doesn't even answer questions well in her office hours -- she just makes you feel like you're the incompetent one, not her.
The class average for the first exam was a fail. That pretty much tells you all you need to know about how competent Leachman is.
Take econ 101 in the fall, she is awful. Teaches poorly and is very condescending/passive-aggressive to students
Assigned work and quiz on our wellness days. Speaks volumes about the type of prof she is. Very difficult to talk to and incredibly rude to students. DO NOT TAKE IF POSSIBLE.
This is the worst professor in Duke's econ department. She is rude, humiliates students, then yells at us when we do not attend discussion. She is not qualified, cannot answer questions, is very sexist against men and makes terrible, useless unreadable notes +lectures that barely connect. Shame on Duke for hiring her/letting here teach. FIRE HER.
If you value your sanity, don't take this class.
As far as teaching goes she's alright, obviously knows a lot about economics, and can verbalize concepts well. But the tests she makes are so damn hard, and so damn specific. Also, she's just plain rude to students who asks questions and creates a pretty hostile classroom environment. Whatever you do, stay away from Leachman for 101.
Extremely difficult course. Requires an unreasonable amount of time outside of the course just to barely pass SOME assignments. Tests are way difficult and although leachman is very intelligent, she's very passive aggressive and expects who to have some basis knowledge. Not for students with limited econ experience despite a 101 course.
As an Econ major, I was excited to take this class, especially with how prestigious Duke Economics is. Turns out a department is only as strong as their weakest link - Dr. Leachman is that link.
lol person who spammed this page below is definitely a freshman that just copped their first C in college. Lori is a decent prof that wants her students to get a solid understanding of econ principles and how the world works. While her tests are pretty hard if you put in the work you'll pass.
Lori Leachman is an rude professor who gets off on bullying students. She gaslights students on mass emails to embarrass them. Handwriting - menacing. Tests - sacrilegiously long for one hour and her grading is ridiculous. She had a mix up with the custodian about opening a test area and went on a swearing rampage -in front of students. Dont take.
I get previous ratings' frustrations with Leachman, but honestly she's not terrible. She's definitely knowledgable but she expects a lot. Just because this is a pass fail class doesn't mean it should be a cakewalk and I respect the fact that she made us work for the pass. This class was hard, but I learned a lot because of it. Would take again tbh.
leachman is just old school and expects kids to take her class seriously. as long as you don't take the course lightly bc its a 101 and you 1) pay very close attention to her vernacular in lecture and repeat that on exams and 2) know what info won't be on the exam you'll be alright. i learned a lot of econ & how to study.
Lori Leachman acting as punitive as she is with her students is pretty wild given the documented indiscretions of her prog3ny who also attended Duke. Consequences for thee but not for me hij0.
Lori's class is a mixed bag - she can be tough, but engaging with her system pays off. unstuck study and reviewing the textbook helped me stay on top of things. Not the easiest, but worth it for the knowledge gained.
