No unnecessary dates or event to memorize unless she said so.
She makes boring old history funny! When Albert Burr got shot, she said he was probably laying there thinking, "I can't believe he shot me". I have taken her twice, reccomend her and hope to take her again. Besides, she's so darn cute.
Agree, she emphasizes only the dates and things important. Easy tests and enjoyable class.

she kept me awake at 8am...that should tell you something! she is a great teacher.

GREAT TEACHER. Makes everything very easy to understand. If you plan to take a history class, take her.
One of the best professors I have had, if not the best. I really enjoyed her class. She makes everything interesting.
Easily the best American History professor in the History Department. Tests can be a little tricky, but if you read both books and at least go over your notes, you should be fine. Highly recommend for anybody to take for history requirments. I'm also taking hist 201 under her next semester.
She's incredibly enthralling to listen to, except when she tells some of her particularly inappropriate and sometimes childish personal stories. If you don't mind that, I highly recommend her. She can keep you interested even if you don't care about history in the least. She's also very helpful.
Hard to fall asleep in this class, b/c she is so exciting. Hard tests. Make sure you read both books, and study the maps a lot before the tests, and you will do well.
I love this woman!!! Before her class I could not stand History but she changed my views. She is an amazing story teller and just a cool lady. One word of advice read both of the books, my grade went up drastically when I started reading. I would recommend her to anyone who has to take History 202
Awesome Instructor! Very interesting. Would recommend to everyone!
she is the best!!! very nice n upbeat! made history fun! i would recommend her to everyone! tests are tricky read both books n maps! otherwise u will do great if u take notes! shes was awesome! cant say enough abt her!
THE BEST TEACHER AT SOUTHEASTERN. YOU HAVE FUN WHILE YOU LEARN (AND YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW YOU ARE LEARNING). HIGHLY RECOMEND TAKING HER!
great teacher! very interesting and easy to pay attention to. Her tests are easy if you take good notes and read over them once a day.
One of the best teachers I've ever had. I wish I could take another one of her classes, but I don't need anymore.
Awsome teacher. I hate History, but she found a way to keep me intrested. Her test are difficult, but if you scan through the book, read your articles, and take good notes, you should do fine.
Makes class less boring, especially in the morning.
She is easy to talk too. I would recommend her!
kind of interesting
Her lectures are soo interesting. I have never really liked history that much but she made it fun. It's almost like she is telling a story. Her test are very straight-forward. If you go to class and take notes and study you'll for sure get a B. She does put questions from the book so if you want to make an A read the book. I made an A.
AWESOME teacher. she is so interesting. she smiles and laughs through the whole class. she made boring history interesting. I recommend her. she is one of the best teachers a SLU

She is a good teacher. Her test are hard if you dont at least skim the text and articles. Making flashcards helps a lot. She does give extra credit (10 points) so that's awesome. Other than that she is really nice and easy to talk to.
She talks the whole class and you have to decide what is imp and what to write down. Her test are hard and really hard to read bc she literally cuts out questions from old tests and paste in on the new one. The maps are impossible. i wouldnt take her again.
she made the class very interesting by the way that she taught but only three or four question would be from the lecture....she made sure that you read from both of the book required for the class
I cant stand this woman. She is unorganized in her lectures and thinks she is hot stuff. I love history, but not with this teacher. Get all the bonus points you can, because her tests are not clear. She makes you read the textbook and the reader. She gives us certain dates "you have to know" but then they never appear on the tests. Dont take her.
I dropped her class. She is unorganized with notes and tests. She requires you to read the book and reader. Test questions come from book, reader, and in class films. Her tests we're very difficult. I'll take Burns next time.
Fun teacher, but requires a lot of work. This is not a lecture class that you can just sit through and hear the information and then expect to pass. She requires you to do a lot of reading but it doesnt count for that much on the test. If you are interested in history, then have fun, but you will definately have to work.
This teacher was very entergetic. She was also really hard. She left in the middle of the semester. I have a new teacher now.
She is a great teacher. But her tests are kinda hard. She left in the middle of the semester, because of medical problems. She uses the book WAY too much.
i took her online history class and wouldn't reccomend it to anyone it was extremely hard. i was lucky to pass with a C. shes very nice in person though.
Ms. Ulfers was very helpful outside of class, and she was always willing to help. Her test were only hard if you didn't study for them, and that's the bottom line. She always came to class in good spirits and energetic to teach. Unfortunately, she left midway due to medical issues. I wish her the best of luck!
I took the online class which was okay I guess. I wouldn't recommend taking her online unless you are pretty well versed in internet courses. I met her for the final, and she is an okay person!
she was a really great teacher. she made the class so interesting. her test were fairly easy if you studied a little bit. she makes history fun.
Did'nt really care for her talked too loud too fast class was boring multiple choice test were hard if you did'nt studt I got a D Don't recommend her take Nishaus
She means what she says--the tests are straight forward 80% from the lecture and 20% from the readings or chapter, if you have trouble taking good notes don't take this class your notes need to be what she said the first test I read the chapter and took good notes and made a 92 the other two tests I didn't read for just took good notes & I got A's
She taught me so much about history that has helped me through my other History courses.
She is very energetic about the class but history is boring so... If you go to class everyday you have a definite C. Test come a little more than half from lecture and the rest from readings that she never discuss in class. So a test of 50 questions about 15 came from the reader.
She is too wild to be a teacher. She talks very fast about the notes, then talks super slow about a story. Test are very difficult, totally different from notes, and did not find her to be helpful out of class. I would not recommend her AT ALL!!
test were horribly hard!! HAVE TO READ!! she speaks VERY fast!!...
She is A Great Teacher!!!! Her Lectures keep you very interested in the material!
if you plan to take ms ostarly-ulfers, make sure your read the text and take notes...it will make the biggest impact on ur grade! she is an awesome lecturer who actually makes history seems somewhat interesting.
great teachet. The class was haed but she is a very good teacher
Great teacher and very fun! But her tests are difficult and those are the only grades she takes.
She is very nice, but that doesn't help you get an A. Her lectures are good, but her tests are hard. You have to study and read the book and the reader. There is a possibility of 10 bonus points, and they were needed. I found that most of the questions came from the book. Make sure you know people, and orders of events.
Great teacher! Her lectures are wonderful. She makes it very interesting. I've always hated history, but I loved her class. There's a lot of bonus opportunities. The tests are easy as long as you take good notes and read the chapter. I would definitely recommend her to everyone!
I love this teacher, she is the best history teacher ever. There are 4 tests, very easy, straight from the lecture notes, and some questions from the text.. Just study and attend class and you will have an "A. She also gives extra credit.
Great!!!!! The class is hard but do whatever you can to get her. She is awesome! Makes History so interesting because she teels it like a story and does not even look at a book. Very easy going and laid back. VERY easy to look at.
Her lectures are very interesting and she relates it to what's going on now. She requires ALOT of reading. She would say "this is going to be on the test" and what she said wouldn't be anywhere on the test. I had to drop her class b/c I couldn't do well on her test.
I took her class and at first I figured she would be a great teacher. She got really into her lectures and made you feel like you were there when it happened. However, her test were so hard. I did excellent in High School History. I made a 48 on the first test so on the second test I studied for two weeks and read my book and the reader twice. I ma
her lectures are really intersting! She is so up beat and you can tell she loves history!! the test are kind of hard, its mostly lecture and you read usually one chap. in the book per test! and there is 2 opportunities for bonus! i would reccomned her if you dont mind notes and reading! she really made history fun!
Very helpful, although the lectures themselves were very dry, she livened it up a bit with various commentary and gossip. Tests were multiple choice, with a bonus of five points on every test.
I'll start by saying I hate history, and after her class...I still do. She teachs very well and trys to make it intereting though. Tests are okay if you study and read the readings. I would say class is mandatory but there were a lot of times where she wasn't even there. If you take her class be ready to do a lot of reading and note taking.
I thought she was pretty easy to be honest. She is also an interesting lecturer.
She was never on time, and hardly there on test days. She blew through her outlines in class and didnt give any clues to important points. She brought her sick child to class more than once. Her tests are rediculous. There is no pattern, you have to have an intimate knowledge of all the things covered. 4 tests build your average in her class.NO
She was very enthusatic about what she is teaching.. seems like a really good person..2 chances for bonus..4 tests..she tells her lectures in story form which is a PLUS if you dont care for history..who cares if she was late for class or canceled it a few times? less work we have to do! i would recommend her!
She is very nice to talk to. She is not very interesting because she constantly gets off topic of stupid stuff. Her tests are nothing of what she lectures, I spent hours studying and made a 50 on the test. You have to take a lot of notes in order to know what she is saying.
I think she is one of the best teachers I've ever had. She makes history seem so exciting and she tells it like its a story. She doesn't read off of her notes so you can tell she really knows what she is talking about. She usually puts her notes on blackboard. Her test are tricky and I'm unsure on alot of the answers but I always get an A on them
She is very passionate about the subject. Tends to show up to class late sometimes. Offers bonus points. The tests are straight forward, but read the passages in the book!
She is always late to class, never lets us know ahead of time she will not go to class, and then we are almost done with the semester and have only had 1 test. Lady needs to get it together. Great teacher when she decides to actually GO TO CLASS! Dont take her if you want a good grade, take her if you dont care about learning.
She is a very nice person, let me be clear about that. When it comes to her teaching, she SUCKS on so many levels. We got so many e-mails about her not coming to class along with lame-duck excuses. It seems as though she needs to take off from teaching for a bit, and get her life together. WHEN SHE IS in class, she brings her kids. DON'T TAKE!
One of the best teachers ever.
HATE HER! terrible teacher. test never reflect lectures and she always misses class!
Her lectures are good but long & she likes to make a lot of jokes. Make sure to take lots of notes and READ THE TEXT & ARTICLES for tests! She allows 10 bonus pts. and all you have to do is sign your name down saying you went to a lecture (supper easy). If you need help you can go to her office and she'll quiz you for the upcoming exam.
Great woman. I just showed for class. Did notes. Never studied until 2 nights before. And is really easy if you pay attention. She loves telling stories in detail.
Her lectures were so funny! She made historical figures seem like real people and made fun of them. She puts questions from the texts in the test, so watch out for that, but otherwise, I had fun.
She is very easy. Take her class, print out her notes from blackboard and high light everything that she says from the notes and study it. Also read the chapters because some questions come from it. Very easy class. It is possible to fail, but only if you don't study at all and miss class all the time.
Enjoyed her lectures! Never was one to like history but she changed that! Will take her again!
She'll help you personally by making quizzes just for you. Her tests are pretty tough though. Listen to her lectures, dont depend on the notes only.
The class was okay. Get the notes off black board & study what she says in lectures. You also have to read the books b/c they'll be questions on the test. The only thing I didn't like was that the only grades we had were test grades & 10 bonus points. She definitely knows what shes talking about! You just have to study hard & you'll do fine.
She is a nice person. But she uses notes from a former student. Her test her REALLY hard. She missed alot of days. And we missed 1 week of school because she had things to do.
LOVED HER! She actually inspired me to change my major to Edu 4 - 8 so I can teach history. She offers help outside of class and is always very willing to answer any questions you have! She will literally read you questions off of the test if you go see her during her office hours. Her tests are challenging but if you pay attention youll do great!
She's my favorite. Her lectures reflect the tests and she is so willing to give extra help. The class is easy if you try. Your grade reflects your effort.
She is very passionate about teaching history. Though she rants on a little about her personal stuff, it feels refreshing compared to other history professors who are boring. However, you need to put some effort into listening in class and reading the textbooks. The test scores show the effort you put into the class. Easy Extra credit every test.
While her class was hard, because the material was hard; she was a great teacher. VERY helpful, and wants to see you succeed. She will quiz anyone in her office or on her time or just talk about the material with you. She even gave me her number in case I wanted to talk about the material more. HAVE TO STUDY FOR EXAMS THOUGH. or you WILL FAIL.
Extremely sweet and helpful. She has been through a lot and truly inspires me. Very willing to help. Offers 10pt bonus and bonus on test. Take her! She is my absolute favorite teacher on campus. Test are hard but if you study you'll be fine. Love her!
Mrs. Lori is an extremely interesting teacher. She is very descriptive and gives small and interesting details that many do not know, but she lets you know what will and will not be on the test before hand. She really wants to see all of her students succeed and will work with anyone who is interested in making a decent grade. Great teacher!!
I loved Mrs. Ulfers! She gives you the notes to print out and is so willing to give extra help! Her tests are a little difficult, but she gives a bonus opportunity on every test, as well as bonus points throught the semester! Even though it was a history class, it was not boring at all! TAKE HER :)
Do not take! Her test are hard as ever and nothing is worded so tht you cant understand what is being asked or clear of what the answer is. She tells you make sure to study tht because it will be on the test its not even on there!! not taking her ever again but the reviews were so good on her i did but they were all lies! You have been warned!
She gives you notes to print and they are not organized the best but she makes class interesting. Shes nice, funny, and always willing to help. You have to read the book. 5 bonus points opportunity on every test. I didn't like the set up of the class at first but ended up loving her. History is boring but she isn't.
Horrible, shows up 10 to 15 minutes late most every class then talks about absolutely nothing pertaining to the course. most of her lectures include little facts about history which she says "but you don't have to know that for the test". Gives you a study guide for each test with a word list consumed of words nowhere to be found on the test.
great teacher and class
I really enjoyed her as a person, but as a teacher not so much. I felt extremely confident about the information, made study guides, read the text book, and studied all the information she gave us BUT somehow it seemed as if none of the information I studied was on the test. Her tests are made to confuse you. Even if you study, you may fail.
Tests are hard. 4 tests only grades. gives extra credit 10 point and then some on every test. willing to help. attend class or you wont understand the test
Her class is easy if you show up, pay attention and write down everything she says (if it is not already in the notes). Her tests are not that hard but challenges you. She is the nicest professor ever. Always happy and smiling. Willing to do anything and everything to help you pass. I made an A because of all the bonus points.
DO NOT TAKE!!!! She does give notes and a word list and tells you what chapters to read, but NONE of the material is on the test! The questions are worded very difficult, and there are no words on the word list on the test. She talks about stuff during lectures that don't have anything to do with the information we are going over.
I loved professor Ostarly. She kept the lectures interesting and explained everything in a way you would easily remember. The course itself it very interesting and not hard to pass at all. She even provided her own notes and a bonus on each test so if you read those and come to class you will not have a hard time.I would definitley take her again.
TAKE HER . TAKE HER ONLINE. promise you will have an A. one weekly quiz but the answers are easy to find. Took her online for 2 classes and passed with 99% in BOTH. Take her for online to up your GPA.
She is awesome, but her class is a little difficult. If you go to class and take notes, it is passable. She does post the notes and word list online. Her test are very challenging but are passable. She makes history fun, and cares about her students. Even offers to quiz you in her office after class. Gives extra credit on every test.
Dr. Ulfers is understanding and seems to be caring but her class was extremely hard. Even with reading the text, attending class, taking notes, and listening to recordings of her lectures day after day..I struggled severely in her class. She was also very unorganized.
Go to class, take good notes & you'll pass.
DOOOO NOTTT TAKEEE HERR!!! Don't get me wrong she is a very nice person.. but not such agreat teacher! Exams are very hard, not based on what she talks in class. She goes out of topic veryyy often, you'll hear about her mom and daughter alotttt!
Love her! She literally brought all of us Oatmeal Creme Pies one morning... Good sense of humor. Tells history like a story that keeps you interested. If you actually pay attention to what she says, you'll pass her tests with an "A" or high "B". Be sure to read the assigned chapter and at least one of the readers (it's usually the extra credit).
I took her for the online class, and there were no assignments whatsoever. She grants you access to the online textbook, and you have a fifty question quiz once a week. The textbook doesn't really help you all that much, even if you take extensive notes. The material on the tests don't reflect what is in the book. She does respond quickly to emails
She is awesome. Very good at making lecture interesting. Tells you exactly what you need to know in order to do good on the test.
Mrs. Ostarly is very sweet but she is not a good teacher. She tends to go off topic a lot. She tells us that some things are not on the test but they end up being on the test. The class consists of four multiple choice tests, there is no other homework to make up for a bad grade. Good luck.
Her tests can be hard, but this is college. She is very considerate and accessible outside of class, so take advantage of that. Study ahead of time and take notes and you will do great! She is very nice and an awesome person! - Student athlete.
I took her online class and found it very easy to follow along with. She drops your 5 lowest grades which made this class that much easier. I didn't make anything lower than an A in this class. Take her online!!!!!
nice lady. lecture were not that bad but her test are hard , like if you don't know the test like the bad of your head and even if you do you wont make an A. I studied for hours and best grade was a C. Don't take if you want a a good GPA
She's a very caring teacher and she knows what she's talking about, but her tests are very difficult. i am a straight A student and made a D on the first two exams. i had to W. i'd recommend someone else.
Because of Professor Ulfers I love History! Her classes are energetic and fun to listen to. She likes to get the class involved in her lectures so that we are participating. Her tests can be a little difficult because of word differentiation, however, this is college and she wants her students to be better at critical thinking! She is amazing!
This was the type of class where you listen to the teacher talk and you take your own notes. She doesn't have any powerpoints, it's just straight notes and you take your own when she goes into detail. Class is mandatory because she goes over something new each class period. She is a good teacher, but just rambles off the subject sometimes.
Excellent story teller.
Took her online. Tells you to read the chapters in your textbook and gives no study guide. Test were very challenging, even having read the chapters. She did offer 1 extra credit assignment.
Best professor I have ever had so far in college! Posts detailed notes on Moodle so students can follow along in class during lectures. I've found it best to take additional notes in the margins. Super easy to get in touch with and very understanding. Tests are straight from the notes and requires light reading.
I took this class, and it was difficult to me, she gives details notes, and she lectures the information but when you get he test, only a few things that she lectures on and that you study will be on the test. I will not take her again because of this reason. She is a very nice instructor but her class is very difficult.
I have never taken a History class that is not straight forward. This professor is nice but her test are the test from another world, because they are not what she is lecturing about. She has been at South Eastern for 28 years so you can complain to the chair all you want they are not going to do anything about her lectures not matching her test.
Great professor, makes history interesting. Have to do a little bit of reading from the textbook but can still do well without reading. 10/10 recommend
Her lectures are very interesting and she offers easy bonus opportunities.
If you make a quizlet and study the information as its given to you, you will do well. She's very passionate and knowledgeable but its hard to take notes in class sometimes. Do the readings!!!
She has no power points. It's all just show up and listen to her talk and take notes. Just study and you'll do just fine. She has 3 Exams and 1 Final. The exams are 50 multiple choice questions and you have 1 short answer question. Super simple if you study.
She wasn't a terrible teacher, but for me she was extremely hard. All the class is is lecture and for the test she pulled from both textbooks as well as the lecture.
Amazing teacher! Really knows what she's talking about! Tests are somewhat hard but you just need to start studying a week in advance. Make sure to read the textbooks for tests because a lot of questions are pulled from the pages she says will be on test. Study & you'll do fine.
The teacher is amazing but her, Test are hard! She will give you the information on a study guide to follow her in lecture to take notes, and she tells you to read your book and anything that is more than a paragraph that is what you will need to study. But when you get the test, what you studied is not on the test! I would not take again.
The Professor is she is nice. But nice has nothing to do with her test! She lectures and gives all this information and when you get the tests, hardly anything you study is on the tests, when you ask her about it, she tells you 80% comes from her lecture which is not true. Needless to say I did not pass her class. I should have withdraw.
Its weird because shes a sweet person and had beyond amazing lectures that really told a story and had you understanding history well. The biggest flaw in her class is that the test are EXTREMELY HARD. Many students and I knew material she taught and put innotes well but could not make decent grades because the tests were almost foreign.
I took her for a single term course. It was well-structured and fast pace.
Love her class she makes it interesting BUT her test are on the harder side and there are only 4 test. Attendance is not necessary but might be lost if you dont attend
one word: boring!! she sits on top of her desk and lectures the entire time. does give extra credit if you attend lectures & bonus on tests. lost of material to study, but her tests are not that difficult. I made an A on a test when I fell asleep most of the classes. 3 exams and a final are the only grades. would avoid taking !!
I loved her. She communicated very clearly and was very entertaining, even in the boring parts. She really cared about her students and practically painted a picture of history with words. Attendance isn't technically mandatory for her but I promise you don't want to miss class.
She really cares about her students and makes the class entertaining. She got a 4 because her tests are difficult and the only grades you receive are from the 4 tests. Although attendance is not mandatory, I would go if you want a chance at passing. Overall, I would recommend her.
Loved her! She made History so interesting through her lectures that I took everything she taught. May go audit some classes just to sit through some of her lectures.
Absolutely great professor, I took this course in the Spring of 2019 and enjoyed every moment of her very insightful lectures. Knowing a little more about what they didnt teach you in high school can definitely open your eyes and get you thinking deeper. Highly recommend, just dont skip class and read what she gives you and youll pass easily.
Took her previously and decided to take her again, still just as interesting but with new material. You can tell she cares about history, her line of work, and the students even as this semester unfolded trying to adjust back to normal. Shes great to talk to outside of class and always has a good vibe, once again recommend her to anyone in history
She is a nice lady. She supplied notes and lectures to help with the test. I did not do as good as I wanted to because of other issues but she did a good job at teaching the information.
Test are really hard and she only grades four test. The notes are really long and you have to read at least 100 pages from the book every test.
She is a very nice person, but it's too hard for a history class. Not only are you just graded by 4 tests, but you also have to read these extremely long chapters just to answer 10 questions on the test. You don't even know what you're looking for. She's a nice person but good luck if you rely on quizzes to keep your grade good.
Overall, I really liked Ms. Lori! She was very sweet. However, the only thing she grades is four exams. There weren't many bonus opportunities outside that, however I still think she was a great teacher and I would recommend her to anyone who wants an easy A or B.
She is a really nice professor but not so great teaching wise. She provides notes but in class she said if you only read the notes you will still fail my test. I took notes, read her notes, and found a quizlet and still failed her test, the test is not the same as what she talks about. Your final grade in her class is your test nothing else
Mrs. Lori gets a bad wrap from a lot of incoming freshman, but honestly if you take good notes, come to class, and study for at least 15 minutes every night you will do well. She tells her lecture like a story which keeps me engaged in it and helps me make connections about what we are learning.
She only gives 4 test and that is the only grades she gives, her test are around 50 questions and are on lock down browser but no camera. She answers emails fast, but you need to listen to lectures and study looking the questions up on the test does not cut it
This class was super easy! There's no homework only exams. The exams were okay, they aren't really hard. She gives a word list and notes for you to look over!
She's honestly amazing and she's willing to gain relationships with her students. DONT UNDERESTIMATE HER TESTS. Her tests can be on the easier side if you're someone that's okay with studying a lot, but overall, the tests are pretty hard. If you study heavily you'll be fine. No assignments just 4 exams and she makes her lectures interesting.
This was my favorite professor the semester I had her. The lectures are very easy to follow, as she often gives the time frame when things are happening, however there are only around 4 dates you have to remember per test. As long as you understand every word on the word list she has for each test, you will be fine. I plan on taking her 202 class.
She is a great history professor. Going to her lectures are important because everything that is on the test is what she mentions in the lecture. She makes her lectures entertaining and she is really funny. The only thing about her that I did not really like is that she does not really answer emails.
Dr Ostarly is one of my all-time favorite professors at selu! She is amazing if you sit in the front and follow along, she talks fast though, so there's no room for distractions during class time. No homework or quizzes which could be seen as good and bad, but as long as you follow the study guides thoroughly using your notes she's an easy A.
Lori makes history engaging with entertaining lectures. The tests focus on what's covered in class, so attending is key. I found Unstuck AI useful for preparing alongside the textbook.
I would definitely recommend Ms. Lori! She is such an amazing professor. It is so impressive to me how she doesn't use notes or a powerpoint when she lectures. She teaches history as she's telling a story, and makes it interesting and engaging. She is always willing to help students, either during her office hours, or even on her own time. Love her
Mrs. Ostarly is a complete chatterbox, full of information yet most of it is unrelated to what students will be tested on. No PowerPoint usage, assigns reading chapters, yet info is only shown on exams, consistent in office hours (really helpful) but very unorganized. Love her as a person but wouldn't recommend as a professor.
Mrs. Ostarly is overall a good professor. However, her class is very lecture-heavy so it's important to attend her class and pay attention. She's very helpful and very nice. She's also funny and more laid back. Her lectures are easy to comprehend if you actively listen, but she does kind of jump around with no notes so its important to study too.
Do not take her online course unless you love reading 14 pages of notes watching 10 hours of videos and memorising 20+ terms for one test!!
Lori, as kind of a soul as she is, lectures in circles. We as a class literally never knew what was happening and somehow even when using the study guide she still would ramble off and we never knew what exactly would be on her tests. Her tests weren't hard, but things are made difficult when you have no idea what to study even WITH guidance.
