Expect to read a chapter a week at least. Tests are super hard. Always there to answer questions if you have them. She doesn't lecture over material but does more of examples/activities during lecture.
Very knowledgeable in her field of study. Teaches as if every student is a science major or knows everything about biology. Although her class is difficult she is there to help you, but you have to ask for help. Gives some extra credit but not enough to dramatically improve your grade. DO NOT SKIP LECTURE OR YOU WILL FAIL
The lab portion is treated like everyone is a science major and gets pretty in depth. Midterm and final are 150 questions/fill in the blank and no, there isn't any word bank to choose from. Good luck to anyone who takes zoology. She oversees most labs in science, so there's not much getting around her.
Terrible lecture just blabs on about nothing does not give you time to write down the notes, but also doesn't post slides to study on blackboard. So if you do not get it in class too bad. Is rude to students a student was talking to her asking about the exam the professor just blew her off started talking to someone else. Do not take her class
This class is awful. Do not take. You can find anything better. Long lectures that she goes through very quick and she is unclear. 12 quizzes, 4 tests. Almost Daily readings and reading summaries. No extra credit opportunities. Mandatory Attendance. A real stickler and no also no phones or laptops. Had it not been for lab I would have failed.
Expects students to read before class to be prepared for participation in class discussions and activities. Thinks everyone is capable of learning and contributing to the learning process.
This class is pretty interesting. You cover a lot of topics that are fun to learn about. She's pretty stingy on her rules and grading criteria, so make sure you do exactly what she says. There are three tests, lots of reading quizzes (most on Quizlet), group projects. Also, be sure to take notes during lecture. Your life depends on it.
I strongly dislike her.
You have a teacher assistant who gives the class. You do need the textbook to do your classwork and homework. There are quizzes at the beginning of the class based on what you read for homework. Most of it is group work except for the midterm and the final. The tests are all free response. Attendance is mandatory in order to pass the class.
Mrs. Rose is a pretty good professor but you will definitely have to work for your grade. You cant skip many classes because the material she covers in class is always on the exam. There is a decent amount of homework but nothing too absurd. Overall, hard class but a good professor.
I personally think her grading scales are ridiculous. For botany she is better because you just write in a notebook but for zoology like all short answer 150 questions for midterm and final. If you have a problem talk to your TA not her she does not care..... that is how I felt when I had a problem with something.
If you take her for lab you'll have a TA. They expect you to know what to do on the first day. TA wasn't very helpful and didn't explain anything. You basically have to figure it out on your own. Quizzes before and after lab. My advice is to look at your manual before lab. Hopefully you covered what you need to know in lecture, if not. Goodluck.
You're graded in groups so make sure everyone is participating. You have 2 quizzes each lab. You can't have your phones. If the TA catches you on it they will ask you to leave and your whole group will get a 0. Happened to someone in my class and she did not care that the other members didn't do anything. They all got a 0.
Lori doesnt do anything she just makes her TAs do everything and barely gives enough info to them to teach us. Group work is entirely required so you may get a bad group and she wont care.
Lori Rose is someone who, I strongly would not recommend. In her lab courses, she is a tough grader who expects you to know things above and beyond your control and things not even discussed. She thinks that assigning a group is how you learn, by teaching each other. She holds you over class for about 10 minutes and over explains everything
I've had difficulties in this lab. The quizzes are pretty ruthless if you don't study beforehand and make sure you do well on the group projects. The information isn't hard, but there is a lot to remember. The midterm beat up half my class because they didn't remember everything- and there was a lot to know.
Do NOT take her for lab. She does not give the TAs any information to go off of so my class was confused and did not know what was going on half the time, she's a tough grader, and the tests were ridiculous. It says on the syllabus that you need the book The A Game but in reality you don't need it. Anyways, take anyone else BUT HER.
If you can DO NOT take her. She does not give any description to the students or TAs about the assignments. She is not accessible at all and is no help. She rarely answered any questions from me or my peers and when she did, she would say how she could not help us. She does not care about the students at all and does nothing to help them.
The lab isn't actually taught by Rose, it's a TA that teaches the class, Rose just gives the lab work to do. I swear she doesn't think that us students have a life & job outside of class let alone other classes. This class was VERY time consuming. Decide you want to skip a lab? HA you will end up so lost and confused.
A TA teaches the class, so I have only met Rose one time, she seems sweet. Lab's are excessive but information pact. The work itself isn't too hard, but can be confusing. Do not skip labs or you will be lost!
She was the lab coordinator for botany and zoology. Her TA's were good and she would pop into lab to check in occasionally (good luck if ur ta is a grad student, they are always rude). She is very organized and straight forward. Adjusted to the pandemic well.
Literally the worst professor ever this is my second time taking a lab that she was over and the TA's are amazing but she expects way too much for one lab. LEAST UNDERSTANDING & CARING professor at Sam. I still got an A in the course (C in the lab) but she made my semester so much harder especially during a pandemic.
Absolutely miserable and stressful. Rose's classes are entirely run by TAs. You're lucky if you get a good one, mine was awful. Rose cannot be bothered for any reason. She is rude and completely unhelpful. She will not treat you with respect or be understanding. She will not answer questions or assist you in any way. Avoid her, she is a nightmare.
She is absolutely awful. The lab work is excessive and the post lab quizzes are nearly impossible to pass. The TA was also no help as she acted as if she did not want to be there. Several people in my class tried to get in contact with her but they got nothing but snarky responses and redirection to other people. Avoid her if you can.
This woman is borderline crazy. There are 2 quizzes every week, and her exams are outrageous. One of my classmates was unsure of how to complete one of the assignments, so she emailed her with some questions. Mrs. Rose emailed her back saying that she needs to figure it out on her own and that it's not her job to answer everyone's questions.
She doesn't do anything the Lab assistants do. Hope that you get a good TA. I had the luxury of not getting a good one and she did not help us at all. No emails sent back to me, no real answers for me in person. I emailed Lori she basically told me to leave and talk to my TA about it. Sadly she' the lead coordinator for freshman BIOL labs so yikes.
She puts full responsibility to the lab assistant and neither of them emailed me back about the one confusing paper they make you write. The class itself is pretty easy as long as you do the pre-labs.
I have never even seen this professor once. All she has done was send out emails acting like to does the teaching lol. She relies on her TA's to do everything. The class was extremely hard and was sooooo much work (and for what). I ended up dropping it so it wouldn't hurt my GPA.
Its sad, this woman is head of all labs. You will never be taught, only given papers and told to do them without lecture, its all up to you. Lori is VERY rude if you email directly to her. She doesnt care at all! If your looking to be in the Biology or science field, go to another school as she will never show her face. Waste of time and money.
Zuniga was her TA and she was as bad as her. Both Terrible people. Very careless and unnecessarily rude. Surprised she still has a job here. There both
I question if she even knew if she was the prof. of this class, the LA was the only person ever in lab and sending communicative emails. I never once saw or spoke with Prof. Rose. We took 3 quizzes per week over concepts completely unrelated to lab and lecture; if you had questions, good luck getting in contact with Prof. Rose. TERRIBLE PROFESSOR.
This professor is actually one of the most rude I've ever seen via e-mail. I think she just hates her students or hates teaching, either way she was rude for no real reason, and never appeared in class, used her TA to make up for her lack of any real teaching. Don't take her.
Mrs. Rose was the most discouraging and unmotivating professor I have ever had. She was EXTREMELY rude in her comments and never gave good feedback. She seems to not care about her students or their grades and she isn't afraid to show it. A lab is always stressful for me, but this lab made me want to pull my hair out. NEVER take her.
Worst. Lab. Ever. Take with someone else. Take with a TA. Simply don't take. 3-5 assignments every week for a SUPPLEMENTAL lab. Ridiculous. 44 graded assignments. 12 labs. 20-page labs. The instructor is rude and unhelpful. Open-ended quizzes. Almost no multiple choice. I learned 2 terms throughout the entire lab. Bc I was busy trying not to drown
I personally had a TA which was horrible, but the few interactions with Dr. Rose that I had she was so rude. For this class you defiantly have to read or you will be behind. There is a independent pre lab quiz, lab, then post lab quiz that you can do with your group members.
I only met Mrs. Rose once and she was friendly enough. This lab is often confusing but not really difficult. Make sure you have a lab manual and actually show up to lab! Participation and effort in lab are the main factors of passing.
Changed my major because this professor was useless. Avoid zoology majors at this school. Just look at her rating and avoid. With the cost of college rising, I expect more from my professors. She FAILED
As a LAB you will have TA. If you skip class, you will not pass. Read your lab manual beforehand (especially before the first class), take notes, and go to office hours. Not the easiest course, and not the hardest. The material for the LAB is completely different from a lecture course.
There are a couple projects that you have to do on your own time. One required to go outside and then write an experimental design and another required you to go in and water plants 3 times a week for 2 weeks. This course is all team work. You grade your team members but some cases you can be left picking up all their slack. Not very hard work tho
Probably the worst professor I have taken here. She's the lab coordinator for freshman so you're stuck with her. She never is actually in the labs so you're completely reliant on a TA. I had a decent TA who was helpful. BUY THE TEXTBOOK and READ IT. Prelabs- study the textbook. Postlabs- in class PowerPoints. Midterm and Final is a project- DO IT.
Lori Rose was never in class. She assigns a TA to teach the class. The TA I had was amazing she graded easily and was able to work with you if you had any trouble. There will be readings assigned on PDfs for you to do the pre-lab quiz/assignments before or during class. There will be 1 experimental design midterm and 1 group-project research essay.
Your experience honestly depends on the TA you get, mine was horrible at the start but then Mrs. Rose started teaching our actual class & she is so sweet and a very mindful grader but you have to put in the work especially on the final research paper to pass. The TA's aren't always good though but she is! The labs get pretty repetitive but are easy
So never met the professor, but I did have a TA who was really awesome was the one who teaches. All the work (pre-lab, quizzes, and exams) are made by her but are graded by the TA. Work is usually done in groups and most of the information is straight forward from either the book or lab manual.
This professor is the most useless person that has ever walked the face of the planet. She can't be bothered to average the peer evaluation forms herself, so she makes the students do it, and deducts points if you do it incorrectly. Not only that, she is a total hag when it comes to her grades and her care is strictly for her paycheck. Disgusting.
You have no choice but to pick this woman as your lab instructor. She is not the actual lab instructor, she just creates everything you do and a TA teaches. There is always a PreQuiz(done alone), Group assignment, Post quiz(with group), and fill out peer evaluation sheets. Must read the textbook before class over the specific chapter for prequiz.
She's the lab coordinator but you'll never see her. You'll get a TA, some are helpful.. some are not. Prelab quizzes every lab on your own- first half are passable, second half not really. Postlab quizzes are as a group. Study the lab manual and textbook before lab. Midterm/final 120 questions each. 100% open ended/free response. Final is practical
My lab TA was amazing. Never saw Ms. Rose. Ms. Harris was great and she was very laid back. She explained everything very well and answered questions clearly. Study each lesson in the lab manual before each class, there are pre/post lab quizzes. Midterm and final is around 70 questions so study everything!! Passed with an 80 so good luck!
The lab was not difficult, but rather boring. Environmental science is an interesting subject but her labs are so dull. They cover subjects such as the water cycle, and pollination. She will make you go out of your way to make you photograph 10 insects participating in pollination as if it is easy to find anywhere.
Mrs. Rose does not teach the lab but a TA does. In my own experience, the communication between Mrs. Rose and her TAs is minimal, meaning most days my TA did not know jack about what we were supposed to be doing in class. If you get lucky and have a good TA that grades easy you will be good. Final is comprehensive.
Our lab section got stuck with an unintelligent and abusive TA and Rose only belittled anyone who tried to approach her about it. I have a 97 in the lecture, yet I'm pretty much failing the lab. Her lab has absolutely drained all my passion and love for biology. Please just take bio online at Lone Star or something, it's not worth it here.
You won't see Lori Rose. When our TA taught class, it was like it was the first time she was seeing the material, learning with us. We never had time to finish our work: pre-lab quizzes, the actual lab, and then post lab quizzes. Always in a rush, tests are hard, you can't even take the final unless you turn in a sheet of paper with notes.
She a very, very terrible professor and I recommend future Biology majors to get your biology course from anothet school, as this professor mangaes all freshman and sophmore Labs. Grading was inconsistent, teacher asistants were purposely biased and ignored the grading rubic for all items in Lab. I almost died from a stress induced heart attack.
You're with the TA the entire semester and will rarely see Ms.Rose. Your grade is all up to the TA, so pray that you get a decent one. Mine was rude, unhelpful, and made you feel dumb. Always got "idk" or "figure it out" as an answer. Took loads of students to email the department for them to see a problem. My group members made this lab tolerable.
Mrs. Rose is the lab coordinator, so you'll primarily be overseen by a TA (teaching instructor). Some of them I hear are very tough graders with high standards. The lab is not difficult at all, and neither is the lecture. Just be prepared--you will have actual work to do since this is a college course. Citations matter. This is science. Grow up.
I actually never saw Mrs. Rose once during the whole semester. I luckily had a pretty good lab TA so it made lab much better. You do have to come to lab prepared or else you will fail every pre-lab quiz.
The lab is harder than the lecture and is MISERABLE. It is for non-science majors, yet it is purposefully made to make you do poorly. The pre-lab quizzes are inaccurate compared to the manual, and when you point this out, Mrs. Rose will not care, and she can't comprehend emails. They need to find a new lab coordinator.
Mrs. Rose is the coordinator, not the actual professor teaching the lab. So get ready for a TA who's a little lost and probably learning the material along with you. There was an unnecessary amount of work, in and out of the lab, and the material often did not line up with the BIOL lecture so it felt like taking two seperate classes. Best of luck.
This is not a good lab. This lab section will eat more time out of your day than anything else you might be taking, and the overall course can be described as poorly designed, at best. Your TAs will not know the material, so don't bother asking questions. Google is your friend for this course, and I strongly advise focusing on this class.
There was a pre lab quiz every lab. we did more work then we needed to do. Lab took up more time than any other class. i was lucky to have an amazing TA who knew what they were doing but she just went off of what she was give. L.ori rose just runs the labs she doesn't actually teach them she just assigns A LOT of work. you will rarely see her.
The TA hired barely knew what was going on, and nothing was ever explained to anyone. Every students was always confused, and were failing almost all the pre lab quizzes. It's highly unorganized.
This class is awful. She manages 70 + labs and has TA's, so she is never there & hard to reach if needed. Hard pre- labs. Your grade is dependant on your group mates, so if you have horrible group mates, good luck passing!!
Ms. Rose didn't actually teach this class. It was led by a TA, so if you have a good TA, you'll be fine. The pre-lab assignments are more busy work than useful information, but just do the work and you'll be fine. Basically the entire lab is group work so its not crazy difficult.
Her BIOL 1406 labs are taught by TA's so you rarely see the professor. If you have a good TA the lab will be more manageable but if not it can be tough. There is a group project that count toward most of your grade and your participation in it is important so you should show up.
Mrs Rose is an great professor, her grading on rate my professor is not about her but about the TAs, she is clearly wants her students to succeed in her lab, the syllabus is clear in what she wants, sadly that some Tas do not explain that well. I had Mrs Rose as my TA in my lab and it was easy to understand I had an amazing semester.
Only saw her once all semester, and she just sat in the room next to us not even introducing herself. Instructions were never clear and caused everyone to ask the TA several questions, most of which they did not have the answer to. Some lowest grades get dropped, just try your best and cite your sources and you should be okay.
Your grade will depend on who you have for a TA, you will rarely see Ms. Rose. The TA I had was Samira Alam If you know she is the TA, DO NOT TAKE HER. She will not help when you ask questions, she speaks so softly, and she will not help with any microscope stuff or help with lab projects. She is terrible, do not take her if you can. I regret it
Unfortunately this professor is the only person running Biology 1407 labs, although her TA's are the ones that instruct the class. She believes her TA's do no wrong. If you ever have concerns about your grades, she will not listen to your claim and will automatically side with the TA. She does not care about the students, and is very strict.
Mrs. Rose is the coordinator of the labs, which are managed by TAs. The lab consists of two essays with two rough drafts, a weekly quiz, a practical, a weekly journal entry, peer evaluations, and a group research presentation. Although the lab involves a lot of work, it is done in groups, which makes it manageable.
Was apart of the LAB portion. GA was absoloutly horrible. LAB lacked any sort of structure. Had inconsistant information on assignments. Heard I don't know many times from the GA about things within the class.
TA is terrible. period.
If you can avoid taking Rose's lab, please do so. She is not understanding at all. So extremely condescending and will treat you like a five year old. Take another lab class. Any other professor would be more tolerable than Lori. She would not allow me to take the midterm exam because I was not wearing pants. (There is a STRICT dress code.)
I should've listened to the bad reviews before taking her. She does not care about how you do in this course. She is condescending and belittling. I genuinely believe it must be impossible to get an A in this class. If you are forced to take her, I wish you the best of luck!
This review is not about Lori, I literally saw her once. I don't think there are good TAs under Lori. I had Samira Alam and dreaded lab. I thought Alam was just strict, but as time went on I think she hates her job. She wanted to give my group a zero because we misunderstood her question and she did not want to explain anything. Accent is thick too
The begining of lab quizzes are extremely difficult and you aren't allowed to use notes. For the level of difficulty for the class there should be better TA's that can explain properly what we are supposed to do during labs and the course content. Also the amount of announcements she sends is over the top
Unprofessional and rude
Lori rose is terrible, she's extremely condescending and talks to her students as if they're elementary kids. I had problems with her unprofessional TA's and went to her seeking clarity and she completely invalidated everything I said and continued to back her TA's. BIO is already hard, Her and her TA's do nothing to support you.
Everyone claims she's a bad professor but she's one of the only options, so you have to pick her. She doesn't go to labs, so you get a TA. She grades the assignments and the TA does everything. I haven't had a bad experience but the course is fast and covers a lot each week in lab
The department head doesn't teach—TAs do, and none seem great. There are pre- and post-lab quizzes, requiring textbook reading. My TA rushed us and graded harshly. Miss Rose was unhelpful and condescending. I did well, but most struggled—wouldn't take it again.
The first two labs I took were fine. However, this past semester I ended up dropping. She documented me for academic dishonesty because of my citations. Not even that they were done incorrectly, but because they were in the wrong spot on the paper. Then she wouldn't let me appeal or give me a proper explanation.
Both teacher and TA are terrible, make things difficult on purpose for no reason and instead of helping they just get irritated. The TA makes it worse because all she does is act smart with you and gets surprised when no one understands or cares to understand. She makes it hard on everybody more than it has to and makes everyone's time difficult.
I had a terrible TA and could only understand 5% of what she said, so if you have Ms. Shiyanbade, be ready to read on your own. Professor Rose responded to my email a week after I sent it.
I mostly have to speak on the TA's for this though I realize the professor is who I'm really grading here. The amount of papers, assignments, and unrealistic expectations they put on us was absurd. They were VERY picky when grading our work. If you miss a class, be ready for like 5 zero's. There were too many assignments. She expects perfection.
This grade is for the professor as I actually never saw her. You're taught by your TA. My TA was great, Mr. Whitmire, theres just a TON of group work. You're actually graded individually AND as a group and do weekly peer evaluations. No "homework", but a ton of work to get done in almost 2 hour labs. Lab manual is what all assignments are from.
This class really depends on the TA you get. I never saw Rose once, and she was always passive-aggressive in her announcements. The mid-term sucks you will want to end it, finding 10 pollinators in spring semester was not for the weak. Also if your group sucked (like mine) you better start praying to a higher power. I've gotten closer to god.
I never saw my professor. I like science, especially labs, but my TA made me hate it. I do not recommend taking a lab on Friday's as it was given less advantages than other labs throughout the week. Work is strict to guidelines; you learn cool equipment but that's as much you'll get. If your TA or group members aren't good for you, change labs.
The TA was very passive-aggressive and graded very harshly, and I barely saw the professor, although she vanished and was replaced by another professor. This lab had sooo much work from pre-lab assignments to the notebook assignments during the lab, and some of the assignments were unclear at times. I don't recommend having the lab on a Monday
