very nice teacher, interesting class, want to come, all essay tests
Grades fair, take class to learn. Helpful when needed.

Great Teacher; gives you answers to all of her exams
Very fair and always willing to help, open door all the time, good with responding to emails. Also funny and charasmatic, gets to know students.
Awesome teacher! Be willing to work for grade. Her class is not easy, but she is very fair and will help you any way she can.
need to work hard but rewarded in the end, clear notes and clear with saying whats gonna be on the test. she cares about students
Great teacher, gives answers to her test ahead of time.
She's great! Must work hard for your grade but that's what it's all about right? When you earn your A you know you really worked for it. Take THOROUGH notes to make it easy on yourself. Go to class everyday!
Good teacher. Not very clear or helpfull. Class is not difficult. Group project at the end sucks.
Good class, would recommend.
One of the best teachers at state: she makes you challenge yourself. Easy in class participation points, interesting lectures (just take good notes), gives answers to tests, and is friendly. Take this teacher, but don't cheaT (AFTER ALL...it is an ethics class!
great lectures, useful stuff really. only critique is that she grades essay exams word for word. painstaking for those of us who dont memorize well.
A waste of time. She makes you learn a bunch of BS and useless theories that has absolutely NOTHING to do with the real world. If you want to learn ethics, take any class but this! There are other classes that teach REAL ethics and not a bunch of philosophical crap like this class does.
Yes, it is a sucky subject but some of us are required to take it. She is a good teacher. TAKE NOTES and MEMORIZE them. She gives a study guide for each of her tests, theres no suprises. A lot of the class is based on your participation. 1 easy presentation, midterms and the final.
Very helpful, gives study guides, no surprises on tests. Material is not as interesting as I would like it to be.
Very helpful instructor. Exams are difficult but study session during the class before exam. Some material interesting some not. Grade based on class average. Helps alot to take notes & attend all classes. Grade based on 3 exams, 1 group presentation, attendence, 3 surprise quizes
Dr. Ryan is a great professor with a friendly teaching style. She makes the class interesting and really knows what shes talking about. Likes class participation. Need to memorize answers from study guide for exams (short answer/essay). This class is an easy B for anyone and an easy A for those that can memorize lots of stuff.
Although there's a lot of boring theory in the classs, the group discussions are actually interesting and enjoyable. VERY nice woman. I went to class about 60% of the time and got an A. You do the math...
Not an easy class (boring) to attend, but easy exams. They are taken straight from the lectures, so take good notes. Grade is based on 2 midterms, 1 very easy group presentation, surprise quizzes, and final. She is very helpful if you go to her office or email. Recommend if you want an easy A.
Her and her husband both teach in the business dept. Both are good teachers, care, make you learn, and aren't that difficult. For you Finance majors try to get both of them if possible.
Teacher very enthusiastic and well informed. I found tests difficult, but class was definitely favorite out of 6, expected grade- A/A-, highly advise taking this teacher, my favorite at SDSU
she knows her stuff and is really helpful. Class is not easy though.. A lot of theory and you need to put in a lot of time. Out of all my classees this was definetly one of the hardest
Good professor. Essay exams however she goes over material in detail before exams.
Prof. Ryan is awesome! The course consists of alot of reading material. You will end up learning 6 Ethical Theories at the end of the semester. She goes over the readings to help you understand them better. Pop questions on some of the readings, 1 easy group pres., 2 midterms, and final. Put your time into it, study hard and you will get an A!
Dr. Ryan is a really great professor. She explains everything really well and makes everything easy to understand. Very approachable and willing to help. There are two midterms, the final, and a really easy group presentation. Tests are blue book, so be prepared to write a lot. And you only have to buy one book, which is only like 25-30 bucks.
She is a great Prof in every way. She's interesting, helpful, funny, and will make sure you walk out of the class with a decent grade. Her exams aren't bad just as long as you focus on every aspect of the Study guide. Great class interaction. I would reccomend her no doubt.
She is very helpful. The test are very hard because it is just a bunch of memorizing and then writing it in the blue book. I would take just make sure you study the study guide before the test
Great professor. Made a potentially boring subject interesting. You really learn a lot in her class.
Ryan is by far one of the best professors I have ever taken at state. She genuinely cares about each and every one of her students like they were her own! She is passionate about the subject and it shows. She expects a lot (2 midterms and 1 final all in bluebook - have to memorize a lot of info) but its worth it! SUCH an awesome teacher!
This class is suuuuper hard... probably the hardest i've ever taken... she's a really nice teacher and will help u... the tests are just really hard... 2 midterms, 1 final.. all essay form... not only does she grade on what u know but on how u write..i'm just glad its over...but if you're up for the challenge.. take her.
Very smart on the topic. Summarizes the tough readings for you. Good structure and fair grading. Thought it would be horrible, but loved it. She is witty also. Recommended if you can handle keeping up with the reading. 2 midterms (she passes out great study guides) and a final paper.
If you can memorize things word for word, then you will ACE this class. That is all that matters. Leave your opinions and thoughts at the door come test day, because it's her way or the highway. Regular class days are actually fun and not boring.
Interesting class. Tons of reading to do but she does a great job of summarizing it and leaving it up to the class to discuss it. Lot of philosophical terms. Grading was fair and she shows a genuine concern for the success of the class. Highly recommended.
She is a good teacher, learn a lot from her, but the tests were crazy. So much memorization involved (since the tests are all written in bluebooks) that the amount of info needed to memorize was wayyyy tooo much. If you want to learn a lot of info and understand it, take this class. Want an easy mgt356 class, do NOT take this class.
Teacher is interesting and the three hours go by quickly because of fun class discussion. Lots of reading. Exams are difficult bc they are straight memorization. Overall, Teacher = A-, Class = B
A really good teacher. If you go to class pay attention take notes you will do good on the tests. Just cram the night before and memorize everything and you'll get a good grade. Class is really fun and interesting if you participate in the discussions.
This class is very stupid. Just plain out memorization. If you're good at memorizing word for word, then this class is easy. She's going to give a 120 min final exam-of the 4 years I've been here-I have never had that. Her exams are nuts. Seems like she's an ethics freak- almost like an obssession.
Such a nice teacher! the first two exams are pretty easy they are essay and she gives you the prompt before hand everything comes directly from your notes verbatim. I haven't taken the final yet, but its harder cuz u hafta write a persuasive essay on ur fav. ethical theory. Overall, love the class/teacher, learned a lot! hopefully get an A!
1 ethical theory per week. Readings difficult at first, but she helps break them down in class. Participation and name card. 3 LONG blue book tests. Study guide provided. Memorize verbatim (she grades word for word). 20 min presentation. Helpful during office hours or via email.
Dr. Ryan is one of the best teachers at state. Her teaching style is meant to really make sure EVERYONE understands the material. Class participation is a must. Memorize for the tests. I wish she taught more classes!
I was scared at first but as time went by and i started to understand her well. She is great, knowledgeable and experienced, their is lot you can learn from her experience and in her lecture. I am a marketing major and never wanted to be anywhere near Corporate governance but after this class i am definitely inclined towards it.
The teacher is knowledgeable, she masters the material. However she is egocentric, judgmental, and a little in her own "Ethical world". If you don't like to read this is not your class. She will overload you with tons of material to read every week before class.
Lori Ryan is a very strict, stern, almost militaristic woman. She comes off as a bitter person who demands respect at the expense of alienating herself from her students who are petrified of her. The work in this class is fairly straightforward, but there is a LOT of reading and she grades extremely harshly. Makes many elitist comments. Do not take
Her tests are composed of short answer and essays. She is somewhat of a tough grader so you really have to know the material. She does pop quizzes on the homework readings so don't miss a class. I would recommend taking her class, she is very understanding and wants her students to do well.
I agree with the comment directly below. I tried reaching out to Dr Ryan on many occasions but she wasn't very helpful. As an ethics professor, I am disappointed in her lack of understanding and reasonableness for other people's situation, which is legitimate and made aware to her in advance. Otherwise class was interesting but lots of reading!
If you believe you may have to miss a class, it is important to know that no make ups are allowed even when giving advance notice for a justifiable reason. I had to miss two classes and was heavily penalized as reflected in my final grade. This aside, corporate governance was an interesting topic, and the guest speakers were great.
Difficult class but at the same time an easy class. Show up to EVERY class to take notes that are needed for the tests. Easy presentation and 3 pop writing assignments done in class. Gives a study guide so make sure you know everything on that word for word. I recommend writing out the essays and practicing them before the test to get an A.
Wow this class is a trip. Will probably be the most difficult class you take at State, but also the most fulfilling and interesting as well. Ryan may come across as a strict professor which she is, but she's also very caring and helpful as well. As for tests, the only thing I can say is start studying early and often and you'll do well.
Avoid taking Ethics with Prof. Ryan at all costs. There is over 200 pages of reading per week (and you can't skip any of it). She takes what should be a fun subject and drains the life out of it. Go with Sannwald and save yourself the misery.
Fairly strict Prof. You have to memorize everything word for word to get credit. Lots of reading each week, but this leads to good class discussions. I didn't learn anything about ethics in the work place which was disappointing because she only goes over philosophical ethics. Wouldn't recommend this class unless you like philosophy a lot.
Best professor I have had. Knows her stuff really well. Hard tests and an easy group presentation. Very clear on exactly what is gonna be on the test, you just need to study...a lot! Makes a boring subject extremely engaging
Very controlling down to tiny details, doesn't allow for bathroom breaks. Her tests are the hardest I've ever had - mostly essay with some fill in the blanks. She seems nice enough but she has so many rules that class is usually very stressful. You will work your ass off for a B.
Very hard professor but very enthusiastic. The class was interesting. Lots of memorization and she grades with a fine tooth comb. Take if u want a challenge. U really can't not participate, so go in eager. Impossible to slack your way thru this class. Can be scary, and loves confrontation, but also respects students who challenge her.
Professor Ryan really knows her stuff. I knew nothing about corporate governance before taking the course, but I find myself wanting to read about it even after the course ended. She makes the subject extremely interesting. Definitely the hardest course I have taken so far with lots of reading, but well worth it.
I knew nothing about corporate governance prior to taking her course and I feel like someone can ask me anything on the subject now. Her lectures are interesting and well organized. DO THE READING - it is interesting and necessary, not just for the quizzes. This is what I expected from an MBA course. You can tell she is very intelligent.
Let me first start by saying that Dr. Ryan is one of the BEST professors that I have ever taken. Yes there is lots of reading and yes, the tests are hard. BUT! She tells you EXACTLY what to study for the tests. Lots of memorization so give yourself at least 5 days to prep for tests. Also, class has a curve. TAKE HER and utilize her office hours!
This was one of my favorite classes in the MBA program so far! Lori brings in excellent speakers that make class discussions real, tangible and relatable. Read, come prepared and get involved in class discussions and you'll do fine. I highly recommend for all specializations. She challenged me to set my career goals higher. Great class!
Honestly exactly how a college course should be taught. Really wants you to learn! Even though the readings are tough (70s style) you actually learn and it helps you find out what you believe in and how you would like to live life. More than just an Ethics class, to me, it was also a class on life. Hands down one of the best professors at State!
Professor Ryan is a good professor and teaches well, however she doesn't care how much you learn, rather what you can memorize. All the tests involve her testing you on your ability to repeat back definitions and distinctions in her own words, word for word. Only take this class if you really love memorizing papers worth of information at a time.
100% objective review. Random pop quizzes that aren't difficult if you do the assigned reading. Gives you a clear study guide identical to exam but she doesn't use all of it 1of3 essay prompts will be chosen. No textbook. 1 easy group project finding a recent news article. All points pool together then curved so class avg is 2.7 gpa. You won't fail
I was waitlisted but never got into her class. I attended the first few weeks, I wish I had been able to stay in the class. Her class is heavy on discussions which analyze ethical dilemmas. She encourages you to think outside the box. I think she is one of the best for this course. If you get a chance to take her class, do it. you won't regret it.
This class tests you more on your ability to memorize than actually learning which is ridiculous because exams are based on writing in answers and essays. I did not learn anything from this except to not take her again for any other class she might teach. seriously, if other classes are waitlisted do not resort to her.
I took this professor during the coronavirus pandemic. She has her moments. Her teaching style can go from informative and kind to opinionated and rude. It all depends on what kind of day she is having. It really is unfortunate when professors can't keep a neutral thought on topics. Especially in an ethics class! That being said it was a okay class
Horrible Professor!!!! She is very rude outside of lectures. There are so many random grades given to the class. I would not recommend taking her. The class was okay but the professor could have been better.
Test based class (test are horrible) one group assi. They are all written/essay response based. You have to word the test exactly how she wants to hear it. Some questions ask for definitions and you have to give the definitions exactly how she said them in class on that day or you wont get credit. You cant access PowerPoint to study for the test.
Prof Ryan was the best! Camera is required to be on, but it helps with connecting to others in the class. I enjoyed the participation aspect of the course and was challenged with the class content in a good way. The only thing I didn't enjoy is that she would call people out for being off camera even if they were going to the restroom lol.
Test are free response/essay format. Answers have to be close to word for word from class lecture. Don't expect to just wing it on test. Study early and often. Group project is easy. Prof. Ryan expects a lot but she is fair and straight forward about her expectations. Fun and interesting class that makes you critically think.
Ryan was possibly my fav professor I've ever had at SDSU. She tells you on the 1st day that this class will be hard, but she makes her lectures engaging with relatable examples. Readings you have to read before each class bc they relate to the lecture and she'll give a few pop quizzes throughout the semester. 1 group project, pretty easy. Love her
She's not the most accessible outside of class--not responsive to emails except for the presentation. You prepare a current event issue in business and make a list of questions to ask the class. Her lectures are entertaining, she makes the necessary readings accessible online--but it is a LOT of reading. Essays are a big part of the exams. Pop quiz
Hated her and her class so much. Horrible personality and exams are hard. No homework for the most part but pop quizzes + just memorizing endless amounts of worthless information for exams made me miserable the entire semester. DO NOT take her for MGT 444
This is a really tough class and the tests are very hard so beware if you know you are not a great test taker. But overall Ryan is a decent prof. She has some quirks but so do all professors. She is strict on her rules but honestly its not that difficult to follow them,Going to class and paying some attention and taking notes will get you a long way
Avoid Ryan like the plague! Save yourself from the misery of being in her class by literally taking any other professor available. She will make your life a living hell. Be prepared for snarky, rude, and condescending comments all semester. No electronics. Oh, and don't even think about asking to use the restroom. She'll kick you out of class.
Although Professor Ryan is strict with her grading criteria, she GIVES you the questions that will show up on the exam a week in advance. If you are not the strongest writer, this class will be more difficult for you. However, if you put in a reasonable effort to memorize the content she asks for you will pass at the very least.
Lori Ryan is the worst prof ever. Get ready to memorize everything word for word and if you don't she will deduct you multiple points. NEVER take her class. Worst class and the worst teacher EVER!
Honestly one of the best professors. Her class is fair and if you show up and pay attention, you're fine. 2 exams earlier in the semester, (which is so nice to get done), 1 paper and presentation at the end- enjoyable if you pick a topic you like. She tells you the essay questions week before the test. Super doable, fun discussion based class.
Class was more interesting than I anticipated. Gave different ways of looking at ethics without being prescriptive about which you should follow. Good lectures that reinforced the reading.
guys. I never write ratings. but omg DONT LISTEN TO THE GOOD REVIEWS the TESTS are so tedious. like everyone said the tests are based on word for word definitions of what she mentioned briefly in class. too much info for a FREE RESPONSE TEST. so condecending and unpleasant when you ask questions after lecture or want to clarify anything.
please dont take her unless you want to actually make ur semester more miserable than it needs to be
Nit picky about everything. Makes you print 30 pages of articles to bring to class each week. You can't even use your laptop or go to the restroom cause she won't let you back in the classroom. This class tests you more on your ability to memorize than actually learning. Her style of teaching is obsolete and archaic and she flat out just sucks.
While I enjoy the discussions we have in class and the topics she teaches, she makes the class so unnecessarily miserable. Tests are VERY difficult and you'll lose points on the team project just for submitting articles that she doesn't approve of. She's nitpicky, won't let you use the restroom and come back to class. Please, do not take her.
She won't let you go to the bathroom or leave the class for any reason. For the exams you have to memorize everything word for word or you won't get credit. It's such a boring topic so having to study for literally 10 hours the day before just to memorize pointless material is really taxing on the mind. Toughest class at SDSU so far, good luck.
This is probably the most annoying teacher I have ever had in my whole life. On essays, she wants "bone words" which most of the time nobody knows what she wants. Even if you write 5 pages and clearly know what you are talking about she will give you ZERO points if the two or three bone words are not there. F this teacher
When I graduated I never got to review prof Ryan. To start, this was by far the hardest class I took at SDSU, finance being 2nd. Literal word for word answers... But while saying that, this class did help the most to be prepared once I graduated. If you just want the diploma don't take this, but if you're up for the challenge, its worth it imo
The worst professor I've ever had. She makes you memorize roughly 20 terms word for word and if you don't write it exactly how she wants you get points taken off. The other part of her test are the same if you don't explain it exactly how she wants it you will have plenty of points taken off. Prepare to spend hours on end studying for one exam.
If you want to spend countless hour studying for a class you will never use in your life then take this class. You will have to memorize probably 3 pages word for word worth of ethics theories and applications of them or points will be taken off. She will count off points even if she knows what you mean. TAKE ANY OTHER PROFESSOR!!!!!!!
Hardest class I've ever taken. There's a lot of detailed information covered in this class, and most of it appears on the exams. This professor wants detail, the exams are almost entirely essay based so study the essay questions and application questions the most (from the study guide). She's a good professor, but she is tough and expects a lot.
Took over winter session. Super reasonable workload. Quiz questions were based on the lectures, and class topics were interesting! Would recommend.
Please, take ANYTHING ELSE. This is the WORST class I've EVER taken. The tests are insane, you must memorize everything word for word. No electronics allowed, and you must pay to print 30+ articles. The study guide is useless since everything is short answer. You waste hours memorizing instead of learning. You up for the challenge? Think again.
These tests are unbelievable she would much rather you memorize her word for word answers as opposed to actually knowing the material. Super miserable class will yell at students if they attempt to use the bathroom during class time and makes them leave. Really just an uncomfortable person and seems to have little to no care.
Dr. Ryan's MGT 444 is authoritarian and exhausting. No bathroom breaks, surprise quizzes, zero feedback until finals. I spent more time here than in all other classes combined. After 36 emails in 2 days, she took no accountability, dismissed reason, and seemed to enjoy student struggle. Avoid—she's on a power trip.
