very patient with students, have any questions she'll help
Self Paced Math Classes
a nice nice person, helpful to students
No Comments
She is helpfull, but very unclear. Make sure she is not pregnant before u take the class...
never take her class again as you will learn nothing but study by your own.
She is really patient person and a good listener. Her grading is fair. Visit her office or go to math center to find her are part of the class.
never take her class or u'll find yrself very stupid becasue her test is lie the harest at foothill
Ms Silverman is pleasant enough, however she dose not communicate ideas effectivly in class. Her tests are relativly easy and i ended up with a b in the class, but I dont believe that i gained as much from her as I could have from another instructor.
The 1º complaint one can make against Silverman is that she is not familiar with the material. This is most evident in her ineptitude to answer any question not assigned in the homework (though still pertinent). She is also reluctant to admit mistakes.

man, do yourself a favor and just steer clear of this one, this site doesn't give me enough text space to tell you whats wrong with her. ps> shes on maternity leave, lets all send Mr. Silverman a thank you note for that one.
I like her very much. she's nice and very helpful if you really want to work hard. Her test is easy, too. However, her grading policy is a little bit strict. She'll minus a lot of point even you just made a small mistake.
Pleasant and personable teacher. You will do fine in the class as long as you keep reviewing class materials.
Picky about grammar/identification of variables. Tests are challenging but she will give partial credit as long as the process is correct. Easier grader if she likes you. Knows material, excellent memory (is aparent in names and numbers)Easy B, hard A.
She is not very familiar with the materials. Also, she is very poor in explaning things! She can make some difficult concepts more vague after a whole lesson of explanation!!!
she is cool, clear class, u will know wt she wants. she talks quite fast, might b difficult for intl' students.
I'm a 3.8 GPA intl' student. Trust me, never never never take her class!!!!! She doesn't even like her students. She always tries to put you down!
Her exams are alright, but she is indeed very unfriendly. She always talks in sarcasm, and DOES NOT like to help students out. She makes you look and feel stupid if you ask her a question in class.
She is really picky about your grammar!!! International students be aware!!!
Lori is an evil teacher
Horrible teacher-sarcasm is her middle name. Enjoys making you feel stupid and loves to talk down to students. AVOID this teacher!!!!!!!!!!

She is very nice and goes over problems step-by-step, but sometimes the class drags on and she is a bit boring. If you like a teacher to go fast in this subject, she's not your choice. She's also very helpful and willing to help you outside of class!
She is indeed a very unhappy person. She always talks in sarcasm, and discourage questions in lecture. Her tests and quizzes are okay. The lowest scores are dropped at the end. A bit picky on grammar in answering questions.
She is very helpful when you go to office hour. So use her office hour.
she is will to answer your questions in class and if she does not, she will finish answering your quesiton in her office
I got all B on the first three exams, however, she gave me C at the end of the quater, for me, she is sucks.
If you do your homework, you will do fine on her quizzes since they are just like the homework problems.
she is horrible at explaining how to do something she asks for opinion but then does nothing with it she is not to personal and acts like she is to good to be their.
I would have to say that she is the worse teacher I have ever had at foothill. She makes her class EXTREMELY boring, she talks about pointless junk, and she simply does not know how to teach. Avoid her, especially if math is not your best subject. I would love to get her fired so no one has to suffe
I am a math major and this teacher is the hardest. She is not very good at explaining and her midterms and really hard. Her finals are impossible. She doesn't care if almost all the class get an "F." Trust me!!! Don't ever take her class.
She is one of those teachers that likes to quiz you on the most difficult questions from the homework. I busted my ass and still failed miserably. When I retook the class with a different professor I got an A with almost no extra studying. Like others said she is also sarcastic and unfriendly.
very nice and approachable~~explains the lessons very well
bad, unhelpful, not intesrested in teaching
She is great. She explains clearly. One of my favorite professors. Statistics is easy with her. 3 exams (lowest replaced by final). 6 quizzes (drop 1). Exams are easy and no tricks. Recommended professor!!!
She's very hard, unhelpful, and bitter. This class was boring and annoying. Avoid at all costs.
she expects you to do all the work by your self, and she has a quiz every week, and if you fail in one quiz you can't pass the class. She is a very hard grader. Do NOT take the class with her at all.
You're quizzed every Thursday, plus you a online quiz almost everyday plus 3 EXAMS and a final! She's not very encouraging and doesn't explain things well, unless you're already good at Math reconsider another teacher! Although she will help you if u ask, especially during office hrs.
Excellent teacher. Highly dedicated and devoted to her profession...I find her very sexy. almost 90% of the questions on her exams are from the homework ! So study,do your homework, and stop whining.Easy A.

not easy but classes were enjoyable. she would stay after class to help people with homework
Silverman speaks English poorly. She doesn't explain things well at all. I have never been so annoyed at a professor - she exudes mediocrity. She is also one of those petty sticklers for stupid academic details like attendance and forced office visits. She'll take as many points from you as she can for things that have nothing to do with math.
Very rude, she makes you feel stupid for asking questions by laughing, or making a rude comment. Gets annoyed if you don't understand the material right away. Unflexable with office hours. i would never recomend her.
do urself a favor and don't take pre-calc with her. spends class time complaining how our homework isn't done her way, or how we aren't participating enough. doesn't clarify questions, instead makes u feel stupid. laughs for no reason. save urself the frustration, take someone else.
she reads out of a paper while lecturing, she needs a calculator for simple multipications, she is impatiant, never reviews what she teaches. she doesn't teach out of love for her profession but as a factory employee. if any A students wants a B they can feel free to attend her class.Just maintaining the motivation to listen to her requires skills
terrible. save yourself the time of dropping her after a week. Simply reads out of the book. Offers no instruction. Tons of Home work...collects it in groups- so if your partner skiped problems or didn't do it you get the bad grade. Class was a joke.
She is just horrible. Never take this teacher she will try to make you feel stupid when you ask questions and discourage you if you don't understand the concepts. She always says how easy it is. Thats easy to say when you Masters in Mathematics.
if you want to learn mathematics you can do it because everyone is able to do it!, but if you want someone else to teach you, i highly recommend almost every teacher from foothill BUT lori silverman!...terrible class....terrible teaching..
She's hard. But if you don't miss many classes and do ALL homework problems as assigned from the book and online you can get an "A" like I did. She is very cute and can't stop from sounding 'valley' sometimes. I was in love Ms. Silverman the whole quarter.
She is very helpful when you go to her office and ask for help. If you also do all the homework, then you can easily pass the class.
Ms. Silverman clearly explains the concepts and is very timely in returning the class materials such as homework, quizzes, and exams. She is willing to help students outside of class. Her exams are just like the homework so if you do your homework, the exams are a breeze.
Her exams are fair. If you do the homework, the exams are just like the homework. She is very willing to stay after class to explain and clarify the concepts or homework problems. She likes to do group activities in class. If you want an easy A, do not take her class but if you want to learn and success in the next math class, this is the class.
Her lectures are very helpful and if you pay attention, you learn a lot of things. She would gladly stop to repeat herself for confused students. Tests are fair and pretty difficult but she was able to let us correct and understand our mistakes to get back partial credit; she cares mainly for your understanding, not grade. The prof we need more of!
difficult to even pass her course if you are just average at math. if you take her, study REALLY hard and dont fall back. ask for help asap. exams are VERY difficult. final worth 50% of grade if you drop 1 of 2 midterms
Calc is a difficult subject but Lori does a great job teaching it! Quizzes & tests are challenging but very fair. Notes are an important study tool, so dont miss class! Bad reviews seem to be from bitter students who didnt pass, which ISNT her fault -- she makes EVERY effort to help ANY student that meets her halfway, so seek out help & youll pass!
No ability at all.
She is very helpful when you go her office. Even though she can be tough, it really helps out in the long run, especially if you plan to take the next course.
Very cute teacher and her lectures are very well organized and easy to follow. Homework can be hard but if you attend class, the notes helps a lot.
People who think that professor Silverman is hard are just lazy. If you do your homework assignments, the quizzes and exams are just like them.
Easiest Calculus teacher ever. She's hot too and very helpful with her explanation in class and during her office hours. I would definitely take her again
she is a very good teacher. she is always here to help her students. do not hesitate to ask questions in class or during her office hour. it's a lot of work, but if you do all the quizzes and all your homework, you can easily get an A.
I agree with all the comments about her helping her students. Very friendly instructor. The class is not easy but who ever said that calculus was easy.
Loved the class. No nonsense. Get in, get out, get on with your life.
Loved the class. No nonsense. Get in, get out, get on with your life.
Dr.Silverman is a great math professor, she is super nice and very helpful, I would strongly recomend students who want to build their math skill and get good grade to take her.
Difficult teacher. She doesn't teach all her homework in class.
Until I took math with Silverman I had nothing bad to say about any classes at foothill. She makes the class very difficult to pass, unless you're a genius at calculus. So unless you're looking to lower your GPA I do not recommend taking this course.
Teaches with the simplest way possible and doesn't cover everything that is tested/on the hw. Does not curve. Had a test in which no one finished in the given time. Decent person, just not the best teacher. Tests are straight from the hw though. Was somewhat interested in Calc before entering, but not so much with this teacher.
this teacher's quiz and test is easy. but final is hard
The ratings speak for themselves.
i dont understand all the bad comments. to me she was a stellar professor with very clear explanation. her quizzes are exactly from what she taught in class and the homework online. did not even have to use the textbook that much, her notes were sufficient. i missed my first mid term and got a B otherwise it's definitely an A for me.
I have never had a more clear, straightforward, and detailed math professor. I loved her class and actually began to enjoy math because of her. The only things that are helpful for a student to bring to this class are a positive attitude, good attention span, and willingness to do math work. All-in-all, she is an outgoing and confident teacher.
Her class might not be the greatest MATH 1A class in foothill but I found it just right for me. Reasonable amount of work and moderate tests.
Good! Nothing flashy. Just good clear lectures. You come to class, listen carefully, go home and do the homework, study for the tests and everything is just fine. Just what a math class should be. No singing, no dancing, no games, just a solid college class. If you want to learn this is the place. If you want fun and games go elsewhere.
I had Lori for the fall quarter and she's an excellent lecturer, but you really have to invest in 7-10 hours of studying (something I didn't do). I got docked points in my midterms and ended up dropping the class. Even though I didn't do well in her class, I have no regrets taking her! She really changed my study habits!
I really liked her as a teacher, but the class was very tedious. I slacked on the online HW and did poorly on the quizzes. There is NO charming her into a good grade. The final was 50% of your grade so it either helped you or completely failed you. Nice person, tough class. Just work harder than I did!
I took calculus in high school, so the class was already pretty easy for me. However her lectures seemed extremely confusing for people who have no prior calc experience. Quizzes taken directly from the homework. Moderate exams. She has a bit of an attitude too... Not the greatest, but not terrible either.
Very poor unclear horrible explanation. She neglects and does not help students. Students who self-teach themselves can only pass the class.
Don't let this class fool you, the quizzes are MUCH easier than the midterms. I attended class routinely and did well on all quizzes and homework however the midterms in this class does not follow the lecture or the quizzes. If you are good at teaching yourself then you will be okay, but if not I do not advise this professor.
I don't understand why so many people are writing negative comments about her. She is the greatest professor I have ever had. Take her class and you will never regret.
Gave the easiest quizzes ever based on very easy homework. Lectures really sucked. Midterms and Finals nothing like what we practiced for. Don't let your high grade in the beginning fool you, those midterms will drop you far and that final is 50%. In the spring quarter the class average was a 65% (cumulative grade). If your an ace, go for it.
The way she lectures and quizzes you makes you think that the class will be a breeze, but when it comes to the midterms and finals, she throws major curveballs. BEWARE of her exams and final. She is also unhelpful and a boring professor. I don't know why she is teaching.
she makes good class video
She expects you to know the chapter materials with her 5min-long videos. You have to have taken calculus before in order to even pass this class, and she barely lectures in class. Assigns online hw that you cant get help with. Never uses textbook. Wants you to write out in words all the steps for your answer. if u care about ur future dont tk her
A HUGE waste of students' time copying questions & graphs, NEATLY and anally writing out all steps, even obvious thought processes. 5 HW questions a week doesn't expose u to enough calculus! Then she throws curve balls and grades harshly on midterms. The fairness is out of balance, discourages instead of a motivating challenge.
She requires students to understand problems with the online videos, which I found quite hard if you haven't taken Calculus before. If you are good at self-teaching and a detailed person, go for it. She's very kind and eager on helping students, but you have to come and ask.
Her classes were discussion based. So she had us to watch short videos to complete pre-class paper. and apparently she expected students to understand the materials before the class with the videos. In my opinion I didn't like that style and prefer normal lectures.
You really have to put in time outside of class. She tends to focus on the trickier concepts in class and lets you figure out the easier ones from her videos which are really helpful. Her tests are designed so you can pass, but make it not so easy to get an A. And she's kinda hot.
If you have great critical thinking and philosophical skills, then you may pass her tests and final which is the major part of the grade. Even though the textbook is optional, I highly recommended to buying it because it's more useful than her lectures. She's a nice instructor by the way.
Her questions are theoretically tricky, and it's not in the book to look for even when your homework deemed to be perfect. Her exams are scored strictly, if you get one wrong - you lose >5 points. I wish I can criticize her in the worst way.
She is THE worst professor I've ever had for math. Even for an online class. She's horrible and makes rude comments on corrections and makes you feel stupid. She expects you to explain every step even the simplest ones. And her tests are much harder than anything. The worse part was her comments she makes it's just not necessary.
Tedious, tedious handwritten work...taking up precious time you could have use for exposing yourself to new problems and truly learning. And she doesn't provide enough guidance to help you prevent pitfalls, just catches you on the exams instead.
She looks kind, but she isn't. Her homework is time-consuming and easy, but her exams are very hard. What's worse, she will deduct your points harshly.
The worst Calculus Professor I have had in my college career. She expects you to write the theorems and concepts and explain your process in solving the problem. She grades WAY too hard, even if you did the problem correct. Whatever happened to the days of being assigned plenty of homework problems and practice. I didn't sign up for English! Avoid!
She provides a rubric and examples of what she expects from you so if you follow them, you should have no problem passing the course. She is very willing to help you but you do have to do the work. This online class is not easier than a face to face class but you can access the material at your own pace. If you want to learn the material take her.
You can watch her videos over and over again. The videos are short but they are full of information. In addition, there are other videos available to view. She has worksheets that help guide you to what is important. During class she provide common errors that students make and help guide you against these errors. She is very helpful
Worst math class I have ever taken! The problems are conceptual, and there are not usually examples for the questions she assigns in the book. she is a tough grader and makes you feel stupid in her comments. It's difficult to ask her for help in this with anything and she doesn't post the correct answers to HW problems when they're graded. Avoid!
She gave way too much unnecessary work each week. Way overloaded, and graded really harshly. Basically felt like I had to learn everything on my own or from other resources.
She explains everything clearly in class.. You might have to watch a few video before class to get a gist of the basic ideas and she would explain whatever you might not have understood. She is a great teacher to be around and request help from. She always waits at the PSME CEnter after class if students need extra help.
The way the class is set up is that you watch a video about what's going to be taught the next day, and take notes on it. Then in class she answers questions about it and such, more so than lecturing. I liked it. She rarely lectured, actually, and when she did it personally didn't do much for me. The videos are really helpful and clear, though.
The teacher isn't like other math teacher eventually. She prefers self-study where you do your homework and she will explain it in the next meeting. She's not very good at teaching to be honest but her test is the best part. If you pay attention to her unclear lecture, i would guarantee 100% you can do the test easily. Not the best but 'ezpz'
The topic itself is easy, but her teaching style is really tedious. For HW, she makes you write out a problem statement, planning stage, 2nd way of doing problem, conclusion, and a summary for one problem. Questtest are easy, but marks off for not putting parens around points, writing "leftright not same" instead of "leftright LIMIT", etc...
Avoid her! She doesnt exactly teach. You have to self learn through the videos she assigns to you to watch. Her quizzes and exams are not exactly difficult but each question carry a lot of percentage. One question wrong can cause a grade difference. MCQ have multiple correct answers, you have to select all of the correct answers to get the score.
Very nice professor. Not many lectures in classes, you are expected to read textbook and watch videos (5 minutes long at most) at home. Homework is very short, just do one problem perfectly, no need to waste time on dozens of similar tasks.
I had her for my online calculus class. She is the worst teacher I have ever had. I had homework every single day, 7 days a week. Also, weekly quizzes, take home tests, discussion postings for every section, chapter assessments, and proctored midterm and final. There was also little to no instruction for each section, maybe a 3 minute video.
PSA I took calc for the first time with Lori and loved her! I've scored very high As on the 3 midterms, and was very confident in the class (you will too if you're a conceptual person, e.g you're good at coding/physics/economics/ philosophy/watever) but the final screwed me over. 14% drop. Take her if you want to learn, but selfstudy 4 final or die
She's a good teacher and you'll learn quite a lot from her. she's kind enough to help, but be warned, she gives 3 homeworks every meeting, each homework could be from 1 to 4 pages long. lots of quizes and exams, and finals are really hard. quizzes are next to nothing but they also mean next to nothing for your final grade. very conceptual
She is a SOOOOOOOOOO BAD teacher, I couldn't say anything. Do NOT take her class!
I took her class online but was still able to come in during her office hours which is pretty open after her actual class. She is helpful and responds to emails. Learning it online was not easy but with any other math class really, you just need to practice the problem. Everything she teaches is usually on the tests. Rec!
Taken her Math 1B class this Winter quarter. There were 3 exams in total and quizzes each week (sometimes twice a week). The homework format is very annoying which I really hate it. Despite the homework, the exams were quite easy and some were similar to the quiz. If you like doing homework, take her class. Otherwise, find a better professor.
She's super nice but doesn't teach, she posts these online videos (which I found mostly unhelpful) and wants her homework done a certain (annoying and time consuming) way. There were concepts on the test that I had never seen in class. She does replace your lowest test score with the final and drops your lowest quiz score which is helpful.
Hectic homework that you wont see in tests and quizzes. She does not teach, she expects you to learn everything by yourself.
You need to study yourself as she cannot even does simple math like 10-4+1. Ooh my god she said 6. Don't believe me? Ask other students in her Math 1C class.
You have to learn everything on your own. She is the worst teacher at Foothill. She spent more time on easy stuffs than the hard ones. Stupid
Once, we were given a quiz that she hadn't done that ahead of time. At that time, the whole couldn't solve the problem. We asked if she could solve if as a demo! She refused it.
would rather not taking math this quarter rather than taking her class. GLHF, so hard if u did not learn 1c before. Everyday has a quiz on her class. It weird that she teaches 3 math 1c course this quarter. Mean professor and hurt so many students. This is unfair for the students in her class. cuz other students could get an easy A in other profess
a good teacher, not too hard if you study ahead of time, but the class itself is way too demanding
If you want to learn, take this teacher. If you want an easy A, do your work.
Math is not my best subject, however professor Silverman made it doable, she is helpful when I ask her questions. The tests are hard, but you will pass as along as you do the work
