She's a great teacher! She's nice, and cares about her students. A little disorganized, but nothing negative to say about her at all. She helps to make the assignments enjoyable.
There is a lot of work in her class, but if you do your work, and ask for help a lot, you can pass her class. If you like a teacher with a sense of humor, try taking her class!
She is very sweet and nice. Does not make assignments very clear but if you ask she is very helpful.
she's nice and her conferences help out!
Dr. Smurthwaite is really smart, but not in a pretentious way, and has a great sense of humor. She always creates interesting discussions during class and makes time to talk to/help students (though sometimes she's a bit disorganized).
This lady was born to teach! She made everything we studied interesting. SO smart, but also laid back, and SO receptive. (And if you work really hard for her, she'll cut you slack when you truly need it.) One of the better professors I've ever had in terms of making old material emotionally and socio-politically relevant.
knows her stuff.very helpful.loved her!

she's such a good teacher and she sometimes cancels class when she has draft conferences which are really helpful when writing your papers. extremely nice and kickback. she talks a lot and laughs at things that aren't funny, but the class ends up to be a fun class.

Chose interesting texts, made class as fun as she could for a corny lady. willing to work with u if u need help. good teacher. a bit tough on her grading, but cool. did not require too much (grad stud) 12 pg paper + 5 short analyses papers. pretty easy if u meet her requirements...but picky on her grading. kiss her ass and get an A!
She was Great!!! Take her!!!
nice teacher! she is always willing to help and her classes are fun as there is always room for a joke. her grading is not the easiest, but i can only recommend her!
she wrote this at the end of my essay "this is not what she meant, but for the sake of your argument, it is well backed up" i was under the impression that there were no wrong answers in english as long as you can back in up with evidence from the text. I am an A student, and she gave me nothing higher than Bs. she is too harsh of a grader.
Dr. Smurthwaite is the BEST! She expects alot but thats ok. English shouldn't be a touchy-feely major where there are no wrong answers and everyone gets at least a B for showing up. I earned my grades in her class and really enjoyed it. Take her!
I took her last year and enjoyed the class. She is a very nice lady and tries to relate to her students. Makes the stories interesting and loves to have class discussions. Do the readings and assignments and you will do fine on her exams. Overall a good class. I highly recommend her.
There are a couple of readings each week. She requires journals and essay assignments. Theses are not hard at all if you read the stories. She expects you to participate in class. This way on the assignments and quizzes you know what to write. She is a pretty good professor.
She's pretty awesome.
always kept us couple mins after class.... very repetitive... no consistency... hard grader for
she never clear about anything.. waste time by repeating thing over and over again.
hard grader. hate her
She's an English teacher and she grades hard on essay. Her jokes aren't even funny.
Class is based mostly on test and a couple of essays. She returns papers REALLY late and is a bit unorganized however, if you become a favorite of hers I'm positive you'll pass I saw it with others who never attended
She is by far the most intelligent professor I've had at CSULB thus far. Doc's analysis, diction, and rhetoric are all spot on and she makes you feel good about yourself even if you're not the sharpest tool in the shed. Great professor if you have your feet wet in Lit Analysis and are serious about English.
Hard grader, not helpful, late sometimes to class. Jokes aren't funny. She is a little laggy on stuff too. She studder sometimes when she speaks too. Man did not like her. Sometimes boring. So good luck and have fun!
The most unprofessional professor I have ever had. We always received our work at the minimum of a month after we returned it--our midterm was returned to us a week before we took our final. She also played the syllabus by ear and consequently made the class read some material that we were never tested on. DO NOT TAKE!
Dr. Smurth. is a great instructor, and she really knows her stuff. I would highly recommend that students really participate and ask her questions, especially if they are unsure about the course materials, discussions, or assignments. Overall, she a great teacher.
This lady was absent more than any of her students. She never graded anything on time. We got our midterms back a week before the final, and we had a paper due the day of the final--not to mention, we had a quiz on the last regular day of class! Also, I've never had a substitute teacher in college until this class. Ridiculous. Avoid this prof!
She is very nice. Way too much reading in this class. You will not be tested on half of the stuff that seems important. Take really good notes and you should be fine. Book rags, sparksnotes, ect will be your best friends for this class.
Class is not that hard but she is a very picky grader. Make sure you proof read you papers at least ten times before handing them in. She is a nice lady, tries to be funny but she's really not. She's always late to class and keeps you afterwards. Not a lot of reading but there is weekly journals. There is one research paper, a lesson plan, a memoir.
She's tough but the novels chosen were great and varied. Lots of reading, volume of assignments was ok, but some of the assignments were very involved. Very nice and willing to help. You will learn and become a better student/writer by taking her class. Highly recommend.
Challenging class but reasonable. She keeps to syllabus. Available for help. Readings varied & interesting. She does lag on papers. Problem with writing? Go see her or hunt up a good tutor at WRL. Great discussions provide ideas for research papers. About her humor: Stick around CSULB and endure many grumpy, self-important profs, then take Dr. S.
Survey of American Ethnic Writers. She taught the course appropriately. Only problem was her disorganization which worked slightly in our favor in terms of grades. Otherwise, her teaching was of the highest level.
She was a bit disorganized, but she managed to cover the material adequately. However, her tests were quite specific on some points considering how generally she covered some of the material.
Barrel full of authors!270 is a survey class--expect to read a TON no matter who you take. Prof S is funny in a quirky way--laughs at her own jokes, but she's structured, helpful, and insightful while humble to other opinions--does not make you feel dumb! Tough on grammar/MLA formats,so bone up. Tests=moderate difficulty. Read! Take notes! Take her
She's really funny and class discussions were always interesting. She is not very helpful though, never responds to emails and lags on returning papers. Very picky on grading :/ but other than that...if you dont mind not knowing what your grade is all semester..take her!
The class was an easy, interesting class. My only real complaint was that I didn't really know my grade throughout the entirety of the semester. Dr. Smurthwaite is a nice lady, though she can be a little absent-minded at times. 3 quizzes, 2 papers, and the final was a quiz combined with an in-class writing assignment.
Not too tough as long as you're interested in the material and do the readings. A bit of a picky grader though.
nice,talks a lot and a picky grader.
Super funny and adorable. She may be late to class a few times. She is a little picky when it comes to papers but overall genuinely nice! Is willing you help you out as long as you ask for help. Kind of lags on giving back your papers. But overall a joy!
I have had Lori for several classes in my college career, and that was no accident! She is a wonderful professor who is willing to make the time to help out. Granted, she is late to her class on occasion and does lag a bit to return work but she is GREAT! Lots of reading, fair grader, & the quizes/final are not difficult if you've done the reading
If anyone takes English 1 for the first time or repeats it, I recommend this professor, she's one of the nicest professors, she would really help you out on your essays and CLEARLY explain the instruction of each essay. If you're not good at writing, she's the key to help you advance far!!!
One of the nicest professors ever!!! She has a awkward way of being funny and has a very good and clear explanation of instruction on each essay so if you suck at writing, she's the one who will help become a better writer. Late to class and class is cancelled quite a few times but I totally recommend this professor!!!
Smurthwaite was hands down one of my best teachers this year. Shes passionate about what she does and is extremely helpful. She is often late, but i didnt mind. She's bright and has a cute sense of humor. Always smiling and very approachable
This prof is very nice.usually she will come between 5-10 mins late to class. She explains the material clearly. There is no ppt so u hv to take ur own notes. There r 2 papers for the class plus a midterm and a final. Great class:).
Mixed bag here. Great lecturer, willing and able to help you with papers, knows her stuff. On the down side, very tough grader, very MLA strict, extremely disorganized. Syllabus changed almost weekly making it confusing and hard to keep up. Several group projects (not ever fun) and you will work very hard for your grade.
This instructor is a nightmare! A total bear when it comes to the work load. Too much, too soon, and way too long! She basically wants you to bleed for your grade and then doesn't hesitate to give you a bad one anyway! Extra long paper assignments, super tough grading, horrible group projects and tough tests. Nothing to like here!
omg, Dr. Smurthwaite is the best professor I've ever had. Her class is so inspiring, attending is a must whether or not you intend to pass haha. She's a great lecturer who is obviously passionate about her work. The workload is average-- I've had worse-- but I definitely found it fun!
She has you read four to five stories per class session and does not cover the majority of them. So far, we're four weeks behind and we have not gotten back the majority of the assignments we have turned in. She's super scatterbrained and boring during the lectures, even though the readings are interesting. Her feedback is also very vague/unhelpful
Didnt show up for class, expects you to work around her schedule. Lots of essays and falls behind on grading.
Professor Smurthwaite is kind and open to students' perspectives during discussion. The reading is a lot to keep up on, as in most survey courses, but if you do enough of the reading to contribute to class discussions and write your papers, you shouldn't have a problem.
Don't take her, she doesn't show up half the time. Says she'll go easy yet grades hard anyways. Takes forever to grade anything. Still haven't gotten one of my essays and projects back yet.
Professor Smurthwaite is not only an excellent teacher, but a wonderful person. Taking this class with her saved me this semester. She is intelligent, structured, fair, and compassionate. Class discussions are relevant and interesting. Assignments are clear and organized. So much respect and gratitude for this absolute gem of a professor. Take her!
Pros: goes over/analyzes the readings in class which makes the exams easy, passionate and energetic, reasonable and fair grader, only homework is the reading (no annotations or anything like that) Cons: often late to or skips class, tests are essay-based, laughs at her own jokes a lot Work hard on the essays, do the reading, go to class,
Focuses too much on the negatives in essays. Little positive reinforcement. Often gets on Soapbox & off topic in class. Gets mad if we ask her too clarify instructions. Not urgently communicative. Acts as though her class is the only one we have time for. Boring assignments. Obvious favoritism for some students. CC group lesson plan is a flop.
Dr. Smurthwaite does not communicate with her class. She frequently misses without notifying her students. She also does not post grades. Whether it be a homework assignment, quiz, or essay, Dr. Smurthwaite does not put any of the grades up on Beachboard, making it extremely difficult to gauge your process in the class.
She does an amazing job at explaining grammar concepts, especially as some are hard to understand. There is weekly homework but the workbook has the answers in the back in case you need help. I recommend going to lectures even though I don't think she takes attendance just because it is easier to understand the lessons better. She is so nice too!
She was the most unorganized Professor that I have ever had at Cal State Long Beach. She was constantly late to our zoom meetings, always making excuses as to why things werent graded in a timely manner. Grammar is a challenging course, she made it even more difficult. I would just avoid taking her if you have the option.
She shouldnt have been teaching this grammar course. Unfortunately she chose to wait till the last minute to grade everything, resulting in a lot of her students not having decent grades on the exams. Overall she was very on organized, constantly late to our zoom meetings. If you have the option I would avoid at all costs.
She was a horrible professor to put it quite honestly. She was one of those professors who never took accountability for her students not understanding the material. Our first exam many students are on unsuccessful. Same as the second and third exam. But she never did anything to make her methods stronger. Same constantly late and behind approach.
I feel bad giving her a bad review, but honestly, this was the worst class I've ever taken at CSULB. She was constantly late to our zoom meetups, always with the same excuse. It just wasn't worth the stress she put on the students.
Prof Smurthwaite engages the material in a profound way and makes intelligent points about the plays. If you read the material and pay attention during lectures, this should be an easy class to pass. There is one group assignment, and a big research paper in addition to midterms and quizzes, but nothing impossible. Understanding & caring too.
Average, nothing more to really say.
Professor Smurthwaite seems like a great person, but she was a mess this semester. Super unorganized, always at least 15 minutes late to class, horrible at staying on track, and would take forever to grade assignments - we never got our grades or feedback for 2 big assignments. She's not the worst, but she's not the best.
I can definitely tell that Prof Smurthwaite is passionate about literature. Her lectures are very interactive and typically interesting to me. The only thing is that she's really bad at responding to emails. Also, she tends to show up to class late/not send the Zoom link until like 10 min after class started. But overall, still an easy class.
She is always late to class, 5-15 minutes at most. Takes often 3-4 days to reply to emails. Although she is passionate about her subject, she tends to shut people up if they tend to disagree and speak over them. You won't see your grades in quite a while because she takes eons. This sem she pushed idk all assignments back which is a plus and not.
great teacher and online its not mandatory to attend. We did have alot of reading but if you attend the zoom she goes over all the reading. SHe also cancelled readings due to her being behind. The only bad thing is she does not put grades on Canvus. I attended all classes and there was no quizes. There was 2 papers and writen exams. Spring 2021
Disappointing for a class of this level. Always late to class and doesn't offer good feedback. NEVER returns/grades papers on time and her entire grading criteria is vague. She's a tough grader but doesn't offer rubrics and loads you w/ busy work. You won't know your grade the entire semester or ever see a grade for 2/3 of your work.
Second day in class and professor Smurthwaite od already showing the issues other reviews on here brought up. It is deeply frustrating and disappointing. Please drop her while you still can.
She does a great job during lectures & goes in-depth on the readings. As long as you read & attend class you should be ok. However, we are behind & had to drop a lot of the readings. I'm barely finding out my grade & it's November but she gives good feedback! Overall, she's ok, but if you aren't confident in English, I probably wouldn't take her.
Dr. Smurthwaite was the definition of a "just okay" professor. She was very friendly and offered great insight into the readings, but she is incredibly slow at grading. It took her nearly two months to get us grades back for our first exam, and that slowness is detrimental when you're only graded on a couple assignments.
Professor Smurthwaite is an extremely slow grader. She continues to push back due dates, due to her not being able to get grades back. We have a week left of school and we still have a 5 page paper to do and an exam. It is not a super hard class, but definitely a frustrating one.
Professor Smurthwaite makes me want to cry. She is so late on everything: attendance for class, returning graded work, and even assigning work. We were supposed to receive our final grade today, this morning. We did not. And do not know when we will. She is very disorganized, do not take her.
Definitely areas of improvement for her teaching, but she works with you if you're persistent. She has other responsibilities to attend to, so if you're looking for a hands-on, student-centric professor you might want to look elsewhere. She does a good job of giving insight on the readings, which they are a lot of, so you learn a lot.
Do not take her. Shes a nice person but completely disorganized. Doesnt answer emails. Pushes back due dates. Doesnt grade anything. Hasnt graded anything the entire semester other than one exam out of three. Still have no idea what my grade is. Semester has been over for days and still nothing. Find a different professor.
Didnt have a schedule or syllabus for the first half of the semester. Cant be bothered to grade in a timely manner. Semester has been over for 3 days and I only have 1 graded test back of 3. Keeps you on harsh deadlines but makes promises she cant keep. Accountability isnt in her vocabulary. Zero returned emails. Save your sanity, avoid her.
BY FAR THE WORST PROFESSOR AT CSULB. I am a straight A student, after this class not anymore. Class consisted of 8 discussion posts, 3 written exams, a 2 page essay, and a 5 page essay. She didn't grade anything til the end of the semester. Only saw one grade and that was for one of the exams. I don't know where I went wrong. I am an English major.
She is mean enough that it makes me feel like I don't want to ask her any questions.
She is really nice! Lots of discussing in class and only a few discussion posts. Very manageable. Absence policy is pretty lenient. She had some personal stuff that made her cancel a handful of classes, but was understanding and adjusted the schedule for us.
I'm unsure if I caught Professor Smurthwaite at a bad time, but she was hardly ever in class; the first month of the semester was held on zoom despite being advertised as an in-person class, and she would consistently cancel in-person classes a few minutes before the start time. Very slow grader; didn't get a midterm back until after the final.
(I took her for 382 but its not listed) Dr. Smurthwaite is an incredibly kind and caring professor. I understand the other students' frustration with late grading, but it really doesn't bother me. Her lectures are interesting, she's very encouraging. If you can go with the flow you'll be fine in her classes.
Dr. Smurthwaite is SUPER qualified to teach all the classes she does. She makes grammar fun, and she recognizes the efforts of students who work hard consistently. She is also very patient. She had some family situations to deal with during the semester, but she kept all students updated. For her classes, let your hard work speak for itself.
Professor Smurthwaite is a great professor. Tests and quizzes are open book and notes. Her class is easy, just do the work and you'll pass. She is very kind and will explain things well. Will explain what you got wrong on the test and does review with the class in order to assist students in areas they need help on. Would take again ((: !!!!!
Having her as a professor feels like partnering with an unreliable classmate on a project. She assigned readings, discussions, exams, and essays but struggled to grade. Her tardiness, class cancellations, forgetfulness in uploading assignments, and lack of email responses are completely unprofessional. She should consider rethinking her job.
Clearly knowledgeable about American literature. The problem is her lack of communication, late grading, and last minute class cancellations. She does not respond to emails and she emails the class very last minute about updates. She is a veryyyy slow and critical (about grammar) grader. She is a nice person, but professor wise she is not the best
dont take her unless you HAVE to. boring lectures, got grades back on papers/exams 1-3 months later, doesn't understand canvas, cancelled class a couple of hours before its starting time or changed it to zoom at least five times. graded on six things, three exams, one short analysis, one essay, and six discussion posts that have a combined grade.
she thinks everything revolves around her and that her students don't have other classes. she cancelled class last minute because she wanted to have a weekend in new york??? i'm sure she didn't get tickets right before class where was our heads up?
I'm not sure if i took her class during a bad time or what. She always cancels class last min no notice until that moment and the few times she doesnt shes 25-30 min late. Never gets grades back which pushes back her down deadlines. Rly disappointing and frustrating since im paying for this class and not getting an adequate education from her
Prof's behavior ruined the class. Cancelled class often and late notice. Week 14 only 2 things were graded. Doesn't know how to use Canvas, can't see our overall grade, did not show a due date, rarely posted things on time. Students felt concerned about this, she was rude. Said students were ridiculous for asking her to shorten a college essay.
The only problem I saw with this professor was she did take a while to give grades back, and would be a little sassy when asked about it. But she was funny in class and i found some of the readings enjoyable. Stopped doing the readings halfway & just Going to class while doing the assignments still got me an A.
Disorganized. Doesn't stick to the class schedule and doesn't notice it until the class asks about scheduled essays. If you ask, you'll get sass. Doesn't respond to emails. Don't expect grades soon. She makes claims about college-level work but tells English majors to dumb down their expectations because it's an UPPER-LEVEL GE class?!
She is very disorganized and her grading criteria makes no sense. I would say however, that if you want a class that you could just breeze through in a braindead kind of way you would probably enjoy her
Mrs. Lori is a great teacher; however, she allows the world to get in the way of her teaching. Ultimately, this leads to you teaching yourself grammar. If I could, I would choose another teacher. However, I would like to say that the open book test with notes made this class very easy.
Professor is a great person, but is super unorganized. Keeps changing stuff around last minute. Class is easy. Although lectures are boring, and work is boring as well. Not really interesting. Some readings I have read before in lower division courses, which are fine but I found repetitive personally. Takes lots of time to grade.
This class was everywhere and terrible. Always making SUPER LAST min changes to the syllabus, her feedback is not clear. She'll write about something then contradict herself in the next one. Sends emails at 2am three days later, that were suppose to be sent out right after class session. Takes days to respond, allows late assignments just email her
Unorganized and unprofessional. She was constantly late for class or cancelled at the last minute. Nothing has been graded.
Extremely unorganized. Was constantly late to class. Inconsistent grader. Didn't show up to class prepared to teach the readings assigned.
She's a very nice lady and knowledgeable in the subjects she teaches. However, this is overshadowed by how unorganized/scattered she is. Cancels class last minute and does not grade until last minute. Plus, she's always late to class I'm not even exaggerating- not ONCE has she shown up on time the entire semester, which is impressive almost.
One of the worse classes I've taken. I show up, she talks, class is over, I leave. No interaction between her and students or even students and other classmates. Super boring and what we learn is irrelevant. Would not recommend.
Cancelled class often. Didn't grade anything until after midterms. Not a very good lecturer when she was actually there.
I would drive to this class without a seatbelt hoping I wouldn't make it there. If you aren't religious, pick one and pray for yourself to pass.
Lori is a very kind prof, and extremely knowledgable about what she teaches. Great lectures that help you on exams. However, she almost never showed up on time to class, often cancelled class, and graded EVERYTHING late. The entire class was anxious about their grade (didn't know what it would be). Very stressful class to be in, but easy overall.
