I enjoyed this class and think that she's a great prof. I appreciated that she encouraged critical thinking instead of just giving the facts of criminal and social policy. Gave us a 60/40 split for the midterm and final (highest mark worth 60%)! nice!
Good prof. Encourages questions and dialogue. Easy workload and very fair marking.
Really sweet woman. The making is fair and she makes the class interesting. You can tell she knows what she's talking about and is passionate about the subject matter.
SHE IS ONE OF DA BEST PROFS IVE EVER HAD!! She actually cares about her students!!!
One of the best professors. She is a very intelligent woman and her marking is very fair. Even though the subject matter is not very intriguing, she tries her best to make it as intersting as possible. She is very helpful and approacheable, so don't hesitate to ask her for help.
I hate crim theories courses but she somehow made it tolerable! Very smart and good rapor with class.
The most understanding and kind professor! She is a great teacher and is very fair in her marking. Her tests are straightforward and to the point. She is also very approachable and always willing to help you, even if it means going out of her way. If only all Ottawa U professors were like her!
Prof. S-O is a very helpful prof. She will go out of her to help students understand the material. Her teaching style is not very stimulating, but if you pay attention, you will do well. The assignment was easy, as was the final. The midterm can be tricky. The best way to excel in her class is to teach yourself the material. Overall though, good!
Her lectures are clear and concise, and her lecture slides are very well put together. Her exams are fair, and if you do poorly on the midterm, she has been known to use your mark on the final instead. Basically, if you do poorly on the midterm, or need an extension on your paper, go and talk to her before doing something drastic like dropping!
Her lectures are jammed packed with info, her slides basically cover everything impt. in the readings which is good b/c there's a lot of reading. The exam and midterm were really straight forward, she tells you whats on it, no suprizes. paper was marked easily. overall great class!
Great proff!! Really helpful. Very intelligent!
Great proff!!! I have had her twice and she is very commited to her students. She is an awesome proff!
This class was extremely interesting and Lori presented the material in a very effective & interesting manner. She attempt to make her lectures fun, and in most cases succeeds. Her exams are a little tough, but reading the notes & attending the lectures will definitely help you get a great mark. Definitely take this course!
She's fantastic, explains the material clearly and keeps things interesting. She's very open to participation and class discussion, I would love to take another class with her
I LOVE HER!! If she see's that you are making an effort in class, she will reward you. Its so refreshing to see a professor who actually cares about the students. She wants to see us succeed and do well. I would recommend any class that is taught by Lori!
BEST PROF EVER! So helpful, so understanding, exams are short and to the point.
very understanding prof...
GREAT PROF! She really cares about her students and how they do. Her class has a mid-term, which is extremely fair and she tells you the questions beforehand, and a final paper - which she details clearly what she wants in it. She is a great professor, if you get a chance - take her class!
Im shocked to see how many students actually like her as she is seriously all over the place. Half the time I have no idea what shes talking about and she is VERY repetitative for no reason. Midterm was stupid, all memorization which is unnecessary! Her slides are not straight forward and neither is she. Dont bother taking her class!
THE BEST! I go out of my way to take Lori's classes. If you listen you can learn a great deal. This IS why I came to university! She's also very down to earth and always willing to help! AWESOME PROF!
Surprised by the good reviews. Lori simply reads her lecture notes in class and hardly refers to the text. Basically memorized her notes and managed to get an A on the midterm. Easy in this sense but overwhelmingly boring. She really needs to liven up her course material and not simply read notes that are available online before class.
BEST FEM TEACHER EVER, she cares about her students and is a wonderfully nice person, very knowledgeable.
Didn't enjoy this class at all. Lori needs to learn to keep her own political views out of the lectures, and many of her examples are broad generalizations with little basis in reality. Teaching style is extremely annoying, tends to ramble and branch off into other topics. This makes it hard to figure out what's important, and what isn't. AVOID.
Amazing prof. She truly cares about her students. Take her class, attend her lectures and you will get the mark you deserve. My only complaint is that she uses a lot of media. There's a film every class or so.
All over the place, very repetitive. Highly suggest other sections!
She repeats the same points over and over again, which end up not being on the exams!! Not recommended!!!!
FABULOUS, every prof should be like this, clear, helpful, committed to making sure ALL of her students succeed, always ready and available to help, has her whole heart in what she does. Impressive and truly amazing.
Amazing professor and person! Lori is fantastic, brilliant and VERY helpful. I thought it was great that she taught the class from different perspectives. Her grading is a bit tough, but not unfair. I'm disappointed to hear she won't be teaching in Sept 2012!
I think she is wonderful! I highly recommend her!
I love this professor. She is more than fair. She makes her expectations clear. She is extremely understanding and supportive. She is very knowledgeable and has a great deal of passion. I have taken three courses with her and she is my absolute favorite professor. If you have the opportunity to take any of her courses - do it! AMAZING prof.
I love Lori! I always try and take classes with her. She's definitely one of my favourite profs at uOttawa. Very student friendly.
Very difficult course, very difficult marking. Not recommended.
Lori is by far the best professor I have ever had. She truly cares about her students. She makes boring material interesting. Very engaging. If you have the opportunity to take a class with her, do it! GREAT prof!
Amazing prof! Would definitely take her classes again in the future!!!
Lori is an amazing criminology Professor. Not only is she funny, but she cares a lot about her students and will go over concepts repeatedly. Her assignments are fair as she gives you the midterm and final exam questions ahead of time. I strongly suggest attending class to understand the material and doing your readings for the final. Best Prof!
Lori is a great professor here at uOttawa. The only down side is that the lectures are quite long and can go on forever! Sweet lady and the midterm and final arn't exactly hard. She gives u the questions before the tests to help you prepare but she does expect quality in her answers. Work hard and you'll nail the course
Class is boring, hard to stay awake. She's really nice and will help understand concepts if you ask. Really repetitive. Critical to pay attention to the examples she uses in class and in the readings. Overall she's a good prof but I found it hard to pay attention in class.
She is an amazing person first of all. She is a great prof too, regardless if the classes are boring for some students. This one was very interesting, I had her for CRM 2308 too. Her expectations are clear, she works hard to make sure you know what she wants. Easy A if you keep up with readings. Can't emphasize enough, she is a great person!!!!!!
We need more profs like Lori, she is clear, kind and understanding. She is also very passionate about making a change. She approaches students with care and interest, can't believe she was sick and would stay after class for so long to discuss questions. Exams are easy if you pay attention to what she says in class and take notes. Take her class!!!
Best professor I have yet to have at University of Ottawa - I highly recommend taking her class!
I LOVED HER! oh my goodness, she is so awesome. Her lectures aren't very structured but it is hard to structure a FEM course so I don't blame her for it. Lots of readings but very interesting. She is really great to work with and makes FEM class really enjoyable. Great discussions and quite funny at times. Seriously recommend.
Fantastic teacher on all levels. Have taken a few classes with Lori and regardless of the topic she knows her stuff. Attend classes and do the readings.
Best prof at UOttawa. So sad I took her in my 4th year, I would have loved to take more of her classes. As a woman, her Women Studie's class changed my life. She's such a passionate person. Very sweet and caring. Cannot recommend her enough.
Lori is amazing and she genuinely wants you to do well. However she's a tough prof and you really have to study your ass off and actually know what you're talking about to do well. I enjoyed the class but it has caused me so much stress.
She know's her stuff, but during lectures she goes way off topic a lot, and throws in her political opinions a little too much. She pretty much restates what the readings say, and yaps on and on and looses track and like I said goes off topic, making it hard to take notes.
I have taken a few courses with this professor and find she has so much knowledge to share. She teaches in a way that cements information into the brain that is not easily forgotten after the exam, as is the case with the majority of other classes. She truly cares and helps her students to succeed.
This was a new class this year, so my expectations were low to begin with. This prof is very nice and funny, but she rambles on about irrelevant material which makes the class extremely hard to pay attention in. Her slides were so detailed and there were so many long readings i was so confused. 2 midterm, 1 take home all based off online readings
This was a new class for my year so I didn't have many expectations. She's a great professor despite getting side tracked often. She is extremely approachable if you have any questions and always offers help outside of class. Be prepared for lots of reading.
She's interesting to listen to but when it comes to grading.... She grades really hard :/ Class average for our midterm was a 50 SO
Course is hard. If you want to actually take a criminology course, do not take this one. This is a POLITICS class and is completely her opinion and rarely follows slides. She makes things harder than they need to be.
DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE. She goes on rants and doesn't stick to her lecture slides. I honestly regret taking this class, the class average was a 55. Examinations are lengthy although she gives the essay questions in advance. Overall she is a nice lady, very opinionated and intelligent and I hope she takes the time to use feedback to improve.
Lori would constantly get distracted, rearing off topic and having to rush through her slides. Her marking scheme is very hard, although she does give you the questions beforehand. I do not recommend this course at all, unless compulsory. As stated our class average was in the 50's and that was with the help of having the questions beforehand.
Lori is someone who truly cares about her students. She makes accommodations when necessary, and is very fair with her grading. She gives great feedback on her papers and is always available via email, after class, and during her office hours. There is a lot of reading to do, but she helps her class through particularly difficult texts.
Had her for the FEM2 course during the Winter 2018 Semester. EXCELLENT. I see she had a bad situation with CRM students but her FEM course was amazing. Not to mention she gives tons of opportunities to make up your grade if you start off on a rough patch. She's also approachable. Would stay like 20 minutes after each class answering questions.
Really interesting content however she goes off topic really easily. Talks a lot and really fast so you don't always know what information is important. She gives clear criteria for the midterm and paper but she's a really tough grader. Have to read a lot and work hard.
Prof Stinson was very kind and easy to listen to in class, but much of what was in the readings was not covered in class in great detail. Normally this would be okay but this was a second year course and many of the readings dealt with topics better suited for upper level classes if she was planning on not explaining what theorists main points were
Lori has problems with getting off topic, she means well and obviously cares about this super interesting course but just can't seem to stay on the same topic. Unclear expectations and grading schemes and super verbose, difficult to understand assignments and exam questions. I'd personally avoid her, cool class but she's just not cut out to teach.
She is a great teacher. She does tend to go off topic but in the end she is a caring teacher that cares and understands that students are under a lot of pressure and gives chances for those who want to improve their grade to do so or at then end of the semester will boot the grades of the students that have put in the work and deserve it.
She is a really easy professor. Effectively teaches the subject matter and keeps it interesting. Super reasonable when it comes to assignments. It is easy to get an A in her class if you at least try a little. Assigns lot of reading to do, but she gives you the questions before the exams and lets you bring in a cheat sheet.
Love Lori. She does tend to go off topic while she's lecturing. Wish I could have cracked a bottle of wine in class as we got into some great discussions. Take her if you want to learn!
She gets off topic wayyyyyyy too much and talks about herself way too much. She spends too much time on irrelevant topics then misses all the actual important info. Going to class does not help at all because her lectures are so boring you can't even pay attention. She's nice but she's kinda unprofessional as she swears in almost every sentence.
Lori is super funny and seems like a cool woman but gets off topic soo much and drags out her lectures. Exams were super hard
Lori is a very nice person and a great professor to go to if you have questions about assignments or want to know more about a subject. The marking in the class was fair and she prepares you well for the midterm. However, She can get way off topic making the class longer than necessary and hard to stay engaged in. Attendance taken twice per class
Professor Stinson is lovely to talk to and she's super nice and funny. However, although she claims that her tangents are relevant to the topic covered in class, they drag on for the entire 3 hour lecture which makes coming to class a little difficult. With that said, her exams are super fair and is open to questions after class!
Impossible to take coherent notes, she will often go on long and drawn out tangents about something nobody can hear. Although what she talks about on her tangents is essential, she doesn't relate it to the course in a substantial way. Also her lecture style is so profoundly dull it must've taken her years to hone; honestly, it's almost impressive.
I honestly had a terrible experience with this prof. Her classes are not relevant since she always gets off topic. Her instructions are always unclear and her expectations are unrealistic. I think her midterm average was in the 50% range and many were afraid they wouldn't even pass her class. AVOID AT ALL COST.
This prof is so unprofessional. Swears in every sentence. She is very rude and personally I do not find her approachable, she has no issues to make you feel dumb. Her instructions for midterms and finals are not clear and have no issues failing the majority of the class. AVOID HER AT ALL COST.
Lori was such a wonderful professor. The textbooks and readings she picked were obviously very thoughtfully selected and highly relevant. I loved this independent nature of the class where you had the ability to read, form your own opinions and then arrive in class to discuss them.
Love this prof! I was going through alot when i took this course, not only did she give me all the extensions i need, she also showed she truly cared. She is a kind and genuine person. I see people talking about her "tangents", but I find them always super helpful, it helps to relate the course content to the real world. one of the best profs.
Lori is a very good professor that really cares about her students. She always takes time to make sure she answers all the questions and make sure the student understands before she moves on. I would definitely take her classes again.
She clearly cares about her students and what she's talking about, but she goes on super long tangents that have never really helped with course understanding. Because of that, the material seems a lot more loosely structured and disorganized. Wouldn't avoid, but wouldn't enthusiastically take again.
She is honestly the best professor I have ever had. You can tell her priority is her students, and the level of care she shows us is unparalleled. She is sympathetic to students surrounding deadlines and she was always transparent about what to expect on a midterm/exam - highlighting how the focus was always the student's learning. Highly Recommend
Lori is a very exciting and personal academic. She cares about her students and the ideas the present. If you show a willing to learn, she really wants to help. She was always available outside of class, and will make sure you meet personal goals if you put in the effort. Will purposely look for her classes again!
A very caring professor. She is flexible with the assignments and understands her students very well! Her instructions are clear and specific. She provides supplementary resources, and is accessible outside class, during discussions, and always replies to emails. Would highly recommend, she is extremely knowledgeable about what she teaches.
Learned lots and found the prof to be respectful and kind. However, lectures were super heavy and if you miss even one you fall behind. But if you attend every lecture and read the readings you can do really well.
Lectures were really fun and she gives many hints about grading expectations. Not an easy marker. Readings from the textbook were dense, boring (as such is expected from Canadian political history), but ideologically skewed toward social liberalism à la Trudeau. This makes for easy, silly, fun and ample critique from a socialist left perspective.
she's a giant in her field and you can tell. she encourages discussion and she teaches well, if you don't like politics it can get boring but for people who do you'll know that she should be teaching at Harvard or smth. she's also really nice and flexible (gave us an extra week to submit assignments). honestly an icon.
I think this course was the one I was the least motivated to do. The class recordings were long and quite heavy. The professor is truly a kind person and cares about her students but she and the TA's grading is quite tough. I also found that she went on tangents so it was difficult to decipher important information vs rhetoric.
willing to curve grade upwards and is very helpful and understanding
She uses great examples for all concepts brought up in class. Very interactive and engaging lectures. The content in her Canadian Politics was easy, but test cover everything - so make sure to really dive into the readings and the lecture. If you're present and ready to learn, you'll have a great time in her class. She's very lenient on due dates.
I think professor Stinson is a good professor, definitely knows what she's talking about but unfortunately I wouldn't recommend her for a 3 hour lecture, she talks quiet and goes on tangents about stuff that she already talked about or stuff that isn't really relevant. it was a bit hard to pay attention.
I enjoyed my course with her, I thought she was very engaging and interesting to listen to. She relied on the textbook a lot, especially for the essays and exam answers, so don't pass on it for POL2101 with her. Very VERY accomodating, allowed everyone to stay home and watch live feed or recorded posts of the classes. Really enjoyed her!
Take this class. Easy A.
Lori is a very nice person, very friendly and very caring- although, she is quite a bad teacher. She was accessible outside of class, but when it came to the exams, they were extremely difficult- a lot of material should be mentioned but should also be condensed into a 400-word answer- she wasn't clear on instructions, and was overall a hard marker
Professor Stinson, while being knowledgeable and kind, is not a good lecturer. Information-heavy slides coupled with a monotone delivery and a three hour class time made this class an absolutely brutal slog. She is clearly an expert in her field, though it detracted from the lecture quality as it made her explanations quite lengthy.
Lori is an amazing person. She's extremely caring of all her students success. She's also a genius at what she does. Her lectures can be difficult to follow, but if you make enough of an effort to follow along, you'll find it to be a very rewarding experience.
Do not take this class if you want to keep your sanity. She does not know how to teach WHATSOEVER. All she does is ramble and ramble about things irrelevant and it is so confusing to follow. I taught myself the whole class. She will fail you for the slightest mistake in citations or if you do not cite her (wrong) way.
Very inaccessible outside of class. Did not have office hours and did not respond to emails *during midterms and exams* for days even when she specifically stated that we could contact her for questions about the exams. This lack of clarity could have been avoided had there been better communication on behalf of the prof!
A great prof in general, but if you get the wrong corrector you'll be fighting for your life + your GPA. The content is clear, what is expected of you is clear, but be prepared to gamble with how strictly the corrector you're assigned adheres to those expectations. The only reason I would not take a class with this prof. again is the RNG element.
I never ever give feedback to profs, but she was amazing. Not only was she clear on how she wanted things done, she herself goes through and makes sure the markers are in fact doing their jobs. She's very clear and gives hints to what will be on the exam.
This class had the hardest grades I've ever experienced. Everyone says the professor is understanding, but honestly, she just would ramble about her hectic schedule and she doesn't have time for office hours. Her feedback was not useful. Would not recommend if you are trying to keep your GPA up.
the lectures are light work. I chose the midterm/final choice for the grading. the quiz portion is all in the textbook and the essays are focused on poweproints and textbook so it's good! she Is also a very understanding prof
I'll be honest, this class & prof really disappointed me. When I dropped it we were 3 weeks behind schedule in her slides because she rambled so much. As a trans person, I took Women & Gendered Crime excited for the intersectionality she expressed the course would have, but instead never have I felt more invisible in a class in my life. Bad times
Yeah, she was hard to get a hold of when needed outside of class sometimes, but her lectures were honestly pretty awesome. Her assignments were easy to follow, and I like her personality because she definitely does care about her students.
The Best Professor I have every had at uOttawa. I'm currently studying Economics and Public Policy, this class was mandatory. Lori Stinson is such an amazing prof. A midterm and a final that were both take-home. Constant extensions given. Very fair grading. Lori Stinson is one of the few professors that make uOttawa good. Take her course if you can
skip this class if you have her
lectures were a little bit unbearable, but the exams were take home and reliant on the textbook. timed components on the exams were straight from the slides which were posted on brightspace, as were lectures. she's very funny, absolutely no filter which I personally loved, very transparent about expectations on exams.
class attendance was never more than15/216 people. her exams were take-home but the questions were difficult. dont even get me started on the correctors who were on the biggest power trip, giving completely arbitrary grades that she would do nothing about. not available outside of class ever. this class caused me too much stress for what it was
AVOID HER AT ALL COST, SUCH A HARD MARKER AND KEEPS TALKING ABOUT THINGS THAT DOESN'T MATTER IN THE CLASS. SHE WASTES OUR TIME
Prof Lori is great. She has first hand experience in Politics, having run for office before. We had numerous chats about politics before and after class that were extremely rewarding. If you're a PoliSci student this class will be easy as pie. If you have knowledge in Politics and general society knowledge you can get a good grade easily.
Ignore all bad ratings. Sweet, kind, and VERY easy going. The people that don't like her fall into two categories: 1) Academic nut jobs who cry about receiving an A- instead of an A or 2) People who never show up to class or don't do any work and complain about getting anything under a C. Cosplay as a leftist and you're good to go. Amazing Prof!
I really disliked her lecture style. A good chunk of class time was taken up by her tangeants on topics that weren't important/relevant to the course that she repeated almost every. single. lecture. She would cut off or talk over students who raised counter-arguments to her political views/claims and not give them the chance to response.
Lori Stinson is an odd professor. She takes hours to cover only two slides, and she goes on bizarre conspiracy theories rant during classes, and only talks about her strange political opinion. She is not a professor; she's a yapper.
This course isn't hard so if you want a course where you can skip lectures and still do fine this one works, just skim though the slides and you will do fine. This prof loves to talk about random things during class time like conspiracies or her own political views. If you actually plan on attending class pick a different prof.
Likes to talk... I wouldn't say she is full of herself, but she seems to like her own voice. Her guidelines are ridiculously complicated, second to only Joseph Roman. Mid-term, optional essay, and final, all reasonable questions, all reasonable grading. She rambles incoherent conspiracy theories, taking time from class. She is a sweet lady though.
Professor Stinson's class was a mixed bag. Her lectures were engaging, but assignments were tough. unstuck ai and the textbook helped me stay on track. Overall, a challenging yet rewarding course.
Overall, the class was very easy. Attended the online lectures for the first few weeks but stopped and stuck w/ lecture slides and the textbook when half of her lecture would be talking about her personal political opinions or focusing on one slide from 2 weeks ago she still hadn't talked about fully. Read the textbook/slides and you'll be fine.
Easiest prof ever. You literally dont have to show up. also like 15% of your mark is just free. Extensions are all built in to everything, super easy prof. Extremely political, hates harper, but thats fine. She definitely projects her opinion onto the course, but she legitimately wants her students to suceed and makes it easy to do so. Great prof.
Dr Stinson seemed like an excellent professor at the beginning of the term. Understanding and caring. As the term progressed her lectures became ramblings about her own political views and were very difficult to follow. She has also proven to be fairly condescending and out right rude to student. Avoid if you can.
She's a very knowledgeable woman, I loved going to class just for her. She posted all lectures so nothing is mandatory. She gives so many chances to improve your grade, but is very intolerant of AI use. She's awesome though, changed our finals to a take home because she heard us out on Respondus being glitchy and awful. Take her if you can!
worst professor i have ever had. Failed many students in my class for no reason. I have never put so much effort into a class to be treated and marked so unfairly. do not take her class she is very unprofessional and marks unfairly.
Her hatred for AI was more standout to me then the stuff we learnt. Was an interesting course, but she kept going on tangents that went nowhere. The take-home exams were great but the grading criteria was confusing. A mixed bag for sure.
She does go on a few odd tangents (Trump, other politicians and AI) but overall a great professor. Lectures are recorded and posted on brightspace and lots of hints are given for midterms.
Avoid if possible. Her lectures were infuriating -- she would go on unrelated tangents that verged on conspiracy theories & regularly spout misinformation. When politely challenged, she would double down and argue that a reputable source was wrong. Don't bother with a notebook because her lectures are worthless; just read the slides and textbook.
this prof is lowk evil. her exams are next level difficult - she makes it so no amount of studying or revising can give u an a+
Lectures are an absolute slog; she reads directly from the slides, but attendance is still mandatory. Goes on semi-related tangents with the most surface-level opinions about politics. The class is essentially a grade 7 civics class, super easy; however, she grades super harshly on the exams.
Grades are based on the midterm and exam. She is a harsh grader, and I believe it's based on her political views. She tends to be more lenient if it fits her narrative. She only reads off the slides, and her lectures are very painful to attend. I recommend sitting close if you actually attend her lecture and manipulate yourself into finding joy.
The class is okay! Stinson is nice and the content is nothing to more advance than grade 10 politics. She mostly reads off the slides but attendance is mandatory. Loves herself a political tangent but it kills time so idc. Rumour has it she marks hard, I didn't find this at all so just make sure to explain yourself well. Only midterm + final though
Compared to other courses in the same field, her exams are noticeably heavier in terms of content, and she marks incredibly hard on her long-answer sections; these are usually worth more than half the exam marks. Her lectures are also incredibly boring, and she goes on long, unrelated tangents.
Although Professor Stinson is a great person, she is the worst professor I have ever had. Her course is built entirely around a textbook, so her lectures are literally just her favourite quotes. She expects you to understand things she has never taught, and very tough grader with little feedback or opportunities to improve. AVOID!
IDK how people can rate her bad for this class. She literally gave us the EXACT QUESTIONS that would appear on the mid term and final exam making it easy to study and get a good grade. There also isn't any assignment or essays which is good there was only exams. Attendance is mandatory only for half the classes the rest you can watch online
Easy to do good in the class given she provides the exact questions that will be on the exam. I liked that there were no assignments in this class and that a textbook was not required
