Perhaps not the easiest but definitely the most constructive and competent prof.

Workshops were very helpful for projects
One of the best English professors at UVic.
A demanding but EXCELLENT teacher - my work improved dramatically

She is kinda sexy...
unreasonable marker, expects perfection from beginners, a dark disturbed writer
does not give any positive feedback
I love Lorna! ^____^ Hard marker, but she'll offer help when you need it.
she's my fave prof right now, she doesn't bs at all
Awkward when strictly lecturing but very kind, funny and realistic.
clear and good at her job, but does not inspire confidence or motivation
Great teacher, my english improved drastically.
bitter vixen style teaching, hard marker, stay clear if you can
Very odd and scary, completely self absorbed and picks her favourites
hold your ground, she destroys confidence, believe in yourself, she won't
quite possibly psychotic. as are most writers.
you will find out if you really want to write. be open minded and let her teach.
Very articulate and friendly. Demands a lot but your writing will improve.

A writer. She knows what's good and demands your best.
can be harsh, unhelpful, and cold
She won't let us use talking dogs in our stories...what the hell!
A doppleganger of Poli Sci prof Pash.

very defensive when approached after class
said she teaches for the money 'nuff said
I feel sorry for her, seems unhapy with her life, conveys this in class, sad....
was angry to be teaching, conveyed it in her lectures
very helpful, she thought i had a disability so she helped me lots
Lorna is the Best. Entertaining+Brilliant
Absolutely scatterbrained prof. Terribly hard marker. Disorganized and careless.
luvs talking about her self and her sheep
I agree - knows what's good and demands your best
Good teacher, high expectations
****. makes you feel like you suck without helping you to get better.
Believe in your abilities and forget about her and her farm
If Margaret Atwood submitted a story to this woman, she'd say it was ****!
Get ready for the Lorna Jackson show!!! k'shboom-bah
I hope I never am in her class again. She makes you feel like crap
Her style is odd and her marking scheme is odder
watch your GPA drop if you take her; does she know this is first year?
funny, friendly, knows her stuff.
Not interested in helping her students, and un-willing to justify her grading. She is up for a faculty job, she is not worthy.
More of an entertainer than a teacher. The structure of the course is well thought out. She has a narrow focus on writing styles. I agree with the comment, Welcome to the Lorna Jackson show .
Great prof, friendly to everyone though too many stories regarding Metchosin. Good marker and good knowledge of lit. Too much lit for a writing class though....
If you didn't do well in her class, you didn't deserve to do well. It's UNIVERSITY, guys!! There's no such thing as a teacher's pet. GO HOME! Every prof on campus respects her AND you if you take her class. To anyone considering her class: TAKE IT.
Lorna is absolutely my favourite prof! If you take her course, she'll do her best to answerr any questions, takes much care with her comments, and has really good taste in literature! a hardass, but that's what the writing world is filled with. live w/it!
had a terrible time taking notes.
she is a fair marker and really knows her stuff. if you work hard, you will get good grades. it has nothing to do with sucking up.
Her attitude along with her FAN CLUB is that she should be in the business of ripping apart potential writers which she does very effectively. I have talked to a number of writing students who have stopped writing because of her: some legacy!
Lorna's great. She's tough, and that's how it should be. The purpose of WRIT 100 is to screen out those who can't take it, so suck it up if you want to improve.
Don't believe those who say her job is to weed out people. That is a pack of lies. It is not her job to exclude anyone. The selection process is not based upon the edict of one professor although Jackson, by failing students, tries to make it so.
Fair marker. Helpful and fun.
To me she was the right kind of tough: the kind that encouraged me to write better and get rid of the crap. Fair and encouraging.

If the 'right' kind of tough is personally attacking ones ideas and writing, then that's just bizarre. this lady made me despise university english more than anything. She was VERY rude to me. avoid at all costs. unless you enjoy suckin' up

The writing dept., if it wants to keep students around, should can her ass. She makes people want to give up. Way too critical. She cuts other people down to make herself feel good.
Great instructor. Yes, she sometimes cuts a sharp edge. If you can't hack it, find another worthy instructor. There are many. She's one of them.
Lorna allows her personal emotional issues to influence her treatment of students and her grading. She has a chip on her shoulder and a vindictive streak, which she has difficulty controlling. If you must take fiction, just get through this course. Do not get on her bad side.

A failure as a teacher. She has a big mouth and she's self-absorbed. She's obnoxious and unhelpful. She tends to grade based on personal feelings towards the student. Most unprofessional. I would never recommend her!
Lacks finesse. Sarcastic and obnoxious.
Lorna is excellent at making you feel like a complete failure. She picks everything you write to pieces and only gives credit to work done her way. She single-handedly stopped me from taking any more fiction courses.
hyper critical, doesnt like anything if its not according to her personal (bland)style. i graduated with honours in this dept and she's the only prof who ever gave me a low grade. also, she gossips about her students to other students - so not cool.
Lorna is one of the best profs I've ever had. I appreciated her honesty and acerbic wit and she went out of her way to help me. If you are willing to put your ego aside, she will make you a better writer. And if she inspires you to drop out of the fiction department, you probably shouldn't have been there in the first place.
Lorna is all about Lorna. Do exactly what she expects and you will be fine. If you are creative, you'll have a tough time in this course. If she offered positive suggestions along with her criticisms she would be easier to stomach, but she is very predictable: negativity.
Huge (undeserved) ego, self-absorbed, only helpful to those whose style conforms to her own taste exactly. Neither kind nor trustworthy.
She demands dedication, a willingness to learn something in craft. I had a story roughly criticized by her and other students; I didn't get bitter, I improved. This can be difficult. I can see why opinions are divided. However, if you wish to challenge yourself, take her class. If you're ego is fragile, go elsewhere.
She needs to learn how to be a good teacher. She is cold and mean. Out of all the profs at UVIC she was the one who had absolutely no reason to be in a teaching profession.
Lorna doesn't do too well dividing personal from professional. She has students she likes and it shows. Her criticism isn't just negative, it's often vague and not represented. My first story was so poorly treated, I didn't want to bring in anything I liked after it. I felt like my mark and treatment varied with her personal opinion of me.
Lorna's demeanour is cold. Her comments on written work are more negative than constructive. Her lectures fail to discern between current trends in fiction and the classical tenets of good writing. I feel badly for those struggling in the class because unless one already has some talent or experience, this method of teaching doesn't work.
Evil. Marking scheme is unpredictable. Offers criticism rather than help. Cold, unforgiving, no compassion. Nitpicks over tiny details. Will abuse her power as a prof to make the class intimidating. I got a good mark, to my suprise, but I still hate her. Friends who are amazing writers got low marks. She only likes her own boring style of writing
Lorna is not nice. She picks favourites, and she avoids being in class. She didn't teach much of anything; she only criticized us. As she avoids students, students would be well advised to avoid her!
Intimidating, cold, and unapproachable. Caters to students who already have some talent, marginalizes those who honestly have come to begin learning the craft. Great if you already have a hand up but expect to be left in the dust otherwise.
Lorna, as stated before, caters to those who seemingly have already taken a fiction course. I feel lost and out of my league in her course...and I thought it was supposed to be a first year course (aka 4 beginners!). She is a professional and demands the best, which can be encouraging...but also can be very damaging to one's creativity. Be brave.
She is a tough teacher, but she will help you hone your craft if you can be strong enough to withstand her marking. Be willing to take criticism and work hard and you will be okay. This is not an easy course to take with her, but you will grow from it.
Yes, people, she is tough, but she is also going to make you a better writer. Work hard and she'll help you a lot. Sometimes her comments might seem harsh, but only because she doesn't sugarcoat her criticism (and it's usualy on the mark). If you want to be a writer that can't handle being criticized, good luck with a failed carreer.
TOUGH and SCARY, but she'll make you a good writer if you truly want to be one. She could work on being a bit more approachable, and being less obvious who her favourites are. All in all, I'm still deadly afraid of her, but I respect her as a writer and a professor because I've seen myself improve after each semester with her.
Lorna's class was inspiring and motivating. If you are committed to learning to write well, and to putting in hard labor, she will help in any way she can.
for the love of God, make a good first impression on Lorna. she has her favourites, and I'm fairly she picks them after the first draft of your first story.
Lorna was my prof in the late 90s. I STILL look back at notes she gave me--and i am a published writer now, with two books out. I have been to UBC, Banff, and I have had editors from big presses copyedit my work. If you don't think Lorna is the**** and will make you a better writer--you don't know what you need. Trust her. Listen. Work for it.
She cares about writing, quality, teaching, and her students. She helped me develop a tougher skin in sharing my words and my writing improved hugely. I worked my butt off in her classes (I also took second year writing with her) - one of my most challenging and rewarding classes. She is honest and raw, like good writing should be.
Legendarily difficult professor will whip you into a real writer. Your friends in other classes might get A's but your work stands a chance of actually getting published once she's done with you.
Brilliant and fascinating and one of my favorite people ever. She is very very difficult but you WILL come out of the class a better writer!
She made me cry on two occasions. She's also the best Writing professor I have ever had. Take her class only if you care more about improving your writing than getting an easy A. You have to trust her though, and if you really want help you need to seek it out. Just having a 20 minute conversation in her office is enough to make you 10x better.
If you're looking for an easy A, don't take a class with her. If you want to be the best writer you can be, take as many classes as possible with her. Lorna's honest and doesn't pull any punches. She does it with the best intentions, and she knows what she's doing. It's insane how much better my writing is just after one class with her.
Lorna is incredibly tough but hard working. If she knows you want it she will go above and beyond to bring your stories to their full potential. Yes - she's terrifying, but very attuned to her students and cares. Praise I received from her meant so much and she inspired me to work 10x harder. Highly recommend for serious fiction writers.
You're right to be scared out of your wits. And you have a right to pitch a fit. But you're most right if you listen to every single word this woman says. About your writing. If you really want to write. She's sensational.
Tough but incredibly insightful. She turned everything I knew about fiction upside down and I am a better writer because of it.
One of the worst teachers I have ever had. She was unnecessarily difficult when grading and was dismissive of anyone who didn't meet her arbitrary criteria. Played to the students she deigned worthy and didn't make attempts to teach the rest. Seemed to think she was the only one who knew what was "good fiction".
If you seriously want -- and I mean WANT -- a career in writing, Lorna is an invaluable teacher. She challenged everything I knew about the craft and I'm leagues better than I used to be after one class with her than I was after 2 years through the writing program at Camosun. Want to be a standout writer? You need her. She's tough but incredible.
Lorna will never mince words when critiquing your writing. She tells it exactly like it is, so you can trust her criticisms to be accurate and her praise to be sincere. Her class is one of the most difficult I've ever done, but my writing has indisputably improved. Incredibly stressful course, so if you'd like to avoid that, don't take.
